Tanks for the generosity Lara CFA has raised $148,000 for a new light tanker a year earlier than expected thanks to “astounding” community support, according to brigade captain Roger Buckle. “We expected it to take 12 to 18 months and we’ve achieved it in less than five,” he told the Independent this week. “It was a continuous flow from the kind and generous people of Lara – every day you would see small donations come in.” Lara District Community Bank and Bisinella Developments contributed $50,000 and $25,000 respectively, while local businesses, groups and individuals donated the rest. “We can’t mention everyone, but our sincere thanks to every person and group who donated,” Mr Buckle said. A shortage of components due to COVID-19 has caused a delay in the build of the ultra-light tanker, now due for delivery in mid-2021. An analysis of fire risk in Lara determined a need for a manoeuvrable vehicle able fight blazes in areas not accessible to larger tankers.

Avalon ready for take-off By Luke Voogt Avalon Airport is ready for flights to the Gold Coast and Adelaide on December 18, according to chief executive Justin Giddings. “If needed, we could have a flight this afternoon,” he said yesterday. “We just need to turn the lights on, call up the security company to staff our security equipment and then we’d be ready to welcome passengers. “It’s more about the availability of aircraft, and getting flight crew, engineers and other staff re-certified.” Mr Giddings yesterday urged the Queensland
and South Australian governments to announce dates for the reopening of their borders with Victoria. “If the Queensland government is expecting people to come up, they need to make that call immediately,” he said. “I want them to make a decision this week.” This would give airlines time to prepare, and allow families to save, book leave and research their itinerary, Mr Giddings said. “People don’t usually just go out and buy a Queensland ticket and then go the next day. People are making decisions now on whether to go to Queensland over the Christmas period.
“A lot of families will want the certainty of being able to fly before they book.” Mr Giddings’ call comes as Victoria recorded its 13th consecutive day with no new COVID-19 cases. “The Victorian government has done a great job in almost eliminating the virus and it’s time to start rewarding people by letting them fly,” he said. Victoria now has just three active cases compared to eight in Queensland, although none of the latter figure resulted from community transmission. Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young has foreshadowed the state could
reopen to Victorians as early as December 1, but the state’s government had yet to make an announcement when the Independent went to press yesterday. With destinations such as Bali off-limits, Mr Giddings said there was great demand in Geelong for travel to the Gold Coast over the holiday period. “It’s an incredible part of the world.” The Independent understands Jetstar is assessing the possibility of operating flights from Avalon Airport to the Gold Coast and Adelaide from December 18. ■ Avalon

Two mayoral contenders emerge By Luke Voogt Two contenders have emerged for Surf Coast Shire mayor with experienced councillor Heather Wellington and fresh face Libby Stapleton declaring their interest this week. Cr Wellington, who won more than a third of the primary vote in Winchelsea ward, called for “cultural change” and transparency within the shire’s administration. “I’ve made my position clear and I got a very strong endorsement of that position from the community,” she said. Previously council had failed to ensure the
shire was accountable and acting in ratepayers’ interests, Cr Wellington said. She believed she had the “knowledge, experience and community confidence” to lead cultural change in an organisation as “large and complex” as the shire. Cr Stapleton, who won Anglesea’s primary vote, declared she was “certainly considering” running for mayor. “I have been encouraged to do it, which is a positive start,” she said. Cr Stapleton hoped to build a “strong and respectful” council that “works well together” for “a new way forward”.
Adrian Schonfelder and Gary Allen declined to declare or rule out running. Cr Schonfelder backed Cr Hodge after her “excellent job in unprecedented circumstances”, while councillors Allen and Hodge declined to divulge their “informal discussions” with other councillors. Crs Paul Barker and Liz Pattison ruled out running due to work and family commitments respectively. Crs Mike Bodsworth and Kate Gazzard did not return the Independent’s calls prior to deadline.
“The community has obviously spoken when they’ve elected seven new councillors,” she said. Cr Stapleton said former mayors Libby Mears and Ruth MacGowan would mentor her. Cr Wellington raised concerns about Ms Mears, currently chairing state government’s Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority, potentially mentoring the mayor. But Cr Stapleton said she had been transparent about the relationship and would follow council guidelines to avoid conflicts of interest. Previous mayor Rose Hodge and councillors

