‘Crushing it’ in the finals... The Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival is in the running as a Finalist in the Australian Event Awards, a true testament to the spirit of our local communities. READ MORE, STORY PAGE 2
A ‘call to arms’ By Tania Phillips Granite Belt Growers Association president Angus Ferrier has issued a “call to arms” as they prepare for their best harvest in several years. “The Granite Belt Growers Association is in the process of planning a promotion of the job opportunities in our region this summer,” Mr Ferrier told the Free Times this week. “That will be aimed at anyone who is searching online for jobs in horticulture, be they backpackers or displaced Australian workers. “The horticulture industry is prepared to employ anyone who is prepared to have a go and it is a misconception to say we only employ foreigners.” Angus Ferrier said the horticultural industry has heard the message loud and clear from the State and Federal Governments that everyone needs to work together to support displaced Australian workers during COVID-19. “Our industry is no different - we are prepared to play our role in that,” Angus said. “It’s not true to say that there are no backpackers in Australia.
“From the latest data from the Department of Immigration there is roughly half the number of backpacker visa holders in Australia as there would normally be. “There are still plenty in the country - the question is how many of them are able and willing to work in horticulture? “If there is a proportion of them busy working in hospitality then the risk is that we will start to run short. “But there are still some in the country. “Keep in mind there are horticultural regions in northern Queensland and the Lockyer Valley for example who start to wind down in October. “So there is a regular thing every season where their workers start to head towards the Granite Belt at a certain time of the year. “While we expect that will still happen to some extent we’re just not quite sure how many are in that category this year.” The call comes in the leadup to the harvest season which starts in September/October and moves into full swing in November - and as restrictions start to tighten again due to an increase of COVID-19 and in line with a reduc-

tion of the number of backpackers, a traditional source of harvest time staff. The Granite Belt Growers Association will aim their campaign at a general online presence, including social media components and a search engine presence with a view to driving traffic - most importantly jobseekers to the regions’ recruitment agents, accommodation providers and those farms who employ directly and are members of the Association. “The aim is to raise awareness that after years of severe drought the Granite Belt is back in business to a certain degree,” Angus Ferrier said. “There are job opportunities here this summer that have not existed for the past couple of years due to drought, and most importantly we are here providing fruit and veg to the country. “It’s almost a call to arms for people to come here and help with the harvest.” According to Angus the growers will be coming off a “low base” but the season should be a marked improvement on last year. But there is still room for rainfall this spring that will further enhance prospects - and the growers need to be able to access workers who
must be considered essential at this time. “We acknowledge the work of the State Government and the State Health Officer - at the very least we can’t begrudge them for doing their job - their sole focus must be on the health and safety of the broader Queensland community and we do respect that,” Angus said. “However our position is and always will be that horticultural workers - be they unskilled, semi skilled or specialists - should always be exempt from a hard border closure because they are serving an essential role in our community. “That’s not just about backpackers - sometimes when we have the border bubbles it doesn’t just affect our backpackers, it also affects our ability to bring in workers who have a usual residential address outside the bubble. “It threatens their ability to come to our region and do their critical work. “Our position will always be that those workers and employers should have the right to move essential workers around the Granite Belt and in some circumstances into regions immediately adjacent to the border.” Continued page 3

Festival a finalist The Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival has been confirmed amongst the best events in Australia with the announcement of National Finalists in the 2020 Australian Event Awards. The 10 days of harvest celebrations wrapped up on 8 March 2020, fortunately slipping in as Queensland’s last major festival to be held before the Covid-19 restrictions changed the game for events. It’s one of Queensland’s longest running and most successful festivals, ‘crushing it’ since 1966 with its foot-stomping, grapecrushing harvest celebrations. Event industry leaders and experts from around Australia who judge the Awards have read through hundreds of entries and determined that Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival deserved to sit amongst the National Finalists. Entries are judged on all aspects of event management including best practice, innovation, marketing, stakeholder engagement and management, sustainability and event legacy. Across the board, 2020 was a very high scoring year. In fact, Brenda LaPorte, co-chair of the Judging Panel, reported that “the entries put forward for judging on average scored significantly higher than last year”. “This is an incredible result knowing what the industry has been through in 2020,” Brenda said this week. “It clearly reflects the high quality of the events delivered across Australia and what we have to look forward to when our industry makes its comeback.” Festival president Max Hunter said in 2020
The editor’s desk
the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival brought a $2 million boost to Stanthorpe “at a time when we really needed it most”. “The Granite Belt was doing it especially tough over summer with drought and bushfire causing a downturn in both tourism and agriculture,” Max said. “Our community pulled together and hosted another amazing harvest celebration and on top of the economic boost, it lifted community spirits.” Australian Event Award Winners will be announced in October. More information is available on the Event Awards website www. eventawards.com.au The Biennial Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival will be next held in March 2022.

As of this week the Southern Free Times has transitioned back to a ‘newsprint’ format, having been printed in a gloss style since mid-2017. We hope readers will like the more ‘traditional’ newspaper format, and for me as the editor it’s a return to the way in which the Free Times found its way into readers’ hands when I first came on board in September 2016. The look may be different to what readers have been used to in more recent times, but what will remain the same is our commitment as a publication to local news coverage. We are very strongly of the view that our communities value a printed local newspaper, despite many changes in the national, state and local media landscape in the last few months, and the transition of many regional publications in Queensland to digital-only. I have told this story to a few people lately to help make my point that printed newspapers are alive and well. It relates to work experience I undertook as a - fresh-faced? - journalism student at the Brisbane bureau of ‘The Australian’ in 1988, a little over 30 years ago. A somewhat crusty old reporter told me I was basically wasting my time as “printed newspapers will cease to exist in the next decade thanks to technology”. Well fast forward 30-plus years later - I have less hair and might be a little crusty myself, but print is still very much part of the regional media landscape at least. So much for predictions!

Harvest “call to arms”, new COVID restrictions From page 1 The Southern Downs Regional Council this week issued a statement about new COVID-19 restrictions applying to our council area and the wider Darling Downs region, with the restrictions having taken effect from Monday. A council spokeswoman said “our community and the wider Queensland community have done an exceptional job at slowing the spread of COVID-19”. “We need to ask our residents to once again step up and help us prevent transmission throughout our state,” the spokeswoman said. “The Southern Downs Local Government Area is included in the list of regions currently required to implement tougher COVID-19 restrictions. “For residents this means that gatherings of no more than 10 people will be allowed in one home or outdoors. “This total includes the number of family members that reside in the home. “Businesses can still operate, adhering to their COVID safe plans. “Visits to aged care, disability accommodation services and hospitals are also limited to protect our most vulnerable.” The new restrictions are based on contact tracing information from Queensland Health relating to Toowoomba on Sunday 16 August. Those details have been given as Sunday 16 August - The Southern Hotel Toowoomba, 8.15am - 10am Sunday 16 August - Queens Park Markets East Toowoomba, 10am - 11am Queensland Health has said anyone who has been to these locations at the times specified should monitor their health and if they develop any COVID-19 symptoms, even mild, get tested. As of the start of this week there were no current COVID-19 cases in the Southern Downs council area or in Toowoomba, or in the wider Darling Downs Health region centred on Toowoomba. In the council statement Mayor Vic Pennisi said local businesses throughout the region “set an exemplary standard of service while prioritising safety”. “I am so proud of how our local businesses have adapted, continued to trade and change the way they deliver services to their customers,” Cr Pennisi said. “It’s a real testament to their resilience and determination. “Residents responded to the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in Queensland well and council is anticipating great cooperation from the community as these new restrictions come into place. “Our community has shown incredible dedication to adhering to restrictions and their upkeep of hygiene practices as well. “I am really confident that our residents will step up, accept their responsibilities as part of our community, and will band together as we persevere through. “I have also seen incredible compassion from people as they take care of our most vulnerable residents.

Final vote on upgrade Southern Downs councillors have remained divided over reducing road upgrade conditions imposed on the owners of Cherrabah Resort at Elbow Valley east of Warwick. But a majority of councillors voted at the August general meeting last week in favour of the reduced conditions as requested by Cherrabah, which will involve only partial upgrading of Keoghs Road. Councillors debated the issue during the August round of committee meetings ahead of the general meeting, with Cherrabah’s owners Wenxing and Wenwei Ma having disputed an original condition to widen the seal on the full length of Keoghs Road. The road condition was the result of an approval given by the previous council administration in December 2019 for a commercial water extraction operation on Cherrabah which caused significant community controversy. The council at that stage required a full upgrade of Keoghs Road to handle increased heavy vehicle movements to and from Cherrabah expected to result from the water operation which would involve the extraction of up to a million litres of underground water annually from Cherrabah for commercial plastic bottling on the Gold Coast. The Ma brothers appealed the road condition, stating it would be “onerous, with neighbouring Elbow Valley property owners who objected to the water plan having remained hopeful the cost of the roadworks would render the overall plan unviable. But councillors last week voted six to three in favour of reducing the road condition to up-
grading of several bends and crests in the road, but with the proviso that if future truck movements increase beyond Cherrabah’s initial estimates the full upgrade of Keoghs Road could be required. Voting in favour of the full upgrade were Councillors Stephen Tancred, Andrew Gale and Cynthia McDonald. In favour of the reduced condition were Mayor Vic Pennisi, Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley and Councillors Jo McNally, Marco Gliori, Sheryl Windle and Cameron Gow. The result of last week’s vote was in slight contrast to the vote taken on the overall water extraction plan last December - in favour were former mayor Tracy Dobie and then councillors Neil Meiklejohn, Rod Kelly, Sheryl Windle and then Deputy Mayor Jo McNally, while against were Vic Pennisi, Yve Stocks and Cameron Gow. Former councillor Marika McNichol was absent from the vote due to a bushfire threatening her property at the time. The negotiation process over Keoghs Road had been ongoing since the start of this year with the Ma brothers having been granted several extensions of time by the council to enable them to submit fresh traffic studies by their consultants to support their argument for the road condition to be reduced. During the debate on the road - both in committee and at the general meeting - Crs Tancred, Gale and McDonald all argued that only a full widening would be likely to ensure safe separation and movement of vehicles passing each other on Keoghs Road.

