A Berwick aged care facility has gone into lockdown for at least two weeks after a staff member tested positive to coronavirus. A spokesperson for the Villa Maria Catholic Home (VMCH) Berwick facility said no residents were showing symptoms of Covid-19 but as a “precautionary measure” the facility had entered a “full lockdown”. It comes as the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) reported a staff member at the facility had tested positive to the virus on Monday 27 July. “A staff member, who only works weekends, in a set location and with no resident contact, tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday 19 July,” the VMCH spokesperson said. “Staff who were in close contact have been tested and will selfisolate at home for 14 days. “Due to the increasing number of positive cases within the community, the Department and VMCH are approaching all positive cases with an ‘abundance of caution’,” the spokesperson said. “Onsite testing of all residents and staff has been organised by the Commonwealth Department of Health and will take place Tuesday 28 July. “At this stage, no residents are unwell with Covid-19 symptoms. Precautionary measures, including the wearing of face masks and temperature testing for all, have been in place and were well established prior to these incidents occurring.” Public health officials have been notified of the lockdown and VMCH says its following procedures recommended by the Department of Health and the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia. The VMCH spokesperson said all residents were being closely monitored and should any signs of ill health appear, VMCH would seek medical attention immediately and inform families. “VMCH is taking every step as recommended by authorities to contain the spread, implementing health measures that balance care and compassion with protection and caution.”

IN BRIEF

Covid cases climb By Brendan Rees Covid-19 infections are continuing to climb in Casey which now stands at 186 active cases, according to the state’s latest health data. Victoria reported a further 295 cases in the 24 hours to Wednesday 29 July, bringing the state total to 4839 active cases, including 502 infected health care workers. The additional cases were down on from the worst day of the crisis so far on Monday 27 July with 532 new cases. Nine deaths have been reported of people aged in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, according to the 29 July figures. There are 307 hospital patients with Covid-19, with 41 in intensive care. To date, 4123 people have recovered from the virus. Seven of the nine deaths are linked to aged care facilities. To date, 92 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria. In neighbouring Greater Dandenong, cases have risen markedly to 130 active cases while

Cardinia had 23 and Frankston 31. In other developments, the Villa Maria Catholic Home Berwick aged care facility has gone into lockdown for at least two weeks after a staff member tested positive to coronavirus. A spokesperson for the facility said no residents were showing symptoms of Covid-19 but the facility had entered a “full lockdown” as a “precautionary measure”. Forty-four cases have also been linked to Outlook Gardens Aged Care Facility in Dandenong North. Victoria Police have fined 103 people for flouting rules in the 24 hours to Wednesday 29 July. Three of the infringements were issued at vehicle checkpoints and 33 for people failing to wear a face covering when leaving home. Police say three fines were issued to people gathering to celebrate a birthday in the Mornington Peninsula while four people were issued fines after police spotted them in a car together and confirmed none of them resided at the same address.

The State Government meanwhile announced an expanded team of door knockers to follow-up positive cases who couldn’t be contacted by phone or refused to co-operate. The team included Department of Health and Human Services authorized officers supported by the Australian Defence Force. From 29 July, employers must notify WorkSafe immediately when they’re aware that a worker has tested positive for Covid-19. It also applies to contractors and self-employed people. Meanwhile, the Australian Medical Association federal president and Melbourne GP Dr Tony Bartone said the Victorian hospital workforce was already stretched, and will be further tested by the State’s Covid-19 aged care crisis. “An elective surgery pause should be for the shortest time possible,” Dr Bartone said. “Deferring surgery denies patients treatment they need. Deferring too long risks increasing a patient’s pain or illness.”

Police appeal following theft Police are seeking public assistance to identify two men after a theft in Narre Warren South on Monday, 15 June. Police have released images of two men whom they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries. The first male is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance. At the time of the offence, he was wearing a light coloured jumper and lightcoloured track pants. The second male is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance with brown hair and facial hair. He was wearing a light coloured jumper, light coloured pants and a light coloured hat. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote reference number CSV3846.

Speeder nabbed A 37-year-old Cranbourne man has been allegedly clocked travelling at 77km/h over the speed limit on the Princes Freeway in Berwick on Friday 24 July. The man was allegedly caught driving at 157km/h in an 80km/h zone by Cardinia Highway Patrol who intercepted his Ford Mustang near Clyde Road. The driver was arrested and interviewed in relation to a number of charges. The Mustang was impounded for a period of 30 days resulting in a $1020 towing fee. Police say the driver is expected to be charged. Highway Patrol were patrolling the Princes Freeway roadwork zone near Clyde Road as a part of Operation Sumatra, designed to target high risk driving. The widening works has resulted in the speed limit being reduced to 80km/h.

Year 5 student Chanithu won top prize in the Metro Trains’ poster competition.

On the move: Young artists win top prize By Brendan Rees A pair of creative siblings at a Berwick primary school have taken out the top prizes in Metro Trains’ annual rail safety poster competition. Metro invited children from Foundation through to Year 6 from schools across Melbourne to participate in the ‘Safe Travel on Metro Trains’ competition. With a unique remote learning environment due to coronavirus, students were challenged to combine rail safety messages and advice around health, hygiene and social distancing. Siblings Vinuthi, 8, and Chanithu, 10, of Brentwood Park Primary School claimed top prizes for their entries.

Grade three student Vinuthi won first prize for the Years 3 to 4 category for her poster and took home a Nintendo Switch game console and game. Her poster promoted a range of safe behaviours including walking bikes through level crossings, standing behind the yellow line, and keeping a safe social distance from others. Year 5 student Chanithu took home a Playstation 4 Pro console and gaming headset for the Years 5 to 6 category for his winning poster that promoted social distancing and the work of emergency services workers, and calling on people to remove headphones at level crossings. Proud dad Chamal Wijesekara said his children, who loved to draw and paint, spent

hours on their impressive pieces. “Normally it’s very hard to keep them in one place for this kind of activity,” he said. “We were very, very excited!” Due to coronavirus restrictions, Metro conducted remote video conferencing sessions with the winning students and their principals. Metro community education unit team leader Luke Martin said the competition was a terrific way to engage young people on the importance of being safe around trains. “The remote learning requirements presented some challenges and I’m so proud of all our winners and participants - they’ve really risen to the challenge,” he said. The competition comes ahead of Rail Safety Week (10 - 16 August).

