SPECIAL REPORT, PAGES 4-6
MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Significant public money needs to be spent on equipment upgrades at the region’s three major dams - Leslie, Connolly and Storm King (see cover story, pages 4-6). Leaving aside Storm King Dam which is currently ‘offline’ - while there is no suggestion any kind of major structural or water supply failure is imminent for Leslie and Connolly Dams, it is clear that at least in the case of Connolly Dam the Southern Downs Regional Council has known about equipment issues since 2014, yet little work has been done to date. At Leslie Dam, well over half a million dollars is due to be spent this financial year by the council to install new pumps to draw and transfer urban water for Warwick, Yangan and Allora. Temporary pumps are currently costing more than $4000 a month. While debate and discussion about long-term water security for our region rightly continues, the maintenance and upgrading of the water infrastructure we already have is both vital, and costly. With water meter readings currently being taken across the region residents are in my view entitled to see the detail on where and how water revenue is being spent. Jeremy Sollars

BORDER CHANGES TO AID FARMERS BY TANIA PHILLIPS & JEREMY SOLLARS The mayors of both Goondiwindi and the Southern Downs have welcomed changes to the “border bubble aimed at easing pressure on Queensland and NSW farmers and agribusiness operators. The new Covid-19 agriculture and agribusiness exemptions are set to be rolled out progressively during the next week after coming into effect at the weekend. Goondiwindi Regional Council mayor Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said the exemptions applied to farmers, their workers and agribusiness operators in both states who had not been able to service their cross-border operations due to current Covid restrictions. However, he said the exemptions were not available to seasonal workers. According to Cr Springborg the exemptions would only allow a farmer, their employees, contractors or an agribusiness operator to go straight to the work site, isolate there and not attend other places out the farm. He said Council had been working with Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young to achieve this outcome and are very grateful for this additional exemption that will make a significant difference for our region. The changes come as the border bubble expands to include Urbenville on the NSW side and several Southern Down Villages - a move welcomed by Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi who also praised the efforts of Dr Young. Cr Vic Pennisi said he has found Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young “fantastic to deal with and “very receptive to requests by the council to expand the ‘Border Bubble’ in the past fortnight. Cr Pennisi said as a result of the Southern Downs Regional Council’s advocacy Leyburn, Allora and Yangan are now in the ‘Bubble’, after local businesses in those areas expressed concern about cross-border movement restrictions affecting employees. The mayor has also urged residents and businesses, who may be confused about the complex border restrictions to call, the council for clarification and assistance. “We understand there is a lot of information out there and some of it is misinformation, Cr Pennisi told the Free Times this week.
“What we’re trying to do in council is to be a one-stop shop for information - people should feel free to call us if they need help understanding the border arrangements. “We’re particularly aware of people in agriculture, farmers needing access across the border to get to their livestock for example, if they have property on the other side of the border. “That’s a real concern and I also know the police who are on duty on the borders are working with people and are doing a tremendous job with a lot of compassion. To gain the exemption a farmer will need to present proof of property ownership, or a lease or agistment agreement. A contractor will need to provide proof of contract and similarly, a worker will need to provide proof of employment that includes the purpose of travel. Under the new farm exemptions once a farmer or farm employee has exemption they must carry proof of identity with them at all times. Applicants must also have a copy of the Queensland Chief Health Officers exemption letter, available on the Goondiwindi Council Website. The exemptions will stay current until 22 September, 2020 unless revoked by Queensland’s Chief Health Officer and Cr Springborg said the applicant must be able to ensure they have not been overseas,
a Covid hotspot or in the presence of someone who was Covid-19 active. He said the exemption must be applied for at the border checkpoint, before exiting or entering Queensland or at Queensland border police stations during business hours with plans to make the exemptions available online in the near future. For further information the Southern Downs Regional Council can be contacted on 1300 697 372 - the councilâ₏™s website also has numerous COVID-19 information links including border restrictions - www. sdrc. qld.gov.au
“COMMON SENSE Federal Agriculture Minister and Maranoa MP David Littleproud said the exemptions were “a first step template for the other states to work from to ensure agriculture supply lines remain open. “This is a common sense outcome that shows the voice of regional Queensland was finally heard in Brisbane, he said. “I called on the Chief Medical Officers in each state to listen to local leaders and finally they’ve done it. “My message to other states is there is no need to wait. “Our time critical agricultural supply chains, regional economies and livelihoods depend on urgent resolution of these border issues.
“A FAIR GO Tenterfield businesses deserve a fair go according for State Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin. Ms Saffin and her Labor colleagues have demanded help for businesses near the Queensland and South Australia after the NSW Government announced a $45 million program to help “cushion the economic impacts of the border closure with Victoria. The package was announced by Deputy Premier John Barilaro earlier this week. Ms Saffin, who’s electorate stretches along the NSW-Qld border from Murwillumbah to Tenterfield, has asked for a similar program to help businesses affected by the Queensland border closure. “Businesses on the North Coast and Northern Tablelands are struggling, Ms Saffin said; “First drought. Then bushfires and now border restrictions. The NSW Government must intervene to help them survive.

DAMS STATUS... The current council has budgeted more than $1.3 million in the 2020-2021 financial year for structural work and equipment replacement at the region’s dams, along with design options for a new spillway at Connolly Dam (above). A
s winter draws to a close the region's dams have seen small inflows in recent months but water restrictions appear set to remain our own kind of 'new normal' when it comes to water. Reasonable falls in August even produced a small rise in the level of Stanthorpe's Storm King Dam, but not enough to pause the carting by road tanker of water for Stanthorpe from Connolly Dam in Warwick. Heavier rainfall back in February of this year alleviated some of the immediate pressure on the region's water supplies and collectively dams on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt have close to 30 months of town water supply all up for Warwick, Stanthorpe, Yangan and Allora. Combined with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a 70 per cent chance of a 'La Nina' for Australia this spring - which at least theoretically can mean the chance of above-average spring rainfall for eastern Australia - the short-term outlook for urban water supplies is certainly much better than it was this time in 2019. But water restrictions of 120 litres per person per day remain and the Southern Downs Regional Council has given no indication these will be relaxed anytime soon, and the question of long-term water
security for our region remains. The council and the State Government have been meeting behind closed doors about a new water pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick - councillors have been briefed on at least two occasions by state officials in recent months - but details about the cost and timing of the project are yet to be publicly released. The pipeline - which if built would allow Warwick and Stanthorpe to access water from Brisbane's Wivenhoe Dam via Toowoomba - was announced by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk way back in January of this year. Since then COVID-19 has effectively - and justifiably or not - put such major projects on hold, but at no time has the Premier stated publicly the ToowoombaWarwick pipeline is off the table. The next state election is due on Saturday 31 October and while the Southern Downs and Granite Belt are not 'swing' areas that Ms Palaszczuk's ALP government is likely to target, a promise is a promise. Even a political one. In the meantime the Southern Downs Regional Council has budgeted for a range of upgrades and repairs to dams within our region during this 2020-2021 financial year, and is continuing to explore underground or bore water options for future 'emergency' town water supplies. And while Leslie, Connolly and Storm King Dams are far from full things could be - as indeed they have been - a lot worse.