Family’s ride of a lifetime for Matilda Three-year-old Matilda Rickard faces possible heart surgery in February, prompting her family to hit the road last Monday for a long-anticipated ride of a lifetime. Matilda has Down syndrome and has already undergone two operations for a heart defect. Her Drysdale family had planned the 350-kilometre Great Ocean Road adventure since completing a 500-kilometre ride in Tasmania in 2015, mother-of-seven Jacqui Rickard explained. “My son Levi (15) has got Matilda in the trailer,” she said on Wednesday, after they rode 175km in eight days to Blanket Bay.
“I said, ‘one of you guys have to take either Matilda or Adeline’ (8) and he said, ‘Matilda, because she doesn’t talk as much’.” Initially they had hoped to cycle during “more stable weather” next year, but Matilda’s possible surgery date and the COVID-19 silver lining of less traffic changed that, Jacqui said. “There are no tour buses, no international drivers or no Melbourne drivers. It’s never been quieter and it probably never will be.” Unlike road trips, the kids had been too busy cycling to argue, she said. “They wait for me at the top of every hill and they call me the grey nomad, because I’m slower,” she laughed.
Her husband James had been unable to join them after starting a new IT job but was on “24-hour standby”, she said. He drove almost three hours on Tuesday night to deliver his bike when one of the boy’s derailers broke, before driving home the next morning. As Jacqui prepared for the return journey, she swore never to use a Google Maps “shortcut” again after struggling along a track “suitable for hiking” between Apollo Bay and Blanket Bay on Monday. “That was quite an adventure that we’re not keen to repeat.” Luke Voogt
Flights from Avalon to Sydney are set to take off on December 18 after the New South Wales government’s announcement last week the Victorian border will reopen. The twice-daily return service will be Jetstar’s first flight from Avalon in almost nine months, the airline announced on Tuesday. “We’ve seen huge demand for flights between Victoria and New South Wales since last week’s announcement,” Jetstar chief executive officer Gareth Evans said. “As well as providing a direct link to Sydney, the resumption of services will help boost tourism back into Victoria, with Avalon being the gateway to the state’s famous Great Ocean Road. “We’re excited to bring back low fares to Avalon, helping to reconnect family and friends and give more people the opportunity for a holiday after what has been a tough period for many.” This will be the first time Jetstar has operated between the two destinations since March 31, and represents about 40 per cent of flights on the route compared to the same time last year. Mr Evans said Jetstar would continue to monitor the easing of restrictions between Victoria and other states and add more flights from Avalon according to demand. “This is an exciting milestone in rebuilding our network – providing more low fares to more people and also getting more of our team back in work.” The first flights from Sydney to Avalon are scheduled to take off at 11.55am and 6.30pm on December 18. Return flights will operate from Avalon at 2pm and 8.45pm. Details: jetstar.com.

Hard road almost over for year 12s Family health problems, a concussion, a twice-postponed driving test and a global pandemic – “it can’t get much worse” says Geelong High School year 12 student Jasmine King. She and St Joseph’s College student Oliver Henry speak to Luke Voogt about the pressure of exams and how 2020 has taught them to cope with almost anything.
J
asmine King was “getting ready for a good year” after her godparents “very kindly” gifted her a Hyundai I30 – her first car – in January. “But this year was not what I expected,” she said 10 months later, after completing her English exam on Tuesday alongside 41,000 VCE students. “I’m relieved that’s over. I never want to do it again. “I finished the three essays, which I think a lot of people didn’t, and I understood the three topics. “I just struggled to remember quotes and make it sound good. By the end of it I was just like, ‘I want to go home’.” The exam was just the latest challenge for Jasmine in a year that began unravelling when COVID-19 hit Australia in March. The virus put her dad “at severe risk ” due to his bronchiectasis, doctors warned. He has since been working at home due to the condition, which causes scarring to the airways. “My dad’s a big tough dude and to see him worry about something really made think that it’s serious,” Jasmine said. With her mum dealing with a back injury while working in mental health, Jasmine pitched in by helping with the groceries. She would drive to the supermarket on her L-plates and do the shopping while her dad stayed in the car. She had hoped she could help out more when she got her P-plates. Before the pandemic hit she booked a test for her 18th birthday on June 18. But a massive VicRoads backlog from the first lockdown postponed her test. She rebooked for August 6 – the earliest day possible – only for Victoria’s second wave to cause the cancellation of that too. “I was thinking, ‘what’s the point of being 18?’” she said. “All I wanted was the freedom of being able to drive. It was so disappointing and heart-breaking. I cried, and I’m not usually a crier.” She also sustained a concussion playing football for St Albans Park’s under-18 girls’ team in the last minute of the side’s only game for the year in July. Her Jiu Jitsu classes halted, she lost her job at an ice cream shop and she was two months too young for JobKeeper. But she had some luck on September 28 when she finally took her driving test. Her heart skipped a beat when her driving instructor asked, “do you know what you did wrong?” “I was like, ‘oh my god!’” Luckily, Jasmine had immediately corrected her speed after going slightly over the limit, the

