Green light for road works By Justin Flynn Works to improve safety at a notorious Ocean Grove intersection will begin in August. Traic lights will be installed at the Orton Street and Presidents Avenue intersection which almost claimed the life of 18-year-old motorcyclist Tyler Peace, ater a collision with a car in April 2018. Following community consultation, Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) will also implement several other changes to help improve safety at the intersection, including: • New traic lights to provide safer access for
turning vehicles; • Improved footpath connections and cycling lanes to boost safety; • A new raised safety platform on Orton Street that will help to physically slow vehicles approaching the intersection from the east; • Upgraded street lighting to improve night time visibility at the intersection; and • ‘Keep clear’ zones installed outside nearby driveways. he Victorian government has invested $2.5million to upgrade the intersection ater the community raised concerns about road safety at the site in 2018.
hroughout 2019, RRV undertook extensive consultation with the local community and stakeholders to better understand the needs, impacts and to work through any issues, particularly focusing on access to properties. “We have also worked closely with one land owner to ensure support for the project and agreement over terms for the acquisition of a small slice of land – currently used as a footpath,” a RRV spokesperson said. “In such a tight intersection, the design has had to accommodate multiple services at each corner, requiring several design changes and requests for dispensation to be able to it the
proposed footings for the new traic signals. “We have been working closely with all the service authorities [gas, power, water, phone and internet] around these issues. “hrough late 2019 and early 2020, we received clearance from all but one of the authorities. We are now working with Powercor to develop a plan for relocation of underground power lines. his has added to the planned works timeframe.” Tender documents went out last month with an extended tender validity period. Construction for the intersection upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Footy, netball season cancelled By Justin Flynn here will be no senior football or netball for premiership points this year. AFL Barwon last week cancelled the Bellarine Football Netball League season with 79 per cent of senior clubs across all competitions (GFNL, BFNL, CDFNL, GDFNL) saying they would not support a premiership season or were accepting of a inal AFL Barwon Commission decision. Junior football and netball is set to proceed, but details of how have not been inalised. Ocean Grove coach Pete Davey said he accepted the decision to cancel the season. “here’s been a number of feelings playing out since Tuesday,” he told the Voice. “Disappointed is obvious, but there’s also a sense of relief that the decision has inally been made. he hardest part about all of this has been the ‘not knowing’, at least we can plan for the future now. he coaching staf and players are all pretty much on the same page there.” Davey said the playing list was “lying” on the training track and that it was “healthy and rock-hard it”. “he COVID hiatus was diicult to manage but we felt we were in a better position to play ater the break than most clubs would have been and that was due to the quantity and quality of personnel training,” he said. Davey said he would have picked “at least 12” Under-19 players in his round one senior side. “We’ll be training those boys and holding them to standards, as if they were our senior side, to get them as ready as we can for 2021,” he said. “We will also be scheduling weekly events for the senior group, just to ensure that everyone remains connected. he worry for every club is that players will drop of and not return to

football so we will do everything we can to keep the boys engaged and part of the club.” Davey said 2020 was going to be a year where he “aimed to set acceptable standards, create a positive culture and a commitment to turning up for the community as best we can”. “We expect to be very competitive in 2021
and have already entered conversations with several recruits … who all tick the boxes as far as character, skill and age that we’re looking for. We expect to make a very sharp rise up the ladder.” Barwon Heads president Tim Goddard said, although disappointed, the reigning premiers
supported the decision. “We fully support the decision made by AFL Barwon,” he said. “We will support our junior footy and netball programs and our senior womens footy teams when a decision is made on how their seasons look. “We are a strong and united club and believe that despite the pandemic and the cancellation of the season, we look forward to building our culture, uniting our playing lists and readying our 2019 premiership lag for its unfurling in 2021.” Drysdale junior vice-president Ben Reyment had similar thoughts. “While disappointed the BFL won’t be going ahead for 2020, we understand this is done for the health of our players, coaches and community, as well as ensuring the inancial success of clubs,” he said. “We have some amazing sponsors and club people who have been really supportive of diferent fundraising eforts and sponsorship so far this year, which has ensured we were ready for whatever 2020 threw at us. “We also know not all clubs are in as strong a position. We will now put our focus onto retaining our 2020 playing list, as well as adding to that list for 2021. We still have some home-grown players playing in higher levels across the country that we would love to see in brown and gold again.” “We also hope the planned junior and women’s seasons can provide everyone with some footy later in the year. “Our junior section has always been really strong, and our women’s teams continue to lourish. “We hope we can get our senior players and coaches invested across these teams, and continue to build a strong culture across the club for the future.”

