BELLARINE’S NUMBER ONE NEWSPAPER
FREE FORTNIGHTLY
Sun and sand As the mercury soared into the 30s on Sunday, and with the state open to all, people flocked from everywhere to enjoy the Bellarine Peninsula. Voice photographer Lousia Jones caught up with Aurora and Milly having fun in the sand on the Barwon Heads side of the bridge. ■ More pictures: Page 15
Tourists flock to Bellarine By Justin Flynn Caravan and holiday parks across the Bellarine are struggling to keep up with demand as Melburnians flock to the area to enjoy their new-found ‘freedom’. With regional Victoria reopened to metropolitan Melbourne on November 9, the Bellarine Peninsula is starting to reap the rewards of the incoming tourist dollars. Queenscliff’s Big4 Beacon Resort has struggled to keep up with demand since travel restrictions on Melburnians were lifted. “Since the announcements, it’s been like the lights switched on again and all of a sudden the phones were ringing all day, every day,”
operations and marketing manager Emme Malone said. “It’s very exciting for our team, our town and our guests that we are able to welcome back Melbourne to the Bellarine. Since the ‘ring of steel’ was removed, we have taken over 400 bookings and booked 36 per cent more room nights than the same week last year, which is a huge relief after a tough six months for our industry. The park feels alive again, it’s so wonderful to see families reconnecting and kids running around having fun again.” Barwon Coast said there was high demand for bookings at its three parks – Barwon Heads Caravan Park, Riverview Family Caravan Park and Riverside Camping Ground.
“The minute the premier finished his press conference, the phones were ringing off the hook,” Barwon Coast manager accommodation services Daniel Payne said. “Our parks are getting a pile of interest. We already had a solid booking for summer, but we are anticipating a prolonged peak season.” Bellarine Bayside Holiday Park Portarlington manager Rod Newnham said it wasn’t just Melburnians who had flocked to the area. “Prior to the easing of restrictions, our bookings were slightly stronger than they were last year for the peak season and they are even more so now that Melburnians are able to visit regional Victoria again,” he said. “Interestingly, since the Portarlington
holiday park has reopened we have experienced a higher number of regional Victorians making bookings than in previous years. “We are seeing people taking advantage of the warmer weather and they are continuing to take advantage of being able to travel. “We have had an extremely positive response to packages and deals that we have extended, including those that are not available until February next year.” Collendina Caravan Park’s Joan Steains said she took 212 bookings last weekend and that “things were heating up”. “It’s great for the whole area because they go out for coffee and breakfast and everyone benefits,” she said.

By Justin Flynn A popular catchphrase these days is “we’re going to need a bigger boat”. But for Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes, it’s not a boat they need – it’s more shelf space to show off all their trophies. Alongside a swag of medals at the Great Aussie Pie Competition, Rolling Pin was judged to have the best plain pie in the country for its chunky mince pie. Rolling Pin, which has two shops in Ocean Grove and one each in Leopold and Queenscliff,
submitted 15 entries to the competition and won 15 medals, 13 of them gold. Apprentice Hayden Telehin won a gold medal for an ‘apprentice pie’ and came runner-up in the overall apprentice rankings countrywide. Rolling Pin general manager Nathan Williams said he was proud of his team after a challenging COVID-19 period. “It feels amazing,” he said. “We’ve got a pretty young team. Three of our guys only started in June. “April was extremely challenging, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove being heavily
reliant on tourists. They were scary times. “But there were periods where it was getting back to normal and then another lockdown and then you’re waiting for the tourists again. “Then all the Melbournites with their new-found freedom, which we welcomed, it’s been busy since.” Hayden Telehin said his gold medal-winning apprentice pie was created through “trial and error” and “practice”. The qualified chef launched head-first into an apprenticeship at Rolling Pin after moving from Williamstown. “I think my background really helped,” he
said. “Just knowing how it all works and then the rush and business side is second nature almost. “It’s the first pie comp I’ve ever entered and to come out second overall as an apprentice, I was pretty lucky. “I moved here a week before the first lockdown and jumped right in. We’re loving it.” Entrants in the Great Aussie Pie Competition send four samples of each pie to be judged. Judges look out for things such as pastry, lamination, sensory appeal and stability.

