‘Bullish’ market forecast By Jeremy Sollars

Cattle - and sheep and lamb - numbers at Warwick have fluctuated in recent times but cattle prices are showing consistent strength, at least for the time being. sales to 440 cents per kilo. “Heavy weight yearling steers made to 414 cents to average 387 cents per kilo.” One sale does not a season make but current prices may be the local reflection of what Rabobank at least sees as a ‘bullish’ start to the spring-summer period in our region. “Optimism among the state’s beef sector buoyed by strong cattle prices and favourable seasonal conditions - has seen Queensland rural confidence edge higher over the past quarter,” a Rabobank spokesman said. “While confidence among Queensland farmers was still well short of the early year highs recorded in quarter one this year, optimism was slowly returning after a mid-year fall in sentiment. “The latest survey, completed last month, revealed that while just over half of the surveyed farmers - 51 per cent - expected agricultural economic conditions to remain relatively unchanged over the coming year, those anticipating conditions to worsen had eased back from last survey to 20 per cent (from 27 per cent). Spring is here and while the Southern Downs and Granite Belt regions remain drought-declared there are signs of optimism for our rural industries, with hope ever springing eternal for those on the land. While cattle numbers in particular at the Warwick Saleyards remain relatively low - although fluctuating widely week-to-week prices are likewise relatively strong, reflecting what the latest Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey says is optimism within the wider Queensland beef sector. The cattle yarding at this week’s Warwick cattle sale saw a total of 632 head go over the scales, well up on the previous week’s yarding of 347. Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) said of this week’s sale that “overall quality was generally good with a lift in the standard of the lightweight young cattle”. “A fair panel of export buyers was present and operating along with the usual trade and feeder buyers plus local and interstate restockers. “A lift in quality plus stronger demand resulted in light weight yearling steers gaining over 40 cents per kilo. “However yearling steers to feed experienced only quality-related price changes, and yearling heifers followed a similar trend. “Yearling steers under 200 kilos made to 550 cents, while yearling steers under 280 kilos made to 544 cents, to average 489 cents per kilo. “Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market averaged from 419 to 422 cents, with

An innovative, healthy snack food product from the Granite Belt has been short-listed as a finalist in two categories at the prestigious 2020 Australasian Food and Beverage Industry Awards. Upple - a nutritious new product containing whole apple and packaged in a distinctive bottle custom-made from recycled plastic was launched last week into the retail market at Sam’s Farm Fresh Fruit and Veg at Cottonvale. “I’m very proud that Upple has been launched here,” said Sam Giacca, proprietor of the business. “I always like to support local products and this is fantastic and unique - drinkable whole apple in a bottle! “Lots of fibre, too, and made right here on the Savio’s farm at Pozieres.” Significantly, Upple is not a juice but a smooth textured drinkable snack containing 99.9 per cent whole cored apples and a splash of vitamin C. Unlike juice, Upple is full of apple goodness as it contains peel, pulp and fibre and no added sugar - a guaranteed minimum two grams of fibre in every bottle makes Upple a very satisfying snack, just like drinking an apple. The launch of Upple creates a new beverage category in Australia ‘drinkable fruit’.

Produced on-site at the Savio family orchard at Pozieres near Stanthorpe in a HACCP accredited facility, the exciting concept has gained early recognition from the Food and Beverage Industry. The 2020 Food and Beverage Awards will be announced later this month, with Upple a finalist in Convenience Product of the Year and Start-up of The Year. Managing director John Savio said “we believe Upple is an outstanding product and this is very exciting development for the apple industry and the region”. “Savio Healthy Innovations is a new arm of our business and we have worked closely with a small group of food industry professionals for three years to develop Upple,” John said. “We have invested in and researched ways to make innovative products using quality whole eating apples which are just outside retail specifications. “Upple is made right here in Pozieres in a purpose-built HACCP accredited food processing facility on the orchard. “Apples are picked, washed, cored and processed on-site into Upple. “Our process is unique and we have a patent application pending. “Upple is available in two varieties, Pink

Within one year he had purchased his own 29 acre farm at Pozieres, started growing apples and was reunited with his wife and son who followed from Italy. The editor’s desk Based on the latest Rabobank Rural Confidence survey released this week there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the local rural sector in the coming months - and perhaps also based on the forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology for above-average rainfall this spring and summer. Realistically the Southern Downs and Granite Belt and border districts are still in drought and current weather predictions alone are unlikely to raise hopes too high, certainly not until the ground is wet and money is in the bank. But there are positives to be seen there are good crops on the ground in places across the region and the wider Darling Downs, all up a greener prospect than the same time last year. On the other side of the equation, livestock numbers at the Warwick Saleyards remain low and it’s a reflection of the laws of supply and demand, and both short-term and longer-term seasonal conditions. One of the biggest issues continues to be the numbers of breeding stock - both cattle and sheep - across Queensland which have gone for sale and slaughter in recent times. And not to mention the effects of prolonged dry conditions on plant stock in our horticultural industry. When this is taken into account it puts the longer-term recovery of all of these industries into sharp perspective, including perhaps looking further ahead to the next generation of those on the land and if they’re keen for the challenge ongoing. That’s the bigger picture our rural sector is no doubt considering, while dealing with more immediate weather and market conditions.

‘Confident’ spring start From page 1 “That said, less than a quarter of Queensland producers (23 per cent) believed business conditions would improve in the next 12 months - a similar reading to last survey’s 24 per cent. “This slight rise in farmer confidence saw Queensland bucking the national trend, with all other states, except Tasmania, reporting a decline in sentiment this quarter.” Rabobank says optimism about commodity prices, particularly in the beef sector - along with more positive seasonal conditions - “underpinned” improved farmer confidence levels in Queensland. Overall, of those Queensland producers with a positive outlook on the year ahead, 56 per cent cited commodity prices as a key reason for their optimism and 46 per cent nominated seasonal conditions. But for those Queensland farmers who had a negative outlook on the coming 12 months, commodity prices were also raised as a concern - particularly in the sugar and grains sectors - while overseas market uncertainty and COVID-19 disruptions were also found to be driving pessimism. Rabobank regional manager for Southern Queensland and Northern NSW Brad James said much of Queensland’s renewed rural confidence could be attributed to the robust beef sector. “The cattle market has remained buoyant over recent months - limited supply, restocker demand and a turn in the season in some areas continues to drive strength in the market, and cattle producers with stock to sell are enjoying good returns,” he said. “Beef was the most confident agricultural sector in the state, with 27 per cent of graziers expecting improved conditions in the agricultural economy in the 12 months ahead. “The recent surge in prices, with the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator hitting a record of 776 cents per kilogram in recent weeks, is a sign of the current confidence in the market. “Across the state, sentiment was up in all surveyed regions, with those surveyed in the Channel Country - an area that benefitted from good rainfall in its catchments - comparatively positive about their prospects for the 12 months ahead. “Confidence showed signs of improvement in the grains sector, however the survey revealed lingering concerns about commodity prices and the impacts of COVID-19 among Queensland croppers. “Wheat prices are expected to come in below the current five-year-average, although this has been elevated by some ports recording over AUD450/tonne wheat for extended periods during the drought. “And there are some concerns leading into harvest about access to extra staff, with many properties reliant on seasonal labour and interstate contractors during this busy time. “On the Darling Downs, unseasonal winter rain across cultivations provided welcome relief leading into the summer cropping season, and timely in-crop falls across the cur-

suitable runs of trade and butchers lambs. “Weights are still a major downfall as the flush season has led to an increase in dressed weight, whilst this suits exporters the domestic markets prefer the 18 to 21kilo dressed weight. “The larger numbers saw one exporter move into buying mode and results showed an increase over the past fortnight. “Lambs topped at $200 and $195, hoggets were at $142 to $174, wethers topped at $160 to $166 and ewes topped at $153 and $187. “Light lambs and ewe and lamb units as well as replacement ewes either Dorper, Merino or crossbred are keenly sought after.” Ross said even Warwick’s iconic Pig and Calf Sale has “seen an increase in numbers available with pigs, calves and goats all keenly sought after”. “The lack of numbers of pork available to processors is pushing prices higher,” he said. “Poultry prices are also on the up - is it COVID-19 that is pushing for more layers, hens and roosters? “The level has increased since the arrival of COVID-19 as the backyard fowl house has gained more importance - or is it to keep the kids busy in the shutdown?”