instructor explained. “I cried happy tears in VicRoads just before they took my picture.” The Geelong High School captain now has three exams left after she dropped PE earlier in the year, as she was struggling to cope. “Dropping a subject could have disadvantaged me but I think that was the best decision I could have made at the time,” she said. While Jasmine had enjoyed studying in her own time, she said remote learning had made class discussion very difficult. “Everyone would be on mute with their cameras off,” she said. “It was an uncomfortable experience. I don’t think it was the teacher’s fault – it was just the online experience.” This, along with her maths teacher being replaced with a substitute, was particularly detrimental in maths and English, she said. “If you weren’t organised or couldn’t do the work yourself, you were stuffed.” She applied for special consideration under the Special Entry Access Scheme, which has new calculating processes to determine the disadvantages of COVID-19.
Oliver Henry. (Louisa Jones) 220923_07
The application included questions about internet access, study space at home and COVID-related hardship. “I feel as though everyone needs special consideration for this year,” she said. But 2020 had helped her bond with her younger sister at home and boosted her resilience, she said. And her improved remote study skills had increased her university options in pursuit of a career as an occupational therapist, she said. “It’s built me up into a stronger person.”
St Joseph’s College year 12 student and Geelong Falcon’s player Oliver Henry shared that sentiment. “I’ve built up some resilience in a tough year,” he said after finishing his English exam. “Three hours for three essays isn’t fun but I prepared well, so I think I went as well as I could. “Just a couple more exams to go. I’m looking forward to finishing up.” Like Jasmine, Oliver had missed class discussions but enjoyed learning independently. “A lot of people would say it’s a lot more challenging [than normal year 12] and I’d say the same,” he said. “I probably learn best from my school mates, and you also miss out on the social events like sporting days and graduation. “But you get to create your own structure and your own independence, and spend a lot more time with your family.” This year had been tough but “everyone in year 12 is in the same boat,” he said. “Now it’s exam time – time to show what our resilience has been like throughout the year.”

Adventure Park open Wallington’s Adventure Park has received the green light to reopen on November 23 for a maximum capacity of 500 people. But managing director Leanne Salmon said the park would work with other amusement venues to lobby state government to increase the “not financially viable” capacity limit.
Pool closed The children’s pool at Eastern Beach remains closed despite other indoor and outdoor pools having reopened across the city. Council acting attraction director Tim Ellis said the pool was closed for maintenance works and that City Hall was working with Life Saving Victoria on the return of lifeguards to Eastern Beach.

Kids jump into athletics Jemilla Campbell is getting ready and set to dash 100m and throw her troubles away when Corio Little Athletics returns tomorrow. “I’m very, very excited, because I really missed athletics,” the Lara 13-year-old said. The restart will be the first time in almost eight months that Jemilla has torn up the track since COVID-19 hit in March. “It was quite upsetting because I missed all my friends,” she said. She joined a few other little athletes testing out the track at Goldsworthy Reserve on Tuesday night ahead of the official resumption. “It was very tempting to hug them but I restrained myself,” she said. “I got to chat to them again so that was very nice.” Jemilla looked forward to competing in her
favourite events – the 100m and discus. Instructors had taught her to channel her emotion into discuss and she would pour all her anger into the object before throwing it away, she explained. “You just throw it and think ‘ah … I feel better now’.” She has kept fit during the lockdowns by running with her pet labrador on nearby walking tracks. She has also trained with a discus in her family’s large backyard and, thankfully, has a “friendly neighbour” for the odd occasion she clears the fence. Council on Tuesday announced Geelong and Corio Little Athletics would resume tomorrow at their respective city-run venues.

MY GEELONG Libby Bate is living proof “you get out of life what you put it into it”. The Lara local speaks to Luke Voogt about volunteering for a multitude of organisations in a half century serving her community. I’m 73 and Geelong born-and-bred. I married my husband Allan and moved in with him at Lara in August 1969. During the Lara bushfires in January 1969, Allan did what he could, even though he wasn’t in the fire brigade. He joined the brigade immediately after and then a ladies auxiliary started, which I was a part of. I began teaching primary students in 1968 and retired as Lara Primary School assistant principal in 2002. In 1989 I exchanged jobs, homes and even cars with a teacher in Fair Oaks, California. Allan, who was a plumber, became ‘Mr Mum’ at home and my two teenage daughters went to the local high school. I’ve been to South America, Africa, China and Vietnam. A group of us go campervanning off-road. We’ve travelled to Cape York, Mount Isa and up the Maralinga to Emu Road, which was specifically built for British nuclear tests in South Australia. What organisations do you volunteer for? I’m currently the president of Cancer After Care Group Geelong. The group began in 1978 to support cancer patients and became instrumental for getting treatment services to Geelong. We’ve raised more than $4 million for Andrew Love Cancer Centre over the years. Allan’s mother Gwen was a founding member. When she passed away in ’85, her husband Ted took over and I later took over from him. In 2011 Allan passed away from brain cancer. I’m a founding board member of the Lara District Community Bank and Lara Chamber of Commerce, and I’m still involved with both.
I’m involved with the Vestry at Holy Trinity Church Lara, Lara Food and Wine Festival, the Lara Australia Day breakfast and fundraising for Lara Fire Brigade. God willing, the 2021 Avalon Airshow will be my 10th as a volunteer. I’ve also been on the Lara Secondary College school council. Knowing that you’re helping make your community a better place to live is its own reward. What are your favourite things to do locally? I’m a bit biased because I like Lara. I like Millers Café – the owner Scott Miller uses the local butcher and local products. To me, he’s what community’s about – looking after one another. I like the peacefulness of Serendip Sanctuary. How are you coping with COVID-19? I’ve rediscovered reading and I’m exploring some of the old classics – like Thomas Hardy. I’m sleeping in more. My younger daughter, her husband and two kids live with me so I’ve not felt lonely. I can’t wait to get on a long train journey. I’ve been on The Ghan, the India Pacific and a brewery train in South Africa. I love to go to stage shows, which I’ve really missed during COVID-19. What’s something about you that people might not know? My first six weeks of teaching were not what I expected – I taught at pools in Melbourne. I couldn’t swim to save myself and here I was teaching kids to swim!