385ML in storage but did receive a minor inflow from rain a fortnight or so ago, boosting it by 1.2 per cent, which anyone would agree is better than nothing. The council says if water was currently being drawn from Storm King Dam for Stanthorpe the dam would reach its 'minimum operating level' in just three months. The council has also said the dam would need at least six months' worth of storage before it would consider bringing it back online for Stanthorpe. In the meantime the road carting regime - which is costing the State Government $800,000 a month - will continue, and Premier Palaszczuk has not put an 'end date' on that arrangement, having previously made it clear she will "not allow any community in Queensland to run out of water".
As of this week Leslie Dam was at just over 13 per cent of full capacity, with around 13,200 megalitres (ML) in storage. According to council calculations that means there's enough water to supply Warwick, Yangan and Allora for about 28 months based on current usage and restrictions. The council's Leslie Dam figures are based on the 'official' Sunwater level - the state agency is the owner and operator of the dam - and include around 2000 ML below the 'dead storage level', or the level below the intake point in the dam wall, and below which temporary pumping equipment would be needed to extract water from the dam. It's also important to bear in mind that Leslie Dam is primarily an irrigation dam - commercial agricultural water users both in our region and those neighbouring have rights to water above 15,000ML, not something that's happening at present. Connolly Dam - normally Warwick's 'back-up' supply - is currently set aside to supply water for Stanthorpe and as of this week was at just over 86 per cent of full capacity with 1880ML in storage, enough the council says to keep Stanthorpe supplied for the next 24 months. Water for Stanthorpe is being carted to holding tanks at Storm King Dam by road tankers through contract arrangements with the council. Storm King Dam itself will remain 'offline' indefinitely. It's currently at just under 18 per cent of capacity with about
WORK NEEDED... A range of budget funding has been set aside by the Southern Downs Regional Council for dam-related upgrades and future planning in the 2020-2021 financial year. Here's a rundown ... Since late 2019 this has been done with temporary hired pumping equipment, with the permanent pumps at Leslie Dam requiring an upgrade - and one of the three pumps is currently rated as "failed". The council has budgeted $550,000 in its current budget to replace the Leslie Dam pumps, with a spokeswoman telling the Free Times the pumps "are expected to be replaced by June 2021". "This project will involve a complete overhaul of the pump station and includes replacing the pumps and pipework and upgrading the control system for the pumps," the spokeswoman said. "Council is currently hiring an interim standby pump for $4200 per month until the new pumps are able to be designed and installed." Sunwater itself remains tight-lipped about safety improvements it potentially needs to make at Leslie Dam, based on regular reviews of the dam's stability. For around the last 18 months Sunwater has been compiling a 'business case' on potential 'structural improvements' for Leslie Dam and the Free Times has asked on numerous occasions for specific details, but to date none have been forthcoming. The cost of any structural works at Leslie Dam would be borne in part by the agricultural users who take water from the dam, and older documents on Sunwater's website suggest the dollar figure could be in the range of $23 million. But last week a Sunwater spokesman told the Free Times the agency is confident any safety risks associated with the wall at Leslie Dam are "below the limit of tolerability", with the worst-case scenario being a collapse of the dam wall. Nonetheless the Free Times has submitted a 'Right To Information' (RTI) request on Leslie Dam seeking to obtain more recent documents relating to its stability - we'll keep readers updated on how that's progressing. Here's the Sunwater statement from last week, attributed to a spokesman "As a responsible dam owner, Sunwater must ensure our assets are maintained to a high standard to protect the safety of nearby communities," the Sunwater spokesman said. "All our dams have monitoring systems and processes in place which involve 20-year dam safety reviews, five-year comprehensive risk assessments and annual inspections. "Sunwater is currently undertaking a business case to review the need and assess best options for improvement works at Leslie Dam. "This is part of our broader Dam Improvement Program that ensures dams Taxation, financial advice and auditing for individuals, small business, primary producers and clubs.
function safely, hold and pass excess volumes of water during extreme weather events, and provide long-term, reliable water supply. "This program considers the age of infrastructure, wear and tear, assessment against current dam design standards and guidelines. "Additionally, it examines the latest hydrology and rainfall patterns and community expectations for risk reduction. "Since 2016, Sunwater has completed a number of reports examining the condition of Leslie Dam. "These include hydrology and dam safety reviews, as well as comprehensive risk, failure impact and stability assessments. "Early investigations and reports indicate that the safety risk at the dam is potentially below the limit of tolerability, as established by the Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD). "As a result, Sunwater may not be required to carry out major improvement works to address the safety at the dam. "However, Sunwater is still to undertake and complete several additional studies and engineering assessments, which has extended the timeframe for the project. "Finalisation of these reports will determine if any improvement work is required at Leslie Dam. "Project completion is forecast by the end of 2021, weather permitting." CONNOLLY DAM Connolly Dam - located just south of Warwick at Silverwood - is the 'old man' of the region's dam network, dating back to 1927. And the dam's equipment - including valves, gates and pipes and the 'intake tower' which sits a little way out from the dam wall - is showing its age. Many of the components are heavily corroded and consultants have described the dam's "control equipment" as "antiquated". Divers contracted by the council in January 2019 - from specialist firm
Commercial Marine Group - discovered faults in the pipeline which runs from the intake tower to the shore through a 'conduit tunnel' but it is understood no major leaks or water loss have resulted to date. The pipeline runs through to the main pipeline connecting Connolly Dam to the Glen Road water treatment plant and about halfway along - to the standpipes just off the New England Highway used by the water carters. The current council has budgeted nearly $290,000 for work on Connolly Dam in its 2020-2021 budget, but much of the work needed at Connolly was first recommended to the council as far back as 2014. Complicating matters is the daily need to draw water from the dam for Stanthorpe and the council's water management staff are currently drawing up a design for a "temporary bypass pumping system" to allow repairs to be undertaken. That design is expected to be finalised by the end of October. But the council is also saying the results of a 2014 inspection of Connolly Dam by Sunwater are being "reviewed" and is yet to make public what repairs are needed as a priority in 2021-2021. Previous estimates have put the costings for the equipment repair work needed at Connolly Dam as high as $3 million. A council spokeswoman said "Sunwater's Dam Safety Inspection report of Connolly Dam in 2014 recommended the revision of the Emergency Action Plan (EAP), staff training, spillway monitoring and repairs, operator safety improvements and inspection and assessment of the outlet tunnel and intake tower". "The EAP has since been revised and is due for review again in September this year (2020)," the spokeswoman said. "A Failure Impact Assessment study was also completed and investigations are being made for spillway reinstatement upgrades.