Further tests requested Warwick’s John Dee abattoir was this week awaiting the results of further testing of part of a beef shipment by Chinese authorities after China last week suspended exports from the plant. Late last week China announced it would suspend exports from John Dee after claiming to have detected the substance chloramphenicol in beef from the export abattoir, one of Warwick’s largest employers. In synthetic form chloramphenicol is an animal antibiotic banned throughout most of the world, but can also occur naturally in stock feeds. The Chinese authorities said the substance was detected during routine testing at the port of Ningbo but John Dee has not ruled out the possibility of a “false positive result having been returned, and as of this week was requesting secondary testing of the beef in question in China. Federal Agriculture Minister and Maranoa MP David Littleproud says his department has been working with both John Dee and the relevant authorities in China to resolve the issue but has also downplayed suggestions the Chinese claim is linked to current trade bans placed on Australian produce by China. Both Mr Littleproud and John Dee spokesman Warren Stiff have said the Chinese government is entitled to suspend exports of any product it deems has not met testing standards but have also said the initial test results need to be confirmed through a secondary testing process. John Dee issued the following statement on Monday of this week “John Dee Warwick has been advised of a positive chemical residue detected during routine import testing at Ningbo Port, China, the statement said. “The named compound is Chloramphenicol, an antibiotic drug that is banned for use in food production animals in Australia and around the World. “We have been advised that following testing of multiple products in the consignment only one primal was involved and the other beef primals from the same production were cleared. “We are making all requests to run a confirmation test in China of retained product thereby ruling out the chance of a false positive result. “Dependent upon the particular lab testing procedure used, false positives are reasonably likely to occur. “A confirmatory second test is scientifically valid under generally accepted residue testing programs.
“Through a traceback of prior production and working with the respected and independent feedlot supplying the 150 head contract we were able to prove that no animal has been treated with the banned antibiotic during the six month grain feeding period. “Routine antibiotic testing, conducted by a NATA approved lab, during production did not indicate the presence of any antibiotic. “We have carton product in store from the same consignment and have arranged further laboratory testing to confirm status. “All cartons are traceable by barcode and correlated by production time and are linked to beef carcass and animal origin. “The Australian National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) individually identifies the livestock entering the food chain and all such records have been provided to the Department of Agriculture. “Whilst one of the smaller exporters, our brands are highly regarded in China, Japan and US markets, particularly in the areas of specification and accuracy in carton labelling (foreign language). “Food safety is non-negotiable, and the temporary suspension is the right of the Importing Market. “In this case China’s General Administration of Customs China (GACC) has made the determination. “Working closely with the Department of Agriculture and with the full support of our Agriculture Minister, Mr David Littleproud MP our aim is the lifting of our temporary suspension. “To this end we trust that GACC consider the results of our investigation and authorise verification testing. “Through early 2020 we worked very closely with our established Chinese Importers and end users to negotiate massive market disruptions suffered as a consequence of COVID 19 by rescheduling shipments and payment terms. “Today each of these valued Chinese Companies remains with our business. “Now these same customers have ongoing orders for our product that we cannot supply in the immediate term. “We trust that they will stand by us through this suspension so that we can return our production levels to normal. “In the meanwhile we can expect production stand downs and reduced throughput from our 600 strong regional work force. UPDATES AT www.freetimes.com.au

$4.2M water funding By Jeremy Sollars The Queensland Government says it is “continuing to support drought-stricken border communities, with $4.2 million allocated to the Goondiwindi region’s future water security and growth”. In a statement late last week Queensland Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said “following some of the driest years on record, the Government and Goondiwindi Regional Council were committed to providing ongoing water security for the Goondiwindi region”. “Queensland has an economic strategy for recovery that includes $50 billion worth of infrastructure,” Dr Lynham said. “For the nearly 11,000 Queenslanders who live in the Goondiwindi region, these measures will mean security for drinking water. “Like any infrastructure investment we make, we will be seeking the best possible opportunities for investment and employment for locals. “The Queensland Government will contribute $4.2 million and work with Goondiwindi Regional Council to implement its water security plan by mid-2021. “The funding will reimburse Goondiwindi Regional Council for a number of projects already undertaken, including the establishment of new bores at Texas and Yelarbon, the initial installation of two new Great Artesian Basin bores in Goondiwindi, desilting the Yarrilwanna waterhole at Bungunya, and improvements to infrastructure at the water treatment facility at Yelarbon. “The State Government funding will also support upcoming works in the region, including improvements to infrastructure at the water treatment facilities in Inglewood and Goondiwindi, an additional pump and storage facilities for the Toobeah community, and the connection of the two newly-installed bores in Goondiwindi.
With a State election due in October more water announcements could be in the pipeline... so to speak. “The Glenlyon and Coolmunda dams that supply multiple Darling Downs communities and industries are currently 14 and 28 percent, respectively. “Without rain, some of those communities had as little as six months’ water supply available in storage.” Goondiwindi Mayor Lawrence Springborg said the council “has been working closely with Sunwater and the Queensland and New South Wales governments to identify water security solutions for the region and ensure supply for the Goondiwindi region during droughts”. “Goondiwindi Regional Council is committed to the short and long-term water security of communities across the Goondiwindi region,” Cr Springborg said. “Council has devoted significant resources
towards ensuring that the essential infrastructure is in place to meet that aim, and I have to thank the Queensland Government for their partnership and financial support as we’ve put this plan in place to secure the region’s water supply. “The Goondiwindi region has been drought-declared since 2014 - our community is still facing the ongoing drought and water restrictions remain in place within our region. “Our residents continue to do their bit to conserve water to maximise the supply we have available.” Dr Lynham said the latest measures followed previous water security support for Goondiwindi Regional Council last year. “We have been working closely with Goondiwindi Council for some time to drought-proof
the Goondiwindi region,” Dr Lynham said. “In 2019, we facilitated water releases from Glenlyon Dam to ensure there was more water to go around for both the community and its businesses,” he said. “The Queensland Government will continue to invest across the state to ensure that no town will go without drinking water.” MORE TO COME - MAYBE? With a State election due on Saturday 31 October Dr Lynham’s announcement suggests there could be more water initiatives announced for regional Queensland communities in the coming weeks. One of those could be the proposed water pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick, which would allow the Southern Downs and Granite Belt regions to access emergency town water supplies from Wivenhoe Dam in Brisbane, which is connected to Toowoomba via an existing pipeline over the range. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced in January of this year her government would seek to fast-track the project, pending the outcome of a $1 million feasibility study announced in November 2019. But to date the Premier has made no further announcements about the project and her office and that of Dr Lynham have said work on the feasibility study is continuing. The Free Times understands however that a draft of the study has been completed and is with the Southern Downs Regional Council, but the council likewise has made no public statements in recent weeks about the pipeline project, other than to say it will conduct a “review” of the study. Mayor Vic Pennisi has expressed qualified support for the pipeline but has made it clear the council wants to see the full details including costings, and what proportion of the cost of the project would be passed on to ratepayers if the State Government requires a council contribution.

Sunwater ordered to back-pay employees Queensland dam operator Sunwater is backpaying employees more than $2 million and has entered into an Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with the Fair Work Ombudsman. In a statement the office of the Fair Work Ombudsman said Sunwater - a Queensland Government owned organisation - “selfreported last year that it had identified underpayments during an annual remuneration review for employees on individual contracts”. “The affected employees were mainly technical specialists and managers,” a Fair Work Ombudsman spokesman said. Sunwater owns and operates Warwick’s Leslie Dam. “The underpayments were the result of Sunwater failing to ensure its employees on individual contracts received all entitlements payable under the enterprise agreements covering its workforce, having incorrectly assumed these employees were excluded from coverage,” the Fair Work Ombudsman spokesman said. “This resulted in employees on individual contracts being underpaid base salaries, annual leave loading, on-call and relocation allowance, superannuation and accrued time-off-in-lieu. Record-keeping laws were also breached. “Sunwater has so far back-paid 73 workers a total of more than $2.3 million, which includes interest and superannuation, who were underpaid between 2006 and 2020. Individual underpayments range from less than $60 to more than $224,000. “While Sunwater has already back-paid the majority of workers, the EU requires the organisation to pay any outstanding amounts to former employees by 31 October this year.”
Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said an Enforceable Undertaking was “appropriate as the organisation had cooperated with the investigation”. “Sunwater has demonstrated a strong commitment to rectifying underpayments, and the Enforceable Undertaking commits the company to stringent measures to protect its workforce,” Ms Parker said. “This includes engaging an expert auditing firm to conduct an independent assessment of the outcomes of its rectification program and to audit its compliance over the next two years. “This matter serves as a warning to all organisations that they must prioritise workplace compliance. “Any employers who need help meeting their lawful workplace obligations should contact us. “Under the Enforceable Undertaking, Sunwater will make a contrition payment into the Commonwealth’s Consolidated Revenue Fund. “The size of the contrition payment will be 4.5 per cent of the total underpayment figure and is estimated to be more than $100,000. “The public organisation must fund an independent organisation to operate a Hotline for the next 12 months that employees can use to make enquiries in relation to their entitlements, underpayments or related employment concerns. “Sunwater is also required to display public, workplace and online notices detailing its workplace law breaches.” Employers and employees can visit www. fairwork.gov.au or contact the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94 for free workplace advice.
Meet the new CEO By Jeremy Sollars The Southern Downs Regional Council’s new Chief Executive Officer David Burges will land on deck on Monday 14 September - and it’s also something of a homecoming. He’s a Stanthorpe boy born and bred - and a former alumnus of St Joseph’s School - and for the past nine years has been CEO of the Quilpie Shire Council in western Queensland. An engineer by background and qualification, David - actually he much prefers Dave Burges has previously held senior roles at the Innisfail and Goondiwindi and Waggamba shires and prior to that with the former Ipswich City Council around the time it merged with Moreton Shire in the mid-1990s, where he began his local government career. While his parents have passed away - his father was a Stanthorpe solicitor back in the day and his parents moved back to Stanthorpe in their later years - Dave still has a sister living in the Stanthorpe area and he’s the fifth of six children in the family. But the move to Southern Downs will also have benefits from a wider family and geographical perspective. Dave and wife Nina have a daughter and three grandchildren in Brisbane along with a son at university - who spent six years at boarding school while mum and dad were at Quilpie - and another son who’s just finished high school and may also head down the Brisbane uni path. Nina’s parents are also in Brisbane and all
up the family proximity will be both convenient and considerably closer than Quilpie. From a career perspective, Dave Burges says he’s “really excited” about his new role at the head of a council organisation which is also one of our region’s largest employers. “I’m just really looking forward to the move and to building relationships with the staff of the organisation,” he told the Free Times this week. “I’ll have a different style to my predecessors, I think that’s always to be expected. “I have a lot of affinity with the region from a personal point of view and while I was with Goondiwindi and Waggamba shires for around nine years we worked pretty closely with Southern Downs so I have that familiarity as well.” With around 1000 residents Quilpie Shire is somewhat smaller than the SDRC area population-wise but at 68,000 square clicks is geographically one of the largest local government areas in Queensland. It shares livestock industries as a key economic base with Southern Downs and also has a significant resources sector based on gas and oil. In his spare time the new CEO enjoys bushwalking, watching sport and reading - and most importantly spending time with family. Who doesn’t love a jaffle? That’s what former Warwick man Jason Ryan thought when he introduced the latest of his businesses based at 12 Project Street - Jaffle Mafia. The Jaffle business joins carwash Bubble Cartel and Moline Trucking and while Jason, now based on the Sunshine Coast, owns them they are all managed on the ground by Warwick locals, providing services for locals by locals. The conglomeration of businesses started last year with the Bubble Cartel which kicked
off in 2019 when the drought was in full swing. “Warwick had no water and nobody could pick up a hose without getting a fine for it so I decided to provide an option in the town for people to get their cars washed or wash their own cars - using our water which we ship in from the Sunshine Coast,” he said of the entirely self-contained facility which he says takes no water from the region. “In a place where there was no water it seemed like the thing to do - we have ramped it up now with a lot more high level detailing.” The Jaffle Mafia is only new - an extension

