Mum’s fight for life By Luke Voogt A campaign for a “devoted” mother-of-two and “beautiful, caring soul” facing the “battle of her life” against stage 4 bowel cancer has raised more than $6600. Geelong West’s Masayo Hobday said she was overwhelmed by the “unbelievable” response after being rushed to hospital for life-saving surgery on September 30. “Everyone is just so generous,” the 49-year-old said on Wednesday, a day after beginning a four-month course of chemotherapy. Masayo first noticed blood in her stool in March, but put off getting a colonoscopy due to COVID-19 restrictions and home-schooling her children Hannah, 13, and Jack, 10, who has autism.

but she hopes surgeons can repair her bowels after chemotherapy so she no longer has to. Hamish quit his job in WA and joined his wife and family on October 1 after authorities finally approved his application to return.

Throughout the ordeal, Masayo has worried most about its impact on her family. “Every single day my daughter asks how I’m feeling,” she said. Friend of several years Brooke Scharkosi created a GoFundMe page for Masayo,

describing her as a “beautiful, caring soul”. “Any amount you could donate would make a world of difference, and help ease the burden of a family struck by the cruellest of hardships,” Brooke said. Details: www.gofundme.com/f/friends-of-

Initially, she had mild symptoms but her condition had worsened dramatically by August. “I was getting really sick and staying in my bed – I was in a lot of pain,” she said. “They found a big tumour in my sigmoid colon and they showed a photo of how bad it was – I was in shock.” Masayo had already suffered prolonged separation from her husband Hamish, who was working in the mines in Western Australia when COVID-19 hit. Hamish was in tears after he heard the news over the phone, and applied to return but authorities denied his application, Masayo said. On September 30 she underwent surgery to remove the tumour, which extended to six hours when surgeons discovered the cancer had spread. Along with removing part of her bowels, they also had to remove her uterus and ovaries to save her life, Masayo explained. Specialists now hope that chemotherapy can eradicate the remaining cancer in her liver. Masayo currently has to use a colostomy bag

Budget snub angers G21, council By Luke Voogt A lack of funding for the proposed Northern Aquatic and Community Hub in the 2020-21 state budget has angered municipal alliance G21 and council. G21 chief executive Elaine Carbines described the lack of funds for the $61.6 million health and recreation complex as “a glaring omission”. “Despite intensive advocacy by [council], G21 and other bodies the proposed Norlane complex has been overlooked in both the state and federal budgets,” she said.

“[Council] has allocated $21 million for the project, but they can’t do this alone. “For how long are the wellbeing needs of the disadvantaged northern suburbs of Geelong to remain a low priority in Spring Street and Canberra?” Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher also noted the “absence of funding” and said council would “continue to strongly advocate” to state government “to find other funding sources”. Lara MP John Eren this week publicly blamed a lack of detailed planning by City Hall for state government choosing not to fund the project.

Mr Eren said the project lacked a detailed business case and designs. But both G21 and City Hall welcomed $180 million for new social housing in Geelong, complementing council plans to build 12,000 new social housing dwellings by 2041. Ms Carbines also commended a $184 million infrastructure and tourism boost for the Great Ocean Road and $41 million to complete the final stage of the Kardinia Park redevelopment. Five million dollars for respite service Anam Cara House, $6 million towards a proposed women and children’s hospital and $15.31

million to upgrade Northern Bay College’s Goldsworthy campus drew praise as well. “We also welcome funds for a new gym at Geelong South Primary, a new building at Barwon Valley School and a new classroom for Clifton Springs Primary,” Ms Carbines said. But she criticised a lack of funding for a rail link to Avalon Airport and upgrades to roads serving Geelong’s new Spirit of Tasmania boat terminal. “It would be a huge mistake to leave Avalon without rail, creating the same retro-fit challenges Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport is now facing,” she said.