Leslie Dam is currently at just over 13 per cent of capacity.
"The 2014 report's recommendations were made at a time when Connolly Dam was not used to supply water to Stanthorpe. "As Connolly Dam currently supplies water to Stanthorpe, a bypass pump station would be required during any remediation works. "The $287, 525 allocated in the 2020/21 Annual Budget is for design and installation of temporary bypass pump station to take the intake tower and pipework in the tunnel offline during repair work. "Design of bypass pumping arrangement is currently underway. "Council has also applied for grant funding to install cameras to monitor dam water level, spillway and embankment during high rainfall events." The Free Times asked the council about the current condition of the pipework from the intake tower and in the conduit tunnel, with the spokeswoman saying the "condition assessment inspection carried out in December 2018 (by Commercial Water Group) made several recommendations for intake tower and pipework remediation work at Connolly Dam". "While pipework is functional, repair and maintenance is required to improve operational reliability and safety," the spokeswoman said. "Any work on the pipe and tower will also require temporary bypass arrangements to continue the supply of water from Connolly Dam to Stanthorpe." Also on the project list for 2020-2021 is $121,984 for an "options analysis" for the concrete spillway at Connolly Dam. Unlike larger dams - such as Leslie - the Connolly spillway is not controlled by gates and if the dam is full the water simply 'tops' the spillway and runs into Rosenthal Creek. The spillway at Connolly Dam is currently leaking but not significantly. The council has not yet indicated what the possible future "options" might be for the spillway. Council documents detailing the potential repairs at Connolly Dam state that while "corrosion rates" of the "intake tower gate valves" - which draw water from the dam and are nearly 90 years of age - "do not appear to be aggressive, the operational and functional integrity of all these valves must be considered very uncertain and in the high risk category for partial or catastrophic failure". STORM KING DAM The council has budgeted $420,000 for "remediation work" at Stanthorpe's Storm King Dam in 2020-2021, following on from de-silting of the dam earlier in 2020 at a cost of $230,000. COVER STORY The council says the current financial year works for Storm King Dam will include: · Safety and operational improvements including the installation of safe and secure access to the platform · Operational testing of all valves · Replacement of the dam scour valve (the scour valve is part of the outlet system which also acts to flush out sediment) · Installation of automatic level recorder and connection to Council's telemetry system (currently the council uses Bureau of Meteorology data on dam levels for both Storm King and Connolly Dams). ●
EMU SWAMP DAM Planning for construction of Emu Swamp Dam at Stanthorpe is continuing, with construction tenders having originally been forecast to be issued in July but now expected "in the near future", according to Granite Belt Irrigation Project (GBIP) chairman Dan Hunt in an update in the Free Times in early August. "The recent appointment of national engineering consultancy Premise places us in a strong position to obtain the necessary government permits and approvals to prepare tenders for construction for the dam and the pipeline in the near future," Mr Hunt said in the update. "GBIP has also appointed specialist land acquisition and compensation advisory company, Minsol Group, to investigate the pipeline corridor.
‘HIGH WATER USERS’ The council this week said that over the last 12 months “local businesses identified as ‘High Water Users’ have buckled down to reduce water consumption and together have saved a staggering 76 megalitres”. Portfolio Councillor for Water Stephen Tancred said “based on June 2020 monthly water usage, this significant saving could supply water
"Minsol Group has begun talking to around 51 landholders and agribusiness customers about access, or acquiring land along the 117km pipeline route. "In a series of stages over coming weeks, landholders can expect a letter from the Minsol Group, asking for a meeting to discuss the route, to help lead us to accurately cost the project and to obtain necessary approvals to kick-start construction. "GBIP is, in part, funded by $23.4 million from local irrigators, the highest proportion of private investment in water infrastructure in Queensland's history, and we believe this is testament to the value this Project will bring to water security, production and prosperity to the communities, farmers and other businesses of the Granite Belt." ●
to Allora for 15 months or Yangan for three years”. “Practical applications generate real results,” Cr Tancred said. “The combined average daily water consumption by the high water usage businesses has reduced by 15% per day in a one year period – a commendable water saving considering no business was deliberately wasting water in the
WATER METER ACCESS... The council says water meter readings began on Monday of this week and will be carried out “until the end of September”. A spokeswoman said it is “important for all householders to ensure that their water meters are easily and safely accessible”. “A simple check that the area surrounding water meters is free from garden vegetation and other obstacles will ensure minimal disruption to gardens and assist with an accurate meter reading,” the spokeswoman said. “As ratepayers are responsible for water infrastructure located on their property’s side of the water meter, including leaks in pipes or fixtures, Council encourages residents to regularly check water usage by monitoring the water meter.
previous 12 months. “The combined water savings total more than 76 mega litres. “Having a Water Efficiency Management Plan really does make a difference to a business’s bottom line water consumption. “Businesses using more than 10 megalitres per annum are required to have such a plan and we currently have 11 in place across the region.” ●
“From this financial year, Water Notices will only include water consumption charges. “Water Notices are scheduled to be issued in October 2020 with the due date 30 days after the date of issue. “Water Notices will be issued in a simpler format but the relevant information will still be detailed. “Anyone who is having difficulties paying their notice should contact Council prior to the due date to organise a confidential payment agreement. “For further information contact Council on 1300 697 372 or visit Council’s website at www.sdrc.qld. gov.au” ●

COUNCIL CONSULTATION EXPECTED BY JEREMY SOLLARS Local political representatives are taking a cautiously supportive position on a proposal to build the largest wind farm to date in Australia on land bordering the Southern Downs and Goondiwindi Regional Council areas. As previously reported Spanish global energy company Acciona plans to construct the ‘MacIntyre Wind Farm’ with 180 turbines, each of which would be 285 metres in height, across 36,000 hectares of private land the company has leased in the Cement Mills and Goldfields districts and to the south of Karara. Acciona is yet to submit a development application to the Queensland Government but is expected to do so by the end of September. Wind farms in Queensland do not require council approval. State MP for Southern Downs James Lister has told the Free Times he has not yet received any representations against the wind farm proposal from residents of his electorate, which covers the Southern Downs and Goondiwindi councils. Mr Lister said the land in question is not prime agricultural land - contrasting it with the ‘black soil’ country on which the
controversial Warwick Solar Farm is located at Sladevale - and that farming activities such as sheep grazing can be carried out in compatibility with wind farms. Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi is due to meet with Acciona representatives within the next fortnight but has told the Free Times the ‘traprock’ country to the west of Warwick and Stanthorpe is the most suitable land type for wind farm developments in our region. But he also said he expects Acciona to closely consult with the Southern Downs Regional Council on aspects of the development’s construction phase such as