Granite Belt Irrigation Project (GBIP) chief executive officer LLOYD TAYLOR shares the latest September update on Emu Swamp Dam ...

Emu Swamp Dam update

As GBIP nears construction, we are able confirm the new release date for the Dam Design and Construct Tender will be the beginning of February, with the Pumps and Pipeline Design Tender to be announced shortly after. Once finalised, construction will begin, resulting in new jobs for the region. GBIP is renewing its Cultural Heritage 12460593-SG37-20

Spring has brought a flurry of activity to the region. While producers are busy in the paddocks, Granite Belt Irrigation Project has taken a significant step towards breaking ground with the commencement of the final phase of water sales to local irrigators, this week. An important milestone for the Project, we expect the agreements with irrigators to be finalised by the end of next month. The completion of the water sales will then allow us to validate the pipeline route, and progress necessary government approvals, specific to the distribution network. In addition to confirming water sales contracts, GBIP is also now undertaking two other important pieces of work, including seeking Infrastructure Designation Status with the Queensland Government to streamline approvals and permit processes, and entering into negotiations with landholders to access or acquire land along the pipeline route. The finalisation of water sales and land procurement will pave the way for construction to commence, while achieving Infrastructure Designation Status will ensure there is a smooth approval pathway for project construction. Landholders in the pipeline corridor are being contacted by land acquisition and compensation advisory company, Minsol Group, to discuss land access and the route for the pipeline corridor. As well as carrying out this important work, it has been heartening to see the team enjoy their time in the Granite Belt, as they engage with the community and take advantage of our region’s wonderful offering during their stay in Stanthorpe.

Work to begin on estate By Tania Phillips The Arcadia Developments Over 50s Lifestyle Resort at Stanthorpe has moved a step closer with contractors expected to be announced soon. Arcadia Estate National Sales Manager Dianne Fielding said the company hopes to be onsite by the end of the month and have the nine display homes started by late January at the Torrisi Terrace site, and are looking to employ as many locals as possible. The company plans to build a resort with 90 residences and a country club aimed at allowing over 50s to retire and to age “in place”. “We’re in negotiation with the civil contractors to see who is going to start the job,” Dianne said. “We are hoping to be on-site by the end of the month. “We then anticipate it will take a few months to get everything ready to build the homes. Hopefully construction will start in late January and we’ll start building the nine displays so people can see each type of home we’ve got offered and make their decision on where they would like to live.” The group had been looking around for several years for a suitable country site to develop a resort. “All developers decide to go to the city because it’s an easy sell,” Dianne, who is originally from the Stanthorpe area, said. However she said that on a visit back to the area many locals expressed a need for a facility like this in the region. “They want to go into a lifestyle resort but they don’t want to go live in Toowoomba or Brisbane,” she said. “Their friends, their whole network is here in the country so we started to really think about it.

An artists impression of the new Arcadia Estate which will include both single and double storey houses as well as a country club and a cinema. “We got very good feedback about building something up there from people in the surrounding district. “There are also a lot of people who to retire to Stanthorpe and around Stanthorpe - traditionally from Brisbane, and there are still a lot from Brisbane, but there is now people from the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast who are retiring up there. “They want a true four-season lifestyle and they want to live in a country atmosphere - just a simpler life. “Stanthorpe is a tourist town and it has a lot to offer.”

Dianne said they are also very focused on what they’re going to build so it is unique to the area. “What we are building in Stanthorpe is a French Country design,” she said. “It has a bit of an old, a bit of new feel about it so it fits in with the country landscape and future ones we build we will theme them for the areas. “All our resorts will be one off and won’t be repeated at the next place that we go to.” The resort will feature 90 homes and a Country Club with all of the facilities including a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, spa, yoga

room, gymnasium, cinema and a games room. “We will also have a library section and a small cafe which will have a commercial kitchen with a bar area, coffee shop and we’ll have a chef on site who can put out menus if people want to go for morning tea, breakfast or lunch or the occasional dinner as well,” Dianne said. “The meals are not supplied but it will be like a proper cafe lounge area where they can go meet friends if they want to, have afternoon tea. “Outside the building we have a tennis, bocce and croquet court - there will also be parking available for RV homes and caravans.”

Recycled water update Work is progressing on the construction of a holding tank adjacent to the Warwick Saleyards off McEvoy Street as part of the extension of Warwick’s recycled water network. The project extends the recycled water network from its current end point at Slade Park into the industrial estates. The recycled water is produced at the Warwick Water Treatment Plant (sewage) at the western end of Victoria Street and currently supplies sporting fields in Warwick including Queens Park, along with Warwick State High School. The water is treated to ‘Class A’ recycled standard which means it is not of the same ‘potable’ standard as Warwick’s town water and not suitable for drinking, but is suitable for a range of industrial purposes. To be used in food-related industries recycled water must be treated to ‘Class A+’ standard. The extension to the recycled water network is currently being undertaken through two contracts let by the Southern Downs Regional Council. The first, worth $3,772,729, was awarded in September 2019 to Toowoomba-based engineering and construction firm Newlands Civil Construction, while the second was for

The holding tank near the Warwick Saleyards will have a 2ML capacity, with the recycled water network extension involving 5km of new pipelines. $602,208 and awarded in July of this year to Offaly Civil Engineering based at Yatala. As well as supplying recycled water to the ‘old’ industrial estate off McEvoy Street the project will also supply water to the newer industrial areas in the vicinity of Kenilworth Street, and to the truck wash at the Warwick Saleyards. The network will also extend to rural areas in the vicinity of Canningvale Road.

Other than the council-owned saleyards no commercial users in the industrial estates have yet signed formal contracts to purchase recycled water from the extended network. A council spokeswoman this week told the Free Times the SDRC has “received several expressions of interest from businesses within the Warwick Industrial Estate regarding potential use of recycled water”. “Council will hold discussions with those

businesses who have already expressed an interest and will also undertake an expression of interest process for all industrial and agriculture users within the vicinity of the pipeline, once the works are complete,” the spokeswoman said. Around 50 per cent of the funding for the extension is through the Queensland Government’s ‘Building Our Regions’ program.

