Election switch By Cam Lucadou-Wells Good or bad for democracy? The shift to single-member wards and postal voting for Greater Dandenong Council’s election on 24 October has drawn a mixed response from sitting councillors. Greater Dandenong is one of seven Victorian councils which had up to now resisted the switch from attendance voting. It affirmed that position as recently as February. The State Government has also mandated Greater Dandenong’s shift from four multicouncillor wards to 11 single-member wards. The council has since proposed ‘backto-the-future’ names reflecting suburbs and streets for the new wards. The proposed names are Springvale North, Springvale Central, Springvale South, Keysborough, Keysborough South, Noble Park North, Yarraman, Noble Park, Dandenong North, Cleeland and Dandenong. Currently, the four wards are named after flora: Red Gum, Paperbark, Silverleaf and Lightwood. Mayor Jim Memeti said the new placebased names would be more identifiable for residents. Most incumbent councillors would naturally occupy new wards without going headto-head with each other, Cr Memeti said. They were councillors Sean O’Reilly
(Springvale North), Youhorn Chea (Springvale), Loi Truong (Springvale South), Matthew Kirwan (Keysborough South), Maria Sampey (Noble Park North), Zaynoun Melhem (Dandenong North), Angela Long (Cleeland) and himself in Dandenong, he said. However, the Noble Park-based Paperbark Ward councillors Peter Brown, Tim Dark and Sophie Tan faced a vexing choice given the ward has been split five ways. Crs Brown and Dark told the Journal they were undecided which ward they would nominate for. Cr Memeti said the single-member wards would enable voters to judge which councillors were doing a good job. “We’re able to be held accountable.” Opposed however are Cr Matthew Kirwan, of the Greens, and Cr Dark, of the Liberal Party, who sit among an ALP-dominated council. Cr Dark said single-member wards may impede independents and non-ALP candidates, and further entrench Labor’s dominance. Cr Kirwan said single-member wards were a “regressive step for democracy”. “They encourage parochial behaviour among councillors and don’t deliver the same diversity of views and councillors as multicouncillor wards. “Multi-member wards encouraged collegiality and a focus on improving the whole council.” Continued page 6

STAYING SAFE KEEPS US TOGETHER Thank You Victoria. While some restrictions have eased, limiting our movement everyday means everything. It means we slow the spread of the virus. If we keep working from home and we limit the number of us moving around, we can keep kicking a footy in the park. If we use common sense and keep our distance, we can visit cafes and restaurants. And if we only see those we need to, we’ll keep our friends and families safe. We all have a part to play. It’s up to all of us to make this work.