Goondiwindi Mayor Lawrence Springborg has previously said the State Government must carefully examine renewable energy proposals on their “individual merits”, but that he likewise expects his council to be consulted on any issues affecting local government interests. For its part Acciona has opened “nominations for appointment of community members to a ‘Community Engagement Committee (CEC)’” it is forming for the MacIntyre Wind Farm project. In a statement the company said its policy is to develop “a sustainable business model based on generating shared value and trust with a long-term commitment to its stakeholders”. “Continuous communication and dialogue serve as the foundation for ACCIONA’s relationship with our stakeholders, and one such way we look to promote ongoing communication is through the establishment of project Community Engagement Committees,” the statement said. “The MacIntyre CEC will provide a forum for open dialogue between the company and representatives of the local

RURAL LINKS Livestock agent ROSS ELLIS of McDougall & Sons will provide a fortnightly summary of local livestock sales in our Rural Links pages keep an eye out for his updates ongoing ...
MARKETS SUMMARY The past two weeks has seen a lower supply of Livestock to the weekly sales. This can be attributed to a few things: 1. Drought forced growers to destock 2. Rain has seen some welcome winter crops 3. Growers desperately trying to restock and stabilise numbers 4. Covid-19 and its effect on the buying fraternity The markets for all the above scenarios have seen the cattle market go from strength top strength as growers push the wholesalers and feed lotters to try and restock. Good light conditioned and young breeders are very sought after, vealer steers selling to $5.00/kg, vealer heifers to $4.15/ kg. Whilst the exporters may be quieter the wholesalers and feed-on buyers are keeping the market up. On the sheep and lamb side the story is much the same as growers scramble to provide numbers to the sales. Th high end lambs (weight wise) are suffering as the export slows with processing and shipping problems. A higher number of new season lambs on southern markets going to wholesalers and butchers rather than being kept for export weights later in the year has led the market steadying. Lambs in the 18kg to 23kg dwt are still performing well for the producers up to $190. Ewe Lambs are particularly strong to

There may not be a vaccine yet for COVID-19 but there is one for another serious “zoonotic’’ disease - Q Fever. contracted by those working with livestock on property or in abattoirs, with times of drought considered particularly dangerous,” Mr Mahar said. “There is no more important priority for agriculture than protecting the health and wellbeing of our people. “Q Fever is an all-too-common illness affecting farmers and others employed in rural and livestock-focussed industries, impacting people, in some cases, for many years.” Mr Coulton said the Government is keen to reduce the impact of Q fever and has been subsidising supply of the existing vaccine for many years. “I’m excited by the potential of this new

A new and improved Q Fever vaccine is progressing to pre-clinical trials following a $1.87 million injection from the Australian Government earlier this month. Federal Regional Health Minister Mark Coulton has labelled Q fever a major issue for regional Australians. “Q fever is a disease that affects families across the country,” he said. “I know people who have suffered the ill-effects, which vary in intensity from one person to the next, and know how important it is to ensure Australians have access to the best medical products possible. “That is why the Government is acting to provide more support and more options for most at-risk Australians.” The bacteria that causes Q Fever is spread from animals, mainly cattle, sheep and goats, but can travel up to 30 kilometres in dry, windy conditions and infect people who have had no contact with animals. National Farmers Federation CEO Tony Mahar said the trial made possible by the funding is a significant step towards a more efficient and easier-to-access Q Fever vaccine. “The disease is most commonly

generation vaccine, being developed by an Australian research partnership. It could be a breakthrough for not only Australian farmers and meatworkers, but rural communities around the world,” he said. “One of the potential advantages of the new vaccine is that, unlike the existing vaccine, you don’t need a test before you have it. “This will eliminate extra costs and time in getting vaccinated, which discourages people from getting the protection they need, even though they may be at high risk of exposure. “This development is exciting and compliments the Government’s investment in the existing Q-Vax vaccine, which so many rural Australians, including me, currently rely on.” Funding is provided to DMTC, which leads a national Medical Countermeasures Initiative with support from a range of Australian government agencies including the Departments of Defence and Health. DMTC will work with research and industry partners to manage the staged development of a new Q fever vaccine, including the Australian Rickettsial Reference Laboratory, a WHO collaborative laboratory in Geelong, Victoria. Dr Stephen Graves leads the research team. The study will investigate the doseeffectiveness of the novel vaccine compared to the current vaccine, Q-Vax, as a prelude to clinical trials on people.

AGFORCE CALL ...

AgForce is calling on the State Government to invest in and improve access to the vaccine for Q fever. Approximately one-third of people
12455908-JW31-20
who develop Q fever end up in hospital with complications such as Hepatitis, pneumonia, meningitis, and inflammation of the heart. Around 20 per cent of people with acute Q fever develop prolonged fatigue, which can be severe enough to prevent them working for the rest of their lives. Chair of AgForce’s Work Health and Safety Policy Committee Jacqui Cannon said “it’s important to highlight this disease affecting the lives of the dedicated farming families and their employees who have kept the supermarket shelves stocked for the rest of the state and the country during the COVID-19 pandemic”. “A vaccine for Q fever does exist. But the cost is so prohibitive, the current testing regime such a drain on these busy people’s lives, the numbers of doctor’s registered to administer the vaccine so low, that many avoid it,” Ms Cannon said. “Previously, the Federal Government ran a National Q fever Management Program, but that now holds the unenviable reputation of being the only governmentfunded vaccination program ever defunded in Australia. “That’s why we need the Queensland Government to follow the lead of New South Wales, which has provided funding for Q fever awareness, including online learning for GPs, and research into a new vaccine that doesn’t require multiple doctor visits.” Ms Cannon said Q fever wasn’t just an issue for those living in regional and rural Queensland, but for visitors from the city who are generally unaware of the risks. “Q fever doesn’t only affect farm animals. Kangaroos, camels, dogs and cats, can also cause infection. All you need to do is inhale the dust from where an infected animal may have been sleeping,” she said. “But because those in the bush are most at risk, it’s hard not to see the lack of government intervention on this issue as another example of regional Queenslanders being left behind those in the city. “That’s why we’re imploring the State Government to stand with regional Queensland, stand with farming families and their workers, and increase the funding for and awareness of Q fever for the health and safety of all Queenslanders.” Continued page 11