Outdoor dining plans take shape More al fresco dining spaces could open up on The Terrace by Christmas, with a council plan to create temporary outdoor dining areas in the final stages of feedback. In line with the Victorian government’s directive that outdoor activities should be prioritised as COVID-19 restrictions ease, the City of Greater Geelong has distributed a proposed design to all businesses along The Terrace, who have been invited to provide their feedback via an online survey. The proposal aims to enable hospitality businesses on The Terrace to accelerate their recovery from COVID-19 by expanding their outdoor dining options, in turn offering more opportunities for residents and tourists to dine out. Recognising that the precinct is home to a variety of business types who have also been impacted by COVID-19, the design also seeks to meet the needs of non-hospitality businesses by maintaining current levels of car parking, traffic and loading access, and public open space, council said. Council is proposing to convert sections of on-street car parking along The Terrace into temporary outdoor dining areas, creating capacity for 70 extra diners. The parking spaces would be relocated between the new outdoor trading areas and the road, meaning current parking space numbers would be maintained. Existing one-way vehicle access and all loading access would also be maintained. Council plans to provide planter boxes to clearly define the temporary extended trading areas. Hospitality venues will be invited to take up a space within one of the new areas and will be responsible for its management, including providing furniture. “We are working to do everything we can to

assist businesses in our region to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and be well-placed to drive much-needed revenue over the summer months,” City of Greater Geelong economy, investment and attraction acting director Tim Ellis said. “At the same time, we’re mindful of other
businesses along the street. Non-hospitality businesses have distinct needs that must be considered, and we are committed to taking account of their feedback during this process.” A decision on whether the proposal goes ahead will be made once all feedback from traders has been received and considered. The
survey will be open to business owners until the end of today (November 20). Should the proposal go ahead, the city would aim to have the new areas installed in time for Christmas, for a temporary period, with the exact timeframe still to be decided and informed by trader feedback.

Ferry good reason to set sail One million dollars of free ferry tickets between Queencliff and Sorrento – 38,484 tickets in total – are up for grabs in a bid to boost local tourism. Searoad Ferries chief executive Matt McDonald announced the giveaway on Monday as a thank you to Victorians for putting in the hard yards during lockdown. “We hope this giveaway will excite Victorians to reacquaint themselves with our beautiful state and lend a show of support to the local communities that make it up,” Mr McDonald said.

“We are a family-owned business and we know how hard it has been for Victorians during lockdown. “In particular, we’ve seen the hardship faced by many local businesses who rely on tourism so wanted to do our bit and encourage as many visitors as possible to help the community spring back from an incredibly difficult time.” Registration for the free tickets opened on Wednesday and runs until 5pm this Sunday. Victorians can choose any day between November 23 and July 31, 2021, to travel between Queenscliff and Sorrento by using their free return ticket. Searoad Ferries has operated the car and passenger ferry service sailing Port Phillip Bay between Sorrento and Queenscliff for more than 30 years. Details: www.freeferrytickets.com.au.