Tech giants “must talk” Recent threats and disingenuous claims by global tech giants Google and Facebook provide a stark and compelling reminder of why government intervention is necessary to force these two global behemoths to the table to negotiate with news media businesses; the subject of their current posturing, Country Press Australia president, Bruce Ellen said. Mr Ellen said the negotiating framework outlined in the ACCC’s Mandatory Code exposure draft proposes, like any sensible commercial business arrangement where parties have equal bargaining power, appropriate recognition and recompense is exchanged for the costs incurred by one party in producing a product, then used by another for commercial benefit. “But of course, the power imbalance between two of the most powerful businesses ever seen, and news media businesses, particularly small independent publishers, is immense,” he said. “The core of this matter is that the significant cost of producing independent and objective news and journalism by news media businesses vital to our democracy, is being used by the global tech giants to drive increased audiences and engagement, and build trust in their platforms, providing them with both a direct and indirect commercial benefit. “This is primarily in the form of paid advertising on the tech giants’ various platforms that is leveraged by the size and engagement of their audience, all contributed to by the

content taken from news media businesses. “The fact that this commercial benefit to the tech giants, has been at the expense of advertising revenue that previously supported the provision of public interest journalism in news media businesses, massively compounds the challenges facing our democracy in sustaining independent and objective reporting, analysis and investigation. “ Mr Ellen said this concern was particularly acute for regional, rural and small publishers, where the economies of scale available to large corporate media conglomerates do not exist. He said the recent closures of regional newspapers and local broadcasting newsrooms highlighted the challenges. “Regional and rural communities should not be excluded from this vital part of our democracy, that holds those in power to account, and sheds a light on injustices in those local communities,” he said. “Until the Australian Government leads the world in December 2017, by directing the ACCC to investigate competition in the media and advertising services market, escalating concerns about the future of public interest journalism, were largely being ignored by those outside the industry.” Country Press Australia applauds the Federal Government and ACCC for their determination to bring the global tech giants to the table to address a serious matter that should be of vital concern to all Australians, Mr Ellen said.

CHARGE HEARD A woman charged with the murder of Warwick toddler Connor Horan had her case mentioned in the Warwick Magistrates Court on Monday of this week, 7 September, with the matter adjourned until Monday 12 October. Lisa Rose Halcrow, 40, was charged in February of this year with one count each of murder and assault causing grievous bodily harm. The charges followed a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of two year old Connor Horan in Warwick in August 2018. The charges were first heard in the Warwick Magistrates Court in late February. Halcrow remains remanded in custody and has not yet been required to enter a plea. Police have alleged Halcrow was caring for Connor Horan as a baby-sitter at the time of his death on August 19 2018, when the boy was taken to Warwick Hospital where he was declared deceased.

Principal Scientist from the Department of Environment and Science (DES) Dr Jonathan Marshall said Queensland scientists had successfully established a new population of the fish species, the river blackfish, near Killarney. “It’s now only the second population of the threatened species to exist in Queensland,” Dr Marshall said. “Before last week, river blackfish were

known from only one stream in Queensland. Now, they occupy two. “The cold-water fish species which were widely distributed millions of years ago when the climate was cold and wet, have been under increased pressure from rising temperatures and dry creeks. “In February, a team of ecologists captured 50 river blackfish from Spring Creek in the upper Condamine River catchment, where the flow of water almost stopped due to extreme heat and drought. “After being housed in a specialised refrigerated aquaculture facility as an ‘ark’ or insurance population until natural conditions improved, the fish were released back into the wild in nearby Adjinbilly Creek, which is a rocky, spring fed stream with all the characteristics of ideal blackfish habitat, creating a second population. “River blackfish are an ancient cold-water species that die if the water temperature rises above 28 degrees. “As the population at Spring Creek was isolated with no chance of recolonising locally, I have no doubt the fish were at serious risk of local extinction if immediate action was not taken.”

Ben Haddock has been named WIOA Queensland Young Operator of the Year. Photo - SDRC. Congratulations have gone to Ben Haddock from the Southern Downs Regional Council who has been namedqldwater/Water Industry Operators Association of Australia’s (WIOA) Queensland Young Operator of the Year after demonstrating initiative, innovation and ‘a thirst for knowledge’ in his role as a Treatment Plant Operator at the Stanthorpe Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants. According to Treatment Plants Coordinator Stewart Mitchell, Ben has showed leadership and proactive problem solving after drought presented uncharted challenges at the facility. “Tackling the effects of severe drought and treating water from Connolly Dam at the treatment plant presented unique issues for which there was no pre-existing manual,” Mr Mitchell said. “Ben has demonstrated a willingness to be on the front foot in finding solutions to the emerging issues faced by the team as result of ongoing drought. “Ben has earnt respect and acknowledgement from colleagues. By being on the ball, having a sense of ownership, putting ideas out in the open and being upfront about things, he will continue to gain this acknowledgement.” Mayor Vic Pennisi said Ben was a deserving recipient of the qldwater/WIOA award and represented Council’s core values of success, determination, resilience and commitment. “I commend Ben on this outstanding achievement - he has stepped up to meet the challenges of his role and shown commitment and attention to detail in dealing with some unprecedented challenges,” Cr Pennisi said. “Well done Ben - we value the contribution you make to our organisation.” Ben said he is truly grateful for the strong and supportive team he is a part of and the award is testament to their unity. “The award caught me by surprise and it is a massive achievement for myself and the Water and Waste Water team,” Ben said. “It shows with a good team, perseverance and positive attitude can lead to self-advancement.”

M&M TIMBER

A council spokeswoman said Ben’s experience, dedication and thirst for knowledge proved to be fundamental to one of the most significant water carting projects undertaken in Australia. “Council continues to cart 1.5 megalitres of raw water from Connolly Dam to Stanthorpe’s raw water storage tanks,” the spokeswoman said. “From all the team at Council, congratulations Ben!”

NON-PROFIT GRANTS A funding boost of $200,000 is now available to local not-for-profit community organisations through the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Community Grant (COVID-19) Recovery funding program. This latest funding round forms part of the financial lifeline extended by Council’s COVID-19 Economic Relief Package and provides financial support to not-for-profit organisations hit by the pandemic. Councillor for Community Services, Towns and Villages, and Disaster Recovery Sheryl Windle encouraged the region’s not-for-profits to review the funding criteria and seek assistance for their socially-valued projects and services. “Recovery is a journey and the needs of the community are constantly changing. Council has implemented a phased and targeted approach to supporting the community through COVID-19 to offer financial relief when and where it is needed,” Cr Windle said. “Initially Council provided immediate relief to residents and business with rate cuts and fee concessions, and after extensive community consultation, this next phase of funding focuses on not-for-profit organisations. “Our dedicated community organisations make considerable and tireless contributions the cultural, economic, environment and social wellbeing of Southern Downs’ communities and this funding will empower and build more resilient communities. “The initiatives of the Community Grant program are designed to stimulate and energise the local economy by enabling not-forprofit organisations to engage local contractors and purchase from local businesses.”

