Celebrating mums

Tania Babic with Olivia and Ben. (Louisa Jones)

Tania Babic deserves recognition this Mother’s Day for juggling two jobs, working as a veterinary nurse and for WorkSafe, while caring for her daughter, who has Asperger’s, amid COVID-19. But the Belmont mum hoped only for a reprieve from doing the dishes and a nice walk with her two children this Sunday. “Usually it’s really nice getting whatever the kids have done for us at home,” she said. “Maybe I’ll get them to make me a coffee. My son Ben makes a good omelette so maybe I’ll get him to make me [one].” Tania has been managing speech therapy and psychologist teleconference appointments for her daughter, who turns 14 this month. “We’ve dropped a few subjects because it’s been a bit much for Liv to keep up with, but her school, Clonard College, has been amazing,” she said. The COVID-19 pandemic had also heightened her daughter’s anxiety and made it more dificult to get her outside, she said.

Avalon goes hands-free By Luke Voogt Avalon will become the irst airport in Australia to use touchless check-in technology to help planes return to the skies amid the COVID-19 pandemic. he airport would install the technology by the end of May, its chief executive oicer Justin Giddings told the Independent yesterday. “It’s amazing technology and the irst of its kind in Australia – we’re rapt to have this,” he said. “Six of 16 kiosks will have a touchless facility.” he technology uses cameras to track a passenger’s head movements, allowing them

to move a cursor by looking at options on a screen. Passengers at Avalon Airport will be able interact with the kiosks and bag drops via head movement, or voice recognition in multiple diferent languages. hey will also be able to scan passports by holding them in front of a camera, rather than inserting them into a slot. “his solution will allow passengers to go through the self-service experience without touching a device, thereby providing a seamless, intuitive and safe method of moving quickly through the airport,” Mr Giddings. Avalon Airport and Melbourne-based

company Elenium announced the deal to install the technology yesterday. “he partnership between Elenium and Avalon demonstrates how quickly a response to COVID-19 can be implemented,” Mr Giddings said. “It’s all about giving passengers conidence to ly again.” he technology would reduce the risk of the virus spreading by passengers touching check-in kiosks when domestic lights resumed, he said. At best, Avalon Airport could resume limited domestic services in June, depending on the latest government directions, Mr Giddings said.

he technology could also help the airport’s chances of capitalising on a proposed plan for a Trans-Tasman air travel ‘bubble’. Australian and New Zealand prime ministers Scott Morrison and Jacinda Ardern recently discussed a proposal for residents to travel between the two countries without mandatory isolation upon arrival. Flying New Zealand passengers into Avalon would help keep them separated from passengers arriving in Tullamarine on limited lights from Asia, who have to self-isolate, Mr Giddings said. “We’re just putting our hand up to say to airlines, ‘this is a good, safe way to do it’.”

Drug-driving doubles in Geelong By Luke Voogt Geelong drug-driving ofences have doubled amid COVID-19 restrictions, according to a senior Highway Patrol oicer. Police caught 60 motorists driving under the inluence of drugs in April, compared to an average of 30-35 a month, Senior Sergeant Peter Quick told the Independent. “We had 30 in the Bellarine alone,” he said. Less traic and fewer legitimate reasons for driving late at night ater stage 3 restrictions came in on March 31 had led to increased

detections, Senior Sergeant Quick explained. “Late at night, if a car’s moving it comes to our attention a lot quicker – it’s easier for us to intercept them and there’s less reason for them to be out,” he said. “It’s easier for us to identify cars and harder for us to lose them in a stream of traic. “If you’re intercepted, the line of questioning is: ‘what are you out for?” Senior Sergeant Quick said police were targeting areas they had not patrolled as much previously ater splitting Geelong Highway Patrol into three separate locations. Along with

the unit’s Waurn Ponds headquarters, they were also operating out of Geelong’s north and on the Bellarine Peninsula, he said. he force restructure had led to the increase in ofences detected on the Bellarine, Senior Sergeant Quick said. Police also recorded an increase in “extreme” speeding, with more motorists driving 40km/h or more above the speed limit, he said. Local oicers had impounded several cars speeding on Geelong Ring Road, Princes Highway, Colac Road and Anglesea Road. “hey’re well over impound speed, not just

a little over. It’s because there’s no traic as a bufer,” Senior Sergeant Quick said. But he said serious injury and fatal collisions have decreased dramatically during stage 3 restrictions. he numbers were particularly low for “vulnerable road-users” including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Geelong had 13 serious-injury crashes and three fatal crashes in March, compared to nine and zero respectively in April. Surf Coast had no serious-injury crashes last month, compared to four in March.