Survey examines future of news Newspaper readers in Geelong are being urged to have their say on the future of country media in Australia’s biggest survey on local news. The survey, launched nationally last week, is part of the largest study of its kind in Australia, running for three years with almost $250,000 backing from the Australian Research Council, one of the Federal Government’s main competitive research funding agencies. Deakin University, RMIT University and Country Press Australia, the peak regional media organisation, of which this newspaper is a member, are leading the study. The project’s lead investigator, Deakin Associate Professor Kristy Hess, said the future

of local newspapers depended on support from local audiences. The survey aims to give people a voice on ways to improve the sustainability of their local paper. “If you read your local newspaper, then it’s absolutely vital you fill in this survey to show your support for local news. We are depending on you,” she said.
“We want to hear your ideas and feedback on the role of country newspapers in these digital times. We want to know what the paper means to you and how it might improve into the future.” Project partner and Country Press Australia executive director, Bruce Morgan, said the project was as much about regional communities as it was about local media businesses. “Local media outside metropolitan Australia is very much the journal of record for the towns and regions it represents,” he said. “It is not exaggerating to say that, should we lose local media representation, it will impact
not just on the fabric of those communities, but the very principles of democracy. That is, the ability to record, champion, challenge and hold accountable. “That is why this highly-credible, well-funded research is vital to those communities and their future,” Mr Morgan said. The survey should take up to 10 minutes and will ask a range of questions that relate to your views on local newspapers. All participants have a chance to win one of 10 new-release Apple iPads. The survey will run until the end of November. Visit this link now to start the survey: localnewsinnovation.org
YOUR SAY Haunting parallels In January 1919, two months after the armistice was signed, the people of Australia had become aware that the dreaded Spanish influenza had reached our shores. The ports of Sydney and Melbourne were under strict quarantine. In May the epidemic eased in NSW, masks were no longer mandatory, and many cinemas, theatres, race courses and schools were re-opened. However, in Brisbane a new outbreak caused places of public entertainment to be closed. On Tuesday November 11th a nation-wide two-minute silence was held, followed by celebrations for the first anniversary of the Armistice. Thus, with haunting parallels to our present time, this was the beginning of the traditional Remembrance Day services that are still observed 101 years later. Melva Stott Anglesea
Aged back Andrews Daniel Andrews’ hardline approach against the coronavirus enjoys remarkably strong support among the aged and ageing. This demographic views rolling lockdowns and self-isolation directives as the best way of prolonging their lives. Which is why they religiously use face masks when outside their homes and why so many have been prepared to be imprisoned in their homes. Many older Australians view younger members of society as a very real threat to their lives because of their lack of discipline in this area. A viewpoint supported by many medical experts, internationally. Michael J Gamble Belmont
‘Sort of’ free I recently received and email that contained a reference to countries that do not allow their people to travel overseas. Those countries are: North Korea, Cuba and, lastly, Australia. The latter, us, is extraordinary, especially given that the road – or airport – is open to Chinese students wanting to attend universities here, even while Aussies are stuck overseas unable to get home. Should we then alter the national anthem to “… young and sort of free?” Gary Oraniuk Geelong West