Generations in store By Tania Phillips Brendan Kay at Gleeson’s Mercery in Stanthorpe knows a thing or two about Father’s Day gifts - he should he’s been in the business for 29 years -selling clothing and accessories. In fact, retail is in his blood with his great grandparents running Gleeson’s General Store 1903, so he and his family have been supplying generations of Stanthorpe locals with goods - predominantly menswear since 1945 now though, they do stock women and boys clothing too. So, after 29 years in the business he’s definitely the man to ask for those stuck as they ponder what is the best thing for their dad, husband or favourite male! “The hot items this year for father’s day would definitely be the Akubras as well as the character socks and undies,” Brendan explained. “For the Retro dad we have Pacman, Donkey

Watches back in style for Father’s Day
For everything outdoor By Tania Phillips
By Tania Phillips In recent times, as more and more people carry their phones everywhere you could have been forgiven for thinking the watch was about to go the way of the Dodo. Not so according to Maddie Burton at Maddies Gift Gallery in Stanthorpe in fact they never went out of style with the man on the land and are making a big return for everyone else. Maddie said watches were her big sellers this year. “We have the Adina work watches that currently have a $50 discount off selected styles,” she said. Maddie said as the Adina go up in quality, adding in special glass or the water-proofing that discount still applies. The Country Master Adina range comes in different colours and they are stainless steal and waterproof - perfect for the rural dad. “Most people who work on a property have a watch,” she said. “We’ve got a pretty wide range. There is also the Pierre Cardin leather range for men, with computer bags, carry bags and a really nice range of wallets in beautiful leather. I have a big range of leather wallets. The other new introduction to the shop is a games range in wood - they’re all games. It’s called Planet Fin-
There are also polo shirts, shirts and shorts for summer and there is still some winter stock available or you could come in and pick up a
Ripcurl watch or workwear for the Tradie dads. And Brendan said there was plenty of surf stock in the store as well for those looking to take a holiday at the coast. The Mercery is a bit of institution at Stanthorpe and Brendan said a lot of Granite Belt residents have passed through the store over the past century. “They come in when they are preparing to start Prep and then in no time you are putting a suit on them for graduation,” he laughed. “We’d be one of the oldest family businesses in town.” He said that century of knowledge and his own almost three decade of experience allowed them to know their customers and what they want - hence the wide range of stock. Find Gleeson’s Mercery at 4 Maryland Street in Stanthorpe, phone (07) 4681 1441 or check them out on Facebook.

If your dad’s the outdoor type then it’s worth checking out Clark’s Bearing Centre for the perfect Father’s Day gift. It’s the one-stop shop in the one-way street in Stanthorpe, according to owner Adam Dullahide, with plenty of choice to spoil the fussiest dad, with 10 percent off all power equipment until Father’s Day, and gift vouchers available for those who just can’t decide. So if dad has been hankering for a new toy – a whipper snipper or brand new push or ride-on mower, chances are Adam and wife Bec have it in stock. They don’t just sell new products. “We repair and service any type of mower – all models and brands,” Adam explained.“We stock SanLi mowers and power products, whipper snippers, and more. They’re a more affordable, reliable brand,” he said. “We also have Solo chainsaws which are made in Germany and is a really good brand and Echo Chainsaws as well. We’ve also just taken over as the Gravely dealership in Stanthorpe. “We have all the lawn care products covered plus we have a lot of agricultural parts including bearings, bolts, sprockets, seals, nuts and bolts and O rings – everything.”
Owners Adam and Bec Dullahide. It was a bearing shop to start off with but has now become primarily a mowing and chainsaw centre – though they pride themselves in having a wide variety of equipment. Adam and Bec took on the business two and a half years ago after deciding to move back to his hometown.

Wine tourism role The Southern Downs Regional Council says a national wine expert “has been secured to assist with wine tourism recovery in the Southern Downs and Scenic Rim Regional Council areas following last year’s bushfires”. A council spokeswoman said that “with more than 30 years’ industry experience, Jan Douglas has been appointed to the role of Wine Tourism Recovery Officer”. “This position is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments as a component of the 2019 Queensland Bushfires Community Recovery Package under Category C of the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements,” the spokeswoman said. Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones said this high profile appointment would make a difference to the area. “The appointment of this Wine Tourism Recovery Officer is all about providing additional supportfor the Southern Queensland wine sector,” Ms Jones said. “While COVID-19 has played havoc with the state’s tourism sector, the re-opening of intrastate travel will allow visitors to drive to the Southern Queensland wine area, which covers the Scenic Rim, Warwick and the Granite Belt to sample their great wines. “As many of the region’s local tourism operators navigate recovery from natural disasters and COVID 19 travel restrictions, the new role will support businesses and industry through key projects and events with a focus on driving wine tourism business development, growth
and resilience.” Southern Downs Councillor for Tourism Stephen Tancred said the recruitment of Jan was “a triumph for the region, with her national skills and experience value-adding and complimenting the existing professionalism of the local winemakers”. “Spanning three decades in the wine industry, Jan’s wine pedigree is both impressive and extensive and we are lucky to have the services of a successful wine marketing expert,” Cr Tancred said. “The region’s winemakers will link in with the Scenic Rim region to show food and wine lovers the best South East Queensland has to offer. “Queenslanders are supporting the Southern Downs in the post-lockdown short travel spree and our exceptional Granite Belt wines
are the front and centre reasons for that popularity. “The new role will help the wine industry extend the current busy times into the summer months. “Cellar door sales are the mainstay of sales for many wineries and Jan’s experience will help support the local industry to better understand distribution channels so they can extend their sales into the best restaurants in Brisbane as well as coastal resorts. “Taking wine to people is just as important as bringing people to the wineries. “The drought, bushfires and COVID-19 lockdowns stretched our wine and tourism industry close to breaking point. “This initiative will help our resilient operators re-launch into summer and beyond.” Queensland Wine Industry Association President Mike Hayes said the QWIA “is looking forward to working closely with Jan, the Southern Downs and Scenic Rim Regional Councils and the Department of State Development, Tourism and Innovation to support wine tourism recovery and face the challenges together”. “Bringing Jan on board with her broad experience in both wine and tourism will enable cellar doors and other businesses to get much needed hands on support which is required for the region to recover in these difficult times,” Mike said. The role of the Wine Tourism Recovery Officer is contracted until the end of 2021.
Web chat available The council says residents can now choose to communicate with a Council Customer Service staff member through the new ‘web chat’ option. A spokeswoman said “similar to other instant messaging services, residents are able to chat with staff in real time without having to pick up the phone or visit a Council building”. “The Southern Downs Regional Council’s Customer Service team has been taking requests and listening to feedback regarding how services are delivered,” the spokeswoman said. “Now, more than ever, having easily accessible online services is a major priority and much requested by residents. “Council is very pleased to announce the release of the new web chat feature available on Council’s website - www.sdrc.qld.gov.au.” Councillor for Corporate and Commercial Services Cynthia McDonald said that the addition of the web chat feature has been “introduced to provide an even more comprehensive and satisfying service for residents”. “We really want to ensure that residents are able to communicate with staff in a way that is most comfortable for them,” said Cr McDonald said. “For people who are hard of hearing or who don’t feel comfortable phoning, this service provides the same level of quick service. “Best of all, this service connects to a Southern Downs Regional Council staff member, so you can rest assured that you are dealing with someone who upholds our high level of professionalism and confidentiality. “This addition to Council’s service offerings coincides with the recent overhaul of the Customer Service Charter.