Andy Pobjoy in action at Piano Bar. (Rebecca Hosking) 208222_13

Tuned in for a personal best Piano Bar’s Andy Pobjoy is set to eclipse a half century of consecutive live-streamed performances ater smashing his personal record of 37 shows in a row. Pobjoy hit the previous PB on the keys aboard the Carnival Spirit in 2014, he told the Independent. “I just kept on playing and playing … every time I tried to take a night of the passengers cracked it,” he remembered. Pobjoy oten developed a loyal following on cruise ships among younger passengers with little else to do at night, he said.

“It’s a bit similar to what we’ve got now – people are on this trip and they can’t get of – so they tune in every night.” he Piano Bar owner is among a plethora of performers live streaming into lounge rooms from the venue nightly since the COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to live gigs. “We’re having an absolute blast,” Pobjoy said. “It’s helping us not to go stir-crazy and it’s a way of taking a bit of control back in this situation. “As performers we need something to look forward to.”

A show last Saturday reached up to 100,000 people on social media, Pobjoy said. Some fans have even donated, with all funds going towards the venue’s regular drag queens and other colourful performers not covered under the JobKeeper allowance, he said. When not on the piano, Pobjoy has been renovating a Norlane ‘ixer-upper’ with partner and fellow performer Josh King. “I’m meant to be in Tahiti on a cruise at the moment,” he said. “I don’t normally have this much time on my hands.” Luke Voogt

Geelong and the Surf Coast now have no “active” conirmed coronavirus cases, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. Conirmed Greater Geelong coronavirus cases have remained on 63 since midnight on April 21, while Surf Coast cases have remained on 10 since April 10, according to the department. he result comes as the state total increased by 14 to 1454, including 62 cases linked to an outbreak at Cedar Meats processing facility in Brooklyn. he spike showed that “our battle against COVID-19 is far from over” despite Victorians “lattening the curve”, chief health oicer Professor Brett Sutton said. Eighteen Victorians, aged from their 50s to 90s, have died ater contracting coronavirus. Currently, eight people are in hospital, including six patients in intensive care, and 132 people have recovered. In Victoria, 153 conirmed cases may have been acquired through community transmission with almost 176,500 Victorians tested so far, according to the department. Of the 1454 cases, 1196 occurred in metropolitan Melbourne and 219 in regional Victoria. Several cases remain under investigation. Professor Sutton encouraged Victorians to join in “a major testing blitz across the state” continuing next week. “he main aim of this increase in testing is to improve access and actively search for cases, allowing us to gain a better picture of this virus and make informed decisions for Victoria,” he said.

THANK YOU VICTORIA Thank you Victoria. For the way we’ve faced these past few weeks. With courage. With humility. And with hope. We may have been knocked down, but we’ve stood up. We’ve kept our distance, we’ve looked out for each other and we’ve kept our cool. With a newfound respect for handshakes, and an even deeper appreciation for hugs, we are spending time apart. But we’ve never been more united. And it’s the Victorians at the forefront of fighting this virus that we are most proud of. Our health care workers, our supermarket staff, our bus drivers, our cleaners and so many more. Every worker who – no matter what – puts themselves out there to help all of us through all of this. The best way we can help them, is by doing the opposite. By staying home. And staying positive. Respecting their efforts means respecting the restrictions. And, we can all see that slowly, it’s working. Yes, there is still a way to go. But we can’t stop now. Because staying apart keeps protecting our health system. Staying apart keeps saving lives. Staying apart keeps us together.