IN BRIEF
Cosmetic life ban By Cam Lucadou-Wells An unregistered provider of Botox, dermal fillers, eyelid cutting and other “high risk” cosmetic procedures at the back of a Springvale jewellery store has been permanently banned. Lee Kim Tan, who traded as Sonoun Kimlee Salon in Springvale Shopping Centre, was barred after an investigation by the Health Complaints Commissioner. She is prohibited from any cosmetic treatments involving cutting or piercing skin including injecting Botox and dermal fillers. “The safety of Victorians is our number one priority,” Health Complaints Commissioner, Karen Cusack, said. “As such, I believe it is necessary to impose this permanent ban on Lee Kim Tan to avoid a
serious risk to the health, safety and welfare of the Victorian public.” Ms Cusack said consumers should be wary of cosmetic treatment providers who don’t “do the right thing”. “That is why it is important for any person considering cosmetic treatments to consider what can go wrong and what they have a right to expect from their health service provider so that they can make fully informed decisions.” In July, the cockroach-infested salon was shut down by the Health Complaints Commissioner. It was also investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services. Due to the clinic’s “unsafe practices”, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton at the time urged people to visit their GP to test for blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis
B, hepatitis C or HIV. It performed “high-risk” cosmetic procedures such as tattooing, eyelid cutting, skin peels, mole removal and facial filler injections on at least 122 patients. “It was discovered when Dandenong Council investigated reports of people leaving the jewellery store with blood on their faces,” Professor Sutton said at the time. “They also found cockroaches around injectable bottles.” Professor Sutton said it was important to only receive cosmetic services in registered and hygienic facilities. “The risk of infection, injury and permanent damage is very high if premises do not employ suitably qualified staff and practice suitable infection control measures.”
Ex-pizza chef rises to great heights in new career A former pizza chef who flung himself into a new tiling career has won a national tradie award. Zakir Mozafari, of Hallam, took out the ‘New to the Trades’ category at the inaugural Invoice2go Tradie of the Year Awards. Mr Mozafari was regarded as a fantastic advert for the potential of career change, according to the judges. “His dedication to his new craft was inspiring and his passion to have a long and exciting career in the industry was plain to see,”according to a statement from the awards. Unfulfilled as a pizza maker, he started a business Rapid Tiling & Waterproofing Services that provided him variety and joy.
“It’s going to help my business in so many ways,” Mr Mozafari said of the award.
89yo injured in drive-thru smash An 89-year-old driver has been taken to hospital after crashing into two cars at a McDonald’s outlet in Springvale on Thursday 21 May. Police believe the man, who was travelling south in an Isuzu ute on Westall Road, initially crashed into a Toyota Corolla turning from Osborne Avenue about 1pm. The ute then crashed into a stationary Commodore in the drive-thru. The man was taken by ambulance to The Alfred hospital in a non-life threatening condition, police say. The other drivers were not injured.
Driver escapes carjack attempt Two hooded males have tried to car-jack a driver on Heatherton Road in Dandenong. The 25-year-old driver of a black Mazda 3 sedan was travelling west before stopping at the Cleeland Street traffic lights near Dandenong Oasis about 1.40am on Tuesday 19 May. Two males tried to allegedly open the driver-side door but all doors were locked. They banged on the driver-side window, and the victim escaped without further incident, police say. The males were described as African appearance, about 180 centimetres and wearing grey hooded jumpers. Any information or dash-cam footage to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au
Attacked by masked male
“It is fantastic encouragement and motivation to keep dedicating myself to my craft.
A woman has been assaulted by an unknown masked male with an Afro as she walked home from Springvale railway station, police say. The 27-year-old was grabbed and pushed to the ground as she walked east on Hillcrest Grove about 10.30pm on Wednesday 13 May. Police are seeking the attacker, who ran away after the assault. He was described as having an “Aussie accent” and black Afro hair that “bounced when he walked”. He was wearing a grey hooded jumper with a front pocket for both hands, black pants and a surgical mask on his face. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au
“My goal is to be the best tradie I can be, and this award proves that turning my back on pizzas to learn a trade was a great decision.” He and other winners received $1000, work garments, an Invoice2go subscription and Tradie of the Year Award branding. The national award was judged by TV personality Rob Palmer and Invoice2go chief financial officer Mark Bartels.

Venues re-open as Premier unveils a cautious easing By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong’s Covid-19 cases have remained at 16 over the past week as a swathe of venues such as playgrounds, skate parks, libraries and galleries are set to reopen. On 24 May, Premier Daniel Andrews announced the timeline for the “cautious” easing of social restrictions. The relaxation was due to low community transmissions of coronavirus (27) during a 174,00 testing blitz and opening up of restrictions in the past fortnight. This year, Victoria had tested more than 430,000 people for coronavirus - the highest testing rate in Australia. “The more you look, the more you find,” Mr Andrews said. “Because of the large numbers of people coming out being tested we’re confident we’ve got control of this.”
Mr Andrews urged Victorians to ‘stay safe’ - a more relaxed revision from the ‘stay home’ message in recent months. Social distancing measures would continue as the state’s “Covid-normal” for many months. “Whilst this is a significant easing of restrictions ... this is by no means over. “We will see more positive cases, we will see more outbreaks.” The prospect of a vaccine to eradicate the virus was more likely to be years away than months away, he said. The key was to continue testing at record levels for early detection and curtailing the spread. “If you wait until people are in ICUs then it’s too late.” As of 26 May, outdoor playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor communal gym equip-
ment will reopen as students start returning to school. From 1 June, the limits on home gatherings and outdoor groups rise to 20 people. Overnight stays will be again permitted at homes and in hotels, motels, campgrounds and caravan parks. Slightly larger gatherings can also attend weddings, funerals and religious ceremonies. Libraries, youth centres, men’s sheds, community arts and crafts and community facilities will be opened to up to 20 visitors in a space. Galleries, musuems, drive-in cinemas, historic sites, zoos and outdoor amusement parks can re-open under the same limits. The same guidelines apply to re-opened swimming pools and outdoor community sport centres - up to 20 in undivided spaces, without contact or competition.
Nail salons, spas, tattoo parlours, auctions and non-food and drink market stalls will also be back in business. From 22 June, indoor gyms and sport centres will open - if community transmissions of coronavirus remains low and testing numbers high. Guests at restaurants, cafes, galleries and museums would rise to 50, and cinemas and theatres would re-open under restriction. Mr Andrews urged people to continue working from home if possible until at least the end of June. The mass return of workers presented the “greatest risk” for a second wave of Covid-19. In Greater Dandenong, a 17th case was recorded on 20 May. The total was revised back down to 16 the next day. Casey’s infections remained steady on 58, and Cardinia on 16.