Ferries set sail once again By Luke Voogt
‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY! GEELONG’S ICONIC FLOATING CHRISTMAS TREE TAKES CENTRE STAGE THIS FESTIVE SEASON.
Geelong and Portarlington ferries to Melbourne will resume tomorrow following the dismantling of the state government’s ‘ring of steel’, the services’ operator has announced. Port Phillip Ferries on Monday confirmed its twice-daily return services would resume after Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday announced a further easing of COVID-19 restrictions. “Port Phillip Ferries are excited to once again set sail,” the company’s chief executive officer Murray Rance said. “We look forward to welcoming those looking for a day trip or weekend escape either in regional Victoria or Melbourne.” Mr Rance assured potential passengers that safety was Port Phillip Ferries’ “number one priority”. “With services operating in both directions, we provide a safe and leisurely way of travelling across Port Phillip Bay. “We have implemented a number of measures to keep passengers safe on-board during this time including pre-booked tickets
only, contactless boarding, reduced capacities, social hygiene measures and distanced seating.” Port Phillip Ferries plans to increase the twice-daily services to four days a week, running Thursdays to Sundays, beginning on December 3. A cruise on the Geelong Flyer between Steampacket Quay on Geelong waterfront and Docklands, Melbourne, takes about 90 minutes, according to Port Phillip Ferries. The Bellarine Express takes about 70 minutes to travel to and from Portarlington to Docklands, according to the company. Port Phillip Ferries on Monday promoted Geelong’s artistic, cultural and dining attractions, along with Bellarine Peninsula wineries, restaurants and nature-based activities in a bid to boost local tourism. Melburnians can now visit regional Victoria after state government scrapped the 25-kilometre travel limit on Monday. Bookings are essential and only passengers with pre-booked tickets will be allowed to board the ferry. Each ferry is equipped with 20 bike racks. Details: portphillipferries.com.au.

The fallen remembered WWII veteran Cec Browning has barely missed a Remembrance Day in 71 years, and would not let a global pandemic or rain stop him on Wednesday. “I might have missed one or two over the years,” the 96-year-old navy veteran said. Mr Browning joined Torquay RSL members at Point Danger for one of several services across Geelong and the Surf Coast, with limited numbers due to COVID-19 restrictions. He remembered watching Japanese kamikaze pilots slam their planes into the HMAS Australia and the “poor devils” he would later ferry back to the hospital. “Occasionally you think of them – especially
on a day like today,” he said. He watched the hellish scenes aboard the nearby HMAS Manoora during the liberation of the Philippines. “The planes would explode and the fuel would catch fire,” he said. “There were a hell of a lot of ships there.” After joining the navy as a 17-year-old from Coburg in 1942, Mr Browning helped ferry Australian soldiers in a landing craft to Pacific islands during the war. “I made friends for life. As far as I know, there’s only three of us alive from our ship.” Luke Voogt 13 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 13 November, 2020
We’re building big in Victoria’s south west More than $70 billion is being invested into transport projects across our state meaning safer and easier connections for you. Upgrades to make rail travel easier
A smoother and safer drive for you
The Surf Coast is growing and Victoria’s Big Build is delivering important new transport infrastructure to get you home safer and sooner.
We opened the $117 million Drysdale Bypass to traffic earlier this year. Traffic is moving well and the number of trucks on High Street has been dramatically reduced.
There will be more frequent and reliable trains on the Geelong and Warrnambool lines as part of Regional Rail Revival upgrades of every passenger rail line in Victoria. We’re also upgrading Waurn Ponds Station as part of a major investment in the Geelong Line, with a second platform, new pedestrian overpasses and new track to be delivered. On the Warrnambool Line, we’ll add new track so trains can pass each other, improve safety at level crossings by adding boom gates, warning bells and lights and upgrade signalling. These improvements will allow a fifth weekday return service between Warrnambool and Melbourne.
With the bypass open, visitors to the Bellarine will enjoy more consistent travel times, especially during the busier summer holiday season where an extra 5,000 vehicles move through Drysdale daily. The project included the construction of a new pedestrian underpass which links the town centre with the education, arts and sporting precinct on Peninsula Drive.
On the Warrnambool Line, we’ve upgraded 12 level crossings to make them safer. Boom gates, bells and flashing lights were installed from Hunts Road, Moriac to Station Road, Garvoc. Train detection technology will improve safety along the line. We’re also adding new tracks so trains can pass each other and upgrading signalling to allow a fifth weekday return service.
A new 25-metre arch bridge was also constructed over the Bellarine railway line and rail trail, featuring a striking arch design and split stone finish which complements the local Drysdale landscape. More than 120,000 trees, shrubs, grasses and ground coverings indigenous to the Bellarine have been planted along the bypass to enhance the roadside reserves and conserve animal habitats.
Many of the roads and rail lines that connect south west Victoria to Melbourne’s suburbs and the CBD will benefit from the major projects underway closer to the city. The Metro Tunnel will improve travel times to and from Melbourne by adding a new tunnel under the city, saving you up to 10 minutes to Parkville and up to 5 minutes to St Kilda Road.

FOR LIFE NINE, 9.30pm
Based on the true story of Isaac Wright Jr., a music producer wrongfully convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to life in prison in 1991, For Life tells the tale of how he went on to fight the system from the inside. Nicholas Pinnock (pictured) plays the down-on-his-luck Aaron Wallace in this re-imagining, which also stars rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Power). Wallace begins his fight by training to become a lawyer while in jail before going on to represent his fellow inmates.