RURAL LINKS SEE YOUR DOCTOR... Dr Lynton Hudson from the Condamine Medical Centre in Warwick says the practice has been running Q Fever clinics for many years and while many locals working in livestock and related industries are vaccinated it’s always worthwhile raising awareness. Q Fever can be treated with antibiotics but like anything prevention is a far better course of action.
Many employers will pay for Q Fever vaccines while for others the vaccine is relatively inexpensive - at around $300 a jab it’s a sound investment when you consider the potential longterm effects of Q Fever. Due to the high workers’ compensation costs associated with Q Fever many ag employers won’t take on people who aren’t vaccinated. “It (Q Fever) is the most common ‘zoonosis’ or animal-borne disease
that we see in rural communities,” Dr Hudson told the Free Times. “There’s a wide spectrum of presentations but the classic symptom is an awful, overall headache. “The headache can have you laid out in bed for days. “It can present a little like the flu in terms of body-aches and fatigue and a fever, but without the respiratory symptoms - the coughing and sore throat associated with the flu.
“The long-term complications which we do see from time to time can be things like heart valve issues or even meningitis, but the fatigue can also be quite long-term. “The highest risk in my experience seems to be people helping animals giving birth. “But the spores can live in the dust for up to two years so the risk is pretty widespread across animal industries.” ●
ABOUT Q FEVER ...
Team 1 from Year 7A at The Scots PGC College in Warwick took out a Highly Commended award in the annual Hermitage Schools Plant Science Competition.
PLANT SCIENCE WINNERS Queensland school students have won a host of major awards in a national science competition to celebrate the International Year of Plant Health. Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Competition Coordinator Kerrie Rubie congratulated students from nine Queensland schools who won prizes in the Queensland Government’s annual Hermitage Schools Plant Science Competition. More than 1800 Prep to Year 12 students from 100 schools across Australia took up the challenge to uncover why plant health is the key to the survival of life on Earth. “The high quality of science and art entries in this year’s competition shows that the future of science and agriculture is in good hands,” Ms Rubie said. “The students showed great interest learning about the importance of plant health in an agricultural setting. “I commend Queensland students who shone in the 24th annual competition which promotes careers in science and agriculture.” As part of the competition, students had to research three constraints to the plant health of a field crop in a developing country, with plant and ocean health the focus of the Art in Agriculture section. Students from across the globe took part in a fun, citizen science adventure to open
their eyes about the environment and the animals and organisms that invade plants. The 2020 ‘Pest Invaders’ BioQuest attracted 20 teams with 3,850 sightings, 3,413 identifications and 694 species mapped, via a mobile gaming app. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries thanked the competition’s supporters including major sponsors the Plant Biosecurity Science Foundation, Grains Research and Development Corporation, QuestaGame and associate sponsor the University of Queensland, the Paul Johnston Memorial Trust and The Crawford Fund. The following Queensland schools won major science and art prizes: · Glasshouse Christian College, Sunshine Coast · Centenary Heights State High School, Toowoomba · Groves Christian College of Distance Education, Toowoomba · Faith Christian School of Distance Education · Bowen State High School · The Scots PGC College, Warwick · Kurwongbah State School · St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Brisbane · Gilhooly Homeschool, Brisbane ●
Many infected people have no or few symptoms. People who do become sick often have a severe flu-like illness. Symptoms begin about 2-3 weeks after coming into contact with the bacteria and typically include: · high fevers and chills · severe ‘drenching’ sweats · severe headaches, often behind the eyes · muscle and joint pains · extreme fatigue (tiredness). Patients may also develop hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) or pneumonia (infection of the lungs). Without treatment, symptoms can last from 2-6 weeks. Illness often results in time off work, lasting from a few days to several weeks. Most people make a full recovery and become immune to repeat infections. Occasionally, people develop chronic infections up to 2 years later which can cause a range of health issues including heart problems (endocarditis). This is more common for pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems or previous heart problems. About 10% of patients who are sick with acute Q fever go on to suffer from a chronicfatigue-like illness which can be very debilitating for years. HOW IS Q FEVER SPREAD? You can get infected with Q fever by breathing in the bacteria that is in the air or dust · while birthing, slaughtering or butchering infected animals (especially cattle, sheep or goats). These activities carry a very high risk of infection. · when handling infected animals, infected animal tissues, fluids or excretions or animal products or
materials that have been infected including wool, hides, straw, manure fertiliser and clothes (e.g. washing clothes worn when birthing, butchering or slaughtering animals) · while herding, shearing or transporting animals · while mowing grass contaminated by infected animal excretions · when visiting, living or working in/ near a high-risk industry · direct contact with infected animal tissue or fluids on broken skin (e.g. cuts or needlestick injuries when working with infected animals) · drinking unpasteurised milk from infected cows, sheep and goats. WHO IS AT RISK? Workers in the following occupations are at high risk of Q fever: · abattoir and meat workers · livestock and dairy farmers and farm workers · shearers, wool classers/sorters, pelt and hide processors · stockyard/feedlot workers and transporters of animals, animal products and waste · veterinarians, veterinary nurses/ assistants/students and others working with veterinary specimens · wildlife workers working with highrisk animals (including Australian native wildlife) · agriculture college staff and students (working with high-risk animals) · laboratory workers (working with the bacteria or with high-risk veterinary specimens) · animal shooters/hunters · dog/cat breeders, and anyone regularly exposed to animals who are due to give birth · people whose work involves regular mowing in areas frequented by livestock or wild animals ●

FOCUS ON … Health Centre 20th Birthday
A VERY HEALTHY PARTNERSHIP... A lemon tree planted today will give back for many years - which is why they were chosen to mark twenty years of collaboration between health professionals at the Friendly Society Health Centre. Representatives of the Warwick Friendly Society, Condamine Medical Centre (CMC) and Warwick Physioworks worked together tree planting this past week to commemorate the official opening of the centre 20 years ago on 19 August 2000. “The Friendly Society Health Centre is such an integral part of our community, it’s difficult to imagine Warwick without it”, Warwick Friendly Society (WFS) General Manager, Ahmad Almesfer said. The centre initially included the CMC, Sullivan and Nicolaides Pathology, Southern Downs Dental and Warwick Physioworks. “The health centre was the vision of the society Board of Directors who saw there was a need to bring Warwick’s medical services together in one easy to access location.” Mr Almesfer continued. Initial meetings were held between the society, six of Warwick’s general practitioners and several allied health professionals. After discussion it was agreed that an “umbrella” facility would be of great benefit to the Warwick community, so the Friendly Society purchased land on Wood St and began the planning and building of the Friendly Society Health Centre. The very first tenant, Condamine Medical Centre, was formed by the
amalgamation of three practices, Guy Street Family Practice, Dr Ackermann’s practice and the Warwick Central Clinic. The new location was very successful for the Condamine Medical Centre, and after a few years, the Friendly Society’s neighbouring property allowed Southern Downs Dental and Physioworks to move to larger premises and CMC to expand. X-ray was also added to the list of services provided in the precinct. At first the centre did not include a pharmacy, but after extensions were completed in February 2008 the Friendly Society Health Centre Pharmacy was opened. The 4700 members of the Warwick Friendly Society can be justly proud of the Society and its Health Centre. “Our members are the “owners” of the business and are represented by the Board of Directors; our purpose is to support their healthcare needs”, Mr Almesfer said. The Warwick Friendly Society was formed in 1908 by the association of several community groups who had the support of their members, particularly those who were in a time of need, as their common goal. The Society continues to be a member owned, community not for profit organisation which operates two Guardian pharmacies, the Warwick Friendly Society Health Centre and other healthcare infrastructure to support the health of its members and the Warwick community. ●