Cleaners move in A taskforce of 50 cleaners will be disinfecting public areas in Greater Dandenong over the next month. The workers who lost their jobs as a result of Covid-19 have been recruited to combat the virus’s spread. They are cleansing handrails, traffic signal buttons, public seating, bus shelters - and when it re-opens - playground equipment. Among about 25,000 in the South East who lost employment during pandemic restrictions in March-April, these recruits are trained and supervised by Citywide’s cleansing and sanitisation services. Their wages are paid by the Victorian Government’s Working For Victoria program. Mayor Jim Memeti said the mass disinfection would complement the council’s “ramped-up cleansing regime”. “With restrictions being slowly eased this increased cleaning effort will help reduce the spread of the virus through contact transmission.” The program helped job seekers and kept the community safe in challenging times, Cr Memeti said. “The pandemic has caused tremendous disruption to jobs across many industries, so we are very pleased to support a program which gets people back in the workforce, while helping us to keep our city clean and safe,” Cr Memeti said. “This extra cleaning is also helping set our community up for success as restrictions ease

Council election switch

From front page Cr Kirwan cited the case of the sacked Geelong City Council in which single-councillor wards led to distorted resource allocation and priorities. Postal voting was also regressive, he said. It could lead to a rise in dummy candidates - who run solely to draw preferences on behalf of genuine candidates - in Greater Dandenong elections, Cr Kirwan said. How-to-vote cards are banned in the upcoming poll, which may arguably reduce dummy candidates’ effectiveness. However, candidates at Casey Council’s 2016 election circumvented the ban by including how-to-vote preferences within their candidate statements. Cr Memeti said dummy candidates were not a threat, being less likely to run well-resourced letter-drop campaigns. “You can always spot the dummy candidates from a mile away.” Cr Memeti welcomed “all residents” to get involved, including as new candidates. “We do need new people - new ideas, younger people, more female participation.” In support of the changes, Cr Brown said postal voting allowed electors to vote at their convenience. Single-member wards had worked “exceptionally well” in the past, he said.

Greater Dandenong Council came up rainbows as it unveiled its strongest stance against homophobia. For the first time, the council bathed Dandenong Town Hall in rainbow lighting and raised the rainbow flag in Harmony Square to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia on Sunday 17 May. The council’s LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer) inclusion statement was launched, backed by a video message of support from mayor Jim Memeti and chief executive John Bennie. In the statement, the council declares itself as a “proud ally” of the LGBTIQ community. “As a diverse municipality, we are enriched by the social, cultural and economic contributions made by LGBTIQ people”. It pledged to challenge “discriminatory and antagonistic” behaviour against LGBTIQ communities. Greater Dandenong will engage with the communities to provide “genuine opportunities” in decisions, services and developing community leaders, the statement says. “Council recognises the real struggles of the LGBTIQ community who experience multiple forms of discrimination and harassment, based on homophobia/transphobia/biphobia/intersexphobia. “This often affects their ability to fully participate in everyday life within our community.” Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said it was a “long journey” since he called for improved LGBTIQ inclusion in Greater Dandenong in 2017. At that stage, a survey of LGBTIQ young people in Greater Dandenong community reported not being able to express their identity without fear of criticism or discrimination. They also told of stereotyping and a lack of understanding, including due to cultural factors; abuse and bullying; and a lack of local resources and services. “The reaction I have had on social media from Greater Dandenong residents of a variety of cultures and faiths shows that Greater Dandenong Council taking the step to publicly recognise our LGBTIQ community has been not just well accepted but embraced,” Cr Kirwan said.

Details on plant’s emissions impact By Cam Lucadou-Wells The proponent of a controversial waste-toenergy incinerator in Dandenong South has further elaborated on potential emissions and odours. The state’s pollution watchdog Environment Protection Authority Victoria publicly released the further information on Thursday 21 May. Three months earlier, the EPA had requested extra information as part of assessing a works approval application for the plant. It is expected to make its decision in late June. As requested, proponent Great Southern Waste Technologies provided more information including emissions rates, odour impacts and accidental or emergency emission releases. The incinerator would annually process 100,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste and commercial and industrial waste. It would generate about 7.9 MegaWatts of power into the grid - suffice for about 7000 homes and businesses. GSWT has submitted that the plant’s “clean” gasification technology met European Union standards. It would have negligible impact on human health, it claims. However, the project has attracted a wave of community objections - many concerned that the plant would be 1.4 kilometres from the closest residents and Mt Hira College. Within five kilometres are two primary schools, two colleges, three kindergartens and