NEWS

Not-for-profits can also access the funding to develop alternate service delivery models and maintain connection with each other and with the community. Eligible groups can apply for up to $5,000 each which must be spent locally. Funding is available for projects or activities taking place between 1 December 2020 and 31 December 2021. Eligible groups can apply online with applications closing on Monday 28 September 2020 at midnight. CONSULTATION ... At the 27 August 2020 Ordinary Meeting, Council endorsed community consultation being undertaken regarding recreational activities on Council water storages. Council’s Environmental and Regulatory Services department has commenced developing policy options for recreational activities on Council owned and operated water storages, namely Storm King Dam, Connolly Dam and Beehive Dam. The intent of introducing a policy is to ensure the safe and sustainable recreational use of Council water storages by setting out activities that may be carried out and the circumstances under which those activities may be restricted, including under drought conditions and reduced water levels. Consultation with the community will be the final step before a draft policy is brought to Council for consideration later in 2020. Southern Downs Regional Councillor for Sport and Recreation Marco Gliori said that having an engaged community during the consultation period helps Council create better policies. “I really encourage community members to engage with this consultation process, your feedback will help us to create a policy that works for the community in the best way possible.” “As much as Councillors and staff try to anticipate the community’s needs, we need input from the people we are trying to serve”

Rural Links Feral cats in SDRC sights Southern Downs councillors have endorsed a council submission to the Federal Government’s inquiry into the problem of feral and domestic cats in Australia, and that community consultation be undertaken on feral and domestic cat management strategies. A council spokeswoman said the submission went to the August general council meeting and was “drafted by Council officers in consultation with a local native wildlife group”. The spokeswoman said the submission addressed the following Prevalence of feral and domestic cats in Australia The effectiveness of current legislative and regulatory approaches The efficacy (in terms of reducing the impact of cats), cost effectiveness and use of current and emerging methods and tools for controlling feral cats, including baiting, the establishment of feral cat-free areas using conservation fencing, gene drive technology Public awareness and education in relation to the feral and domestic cat problem Interaction between domestic cat ownership and the feral cat problem, and best practice approaches to the keeping of domestic cats in this regard Councillor for Environmental, Waste, Sustainability, and Disaster Management Cameron Gow said councillors noted “the impact cats have on native wildlife and the importance of responsible pet ownership”. “It’s no secret the impact that feral cats have on our natural environment,” Cr Gow said. “But what is often left out of the conversation is the damage domestic cats can cause and how, if not responsibly cared for, they can contribute to the feral population. “Cats can be great pets and we need to do what we can to make sure that their health and the companionship they can offer to cat owners is not at the expense of our unique biodiversity.” The council spokeswoman said the SDRC applied for funding through the second round of the Australian Government’s Communities Combating Pest and Weed Impacts During Drought Program. “The application was successful and $174,000 has been received by Council to deliver a cat management project through 2020/2021 and 2021/2022,” the spokeswoman said. “In recognition of the increasing cat problem in the Southern Downs Region, Council is considering implementing cat management strategies through the project. “These strategies may include compulsory micro-chipping, registration and de-sexing (unless you are a registered breeder) for domestic cat ownership.”

The SDRC says exlusion fencing will build a more sustainable sheep industry and protect against the scourge of wild dogs. Exclusion fencing EOI Also at their August general meeting councillors endorsed the criteria for an expression of interest-based (EOI) funding round as part of Council’s Australian Government funded exclusion fencing project. “Council was successful in its application for one million dollars through round 1 of the Australian Government’s Communities Combating Pests and Weed Impacts During Drought Program, for the project ‘Exclusion fencing for a sustainable sheep and wool industry in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland’,” a council spokeswoman said. “This is in addition to the $700,000 Council secured via round 3 of the Queensland Feral Pest initiative (QFPI3) and the $260,000 since secured through round 2 of the Australian Government’s Communities Combating Pests and Weed Impacts During Drought Program,” she said. “Council’s successful round 1 project comprises the following components Increase the subsidy of the funding for cluster fencing received via round 3 of the QFPI3 Provide a landholder subsidy for exclusion fencing outside the established clusters

Councillor for Environmental, Waste, Sustainability and Disaster Management Cameron Gow said the council “anticipates there will be significant interest from landholders in accessing the subsidy, so it is important we have equitable criteria in place by which to allocate the funding”. “The criteria state that to be eligible, applicants must be either currently running sheep, or demonstrate a plan to return to sheep in the future. “This strategy is aimed at protecting and enhancing the viability of the sheep and

wool industry in the Southern Downs. “Sheep and wool production requires more labour inputs than cattle farming and the flow on effects to the local economy from more jobs is significant. “Wild dogs have seen people move out of sheep and into cattle over the past 10 years, particularly in the Traprock region which is very well suited to sheep and wool production. “Increasing the region’s flock generates economic benefits felt across the whole region. “It is in everyone’s best interest to see sheep return to the Traprock.” The council spokeswoman said a steering committee was established to guide the project. “Chaired by Councillor Gow, it includes Council pest management and economic development officers, local landholders representing Cluster groups, the Southern Downs Region Wild Dog Management Working Group, and Biosecurity Queensland’s State Wild Dog Coordinator,” the said. “Expressions of interest will be called by Council soon and assessed by the steering committee.”

Tree-changer guide out If you’re one of the growing number of people moving to small acreage property on the edge of an urban area with a small number of animals, then the Queensland Department of Agriculture has a guide for that. Ted Parish, Manager, Small Landholder Livestock Response, said the newly-available ‘Guide to managing livestock on small properties’ is “an invaluable resource for the many people making a tree change to a more rural lifestyle”. “The guide provides useful information to small landholders on managing soil and pasture in a changing climate, dealing with pests, and caring for animals including horses, cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas and pigs,” Mr Parish said. “This is very timely as an increasing number of us are choosing life on acreage over larger towns and cities. “Queensland’s peri-urban sector stretches from the tropical north all the way down the New South Wales border. “There are close to 60,000 properties occupied by small landholders with fewer than 50 head of livestock, which represents about 55 percent of all registered land holdings in the state. “The new lifestyle comes with some unique tasks and challenges.

“Tree changers’’ make up a significant share of rural landholders. “For many, their skill levels will vary greatly, and it may be the first time they’ve ever lived outside of a city. “Caring for animals requires a lot of effort and expertise, especially during a prolonged drought, so we’re keen to give people as much information as possible to make the task more achievable, and help ensure the welfare of animals on small holdings.”

Biosecurity Queensland is urging poultry owners to have good biosecurity measures in place after six farms have been detected with avian influenza (AI) in Victoria since the initial outbreak on 31 July 2020. To minimise the risk of AI on your property, Queensland poultry owners are encouraged to: Prevent contact between your poultry and wild birds (e.g. protect their feed and use chlorinated water). Pre-emptive culling of wild birds is not an appropriate response to this incident, as it is not known to have any impact on the spread of the disease. Prevent contact between your birds and visitors who may have had contact with poultry, aviary or wild birds. Always ask ‘where have you been?’ when you are picking up or receiving products for your farm. This includes feed deliveries, equipment, transport trucks for eggs or poultry products. Then ask - ‘is it clean?’ to remind yourself and others to ensure you are not transferring infected material to your birds through clothes, hands, footwear or equipment. Make sure your biosecurity entity registration is current. If you own or keep 100 or more poultry, or 100 or more birds that have been released into free flight since they started being kept in captivity (e.g. pigeons) you must be registered. If you’re already registered check your contact de-

Soil advocate... Federal Agriculture Minister and Maranoa MP David Littleproud says he’s looking forward to digging in with new National Soils Advocate the Hon Penelope Wensley AC to help grow farming’s sustainable future. Ms Wensley will continue the great work and international leadership of our first National Soils Advocate, Major General the Hon Michael Jeffery, AC, AO (Mil), CVO, MC (Retd). “The reappointment of a National Soil Advocate reinforces the Australian Government’s recognition of the critical role soil plays in agricultural productivity, environmental resilience and the health and wellbeing of all Australians,” Mr Littleproud said this week. “This will build on the many legacies the first National Soil Advocate has given Australia as he retires from the role after establishing it eight years ago. “It is with great respect and gratitude that I thank Major General Jeffery for his leadership, dedication and service to Australia. “The work must continue, and it is a great pleasure to welcome Ms Wensley to the role. “With Ms Wensley’s roots in the fertile soils of Toowoomba, along with international diplomacy and state governance, there is no doubt she will continue the great work of General Jeffery to protect, maintain and restore the health of Australia’s soil. “Ms Wensley is no stranger to leadership on

Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) Spring Lamb campaign has launched with a new content series which aims to demonstrate the ease and versatility of cooking with lamb by celebrating local Aussie heroes with renowned Aussie chefs cooking them legendary lamb meals to say thanks for their inspiring work. The Lamb Legends series kicks off with a three-part video series, where top chefs - MasterChef star Hayden Quinn, Mr Wong legend Dan Hong and Three Blue Ducks chef Darren Robertson - say thanks to a deserving legend with a tasty lamb meal. MLA Domestic Market Manager, Graeme Yardy said the Lamb Legends campaign demonstrates the everyday ease and versatility of Australian lamb whilst encouraging Aussies to cook and share a lamb dish with a legend in their own lives. “At a time when we need it most, the series highlights the positive impact of connecting and sharing a delicious lamb meal with others,” Mr Yardy said. “The feel-good campaign showcases inspiring legendary stories shared over a quick and easy lamb dish that can be easily prepared at home. “In order to meet the needs of the evolving consumer during the COVID-19 period, the campaign will provide simple and practical cooking information in an engaging and inspiring way through relevant digital channels. The series aims to build confidence amongst consumers to cook with lamb and increase lamb meal consumption through a range of diverse cuts and cuisines.” Utilising the ‘Share the Lamb’ platform, the six-week Spring campaign will appear across digital video, on demand TV video broadcast, YouTube and social channels. Retailers will be promoting Australian Lamb through various instore and catalogue activities. A social competition will drive audience engagement with a chance to win a personal online cooking tutorial with Merivale Head Chef, Dan Hong. One Nation leader Pauline Hanson this week labelled AgForce as “counterproductive” following a statement by Queensland’s peak farming body that the money needed to build a hybrid version of the Bradfield Scheme would be better spent elsewhere. The Queensland Senator says she has “boldly supported the water project since my re-election to the federal parliament in 2016”. “These organisations have been proven in the past to not always make the right decisions for the man on the land,” Senator Hanson said in a statement this week. “Peak farming bodies have destroyed the pig industry, they’ve supported free trade agreements that have hurt fruit growers and look at what their support of deregulating the dairy industry has done to Queensland farmers. “They’re too often glued to the hip of political parties which prevents them from truly representing the interest of their farming members. “If we want to increase our farming capacity, Queensland must commit to the Bradfield Scheme. “A feasibility study into the Bradfield Scheme was delivered in 2018 revealing an estimated $20 billion investment would be required to complete the project. “Drought proofing Queensland should be the number one priority of the next Government, but both Labor and the LNP have more interest in throwing their support behind a bid for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics which has cost

Plenty to admire locally As I’ve been driving around town I’ve been admiring some of the gardens and especially the loropetalums at the court house corner. They are in full flower at the moment and look spectacular. I have had no luck in growing these in various situations, even though they are supposed to be “idiot” proof, so I really admire these each time I go past. The council parks and gardens employees have been busy pruning all the roses around town with the exception of the beautiful pink ones on the Palmerin and Fitzroy St corner. I believe the variety is ‘Jane McGrath’ but am open to correction on that as I am no rose expert. They are one I would grow though, as they look wonderful and seem to bloom all year. I am not a rose grower but do love them and this year Annette and Mark Russell will have their lovely garden with hundreds of roses, annuals and perennials, open to the public. This beautiful garden is, appropriately, in Rose Street, Killarney and will be open each day from October 10th to Nov 14th. Due to the current restrictions it would be wise to ring ahead and book a time especially if you are travelling any distance. Annette always enters many roses in the Spring Flower Show, but as this has had to be cancelled, take the time and a trip to Killarney and see them all growing in situ. The perfume is unbelievable and the kaleidoscope of colour amazing. It is truly is a delight for the senses and guaranteed to lift your spirits. Most mornings lately I like to sit on my sunny north facing front patio with a “cuppa” and watch the bees busy in my lavender. There at least 3 varieties of bees that visit each day. I have an ornament in this area that says ‘time in my garden starts the day off right’ and this is so right. Today I have fertilised my many pots - most are dormant at present and some I can’t remember what they hold, but I like surprises and the coming weeks will hold many! I have 18 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES Thursday, 10 September, 2020

a dwarf lemon tree in a pot that is covered in blossom at present and is about to be relocated to my front patio so I can enjoy the beautiful perfume and attract more bees. Yesterday I planted up two small above ground beds with herbs and included some dwarf marigolds for colour. I have found a spot where I can put a mint and it can go wild and spread and not cause any problems. Previously, with limited success, I have planted mint in a container as it can become very invasive. With such things you always have to be mindful of your neighbours and make sure you are not causing them problems. Likewise with hedges and trees you plant along fence lines, it is important to be considerate of what is on the other side! Some years ago during the carnival of flowers I saw a creeper that had the most spectacular flowers, I hunted it down and found it was called “parrots beak” or “lotus vine” or, if we are going to get really precise, “lotus berthelotii”, a perennial plant from the Canary Islands. I purchased one and it is thriving with little care and has surprised me with a lovely show of flowers in the last week. I have had a problem recently with neighbourhood cats digging in my garden. Now, even though I am not a cat lover, I realise this is something that is going to happen now that I live in town. However I do object to them digging in the garden right near my front door! I bought some repellent that worked for a while but then I got the idea of blending some orange skins as I had reason to juice a quantity and know that they do not go in the compost. So the skins were blended and poured on the garden - success at last! The citronella contained in the skins seems to be very effective. Apparently if I do the same with banana skins and put the resulting slurry around my tomatoes they will love it! I’ll have to give it a try. I’ve also read that watering indoor plants with sparkling water will give them a boost as

The “Parrot’’s Beak’’ or “Lotus Vine’’ originated in the Canary Islands. it contains many beneficial nutrients as will using the water from cooking your vegetables. Epsom salts has long been known for sweetening citrus ... . sprinkle around the drip line and water in. Coffee grounds or sawdust are great barriers for snails and slugs. As alluded to earlier, due to the current government restrictions the Warwick Horticultural Society has made the difficult decision to cancel the annual Spring Flower Show that is always held in October in St Mary’s Hall. The Garden Competition will still be held so

keep working on having your garden in shape for judging on Monday October 5th. The rodeo weekend Floral Window Competition will still be held despite the fact that the Rodeo will not be happening. Many business in town would be open to having their windows decorated so maybe you should put your thinking caps on, get the creative juices going and design a display to advertise your business, club, school or just because you’d like to be creative!

Gabba the centre stage tional Play; Sunday 27 September - Men’s District Singles - Post Sectional.