A Narre Warren park has been cleaned up after it was trashed on Friday 17 July. Ray Bastin Reserve was reportedly littered with booze bottles and rubbish with the incident reported to Casey Council. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said he was shocked by the incident and “terribly disappointed” that people did not seem to be getting the message of socially distancing. “We need people of all ages to abide by the rules on leaving their home and the importance of distancing,” he said. Secondly, he said the incident was “just unfair to all those residents who use the park daily for exercise and recreation”. “We are all affected by this virus and we need to support one another in these difficult times - not damage and vandalise those spaces where we enjoy the limited recreation we can enjoy presently.” Casey Council manager of sustainability and waste Michael Jansen said staff cleaned up the park on Monday 20 July, and encouraged the public to report any gatherings of people causing a disturbance or breaching Covid-19 restrictions to the police. Litter or dumped rubbish should be reported to the City of Casey via its website or on 9705 5200, Mr Jansen said.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Main Street masks up It was masks on last week for the residents at Main Street Village in Pakenham along with all other Melburnians. And it was masks-on for a totally different group of Village People in Main Street Village as well! These creatively carved Coleonema (common name - Golden Diosma), shaped into solitary souls standing along a pathway, donned masks as a visible reminder for residents to wear their masks from today to help stay healthy. “Try not to laugh out loud when you stroll along the path past the ‘Village People’. I bet you will crack up in stitches” said one resident. “Our gardener, Murray, shaped what were just these ordinary looking bushes, Golden Diosma I think he calls them, into this gaggle of golden girls and boys.” Di McKellar, the village manager said “They are such great fun amongst the doom and gloom at the moment and they are a fun way to convey the serious message to us all to mask up as well. “Murray created them from these ordinary looking shrubs. This area was a bit overgrown and untidy previously. He didn’t tell me initially, he just started shaping them up when he came to work with us recently. He’s given some punk haircuts up. “Apparently, he saw the sculpture potential and began creating this little tribe with an end in mind. He’s very creative as well as highly skilled with a great sense of humour too! “Murray also co-opted Frank, one of the residents who loves wood working, to help him fashion the stakes he attached the eyes to. “Yesterday when he showed me the photo on his phone I laughed out loud! I asked him to please prune another shrub tomorrow so we can put a mask on it. It will lighten everyone’s day! It’s a fun way to reinforce the important health message for our residents. Little did I know that he had already shaped more than 8

other shrubs. This morning I gave him my bag of dress up things with bandanas and crazy sunglasses and a mask to put on them. You can see the results in the photos,” said Di. “Yes, I know these Village People aren’t the correct 1.5m social distance apart and so that’s why they all have masks and/or face coverings. It was too much to ask Murray to move them all! And again, it’s a wonderful way to reinforce the Covid Safe health message in our village to help keep our residents healthy. If plants can be Covid Safe so can people!” The village sculptor come horticulturist, Murray Christmas (yes he says his birthday is

25th December) said it was a “fun little project”. “There are heaps of these Golden Diosma (Coleonema pulchellum aurea) planted throughout the village. When I started six months back the majority were amorphous blobs. Some had hints of previous shapes but this group needed work. I was guided by each plant’s form, location and my imagination. “Gardens, like art, impact us in ways we don’t understand and lots of times in ways we don’t even realise. Gardens have a huge impact on us, from our food to our feelings, so why not make them fun and interesting?!” said Murray.

“So I created some different sculpture shapes. Some got “punk haircuts”, so I added eyes and mouths with leaves and twigs. Of course, they blew off, so I found some goggle eyes and Frank skilfully shaped some stakes for the eyes. “They looked great! When I showed Di the ‘Diosma Dioramas’, she laughed and suggested some masks and dress up glasses to bring some cheer to the residents. There’s eight or so dressed up now. The results are fun. There’s a pic of me with the ‘Where’s Wally Diosma Diorama’. My kids saw the pic and asked, “Which one’s the Wally?”

Woman earns viral rebuke By Brendan Rees Footage has emerged of a woman who refused to wear a mask at Bunnings Fountain Gate store on Friday 24 July. The three-and-half minute video, which went viral on social media, shows the woman being stopped by a staff member inside the store and asked whether she had a face mask. “Well it’s clear I don’t and you are not authorised to ask me or question me about it,” she says in the video. The woman is then directed to speak to a manager, who informs her she would need a medical certificate. “I actually don’t need a medical certificate,” she says. “You’re discriminating against me.” But the insistent woman snaps back: “You’re not authorised by the Australian Government to even question me about it.” Another manager then intervenes, telling her it’s a condition of entry to wear a face mask. “It’s an unlawful condition of entry, there-

fore that exposes you, personally and Bunnings to being sued for discrimination because it is in breach of the 1948 Charter of Human Rights to discriminate against men and women,” she says. Despite the repeated requests to stop filming, the woman refuses saying “this is my evidence against you”. When the managers asked if that is all, the woman filming says: “No, no, no, we’re going to have a wander”. Another video posted online showed the woman berating with police in the carpark after the incident in store. Deb Poole, chief operating officer of Bunnings said she was proud of the way her staff handled the matter, labelling the customer’s behaviour as “completely unacceptable”. “We won’t tolerate abuse against our team members and we have security at all metro Melbourne and Mitchell Shire stores as support. Our team will also alert the police should they encounter any difficulties,” she said.

At a press conference on Monday 27 July Premier Daniel Andrews took aim at those flouting strict coronavirus rules saying their behaviour was “appalling” and their views “have no basis in science or fact”. “Seriously, one more comment about human rights - honestly. It is about human life,” Mr Andrews said. This was echoed by Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner of regional operations Rick Nugent who slammed anti-maskers and described those not following coronavirus rules as “childish” and “completely unacceptable”. “My message to anyone planning to break the rules is simple: no-one has a human right to infect other people and place the entire Victoria community at risk,” he said. Hugh de Kretser, executive director of the Human Rights Law Centre said the order to wear masks was not a breach of human rights. “It’s a very small limit on personal freedom for a very good reason; saving lives and protecting public health,” he said.

State grants aim at keeping communities connected

A new grants program supporting local initiatives to help communities to stay connected during the coronavirus pandemic have opened. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas welcomed the opening of applications for the Let’s Stay Connected Fund, with grants available for community organisations, local government bodies, incorporated not-for-profits and industry groups. Grants of between $5000 and $200,000 are available to support innovative, communitybased initiatives that build connection, reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation and that can be implemented quickly - providing much-needed support across the state. The $1.3 million fund could potentially help community groups continue to operate by adapting the way they deliver programs or events, including through online forums. Other possibilities include support for communities to improve their digital skills and access online communication channels, or new ways for people to continue volunteering within their communities while maintaining physical distancing requirements. The fund responds to advice from the State Government’s Regional and Metropolitan Partnerships highlighting the link between social connection and community wellbeing and complements existing measures including the Victoria Together online portal that showcases the best of the state from live music and comedy to interactive exhibitions. Victoria Together offers a vast range of resources, also including children’s activities, live streaming from the Melbourne Zoo, exercise advice and recipes. Applications for the Let’s Stay Connected Fund are open until 31 August and applicants are encouraged to apply at djpr.vic.gov.au/ lets-stay-connected.