Northern Bay students show the way A program that secured $16,000 for Northern Bay College students to deliver 80 community change projects in two years has won a statewide philanthropy award. This week Philanthropy Australia presented its inaugural community award to Melbourne-based group Kids Thrive for child-led social change program Kids as Catalysts. Northern Bay year 7 student Hannah O’Brien said she was proud to be part of the award-winning program last year. ”I thought it was impressive,” the Corio 13-year-old said. Hannah’s group organised a morning tea

providing a safe space for students to discuss gender identity while another group organised a barbecue for a disabled football club. Over the past two years more than 600 Northern Bay College students had forged partnerships with 50 local community groups through the program, Kids Thrive creative director Andrea Lemon said. In that time the students secured $16,000 in funding to co-design and deliver more than 80 community change projects benefiting thousands of people in Geelong, Dr Lemon said. Kids as Catalysts is a social change program designed to equip children aged eight to 12 with

real world experience in leading community change. Kids Thrive has delivered the program in 35 schools since 2011. “Every single child has a fundamental right to have a voice and to influence their own life and the world they live in,” said Liana Buchanan, Victorian principal commissioner for children and young people. “Kids Thrive brings this right to life for children, and anyone who bears witness to the results can have no doubt – we need child-led change.”

A $2 billion “fast rail” investment will make little difference to trains between Geelong and Melbourne, according to a local public transport advocate. “It’s a bit of spin to say it’s fast rail they’re going to deliver,” Public Transport Users Association Geelong convener Paul Westcott said. Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan this week announced a new express track through Werribee, eight-kilometres shorter than the current route through Wyndham Vale. Rail Projects Victoria touts new times of about 50 minutes in stage one of the Geelong Fast Rail project, reducing travel times by “up to 15 minutes”. But the 5.32pm weekday Melbourne-Geelong train already makes the trip in 50 minutes, according to VLine’s timetable. Even savings of 15 minutes for Geelong’s slowest trains amounted only to “slightly faster rail”, Mr Westcott said. He said planners were trying to match “pie in the sky” expectations built up by “federal government spruiking fast rail”. The federal government’s 2019 election commitment of $2 billion towards 32-minute “fast rail” included no detailed planning, he said. “Fast rail is a bit of a fetish … Regular passengers don’t complain about the time – they complain about the lack of seats.” Mr Westcott urged state government to use its additional $2 billion investment to increase the frequency of Geelong-Melbourne trains. Under the plan, trains will use both the Wyndham Vale and Werribee routes, which he said was an opportunity to increase services. Luke Voogt

COVID-safe warning for schoolies By Luke Voogt Extra police will descend on the Surf Coast to help local officers monitor house parties and gatherings as schoolies kicks off this weekend. Surf Coast Inspector Monique Leffanue warned police would crack down on parties and public gatherings breaching COVID-19 restrictions, along with the usual targeting of anti-social behaviour. “Our concerns are, because of the lack of events, that there will be more parties in households and accommodation venues,”

Inspector Leffanue said. “We’ll have an increased police presence across the Surf Coast and any issues that come to our attention will be addressed appropriately.” Inspector Leffanue encouraged schoolies to physically-distance where possible and wear masks if not. “We ask that they don’t drink to excess or take illicit drugs, they look after each other and they do it in a COVID-safe way,” she said. “We’ve been given these restrictions for a good reason and we just need to abide by them for safety.

“We understand it’s been a really difficult year for everyone, particularly for year 12s that have missed out on so much. I think the majority of schoolies do the right thing.” The lack of events this year would create increased challenges for local officers and their Melbourne reinforcements policing schoolies, Inspector Leffanue said. “Most years schoolies have events that they can go to and they are always really well policed and well organised.” Despite Queensland being off-limits to schoolies until its border with Victoria reopens next Tuesday, Inspector Leffanue said bookings

for the Surf Coast on Schoolies.com were lower than usual. “We were really surprised when we saw the numbers were down. I think the COVID environment and the lack of events that councils are able to hold plays a part in that. The Surf Coast is really quite busy otherwise.” Normally about 3000 schoolies flock to Lorne each year, along with another 1500 at Torquay. Some school-leavers could delay their celebrations, with the Schoolies.com website floating possible new dates for the event dependent on government restrictions.