Rents decrease amid pandemic By Luke Voogt Geelong rents have fallen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV). Median house rental prices shrunk by $10 to $400 per week in Geelong from February to March. REIV president Gil King said the igures, released this week, relected the resilience of the market in the lead up to the State of Emergency. “he temporary measures in place due to COVID-19 make it challenging to gauge the

real situation but the underlying strength of the Victorian property market is undeniable.” Both Melbourne and regional Victoria had recorded similar drops from February to March. As prices fell in regional Victoria, vacancy rates increased from 1.8 to 1.9 per cent, according to REIV. “Victoria’s rental accommodation supply is growing, more rental homes are now available, but there remains a huge need for more properties to be listed to cater for growing demand,” Mr King said.

“Victoria needs vacancy rates of three to four per cent to maintain a healthy market. “Lower vacancy rates mean that families are inding it tougher and tougher to put a roof over their heads. “I urge owners of investment homes to lease out their properties; they will get a great rental return and homes are being leased out rapidly, with no hassle.” Geelong house prices increased in the quarter to March 2020, up 1.8 per cent on the previous quarter and 2.7 per cent on last year. Median house prices during the quarter rose

to $580,000, up from $570,000 the previous quarter. Curlewis recorded the highest annual increase of 16.3 per cent, while St Leonards recorded a fall of 12.5 per cent. Of the localities that sold 50 or more houses for the 12 months to March 2020, Corio recorded the largest decrease (9.9 per cent) and Cliton Springs had the highest increase (6.2 per cent). Last week Mr King lauded Victoria’s “record-breaking growth” in the quarter to March prior to the coronavirus outbreak.

Gym workouts go digital

1238631-RC32-16

Torquay’s Danny Russell and other local gym instructors are helping Geelong residents get of the couch and moving amid COVID-19 restrictions. Danny and his colleagues have been running live-streamed workouts for four weeks ater council’s leisure centres closed. “he irst time I ran it, it felt so weird,” the 42-year-old gym instructor said. “I can’t see people on the other end of the camera, that’s probably the weirdest part. It’s just you and an iPad.” he sessions were unique for Danny, who has worked in itness for more than 20 years. “I’ve been doing itness stuf now for longer than I’m willing to admit,” he said. he lack of feedback, aside from comments on social media, made it diicult to gauge how engaging the classes were, Danny explained. Finding the right lighting and acoustics for the online classes was also challenging, he said.

But going digital had allowed instructors to coach between “a couple hundred to 1500” people per session, compared to up to 50 in face-to-face classes. “I’ve actually got a friend in the UK who watches them. She works in London as a nurse.” And engagement with Leisurelink Aquatic and Recreation Centre’s social media page had gone up “tenfold”, he said. “Our marketing people are over the moon!” Together, Geelong’s four council-run itness centres are running two sessions each day, compared to a dozen each before COVID-19, according to Danny. “But we’re looking to expand our timetable and the variety of classes as we get some staf back,” he said. Ater sheltering under a table as German bombers lew overhead during World War II, Grovedale’s Marion Salmon was unfazed with spending her 100th birthday in lockdown. She was 21 when a plane dropped a bomb in her street in home town Kidderminster, en route to nearby industrial city Birmingham, she said. “[It] set ire to a hedge rose and knocked the corner of a house,” remembered Mrs Salmon, who celebrated a century of life on Wednesday. She helped the English ight back by driving trucks in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) as the men lew sorties over Germany. “he only interesting thing in my life was my four years in the WAAF!” she laughed. “Oh! hat and getting married!”

She met her husband at the base where she was stationed ater he returned from service in Africa. he couple moved to Australia in 1960, with their three sons. She now has six grandchildren and ive greatgrandchildren, and lives independently at Ingenia Gardens Grovedale. Initially Mrs Salmon was unsure if she should “bother” celebrating her 100th birthday amid COVID-19 restrictions. But lowers and a letter from Queen Elizabeth II had changed the spritely centenarian’s mind. “When you reach my age people always ask you what your secret is. For me, it’s my mother’s genes and not letting things get me down!”

Police have charged Geelong man Benjamin Schembri, 33, with 46 offences, including aggravated burglary, burglary, theft, assault, assaulting an emergency services worker and other offences. Police arrested him in a unit at St Leonards Parade, St Leonards, about 4.50pm on Tuesday. He was remanded in custody on Wednesday for his next court appearance on May 27.