BLOOD AND TREASURE TEN/WIN, 9.30pm
If you were to cross Indiana Jones, James Bond and Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft, you’d be close to describing this fun action-adventure. Premiering tonight in a double-episode, Blood And Treasure follows Danny McNamara (Matt Barr, pictured), an antiquities expert who teams up with art thief Lexi Vaziri (Sofia Pernas, pictured) to hunt down Karim Farouk (Oded Fehr), a terrorist who steals ancient artefacts to fund his attacks. The pair find themselves embroiled in a globecrossing game of dangerous espionage with Interpol agent Gwen Karlsson (Katia Winter) hot on their heels, after items are taken from the recently discovered tomb of Antony and Cleopatra.

Fifty years and 22 films precede Skyfall, which, on its release, was lauded as the best James Bond film ever. This is James Bond reinvented and Daniel Craig (pictured) gives such a strong performance that we can forgive him for the forgettable Quantum of Solace. Judi Dench as M is practically the co-star of this outing, with plenty of screen time to show off her considerable acting chops. After a botched mission where 007 is presumed shot at M’s misguided order, she is pressured by new boss Mallory (Ralph Fiennes) to retire. Of course, she’s not quite ready for that yet and, with a brilliant baddie in Javier Bardem, breathtaking stunts and an Oscarwinning theme song from Adele, Skyfalll will win over even the most staunch Bond critics. On the West Gate Freeway, four extra lanes are taking shape to improve traffic flow on this vital link. A second river crossing will also help heavy trucks get to the Port of Melbourne to boost Victoria’s economy.
More than 300 road improvements are planned as part of a record investment in south west regional roads. As a part of this work, Regional Roads Victoria will repair and resurface roads, fix potholes, stabilise cliffs and bridges, cut grass and clear vegetation to improve safety in the area.
The Metro Tunnel will free up space in the City Loop by taking our busiest train lines through a new tunnel under the city. It will improve travel times for everyone travelling to Parkville and St Kilda Road.

‘Scribbler’ opens gallery By Luke Voogt “Burned out” after years driving road trains across Australia and running tours, Fyansford local Bruce Kirby leapt into art. Then 52, Kirby had spent several years driving trucks and operating tours to the Great Ocean Road, the Grampians and Phillip Island. “You’re doing 16-hour days,” the 60-year-old said. “They’re taxing jobs – I was pretty much burnt out from both of them.” Wanting a change but struggling to find a new path in life, Kirby thought back to his best subjects at school – art and sport. “I was too old to make a living out of sport,” he laughed. So he began studying visual arts at The Gordon and within weeks decided, “this was what I was going to do”. Eight years later, Kirby opened a fine art gallery in central Geelong. He said he had grown tired of paying up to 40 to 50 per cent in commission fees when he sold work on display at other galleries. “I’ve learnt to live on just about nothing to do what I’m doing now. I’m lucky I’ve got a good gallery and my rent’s reasonable.” He initially opened the gallery just one day before Victoria’s second lockdown, which forced him to close it again. But last Monday, with restrictions easing amid a more positive outlook for Victoria, he reopened Bruce Kirby Fine Art Gallery. His unique style was a few years in the
making, he explained. “I call it sophisticated scribbling and it’s done with ink fineliner,” he said. “All I do is scribble but I’ve learnt to make an image from it. I’m the only one in Australia that does what I’m doing.” After a few years painting abstract pieces, Kirby decided to experiment with sketching using his photos as a starting point. “I have a photography background,” he said. “The artwork evolves as you go.” When he sold two of his first pieces, a car and flamingo, for several thousand dollars each, he realised he could make a living off the style. His work is a gradual process, given any mistake with the fineliner can be fatal for the piece. “You’ve got to take your time and be patient – some of my drawings can take between 250 to 350 hours,” he said. Kirby recently completed a visual arts degree and started painting portraits of celebrities to earn money on the side. One patron bought his painting of David Bowie to send to their son living in Manhattan, he said. That particular talent is on display on the outside walls of his gallery, with a mural of late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and a soon-to-be-complete painting of the late Amy Winehouse. “That’s the first street art I’ve done,” he said. “Geelong’s got some amazing murals and laneway art, so I’m pretty proud to be part of that.” Details: brucekirbyfineart.com

Live music back at Potato Shed By Luke Voogt Live music is set for a comeback at the Potato Shed next month with five local musicians playing at the opening of a photo exhibition. “I know the hardship they’ve been through with the lockdown in the performing arts industry,” exhibition photographer Ivan Kemp said. “It’s been a long time and some of them are doing it really tough … I’m trying to give them as much publicity as possible.” Kemp has been the centre’s photographer since moving to Portarlington in 2019, and is holding a free 12-month photography exhibition of some of his favourite onstage shots. We are Back! - Artists of the Potato Shed begins December 4 and captures moments in the performances of 23 actors, musicians and singers at the venue over the past 18 months. “In every performance there are some really special moments,” Kemp said. “You get this anticipation that something is going to happen and you shoot it. When you see some of the photos, you’ll see what I mean.” Each photo features a bio of the artist or group and the story of how COVID-19 has affected their livelihood. Joining Kemp outside the shed from 7pm to 9pm on December 4 are local musical family The Von Robertsons and singer-songwriter Jack Meredith. Many artists had performed in online shows from the shed but Kemp said playing in “front of three or four video cameras” was not the same as a live gig. “They’re very keen to get going, I can tell you that.” Currently the shed has a 50-person limit for the event, which will also be live-streamed.