Fuzzy Logic behind disco Geelong DJ Ryan Schmidtke – AKA DJ Fuzzy Logic – wants locals ready to dance when he makes his long-anticipated return to the decks. The central Geelong resident will bring the beats for a free online disco and masquerade for International Day of People with Disability next Thursday. “I want people to be prepared to dance,” he said. Ryan, who has cerebral palsy and entertains crowds using a specialised DJ kit, was unfazed by the unusual challenge of performing online. “I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “There’s nothing wrong with something a bit different.” The gig is Ryan’s first since playing at the Ocean Grove Hotel at the beginning of 2020 – a strangely quiet year for him. Pre-COVID-19 the 31-year-old was a regular at big gigs such as charity event Sleep At The ’G after more than a decade behind the turntable. He plans to bring a mix of dance and party

tunes, both new and old, for the gig next Thursday at noon. His support worker Connor Thompson will join the online crowd donning a fancy mask for the event. “Even I’m looking forward to this and I’m one of the overworked roadies,” Connor said. Connor’s sister and Rights Information and Advocacy Centre team leader Rachael Thompson was also excited for the event. “Last year we had about 80 people turn up and it was a really successful night,” she said. “That was derailed this year, obviously, and we wanted to do something, so virtual is the way to go. “This time we can reach the national audience so hopefully everyone tunes in at lunchtime.” Details: events.humanitix.com/let-s-partyfree-virtual-disco-idpwd Luke Voogt

More than 1600 saplings now line the grounds of a North Shore reserve following a recent project, with council planning to plant 1400 more trees. The joint council and GeelongPort revegetation project at Moorpanyal Park is the latest development in a 16-year transformation of the former industrial area. During that time the North Shore Residents Group and other green thumbs have planted more than 70,000 indigenous grasses, trees and shrubs along the cliff top. “The green revival of Moorpanyal Park is one of Geelong’s environmental success stories,” Windermere ward councillor Kylie Grzybek said. “The ongoing restoration of one of Corio Bay’s hidden gems highlights the benefits that

can be delivered when the council, industry and community work together.” In the 1600-tree stage one of the project, GeelongPort provided funding to purchase the plants, stakes and guards, while council workers planted the trees. The organisations shelved initial plans for a community planting effort due to COVID-19 gathering limits. Council plans to involve local residents and GeelongPort employees in the second stage of the project to add a further 1400 trees. “This project takes us a little bit closer to our goal of greening Geelong and planting one million trees by 2030,” Windermere ward councillor Anthony Aitken said.

COVID-19 restrictions closing pokies from March 23 to November 9 prevented $7.7 million of gambling losses in Geelong, according to Alliance for Gambling Reform. The alliance’s chief advocate Tim Costello welcomed the COVID-19 silver lining, along with Geelong Cats selling their last remaining pokies venue this week.

Gold Coast flights set for takeoff By Luke Voogt Flights from Avalon Airport to the Gold Coast are set to take off on January 1 after the Queensland government reopened its border to Victoria. Jetstar revealed plans to the Independent on Tuesday to resume the service on New Year’s Day, pending confirmation of the border reopening. On Wednesday morning Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed her state would reopen to Victorians on December 1.

“I congratulate Daniel Andrews, their chief health officer and all of Victorians because this is just such fantastic news,” Ms Palaszczuk told a press conference. “It means on December 1, Victorians can also come to Queensland and, of course, Queenslanders can go to Victoria as well. So very, very good news.” Prior to the confirmation, a Jetstar spokesperson said the airline would begin operating four services a week from Avalon Airport to the Gold Coast on January 1, and increase flights based on demand. “We really look forward to resuming flights

between Avalon and the Gold Coast. This will mark the first time we have flown this route since March. We are excited to help more families and friends reconnect and help to boost local tourism in Geelong and the region during the school holidays.” Jetstar has begun selling flights between Avalon Airport and the Gold Coast from $83 on its website. A fortnight ago, Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings told the Independent the airport would be ready to operate flights to the Gold Coast by December 18 or earlier.

But he warned airlines needed more time to prepare and urged the Queensland government to fast-track its announcement on the border reopening. This Tuesday Mr Giddings welcomed the planned resumption of the service despite initially hoping for an earlier start date. “Our flights to the Gold Coast normally peak just after Christmas – so the timing is ideal,” he said. Earlier this month Jetstar announced services between Avalon Airport and Sydney would resume on December 18.