OPINION

Cameras will capture distracted drivers on their mobile phones from Wednesday 29 July. The cameras allow high-resolution images to be captured in all conditions, regardless of weather and light levels, and for those images to be reviewed in real time to detect potential offences. A three-month trial of state-of-the-art safety cameras, which will also be tested for people not wearing a seatbelt, will be rolled out across Victoria. If introduced, they will be able to operate from any location, 24 hours a day. However, motorists will not be issued infringements during the three months and number plate matching will not be undertaken. All photographs captured will be deleted, except for a limited number of de-identified images. The trial will help understand how the technology can be integrated with the existing road safety camera systems and ensure the cameras operate effectively and accurately. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville said: “This technology will detect those who choose to put lives at risk on our roads.” Research shows drivers who use a mobile phone while driving are four times more likely to cause a fatal road accident. Texting, browsing and emailing increase the crash risk even further - up to ten times. Testing will focus on a relocatable version of the technology across several metropolitan and regional locations and will be conducted by the technology provider, Acusensus, and the current traffic camera services contractor. Research conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre estimated an automated mobile phone detection cameras could prevent 95 casualty crashes per year and save taxpayers $21 million annually. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Second chance at life By Brendan Rees and Mitchell Clarke Michael Rojales recalls not being able to breathe when he was struck down by coronavirus. “I just had this non-stop cough which I described as like drowning,” the 46-year-old of Berwick says of the time he was admitted to hospital after contracting the virus. Mr Rojales says he began to feel ill while on a return flight from South Africa after attending a work conference in March. “When we arrived at the Melbourne Airport, they wouldn’t let us off the plane,” he said, as a woman was removed from the plane by people wearing hazmat suits after not being aware there had been a confirmed case of coronavirus on his flight. “A couple of days later I had a temperature and a mild cough and I was thinking - I will just go to the fever clinic to make sure I have corona,” he says. Two days after his arrival in Melbourne he began to feel a temperature and a mild cough. Michael went to a fever clinic and the next day was told he was positive for coronavirus. Three days later the father and pastor at the Berwick Church of Christ was admitted to Casey Hospital on 25 March. His condition worsened and Mr Rojales was then moved to intensive care at Monash Clayton Hospital where he was put into an induced coma for two weeks and relied on a ventilator to breathe. He suffered anaemia, pneumonia, nerve damage and acute kidney failure during this time. “I was connected to the ventilator to help me breathe but I stopped breathing all together, the ventilator was working at 100 percent.” says. “They spoke to my wife and asked her to prepare for the worse and prepare to say goodbye to me.”

When he did wake up his wife told him he had almost died. “I was in dreamland ... it was Easter Sunday,” Mr Rojales says. “One of the things that the nurse said to me was ‘Hey Michael, I just wanted to let you know that your wife and many people are praying for you’.” While Mr Rojales was in intensive care his wife had also become sick with coronavirus

Charity helps vulnerable By Brendan Rees A Casey charity is working tirelessly to feed families as demand for support during the pandemic skyrockets. Casey Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) cafe team leader Beata Stednik, who runs a food pantry from her Narre Warren North home, said her team were preparing up to 2000 meals per week for families and individuals - with an extra three deep commercial freezers purchased through donations to keep up with demand. “We have come across families that were on white bread for weeks till they heard about Casey ADRA Cafe,” she said. “These are the stories that make our hearts skip a beat knowing there are people we were able to help out and who appreciate our efforts. “Loss of jobs, not having the means to pay their mortgage forces them to seek help. Many are ashamed to ask for help and those that we are worried about. “We had one of our lovely clients take her own life as she saw no way out from the situation. Being a mother of two and not having proper accommodation and not enough finances to put food on the table pushed her over the edge. “We want to send a message to those families: We are all in it together and Casey ADRA Cafe as essential services is here to help you and no one needs to know about it.” Ms Stednik said her food pantry also provided a delivery service for those in isolation or are unable to pick-up and every Thursday, registered clients were able to pick-up pre-packed food parcels of fresh and non-perishable products from the Casey ADRA Cafe. “However, where there’s emergency we never say no and we prepare food as needed,” Ms Stednik said. Overwhelming generosity By Brendan Rees The Casey community is rallying around the family of a much-loved son and brother who lost his battle with metastatic bowel cancer on Sunday 26 July. Jarrad Camille, 20, died after being diagnosed with the disease in November last year. After enduring eight months of invasive therapy and surgery things however took a turn for the worse and doctors recently advised his family that there were no further treatment options available. Upon hearing the heartbreaking news, his family decided to bring him home - which they say was possible through the help of the Bolton Clarke nurses for wound care which have been looking after Jarrad following the surgery in February and also the nurses and doctors of Bethlehem Palliative Care that managed his daily medication. His mother Romina Camille said Jarrad had been through four of six cycles of chemotherapy which were disrupted due to emergency surgery, which meant the chemotherapy had to be paused for a short while. “We have to thank the surgeons of Monash Medical and the Colorectal Surgeons from Dandenong that were able to operate on him that day,” she said. “Sadly, while healing from surgery the opportunity to start chemotherapy again didn’t eventuate and he continued to have setbacks.

Jarrad Camille, 20, died after being diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer. To make things harder, the family were unable to visit Jarrad in hospital when Victoria underwent its first round of coronavirus lockdown.

But the family say the team at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre had been incredible from day one. “We can’t thank them enough,”

Camille said. Known for his “wicked sense of humour” and quiet nature, Jarrad has lived in Bentleigh his whole life with extended family in Lynbrook, and was remembered as a loving and loyal person who was devoted to his girlfriend. He was also an “incredible and passionate hockey” player at the Southern United Hockey Club. He took up the sport aged seven and became a role-model to other players and childhood friends. “So many looked up to him and one of the hardest parts for him and our family is knowing that he won’t be able to play again,” Ms Camille said. While Jarrad was nearing the end of his journey, his family set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised $29,430 of a $30,000 target. “We know how expensive funeral expenses can be and had been wondering how we could make it happen for him,” Ms Camille said. “That’s why my cousins suggested a GoFundMe page and organised this for us. The response has been like nothing we ever imagined.” Ms Camille said the “unbelievable generosity” of the community was overwhelming, as well as messages from many friends and family. “They’ve come from far and wide and it’s been reassuring knowing that people are out there supporting our family throughout Jarrad’s journey.” To donate visit https://www.gofundme. com/f/jarrad-camille

Drug and gun-runner caught in elaborate police sting By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hallam ‘middle-man’ who brokered meth and guns, including a home-made sub-machine gun, to two undercover police members has been jailed for at least six years. Rajeev Singh, 29, trafficked more than 588 grams of predominantly ‘ice’ mixtures to the officers ‘Sammy’ and ‘Zac’ over six months in Hallam, Cranbourne North, Berwick, Clyde North and Melbourne. The amount was 103 times beyond a commercial trafficable quantity, County Court of Victoria judge George Georgiou said in sentencing on 17 July. Over the same time, Singh sold the agents what he called “toys” from a network of gun suppliers. The weapons included a sawn-off double-barrel shotgun, another double-barrel shotgun, an assault rifle, a home-made submachine gun for $24,500 and an automatic pistol. At the time, the former Eumemmerring Secondary College student was prohibited from having firearms. He was on bail and two community corrections orders for drug, weapon, driving at dangerous speed and other offences.