Info sought on veterans... By Deb Wheeler On the 18th of June 2020, I wrote an article about the Swan Creek School of Arts Hall Committee and the work they were undertaking in sourcing photos of men whose names appear on the WWI & WWII Honour Boards in the hall. Recently the committee was presented with, and gratefully accepted a beautifully framed photograph and Service Record of WWII Veteran, Gunner Albert Edward Ives [Deceased]. This highly prized gift was donated by Albert’s son and daughter-in-law Jim and Dale Ives. The committee is appealing to anyone with information about the families of the following veterans to contact me so I can pass the information on. Soldier Settlers’ story shared ... Last week I received my latest edition of the Queensland History Journal. It was wonderful to see the very first paper presented was written by Roger J Willis, President of the Amiens History Association. Roger and his wife Colleen purchased a block of land at Amiens and are now well and truly entrenched in the district. As luck would
have it the block of land they purchased is of significant historical merit having been the site of the experimental farm. Under Roger’s guidance a group of local residents and other interested parties have formed the Amiens History Association. The purpose of the Association is to endeavour to preserve the history of the Pikedale Soldier Settlement and share its story to the greater general public. Although the township of Amiens is a shadow of its former glory, the ever growing site of the Amiens Legacy Centre allows visitors a glimpse of life on the home front after the war. Recently a wonderful monochromatic painting by local artist Franco Arcidiacono, entitled ‘Forging A future After The Trenches,’ depicts the life of an early soldier settler and his family. While undertaking my research on the soldiers associated with the Kyoomba Sanatorium, I discovered a link between the Sanatorium and the Soldier Settlement. To date over forty men from the settlement have been identified as having received treatment for tuberculosis at the Sanatorium. It is therefore not surprising to learn a majority of these former soldiers had to give up their farms. Many of these men had no idea of farming and came from a wide variety of occupations. These men had formally worked in a variety of occupations as a bricklayer, labourer, wood carter, blacksmith, waiter, lineman, fruiterer, civil engineer, cook, plumber, tin smith, clerk, foundry worker, sailor, electrical engineer, miner, salesman, fisherman, French polisher,
The Swan Creek Hall Committee recently and gratefully accepted a framed photograph and service record of Albert Edward Ives, donated by his son and daughter-in-law. fitter, grocer, contractor, fireman, stockman, mechanic and boot maker. Even though they were willing to learn and make a new life as farmers, the lack of appropriate skills, lack of water, time for fruit trees to mature combined with the additional impact of their tuberculosis resulted in a number of
farms having to be forfeited. Roger and the committee would like to invite all readers to take a drive to Amiens and see for yourselves the work being carried out at the Amiens Legacy Centre. The centre is open to the public every Sunday from 10am until 1pm. It is well worth the drive.
William Campbell’s amazing escape... By John Telfer On 19th March 1945, Lancaster Bomber ME548, one of 277 bombers, took off from the Royal Air Force base at Killingholme, Lancashire, at 23.50 hours. Their mission was to destroy the railway junction at Hanau, Germany. Among the air crew was Warwick local, William Kenneth Campbell, and what follows is an adventure that would not be out of place in a “Boy’s Own” Annual. A remarkable story of survival, escape and evasion, towards the end of World War 2. William Kenneth Campbell was born in Warwick on March 9th 1915, the second son of Alex and Ada Campbell and was educated at a Warwick Central primary school, and later, Warwick Secondary College, before leaving at the age of 13 to become an apprentice motor mechanic. Bill, as he liked to be called, was an exceptional student with a thirst for technical knowledge that helped him to receive very high accolades with one of the highest passes in Queensland at his trade examination. He learnt to swim so as to become a lifesaver, and easily passed the Royal Lifesaving awards where he eventually became an Examiner of the society. Bill had further ambition which saw him study at night to further his education and matriculated after only 12 months of study, with high enough marks to gain a place in the Faculty of Medicine at Queensland University in 1940. However, his next decision was to be a lifechanging experience when war broke out. So, on the 8th October 1942, Bill enlisted into the Royal Australian Air Force to undergo aircrew training. At this time, England was in desperate need of aircrew, so after all his initial training in Australia Bill was part of the British Empire Air Training Scheme (BETS). His initial training began in Tiger Moth aircraft before graduating to Avro Ansons, at RAAF Flying Schools at Narromine, Bradfield Park and Parkes. On 14th April 1943, Bill and a group of other graduates embarked on board HMT “President Grant” bound for Edmonton, in 14 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES Thursday, 3 September, 2020
Bill Campbell served in RAF Lancasters, from one of which he had an extraordinary escape in the last months of WW2. Canada, arriving on 12th May 1943. Further training as a Bomb Aimer at Winnipeg until October 1943, later, saw Bill on his way to England from Halifax on board the ship “Mauretania”. Attached to the Royal Air Force with 576 Squadron, Bill was sent to North Killingholme in Lincolnshire, to be a part of 550 Squadron and was now promoted to Flying Officer on 12th May 1944, and received training on Lancaster bombers. Bill was trained as a bomb aimer, as at this stage his age went against him as a pilot, but in his usual determined self, Bill adapted to the task and flew his first tour of combat (30 missions) on to targets all over Germany in the next 10 months. It was then that Bill made a decision that would change his life forever and thrust him into an adventure all of its own, when he volunteered to do a further tour of combat duty. On 19th March 1945, 550 Squadron was to be part of a bombing raid on Germany to obliterate the railway junction at Hanau. So, at 23.50 hours, Bill, on his 36th mission, flew off with his crew. which consisted of Flt. Lt. Burrows (Pilot), Sgts. R. C. Smith, R.F. Germain, L. B. Towson, A. Wilson and A. J. Miles. They were part of 277 Lancaster and 8 Mosquito aircraft, that set out on the mission. All
went well as the raid was successfully completed destroying 80% of the town, but as they were returning for home, Bill’s aircraft was hit by a German 109 Night Fighter whose bullets set alight the port wing, forcing the pilot to order the crew to bail out of the burning aircraft. However, Bill found extreme difficulty in removing the escape hatch and only after jumping hard on it, were the crew able to open it and evacuate the aircraft. Lost in the darkness, Bill could not see who had safely parachuted, so concentrated on his own landing in the blackness of the night. On landing safely, Bill used his survival kit with its map and compass to attempt to escape capture. He decided to head west towards the village of Mulheim, hiding in daytime and moving at night. He received some assistance with food and information on the whereabouts of allied units, from some Germans who he suspected were deserters from the army, as American allied troops were now invading Germany. Eventually, Bill was rescued by a unit of the X12 Corps of the United States Army, who took him with them after giving him a Tommy gun for defence. After a week with the U.S. unit Bill was taken to Luxemburg, where he caught up with other surviving members of his crew as they were flown in a Dakota aircraft back to RAF Station
Mont Farm in Oxfordshire, before returning to their base. Unfortunately, Flt. Lt. Burrows and Sgt Towson died when they went down in flames with their aircraft. Bill did not fly again and was sent back to Australia where he received his discharge from the RAAF on 1st August 1946. With his survival and adventurous life behind him Bill felt extremely lucky to escape from his burning aircraft, but was quite excited to be now a member of the famous Caterpillar Club that entitles him to wear the prestigious badge as he certainly earned it. After his discharge in 1946, Bill decided to go back to his university studies, but after his harrowing experiences over Germany, possibly found it hard to get back to full-time study. Finding this not to his liking Bill decided to reinvent himself in to the motor industry and found employment in the technical side. where he was later admitted to membership of the Institution of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineers. In 1947, Bill met a former W.R.A.A.F member Peggy Miles of Brookvale, Sydney and moved back to the Darling Downs residing in Toowoomba where he opened a business of his own as an insurance loss assessor, and operated it under his own name until ill health, apparently war related, which eventually took his life at the relatively young age of 48 on 12th August 1963. He now lies at rest in the Toowoomba General cemetery. A brave heart finally at rest. Men like William Kenneth Campbell are born to make an impact in the society in which they live and Bill certainly did. He survived a war in which 124,000 aircrew members in Bomber Command took part, with 57,205 dead (46%). Each mission must have been psychologically devastating and Bill went above and beyond his calling, by volunteering for a second tour of duty. That is what separates men from their peers when faced with such hazards. Flight Lieutenant William Campbell, I am sure readers of this story salute you for a short life well lived.

Helen’s story ready to tell I Am Woman, Stan Her song touched the hearts of women around the world as they fought for equality back in the early ‘70s and it still resonates today. However the story of Australian singer Helen Reddy is just as enthralling as the women’s movement anthem I Am Woman, itself and is finally being told thanks to director Unjoo Moon (The Zen of Bennett), producer Rosemary Blight and Queensland-born writer Emma Jensen (Mary Shelley). “It’s finally coming out - it’s very exciting,” writer Emma Jenson laughed. “We were set to release in May but as we were heading towards the release this lockdown happened so that changed plans considerably.” Originally intended as a theatrical release I Am Woman now makes it’s way into the wider world (it did play at many of the big film festivals including the prestigious Toronto Film Festival) as a Stan Original - releases on 28 August. “I’m a Stan subscriber and we turned it on just after the announcement and to see the trailer up there was a pretty exciting and proud moment,” she said. Not that Emma hasn’t seen it already - getting the thrill of watching it not only with an audience but with the cast including Tilda Cobham-Hervey (Hotel Mumbai) who plays Helen Evan Peters (American Horror Story:Cult), Jeff Waid and Danielle Macdonald (Dumplin), Lillian Roxon, some of Helen’s family. “I am absolutely thrilled with the movie, I think it really is something we are all very proud of and I feel that when Unjoo, Rosemary and I would have those very early conversations about what we wanted it to be and how we wanted feel and the journey we wanted to

take the audience on - I think we’ve captured that. To have Tilda turn in that performance as Helen - which is absolutely incredible - it genuinely feels like the movie we all set out to tell and that’s a really special thing.” With people becoming increasingly vocal that the gender gap still exists, young women now starting to ask questions about the past and more women telling their stories from that era it feels like it was time Helen’s story was told. “When we set out on the journey (Unjoo and Rosemary were even further along when I came onboard) this had been a discussion point for all of us as women but we couldn’t have predicted what was happening globally in the women’s movement, the Me Too movement as this movie was about to hit,” she said.
“It’s been incredible timing in that respect but I think it certainly felt resonant while we were working on it - the things that Helen would be up against - the things I’d find that I’d be writing Helen saying - those are things women are saying now.” For Emma one of the biggest thrills of finally having the movie out in world is hearing what the younger generations think not only of the movie but of Helen’s story and struggle. “The early feedback from young women, who might have known Helen or perhaps didn’t know of her but knew the song, well they’ve really responded to the story,” Emma said. “She started her career in the States, going over there as a single mother in 1965 which was unheard of.