FOCUS ON … MWF Plumbing
ONE STOP FOR REBATE TANKS BY TANIA PHILLIPS The Southern Downs Regional Council Rural Water Tank Rebate Scheme is now in full swing and for those chosen to take part in the $1,050,000 scheme, it is time to start installing those tanks! MWF Plumbing, Stanthorpe prides itself in being the perfect place to go not only for the tank itself but for the installation with their licensed plumbers needed to install the tank as part of the rebate scheme. For those needing a hand with the paperwork, the staff are more than happy to help with this also making MWF a one-stop shop. In fact, they can help with the ins and outs of the scheme making sure that the new tank is connected to the house and not just being used to water the garden - another rule under the scheme. A family-owned business, serving the needs of the region for more than half a century, MWF Plumbing are part of the community and understand why this scheme is so important and why getting the right tank, installed properly is paramount not only so the customer receives their rebate but also receive the benefits of having a new tank attached to their everyday home water supply.
General Notices
The staff are aware that a tank of 20,000 Litres or larger must be purchased and in fact, if customers are quick, they already have a selection of tanks of the right size in some of the most popular colours in their yard and ready to go. This means customers won’t have to wait for a tank to arrive or be at the mercy of border or any other travel restrictions that come into play in these uncertain times. MWF sell Tankmakers and Duraplas brands - giving customers a choice of styles, price ranges and quality. For those who like to shop around, they can quote up on the tank and install so the customer knows exactly what their target price will be. The colour choice is endless for both brands so if the customer needs to match the tank to fences, roofing and other fixtures, that won’t be a problem. Come in and talk to the friendly staff at MWF Plumbing, 64 Maryland Street, Stanthorpe, email them on adminmwf@ mwfplumbing.com.au or follow them on Facebook. ●

THE SPIN
WORLD GONE CRAZY What crazy times we’re are living! No-one could have predicted AFL CEO, Gill McLachlan would be spending his days in late August 2020 trying to determine where best to hold the 2020 AFL Grand Final. The flagship AFL event appears destined to be forced from its spiritual home, the MCG. Queensland and WA are lobbying hard for the show piece event as the AFL remain tight-lipped about the structure and date of this year’s GF. However, McLachlan has said an announcement will be made this week. In addition to hosting the Grand Final at the Gabba, Queensland has also made a bid to host the Brownlow Medal event. So, look into your crystal ball and tell, by the end of the week will....the Gabba be hosting the AFL Grand Final? Is the Brownlow knees up headed for Bris-Vegas or the Gold Coast? Will Jeff Horn or Tim Tszyu be the toast of Townsville after the Rumble on the Reef? Will the Broncos hierarchy have a case to answer over Pangai Jnr’s third party agreements (messy). Will Cam Smith announce it’s time to call time on his illustrious career? Has he had an epiphany and decided to become a Bronco or a Titan? So many questions so few answers. We do now know Anthony Seibold’s days as coach of the Broncos are done. As Seibs gallops out the door with the cash, there goes an experiment that didn’t work. Now it is time to move forward. No crystal ball needed to see that. - Casey RATS WIN BUT COULD BE BETTER The Warwick Rats made it four from four in 2020 with a 25-15 win over the Toowoomba Bears. The Rats now sit second on the ladder behind St George who have played one more game than Warwick. The cold and blustery conditions at Risdon Oval on Saturday made it difficult for both sides but the Rats were definitely their own worst enemy. The win was far from polished and not pretty. The points are in the bank but on another day they (Rats) may not have been so fortunate. The composure and discipline that has served the team well in recent games evaporated. Two yellow cards were issued for repeat infringements. Composure was replaced by frantic and erratic decision making. Last pass plays became reckless and the ball was turned over too frequently. Against that backdrop, the Rats scored four good tries and in some productive passages of play the Rats put themselves in a winning position. The Bears, who are one of the top sides in the competition, also did not play to their potential. The Rats coaching staff will no doubt be addressing those issues that plagued the side during this week’s training sessions as the team prepares for their clash with USQ. The Rats are back at Rison Oval again this week and everyone players, coaching staff and supporters will be looking for a turnaround in several areas as the Rats with an eye on the finals. Kick-off is 3pm on Saturday 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