A long ‘to-do’ list for councillors Cr Stephanie Asher The most important message I’d like to share is a huge thank you to the Ocean Grove community for the vote of confidence in returning us as your local ward councillors. While I fully appreciate that not everyone voted for each of us, the final result certainly indicated you are feeling reasonably happy with the work we are doing on your behalf. As we are all welcoming the warmer weather, I’m sure we have all noticed the busier period in our gorgeous townships is manifesting with tourists, holiday makers and regular visitors. The impact of the pandemic is still a strong visual with the masks on our faces, the distancing stickers and the reduced seating in our many hospitality businesses. Hopefully we will see these changes slowly fading if we all do our bit for a COVID-safe environment. The newly elected council has a long ‘to do’ list for this four-year term, including getting the economy and community morale up and running. I’m rapt to be working alongside my new deputy mayor, Cr Trent Sullivan, a Portarlington local who brings a lot of energy to the role. It’s so exciting to have our leadership team both from the Bellarine. Another first for the City of Greater Geelong. Christmas is around the corner and the famous floating tree is back. This year you don’t have to drive into Geelong and fight the crowds – it’s live-streamed 24/7 on the City of Greater Geelong website.
Briefs Carols postponed Ocean Grove’s much-loved Carols in the Park has been postponed until next year. The event, which usually attracts family crowds exceeding 3000, will next be held on Sunday, December 12, 2021. COVID-19 restrictions have meant all Melbourne and regional carols are paused until next year. President Dianne Sapwell thanked all supporters, sponsors, musicians and volunteers.
Bin butt grant Ocean Grove Coastcare has been successful in obtaining a Coastcare Victoria Community Grant of $5000 for the installation of a series of cigarette butt bins. Cigarette butts make up a sizeable chunk of the litter found on beaches and foreshore. The project will seek to reduce this litter load by providing more disposal points that are easy to find and access. Ocean Grove Coastcare has partnered with Barwon Coast and the City of Greater Geelong to determine the best design and location for the bins.

Wallington Cricket Club has worked hard to boost participation in its Friday evening Woolworths Cricket Blast for juniors. The club has 49 registered participants this season. The concept allows children under 10 to learn about the game in a fun environment. Leopold Community Bank has come on board to sponsor the program. “In these tough times it’s a vital contribution for the club,” president Marc Occhipinti said. “The funds will be used to continue growing our junior program. The club has been focused on repositioning itself towards an open, inclusive, friendly family club and revitalising the junior program is core to that.” Wallington had less than 10 participants for

My focus is firmly on ensuring our region does not experience a decline in services. This is a challenging space as the Federal Government has enabled Australia Post to make cuts to services in our region. I will continue to fight for the restoration of timely mail delivery. I know many within our community still rely on this essential service. It’s shameful this Government has allowed this kind of behaviour from our national postal service to occur. I also launched a petition to bring a Post Office to the booming suburb of Armstrong Creek. It is a town of 15,000 people and it has no post office.

ENVIRONMENT OCEAN GROVE VOICE.COM.AU
Birds aplenty at Anglesea Heath The weather has been a lovely mixture of sunny days and rain and it’s been lovely to see the farm dams looking so full this time of the year, and the pastures looking so green, such a contrast to this time last year. I ventured to Anglesea Heath one sunny morning, and stopped off at Point Addis to check out the rufous bristlebirds, that I saw but failed in photographing. I did spot two female mistletoe birds, which was lovely. Male mistletoe birds have a blue-black head, wings and upperparts, a bright red throat and chest, with a white belly. Females are grey above, white below with a pale red undertail. In the heath I saw striated thornbills, white-eared honeyeaters, white-naped honeyeaters, grey-shrike thrush and white-browed scrubwren. It was a beautiful morning in the peaceful heath. I had an enjoyable outing to Avalon with Tom Fletcher. Western Treatment Plant is closed due to COVID-19, but there is still access to the Avalon Coastal Reserve. The highlights were seeing a pied oystercatcher sitting on a scrape or nest on a raised area of ground in the middle of one of the ponds. We also spotted a sacred kingfisher on the Beach Road, as well as about 60 other species of birds, which was a successful day of hanging around the outside of Western Treatment Plant. I received an email from Kevin who sent
Clockwise from top left: Jen’s picture of a sacred kingfisher at Avalon; Jen’s photo of a mistletoe bird at Anglesea; Kevin’s picture of a ruddy turnstone between Indented Head and Portarlington; Carole’s picture of a Major Mitchell cockatoo at Swan Hill. (Pictures: Supplied)
a wonderful image of a ruddy turnstone. He had looked for ruddy turnstones and red-capped plovers at St Leonards to no avail. Kevin was pleased to come across about 10 ruddy turnstones between Indented Head and Portarlington. Ruddy turnstones are migratory shorebirds. After breeding in the northern hemisphere, they migrate south via south-east Asia. Ruddy turnstones are mainly found on exposed rocks or reefs, and on beaches. All
ruddy turnstones have orange legs that are a brighter orange during the breeding season. In flight, they show a unique plumage colour pattern, with a white stripe down the back, a black tail stripe, white rump, and white stripe down the wings. Ruddy turnstones are so named because when feeding, they have been seen to turn over stones and seaweed to find insects, crustaceans, molluscs, and spiders. I also received an email from Carole, who
was very lucky to have a close encounter with a Major Mitchell cockatoo in Swan Hill. Carole explained that it was very warm at her friend’s house in Swan Hill so they sat outside in a shaded area and enjoyed a cool breeze. Her friend had a sprinkler on to water a tiny patch of grass. A single Major Mitchell flew down and had a long shower. Carole observed that the bird’s face displayed pure bliss and she took about 20 photos of the encounter.