Well-crafted horror territory Lovecraft Country, Foxtel Showcase, Mondays (various timeslots) Atticus Freeman (Jonathon Majors) is travelling across the US in the 1950s searching for his missing father with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and Uncle George (Courtney V Vance). Along the way he confronts some pretty horrible monsters both human and not so human. The show is based on Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel and is set in a town where famous horror writer HP Lovecraft supposedly based many of his fictional tales (hence the title). With some high-powered producers including JJ Abrams (Star Wars, Star Trek) and Jordon Peele, this is gorgeously atmospheric
and very well realised. It is also a mix of history and horror - the main characters are predominantly African American and they face racism and segregation as much as they face other-wordly creatures. Both are confronting - the racists probably more than the fictional creatures. The acting - even in the face of gore and jump scares - is impressive and like our own Hungry Ghosts (which shone a different light on the Vietnamese War) this is a unique way of approaching a much-talked about part of history. It’s nice to see writers and television makers thinking out of the box bringing thoughtprovoking stories to the masses through a genre you wouldn’t expect (in this case horror). - Tania Phillips

Drama is a German precision operation Biohackers, Netflix Originally due out in April (but held off because some scenes could be misinterpreted as dealing with a pandemic) comes the German techno-thriller Biohackers. Mia Akerlund (Luna Wedler) is a medical student at the University of Freiburg. On the surface she is a normal student - studying biohacking technology under Professor Tanja Lorenz (Jessica Schwarz) and living in a share
“One of the things that attracted me to Helen and her story was just that courage and determination which has carried through her entire career and her life. “I think to be at that time as an Australian woman, going there and saying I’m not going home - that was inspiring. Helen really broke ground for us in the entertainment industry, obviously there were Australian actors there but no-one doing what Helen did. And now in the film and music industry there is a slight rite of passage there - to have that experience Helen paved the way for that. “I knew what that feel was to head overseas with a dream and not a lot of money and the challenges within that - I made a choice to come home, Unjoo lives in LA - moved their very early on - we could all really relate.” She said that, like Helen, the women behind the movie felt Helen’s story, her need to do good work, create songs that were meaningful to her and not become part of a system. - Tania Phillips
house with an interesting mixed bag of characters. But right from the start we know something is up. The opening moments of the first episode have her on a train with a young man called Niklas (Thomas Prenn) when first one woman, then another go into cardiac arrest - it’s all very tense before it moves to Mia starting at the university and it looks like it could be just another going to university coming of age story.
But flashbacks show us that Mia isn’t what she seems - she’s investigating the cause of family tragedies and very much living a shadowy double life. Although at times, Biohackers can’t make up it’s mind if it’s a tense thriller or something lighter, the central performance of Luna Wedler as Mia or Emma is so engaging that you want to see where the story is headed and what she will ultimately choose to do - seek revenge or protect her friends. - Tania Phillips
The Night Clerk is a well-acted but flat and cliched drama about Bart (Tye Sheridan), an autistic hotel clerk who watches guests through hidden cameras. When he witnesses a murder, he cannot aid the investigation without incriminating himself. Sheridan delivers a solid performance as a focused, amiable but stiff young man who wants to connect with others but lacks the cognitive tools, and his posture and physical mannerisms feel very authentic. Lying to protect himself is clearly difficult for Bart, and Sheridan has a riveting monologue in the form of an angry joke, as Bart’s frustration erupts during an interrogation. However, Bart’s characterisation perpetuates media stereotypes about autism; most autistics (speaking as one myself) are not blunt, maladjusted robots. Moreover, most autistics have a clear sense of morality and restraint like anyone else, but the film presents Bart’s invasiveness as innocent, and even heroic toward the end. Bart has sweet chemistry with Andrea (Ana de Armas), but she largely serves as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl: a thinly-written female character designed to pull the male protagonist out of his shell. While Bart undergoes some engaging growth, the narrative carries very little danger or urgency, and the ending is abrupt and unsatisfying. The Night Clerk has an excellent central performance, but it’s lacking in tension and steeped in stereotypes, and is available on DVD and iTunes. - Seth Lukas Hynes Thursday, 3 September, 2020 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES 15

QUAD BIKES ARE HERE TO STAY AT JSI MOTORCYCLES Mojo Motorcycles Pty Ltd., the Australian distributor for CFMOTO, has released a new 400cc quad bike that complies with stage 2 of the Australian Government mandatory Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard. The Australian Government announced the introduction of the Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard in October 2019. This standard is being introduced over two stages. The requirements under stage 1 must be met by October 11th 2020, and the requirements under stage 2 by October 11th 2021. Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard The mandatory legislation applies to all new ‘general-use’ quad bike models sold in Australia. Below is an overview of the new requirements. Full details are outlined by Product Safety Australia and by the Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard legislation (references listed at the end). Stage 1 requires all quad bikes to meet either US or EU quad bike standards. All models are required to undergo static
stability testing for both lateral and longitudinal tilt angles and lastly, all quad bikes are required to have a new notification label affixed and details outlined in the owner’s manual alerting the operator to the risk of a rollover. Stage 2 includes all of stage 1 requirements plus all quad bikes must be fitted with an Operator Protection Device (OPD) or have one integrated into the vehicles design. All quad bikes must meet minimum lateral stability and longitudinal stability tilt angles to be stage 2 compliant. Mojo Motorcycles Transition Strategy Over the next three months, Mojo Motorcycles will be introducing an updated range of CFMOTO quad bikes that meet stage 2 requirements of the Consumer Goods (Quad Bike) Safety Standard. The entire CFMOTO quad bike range will be updated to meet the requirements of stage 2 by October 2020 - one year ahead of the mandatory timeline. “We want to reassure Aussie farmers that CFMOTO quad bikes are here to stay,” said Mojo Motorcycles Director, Michael Poynton. “By introducing a new quad bike
range that complies with stage 2 of the Consumer Goods Quad Bike Safety Standard requirements by October 2020, one year ahead of the mandatory timeline, shows our commitment to remain in the Australian market. Following our own assessment of the Consumer Goods (quad bikes) Safety Standard in 2019, we made the decision to remain in the Australian market with CFMOTO quad bikes”. The decision to release an updated model range one year in advance of the mandatory regulation is to help execute a smoother transition for CFMOTO customers and Dealers. To ensure all CFMOTO quad bikes are stage 2 compliant by October 2020, Mojo Motorcycles will be working closely with their Dealer network to supply the required items to meet the standard, including Quadbar OPDs. This will mean that all CFMOTO quad bikes sold in Australia from October 2020 will be fitted with a Quadbar OPD. About CFMOTO Australia CFMOTO is distributed in Australia by Mojo
Motorcycles Pty Ltd., a 100% Australian owned company. Established in 2003, Mojo Motorcycles have grown to be one of the largest privatelyowned motorcycle distributors in Australia, with annual retail sales volumes now exceeding 5000 units across their brands. Introduced in Australia by Mojo Motorcycles in 2005, CFMOTO quad bikes and utility vehicles (UTVs) have recorded tremendous sales growth and is now a brand trusted by more than 25,000 Aussie farmers. New CFORCE 400 EPS Mojo Motorcycles is pleased to introduce the new CFORCE 400 EPS as the first stage 2 complaint CFMOTO quad bike available for sale in Australia. Based on the proven 400cc platform, the CFORCE 400 EPS is loaded with work ready features including selectable 2WD/4WD, electronic power steering (EPS), alloy wheels, winch and an Australian made Quadbar OPD. The new CFORCE 400 EPS is available now from your local Dealer for the ride away price of $7990.

Rural Links Bid for a great cause By Casey O’Connor Sale preparations are currently being finalised and the draft of 45 Angus Bulls are presenting extremely well and are a credit to the Wise family and the staff at Glenisa on the Southern Downs. Through the generosity of the Wise families, there will be an added element to this year’s Glenisa Angus Bull Sale, with the family throwing their support behind two very worthwhile and important charities - Protea Place in Toowoomba and HADA (Health and Development Aid Abroad). Each supports vulnerable women - one on the Darling Downs the other in Africa and Asia. There are few things closer to the hearts of Glenisa Angus Stud principal Ced Wise’s daughter, Jess Galvin (Wise) and his daughter in-law, Dr Rachel Wise, than family, their careers, Glenisa and the respective charities they support through their individual expertise. At this year’s Bull Sale, producers will also have the opportunity to support these charities by bidding for Lot 27, Glenisa Jimbob P184. Every dollar from the sale of the son of Glenisa’s successful sire DSK RR Jimbob will be split between these two remarkable charities. Every dollar will go directly towards providing a simple meal, chat, roof over head or life saving surgery to the vulnerable women the charities support. Jessica Galvin, a wife, mother of two and Director of JG Audit and Assurance explained Protea Place Toowoomba is a vital and unique support centre for women. Since it was established in 2019 - with no government funding - Protea Place has forged an important footprint in the area. It provides far ranging support for single women who may be experiencing homelessness or living in unsafe environments. In addition to access to counselling services, case management support to secure safe housing and many other services. Protea Place is not a DFV service, however for many of the women seeking help, domestic violence is often a contributing factor to their current circumstances. The organisation focuses on single women, many over the age of 50. “Protea Place also offers many of the simple things often for taken granted,” Jess Galvin said. “Things like showers, laundry, a hot meal, clothing, toiletries, support and a safe haven during the day. “The work of Protea Place is only possible thanks to the generosity of community support.” Dr Rachel Wise divides her time between
Dr Rachel Wise (far left) is pictured with a group of women in Kasese, Uganda, while working with Health and Development Aid Abroad. HADA is one of two charities that will benefit from the proceeds of Lot 27 at the upcoming Glenisa Angus Sale. the Gold Coast Hospital where she works in her chosen field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and her home base Glenisa with husband Adam Wise. Rachel is passionate about the work of HADA. In the recent past, Rachel has had hands-on experience with a medical training project in Africa and Asia. The program provides much-needed surgery for women in areas like Uganda who have suffered severe injuries due to birth trauma. “Many of these women are often socially isolated and ostracized from family due to their condition,” Dr Wise said. “The HADA project also provides funding for transport, food and accommodation as well as covering all medical expenses and requirements.
“In addition, training is provided for local staff as well as supplying medical equipment to local districts”. Both women are passionate supporters of these charities and urge producers to strongly consider bidding for Lot 27. They say the outcome will be a win-win situation. The successful bidder will be taking home a bull that will enhance their herd and ultimately benefit the bottom line of their business. At the same time, no price can be put on the benefit the contribution of the sale proceeds will make to a number of less fortunate women. The Glenisa Bull Sale will be held at the Glenisa on-farm sale facilities, Townsend Road, Glen Aplin on Thursday 10 September commencing at 12 noon and interfaced with