Shoe-in protests gas More than 100 pairs of shoes could cover the steps of City Hall tomorrow in protest of the federal government’s “gas-led” recovery, organisers predict. Geelong Sustainability Group climate action co-ordinator Sally Fisher encouraged locals to join the “COVID-safe” shoe strike to show support for a renewables-led recovery instead. “The Earth has warmed by one degree Celsius because of human activities, and we have seen disastrous impacts here in Australia already,” Ms Fisher said. “We must phase out fossil fuels quickly to avoid a catastrophic future. Reducing demand for gas is important if we wish to save money and protect our environment.” With COVID-19 restrictions limiting outdoor gatherings to 50 people, Ms Fisher encouraged locals to leave a pair of shoes on the steps of City Hall throughout the afternoon from noon in a national day of action.

Geelong Sustainability opposes federal government’s recently announced gas-led recovery, which lists dozens of potential gas projects and proposes subsidies for the industry. The government intends the plan to help Australia’s economy recover from COVID-19 and ease its transition to renewable energy. Ms Fisher quoted a recent Deloitte Access Economics study stating Australia could experience up to 880,000 job losses by 2050 if climate change continues unchecked. She also pointed to an Australian Institute statement that gas is one of the most “jobs poor” industries. But Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association Victorian director Ashley Wells said removing natural gas from the future energy mix would make Victorians more reliant on coal. MY GEELONG The Hamlyn Heights community rallied around the Valenti family when an arsonist destroyed their supermarket last year. Tony Valenti speaks to Luke Voogt about decades at the store, plans to reopen and his other great passion, music. Tell us about you… I’m 58 but I still think I’m 35. I live in Highton with my partner Mel and between us we have three great kids Lana, Anthony and Zach, and a gorgeous 15-month-old granddaughter named Blare. I have many hobbies but not enough time to tackle them all. I love to cook, write, learn about history, discover new food and just relax. I started at Vallis IGA, Hamlyn Heights, with my parents when it opened in 1979. My brother Joe started the following year and my other siblings Frank and Silvana started several years later. I left in 1980 to pursue other interests and was in and out of the business, but came back permanently almost 20 years ago.

I didn’t really believe what I was seeing. I remember my parents watching 40 years of hard work burnt into rubble and the faces of our devastated staff, and trying to work out how we were going to keep them employed. The community was as devastated as we were. As the news spread to all our customers, words of sorrow and almost despair came filtering through social media. It had become a meeting place for friends and family. It was a major part of their lives, as they were to ours. After the initial shock faded, words of support and encouragement came flowing through and buoyed us all. Good news is we are finally on track to open the new store this time next year. Tell us about your music career… One of my hobbies that became a full-time

passion was music. In earlier years I played bass and sang in different tribute shows, from Elvis and Rod Stewart to Cold Chisel. I even toured with Sir Cliff Richards. My longest stint was with my dear friend Patrick McMahon, who is the Superman of entertainment. I worked with Patrick for years and toured Australia many times. I worked in Malaysia for six months… I’ve had the privilege of working

with some great Geelong musicians singing in my own band and doing A Neil Diamond tribute. The best part, except for performing, was the people I met – from prime ministers and sporting legends to entertainers and actors. I’ve also performed on Bert Newton, Hey Hey it’s Saturday, morning TV and more. I’ve been recording an album, when time permits, with a producer who got me started in

music about 44 years ago. What’s something about you that people might not know? I used to do radio … I interviewed entertainers, authors and politicians, and at one stage I had a Geelong Cats footy show. Oh and I was a hairdresser for a while too!

A MESSAGE FROM CR STEPHANIE ASHER, MAYOR It’s a chance to switch on your decorative lights and stand on your front porch or driveway to wish your neighbours a merry Christmas.

It’s amazing to look back on 2020 and all of the challenges each of us has faced and overcome. There have been so many inspiring people and moments: the dedicated medical professionals and teachers; the local business operators who found a way to survive; the driveway ANZAC services; and the collective sacrifices every single person made during lockdown.

Post your photos and messages using the #geelongnightoflights hashtag, and for those who can, we’re also encouraging donations to Bethany’s Geelong Giving Tree Appeal.