Asher re-elected mayor Councillor Stephanie Asher will continue as the City of Greater Geelong’s mayor after she was re-elected unopposed to the role by her councillor colleagues. Cr Asher has been elected for a further term of two years, having already served as mayor between October 2019 and this year’s council elections. An Ocean Grove resident, Cr Asher was first voted onto the council in 2017. She was re-elected as a representative of the Bellarine ward during last month’s council elections. Cr Asher said she was humbled, grateful and excited to continue as mayor. “I feel incredibly privileged and honoured to be given the chance to lead this beautiful
region once again,” she said. “My priorities will be: Fast-tracking key projects and processes to get the economy and community morale up and running; getting the sustainability plan into rapid action with input from the community and interest groups; reviewing the budget to focus on critical projects; and setting up a shadow deputy roster once again, to build capacity in the council team.” Fellow Bellarine ward councillor Trent Sullivan was elected unopposed as the deputy mayor. Cr Sullivan, from Portarlington, is also serving his second term on the council. Cr Sullivan said he was looking forward to supporting Cr Asher in his new leadership role.
“I’m humbled and honoured to be elected by my fellow councillors for the next two years,” he said. “Now our four-year term begins and we launch straight back into the fray of fighting for our community. “We need to put the hard yards into rebuilding our local economy and our community by supporting our businesses and community groups, and building the necessary infrastructure to make sure our region will not only survive, but thrive.” Cr Asher congratulated Cr Sullivan on his appointment as deputy mayor. “I really look forward to working together and bringing energy and a commitment to getting things done as a team,” she said.
Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on proposed opportunities and solutions to transport and parking issues in Barwon Heads. Engagement has opened on Geelong council’s proposed solutions, which were informed by community feedback received in May as part of the Barwon Heads Transport and Parking Study, as well as traffic counts and parking occupancy data. The proposed changes aim to enhance safety, improve pedestrian and cycling accessibility, promote sustainable transport and review parking conditions. The proposed changes include intersection upgrades, active transport links, pedestrian safety upgrades, new footpaths, parking improvements and speed limit reductions. “The city is dedicated to improving how residents and visitors to Barwon Heads move around the area. Safety and accessibility for all are our top priorities,” council’s city services director Guy Wilson-Browne said. The Barwon Heads Transport and Parking Study focuses on roads and assets managed by the city, including parking, intersections, pedestrian crossings and speed limits. Consultation is open until Monday, December 14 and the feedback will be used to inform the final proposals to council for the Barwon Heads Traffic and Parking Study. Tell us about you… I’m 21 and from Ocean Grove. This year I completed my bachelor of nursing at Deakin University and I will commence a graduate program in 2021. I have been a volunteer at Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club (OGSLSC) for many years and love spending time down at the beach. I was born in Geelong, attended high school in Drysdale and have spent my whole life growing up here.