Songstress serves those in need By Luke Voogt While Hamlyn Heights single mum and songstress Chelsea Gibb yearns to get back onstage, she is inding purpose helping those struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic. Chelsea has performed across Australia and more than 30 countries, with credits such as Chicago, Anything Goes and he King and I to her name. She is also among the volunteers serving meals at OneCare, which is experiencing a surge in demand as the pandemic forces other charities to close their doors. “I think we served 300 meals last hursday, Chelsea said. “It’s growing every week – obviously it’s changed a lot since corona hit. “I tell my kids, ‘when you’re feeling down or lat, the best way to feel better is to give to someone else’. Chelsea and hundreds of thousands of performers worldwide lost their livelihoods when the pandemic hit. “hey were the irst people to lose their income and their industry, she said. “It’s just starting to hit home how much I’ve been missing performing. In Australia many performers were ineligible for the new JobKeeper allowance, or all of the recently-bolstered JobSeeker allowance, and had gone “back to the hustle inding creative ways to make money with venues shut, she said. But Chelsea felt like she was “doing OK, she said. “Being in OneCare and seeing the people struggling is a great reality check. We really don’t need a lot. [he pandemic is] teaching everybody to pull it in. he charity had introduced social distancing to its twice weekly meals but was still

maintaining “the warmth and love as people came in, Chelsea said. “A lot of people don’t have anyone and for many it’s their only day they venture out and have a meal and some company. “It’s about chatting and inding out how everyone is going this week, that’s the most important thing. Chelsea began volunteering for OneCare a few years ago following her divorce, and recently started working a couple of days each week for the group too. “It gave me a lot more than what I was giving them to be honest, she said. “It’s been a great source of joy in my life – just being an ear for someone – you end up getting more out of it than the person you’re listening to. OneCare’s “amazing volunteers also recently started delivering meals to those in need and making ‘pantry packs’ for people to take home, she said. Before the pandemic hit, Chelsea had been touring with fellow musicians Amanda Harrison and Melissa Langton in Cyrens – he Swinging Songbook of Cy Coleman. “Hopefully we’ll be able to bring that back to Geelong when everything opens back up, she said. Her eldest, 15-year-old daughter Arielle, had been busking regularly before the coronavirus. Despite the pandemic shutting down venues and events worldwide, Chelsea was appreciating quality family time. “I miss hugging so much, she said.

PROPOSED

COUNCIL BUDGET 2020–21 MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR, CR STEPHANIE ASHER This is a recovery focused budget. With a commitment of half a billion dollars, the City of Greater Geelong 2020-21 Budget is about supporting our community through the coronavirus crisis and helping to kick-start the emergence of our region from the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. We have already announced packages totalling almost $5.5 million, which focused on immediate support measures. Our aim was to provide

solutions for local businesses, community groups and individuals who were struggling as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions. A further support package to be finalised in June will look to assist into the longer term. The proposed 2020-21 Budget includes $161 million of capital projects (our largest ever), which will be critical in creating local jobs and flow-on economic activity to help the Geelong region rebound. We’ve listened to our community and responded with an exciting range of projects that will directly benefit residents and ratepayers, including sport and recreation facilities,

playgrounds and parks, environmental initiatives, and protection of our rural and coastal landscapes. Our focus with this budget is on fairness and sustainability. We’ve improved the fairness of our rating system by removing the municipal charge – a flat fee previously applied to all ratepayers. Removing the charge will directly benefit those with lower property values. We are investing in the future of our region through social infrastructure, environmental management initiatives and asset creation, all of which contribute to our sustainable development as a clever, creative region.

All in all, the council group and the City team have collaborated to deliver a responsible and appropriate budget that offers certainty about how we intend to lead the community through this very difficult time. We welcome your feedback – please visit www.yoursay.geelongaustralia. com.au and tell us what you think.

MY GEELONG For more than a decade, Shane has sold he Big Issue in central Geelong. he 47-year-old speaks to Luke Voogt as the COVID-19 pandemic forces vendors of the streets.