Help for those who need it By Cr Trent Sullivan As we know, the COVID-19 pandemic has let many residents in a diicult position, which means life is now even harder for those who were already doing it tough. My heart goes out to all those experiencing challenges. Ensuring locals can put food on the table is a big priority of council and a driving force behind our landmark decision to invest $1.7 million over ive years into food security. We’ve partnered with the Geelong Food Relief Centre with the aim of increasing Greater Geelong’s food distribution and storage capacity. Up to $1 million will go towards renovating a North Geelong building to repurpose it for food relief. his facility will then act as a storage and distribution centre accessible to relief agencies from across the region, including Ocean Grove-based Feed Me Bellarine. At the moment, the region’s current food assistance system provides about 2.16 million meals yearly, leaving a shortfall of 350,000 meals. hat shortfall will jump to as high as one million meals a year by 2031 if the system doesn’t grow. It’s so sad to think there are Bellarine residents going without. My hope is that this cash will drive signiicant change and help
society’s most vulnerable. Speaking of funding where it’s needed; community groups have beneited from the inal round of the 2019-20 Community Grants program. One of them is the Ocean Grove Business Association, which has happily received $5000 for the ‘Christmas in the Grove’ festival.

A man walking his dog in Ocean Grove thought he had stumbled across a dead human half submerged in the Barwon River. However Bellarine Police said the remains were not human and the body was most likely a seal. The man alerted police after noticing a strong smell around Beaver Street on June 10.
Arrest over grafiti Bellarine police arrested a man after an extensive investigation into grafiti on the Bellarine Peninsula. The investigation related to acts of grafiti on the Bellarine Peninsula, Armstrong Creek and Belmont areas between August 2019 and May 2020. A 19-year-old Point Lonsdale man has been charged with 133 charges including criminal damage and grafiti. He has been bailed to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court on September 30.

Jail sentence appeal rejected By Justin Flynn A six-time Ocean Grove Football Club premiership player sentenced for an assault on his ex-wife and her partner has had an appeal rejected by the Supreme Court of Appeal. Adrian Stapleton, 45, appealed his sentence of three years and seven months jail, saying the term was “manifestly unjust”. Stapleton was sentenced in February 2019 ater being charged with aggravated burglary, intentionally causing injury, intentionally damaging property, thet and unlawful assault
for a 4am attack on his ex-wife and her partner on August 21, 2016. Court documents revealed that Stapleton said on the day of the attack he had been drinking heavily and told police there had been a “slow build-up of emotion”. He had been taking medication for a neck injury and accepted that he should not have consumed alcohol at the time, the document stated. he documents state that on the morning of the attack, Stapleton forced his way into his former wife’s house and attacked her partner.
When his ex-wife attempted to intervene, Stapleton “picked her up and threw her against the bedroom wall, causing her head to go through the plaster”. Stapleton let the scene and pulled the windscreen wipers from his ex-wife’s partner’s car, but returned about 30 minutes later to resume the attack. Stapleton stole his ex-wife’s mobile phone before leaving the scene, the document stated. Police attended and observed damage to the door frame and hinge of the front door. here were two small holes in the plaster of the wall
of the hallway, and a large hole in the plaster of the wall of the bedroom. Police also found clumps of Stapleton’s wife’s hair on the kitchen bench and on the loor. hey located a broken windscreen wiper on the ground, at the front of the house. In rejecting the appeal, the judge said she was “not satisied that the applicant deeply regretted his wrongdoing and desired to atone for it”. he judge said although there was some level of remorse by Stapleton, she considered that it “should not be given great weight”.