Friodrtnaigyhtly F
How have you been involved with OGSLSC? I was very sporty as a kid and spent a lot of my spare time trying out new sports. I joined OGSLSC when I was 10 as part of the nipper program and have stayed ever since. What I enjoy most would be the people I have got to meet throughout my time at the club and the opportunity to support the local community. I have been an active patrol member since 2011. Throughout this time, I have been given the opportunity to gain many new qualifications and work my way up the ranks to the role of patrol captain.
In summer 2019-20 I was able to lead my team to achieve a perfect score on our state inspection conducted by Lifesaving Victoria. Recently, I was fortunate enough to be awarded the Fred Leiper Best Patrol Person at OGSLSC’s annual award presentations. I’m currently completing my rescue water craft training, which has been a goal of mine for a while now. Some of my fondest memories growing up were during school holidays getting dropped off at the club and just knowing that your mates would be there, and spending all day out in the surf or catching up. What was your most challenging patrol? Fortunately, Ocean Grove is one of the safer surf beaches within the region. Last season I experienced my most difficult patrol. It was a hot day, the beach was packed, the surf was up and a rip formed directly in front of the club. It was a high-pressure situation to lead. The whole patrol banded together and we managed to rescue seven people and divert the public to a safer swimming area.
What are your favourite things to do locally? I spend a lot of time down at many of the region’s beaches, mostly going for walks or swimming. I love going out for breakfast and coffee. How are you coping with COVID-19? I have spent the last year completing my nursing studies online, while juggling clinical placements on top of that with the risk of exposure to patients with COVID-19. I’m looking forward to being able to travel again, even if it’s just within Australia. COVID-19 has had many effects on lifesaving; for example our competition teams have not been able to attend events or train within a group. Meanwhile, ongoing training has been limited, including how skills maintenance is undertaken in preparation for the upcoming patrol season. I think it could be interesting to see a potential influx of tourists visiting beaches especially due to restrictions in Melbourne easing, and also adapting patrol operations to be COVID-Safe, such as additional personal protective equipment and social distancing.

Help staying connected Bellarine Community Health (BCH) has received a Community Connections Grant through the Give Where You Live Foundation, which will address social isolation for older, vulnerable people on the Bellarine. The $10,000 grant will be used by the BCH social support team to create a program to improve the digital literacy of about 85 BCH clients, many of whom have been isolated from family and friends during COVID-19. The program will enable clients to use new technologies to stay connected and reduce loneliness. Clients will be supported to use iPads or their own devices and learn how to use communication platforms such as Zoom or Skype.

We felt so distant from our clients for so long

- Leanne Smith BCH social support clients have been severely impacted by COVID-19 with all group activities suspended, leaving many clients without crucial weekly connections. At the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdowns, the social support team moved quickly to find innovative ways to stay connected with clients, including weekly phone calls, newsletters containing games and recipes and care packages. With restrictions easing, the team is now making home visits, sharing a cuppa and a chat. “It’s kept me involved in the support group, the girls bring me news of what’s going on and how everyone else is fairing and sometimes we ring each other,” 88-year-old Point Lonsdale resident Gwen Wren said. “They’ve brought me masks and sent me

newsletters. It’s been a lovely way to keep in touch.” BCH social support assistant Leanne Smith said the team is just as happy to be seeing clients face-to-face again. “We felt so distant from our clients for so long, so this face-to-face contact has meant
so much to us as well as the support to our senior members in the community,” she said. The team is also taking some clients on a ‘walk and talk’ or a ‘coffee stop’ at a cafe outside of their homes. A COVIDSafe plan is also being developed to take clients on scenic drives around the Bellarine.
Volunteers turned out for the first Ocean Grove Coastcare weed pull since early March. About 20 volunteers across two sites, 7W and 20W, removed almost 30 bags of weeds, including the highly invasive Cypress spurge (euphorbia cyparissias). Environmental weeds are a major threat to the biodiversity values of Ocean Grove’s dune ecosystems, and efforts like these make a huge contribution to their protection and conservation. Barwon Coast’s Maddie Glynn played a major role in the organisation and running of the day. Ocean Grove Coastcare is planning for more events and activities in the near future. The monthly weekday weeding group will also return soon. Pre-COVID, this group was meeting every third Thursday morning of the month. Details are still being sorted out, but if you are interested in joining the group, contact Jane at oceangrovecoastcare@gmail.com.