Blitz to build new schools
An illustration of the proposed waste-to-energy plant at 70 Ordish Road, Dandenong South. a maternal and child health centre. Objectors have also expressed fears of air pollution and odours cumulating on top of an existing stench from the industrial-2 zone.
Public submissions on the new information have re-opened until 5pm on 4 June. Details: engage.vic.gov.au/epa-works-approvals/GSWT
The Endeavour Hills Specialist School project has been brought forward as part of a sixmonth building blitz by the State Government. The project will share in $439 million to expedite construction of 10 new schools as part of a Covid-19 economic stimulus package. The school will rise at the former Endeavour Hills Secondary College site, which closed in Amalfi Drive in 2012. It is expected to open for 288 students with additional needs for the 2022 school year - as promised ahead of the 2018 election. The project’s most recent allocation was a share of $17.2 million for planning new schools in the 2018-’19 State Budget. On 18 May, the Government announced $2.7 billion in building works for “shovelready” projects including $1.18 billion on school infrastructure. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the investment would “build new schools, create thousands of jobs and help our economy recover from coronavirus”. “We’re investing record funding in education so all people in Dandenong, regardless of their background or circumstances, get a world-class education.” 12449553-SG22-20

20 years ago 22 May 2000 Clinic Fate Vote The fate of a proposed safe injecting clinic for Springvale will be decided at tonight’s Greater Dandenong council meeting. John Kelly will bring the matter to a head by proposing that council reject the facility and investigate other ways of tackling the heroin scourge. A vote against the clinic would send a clear message to State Government who claimed it would only establish the centre if it won winder community
support. Cr Kelly said he wanted to put the issue to rest. “We’ve had our public forum and workshops on the issue so there is no point in making people wait any longer” he said. Greater Dandenong mayor Councillor Angela Long said although she was a member of the ALP, she would vote against the clinic without any fear of pressure from the government. “I have been told by the party that I can make up my own mind,” Cr Long said. “I am taking the public’s view into account in making my decision against the clinic. Chairman of the Springvale Drug Action Committee, Mr Eddie Micallef said he was disappointed at how quickly council had moved. “They have acted with undue haste and as a result they aren’t giving their residents a fair go.”

Strength of support More than 50 mechanics took one look at Ghulam Haidari’s polio withered leg and turned him away, refusing to give the Hampton Park 21 year old the chance to prove himself in the field he loves. But Patterson Cheney’s New World Honda in Narre Warren saw past the refugee’s disability and took him on as a trade assistant. Three months down the track and the company is looking to offer him an apprenticeship. Ghulam makes his way around the workshop on a crutch with remarkable ease, his strength, and agility astounding to watch. He removes a tyre using one arm while his other rests on the wooden crutch that serves as his right leg. “I’m feeling very happy. This job is my passion” he said. “Because I got the job I can support my family as well.”

Art show canned for 2020 By Cam Lucadou-Wells In an ever-shrinking events calendar, Noble Park Community Centre Art Show has become the latest casualty. On 20 May, the art show’s committee announced in a statement that the annual October show - now in its 15th year - won’t go ahead. “Due to Covid-19 and the uncertainty that surrounds all future events and gatherings we have decided that it would be best to cancel this year’s exhibition,” the committee stated. “Throughout the year a lot of work goes into planning and curating this mammoth event and we would hate to see all that effort and passion go to waste.” Workshops and art activities would instead be staged to “keep the spirit of the art show alive”.

Organisers will also look at adding categories and extending the show to a week. “We will be back next October bigger and better than ever, so please keep creating.” The cancellation comes on top of the temporary closure of Greater Dandenong Council’s arts venues such as Drum Theatre, Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, and Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens. No support in pandemic By Cam Lucadou-Wells In a “game of attrition”, Dandenong asylum seeker Siva has been suffering a brutal doublewhammy. For eight months, he has been denied an income. He has no work rights and any Government support - while awaiting a final appeal against the Department of Home Affairs ruling he’s ineligible to stay. It’s no accident, says South East Community Links general manager Chris Pierson. The “sick and sorry” system is designed to force people to leave these shores before their appeal is heard up to 18 months later. “At the moment you can’t even get a place to go home if you want to. “The situation has trapped people and it’s crushing.” During the Covid-19 pandemic, a much larger group of bridging-visa and temporary protection visa holders have lost their jobs and all income. They are excluded from the Federal Government’s $130 billion JobKeeper and JobSeeker rescue packages. SECL and other agencies are helping a “catastrophic” number with food and grants. But they don’t have the resources to pay the rent for hundreds of destitute households. “You wouldn’t want to be looking for a job in the current labour market right now,” Mr Pierson said. When allowed to ply his trade, Siva is a sought-after musician for Hindu Tamil weddings and cultural events. He is one of perhaps five exponents of the double-ended thavil drum. But now Siva survives on community donations. They provide intermittent $400 donations for food and necessities. “It’s very, very bad,” a shattered Siva says of