I have a wife named Tanya, she has cerebral palsy. We’ve been together for 26 years and we’re meant to be together. We like our footy and watching the Terminator movies. Normally we love going out, shopping and having cofee with friends and other vendors. How has COVID-19 afected you? I really miss selling he Big Issue and I know other vendors miss it too. You feel more muted as a person; you can still talk to friends and family on the phone, but it’s not quite the same as being out amongst people who bring out the best in you. It’s frustrating that you can’t meet up with mates and have a cofee, but it has to be done. How are you coping? It helps to get out and do your shopping, you can’t reach your people but you might say ‘hi’ at the shops if there’s anyone around. I also just got my bike ixed so I’ve been taking it out. Why did you become a Big Issue vendor? In 2006 I was looking for something to do ater three years working in a call centre. I had done disability work and other things I enjoyed but never anything I was super at. I ran into a Geelong vendor, Raymond, who mentioned

he Big Issue and ater six months I gave it go. I did really well the irst day, and ever since then I realised how good I am when I’m selling it. Ater 10 years at Market Square, I moved to Westpac, as with Tanya it was diicult to do mornings. I had a break from 2017 to 2019 due to health issues. During that break I was the worst I had been, feeling lonely and depressed. But the thing that led me back last year was that I could ofer something to people. A voice was saying, “you’re meant to do this”. Why do you sell it? It just brings out the absolute best version of myself. It feels like you’ve got the Batsuit on. My sole purpose for selling is about bringing something positive to every person I come across. here’s a wonderful gentleman who will buy one from Steve, another vendor, and then one from me and give one to his sister. A massive thanks to all the customers who talk to us and give us support – to have a whole bunch of people turn up every fortnight and care about you is amazing. What do you think of he Big Issue going digital? It gives people a chance to still buy and read it, it’s a wonderful thing to have in place while we wait for this to be over. Taylor-made for live stream gig By Luke Voogt his year “was meant to be the busiest” yet for Geelong born-and-bred singer and X Factor runner-up Taylor Henderson. “I was ready to take on 2020,” he told the Independent recently. “I was four shows into the 40-plus that we had planned for the year. “I always prefer to be busy, so I said to my manager just book as many shows [as possible].” hen, just as he was celebrating his 27th birthday on March 23, the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Because I don’t think we’re going to see each other for a while’.” With live audiences banned for the foreseeable future, Henderson will take to the stage with dad Cameron for a live-streaming crowd instead next Friday. he father and son, who placed runner-up and third respectively when they competed together in Australia’s Got Talent in 2010, will join forces in Geelong Arts Centre’s new online series. “We love an applause but that’s not why we do it,” the younger Henderson said. “We sing because we want to tell a story or

showcase what music does for us.” With an empty theatre, he and dad would just have to create the atmosphere themselves by applauding each other, or even joking around

with some Bronx cheers or boos, he said. “Dad and I are going to have a lot of banter and make sure we’re bouncing of each other,” he said.

“It’s all live, real, authentic and fun. I hope the audience enjoy it as much as me and my old man are going to.” Henderson, who rose to fame with hits such as Borrow My Heart and Already Gone, hoped to add some acoustic covers and his dad’s songs to the show. “I’m always saying, ‘you’ve gotta play your songs more’,” he said. “I’m going to get him to play more of his songs because they’ve inspired me.” Ater only just moving out of home in Ceres last December, he said he was OK with the prospect of social distancing onstage with dad. “I’ve lived with him for 26 years, I’m really glad we can be separated on stage,” he laughed. Henderson said he was using his downtime during the pandemic to become more acquainted with the piano rather than the guitar, his usual go-to instrument. “hat’s kind of opened up a new realm for me for how I express myself and tell stories through my songs,” he said. He had also used his spare time to write and record new material, he said. “You can either dwell on what’s happening or make the best of it. “I know what it’s like to go a month without work. hen a gig comes along, and another, and then you’re on tour and lat out. “[he pandemic has taken] a toll on the whole world but I’m prepared for things like this because that’s how my industry works.” He hoped to play a few songs that he had never performed for a live audience, in next Friday’s show. “I’m so excited about it because one thing I’ve been really missing is performing,” he said. Paws for thought for pets

Pet projects How to keep your pet happy and healthy during lockdown.