FEATURING ... MY BUSINESS
Best dressed at Beach & Bay Every now and then it can almost feel like destiny that two people meet, at the right time and in the right place. That seems true for Jan McMillan and Jeanette Schwarze, the pair first meeting each other while working together at a now defunct Geelong-based business. Jan explains how their subsequent friendship went on to change the course of their lives – and in the process now caters to clothes-loving, fashion-conscious women living in seven widespread coastal locations. “Jeanette and I discovered we shared a past, both of us having worked years ago at Myer – one as an Apparel Buyer and the other as a Store Operations Leader,” Jan says. “We also found that our skills and experience were complementary, and we shared similar goals and business ethics. “When the 30-year-old business (Beach Club) closed its 13 outlets – including our workplace – due to the owner’s retirement, we immediately saw an opportunity to start our own business and rebrand six of the shops, launching a brand-new one in Barwon Heads as well. “We’re now collectively Beach & Bay, delivering a fab range of quality clothing that women love for its classic quality and comfort, especially suited for casual coastal life.” The dynamic duo loved the challenge of starting the new business, especially when they were able to save 18 terrific team members from redundancy and enabling them to continue close relationships formed with loyal customers. Jan and Jeanette, passionate about all things clothes and accessories, were also committed to providing great brands. “We carry the Yarra Trail, Foil, Jump and Betty Basics labels, for example, as well as

clothing from our own Beach & Bay label. Think lovely linens, stylish tops and pants, dresses oozing style and comfort, the perfect sweater… “We continue to add exciting on-trend
clothes and accessories, and the pieces we select complement each other. This makes it easy for our customers to put pieces together, leaving our stores with a cohesive look and that wonderful ‘whole new outfit’ feeling.”
All of the stores adhere to strict COVID-safe protocols, the super-friendly service and advice is exceptional, and the shopping experience is exciting – never a chore. Ahhh … the beach and bay life.

A family business through and through Erin plays a significant role in the business. Not only is she a sales and marketing specialist, Erin’s also a qualified interior designer. “This means Erin can assist our customers by visiting their homes to help guide furniture and décor choices. “She’s also a gun at assembling furniture, and helps out with deliveries – the same as Ian, who also does logistics and sales. “John is our website guru, as well as lends a hand with day-to-day tasks. And I’m in sales and admin – it’s a genuine hands-on family business.” As with any business worth its salt, the family crew loves best seeing their customers come back to tell them how wonderful was their last purchase – and then seeing them come back for more. If you’re yet to meet the family and seen what they offer, now’s a good time to find out why you don’t need to ever go to the big smoke to find furniture. They were once lounge furniture manufacturers in Melbourne so when on holidays, the lack of any furniture shop anywhere on the peninsula stood out to Ian and Maryanne Brewer. At the same time, they were looking to make a sea change. It didn’t take long for them to choose beautiful Ocean Grove to set up Bellarine Furniture & Bedding. Since 2005, the couple – and now with daughter Erin and son-in-law John – have been offering lounges, recliner chairs, dining suites, TV units, buffets, bar stools, mattresses, beds, bed settees, bunks and much more. And, right now, the family is staging a Super Floor Stock Sale, with many items marked down by more than 30 per cent, and floor stock mattresses at an amazing 50 per cent off. Fitting right in with small-town friendliness, the business is renowned for its service to its customers. “For example,” says Maryanne, “if you buy a mattress, we’ll deliver it for free, set it up in your room, and take away the old mattress if needed. “If you order bunks, we don’t leave you to wrestle with assembly. We pre-assemble, then complete it on delivery. And this service is free for all our flat-packed furniture items.” Maryanne notes that purchases can be made from the floor displays, or can be ordered in if preferred.