By Casey OÇonnor Queenslanders have had a week to come to grips with becoming the centre of the AFL Universe. As Queensland welcomed in Spring and all the sporting events that come with it, the AFL confirmed that the 2020 Grand Final would indeed be coming to the Gabba. Believe it or not the AFL world and the circus that rolls along with it is “Gaga for the Gabba”. As Annastacia basked in the reflected glory of snaring the AFL’s major prize, young AFL players and the AFL entourage settled into lockdown on the Gold Coast. What could possibly go wrong?? It didn’t take long for the wheels to fall off the little red wagon with two Richmond players breaking out of the lockdown bubble, enjoying a big night out and then falling foul of the law. Seems it doesn’t matter what is at stake or the consequences; there will always be footballers (code is immaterial) who have little between their ears and put self-interest above all else. Collingwood President Eddie Maguire’s comments on the matter were gold, “The idiot soup kicked in on them and they decided it was a good idea to break every rule they’ve been told for the last three months.” Not too much growl left in those Tigers who found themselves back in Victoria with a 10-week suspension and company and club sanctions to follow. The Richmond club also fined $100,000. Gillon McLachlan (AFL CEO) less than happy with that effort. As mere mortals suffer through unpleasant Queensland quarantine conditions those in the AFL bubble appear to be enjoying a charmed existence. Many appear to be enjoying a holiday in the GC sunshine not isolation and quarantine. There are serious questions being asked why some members of the 400 strong AFL contingent are even part of the bubble. It is a situation that has not gone un-noticed and Gillon McLachlan is “Not happy Jan”. - Casey

MAKING GOOD PROGRESS I have an update for those who may be interested in the progress of Toby Dempster’s ride to Cairns. He and his crew are retracing Toby’s bike ride to Cairns 70 years ago. I can report all is going well. The group has had over-night stays in Kingaroy, Gin Gin and the Bluff. Also forgive me - Toby is not 87 yet merely a young 86 and three quarters.

CONSTABLE AND JARMAN MEDAL WINNERS Stanthorpe golfers teed off in Saturday’s stroke event playing for the September monthly medal with Scott Constable’s consistency once again coming to the fore. After returning a card of 71 for a nett 70 score he collected the daily double. The best gross and best nett on the day and the September Monthly Medal. Four players were snapping at his heels finishing with nett 71. The countback went the way of Mark Hendry who was declared the runner-up with Andrew Burgess, Ken Hinze, Trevor Ludlow (71) relegated to the run down along with, David Burgess (72), Barry Hughes and Eric McLellan (73). There was no inquiry necessary when Trevor Ludlow was awarded the gong for the least number of putts - 23 for the round, In a good display Ludlow needed only ten on the front nine. The ladies medal event was very competi-

The United Redbacks sit at the Top of Towooma Premier League table after their convincing win over USQ. tive and the winner with nett 71 was Madeline Jarman, who just pipped runner-up Margie Locke (nett 72). Nikki Waterworth had best gross score of 91 for the ladies and Helen Jones collected a rundown for her nett 73. Runner-up Margie Locke had the best putting performance (29) of the round. She needed only 13 for the back nine, helped with a hole out at the 13th. Scott Constable and Madeline Jarman’s wins qualify them for the Medal of Medallists. They will join other medal winners from throughout the year, and the October winner, for the play off in November. Two eagles were recorded on the day, Keith Allen at the sixth hole, in for three and the other from Jason Bacon with a three at the 11th. Sponsors, members Mark Baker and Fiona Kelly were not present, unfortunately they are currently holidaying in a far warmer, northern location. I hear that one club member who goes by the name of Sinbad because of his nautical background may be considering a defensive driving course following his buggy exploits last Friday. The buggy in question was singing to the Fleetwood Mac tune of “Go Your Own Way” (especially in reverse) as it flew out of the shed, into a wall and quickly backwards up the fairway. Chris Fittock’s quick thinking saved the day and no one was injured. Sinbad understandably was left slightly edgy up after his ordeal. This Saturday an individual Stableford event has been programmed. Tee off is from 11am and there is a timesheet at the clubhouse.

Southern Downs Netballers can now enjoy safer and more accessible facilities with the opening of four new netball courts for the Warwick and District Netball Association according to Maranoa MP David Littleproud. The Australian Government contributed more than $318,000 under the Move it AUS Community Sport Infrastructure grant program to redevelop the four hard courts. Littleproud said the upgrades would enable greater community use of facilities and futureproof the courts, which are an important facility for the local community offering junior and senior competitions. The upgrades will enable the association to offer increased training and competition options, and the capacity to host regional events. Stormwater had damaged some of the courts and restricted some use but this structural work will allow facilities to stand the test of the time so the community can continue using and enjoying them into the future. The upgrades will cater for increased community demand including from local primary and secondary schools who hold up to 15 events per year, Saturday morning games and carnivals. Group fitness classes will also start again at the site, offering more people the opportunity to take part in physical activity. “Sport is the lifeblood of our regional communities and this new top-notch facility will enhance community spirit and provide a space for the next generation of netballers to learn this great sport,” Mr Littleproud said. “Just because you come from the bush does not mean you can’t access top-notch facilities.”

NIELSEN MEDAL WNNER IN BIG FIELD A field of seventy lined-up for the John Dee monthly Medal at the Warwick Golf course on Saturday. Adam Nielsen was the clear winner with 64 nett to win by three shots from Mal Galloway and Brendan Landrigan who are both in a purple patch. Adam won the “B” grade division and qualifies for the Medal of Medals while Mal Galloway won the “A” division with his 67 on a countback from Landrigan. Grant Lambley, a relatively new player, was runner-up in the “B” division with a handy 68 nett. In the rundown it was a ball to Sean Haynes, Peter Farrell, Andrew Collins and Bert Bownds all on 69 along with Adam Hart, Slim Eldridge, Rick Mills and Don Stewart all on 70. The pin shots are back and Eddie Kemp collected at the fifth, Josh Hynes the seventh, Jo Levick the ninth while Adam Nielsen certainly aided his winning score by collecting the pins at the11th and 16th. The pro pin on 13 saw Kris McLennan win four balls, Rick Mills three, Darrell Bain and Wayne Wells two a-piece and Neville Heard and Peter Hynes one each. The draw for the Matchplay championships is finalised and is posted in the clubhouse along with the date by which each round must be completed. All nominated players are asked to familiarise themselves with the details, This Saturday a single Stableford is scheduled while the men’s foursome championships will be played on the 20 September. The Greenkeepers day, a two-ball Ambrose, will be held 27 September with proceeds going to Nathan Bell, who has served the club well in the clubhouse for years, unwell. It is hoped that a big crowd turn out for the fundraiser and show their support Nathan.

THE PLACE TO BE The word is out, Social Bowls on Thursday at the Southern Cross Bowls Club is the place to be. A Tenterfield Bowls Club group visited this past week for the games or perhaps it was the afternoon tea. Continued next page Thursday, 10 September, 2020 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES 25

The Spin From previous page Saturday, the club hosted 48 players for Division One Pennants competition with representatives from Inglewood, The Summit, Warwick East as well as Southern Cross (filling in for Goondiwindi) on the greens. Three games of fours were played and there was so much action it was difficult to know where to look next. There was plenty of noise too as bowlers screamed at their bowls and followed them to the head, installing fear into each bowl daring it not to deviate from their instructions. On Sunday, the teams from Inglewood and The Summit teams played the final (some with very sore heads, judging by the coffee consumed). Conditions were windy making play tough congratulations go to the winners, The Summit. Today, (Thursday 10 September), the ladies host another Social Mixed Bowls afternoon with play at 1pm. Please get you name in by 12.30. Beginners can have a go with bowls supplied. Contact Cheryl 0407 641 158 if you have any inquiries. On Saturday, the club is holding the “Sargent Kenny Day”, sponsored by the club’s resident Irishman, Val Gray. This is sure to be an “eggs-citing” day with heaps of great prizes. Everyone is welcome but BYO eggs. Be there before12.30pm to enter. Direct any inquires to Clark 0427 673 277. For the uninitiated, Sargent Kenny was the policeman asked by the Prime Minister Billy Hughes, to arrest the person responsible for throwing an egg at him during a speech at the Warwick Railway Station. The QLD Premier, T J Ryan, who opposed Hughes’s conscription idea, was of Irish descent. Sargent Kenny was of Irish descent and the egg thrower was of Irish descent. Sargent Kenny would have no part of it as he said it was out of his jurisdiction. The event is considered to have contributed towards the formation of the Australian Federal Police. A reminder to all past winners of the Criterion Hotel donated meal - please use your vouchers as soon as possible.