By Laura Michell As you get into the routine of living in lockdown, spare a thought for your four-legged friend who might just be struggling with the changes to its world. With many people now working from home, children distance learning at home, and families opting to self-isolate, pets have suddenly found themselves with their owners 24/7. For many, this is a signiicant change to their routine and vets are urging pet parents to stop and think about how the coronavirus crisis might be afecting their furry family members. Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) founder Marisa Debattista says it is not uncommon for cats and dogs to be feeling a little out of sorts at the moment. “Pets are going to be a little confused at the moment as their routine has changed,” she says. “A little bit of routine is very, very important. People need to ensure they are still walking their pets. “People should also be leaving and coming back at certain times so pets don’t have issues with separation anxiety [when lockdown is lited]. “Enrichment is also very important, especially for dogs. If you can’t walk your dog as much at the moment, make sure they are still getting stimulation in the backyard.” However, Debattista says the upside to owners spending more time at home with their pets is that they are making time to schedule vet check-ups and vaccinations. SCAR’s Craigieburn-based community animal hospital recently launched a kerbside vet service, allowing people to take their pet to the vet without having to leave their car. RSPCA Victoria chief veterinarian Emma Bronts says the health and wellbeing of pets is just as important as that of any other family member. She says minimising your pet’s contact with other animals is key. “Remember that pets need to practice social distancing like the rest of their family. Since our pets don’t know that, you need to help them keep their distance from other people and animals.” While Dr Bronts says there is “no evidence” pets can spread COVID-19, she is urging owners to ensure they maintain good hygiene. “As always, it is advisable to wash your hands with soap and water ater contact with pets. his protects you against various common 16 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 8 May, 2020

Keep them entertained An easy and effective way of keeping your pet entertained, active and mentally stimulated while indoors is to use enrichment toys such as automated laser pointers, cat wands, or food puzzles. You can also create an agility course for your cat, dog, rabbit or guinea pig from everyday items you have at home. Or why not create an indoor treasure hunt for treats?

Teach your pet a new trick PETstock dog trainer Tina Button says there has never been a better time to train your pet. Why not teach your dog to roll over, beg or play dead? And don’t forget about your feline friends. Cats can be trained to sit and shake paws, just like dogs.

Don’t forget about grooming! Keep your pet’s coat tidy by brushing it daily to remove tangles, dirt and dead hair, as well as increase skin circulation and distribute oil. PETstock vet Sasha Nefedova says your pet’s winter coat could be hiding lumps, bumps or sores, so be sure to look for signs of illness while you brush.

Show them some love Simply patting a cat or dog can lower your heart rate and theirs too, and helps build an unwavering friendship. bacteria such as E-Coli and Salmonella that can pass between pets and humans,” she says. “Pet owners should continue to practice good hand hygiene ater handling their pet’s food, food bowls and water bowls, and cat litter boxes. You should continue to wash pet food and water bowls regularly.” Another beneit of life in lockdown is that shelters are seeing a rise in people looking to adopt a pet. A spokeswoman for he Lost Dogs Home, which houses impounded pets from across the west, says cats, in particular, are being adopted at a faster rate than in previous months. “We are certainly receiving many more

inquiries and requests for meet and greets with our animals with a view to adoption. “Last weekend, we received over 3000 phone and email inquiries for our adoptions team.” he RSPCA, which runs the Epping Animals Welfare Facility on behalf of Whittlesea, Moreland and Darebin councils, is also reporting a rise in pet adoptions. Like many shelters, the RSPCA has changed its adoption processes to appointment-only to ensure it can adhere to social distancing requirements. Meanwhile, some shelters and rescue groups are bracing for a surge in surrendered pets. PETstock Assist charity and events

co-ordinator Jess Guilfoyle says inancial hardships and uncertainty may force many pet owners to part ways with their furry friends. “With more animals in desperate need of emergency care, now is a great time to consider … becoming a foster carer,” she says. “Foster care provides a loving home environment for rescue pets while they wait for their forever home. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience and the perfect way to pay it forward during the COVID-19 crisis. “However, it’s important to remember that foster care is a long-term commitment … this means taking into consideration the lifestyle you will live ater COVID-19.”