Always a piping hot spot, Piping Hot Chicken and Burger Grill on the Terrace is hotter than ever now people are happily getting out and about again. Prior to the pandemic disruptions, owner Tami McAdam and her clever crew were bopping to the groovy tunes played in the cafe´ by day and, at night, they did it again as the place morphed into a funky live music venue. While that’s gone for now, the cafe´ has more than risen to the challenges of the pandemic, with lively takeaway and home delivery services in play. Piping Hot’s award-winning coffee and tasty eats have customers coming back through the doors, welcomed with open arms and friendly smiles. The coffee, which bears the Roastcraft label, delivers a brew from locally roasted beans that pairs well with, say, a BLT brioche, a chorizo brekky burger or toasted fruit loaf. The range of burgers, wraps and rolls is so extensive it needs its own section on the menu. All the faves are on board, and for a hit of spice check out the Mexican Mama Sita burger. And if chilli’s your thing, here’s a challenge: will you go for ‘Medium’, ‘Stupid Hot’ or ‘Impossible’ when you order the mouth-watering buffalo wings? A traditional chicken parmi burger and a Mexican parmi have been popular additions to the menu, while slices for sweet-lovers are year-round stayers. Chutneys, pickles, spice rubs and marinades are made in-house, and the fully licensed cafe´ stocks local beers and ciders. Tami has just launched a new food ordering app, easily accessed by scanning a QR code, that has a built-in loyalty points system offering customers savings. The app will keep people up-to-date with the latest Piping Hot news and progress on how their order is tracking.

Local grommets dominate home surf Jan Juc and Torquay juniors dominated their home surf on Sunday, winning five out of six age divisions in the long-awaited Rip Curl Gromsearch. In his final year of competition at the event, Ethan Huxtable went head-to-head with younger rising star and fellow Jan Juc local Willis Droomer in a thrilling 16 and under final. Despite surfing an age division up, Droomer, 14, challenged his older competitor in a battle viewers described as “an amazing display of aerial manoeuvres” and “innovative surfing”. In the end Huxtable narrowly came out on top with a 15.50 heat total to Droomer’s 15 in small but clean waves. Huxtable was thrilled to get the win at the Gromsearch, the first Surfing Victoria event in eight months since COVID-19 restrictions halted competition in March. “I’m super happy to win after a long break away from competition,” he said. “It was fun and super competitive going against Willis. He is super innovative with his airs, so it was great to get the win over him.” The top three from each division will progress to the national final at URBNSURF

wave pool in Melbourne next year. “I’m stoked to be going to the national final at URBNSURF,” Huxtable said. “We have been spending some time up there since the lockdown ended and it’s such a perfect wave.” Asher Lens (Torquay) finished third on 10.67 points while Charlie Farrer (Barwon Heads) finished fourth on 9.10. After the disappointment of a narrow loss in the 16 and under competition, Droomer went on to win the 14 and under final later in the day by more than four points.
In the 16 and under girls, Torquay’s Emily McGettigan claimed “the biggest win” of her career by taking down former Australian champion Ellie Harrison from Barwon Heads. McGettigan finished on 13.34 points, ahead of Harrison on 12.67. “This is the biggest win I’ve ever had. It’s really built my confidence,” McGettigan said. “The conditions were pretty slow out there but there was plenty of opportunity. I’m stoked to take the win.” Finishing in third and fourth respectively
were Mia Huppatz (Jan Juc) and Poppy Corbett (Phillip Island). In the 14 and under girls Jan Juc’s Isla Huppatz took home the win in an incredible final. She locked in the only perfect 10-point ride of the weekend on her way to a massive 17.83 heat total. Jan Juc’s Remy Filer won the 12 and under boys while Shoreham’s Sophie Wilkinson (Shoreham) won the girls competition. Luke Voogt