On the day Singh received his second CCO in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, he organised to sell further drugs and guns to a police operative. It revealed Singh’s “low” regard for the law and its offers for him to rehabilitate, Judge Georgiou said. The sting came to an end when Singh arranged to sell 500 grams of meth to an operative for $64,000 on 17 April 2018. The sale didn’t occur, his home was raided by police at 3.30am that day. Singh met the first police operative ‘Sammy’ when they shared a cell at Narre Warren police station in October 2017. From the outset, Singh claimed he trafficked a kilogram of ice every 1-2 days and could source rifles and handguns. He offered

to sell $4800 of ice to Sammy. The guns were difficult to obtain but there was “good money” in selling them, he told Sammy. Singh told his ‘customers’ of his suppliers such as ‘Drew’, an ex-Comanchero in Berwick, and another called ‘Yuki’. He was close to these sources, Judge Georgiou found. Singh later blamed the police operatives for pressuring him to escalate the deals - a claim rejected by the judge. The accused was a “willing participant”, “talking up” his ability to supply meth and firearms from the start, Judge Georgiou said. Singh had been careful ensuring the drugs and firearms were in his hands for only a short period of time. On one occasion, a gun was produced from a horse float parked at the front of a Noble Park “safe house”. He insisted on messaging the operatives on an encrypted social app Wickr where he spruiked photos of some of the firearms for sale. During the court hearing, Singh, with a prior history of drug and weapon offences, was being remanded in protective prison. It was his first time in custody. He claimed events in 2016 had escalated

his drug addiction and offending. That year, he had been shot in the abdomen during a drug deal, his arm was broken with a baseball bat by his girlfriend’s expartner, he broke up with his girlfriend and a close friend died in a drug overdose. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress and stimulant abuse disorder, but that didn’t mitigate his offending, the judge said. Singh’s supportive, responsible family, and industrious work history were noted. Judge Georgiou said Singh’s role wasn’t greatly different to Jacob Bentley, a “middle man” who was higher up in the drug supply chain. This year, Bentley was jailed for up to five years in the Victorian County Court for his part in a $37,000 ice deal negotiated between Singh and ‘Zac’. Singh pleaded guilty to several counts of trafficking meth including trafficking a commercial quantity of ice as well as five counts of possessing firearms as a prohibited person. He was jailed for up to nine years and nine months, with a six-year non-parole period. Singh had served 714 days in pre-sentence detention.

$500K for road project By Brendan Rees A proposed new road link at an arterial in Clyde North is set to improve local connectivity to a new school and community centre. At its 21 July meeting, Casey Council administrators approved $500,000 in funding to extend Ferdinand Drive by 90 metres to a new roundabout at Grices Road - allowing more families in Clyde North and the Minta Farm precinct easy access to the new public Grayling Primary School and Manna Gum Family and Community Centre. Under the plans, the funding will also be allocated to building a deceleration lane due to the expected increase in traffic from the east of Grices Road, which will ensure the ongoing safe operation of the existing intersection of Grices Road and Glenrose Boulevard. Council is currently in talks with major developer Stockland that owns a parcel of land bordering Grices Road to the north known as the Minta Estate. According to a council document, Stockland is obligated to construct 600 metres of Grices Road from Glenrose Boulevard to the east as part of their estate access requirements at a cost of $2.9 million - known as the Grices Road East project. Council says the planned Grices Road works will create a new roundabout linking Grices Road to a connector street into Minta Farm to the north and Ferdinand Drive to the south. Under a ‘works-in-kind arrangement’ council says it will pay Stockland for the delivery of this project using developer contribution funds as part of the Clyde North precinct structure plan. The council document revealed Stockland was also prepared to deliver the additional proposed works - being the Ferdinand Drive extension and deceleration lane projects. This partnership, council says, will present

Undaunted by the pandemic, a certifiedorganic produce stall has quickly cultivated a ready following at Dandenong Market. Peninsula Organic Farmgate opened at the market weeks ago, offering fruit and vegetables harvested from owner Tash Fields’ family farm in Baxter on the Mornington Peninsula. Their crops include unusual varieties of heirloom carrots, beetroot and cauliflower as well as a spread of crisp lettuce varieties and Romanesco. The stall also offers locally-grown and Australian-made dairy, eggs, bread and groceries. Ms Fields started the farm in 2009 and opened the business in 2013. She pressed ahead with expansion plans despite Covid-19, knowing that a stall at Dandenong Market would be the “next step”. “Much of what we grow is based on customer feedback,” Ms Fields said. “I love talking to customers and letting them know where their food comes from.” Dandenong Market general manager Jennifer Hibbs said the stall presented an opportunity to reach and serve new customers. “We are pleased to see Peninsula Organic Farmgate offer these new shoppers the most competitive possible prices on the organic foods they love. Those who support our small businesses will likely advocate for locally sourced produce too. There are so many positives in this story.”

Group of deniers slammed By Brendan Rees A group of people have thumbed their noses at authorities by gathering at a Cranbourne gym to purportedly discuss coronavirus theories. Eva Black, who recently filmed herself breaching a police checkpoint and labelled the pandemic as a “SCAMdemic” on social media, was a key speaker at the meeting at The Combat Athlete gym on Sunday 26 July. One attendee, who Star News has chosen not to name, posted a photo of the gathering showing about 50 people sitting shoulder-toshoulder with no apparent effort to practice social distancing or wearing masks, rules that are in force under stage three restrictions. “A great night together discussing the putrid conduct of the police, government and media lies,” he wrote. “We are strong and won’t bow down to these oppressors.” “Eva Black thank you for sharing your experience with us and how the Mainstream Media created a work of fiction. With their slanderous narrative to demonise you, a true libertarian. “God bless the righteous and give them power to prevail.” Black posted a reply message, saying “Thank you for having me there. It was so amazing to be in a room full of people who support and celebrate me during this tough time.” “Much love to all and God Bless,” she wrote. The Facebook page revealed the group meets at 6pm on Saturdays. Others also commented on the attendee’s post praising the group’s actions with one writing “We must stand up we must stick together”. “It was so amazing to be in a room full of people who support and celebrate me during this tough time,” another wrote. The owner of the gym, who did not give his name, said he couldn’t “really comment” when asked about the meeting. “I don’t know and if I did I probably wouldn’t

A group of anti-maskers break social distancing rules during a meeting at a Cranbourne gym. say it to someone I don’t know,” he said. Asked whether the gym had been issued a fine, a Victoria Police spokesman said police would not be “providing comment on individual incidents”. However, Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner of regional operations Rick Nugent said he was alarmed by the behaviour of those who “blatantly” chose to disregard the rules “on the insistence their human rights being breached”. “It seems these people are more interested in notoriety and getting likes on social media than the health and wellbeing of their fellow Victorians,” he said.