Temporary protection visa holders total more than 17,000. Greater Dandenong Council estimates that about 2000 asylum seekers live in the municipality. Since 2018, the council campaigned against the Federal Government’s plans to remove Status Resolution Support Services payments from asylum seekers if they were deemed work ready. The Department of Home Affairs was approached for comment.

Moving outside you will feel you are in your own private paradise but only minutes from town. Enjoy your own fruit from the orchard or simply enjoy watching the wildlife from the paved outdoor area.
We are undergoing a very uncertain period facing fear of sickness, death and despair. In our daily practice of meditation we focus our attention on all and extend our thoughts so that they develop courage and understanding in to the nature of existence and overcome fear and suffering. The Buddha taught us to understand the truth of suffering. We understand the truth of suffering or unsatisfactoriness, when we awaken to the realisation that sorrow and suffering are the principal characteristic of life. All living beings (human or animal) without exception are subject to the ever-present danger of pain and suffering. There are no conditions which guarantee happiness, peace or security. At any hour or even any moment we are likely to become victims. There are many things in our lives that come under the category of suffering. Birth, death, old-age, hunger, thirst, heat and cold, deformation of the body, disease, sickness and accidents, all these are suffering. To be separated from those we love, association with difficult and unpleasant people are also suffering. Mentally we experience worry, anxiety, anguish, grief, woe and despair, not to obtain object of our desires; dwelling in unfit or uncongenial surroundings or having unpleasant employment, irritating noises discordant sounds, mental or physical ill-health in ourselves or in those we love. Suffering must be viewed in its correct perspective. We have experienced it in the past. We are experiencing it in the present.
Venerable Naotunne Vijitha Thero of Dhamma Sarana Buddhist Temple, Keysborough. To avoid it in the future we have to take active and wise steps. If we learn carefully about our desires and emotions, we find in them the factors causing suffering. They include greed; attachment to people, ideas or objects; the failure to obtain or satisfy our desires; restlessness; self-exaltation; pride; vanity, andcraving. In the past and in the present all these and many others are the cause of suffering. We are subject, by the fact that we exist, to suffering from natural causes as well as the deeds of our actions. However, we don’t have to be pessimistic and passively accept everything that happens to us. We cannot change the past but we can change the present and future by way of our actions. Neither suffering nor happiness is permanent. It only requires a little patience and fortitude to wait for things to change. May you all have the right understanding and do not lose sight of reality during the happy moments and not give way to despair in the face of misfortune. May you all be well, happy and peaceful! We can help your business...
Come Back Stronger! Dear local business partners, The Coronavirus has triggered a major economic shock, and local businesses are doing it tough. However, throughout history when transformational shocks to the economy occur, they always create opportunity too. In times of crisis, we need to push panic aside and make calm, clearheaded decisions – and look for OPPORTUNITY! • The JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments will assist in supporting the local economy. • Initial surveys show much of this stimulus money will be spent locally. • Restrictions are slowly easing, so expect consumers to be more active. • The restrictions have created pent up consumer demand across our region. • Demand for local consumer goods and services is likely to be higher than normal, given continued severe restrictions in other sectors. • For some, this could provide a greater opportunity to spend. There is plenty of opportunity! And the businesses that are most proactive will seize it. It may seem counter-intuitive, but there has never been a better or more important time to work on your next marketing move. Our team can help you engage with thousands of locals through our printed and digital newspapers, news websites, social channels and provide tools to enhance your online presence! Now is the time to plan and act! We’re ready to help businesses design and implement marketing campaigns that tap into local opportunities. No obligation, just trusted advice. Dave’s full-steam farewell Dandenong was brought to a standstill as Dave Mickle took his final ride on his beloved steam truck 'Ethel'. The 89-year-old founding member of Melbourne Steam Traction Engine Club had devised his send-off in planning his funeral several years ago. And true to his word, his mates Rob Jones and Ben Klaster fired up the boiler on the immaculately-restored 1924 steam truck and carried Mr Mickle to his resting place at Dandenong Cemetery on 14 May. With a top speed of 22 km/h, 'Ethel' was at full steam on her slow journey from Dandenong Le Pine/White Lady Funerals. Mr Klaster stoked the fire while Mr Jones worked the steering and gears. They set off with a blast of the truck's whistle along Princes Highway, and sounded a second time as they passed Mr Mickle's home in Herbert Street. 'Ethel' vented a third toot past Dandenong Town Hall as people on the main street stopped in their tracks. It was an aptly show-stopping farewell for Mr Mickle, who was known internationally for his passion for steam engines. He'd lived in Dandenong since the 1940s, inheriting his passion for steam engines from his amateur historian father. 'Ethel' was named after his mother. "He was a strong supporter of preserving Australia's heritage, and was instrumental in saving countless tractors and other pieces of equipment by providing either entire units or parts of them to people who shared his passion," Mr Jones said. "His passion took him on adventures around the world several times, making many friends and sharing in some amazing experiences." Mr Mickle was a supporter of the Ballarat Tramway Museum, Steam Rail Victoria, Association of Railway Enthusiasts and the Light Railway Research Society. "But it was more of a delight to see how honoured and privileged two mates were in fulfilling Dave's final wish - to ride one last time on his favourite steam truck."

CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERS
Donning the orange suit By Danielle Kutchel After arriving in Australia as a migrant from Afghanistan, Zulfi Hydari was keen to give back to the country that had given him so many opportunities to achieve his dreams. It was this drive to support his new home that saw Mr Hydari don the orange overalls of the SES almost three years ago - and he’s never looked back. Since joining the Greater Dandenong SES, Mr Hydari says he has had the opportunity to learn a diverse range of skills. “Before I joined I had no idea how to use a chainsaw, and now I’ve got my licence through the SES,” he explained. “I’ve developed mapping and navigational skills too, and working on heights.” He’s also been able to participate in the vital work that the SES does. “I’ve done a lot of missing persons searches, lots of animal rescues and helped police with searches at crime scenes,” Mr Hydari recalled. “Helping with the fires was exciting - I was helping this year and last year in Gippsland.” Mr Hydari balances his volunteering with a full time job. After 5pm, he said, he is available to pursue his volunteering passion when needed. “It’s my home now, so I want to give to the community,” he explained. He added that he would recommend joining the SES to anyone who wants to help. “I want to encourage people to get into it, because it’s a really good experience. You get to meet people from different backgrounds and work with different departments like the police. “I’ve made a lot of friends through the SES, and I’m part of the SES family now. I’ll do this for a long time,” he said. Mr Hydari’s comments come as Australia marks National Volunteer Week. Wednesday 20 May was Wear Orange Wednesday, a day of thanks for Victorian SES volunteers like Mr Hydari. Landmarks around Greater Dandenong, including the Drum Theatre and lights along Lonsdale Street, glowed orange in support of the SES. Anyone interested in joining the SES should visit www.ses.vic.gov.au/volunteer