Enquiry a “small dividend” The Australian dairy industry’s efforts to hold supermarkets accountable as part of the 2017/18 ACCC Dairy Inquiry has paid a small dividend today when the Federal Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud announced an investigation into the bargaining power imbalances across the perishable goods sector which would look at all the relationships between farmers, processors and retailers. The inquiry will also consider the effectiveness of the Government’s new Mandatory Dairy Code of Conduct launched in January this year, and whether it should be extended to supermarkets and other retailers. The Code is designed to address the power imbalance within the dairy supply chain, but currently only refers to the supply arrangements between processors and dairy farmers. As the agricultural sector has seen so many times in the past, the rules do not apply to supermarkets. In the final report released in 2018, the ACCC stated: “that increases in the supermarket price of private label milk are unlikely to increase the farmgate prices received by farmers, unless farmers have improved bargaining power in their negotiations with processors.” Today’s announcement is the next phase of improving the bargaining position for farmers. QDO President, Brian Tessmann said,
David Littleproud.
“The power imbalance that occurs between the supermarkets and the processors of perishable goods is real and has been going on for decades.” “When your product has a short shelf life, retailers have you over a barrel.” “You can’t hold on to it and wait to get a better price, and you can’t dump it [because of EPA laws]. So, whether the product is sitting in your paddock or in packed up in a processing plant, the power is not with you. It’s with the retailers responsible for getting your product into the hands of the consumer.” “When you put it like that it makes no sense that supermarkets are not being held accountable.” “Processors and farmers have had their relationship put under a microscope for the betterment of the whole [dairy] industry. The Code provides for greater accountability and transparency which ultimately should make it fairer for all. We hope that this review leads to the inclusion of supermarkets in the next round of reviews of the Mandatory Dairy Code of Conduct and thank Minister Littleproud for pushing for more reform of the supply chains. “This review is very welcome but this time we want to see real change to address the clear imbalance of power in the agricultural supply chain” said Mr Tessmann.
‘Small Farms Grants’ open Farmers, fishers and foresters can now apply for Australian Government funding of up to $100,000 to support their natural resource management efforts. Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud said applications for Round 4 of Smart Farms Small Grants are now open. “This is a hugely popular program that provides a real bang for buck when it comes to delivering benefits for farms, the environment and local communities,” Mr Littleproud said. “Aussie farmers not only produce the best food and fibre in the world, but they are also our greatest environmentalists. “Our farmers have always looked after the land and through these grants we can give them a helping hand to adopt the next generation of sustainable farming practices. “There is $6.5 million available under this round of Smart Farms Small Grants to support one- to two-year projects that boost best practice sustainable farming awareness, skills and capacity. “We’re looking for projects across a range of areas such as pest control, vegetation management, farm input efficiency, climate and
market management, and the use of new technologies.” “Previous rounds of this program have delivered benefits across the length and breadth of the country— from Indigenous fishers and aquaculturalists in Cape York to pistachio growers in Robinvale, Victoria. I want to continue that trend and get innovative practices out on the ground and delivering real benefits to our farmers.” For more information and to apply, visit the Community Grants Hub https://www.communitygrants.gov.au/grants Fast Facts ... Smart Farms Small Grants support projects that address a range of natural resource management issues including soil health, pest and weed management, farm production efficiency, Indigenous involvement, climate and market risk and use of new technologies to improve sustainable practices. Projects may be delivered locally, regionally and multi-regionally and must be completed by 30 June 2023. A total of $43.5 million is available for Smart Farms Small Grants from 2017-18 to 2022-23.

The value of Australian agricultural exports reached $50.1 billion in 2019/20 - the second most valuable year on record - despite a yearon-year decline of $601.4 million, according to Rural Bank’s Australian Agriculture Trade 2019/20 report. The slight decline marks the end of nine years of consecutive growth but shows the resilience in the value of agricultural exports in the face of drought and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Export values remained within the $49.9 to $50.7 billion range over the past three years. China accounted for 30.3 per cent of total export value, continuing to be the critical market for Australian agriculture. Australia’s top five export markets were China, Japan, the United States, South Korea and Indonesia. In 2019/20, China overtook Japan for the first time to become the top market for Australian beef, partly filling a protein gap caused by the outbreak of African Swine Fever.
Following the imposition of tariffs on barley, farmers will continue to closely monitor the relationship between Australia and China with further sanctions likely to affect agricultural and viticultural exports. Rural Bank Chief Operating Officer, Will Rayner, said all states except Western Australia recorded growth in the value of agricultural exports but seasonal conditions and the global recovery from COVID-19 will be the two key factors for the remainder of 2020/21. “Australian agricultural exports continue to be strong despite COVID-19, and in most states agricultural export values are forecast to grow,” he said. “This demonstrates the remarkable reliability of Australian food and fibre exports.” To view the full Rural Bank Australian Agriculture Trade 2019/20 report, visit: www.ruralbank.com.au/trade

New feedlot approved Goondiwindi Regional Council conditionally approved the development of a cattle feedlot of up to 999 standard cattle units (SCU) on Scudamores Road in Goondiwindi at its August meeting last week. In a statement a council spokesman said the application site “is in the designated rural zone of the Goondiwindi Region Planning Scheme, and cattle feedlots can only be approved within this zoning”. “As the approval could be conditioned in accordance with the Planning Scheme, Council found no grounds to refuse the application,” the spokesman said. “Goondiwindi Regional Council chose to require all applications for ‘Intensive Animal Industries’ such as feedlots to undergo an impact assessment under its Planning Scheme. “Impact assessments are the highest level of assessment available, and allow Council to take into consideration the entire Planning Scheme, including the zoning of the land and its proposed impacts on neighbours and oth-
er interested parties. “There were 40 conditions associated with the approval, including requirements to mitigate potential nuisances such as dust, noise and odour, site access and overall management of the development. “Concerns around such potential nuisances are also addressed through standard conditions of the Queensland Government’s Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Environmental Authority and will be subject to ongoing monitoring by the State. “Council’s role in the approval of development applications is to ensure that conditions are fair and reasonable for all - and consistent with the Planning Scheme. “It also ensures that, as much as possible, the concerns of neighbours and the local environment are addressed. “The decision may be appealed to the Planning and Environment Court by the applicant and each properly made submitter (objector or supporter).”
Egg supply chain boost Federal Agriculture Minister and Maranoa MP David Littleproud says egg supply chain integrity is being enhanced through an Australian Government-backed project that supports farmers to adopt a consistent approach to traceability. Mr Littleproud said Australian Eggs Ltd is using $325,200 in Traceability Grants Program funding to develop a software tool and educational material. “The project will deliver a simple way for farmers to support on-farm egg accounting as well as provide a mechanism for supply chain traceability,” Mr Littleproud said. “A series of workshops in every state and territory will guide farmers in the use of the tool and explain the benefits enhanced traceability has for them and the industry. “These workshops will also provide communication materials to farmers to help educate their customers about the safety and premium quality of Aussie eggs. “It’s important all links in the egg supply chain are aware of the critical relationship traceability has with consumer trust and market opportunities. “Eggs are a regular part of the diet for millions of Australians. We consume about 17.2 million of them every day. “In a global market where premium food commands a premium price, trust is our greatest asset. “A trade-level communications strategy will identify key influencers inside retailers, food distributors, food service and food manufacturing and test key messages with them. “Egg farmers recognise that traceability delivers consistently high food safety and product integrity outcomes”, Rowan Mc-
Australians consume more than 17 million eggs every day. And don’t forget the bacon from our top-quality local producers. Monnies, Managing Director of Australian Eggs said. “This project will enhance our traceability systems and enable the industry to meet its promise to Australian egg consumers.” This project is being supported by the NSW, Qld and WA state governments and Egg Farmers of Australia which has a database of 450 egg producers.

Apples - a rich history
When newly married I lived in the Mudgee area of NSW and my wonderful father in law had a great orchard on the banks of the creek. Several varieties of apples grew there, old fashioned green Delicious and crispy red Johnathon, an early maturing variety with pure white flesh, crisp and juicy - still one of my favourites and rarely available these days. They were wonderful for Toffee Apples! Of course there were several Granny smith trees and these kept us in cooking apples well into the winter stored in a concrete room under the tank stand. If we did run short, it wasn’t far to Orange which, despite its name, was a large apple growing area!

My parents shifted to Tasmania and the Huon Valley on their retirement and helped on an apple orchard there for several years and a whole new range of varieties entered my vocabulary. Golden Delicious was a particular favourite but there were many different ones. Cox’s Pippin, Gravenstein, Rome Beauty and Bramley are just some that I remember. When Dad was in Tasmania the majority of the crop was exported to England and this lasted until England joined the EEC. New destinations had to be found and Japan is where a lot of apples go these days. Their requirements and tastes differ so new
varieties have been bred to fill these markets. These days we see Jazz, Pink Ladies, Fuji and a whole new range. Apples are not native to Japan but are a taste that has developed over the years. Apparently apples, these days, are not meant to be eaten straight from the tree as they have been bred to be stored. With storage the acidity drops and the starch in the flesh changes to sugar. The experts tell me that when you buy apples from the shop they are ready to be eaten and should not be stored in a fruit bowl on the bench. Apparently you should definitely not keep them near bananas as they will quickly become over ripe ... I certainly am guilty of this! My fruit bowl usually has apples, oranges and bananas on top - oops! The expert advice is to keep them in the crisper in the fridge until you are ready to eat them. At present the apple trees are starting to bloom around Stanthorpe so the orchards should look spectacular for about the next month and we will be praying that the frosts are finished and the fruit will set unhindered. We are so fortunate to live in such a productive region. Don’t forget the annual Garden Competition, Spring Flower Show and Floral Window Competition all coming up in October. Schedules are available from Bryson’s Place in Palmerin Street. Pick one up and see what you can enter.

I recently read an article about the death of what was supposedly the oldest apple tree in America. It was reportedly 194 years old and had been grown from 5 seeds given to a young pioneer from the apples in a dessert on the night he left England for the “New World. When he arrived he planted them at Fort Vancouver, Washington and it gave rise to the flourishing industry in the area. It was a green apple, fairly sour but ideal for baking. Genetic testing has determined that it was unique and no other existed exactly like it but may have been a descendant of the 500 year old variety “French Reinette. This had led me to wonder about the history and varieties grown in the Stanthorpe area. So many beautiful apples grown on our doorstep and I have no idea when and how the orchards originated or where to find the information. I knew apples were brought here with the first fleet and that Granny Smith originated in Australia in 1868 and thought to be a hybrid of the European wild apple. It is named after Maria Ann Smith. However, Google is my friend, and I found an article about Thulimbah and apples from 1924 extolling the virtues of the area for orchards and vegetable farms. In 1908 the local member Col. J. F. G. Foxton, saw the potential and urged people to take up farms in the area. His recommendations did not go unheeded and by the time the article was written the area was thriving.