GOOD SCORES DESPITE CONDITIONS A very windy morning on Sunday produced some excellent scores considering the conditions. Richard McKillop had a great day just ahead of Beth Caskey to win open class by “X” counts. Greg Wilson had a good morning, his new rifle going well to win standard class while Bob Tyllyer won the military rifle, with Adrian Sinclair in second place. Next Sunday, 13 September we will be at the 400-yard mound for our usual F Class and target rifle competition, sign on at 8.30am for 9am start, contact Margaret on 4666 1018 for more information. Results: 300 yards F Class (open): Richard McKillop 123.11, Beth Caskey 123.5, Murray Reck 120.4, Margaret Taylor 119.8, Dave Taylor 119.6, Kevin Jones 119.5, Bruce McAllan 113.4, Dennis Wood 106.3. FARRELL OUT GUNS BIG FIELD On Wednesday (2 September) a field of 63 Sporters teed off in the September pro-shop sponsored stroke competition at the Warwick Golf Club. Robin Farrell burst from the pack with an excellent nett 64 off his 15 handicap to finish one stroke ahead of runner-up Garry 2 Names on 65. He had left the course earlier with plans as to how he was going to spend the winning spoils. (Never count your chickens, they say). In the ball rundown; Keith Farrell 66, Mark Thomas/ the very unlucky Gary Adcock on 68, next were Charlie Morrison, Clive Pulley and Trevor Malone (69). Tail end Charlie was Mal Galloway (70). Trevor Malone’s 69 was an excellent result for an old re-tread off his ( not for long) handicap of 29 This Wednesday Sporters played for the Betta Home Living trophy as the program returns to normal after the August cancellations. That will be followed by the Warwick Hotel tro26 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES Thursday, 10 September, 2020

Sporters members are encouraged to participate in the club’s Greenkeepers Day on Sunday 27 September. As mentioned previously this is a charity event for Nathan Bell, the very popular bar supervisor at the club. Nathan is doing it pretty tough at the moment and all proceeds will be going towards his medical expenses. The Two Ball Ambrose with an 11.30am shotgun start. Thanks to Elders Insurance, and the green keeping staff who are kindly sponsoring the event. Last week, the Trevor King shortest drive award, sponsored by Cyclone Wire Fencing, saw two participants ,John Porter and club captain Tony Kahler both manage to hit the separation fencing on the first tee with wonderful (not!) drives. The result declared a tie. The other golfers wish to thank both players for performing their amazing feats within sight of this columnist’s spy. Makes everyone’s job much easier. And a reminder to all golfers not to get complacent about the dreaded virus which is really just hovering over the hill from us. Please maintain social distancing, use sanitiser and comply with the clubhouse entry rules. Finally the golfing thought for the week; ‘Age is a issue of mind over matter; if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter!’ Mark Twain

PERFECT SPRING CONDITIONS Members of the Stanthorpe Bowls club enjoyed the perfect conditions heralded by the arrival of spring. Conditions were perfect for the three bowl triples and three bowl pairs played last Wednesday. Garry Trevena, Val White and Helen Jones were too strong for Ernie Jones Bruno Stefanon and Dot Rankin in the triples winning 24-13. The pairs proved to eb a low scoring game. Ray Rankin and Brian Brown outpointed Gordon Gallaway and Len Girgenti 18-12. The rumble of thunder was not enough to put a stop to play in the two games played last Saturday. In the first of the Triples games, Gordon Gallaway, Jack Bell and John Fairley proved too strong for Val White, Dot Rankin and Helen Jones 24-13. In the second game Ray Rankin, Ernie Jones and Brian Brown scored a narrow 20-16 win over Sylean Fairley, Bruno Stefanon and Wendy Hurnall. In the pairs game honours went the way of Garry Trevena and Len Girgenti. They played Mark Wicks, a new member who showed great promise in his first game and Frank Gallo. The score 28-15. If you are interested in lawn bowls and would like to give it a go, you are welcome to come to the Stanthorpe Club on Amosfield Road any Wednesday or Saturday afternoon.

UNITED AT TOP OF TABLE On Tuesday, Stanthorpe United Redbacks took on USQ in a catch up round of the fixtures. The game played in Toowoomba. Both teams have been at the top of their game. Both were coming off impressive wins and eyeing off a spot in the Presidents Cup Final which will be played for during the second round of fixtures. In spite of having to travel to Toowoomba after working all day United were determined it would not affect their performance. The game was physically from the get go. Both teams keen to assert their ascendancy resulting in a number of free kicks early in the game Both sides quickly settled into their rhythm and played some great football. Thompson, Rametta and Mascadri all had opportunities to score but their shots were either wide of the target or saved by desperate USQ defence. USQ were also guilty of wasting their opportunities as the opening 20 minutes confirmed it was going to be an entertaining game. United’s Simon Mascadri scored the first goal of the game after some good work from Ace McDonald in the midfield. The United midfield of Murphy, Purcell, McDonald and Mascadri worked tirelessly in the middle of the pitch in both defence and attack. As the season progresses they are creating some great combinations. The score at the break was onenil in United’s favour. The second began in similar fashion to the first half. A fast pace with plenty of scoring opportunities. Brad Thompson continued his recent scoring prowess finding the back of the net in the 60th minute. The goal gave United a much needed two-nil buffer. USQ then lifted the ante in attack, however Halford and his central defensive partner Andrew Crestani remained calm defusing anything USQ sent their way. The United Coach introduced Dylan Politch into the game with 15-minutes remaining. The move provided United with fresh legs and pace up front.

Politch used this to his advantage and attacked out wide delivering a great ball to Thompson to score his second goal and give United unassailable three-nil lead and minutes later a well deserved It was a great team effort and well done to Jamie Carnell who managed to keep another clean sheet. Jared Hitchener and Jordan Lanza were outstanding in their fullback roles. Their overlapping runs created havoc for USQ and was backed up by uncompromising defence. It was a near perfect display by two of the youngest members of the squad. This win catapulted Stanthorpe United into top spot on the Football Toowoomba Premier League table. It is an amazing comeback after the team lost two of their first three games in the League. Despite the recent success of the team, the coaching staff and players are not getting carried away. They will continue to focus on one game at a time. With just three points separating first and fifth everyone involved is aware how tough this competition is. The Redbacks enjoyed a bye last weekend but head to Queen’s Park tonight (Thursday 10 September) where they will host top four rivals St Albans in a rescheduled game that was washed out. The game should be a beauty and begins at 7.30pm. United need just one more point to secure a place in the President’s Cup final but the team will be chasing a win and three points to retain their place at the top of the table. On Saturday they host a re-match with USQ. That game also to be played on the Queens park field in Warwick. The game commences at 5pm. The results of both match will be pivotal in determining United’s top our chances. They will also provide an opportunity for Stanthorpe football lovers to support the local boys who are doing a great job of showcasing Granite Belt Football at its best in the top league in the district.