At a press conference on Monday 27 July Premier Daniel Andrews took aim at those flouting strict coronavirus rules saying: “Seriously, one more comment about human rights - honestly. It is about human life.” “The thing with conspiracy theorists, the more you engage in an argument with them, the more oxygen you are giving them,” he said. Hugh de Kretser, executive director of the Human Rights Law Centre said the order to wear masks was not a breach of human rights. Casey Council chair of administrators Noelene Duff said it was “extremely disappointing and concerning” to see people breaching

lockdown restrictions “when many of us are working hard to reduce the spread and protect our community”. “To ensure we prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect all community members, residents are advised to only refer to trusted information sources, such as the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) or other Australian Government sources,” Ms Duff said. Victim ‘revenge hit’ with pole: Thug jailed for affray By Brendan Rees A young man who played a role in a “terrifying” revenge bashing of a teenage boy at a Cranbourne North home has been sentenced to 22 months in jail. Dur Bidong, 26, pleaded guilty to affray during a Victorian County Court sitting on 22 July. In her sentencing remarks Judge Carlin Rosemary told Bidong: “Unless you dramatically change your attitude you not only risk squandering the opportunity this country has afforded you - you are destined for a life in and out of prison.” The court heard Bidong was armed with a pole when he and a large group of males stormed a Cranbourne North home just after midnight on 21 December 2017.

Bidong had sought revenge following an alleged assault on his younger brother earlier that night, the court heard. At the house were four teenage girls and two teenage boys as well as a woman, the court was told. The two boys inside heard a whistle just as the group turned up on foot and armed themselves with poles. The court was told one of the males from the group smashed a window while another yelled: “We’re finally here to get you”. The girls inside locked the house and hid while the boys also ran back inside - however one boy was struck on the head with a pole and left on the ground bleeding. The court heard the boy was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries including skull, facial and spinal fractures and bleeding on the brain.

Police arrested Bidong later that day but he denied any involvement in an interview, saying he was at home all night. Police seized some of his clothing and shoes and released him without charge, the court heard. However, nine months later forensic analysts revealed Bidong’s shoes had contained traces of the victim’s blood. The court was told Bidong was arrested again and interviewed but he couldn’t explain why the blood was on his shoes. He was charged on summons but was remanded in custody for other matters on 28 November, 2018. The court was told the arrival of the group at the house had been “co-ordinated”. Judge Rosemary told Bidong: “To be clear I

am not sentencing you for the assault ... but it is relevant to the seriousness of the affray in that it would have increased the level of terror experienced by those present”. The court heard Bidong came to Australia from Egypt in 2011 after his family fled Sudan following a civil war seven years earlier. He was bullied at a young age before dropping out of school in Year 10 and has never been employed. The court heard Bidong had been sentenced 16 times but had completed a certificate in hospitality and general education during his time in custody. Judge Rosemary took into consideration his guilty plea but was not accepting of his remorse. He will be eligible for parole in 12 months.

Lockdown good-health tips By Tania Phillips Exercising, eating well and relaxing are some of the keys to getting through Lockdown in good shape according to food and health guru Luke Hines. With more than 10 years as a personal trainer and a slew of cookbooks under his belt the former My Kitchen Rules finalist and food presenter on Channel seven’s House Of Wellness - it’s a fair bet he’s probably on to something there. Like all of us, life changed for Hinesy when the lockdown first started back in March but he’s determined it isn’t going to knock him out of his healthy habits. “For me it’s been interesting because I normally commute to Melbourne for work on a weekly basis - sometimes twice a week,” the Gold Coast-based personality said. “When lockdown first hit I was thrown for six because I thought - hang on that’s what I do - I travel to Melbourne and I also just travel and so I had to reinvent how I was producing content. I learned very quickly to adapt in that time and to learn to love the spare time. I think we all run around thinking we’re very very busy and we’ve got to run from A to B. “Two things went on for me - first I had to start to learn to be comfortable with extra time and secondly I thought how could I reinvent what I do during this time?” The answer for Luke was going from doing studio stuff to cooking at home and showing viewers how to cook fantastic food in lockdown and then separate to the show I focused on that as well for social channels including Instagram Live, facebook life - using technology that didn’t cost a thing to get my message out there. So what is his message? What are the five things he thinks are important as we all battle, isolation, depression and the need to eat our way through our store cupboards?

Popcorn cauliflower anyone?

Cookbook author, health guru and television personality Luke Hines. “The first thing is the mindset component because if you don’t have the mindset switched on my four other tips won’t really work because if your in a bad headspace you’re not going to want to do any of them,” he explained.

“First and foremost try and implement some form of mindfulness or healthy mindset activity into your life.” He said that could be as simple as meditation in the morning, learning mindfulness or yoga - just simply making sure that you cultivate the positive mindset. Tip two is food, according to Luke now is the best time to concentrate on what we are eating and cooking - as well as being good for you it’s a form of mindfulness, being off your device and in the moment. “For ten years I’ve been hearing - I don’t have the time to cook - there is no longer that excuse,” he laughed. “I am so sick to death of

that excuse. Now Corona has come along I wish I had everyone’s number who has said that over the years - I’d say hi it’s Luke you now have the time.” His third tip is - moving - even if you can no longer go to the gym “There is so much you can do at home, you don’t need equipment, you don’t need anything fancy to stay fit,” Luke said. “You just need an arms distance around you to do body weight and exercises. That will look different for everybody, but it doesn’t matter what age or fitness level - there is something you can do - look online.” Type in at homework out on Youtube and on-line and find something suitable. Tip four is look for something you really enjoy. “We do have spare time - is there a language you’ve wanted to learn that you’ve never had time to do, is there a skill you wanted to get hold of - maybe this is the perfect time!,” he suggested. “My fifth and final one is stay connected. Really try to stay connected with your community - that might be direct family or friends or it also could be colleagues.” He said a lot of people are going to be feeling a sense of loneliness without the normal sense of contact - use this time to connect. “I know it could be hard particularly if you’re not tech-savvy but get your kids or your grandkids to teach you to use devices to zoom, facetime - what ever and that will really fill your cup energetically to keep everything else ticking along.” For more information, recipes, tips and advice head to https://lukehines10.com/.And if you are looking for something healthy and fun to make Luke suggests his Popcorn cauliflower https://lukehines10.com/news/crispy-popcorn-cauliflower-nuggets-1

Looking for something tasty and nutritious to have with all the rice you’ve still got stockpiled from earlier in the year? Then this stir-fry is for you. Combining the tanginess of the hoisin with the earthy mushroom flavour, salty peanuts, the freshness of sugarsnap peas (maybe from your garden?) and the goodness of chicken breast, this is sure to become a family favourite.

After three premierships in four years, Berwick are enjoying their most successful era. 185297 Picture: ROB CAREW

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

- two premierships in two years. Not only is the former Noble Park champion blessed with an incredible squad, but he's a forward thinker, a modern day coach with an incredible tactical nous. The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. Turn to sport for more about a golden day for the Wickers in the final ever grand final of the South East Football Netball League.