SPORT
Casey O’Connor
Social media changes? It has been a torrid rugby league season for Broncos’ supporters with Coach Anthony Seibold finally falling on his sword in the past week. While results on the field have been appalling and fall squarely at the door of the former coach, there are other circumstances that contributed to the end of his tenure that raise more questions than answers. You have to wonder if sport in this country has crossed the Rubicon when the coach of an underperforming football club is the subject of such a vitriolic and personal attack. The vile and untruthful rumour and innuendos eventually had a profound effect on not only the coach but also his family. Is this what sport in Australia has come to? On field performances such as we have seen from the Broncos ultimately raise the question, “Is the coach the right man for the job” and that is fair enough. Social media however gives everyone the ability to share their opinions, comments criticisms and uncensored personal attacks. Even in this age of social media, as far as we know, no rugby league coach has ever been the target of such a vicious and sustained attack designed to influence a club to remove the incumbent. Prior to Seibold’s departure, four NRL coaches had already been shown the door in 2020. None endured the level of attack aimed at Seibold. It is never a happy time when a coach is relieved of his duties and separating fact from fiction and hysteria can often be difficult but those who engage in cyber bullying need to be called out. Too often they are never held to account and are able to fly under the radar behind their keyboards in a state of anonymity. That may be about to change as social media attacks become more prevalent and more personal. Former NRL star Mark Geyer and his daughter are pursuing those responsible for an attack on them. NRL presenter, Erin Molan is also taking the same path. I applaud Seibold for the steps he has taken to unmask the perpetrators in his case - all done at his own expense. Should it have been left to Seibold personally to shoulder the expense or should the NRL have become involved earlier is another question? From the outside it certainly appears that Seibold was hung out to dry with not a great deal of support. No matter what you think of Anthony Seibold and his coaching ability, he handled his exit from the club with dignity and neither he nor his family deserved to go through the trauma these attacks caused. As a nation of sport tragics we are passionate about the football code we follow and tribal in our support for out chosen team. I certainly hope the attacks Seibold endured do not become accepted as the norm. We are better than that. - Casey
‘JT’ COUNTDOWN... There is an air of excitement in Stanthorpe Schools following the SDRC announcement last week that NRL superstar Johnathan Thurston will visit them on Tuesday, 20 October. Thurston will be speaking to Stanthorpe Primary and High School and St Joseph’s Primary and Secondary students about building resilience, perseverance in the face of great difficulty, as well as how to take care of yourself so that you can take care of others. Mayor Vic Pennisi said the visit will be “about highlighting resilience, adaptability, and the stalwart nature of the youngest members of our community”.
‘’JT’’ is set to give Stanthorpe students the benefit of his tips for resilience...a true legend. “The students of our region have already dealt with severe drought, bushfire, and now a pandemic,” Cr Pennisi said. “Our young people have shown a level of resilience well beyond their years and I think it is important that they are recognised and supported by their role models. “Johnathan has a reputation for respecting and supporting those around him as much as his athletic ability. “Having someone like Johnathan speak about being flexible in the face adversity will be timely - the hard part for many will be waiting until 20 October, but that’s a pretty good problem to have.”
THERE’LL NEVER BE ANOTHER As legends go in Australian racing we have Phar Lap and of course in the modern era Reckless and Phar Lap’s strapper Tommy Woodcock. Then there are the girls, Makybe Diva, Black Caviar and of course the Queen herself Winx who by the end of her racing career belonged not to her owners but the nation. However, there has never been a horse like Subzero, nor will there ever be another “Subbie”. Jockey Greg Hall, trainer Lee Freedman and Subzero won the race that stops a nation in 1992 but amazingly that was only the start of Subbie’s remarkable journey. Rarely does a horse become more loved in retirement than during his career even after winning a Melbourne Cup. Subbie was that horse. When the Cup winner was retired he began life-long association with VRC Clerk of the Course, Graham Salisbury. Salisbury went on to buy Subbie for $1 with the goal to make him the “the people’s horse”. He became that and so much more. On Saturday Subbie, aged 32, nudged opened the gate to the big paddock in the sky and galloped off to join his mate Salisbury. Salisbury lost his long battle with cancer on Saturday June 20 at 2.38pm and two months later on Saturday 29 August also at 2.38pm Subbie succumbed to heart failure. Salisbury’s family say the pair were two peas in a pod to the end say. Lee Freedman said from his base in Singapore on Saturday night, “Graham saw something in that horse, no-one else could.” His former jockey Greg Hall said he had only checked in on Subbie last Thursday and was numb when he heard the news. Some horse trainers get the best out of their horses on the track but what Salisbury and Subbie achieved was nothing short of amazing.
Subbie, the People’s champion - with the late Graham Salisbury - an unbreakable bond right until the end. Hardened racing types melted, kids loved him, the faces of the elderly he visited in nursing homes lit up with excitement. The right man found the right horse to take on an amazing journey. They went to schools, nursing homes, shopping centres. In and out of doors and places no horse has any right to visit. Graham taught him tricks - to respond to questions, to bow to his adoring public. What Salisbury did not teach Subbie or could not explain was the horse’s innate understanding of the sick. At the bedside of a dying child the big grey was a gentle giant. He was known to nuzzle his big grey head into a hand or cheek as if trying to ease pain and suffering. Always leaving patients with a forever happy moment. Subbie, won hearts, created smiles, brought tears, and then so much more. A gentle horse, inquisitive and kind. Fittingly Subbie’s ashes will be scattered on Flemington racecourse Let’s hope the VRC acknowledges both Subbie and Salisbury with a permanent reminder of their legacy. A memorial in keeping with his stature as the People’s Champion. Subbie - An amazing horse; perhaps racing’s best ambassador ever.
WHO’S THE SUPER COACH NOW Warwick’s own super coach Phil Economides was spotted on the practice range taking a few lessons with Warwick Pro Sam Eaves. They must have been excellent lessons. On Saturday Economides came out and beat a field of 60 players in the Single Stableford. He turned around some recent ordinary form with the clubs to record 39 points claiming a two-shot win over runner up Michael Watt. It begs the question - is Sam the new “Super Coach”? In the ball run-down Rhys Farrell and the in-form Evan Pfeffer recorded 37 points. Another in-form player Mal Galloway returned 36 along with Eddie Kemp and Al Matthews. Brendan Landrigan and Scott McLennan both
had 35 points. Saturday also saw the welcome return of the nearest the pin shots on the par three holes. Pin shots went to Peter Boney on the fifth and the 11th. Scott McLennan was on song at the seventh, Dave Speedy the ninth and Doug Wilson on the 16th. The propin saw Doug Wilson up to his old tricks winning four balls, Scott McLennan three, Evan Pfeffer, Ross Bell and Mark Thomas two each and Charlie Morrison a ball. A reminder that the match play championships begin shortly. Nominations close at 6pm this Saturday so please nominate in your respective grades if you haven’t already done so. The seeded draw will take place on Sunday and be posted on the clubhouse board early next week. Players in all three grades are looking forward to this important championship. Special mention to the winner of the previous week’s Single Stableford. Neville Heard (just a few days short of his 80th birthday) paid scant attention to the gusty conditions that many found difficult and returned a winning score of 39 points. He beat runner up, Jamie Ollerton by one shot. Congratulation Neville. You have every reason to be proud of that performance which may well see your handicap reduce a little
WILSON AND PFEFFER WINNERS The final of the Warwick Men’s 4BBB Handicap Matchplay event was decided recently. In what was a bit of an upset result, Doug Wilson and Evan Pfeffer had a four and three win over Sean Haynes and Ben Brownlie. The pairs were all square after the first 18 holes but the more senior team combined well on the next nine holes. They grabbed a lead and held on to it to claim the win.. Congratulations to the winners for a tournament well played. Their names will now be added to the honour board for the event. Continued next page Thursday, 3 September, 2020 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES 29