He Shall Power is sure to be one of the sentimental favourites in the RSN Sandown Cup final.
Picture: SUPPLIED
Can he Power home? By Jason Adams Pearcedale trainer David Crawford is dreaming of first Group 1 win at Sandown Park on Thursday night when He Shall Power lines up in the RSN Sandown Cup final. Crawford has a spent a lifetime dedicated to the sport of greyhound racing. He, along with wife Shona and son Robert, races a small team of greyhounds which they have bred and prepared for racing themselves - making the achievement of reaching a final of this status all the more rewarding. “It gives you a lot of satisfaction, having bred them yourself,” Crawford said. “My wife whelps the litters and we handle the puppies and educate them when they get older. We only have our own greyhounds - we haven’t got someone giving them to us ready
made so it’s up to us to make them what they are.” At just 25 months of age, He Shall Power was one of the youngest greyhounds to contest Thursday night’s heats. He’d had just 17 career starts entering the series for three wins and six placings and was on his debut over the 715-metre journey, however his two previous starts over 595 metres suggested he was ready for the step up in distance. And that proved to be the case, with He Shall Power leading for most of the trip before being caught late by Rockstar Beav, the greyhound that will start as one of the favourites in Thursday night’s $71,000 final. Despite his defeat, He Shall Power’s time was the second fastest recorded across the four heats and enters the final among the fancied runners, despite drawing Box 4.
“I was very pleased with his run,” continued Crawford. “He’s still learning and has only just turned two-years-old. He was checked over on Friday and has pulled up well as he always does.” In pre-Covid-19 times, Crawford would meet every Thursday morning for a coffee with a group of friends in Cranbourne. Fellow trainer Brendan Dewan is one of those who were part of that regular catch up and he is looking forward to cheering on He Shall Power in Thursday night’s final. “We’re so delighted for Dave. I just hope He Shall Power performs well for him because he deserves it,” said Dewan. “He’s always had city winners, but it’d be great for Dave if he could get a Group 1 winner. We’d be so rapt for him.”
Dewan had a night to remember in his own right on Thursday, with Dewana Classic saluting in the 11th race on the card - at $88.50 on the tote, no less. It was Dewan’s first Sandown victory since July 2018. The staggering tote price is the third highest winning dividend on record at Sandown. The RSN Sandown Cup is the country’s premier race for staying greyhounds, and the 2020 edition is shaping as one of the most open seen in many years. Rockstar Beav, Blazing Cartier and True Detective will by vying for race favouritism after impressive heat wins, while proven group race performers Just Terms and Ella Enchanted are also given a winning chance. The RSN Sandown Cup is the final Group 1 final to be run across Sandown’s May carnival and will be run as the sixth race on Thursday night.
Blazing Cartier blitzes her heat as the Cup looms large By Peter Quilty Unsung heroine Blazing Cartier rewrote the script in Thursday night’s heats of the Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup (over 715 metres). Trainer Robert Britton is now chasing his third Sandown Cup win in four years after Blazing Cartier won her heat in clockwork style. He scored with Fanta Bale in 2017 and Tornado Tears in 2018, with Tornado Tears finishing seventh in last year’s final. Ironically, it was five-time Group 1 winner Tornado Tears and his younger full brother Sandown 715-metre track record holder Here’s Tears - who were considered Britton’s mainstays. But Blazing Cartier came up with precision timing in Heat 3. Noted as a come-from-behind stayer, Blazing Cartier set the scene by jumping straight to the lead before being challenged early by latest staying find, Mister Harlewood. But the superior stamina of Blazing Cartier ($9.50) came to the fore and she streaked away with an effortless win over Zoom Top winner Just Terms ($11.00) with Mister Harlewood ($1.40) fading for third in 41.93 seconds. A three-time Group 1 finalist, Blazing Cartier registered her 13th win from 48 starts. 18 STAR JOURNAL