Munn jailed for hammer murder By Luke Voogt Convicted murderer Nicholas Munn has been sentenced to at least 21 years jail ater killing North Shore father-of-three Jason Peter Fry with a hammer in 2018. On Tuesday, Supreme Court Judge John Champion sentenced Nicholas Munn, 42, of Seaforth Street, North Shore, to 27 years in prison with a non-parole period of 21 years. During sentencing Justice Champion described Munn’s attempts to conceal the victim’s body ater the “vicious” and “brutal” murder as “deplorable”. “At no stage did you attempt to obtain medical

assistance for Mr Fry,” he said. “Instead you sought to conceal his death, and your actions, up until the point where his body was found.” he sentence comes ater a jury last September convicted Munn of murdering Mr Fry in his bedroom at Seaforth Street on April 9. While Munn admitted to killing Mr Fry, he pleaded not guilty, claiming the victim came at him with a knife. But Justice Champion rejected the claims as “an improbable construct” and accepted that Munn attacked the “unsuspecting” victim with a claw hammer from behind as he sat looking at a screen. “I conclude that you struck Mr Fry as many

as 13 times in a deliberate manner,” he said. “Mr Fry’s skull was massively damaged as a result of the blows, with pieces of his skull either missing or discovered at various locations.” Justice Champion cited injuries to the back and side of Mr Fry’s head and a witness’s testimony of Munn describing the attack to her. He also noted forensic testing linking a claw hammer to the murder. he attack was a “spontaneous burst of anger” ater Munn lent Mr Fry $2500, believing the victim “had spent or gambled the money away”, Justice Champion said. Following the murder, Munn hid the body in a blue station wagon, attempted to clean the

site, and sell or dispose of Mr Fry’s possessions, Justice Champion said. On April 15, police discovered the “badly decomposed” body in the station wagon and oicers arrested Munn two days later in Lara. Justice Champion read victim impact statements from Mr Fry’s family, including his mother, who lamented the “cowardly” murder that had taken her son’s life for “almost nothing”. But he acknowledged Munn showed “regret” for murdering Mr Fry, who he had known since they were teenagers. Munn could be eligible for release in 2039 given time already served in custody.

Lara singer takes fans on ‘world tour’ Lara singer-songwriter Dom Italiano is on a ‘world tour’ with his “small but loyal group” of fans amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With just a green screen in his recording studio, Italiano is taking followers from Antarctica to Malta in two live-streamed shows each day. “I get the suggestions of where to go from people on the live stream,” he told the Independent. “All I’m doing is making use of a green screen behind me, getting photos of the net and pretending I’m on a world tour, instead of going on one.

“Someone said, ‘go to the Galapagos Islands’. I said, ‘OK, cool!’” Italiano suggested he could even leave this world on his ‘iso’ tour. “I could deinitely go to Middle Earth or Terry Pratchett’s Discworld,” he said. “What’s great about this whole lockdown thing is if you’ve got a bit of imagination and stubbornness, you can take people on a journey. “I could just sit around, do nothing and watch Netlix, or I can use this technology to do something a little bit novel.” Today Italiano will also release his newest single, he Arsonist, a song about needing the

bad to appreciate the good. “he song seems to be an eerie forecast, because I wrote and recorded it a year ago, but it’s very much in line with what we’re going through,” he said. “Us westerners, we’ve been particularly lucky to live in this system that has been put together to make our lives easy. “he circumstances we’re in at the moment just highlight how ickle that well-oiled machine can be.” he Arsonist is of Italiano’s upcoming album, he Hurt Party, to be released on June 5.

A mystery lotto player who purchased their $613,000-winning ticket at Armstrong Creek has come forward to claim their prize, a month ater the draw. he elusive winner held one of seven division one-winning entries in TattsLotto’s April 4 draw. he reason for the winner’s delay coming forward and their plans for the windfall “will forever remain a mystery” as they have chosen to remain anonymous, according to Tattslotto. he ticket was unregistered, meaning lotto oicials had no way of contacting the winner and had to wait for them to come forward. he winner bought their entry at NewsXpress Armstrong Creek and owner Wayne Davis was “relieved” they claimed their prize. “It’s created a real buzz around the centre for the past month with everyone wondering if they held that winning ticket,” he exclaimed. “We had a few people asking if we’ve found the winner yet, so I’ll be really happy to tell everyone the prize has been claimed. “We are so happy for our winner. We hope they enjoy their prize now that they have discovered the win!” he Lott spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said the win had come at a great time. “While we don’t know how our winner will enjoy their win, I’m sure this player will be smiling from ear to ear knowing their bank balance is about to balloon by a few extra zeroes. “Other winners have told us they use their windfalls to retire or cut back their hours at work, buy a new home or do some renovations and plan that long-overdue holiday.” he odds of winning division one in the draw were one in 8,145,060. Former Waterworld admin worker Lauren Allchin is among 200 previously stood-down council employees who have recently been redeployed in other work. he part-time worker and uni student is now with council’s tree maintenance team, clearing vegetation from footpaths. “I’m really grateful to be able to keep working,” the 21-year-old from Highton said. “It gives me a sense of purpose and normality through this unusual time.” Ms Allchin applied for the job ater a council welfare oicer phoned to see how she was going, she said. “here were plenty of opportunities to take