GOOD CONDITIONS AT LAST Bowlers at the Southern Cross Club finally enjoyed some good conditions Thursday when the ladies hosted another great casual afternoon of mixed bowls. 30 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES Thursday, 3 September, 2020
Joe Torrisi, Cate Gardner and Steve Tyter combined to score the greatest margin and take home the prizes. It was a double whammy for Joe who also won the lucky door prize. Twenty-six bowlers were on the green on Saturday. The best performance coming from Daphne Cross and Dave Scotney. The pair scored very well in the first two games and did enough in the third to take home the cash. Roger Cavanagh with “Crazy” himself, Clark Davidson somehow got themselves into the runners-up stall. There is a call for swabs to be taken next time it happens. Was it the shot of the day or was it the ABC of bowls (A#$and Beats Class) everyone was asking after Sue Dipplesman pulled off a remarkable shot. Her playing partner Chris Sawyer asked Sue if she was could knock out the opposition’s bowl to come up with four shots. MARATHON RECORD This is a little known record associated with the Olympic marathon. During the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Japanese athlete Shizo Kanakuri abandoned the marathon but failed to notify race officials. They considered him missing until 1967, when they found he was alive. He was offered the opportunity to complete his run, which he accepted and completed the marathon in 54 years, eight months, six days, five hours, 32 minutes and 20.3 seconds. Now there’s a record even I could beat.
DISTRICT PAIRS DECIDED What a difference a week makes. The finals of the Men’s District Pairs were played Saturday and Sunday in perfect weather and on a green running very well and as a result there was some great games. On Saturday morning Rod Newlands and Jamie Zamprogno (The Summit) had a comfortable 25-17 win over Brad Smith and Gary Roberts (Inglewood and Goondiwindi). Frank Taylor and Mick Mills (The Summit) proved too strong for John Graham and John Fairley (The Summit and Stanthorpe) winning 34-11. Summit bowlers, Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert (The Summit) had a big win over Goondiwindi opponents Frank Woods and George Sloss. The final score 31 - 7 Michael O’Leary and Peter Gynther of Tannymorel continued their good recent form with a narrow 18-17 win over Darren Stanley and Rob Capelli The semi finals followed on Saturday afternoon Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert had a 25-15 win over Frank Taylor and Mick Mills In second semi Rod Newlands and Jamie -Zamprogno just held on to beat Michael O’Leary and Peter Gynther 24-22. This was the game of the day with Rod and Jamie leading 22 to 11 after 13 ends. Michael and Peter fought back to trail by 23 - 22 coming into the final end. They held shot until the final few bowls in what was a thrilling finish. Because both finalists were from The Summit the final was played at The Summit on Sunday. Carl Sutherland and Tony Schubert led 14-6 after 13 ends. Their opponents Rod Capelli and Jamie Zamprogno lifted their
game to trail 14-12 after 17 ends. The final four ends were keenly contested with all bowlers playing great conversion shots Sutherland and Schubert managed to play the shots that hurt and scored a single shot on each of these ends to take out the District pairs 18 - 12. Congratulations to the winners who played consistently all weekend and Rod and Jamie who were worthy runners up. The club would like to thank Mick, Frank, Graeme and Peter for the work done to present the greens in such wonderful condition. Thanks to Graeme for umpiring and District President Bryce for umpiring and presenting the badges on Sunday. The ladies also did a great job catering for everyone. Social bowls were played on Saturday. In Game one Margaret Harvey, Rocky Thompson and Dale Callaghan defeated Sylean Fairley, John Fairley and Ray Spiller22-12 In Game two Artie Zamprogno, Elana Scott and Brian Wilmot proved too strong for Todd Jones, Barry Murphy and Cliff Jones - the score 33-7. This Saturday (5 September) First Division Pennants - Southern Cross - Social Bowls at the Summit Sunday (6 September) Final First Division Pennant - Second Division Pennant - The Summit
REDBACKS RED HOT Stanthorpe United continued their recent winning streak thumping Highfields sevennil thumping at the weekend. It did not take long for the return of Brad Thompson to pay dividends. Twenty minutes into the game he set up Andy Crestani from close range. Shortly after, another sublime pass from Thompson found Simon Mascadri and with a great finish to the move United had raced away to a twonil lead which remained the score at the halftime break. The Redbacks were in red-hot form in the second half. Mascadri returned favour shortly after the break with a brilliant pass for Thompson who scored his first goal. Two perfect headers from Aiden Halford off corner kicks found the back of the net and the score was four-nil.

Casey O’Connor A goal to sub Aiden Fox followed not long after. United Captain Matt Purcell provided Thompson with his second goal. The sevennil score could have been greater but for some magnificent saves by the Highfields keeper. The squad travel to Toowoomba on Tuesday night in a must win game against top four team USQ. It will be a tough game and most players will have worked all day and then travelled to Toowoomba. Unfortunately, the result will be too late for this edition of Spin. The team will be looking forward to their bye this weekend.
COURT RESURFACING TO BEGIN
INSPIRATIONAL OCTOGENARIAN
BIG TEST FOR UNBEATEN RATS
A big shout out to Toby Dempster who, at the age of 87 years young, is setting off this week to complete what he calls his “commemorative” bike ride. Toby is as fanatical about motor bikes as he is about cricket and plans to retrace a journey he took with three mates back in his teenage age years - well almost. Seventy years ago Toby and his mates rode from Stanthorpe to Cape York. With a small group fellow riders (younger) this inspirational octogenarian will only ride 1800 klms this time around. He is only going as far as Cairns. Of course then he then has to turn around and ride all the way back to Stanthorpe. We wish you good riding weather and safe travels Toby.
The Warwick Water Rats are enjoying a purple patch of form this season and after thumping USQ 55-5 at the weekend they remain undefeated in the 2020 season. The win justified the confidence Rats coach Vlad Savovski’s had in his troops prior to the game. It was an impressive performance against USQ. The Rats sit three points behind defending premiers St George who have played one game more and are also undefeated. The Coach was impressed with his team’s performance in the second half against USQ. In previous week’s the team has tended to go away from their structure and game plan but on Saturday they stuck to the plan and the points flowed. This weekend however the Rats face their toughest assignment yet when they take on St George on their home patch. The Rats expect to be down on numbers with some key players unable to make the road trip. However, the coach has great faith in the players who will be available and expects that whoever is on the paddock will dig in and have a go. The Rats have played and beaten St George with under strength sides in the past so they know they can win. A reminder that as the season heads towards the final, the Water Rats gala Ladies Day will be held at Rison Oval on 12 September. It is also the Rats final home game of the season and organisers are hoping for a bumper crowd. So mark 12 September, the Spring Soiree in your diary and head to Risdon Oval for a great day pout and support the Little Windmills: the Country Kids Charity and of course the Warwick Water Rats.
COLTS LOOSE THEIR UNDEFEATED STATUS An under-strength Warwick Wolves colts team lost their first game of the season against St Albans last Saturday three-one. With four experienced players unavailable through sickness, the Colts took the field with no substitutes available against second placed St Albans. Despite the lack of experience some of the younger players really stood up. Mark Skinner had a strong game in the unfamiliar position in the centre of the defence. Hunter Murphy tried hard at right fullback. Noah Dwan scored a great goal out speeding the defence after a great pass from Harry Whittaker created a one on one with the St Albans keeper. Wolves held the one-nil lead until mid-way through the second half when St Albans scored found the back of the net after their first shot was blocked by keeper Joey Brown. the Wolves a little too slow to react to the rebound and paid the price. Poor marking from a St Albans corner kick provided an easy header to give St Albans their second goal and the lead. A controversial penalty decision followed soon resulting in a goal and taking the score to three-one. Harry Whittaker was the best for Wolves with hard work and searching runs from midfield. His brother Byron also played well. Noah Dwan was another who played strongly with Mark Skinner providing good support.
WORKING HARD FOR JAMWORKS GOODIES The end of month 4BBB Stableford at Stanthorpe Golf Club on Saturday was the medley 4BBB Stableford sponsored by Jamworks Gourmet Foods. Several groups familiar with Jamworks were keen to get a win and take home some of the sponsor’s goodies and competition was intense. The team of Lyle Bryant and Barry Hughes scored 47 which earned them the Jamworks goodies. They pair combined well and had only had bad hole of one point. Hughes was the mainstay of the team recording a straight back nine of 24 points to add to the front nine of 23 points. His playing partner, Bryant, added to the score when needed. On each occasion adding three points to the tally. In the same group as the winners was the team of Scott Constable and Aaron Simmers who returned a final score of 44 points to claim runner up rights. They managed to push the winners all the way but a dropped shot here and there made the difference in the end. They ended up with scores of 22 points out and 22 points back. Four groups, Lyn and Trevor Ludlow, Travis Burton and Hayden Smith, Tom Page and Wes Smith and Nikki Waterworth and Mick O’Brien finished with a score of 42 points which entitled each to a run down. This week play is for the September monthly medal and putting competitions. Players only have two medal
The Stanthorpe Tennis Association recently held a general meeting in their clubhouse after social games. In preparation for the resurfacing of the Lock Street courts the club has paid a deposit to a court construction company to re-surface a new court. Work is expected to begin shortly and should be completed during September. The club will use their grant funding to pay the balance when the work is completed.
Octogenarian, Toby Dempster prepares to head off this week on an on an 1800klm ride events remaining to qualify for this year’s Medal of Medallists event in November. Competitive play is promised this weekend with a teeoff at 11am and there is a time sheet is on the board at the club.
AGM HERALDS CHANGE The Stanthorpe Golf Club recently held their AGM and there are several major changes to the makeup of the committee. Most notably Stephen Kay has stepped down from the President’s position and Richard Reardon also steps away from his role as Club Captain. Both have provided great leadership and input to the club during their terms of office. In sometimes difficult circumstances they have both done a wonderful job and it is a credit to both. The club is fortunate to have long-time member Len Leigh step into the President’s role. It is great to see one of the younger members of the club, Brendan Barker accepting a leadership role taking over as Club Captain.

GALLOWAY SCORES SPORTERS WIN On Wednesday(26 August), a big field of Warwick Sporters and visitors teed off in the August Betta Home Living trophy. The group welcomed back Stephen Bell son of Loin King who was visiting. Mal Galloway returned the winning score of 37 points just in advance of runner up Trevor King (36 points). Ball rundown: Charlie Morrison (36); Herb Bounds, the Loin King, Eddie Big Cods, Peter Walsh and Garry Two Names (35); Mick Banks and Richard Shewell(34). Finishing with 33 points were Gunter Nicklich, Bob Lester, Greg Wallace, Garry Hanson ( someone check his input!) and Michael Hoskin. This week Sporters played in the September pro shop-sponsored stroke event. Look for results in next week’s Spin. Next week Sporters will play for the Warwick Hotel trophy. It appears spring has finally sprung and hopefully the pesky westerlies have left us.
Sporters members are reminded that the Red Rooster Rumble, sponsored by Neil and Sam McCosker has been revamped under the watchful eye of Sam the Pro. There are some interesting variations to tee positions for this fun social nine-hole comp on a Friday. With the clubhouse now open, it is a great way to spend a couple of hours followed by a cool libation on a Friday afternoon. The golf thought for the week for our slower golfers - “Move just quickly enough to stop people thinking you are dead.”
SPRING HAS SPRUNG WHEN..... You know spring has sprung when the nominations for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup are released. Racing Victoria is pleased with the numbers and the quality of the nominations, which include 39 from overseas marauders chasing the Melbourne Cup, and 34 looking to take home the Caulfield Cup. Who knows how many will actually arrive on 2 October. The result of racing in England, Ireland and France in the next couple of weeks will play a big part. playing a key role in decision making. There is also a bigger than usual contingent of Australian horses headed of course by last year’s winner Vow and Declare In other early Spring Racing news, connections of the recent Group II York Stakes winner, Aspetar are working through stable staff quarantine protocols. The horse believed to be a certain starter in the centenary Cox Plate. How the Cups and the entire Spring Racing Carnival pan out in 2020 is anyone guess. The easiest part might be picking a Cup winner and that says a lot about how difficult things might be.
GREAT CONDITIONS In spite of the wind the Stanthorpe weather has been great for bowls over the past week.