FOCUS ON … TAX TIME

CPA backs Jobkeeper’s six-month extension CPA Australia has welcomed last week’s announcement by the Morrison Government to extend and taper the JobKeeper scheme until March 2021. Elinor Kasapidis, CPA Australia’s tax policy adviser said, “The Government’s approach to tapering JobKeeper payments will be well received by many and is what we had suggested to enable affected businesses to adjust in an orderly way”. CPA Australia has highlighted concerns that the ending of JobKeeper in September will have disastrous impacts on many businesses still struggling with the economic fallout from COVID-19. The extension of JobKeeper gives business the space and time to seek professional advice to assist with their recovery and to reimagine their operations for the post-pandemic environment. “It is great to see that the Government has responded to our feedback and ensured that the profession has sufficient notice to understand the changes and advise their business clients appropriately. “The advance notice is welcomed as many businesses will require professional advice to determine the best course of action and what they might need to do to requalify. “The orderly withdrawal of JobKeeper also gives many businesses extra time to reboot and permanently change the way they operate, just as consumers have changed how and when they buy goods and services,” Mr Kasapidis said. He said the accounting profession per-

formed a critical role in the successful implementation of JobKeeper. With over 920,000 organisations and 3.5 million individuals accessing payments, our members and fellow professionals worked tirelessly to facilitate the delivery of the first package. The advance notice and continuation of the payments within the existing framework reflect our recommendation that the profession requires time to understand the rules and advise their clients appropriately. “Businesses have been given an additional window to revitalise their operations with professional advisers playing a key role in determining the best course of action to create jobs, identify efficiencies and restore growth. “Even with this announcement, cash flow will remain tight, meaning many businesses may not seek out advice, jeopardising their future. “Government support for business to engage professional advisers will enable innovation and new practices, allowing businesses to regain their momentum and look to the future. “To encourage small businesses to ask for much-needed help, the Government should provide them with a voucher that they can redeem for professional advice.” “For JobKeeper Mark Two, the government must work with the profession to ensure the changes can be applied quickly and efficiently. “As with the original JobKeeper, it will be tax agents who are key to the success of the extension to JobKeeper,” Mr Kasapidis said.

Free TAFE a dream path A course provided under the State Government’s Free TAFE program has helped a Berwick man inch closer to achieving his career goals. After initially studying to improve his English, Mohsen Salehi commenced his certificate four in Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs at Chisholm in 2019. Keen to support those in who are struggling with their mental health, Mohsen said the course was perfectly suited to his interests and ambitions. “I want to make this world a better place; this course provides me with the chance to do that,” he explained, adding that mental health had always interested him. “When I got to TAFE I had to work out how much it would cost me, then they said they had the free program and I thought it was a good opportunity. I said, ‘why not!’” He said without the free TAFE program, he may have struggled to find the money to pursue his ambition. He’s now looking at pathways into a Diploma of Mental Health or a bachelor’s degree in a similar field, with dreams of being a social worker or psychologist in future. “I’m looking forward to getting a job with adults or youth,” he said. “I could do services for refugees and asylum seekers who speak different languages and face barriers. “I can speak English and Farsi, so I have

- Mohsen Salehi more opportunities to help build Australia.” In June, new data revealed that students had flocked to Chisholm to commence courses under the State Government’s Free TAFE program. The organisation recorded a 196 per cent increase in commencements compared with the same courses at the end of 2018. It’s anticipated that the program could also help as the state recovers from Covid-19 as people seek to retrain or upskill, with Narre Warren South MP Gary Mass commenting at the time: “As we respond and recover from the coronavirus crisis here in Narre Warren South, Free TAFE at Chisholm will provide the next wave of essential workers for our local industry.” Mohsen Salehi is a step closer to his dream career in mental health. Ian Campbell (right) was a long-time fixture at the Cardinia Cricket Club, in addition to other sporting clubs throughout the region. 212059

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

He was a lionhearted Bull By sports editor Russell Bennett Ian ‘Cambo’ Campbell loved with all his heart, and was beloved by so many in return. That love he had for his family, friends, and the sporting clubs he’d called home was legendary, and no doubt it fueled the fire for his fight - right until the very end. Cambo had battled serious health issues for years, and ultimately passed away in hospital on Tuesday last week. He was just 61. Yet even in his final hours, the incredible strength of that famous ticker of his continually shone through. Four times Cambo suffered a cardiac arrest on the Monday, only for him to fight back each time. He fought harder than most could imagine possible, and that’s because he had the spirit of all of those he’d influenced throughout the decades spurring him on. Sporting clubs, and indeed whole communities, revolve around people like Cambo - people who get so much sheer joy - so much life - out of watching others flourish. A Cardinia Cricket Club life member and club legend, Cambo was one who laid the foundation for the Bulls to build from. But, truth be told, players from far beyond the Bullpen were nurtured by him - and not only as cricketers or footballers, but as people. His involvement in the community football landscape at clubs including Beaconsfield (as a player), and later at ROC, Cranbourne and Lang Lang in an off-field capacity is also fondly remembered - particularly how he closely followed the fortunes of his nephew, Luke Rus, and another player close to his heart - one of the best players to ever lace the boots up in the region - Justin Berry. Cambo had a guiding hand in the lives of generations of sportspeople, and many of those now lead other clubs in their own right. He featured prominently at the Bulls’ 50th Anniversary Gala in February last year - named in the club’s all-decade ‘Team of the ‘80s’. A talented all-rounder, he won the club’s bowling award for the 1983/84 season, and played an integral role in the Bulls making 24 STAR NEWS

their way into A Grade with the 1987/88 premiership. Cardinia has remained in the top flight of the WGCA ever since, and Cambo’s role as an influential coach gives a real insight as to why. While he also played in the E Grade premiership-winning sides of 1991/92 and 1998/99 later in his career, his sporting feats went far beyond the cricket field. At one stage, he held an official javelin world record at the age of just 12. But those he guided along their own sporting journeys truly felt his biggest impact. Cambo coached the Cardinia juniors to back-to-back under-16 premierships in 1996/97 and 1997/98, and to this day those players proudly remember him as one of the best coaches and mentors they’ve ever had. His mantra was always one of encouragement, of inclusivity, and - above all else - of having fun. Cambo also served with distinction on the Cardinia Cricket Club committee for years - including a stint as president in the 1990s. But so much of his work was done behind the scenes. He was a trusted selector for the teams named at the Bulls’ gala function last year - including the prestigious team of the club’s first 50 years. And there’s a very good reason why. His love for the Bulls extended to his incredible encyclopedic knowledge. Not only could he remember just about every single game he played in, he would individually tailor handwritten scorecards as prized keepsakes for players who reached milestones with bat or ball. It was his way of making sure they felt special - making sure they were truly appreciated. And boy did they appreciate him in return. Current Cardinia Cricket Club president Luke Turner - a life member and club legend in his own right as a wicket-keeper batsman paid a special tribute to his great mate. “If it wasn’t for Cambo, my life would be completely different - I honestly wouldn’t have had the chance to live the life I’m living right now,” he explained. The pair first met when Turner was playing