The Warwick Water Rats continue their winning run with a win over the Toowoomba Bears. It was not pretty win but the points are in the Bank thanks to some periods of outsanding attack. TESTING CONDITIONS FOR GOLFERS Stanthorpe golfers faced a mix of very unkind weather conditions last weekend. The club foursomes were decided over two days of play and there was a single event on Saturday. Players on Saturday faced a mix bag of every type of unpleasant -a howling wind which was blowing off a polar bear somewhere close by, wind-chill, rain, sleet - in fact everything but sunshine and snow. The majority of the field, like true believers, soldiered on. There were a few who found the warmth of the fire in the club house more appealing. Tom Fittock was the winner of the Men’s event. After a countback he edged out Scott Constable. Both players returned nett 72. Scott claiming the best Gross of nett 73. Fittock paid a price for his win. His handicap lowered once again. With a score his beloved Brisbane Lions would have been proud of, Max Hunter received a special NA(R)GA award. Lyn Ludlow returned the winning score of nett 76 in the Ladies stroke event. Trish Fittock almost made it a family double. She returned nett 81 collecting the runner’s up prize for the ladies. On Sunday, conditions were not quite as fierce on Sunday for the men’s and Ladies foursomes championships. The championships are played over 27 holes and this alternate shot format seems to bring out the best in the teams who had to contend with that strong arctic wind. In a thrilling finale to the Men’s A Grade, there was a play-off between David Burgess and Matt Burgess and Scott Constable and Wes Smith to find the winner. Team Burgess stepped up in the play off to grab the A Grade title. Their opponents finished with the best nett on the day. Keith Jones and Ian Pickering outlasted the rest of the field to win the B Grade competition. Nikki Waterworth and Lyn Ludlow proved a winning partnership in the Ladies event while Helen Jones and Lorraine Evans returned the Best Nett. This Saturday everyone is looking forward to better conditions for the medley 4BBB Stableford sponsored by Jamworks Gourmet Food. It is a shotgun start at 11.45am. Players please add your list to the time sheet and check in early to allow the starter sufficient time to allocate starting tee positions. MIDWEEK LADIES Ten ladies braved the very cold conditions in Stanthorpe to play an individual 18-
Thursday, 27 August, 2020
hole Stableford midweek event. The outright winner was Sandra Morris with an impressive score of 35 points. Thirtytwo points was good enough to put Mandy Benussi in the runner’s up spot. Debbie Wilmot won the run down with 31 points. TANNY BACK IN BUSINESS It has taken awhile but the Tanny bowlers are back in business after the Covid shutdown. Thanks to the work of Di and Sue, who sorted out the necessary Covid-19 requirements, allowing the club out the other side. This past Thursday, Turkey Triples made a return. Hal Catchpole, Bazza Frame, Mick O’Leary were straight back into the winners circle while Myrtle, Nick Farmer and Jean Calam returned the lowest score Even though many players were returning from a spell there were some good bowls played, the food was excellent and green played well. Congratulations to Peter Gynther who recently won the club open singles championship. The spell certainly did Peter no harm. He also recently combined with Dave Butz to win the club’s pairs. Special thanks from members to Sue, Di, Walshy, Butzy, Grumpy for their work during lockdown. This group looked after the paperwork, cleaning, accounts, green maintenance and mowing. The club would not be open now if not for the hard work of these volunteers. Tanny Club is open Tuesday to Sunday. Don’t forget the Friday night pool comepitition, meals and raffles. Night bowls will make a return as soon as the weather warms up. Watch this space. BAD WEATHER STOPS PLAY -AGAIN Bad weather on Saturday once again plagued the Southern Downs Men’s pairs comepitition. This is the third time the comepitition has been interrupted due to weather conditions. The first round was completed before the weather conditions became so severe on the Summit greens that, in the interest of the health and safety of the all, the remainder of play was called off. As the event has to be completed the decision was made that the following pairs will contest the quarter finals next Saturday at The Summit. Frank Woods and George Sloss (Goondiwindi); Frank Taylor and Mick Mills (The Summit); Darren Stanley and Rob Capelli (The Summit); Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert (The Summit); John Graham and John Fairley (Composite); Peter Gynther and Michael O’Leary (Tannymorel); Rod Newlands and Jamie Zamprogno (The Summit) and Mark Sellens and Gary Roberts (Goondiwindi). Organisers are hopeful all players involved will have thawed out in time for Saturday afternoon’s games. The semi-final will be played on Saturday Afternoon. The final will be played on Sunday at a venue to be determined. Players no doubt looking forward to the forecast of more pleasant conditions this weekend. A quick look at events on the horizon. On Friday, the club is hosting a Family Community Barbecue. Please contact the club to make a booking. In addition to the Southern Downs Pairs games this weekend there will also be Social bowls played Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. A reminder that the First Division Pennants play in Warwick on September 5 . There will also be Social Bowls at the
Summit. Sunday September 6 - Final First Division Pennant and Second Division Pennant - The Summit. KEEN STANTHORPE SPORTERS A small but eager field of players turned out for Sporters Sunday in Stanthorpe. The field was missing some players who were committed to the club’s foursomes championships played later in the day. Then there were those who chose to fund somewhere warmer - probably at home in front of their fire and out of the wind. Paul Armstrong was declared the winner after returning the best round of the day. Runner-up mark Lyman was not far behind. All players gladly accepting their prizes for their effort after braving the early morning conditions. More Sporters this Sunday. The forecast thankfully is for much better early morning conditions. Tee off is from 7.30 am to 8am and all are welcome to come and play. WARWICK WOMEN’S GOLF The weather bureau reported top wind gusts in Warwick of 52 km/hr at 11am this Wednesday but that was not enough to deter 33 ladies from hitting the Warwick golf course for their weekly competition. In spite of the conditions, there were some great scores in the round sponsored by the Cherry Tree Coffee and Dining. Ann Tomkins scored 39 points and, along with runner-up Zel (38 points), is sure to be heading to Cherry Tree for coffee and cake. Players with scores of better than 36 received a ball in the run down. Conditions last Saturday were also challenging and the early risers certainly saw the best conditions of the. Winds were around 30 k/hr with top gusts of 56 km/hr around 1.15pm. The field of 18 women returned some excellent scores including five birdies and three gobbles. Vicki Bennett returned a great round scoring 38 points to win the comepitition sponsored by Warwick Watchmakers and Jewellers Runner up Tub Ingall (37 points) also found conditions to her liking Michelle Wright had a nice birdie on the seventh and Liz Ellis on the 10th. Mary Young was another to score a birdie scoring hers on the third and a gobble on the 17th. Two players who gobbled and scored birdies were Janine Stewart on the third and Majella Kahler on the 10th. This weekend the ladies will play a Single Stableford sponsored by one of the club’s regular sponsors, Coffee Club . On Wednesday. 2 September a limited three club event plus putter has been scheduled. This event won’t be handicapped but always is an enjoyable day as everyone gets into how much fun you can have with just three clubs. The event has been kindly sponsored by Coorey’s Drapery. KEEN OR CRAZY Were the 10 bowlers on the green at Southern Cross Bowls Club on Saturday keen to play in the cold, blustery and dusty conditions to improve their match fitness or plain crazy? The jury remains undecided. Thea Francis was at it again. Her good form helping her skip Geoff Davis take out the winner’s prize with the highest winning margin against the team including husband, Rob Francis and skip Clark Davidson. Runners-up were Allan Davidson, Marion Skaines and skip Val Gray. Congratulations to Southern Cross player Linda Hartley and Jill Hankins (Goondiwindi) who combined to win the Ladies District Pairs. The game was played in trying conditions at the Warwick East Club on Saturday. Great result. freetimes.com.au