“It’s subject to council approval and restrictions, as per normal. It looks like it should be OK at this stage but if things change, that will change,” Kemp said. Von Robertsons member Heath Robertson was thrilled to play live music. “I’m just looking forward to getting back in front of people again,” he said. “I think [the show is] great. It’s showcasing the local independent artists that have really struggled through this time.” The multi-talented instrumentalist said
he had created more than a dozen new songs during the pandemic. “I’ve written an album worth of songs that I’m really happy with and then another five to 10,” he said. “I’ll be able to get feedback on my new original material and see how it goes down with the audience.” Heath said his music had “taken quite a turn” from the surfy blues it “used to be” to a more folky and modern sound. “I’ve been trying to work on my lyrics and melodies,” he said.
The 19-year-old studies sound production in Melbourne – online this year – and plays and records drums, guitar and vocals for his tracks. “I just record everything that I hear in the song and then mix it,” he said. “Because I’ve been exposed to music from such a young age, I tend to feel the rhythm and the timing.” Kemp thanked Geelong council and Portarlington and Drysdale Bendigo Bank branches for supporting the event. The event is free but bookings are required. Details: geelongaustralia.com.au/potatoshed.

FEATURING ... MY BUSINESS
Best dressed at Beach & Bay Every now and then it can almost feel like destiny that two people meet, at the right time and in the right place. That seems true for Jan McMillan and Jeanette Schwarze, the pair first meeting each other while working together at a now defunct Geelong-based business. Jan explains how their subsequent friendship went on to change the course of their lives – and in the process now caters to clothes-loving, fashion-conscious women living in seven widespread coastal locations. “Jeanette and I discovered we shared a past, both of us having worked years ago at Myer – one as an Apparel Buyer and the other as a Store Operations Leader,” Jan says. “We also found that our skills and experience were complementary, and we shared similar goals and business ethics. “When the 30-year-old business (Beach Club) closed its 13 outlets – including our workplace – due to the owner’s retirement, we immediately saw an opportunity to start our own business and rebrand six of the shops, launching a brand-new one in Barwon Heads as well. “We’re now collectively Beach & Bay, delivering a fab range of quality clothing that women love for its classic quality and comfort, especially suited for casual coastal life.” The dynamic duo loved the challenge of starting the new business, especially when they were able to save 18 terrific team members from redundancy and enabling them to continue close relationships formed with loyal customers. Jan and Jeanette, passionate about all things clothes and accessories, were also committed to providing great brands. “We carry the Yarra Trail, Foil, Jump and Betty Basics labels, for example, as well as
Kerry and Kerry, the Beach & Bay Team in Queenscliff and Torquay. (Supplied)
clothing from our own Beach & Bay label. Think lovely linens, stylish tops and pants, dresses oozing style and comfort, the perfect sweater… “We continue to add exciting on-trend
clothes and accessories, and the pieces we select complement each other. This makes it easy for our customers to put pieces together, leaving our stores with a cohesive look and that wonderful ‘whole new outfit’ feeling.”
All of the stores adhere to strict COVID-safe protocols, the super-friendly service and advice is exceptional, and the shopping experience is exciting – never a chore. Ahhh … the beach and bay life.

Health professionals have seen a significant increase in foot, ankle, knee and leg pain and injuries recently due to people wearing non-supportive shoes around the house for extended periods during Covid-19 lockdown. And they predict post lockdown may see a further increase as people return to general activity, sports and recreational pursuits. Dr David Kavanagh from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Geelong West explains: “With people returning to normal work and exercise after an extended period of decreased physical activity, the body can lose condition increasing the risk of overuse syndromes and injuries,” he says. “We recommend a gradual approach to increasing activity to try and avoid this.” Foot & Leg Pain Clinics has been successfully assisting adults, children, seniors and professional athletes with common and complex musculoskeletal and degenerative conditions including general pain, soft tissue injuries (new and old), degenerative joint
conditions, bursitis, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and children’s growth and development concerns. Dr Kavanagh says they’ve even assisted joint and tissue regeneration for arthritic conditions and helped many to avoid or delay surgery such as knee replacements. “Fortunately, thanks to the latest medical research we have a better understanding of the body and how we can assist it to function better and heal itself,” he says. “If we can look past the surface symptoms to uncover the contributing factors like faulty foot and joint function, repetitive stress patterns, biomechanical weaknesses and specific lifestyle factors, then combine that information with natural regenerative treatments and load management strategies, we’re able to treat these issues better than ever before.” Foot & Leg Pain Clinics in Geelong West. Cats welcome Higgins By Luke Voogt Geelong Cats traded midfielders Nakia Cockatoo and Lachie Fogarty on Wednesday, before welcoming Kangaroos veteran Shaun Higgins to the club. The Cats traded Cockatoo to Brisbane for a future third round pick from Melbourne that the Lions acquired in an earlier trade. The promising but injury-plagued midfielder-forward returned home from the Cats’ Gold Coast hub in September for the birth of his first child and surgery for a wrist injury sustained in a practice match. Geelong selected Cockatoo, now 24, at pick 10 in the 2014 national draft. But a series of injuries has limited the exciting player to just 34 games, in which he kicked 25 goals. Cats coach Chris Scott has predicted that Cockatoo will be a “very, very good player” in the next seven to eight years. The Cats traded Fogarty and selection 38 to Carlton in return for picks 30 and 51 in this year’s national draft. Fogarty was originally selected in the 2017 AFL draft from the Western Jets. He debuted in the opening round of 2018 and went on to play 15 games in his first season, but was slowed by injury in 2019. Fogarty, 21, forced his way back into the