his junior cricket at Tooradin and Cambo was coaching the Rythdale juniors, as they were known back then. “It was really when he started coaching those junior interleague sides when I really got to know him,” Turner said. “He’d just want to make you feel comfortable, and spoke to you like you were just one of the boys. I know even at interleague he made it feel like we’d played our whole lives together.” It was a few years later, at the footy at Tooradin, that Cambo convinced Turner to make the move that would change his life. “He was the main reason I came across in the first place,” Turner said. “I knew him and the way he went about things, and I thought if everyone was the same as Cambo at the club, I’d have an incredible time there. “I think about it now, and if he didn’t push me to come across to Cardinia, my life would be completely different.” Turner said Cambo’s sheer love of the game, and its people, is what set him apart. “The love he had for the club was ridiculous - he knew everything that was going on,” he said. “There was this one game where I hadn’t seen him for a few months - he’d moved away but he saw me and asked how many dismissals I had for the day. “I said five, and he just says ‘oh, that takes it to 300 then’.” Cambo knew exactly because, even from afar, he’d keep record. He ultimately even presented Turner and champion spinner Dwayne Doig - now the Bulls’ vice-president - a book outlining all their combined dismissals. It featured everything from the opposing sides, to the batsmen’s names, to the runs they scored, to what round of what season it was. Turner’s partner Kim was also introduced to cricket when Cambo encouraged her to play... in a competition made up almost entirely of boys. “He encouraged her, and just said she had the same opportunity to play as everyone else, that she had every right,” Turner said proudly.

“Everyone was exactly the same at the club, when it came to Cambo. “He treated everyone the same - with respect - and it was just such an easy time with him around.” Doig’s early memories of Cambo were through junior footy at Cranbourne, and when he later made the switch to play his cricket at Cardinia, their paths crossed again. While Doig is known by many as a champion spinner, it was during his footy career that Cambo was a particular influence. “Cambo actually got me the job as senior playing coach at Lang Lang, and he was my chairman of selectors in 2005,” he recalled. “The support he gave me over so many years through both cricket and footy - he’d definitely meant something very special to me.” And Doig knows he’s part of an expansive club, in that regard. “What’s clear through some of the Facebook stories that people have been telling about him is that he made time for anyone he’d always put the effort into people, and that reflects on what people have said about him,” Doig said. “I just remember on the Thursday nights sitting around the selection table at the footy club - the laughs we had that year were something I’ll always remember. “I took it pretty tough once the news (of his passing) came through, because even if it was the smallest thing, he’d make the effort with people. “The way he treated people really rubbed off on me - everyone deserves to be given some time, and to be spoken to respectfully.” Ian Campbell is survived by his wife Karen; his children Lisa, Nicole, Daniel, Ricky, Samantha, and Jamie; and his 17 grandchildren. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions in place, sadly not all of those Cambo influenced will be there to send him off this Friday in Traralgon. But the service to celebrate his life will be live-streamed from 11am. NAB League’s green light By Nick Creely The AFL has announced that the premier under 18 competition in the nation, the NAB League, will get a late August start in a reduced capacity, however the Dandenong Stingrays are not at this stage expected to take the field. Victorian draft prospects in country regions not impacted by the current lockdowns imposed on metropolitan Melbourne will get a chance to strut their stuff in front of AFL recruiters with a return on 22 August locked in, however, despite the Stingrays - who are based out of Shepley Oval in Dandenong - forming part of the Country conference, the club will not feature with the lockdown in place until at least Wednesday, 19 August. It leaves fellow local NAB League club the Gippsland Power, the Bendigo Pioneers, the Murray Bushrangers, the Geelong Falcons, and the Greater Western Victoria Rebels to battle it out as part of the Country conference. While the AFL remains optimistic that the Metro clubs - the Calder Cannons, Eastern Ranges, Northern Knights, Oakleigh Chargers, Sandringham Dragons and Western Jets - can get some sort of season in later in the year, the

league is desperate to get the regions unaffected by the current restrictions back on to the field in a big boost for next year’s draft. The AFL has also announced that regional players undertaking schooling or board in Melbourne will be unable to play for their country-based NAB League side as per advice from the Victorian state government. AFL head of talent and state league competitions Tristan Salter said in a statement that despite the current Covid-19 situation impacting on talent pathway programs in Victoria, the AFL is committed to getting boys and girls back playing in a safe envrionment. “All levels of the game across the country have been impacted by the health pandemic this year,” Salter said. “Throughout this season we have anchored every decision in-line with the advice of the respective government and relevant medical authorities. Our return to play plans and our timings is evidence of that. “The evolving situation across Victoria has meant we have had to make decisions based on geographical locations of players and clubs to ensure we give as many players the oppor-

tunity to play NAB League games this year. “While we would prefer to provide a standard season of NAB League football for girls and boys across the entire state, this outcome ensures an opportunity for many players to continue their journey in the talent pathway.“ Salter also said that they will continue to work hard to ensure those in the Melbourne and Mitchell Shire regions - which includes the Dandenong Stingrays, despite it being a Country side - can get back on the field at some stage this season. “We maintain our commitment to all players that we will continue explore arrangements including return-to-training and competition in consultation with the Victorian State Government for players located in Metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire,“ he said. The NAB League girls season will also recommence on Saturday 5 September, with a further three matches for each side to complete a six-game season after three rounds were able to be squeezed in prior to the season shutdown. At this stage, there has been no announcement as to whether the Dandenong Stingrays’ girls side will be able to compete.

Former Hawk joins WGFNC Senior comps cancelled By Russell Bennett

12455998-SN31-20

The Kilcunda Bass Football Netball Club has been massively boosted by the recruitment of a former AFL premiership-winning hard man who’s signed on to help turn its fortunes around - former Hawthorn and Gold Coast backman, and popular footy media personality Campbell Brown. And now the Panthers are looking forward to the day when they can pounce again. After the sudden departure of Dean Pipicelli, the club at Hade Avenue cast its net far and wide for those it hoped could help propel it back to contention. But, more than that, it aimed to provide a spark for youngsters throughout the region to get involved with the club - and to stay there for the long-term. Brown was the first domino to fall, and has already been actively involved in the search for the Panthers’ next senior coach. He’d previously had a horse race as part of club president and thoroughbred trainer Shea Eden’s stable, and came along as a guest speaker to the club’s season launch in March just before the 2020 campaign was decimated by the Covid-19 pandemic. From there, he was sounded out about the potential of joining the Panthers to impart as much of his footy knowledge as possible. The 36-year-old 205-game firebrand - who was an All-Australian in 2007 and played in the 2006 and 2008 International Rules series - has long-standing commitments with SEN Track and the Seven Network’s football coverage, but when possible will venture down to Hade Avenue to serve as an assistant coach. It’s also hoped he can pull on the boots at stages next year. “Shea got me up earlier this year for the function and I met a couple of the lads that day, and he just mentioned to me that the club was looking for a senior coach and would I help him through that process,” Brown explained. “While I can’t commit to being a senior coach, myself - with my media commitments and the like - I did say I’d be happy to help in finding one, and also to be involved with the club, especially bouncing back post-Covid. “I’m a lover of country footy and I know it’s the heartbeat of a lot of country communities. I put my hand up to do whatever I could