Blazing Cartier was incredible in Thursday’s heats of the Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup. Picture: SUPPLIED Well, if the third heat was a surprise, then Heat 4 was a major upset. Sentimental favourite Tornado Tears was resuming after a 110-day let-up but was still expected to reach his third successive Sandown Cup final. But in a roughhouse affair, Bronski Beat ($16.20) skipped away with an unassailable lead to win by 9.8 lengths over Zipping Clifford ($11.40) with Tornado Tears ($4.20) third
in 42.07 seconds. Submission finished fourth, 10.8 lengths from the winner, while last year’s winner Rajasthan was sixth - beaten by 15.4 lengths. Trained at Lara by Brenda Pursell, Bronski Beat registered his ninth - and so far most important - win from 29 starts. Punters rallied for the enigmatic, but potentially freakish, Here’s Tears in Heat 1.
During this year’s Australian Cup Carnival at The Meadows, Here’s Tears won the Group 1 Fanta Bale Super Stayers (over 725 metres) and finished second in the Zoom Top (725 metres). But it was the Andrea Dailly-trained Rockstar Beav which prevailed. It was his 19th win from 71 starts, and his fourth win from his past six starts. A dual Group 1 finalist, Rockstar Beav ($4.50) defeated He Shall Power ($4.40) by 1.4 lengths with Here’s Tears a further 1.8 lengths away third in 41.69 seconds. Front-running staying star True Detective went ‘coast-to-coast’ in Heat 2. Trained by Jeff Britton, True Detective ($2.90) was never in doubt, defeating Ella Enchanted ($6.30) by 4.7 lengths with Renewed ($33.40) a further 4.2 lengths away third in 41.88 seconds. A three-time Group 1 finalist, True Detective notched his 22nd win from 38 starts. It was his eighth win in 10 starts from Box 1, and his fourth win from eight starts over Sandown’s 715-metre trip. The Jamie Ennis-trained Ella Enchanted has now made consecutive Sandown Cup finals. Last year, she finished runner-up to Rajasthan. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Simon Told Helen has had an eye-catching start to his greyhound racing career.
Picture: SUPPLIED
The best since Fernando? By Mick Floyd Simon Told Helen’s Harrison-Dawson win at Sandown Park on Thursday not only consolidated his standing as the country’s premier greyhound, but continued his path to becoming one of the sport’s greatest ever. It’s a big call, especially for a greyhound that is still just 28 months of age. But, after just 23 starts, his career is on a trajectory that can only be compared to arguably the greatest sprinter of all time - Fernando Bale. Simon Told Helen has been benchmarked against Fernando Bale before, having ran what is believed to be the fastest middle section when winning the Cup Night Sprint on TAB Melbourne Cup night last November - going faster than Fernando Bale did at the height of his powers. Six months later, a comparison of their race records is remarkable. On 21 May 2015, Fernando Bale won at Sandown Park in his 23rd career start by one-anda-half lengths in 29.23. He had three Group 1 wins and prize money of $542,000. On 21 May 2020, Simon Told Helen won at
Sandown Park in his 23rd career start by oneand-a-half lengths in 29.23. It was his third Group 1 win and, had the race been run at preCovid-19 levels, would have taken his prize money to $540,505. They also ran identical second splits in their respective runs (18.51), but it’s how they get to that mark that separates them. Fernando Bale was renowned for his blinding early speed running 4.93 that night, just half a length outside of his first split record. He averaged a 4.96 first split across his eight career wins. Simon Told Helen doesn’t have that same speed at box rise but musters like no other greyhound in the country. He ran ‘just’ 5.05 on Thursday night after stepping modestly, and averages 5.06 in his four Sandown Park wins to date. Simon Told Helen’s middle section of 13.46 recorded on Thursday was just 0.03 seconds outside of the time he recorded on Cup night, and equal to Fernando Bale’s fastest time between the pegs. Like Fernando Bale, the punters haven’t missed Simon Told Helen. Fernando Bale started as favourite in 19 of his first 23 starts,
with an average starting price of $2.45. Simon Told Helen has started favourite on 21 occasions at an average starting price of $2.02. The punters’ greater confidence may come from the fact that his record may be even better than Fernando Bale’s at the same point of his career. While both greyhounds have three Group 1s to their names after 23 starts, Simon Told Helen has now won six group races and has qualified for 10 group finals - including the National Derby, from which he was scratched due to a spider bite. Fernando Bale had four group wins from the four finals from which he qualified. Amazingly, Simon Told Helen has never contested a Grade 5 race. His last start in a graded race was at his fourth career start - a Grade 6 win at Sandown Park - with every run subsequent being a group race or group race qualifier. At the same stage of his career, Fernando Bale had run in 10 graded races, with four of them free-for-alls. Simon Told Helen’s trainer David Burnett has known for some time he has a smart greyhound and relishes the excitement he brings
to the track. He’s very much enjoying the ride it’s giving both him and his close-knit group of owners, but cautious not to get caught up in the hype. “(I’m) just relieved,” he said after his Harrison-Dawson triumph. “With all of the build-up during the week, there has been a lot of talk about the dog and his ability. Up until now he really hasn’t taken on the best of the best. “To do it at Sandown Park and against open grade company, I’m just rapt that the dog could show what he could do.” Truly, nothing excites fans of the sport - or opens up the sport to new fans - like a champion in full flight. While Simon Told Helen has a lot more to do to match, or potentially even surpass, the lofty heights Fernando Bale reached by the end of his career (he finished his career with eight Group 1 victories and almost $1.3m in prize money), his career could not have got off to a more impressive start. Simon Told Helen may be the result of a well kept secret, but he is no secret any more.
Soccer aims for its 2020 return as restrictions ease By Nick Creely Football Victoria (FV) is aiming to have all competitive soccer back and up and running by early July after setting its proposed return to play dates. Off the back of the Victorian State Government’s decision to ease Stage 3 restrictions relating to Covid-19, FV has finalised its strategy to get clubs, and leagues, back into action. In a statement issued on 19 May, FV advised that - for all community clubs, both seniors and juniors - the proposed resumption date is 28 June. For all NPL junior clubs the date is 20 June, while for all NPL senior clubs a resumption in early July has been set. With the government allowing clubs across the state to resume training in groups of 10 or less, FV has said it’s about maintaining caution and adopting a sensible and safe strategy to ensure there are no health risks. “FV is committed to taking a cautious and sensible approach with regard to the safety of all participants in our sport, be they players, coaches, staff or fans,” the statement read. “However, we also understand there is a dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
pressing need for clarity regarding when competitions are expected to resume. “FV has been engaged in ongoing discussions with FFA, State and Federal Governments [including Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV)] and with clubs at all levels to establish a suitable time to Return to Play. “This has involved the development of a number of scenarios which are still being finalised.” FV, has, however advised that these are target dates only and are subject to further health advice. But the organisation believes setting a date is indicative of its commitment to get competitive football at at levels back up and running. “Football Victoria will continue to keep the football community informed and updated in the coming weeks with regard to any developments, especially in regard to the resumption of increased training numbers and, ultimately, the return of competition play,” the statement said.