THE RATS MARCH ON The Warwick Water Rats remain undefeated after the match of the round between Rats and St George Frillies lived up to the hype. An away game to St George is the hardest road trip in the comepitition and both teams put on a display of bush rugby worthy of a grand final. The final score Rats 19-Frillies 17. The first ten minutes was played with AGrade skill and intensity. The standard never really faltered throughout the 70 minutes. The Rats’ captain Jared Fearby describing the game as the toughest he’s ever played. It was trench warfare, but never slow or scrappy. The Rats defence was rugged and steadfast with discipline levels not allowing St George easy metres. Goal kicking again proved the difference. A crucial St George kick came agonisingly close,. The Rats and their supporters breathing a sigh of relief as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced away It was the Rats most complete performance of the year and it needed to be against the 2019 premiers. The Rats now regroup and continue to work hard. A reminder that this Saturday is Ladies Day. One day will never be enough but it’s a time to celebrate the immense contribution women provide in all areas of rugby. The Rats deserve to see a big crowd supporting Ladies Day and their last home game.

COLTS BACK IN WINNING FORM

The framed and signed 2007 Collingwood Premiership jersey has pride of place in Trevor Sharp’’s Moonrise Estate Cellar Door on the Granite Belt. One idea that did not fly then, nor has it to this day was to erect a bar between the goal posts and disallowing dribbled or bounced goals that went under the bar. That was ignored and some say thank goodness. While that idea was a little left field many of his radical ideas back then are part and parcel of the modern game. Sharp was a student of the game. He travelled overseas (unheard of in the day) to study other codes. While in America he noted that the NFL used a player interchange system and was keen to introduce that to the game in the 40’s. At the time there was only one reserve and he was not an interchange player. Sharp believed having as many as four reserves would be of great benefit to the game. Another of the ideas he bought to the table was to award a free kick against any player who kicked the ball out of bounds on the full. Remember the year was 1944 - 25 years later that rule was introduced. Another of his suggestions which is all too familiar to us today. Sharp suggested that for the finals all seats in the public stands be numbered and booking places opened a month before the games. He and the Collingwood club were true vanguards of the AFL. The Sharp family connection has not been lost to the AFL. Paul Seedsman, Jim sharp’s great grandson and nephew of Trevor Sharp currently plays for Adelaide. Prior to being traded to Adelaide Seedsman was drafted by Collingwood in 2010. He played 49 games over five seasons for the Magpies. You have to wonder what Sharp would think of the AFL today and of the bold step to move the Grand Final game to the Gabba. His grandson Trevor knows that with just three fixture games remaining this season his beloved Magpies are still in the hunt for a top eight position. Should Collingwood or perhaps even the Lions make the 2020 GF he will be one of the 30,000 people vying for one of those numbered seats that go on sale shortly. Unfortunately there will be no special provision for the grandson of the man who birthed the idea. When you scratch beneath the surface it is no wonder the 2007 Collingwood Premiership jersey has pride of place at Trevor Sharp’s Moonrise Estate. Along with the back story, the wine at Moonrise is pretty damm good too.

Warwick Wolves Colts made a welcome return to the winner’s circle last week after suffering their first defeat this season at their previous outing. The Wolves took some time to find their feet in their away game against Highfields. They were able to turn an opportunity into a goal when Joey Kelly powered home a great shot which dipped over the keepers head and into the back of the net to take a one-nil lead. Ten minutes later Harry Whittaker provided Noah Dwan with a perfect through ball which he slotted coolly past the advancing keeper. Although the Wolves held a two-nil lead the game was far from one-way traffic. Keeper Joey Brown was called upon on a number of occasions to make difficult saves. Kelly turned from scorer to provider creating opportunities for his team mates to score. Noah Dwan found the back of the net for his second which gave the Wolves a three-nil lead. It was a good win by the Colts and another hardworking performance from Jacob Walters in midfield was well supported by Bryon Whitaker and Mick Westerhout in defence. This weekend the Wolves play West Wanderers White in away game.

Scratch the Granite surface of Stanthorpe and you never know what sporting gems you might see Taking pride of place on the wall in the Moonrise Estate cellar door is a framed and signed Collingwood jersey. Now that’s not something you see every day in this area and it pricked my curiosity. The Magpies are an AFL Club, much like Manly in the NRL that polarise fans. There are the love them fans and the hate them camps and very little in between. So when I asked Trevor Sharpe about his obvious Collingwood allegiance I was surprised to learn the back story. Sharp explained he is the grandson of one of Collingwood’s greats, Jim Sharp who was one of the most popular AFL players ever to pull on a jersey and one of the greatest administrators in the AFL’s history. Trevor Sharp’s grandfather originally played for Fitzroy, the club that decades later would birth the Brisbane Lions. After a long career with Fitzroy which included the captaincy and back to back premiership wins Sharp was recruited by Collingwood following an internal dispute at Fitzroy. When Sharp arrived at the Magpies he was a player who enjoyed a standing in the game unmatched at the time. He was widely regarded as a one of the best backs and safest marks in the game. In only his third season with Collingwood he was elected captain by his teammates but declined the honour believing that Jock McHale more worthy. Vice Captain Dick Lee immediately stood down giving Sharp the role. Sharp’s playing career came to an abrupt end three games into the 1912 season after an accidental collision shattered his leg. Collingwood and the AFL world was shattered also. There is a undeniable similarity between Sharp and Bill Strickland, the first of Collingwood’s great captains. Both enjoyed distinguished careers at other clubs, captained those clubs and came to the ‘Pies late in their careers, leaving their former clubs because of internal disputes. After arriving at Victoria Park both became passionate Magpies. Their involvement extending well beyond their playing days. Sharp unfortunately did not get the opportunity to emulate Strickland’s heroic’s on field but his throughout his journey with Collingwood he left an indelible mark on the club and the game. Collingwood realised Sharp’s unique ability as an administrator. In addition to his great football talent he was well educated, well spoken and already a successful businessman. With his standing in the game and on field experience he was elected vice president. When the President resigned only a few months into the job, Sharp was chosen his replacement becoming the club’s third President. The year was 1913 and it is a measure of the regard the club had for the former Fitzroy captain. He served as President for the next 11 years guiding the club through the turbulent years of the First World War and to Premiership flags in 1917 and 1919. Sharp’s Presidency was very hands on . In 1917 when a player failed to arrive for the final game of the home and away season, Sharp at 35 and having not pulled on a boot since his retirement pulled on the beloved Magpie jersey for one last game against Geelong. Whether or not he still had the stamina to last the game will never be known as he tore his knee cartilage badly ending a very short comeback. To this day he remains the only club President to have taken the field while in office.(like to see Eddie Maguire try that). He stepped down as President in 1924 but his association with the club did not end. He was Patron of the club from 19241945 and a Collingwood Life member. Throughout his tenure as President and beyond Sharp proved to be a visionary and mooted many ideas that came to fruition decades later.