Former Hawthorn premiership-winning defender Campbell Brown has joined Kilcunda Bass under Daryl Cartmel (left) and club president Shea Eden (right). to help, and that evolved into signing on as an assistant coach. “Pending the state of my body and what I’m doing next year, I’ll also lace the boots up for a game or two.” Brown is fully aware that former Demon Cam Pedersen starred for Phillip Island in the West Gippsland competition last season, and he’s also aware that his own former premiership team mate Jarryd Roughead was linked to Inverloch Kongwak before the Covid-19 pandemic struck. He said he’d be sure to make himself available should Roughead play for the Sea Eagles next season against the Panthers. “I’m not planning on playing the whole season - I may not play at all - but I thought I’d be more than happy to head down to the club and take some training sessions and help the juniors out,” Brown said “I know they were really successful as a club a while back but have done it tough for the past few years - they’ve struggled to keep players and win games. “Hopefully we can turn that around and get some players to the club and rejuvenate it a bit. “We need to find a senior coach and we’re in the process of working through that now. “Whatever role they need me to do, I’ll do it.” The Panthers have also re-signed their key 2020 recruit, Nathan Muratore, for the 2021 season, while a former Hawk and GWS Giant has been linked to their head coaching role.

Football Victoria (FV) has officially cancelled all senior competitions in metropolitan Melbourne this season in the wake of a spike in Covid-19 cases. With metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire back into Stage 3 lockdown, FV has announced that all senior metropolitan competitions, including NPL and community leagues will not proceed or resume as fixtured, with alternative competitions and football options over the spring and summer to be discussed, but based on an opt-in basis with clubs. At this stage, Junior NPL competitions are set to resume in modified form, with FV targeting a start date in September, subject to Government restrictions. Community junior competitions will also target a similar return date. “Following the Victorian Government’s decision to reintroduce lockdown restrictions due to the number of active coronavirus (Covid-19) cases, Football Victoria is announcing a series of changes to its competition structures for the remainder of 2020,” an FV statement read. “The decisions made by FV have always been made with the intention of enabling football to be played by as many people as possible. However, despite the best efforts of our amazing clubs and their volunteers, FV staff and every one of the game’s stakeholders, it will be impossible to run complete competitions for every age group and level. “As such, FV has made a series of decisions to establish which competitions can proceed as fixtured, which can be altered and which we have been forced to cancel. These have been incredibly difficult decisions to make in a challenging and complex environment. “On the whole, we are incredibly disappointed that we have not been able to host a complete season for every participant who wishes to play football, however the health and safety of community remains our number one priority.“ FV said that despite a lockdown forcing senior football in metropolitan Melbourne

The NPL season has been cancelled in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. 177940 Picture: GARY SISSONS and Mitchell Shire to be cancelled, they are still committed to seeing sport played in regional Victoria. “In regions that are not facing lockdowns, junior (18 and under) football can continue to be played, and we intend to create a schedule that allows for competition to take place, noting that some of those competitions are fixtured by FV and some are managed by the local association,” FV said. “FV is still working through a vast number of issues related to fixturing, including those pertaining to regional clubs who participate in metropolitan competitions, or where there is significant crossover with clubs who are marginally outside the boundaries of affected regions. “We are also cognisant that there will be players in affected areas who play for clubs outside those zones, and vice versa. Issues of club and player eligibility will be clarified in the coming days. “For those players currently in lockdown zones who want to play later in the year, Football Victoria will operate modified competitions and other football options on an ‘opt-in’ basis, giving as much of our community as possible the opportunity to step onto the pitch. “We anticipate from September, the following competitions structures are projected to be in place.”

Shima Shine set Sandown Park alight last Thursday night with a blistering 28.95 win, becoming the second fastest greyhound ever to grace the circuit. Anticipation throughout the week was high with the run set to be his first on a metropolitan track since the Easter Gift in April. He began like a rocket and set splits of 4.93 (0.03 off the record) and 18.43 (0.07 off the record), which are reserved for the absolute elite. His overall time was officially 28.949 - just a hundredth off Hooked on Scotch’s (28.939) track record set last November. “I’m more surprised about the first split that he set. I expected him to go well and set a fast time somewhere in the low 29s, but that’s amazing,” said Korie Heinrich, handler and daughter of trainer Andrea Dailly. This time last year Shima Shine began his career in a blaze of glory and, in just his seventh start, broke the long standing 450m track record at Ballarat. For the early part of 2020 he battled

setbacks, however returned to form in late May and has since won six of his past seven outings, including recording another track record at Bendigo in a heat of the Cup. Shima Shine is bred and owned by great friends David Gleeson and Bob Cummings. Gleeson was understandably over the moon with the performance. “The run was that good it’s hard to explain!“ Gleeson explained. “He’s had a lot of setbacks since he was crunched in the Topgun last November. It’s taken some time to get him right but this is what he can do when sound. “Bob and I have bred this line for a long time. We’ve been successful but this is the most outstanding greyhound we’ve had.” It’s expected Shima Shine will head towards the Victorian Sprint heats, which will be held at Sandown Park on Thursday, 6 August. Shima Shine’s first split was the seventh-fastest ever recorded and his second split the fifth fastest. Fernando Bale and Black Magic Opal hold the first split record at 4.90, with Fernando also holding the second split record at 18.36.

Exciting basketball product, and Berwick local, Mason Peatling has signed a three-year deal with Melbourne United. He will join the team as a development player, before being upgraded to a rostered position for the following two seasons. The 23-year-old, 203-centimetre forward will be looking to make a name for himself, and told the Melbourne United website of his delight at securing a contract in the NBL. “I am over the moon to be signing with Melbourne United,“ he said. “The club has been in championship contention each of the past few seasons and it is exciting to join a group that will be doing everything to experience more team success. “I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can from all the players, but Chris (Goulding) and (David) Barlow especially. They’re not only NBL Champions but Olympians and have a wealth of knowledge that I’m really excited to grow around. “The United culture is something that has me really excited. I’m looking forward to working with our coaches and teammates, and hopefully I’ll have some small things to con-

tribute along the way.” The south-east product enjoyed a strong junior career at the Dandenong Rangers, and represented Victoria multiple times at the Australian Junior Basketball Championships, before being recruited Eastern Washington Eagles in 2015, where in his most recent season he proved how valuable he is - leading the side to the Big Sky Conference Championship. With another strong addition to the roster, Melbourne United head coach Dean Vickerman said now is an exciting time for the club and its fans. “The energy we will get from these young and very talented players joining our club will be exciting, and Mason will really add to that,“ he told the club website. “The fact that these young, talented and highly recruited guys have chosen to join our club for long periods of time really speaks volumes to the culture we have built here at Melbourne United. “Mason is a very intelligent and emerging young player with incredibly high potential. I think our fans will be excited about the player he shall become.” berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