The following players won their respective club championship event in October after it was postponed from the previous season. Mixed Pairs: Faye Richardson and Owen Clark Men’s Pairs: Grant McLaren and Matt Flapper Men’s Minor Singles: Alan Wastell Ladies Minor Singles: Denise Wastell Ladies 100 up: Adele Ryan Men’s 100 up: Brendan Carroll 34 OCEAN GROVE VOICE Friday, 20 November, 2020
The events finished off all championships for the 2019-20 season. A total of 78 men battled it out for the Ryman Healthcare Men’s Club Triples Championship, in what members describe as the best club event to be part of. Members are chosen in teams on a graded system, allowing players to compete with other players from lower/higher divisions. David Mackay, Wade Bowyer and Mick West were crowned 2020-21 champions. Club Mixed Pairs had 32 teams battle it out in sectional play, with the eight section winners ready to return for the quarter finals this Sunday. Ladies Club Pairs sectional play resulted in five section winners with the next round of play on December 1. Ocean Grove bowlers have already enjoyed success in GBR events with Muriel Williams (sub Marg Carroll), Patricia Virtue and Faye Richardson taking out consecutive Ladies Triples titles. It was an all Ocean Grove

Dramatic scenes unfolded on Saturday morning in Leopold as an under-13s game ended in a thrilling tie. “It was very exciting,” said Leopold Horne under-13s coach Sean Boland. “Ties are very, very rare.” Leopold made 6/98 off 30 overs batting first against Collendina Ellwood. With Collendina only three wickets down and needing just a handful of runs in the final over, Leopold brought on leg spinner Tom Kneeshaw. “He was landing them in the right spots and he did really well,” Boland said. “We put him on in the last over just to take the pace off.” The choice worked, with batsmen Augie Graham and Nate Bush managing just a few runs in the first five balls. With two needed off the last delivery, Augie blocked and ran as Nate took off from the other end. Tom slapped the ball towards the non-striker’s end, missing the stumps by just centimetres as Augie completed the single for a tie. Collendina parent Craig Cook said the boys “were pretty excited just to get the tie” as they were chasing a “mid-range score” for that age group. Ocean Grove thrashed Jan Juc, scoring 3/192 with Byron Hansford retiring for a well made 38. Ocean Grove beat North Geelong in the BWCC Women’s Division 1. Two wickets from Danielle Vigilante and runs to Jackie Montgomery (25 retired) sealed the win. In the Geelong Renegades Girls League, Grove defeated arch rivals Barwon Heads with Alex Smith (31 not out) and Andy Wirth (21 not out) the standout players. Luke Voogt

The Cobras defeated a Queenscliff side that had been in good form. Collendina batted first with Richie Peters and Curtly Balshaw putting on 79 for the first wicket. Balshaw (41) was run out for the second week in a row while Peters (46) returned his highest score of the season. Andy Higgins (33) and Jacob Gasior (15 not out) rounded off the innings at 6/171. Higgins and Charlie Lamb struck early to have the Coutas at 2/14 in reply and at 5/70, the game looked to be all over. However, Daniel Stott (29) and Tom Bakker (48) had other ideas and got Queenscliff back into the contest. Michael Farrell made 17, but Queenscliff ran out of overs and wickets in hand. Higgins rounded off a player of the match performance with 3/7 from seven overs while Gasior, Jye Hearps and Rob Stonehouse each picked up two wickets to have the Coutas all out for 159. At 8/64 Collendina was down and almost out, but Nick Gibbon and Dave Treharne (both 38 not out) refused to concede defeat and put on an unbeaten ninth wicket partnership of 80 to get the Cobras home in a thriller on the final ball of their allotted 40 overs. Collendina enjoyed a good win in C Grade against Anglesea.
Des Every (58), Craig Jeffrey (46), Garry Wingrave (37) and Peter Mohr (29) all contributed to the final total of 7/205. Anglesea made 8/163 with seamer Jye Hearps taking 3/32 with Andy Higgins (2/33) and Charlie Lamb (1/23 from eight overs) contributing. The Cobras started their run chase poorly with Curtly Balshaw looking good before he was run out with a direct hit from Jack Elliott at cover. Nathan Walter looked comfortable, scoring a brisk 24, but too many Collendina batsmen made starts without going on with the job. The Cobras were all out for 109.

The Grubbers started their run chase in disastrous fashion. At 3/11 and with Michael Philp on a hat-trick, Grove never really recovered although Dylan Thorley (19) dug in and skipper Paul Jubber (49) played well.