3 October; Ross Norman’s Memorial day for Enid Saturday 17 October; Open Fours Carnival Sunday 15 November and Patron and Patroness Day Saturday, 12 December. COMPRESHENSIVE WIN FOR WOLVES COLTS Saturday, the Warwick Wolves Colts continued their strong performance in the Football Toowoomba Colts competition scoring an impressive three nil victory over West Wanderers Toowoomba. The weather and field conditions were not brilliant but the players adapted and played good football. West Wanderers applied early pressure and were desperately unlucky not to open the scoring after hitting the post from distance. Joey Brown did a good job in goals to hold Wanderers out. Bryon Whittaker played his best game of the year in the centre of defence and proved very difficult to get past. Jacob Walters and Lochlann Hogan worked tirelessly in the midfield, providing support for both defence and attack. Mitchell Scheiwe opened the scoring for the Wolves halfway through the first half after Wanderers failed to clear a corner. Wolves held onto their lead at halftime. The introduction of Noah Dwan to the striker’s role paid immediate dividends for the Wolves. Dwan sped past the defence and coolly found the back of the net to provide his team with a more comfortable two-nil lead. He doubled his tally 10 minutes later with a similar play - a mix of speed and clinical finishing. Wanderers were not given a chance to get back into the game and in the end, it was a convincing three-nil win for the Wolves. This weekend the Wolves face main their main rivals St Albans in what looks, on paper to be another tough encounter RECK TRIUMPS OVER CONDITIONS Murray Reck has triumphed in very difficult conditions on Sunday to take the open class in the 600 yards F Class shoot with 115.4 from Richard McKillop 110.4, Margaret Taylor 108.2, Greg Wilson 100.2 and Dave Taylor (one range only) 53.1 on a possible 60. This Sunday, 30 August the club will have a “fly” shoot at 300yards followed by a barbecue. The AGM will be held after the shoot at the club house and all members are asked to attend if possible. Sign on - 8.30am for 9am start. WARWICK GREENS BUSY Members of the Warwick Bowls club played for KFC vouchers Wednesday. The winners of the popular family feasts after a draw of winning cards were Richard Tartan and Steve Tyter. The second round of the Club Selected
pairs was scheduled for Saturday. Conditions were abysmal with many players choosing a day at home over a cold day on the green. Only two games were completed as some players pulled out or sat out. In the two games decided T Seaniger and R Tartan dominated throughout the game to score a 22-9 over B Buckle and R Bean. In the other game P Kerr and J Ruhle played H Gibson and B Black. The lead changed throughout the game favouring both teams. On the second last end Black’s team held five shots to take a two-point lead. In a thrilling finish, on the final end John Ruhle was a shot down but managed a good drive to finish holding three shots. He and his partner able to claim a one point win in the game. The rule book of rules state that “you play on or before the date advertised or forfeit’, however games director John Ruhle let this pass on this occasion as the club’s notes were not published last week. The following players have been called up to play this weekend:- T Prichard and J Rickard v Y Reid and D Phillips. T Gallagher and E Welsh v P Seipelt and M O’Leary. Bowlers your diaries should include the following dates:- Club Pairs and Social this Saturday.. Tuesday 1 September - Monthly Triples; Wednesday 2 September Friendly Bowls. in fourth spot on the ladder. The Redbacks good form continued with an unexpected two-one victory over Football Toowoomba Premier League leaders Willowburn. The Redbacks played controlled entertaining football in the cold and windy conditions. They pressured the Willowburn keeper early when Ben Rametta and Aiden Fox had opportunities to score. Willowburn showed why they have been the number one side in Toowoomba for so long putting sustained pressure on the Redbacks defence. To their credit, Lanza, Hitchener, Halford and Crestani held firm. Thirty minutes into the game, Simon Mascadri found the back of the net from 20 metres out to give United a one - nil lead which they held at the halftime break. In the early stages of the second half, United pushed for another goal. Jared Hitchener overlapped the Willowburn defence down the right flank and was brought down by the Willowburn fullback. The referee’s assistant rightly signalled a penalty, despite the Willowburn protests. Matt Purcell stepped up and put the ball away for a two-nil United lead. Willowburn were stirred into action and they applied pressure to the tiring Redback’s defence. Kevin Doyle was found unmarked at the far post and put the ball into the back of the net to put the home side on the scoresheet. The score was two-one with 20 minutes to play. United continued to work hard in defence, keeping the Willowburn attack at bay to finished strongly scoring a welldeserved two-one victory. The entire United team worked hard and played well all game, however the performance of Aiden Halford stood out. Halford had a very solid defensive game. Hunter Murphy also played one of his best games of the year. United play Highfields in another away game on Saturday evening at Highfields home ground. RABBIT HOPS AWAY WITH SINGLES TITLE Darren Rabbit has taken out the East Warwick Bowls Club A Grade singles beating Ed Diery 27-10 in an exciting final. It was close early before Darren found his line and length and he drew away to win. Congratulations to Darren. This past Saturday another round in the ‘B’ Grade singles was played less than ideal conditions - Chris Lawler defeating Sid Morris 26-13 with Bill Gibson as marker. The B grade final is set to be played Thursday 27 or Saturday 29 August. Conditions were difficult for bowlers on Saturday. One game of social bowls was attempted by John Harslett and Peter Dippelsman but they soon retreated to the comfort of the Bowls Club while several members played in the SDMDBA Pairs at the Summit Bowls Club where play was also called off due to the conditions. There will be social bowls next Saturday starting at 1pm. Don’t forget players nominations close for S/S Pairs and Club Selected Triples and Fours on Saturday, 29 August so get your names in. SPORTERS EVENTS ATTRACT BIG FIELDS The recent Hawker Road Function Centre trophy event proved popular with 55 Warwick Sporters hitting the course. Winner, and a picture of governance, was Keith Clarke with score of 42 points. For runner up Ian Stewart (41) it was a welcome return to the dais. The ball rundown went to scores of 35 points or better. On Wednesday, 19 August a strong field of 63 teed off in the August Betta Home Living trophy. Derrick Hewitt with a score of 39 points took the honours ahead of runner-up Craig Burgess (38 point. Collecting a ball in the rundown were all players with a score of 33 or better. The “Í Love Computers” prize for the week goes to Garry and Alec who scored an amazing 90 Stableford points each for their rounds. Wait, perhaps they entered their Stableford scores instead of their STROKE scores into the computer. Some people will do anything to win a prize, I understand each may have received a copy of Bill Gates’ book, ‘Computing for Dummies as their prize This week Sporters played for the Warwick Hotel trophy (results in next week’s Spin). The following week is the September stroke round sponsored by the Pro shop. Members may have noticed an improvement in the fourth and ninth greens as the winter Poa grass finally begins fill The entire is showing the benefit of 35mls of rain received recently. The recent Covid-19 outbreaks are not too from our doorstep and serve as a timely reminder to all members to continue to practice social distancing; use the hand sanitizer at the sign in point and remember to complete the sign in sheet correctly. Members must sign into the clubhouse on their initial entry but are not required to resign on subsequent visits on the same day. Two Final thoughts for the week, “No shot is so bad, that you can’t make the next one worse. And finally “ With the impact of Covid-19, my hands are seeing more alcohol than my liver” BLOWN OFF COURSE Conditions were also the topic of conversation on the green at the Stanthorpe Bowls Club as many members also chose a day by the fire. Saturday’s games were blown off course, cancelled due to conditions. A small group of brave souls faced the whistle of the wind on Wednesday. Two games of triples were decided. Gordon Gallaway Dot Rankin and Brian Brown narrowly outscored Jack Bell, Luisa Girgenti and Ray Rankin 17-14. Val White Ernie Jones and Len Girgenti ignored the conditions and proved too strong for Sylean Fairley Robyn Rose and John Fairley. The result 24-13. REDBACKS THREE ON THE TROT The Stanthorpe United players are relishing the opportunity to play in the Toowoomba Football competition. After their third win on the trot last Saturday night they have sit