Barwon Heads Cricket Club coach Jonathan Gill said his focus would be on youth and rebuilding following the departure of several key players. Sam Schaller, Lewy Hyland and Lachie Campbell have joined Murgheboluc, while Charlie Hurst will also play in the Geelong Cricket Association. he Seagulls reappointed Gill as coach for his third year at the helm. “here’s a great opportunity from within the playing group for senior players to lead the club and I’m really excited to see our juniors come through,” he said. “It probably could be classiied as a rebuild, but we still have some very good players and we will be looking to add to our list.” Excited by the prospect and challenge that lies ahead, Gill said the rapid development in Barwon Heads’ junior program has been considerable with the club promoting a number of teenagers to represent the club at senior A1 and B1 level last season. “A number of our junior boys have been playing Barwon Rockets and our girls [in the] Rockette,” he said. “Once the COVID-19 restrictions are eased, I’m really eager to start coaching again and to see just how much they’ve developed over the winter months.” While Gill said the loss of Hyland (476 runs last season) and Schaller (294 runs and 28 wickets) would hurt, he believed it created an opportunity for others to step up. “It’s no secret we’ve had three senior departures from our list and we will need a few tweaks for team balance, however with players returning and the depth of our juniors, my realistic goal is for all four senior sides to play inals this year,” he said. Plenty to feast on for bird lovers Winter is in full swing, but there’s been some ine, cool days that have been perfect for getting out and about. I’ve had a few outings over the past few weeks, including another drive to Newstead to see if I could spot the owlet nightjar and of course it was not in its hollow. I’m not giving up though. I drove to Anglesea, via Point Addis one day, and the highlight of that trip was seeing a pair of gang gang cockatoos having a feast on gum nuts. hese birds are just beautiful so I watched them for a good half an hour and they didn’t seem the least bit worried about me hanging around. On the way back I stopped at a friend’s house that is located in the new estate in Torquay near the new high school, and I saw an Australian hobby in the same spot that I noticed one a few months ago. I also popped into Black Rock at the end of 13th Beach, and saw eight red-capped plovers, one double-banded plover and four red-necked stints. Stints are migratory shorebirds, so it appears that these birds are remaining in southern Australia for the winter rather than lying to the Northern Hemisphere. Double-banded plovers are the only waders that migrate west to east from Australia to New Zealand. here were also four hooded plovers on the beach. Unfortunately there was a man
Male gang gang cockatoo (top), Carole’s image of a common bronzewing, and a double-banded plover at Black Rock. (Pictures: Supplied)
walking a dog of lead in the area where there are supposed to be no dogs permitted, so I had to leave the beach. On this subject, Kevin emailed me and told me about an of-lead dog running rampant at Blue Waters Lake, where there are many signs asking for dogs to be on leads at all times.
Kevin also saw people feeding bread to the birds in the lake. Most typical sandwich bread is a poor food choice for birds. Bread contains very little protein, which birds need to develop muscles and feathers. I had a wonderful experience with Robin and Garry from Bellarine Birdlife. hey have a
property on the Bellarine where there has been a lock of eight blue-winged parrots feeding on the saltmarsh plants. I dropped around and saw the blue-winged parrots, which was fantastic, but I managed to get a bit too close to them and they lew away before I snapped a decent photo. I had been looking around the Bellarine for blue-winged parrots for a while, so it was great to see them. he blue-winged parrot has an olive-green head and upper body, with yellow underparts and a dark blue band across the forehead. It gets its name from the large, dark blue patch on the wings. his is one of the many species of birds that breed in Tasmania migrate to the mainland. I received a lovely email from Judie, who is a member of Bellarine Birdlife. She went for a walk at Ocean Grove Nature Reserve on a perfect day when there were so many birds on the north track. Judie’s highlight was that she inally got a good view of European goldinches and a male golden whistler. he bonus was seeing three beautiful wallabies and an echidna. Carole, who is also a member of Bellarine Birdlife, also sent me an email about her venture to Ocean Grove Nature Reserve. Carole found that the north track was bathed in aternoon sunlight so she dawdled along until she heard a cacophony of sounds. here were silver eyes, grey fantails, goldinches, wrens, a yellow-faced honeyeater and of course (the bully boys), the New Holland honeyeaters. In the trees, just as amazed as Carole was, was an audience of common bronze-wings and black-faced cuckoo-shrikes. Just as quickly as it happened they decided it was all over. Quietness. It was the most unbelievable experience.