team this season and has played a total of 23 games and kicked six goals in his three years with the Cats. “We have really enjoyed having both Lachie and Nakia at our club and wish them well at their new teams,” Geelong’s recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells said. Later on Wednesday the Cats announced they had traded pick 30 for 32-year-old North Melbourne midfielder Shaun Higgins. Higgins has played 237 games and kicked 224 goals with the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne.
He earned All-Australian honours in 2018 and won the Kangaroos’ best and fairest in both 2017 and 2018. “We have always liked Shaun as a player and we are happy that we could work with Shaun, his management and North Melbourne to get this trade completed,” Wells said. “Shaun is a very talented and accomplished player and he can fill a number of roles. We are looking forward to seeing him in Geelong colours.” Higgins’ sister Danielle is a member of the Cats AFLW line-up.

Snapper are still dominating reports with the fantastic season we are having continuing to get better and better. The outer harbour still remains the area to be, with most parts producing great reports. Clifton Springs through to Leopold in the shallower water is holding a fair share of smaller pinkies to about 40cm, with a few bigger fish among them. Casting soft plastics such as the Powerbait 4” Nemesis or Gulp Turtleback worms have been most effective and bait is sure to find plenty of fish too. There is plenty of other species on offer such as snook, flathead and whiting in the same areas and will eat similar lures and bait. Fishing the channel between Clifton Springs and Portarlington has been holding the bigger fish, with the average being about 4kg with reports of much larger fish among them too. Fishing the tide change has been key, with fresh calamari proving the number one bait. Fishing at night on the lead-up to high tide has seemed to be the best time to fish. In close to Clifton Springs, there is still plenty of squid on offer between the boat ramp and Hermsley Road – anywhere between 2.5 to 4 metres of water being the best depths with Gan Craft jigs absolutely smashing them. Whiting are still biting well right around the Peninsula and St Leonards still holds its title as the numbr one location with bag limit captures very achievable. Inside the Queenscliff harbour this week has seen some fantastic fishing for snapper, trevally and salmon. Casting soft plastics and working them around the structure and deeper holes has been most effective, once again the turtleback worms are proving to be the best. Adam from Trellys got down for a fish early in the week, landing a variety of species and a silver trevally that measured 53cm. The Barwon River has cleared up from the previous rain and the local redfin are fired up and hungry. Anywhere from Queens Park right through to Belmont have been fishing quite well with small hard body lures working a treat. There is still plenty of carp on offer too in the same areas with corn the bait of choice.
Cats AFLW side launches pre-season Geelong’s AFLW team has officially launched its pre-season campaign. Coach Paul Hood said he was excited to be back and planned to use the period to build team spirit, work on skills and integrate Geelong’s five new draftees. “It’s marvellous for us to be back at GMHBA Stadium training in what is a fantastic facility,” Hood told Cats Media. “I think the main focus pre-Christmas is building synergy again after some considerable time apart and for us putting in place some of that skill development work that we have done over the winter.
“[We will be] integrating our five draftees, of course, and making sure they feel comfortable and understand their teammates as best they can.” Hood has been impressed by the growth of the game in recent seasons. Last year teams shifted the ball quicker in transition and Hood expected that trend to continue. “I think AFLW has developed really quickly,” he said. “Teams [were] really successful at moving the ball quickly once they got out into the open. We will be looking to move the ball away
from congestion and into space as best as we can, and obviously making it difficult for the other team to do that while we are defending.” Former captain Melissa Hickey called time on her AFLW career at the end of last season but Hood believes it will be a great opportunity for other players to step up and fill the void. “Melissa’s leadership is going to be a big loss to the team,” he said. “She was a fantastic captain for us, but it is a great opportunity for a number of players to step up. “We are in a great position with a lot of people that have great leadership qualities.”