on roles that didn’t require prior experience.” In March, City Hall controversially stood down 576 employees ater closing some services due to COVID-19 restrictions, drawing criticism from state and federal Labor MPs. But recently, City Hall said it had illed more than 200 of 250 positions made available through its temporary redeployment program. he program had created jobs in Meals on Wheels, staf welfare, accounting, administration, parks maintenance, street cleaning and online itness, City Hall said. So far, most of the redeployed employees have come from leisure and recreation services. “Not only has the redeployment program

allowed us to keep employees working, we have been able to boost services to better support our community during this time,” chief executive Martin Cutter said. he Australian Services Union was working with City Hall to ensure all permanent staf remained inancially-secure through redeployment and access to leave, its Victorian secretary Lisa Darmanin said. Ms Darmanin also welcomed a review of opportunities for casual workers who had been stood down and committing to “engaging them again at the earliest opportunity”. Fostering a sense of purpose Excellence is fostered at North Geelong Secondary College from the moment students enter the school gates. Principal Nicholas Adamou, who has led the school for the past decade, says an inclusive environment and the commitment of staf are key. “When you walk through the gates of the school, it doesn’t matter where you came from, you all look the same and behave the same way and we aim to fulil their potential,” Mr Adamou says. “We’re there for the students, we love what we do and we have absolutely outstanding teachers that are very dedicated. “he kids are very proud to be part of the school and we have instilled pride through our school’s values and the student voice.” He says that wide-ranging programs and tutoring three times a week by specialist staf give students the best chance of success. he school’s STAR program is a literacy and

numeracy program for students identiied as having huge potential. “It’s a tutoring program to help them excel, not to bring them to standard,” Mr Adamou says. Homework clubs ater school in the library aim to foster students’ academic ability while the Four Plus One program, which includes four periods of English each week as well as an extra reading session, boosts literacy skills. Career counselling begins in year 8 to help students focus on the future. “hey set their sights on what they want to achieve and what they need to do to get there, fostering a great sense of purpose and drive,” Mr Adamou says. LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT

Plantar fasciitis – is it really? Dr David Kavanagh, a musculoskeletal podiatrist at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, says heel and arch pain is very common; in fact, more than 80 per cent of Australians will sufer heel pain at some point. However, he says that a lot of misinformation about heel and arch pain can oten lead to a misdiagnosis of plantar fasciitis. Dr Kavanagh sets out here to sort fact from iction. “Most heel and foot arch pain occurs,” he says, “when the plantar fascia [connective tissues running along the bottom of the foot] becomes overloaded, resulting in degeneration of the tissues and/or irritation of the nerves. “Although there may be some accompanied inlammation, these are not inlammatory conditions in nature, so are not pure plantar fasciitis – and shouldn’t be treated as such. “Most heel and arch pain is a result of faulty foot function or lower limb biomechanics, associated with environmental factors, and this is what needs to be treated.” He also says it’s imperative that heel and arch pain be diagnosed correctly by someone who has speciic expertise and up-to-date training in foot and lower limb musculoskeletal medicine and degenerative conditions. “Even your local GP, radiologist and general podiatrist may not be the best people to diagnose your heel and arch pain, as they tend to be more generalised and non-speciic. “Tissue thickening shown on diagnostic scans is oten misinterpreted as inlammation, adding to the incidence of misdiagnosis, while

anti-inlammatory treatments and cortisone are too oten incorrectly prescribed. “hese may, in few cases, provide some temporary relief but will not ix heel and arch pain and can, in fact, prolong the injury