Village growth continues You can see the passion in Geofrey Reeve’s eyes as he walks through Bellarine Springs retirement village. Mr Reeve is the chief executive, owner, engineer and owner/builder of the village and there is no doubt he feels immense pride in his creation. he village is in the midst of starting construction on stage 5, with 15 new homes to be built at the Drysdale facility. “We decided to be in control of our own destiny and be the builder ourselves,” he says.
“We have a construction team and we can roll out the stages to meet demand. “We can ensure the quality of the product that we give to people is up to scratch.” he village is exactly that. A village. “It’s a normal residential setting,” Mr Reeve says. “here are no straight roads and the houses are all diferent forms. “here is a sense of community here. You’re not just a number.” With an indoor swimming pool, gym, tennis court and full-size bowling green with
sweeping views over Corio Bay (you can see the light towers of GMHBA Stadium clearly), there’s much to do outside of your home. he next stage of construction will feature a walking path to Drysdale town centre, which is only 500 metres away. he path will be locked and gated and only village residents will have a key. Construction of stage 5 homes has begun and interested parties can contact sales manager Wendy Prascevic on 0455-112 360 or visit bellarinesprings.com.au
Ami Hodgkinson admits she set the bar “a little low” in her quest to raise money for cancer charity Redkite while aiming for “washboard abs”. he Ocean Grove mum set a modest target of $100 as she began doing 60 crunches a day for a total of 1800 in June. Ami had raised more than $400 last week, smashing her initial target in days. “I’d have to do more than one month to get a six-pack though,” the 47-year-old laughed. Ami remembered feeling “numb” and “overwhelmed” when Cody, now 13, was diagnosed in 2009 with Retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer in children. Cody spent just six weeks of 2010 at home during 12 months of chemotherapy and other treatments. A single mum at the time, Ami gave up work to drive Cody to hospital and care for him. “We do some funny married couple stuf on stage,” Langton said. “Because he’s a singer as well, he doesn’t just play what’s on the page – he knows where I’m going and he can sort of follow me around musically.” he couple planned to “beef up” the piano for their throat-scorching ’70s tribute. “We could get people watching who are ive-years-old or 105-years-old,” Langton said. “Our plan is to make it family-friendly but it’s a little edgier than our normal morning shows.”
Jones, who recently played piano in another live-streamed gig, described hearing “crickets” in an empty venue ater a big crescendo as “a bit weird”. “he good thing about this show is that we will have each other.” Ater a “busy” 2019 touring and playing gigs, the couple had enjoyed a break during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jones said. Married life is “one big cabaret” for Melissa Langton and Mark Jones, who will live stream “the best and the worst of the ’70s” next Friday. “he ’70s has a lot of stupid stuf that we can take the p*** out of, but lots of really rich, beautiful music too,” Jones said. he pianist and songstress will perform rearranged versions of tracks such as AC/DC’s Big Balls and Skyhooks Living in the ’70s at Geelong Arts Centre. “It’s Big Balls but not as you know it – it’s much sillier,” Jones said. “Mark’s changed the words to some songs, so it’s a bit comic.” he cabaret couple have been performing together since they met about 30 years ago, when Jones played piano for his future wife during a concert. “We’re very, very diferent,” Langton said. “He’s quite reserved but darkly funny, which I like. Mark’s quite dry and I’m whatever the opposite of dry is.” hey soon became good friends but it took almost a decade for them to start dating in 1998. In 2001, the couple won a Sydney cabaret contest together, earning a trip to the New York Cabaret Convention. hey went ahead with the trip in October, despite the September 11 attacks six weeks earlier. Jones proposed to Langton in Café Lalo, made famous by its cameo in 1998 romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail. he couple “got hitched” three days later by a Mexican celebrant with an accent they struggled to understand, Langton said. “In honour of her we went out and had Mexican for our wedding night dinner.” Ater almost two decades, the couple still perform together.

A new travel-inspired gitware store is bringing treasures from around the world to Ocean Grove. Just Landed in the Grove is the brainchild of Helloworld Ocean Grove owners Nicole Bryan and Lesley Judd, born in the wake of travel bans imposed to stop the spread of COVID-19. Instead of sharing the joy of planning and booking holidays for excited clients, travel agents have been responding to a tsunami of cancellations and postponements. Even with restrictions beginning to ease in Australia and some other countries, the road to recovery is going to be long.

“We put our heart and soul into our business for many years and to see all our hard work pretty much wiped out by something completely out of our control has been just heartbreaking,” Nicole said. Faced with ongoing operating costs of keeping the travel agency open and in need of a positive focus, the pair came up with the idea of a travel-themed git store. he Helloworld store at Ocean Grove Marketplace has been remodelled to incorporate the new gitware range, which includes original art and prints, git cards, a selection of bags, travel maps, jewellery and fashion, all inspired by the owners’ travels around the world. Locals and visitors craving escape or adventure can now plan their next holiday or pick up something special to satisfy their wanderlust.
“Right now we can’t send our clients out into the world, but we can bring the world to them,” Nicole said. “here really is nothing else like this that we know of, and we’re so excited to bring this concept to Ocean Grove.” he store’s range of unique gitware relects

Favourite shows new stripes Zebra Bar & Bistro has re-opened with a fresh new look ater owners Paul Young and Caron Zillwood took the opportunity to do some renovations while the venue was closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. And while the bar is showing of its new stripes, it’s also keeping some favourites. he ‘Zebra 2 U’ takeaway service, introduced so customers could enjoy a bistro meal of steak, seafood or parmis at home during COVID lockdown, has been so popular it will continue going forward. “It has certainly been a hard few months for the hospitality industry but the overwhelming support from Ocean Grove has been tremendous,” Paul says. “We have loved seeing all the venues re-open and we know how hard everyone has worked to re-open under the strict guidelines. We await the further easing of restrictions and will ensure we continue to adhere to all the rules we must operate under to ensure everyone’s safety.” Zebra Bar & Bistro is opening Wednesday to Sunday for dinner and weekends for lunch. Caron says it’s been fantastic seeing the smiling faces of their customers again. “Our irst week of re-opening for dine-in has been very rewarding,” she says. “Our diners helped us ensure their experience was enjoyable and safe and understood why we had to enforce strict rules – they were just happy to be out and loved that we were providing table service, which is a new way of operating for us. “We really appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience.” Zebra Bar & Bistro is known for its seafood and steak dishes, so of course these feature on the menu, as well as the ever-popular parmis. Paul and Caron are working on some new additions to the menu that they know their
customers will love. hey’re also increasing the beverage list. In line with current restrictions, Zebra Bar & Bistro can have a limited number of patrons inside and some outside on the