CURRENT RESTRICTIONS Victoria moved into the ‘Last Step’ on the roadmap for reopening on Monday 23 November. NEW MASK RULES Masks must be worn when indoors. They must be worn outdoors if you are unable to stay more than 1.5 metres away from others. Masks are not required when you are outdoors and you can maintain social distance. Thanks everyone, and I look forward to seeing how you all celebrate the Night of Lights!

Tonight we hope you’ll join us in reflecting and looking ahead, as we kick off what will be a wonderful festive season. The City of Greater Geelong is partnering with Bay FM and Bethany to present the first ‘Geelong Night of Lights’. There’s a special two-hour radio broadcast from 7.00pm, and we want you to get involved by lighting up the night as one at 9.00pm.

Sweethearts return in live stream By Luke Voogt

and the melody – and a little bit of improv at the end because you’ve got to show off the vocals,” she laughed. “That was fun, we got to do a recording and everyone contributed to the song.” With numbers limited due to COVID-19, the show will focus on giving older band members a final live performance with the Sweethearts. “Normally there would be 30 of us switching around,” Watts explained. She was thrilled to join the girls again for live

rehearsals when onsite learning returned for Victorian schools in term four. Watts described playing for crowds in Switzerland, Italy and France last year as a highlight of her time in the band. “It was so inspiring to see them love the music as much we love playing it,” she said. “A lot of people don’t really expect much from us at the start because we’re a high school band. But when they hear us … I think they’re surprised by how well we can play.”

Voice contestant Imogen Brough, Geelong Cats AFLW player Rebecca Goring and Alice Ivy have all featured in past Sweethearts line-ups. Like them, Watts wants to keep playing after school, while studying nursing at university. “It’s not my main career plan but it’s not something I want to forget,” she said. “I’m hoping to get a couple of girls from the Sweethearts. It doesn’t have to be serious thing – just something light and fun.”

The Sweethearts missed out on their usual festival gigs across Europe amid a global pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped Geelong’s soulful sisters making their mark on 2020. “COVID was a massive struggle for us at the start because we didn’t know what to do,” said year 12 band member Ruby Watts last Friday, after completing her final VCE exam. “A lot of year 12s were a bit upset they didn’t get to experience that final year of the Sweethearts.” But instead, during lockdown, the school-based band created a smooth version of Al Green’s Take Me to the River, with each girl recording their own instrumentals, vocals and videos. Sweethearts musical director Michael Fitzgerald then mixed the tracks and clips into a quirky YouTube video. “We haven’t done a music video like that – not in my time – I feel we achieved the maximum we could in the circumstances,” Watts said. “It was good to be part of that.” Now, after the relief of her final school exam, Watts, 17, will join the Sweethearts onstage for their first performance in months and, possibly, her last with them. The Sweethearts will embark on a musical journey from early R&B and Motown to Stax and modern funk in Soul Train at Geelong Arts Centre on December 8. Watts hopes the live-streamed gig will include her song Gone For Too Long, along with classics by soul icons such as Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. She wrote the song and performed it live in Europe last year. “I started off with the guitar line, the lyrics

and dark, viewers may be compelled to either end of the experience but are united in the same recognition of overall decay.” Melbourne-based jeweller Blanche Tilden will showcase her 25 years of work in May, in a nod to Geelong’s recent designation as a UNESCO City of Design. Also in May, artists Sharon Goodwin and Irene Hanenbergh combine their distinctive talents in imagery etched into three-dimensional objects. Later that month, the 2021 Geelong contemporary art prize will showcase the diversity and excellence of Australian painters.

Entries open on December 7 for the competition. The two following exhibitions, running till November 28, showcase and draw inspiration from the work of iconic bush artist Frederick McCubbin. Exhume the grave, beginning on August 14, features Juan Davila, Jill Orr, Polixeni Papapetrou and Anne Zahalka re-interpreting McCubbin’s work through the lens of cultural diversity and feminism. From September 4, Whisperings in wattle boughs will showcase McCubbin’s famous pioneer-themed art, such as his 1890 painting

A bush burial. The Geelong acquisitive print awards begin on August 28, with entries opening in March for established and emerging printmakers. The theme continues from September through to March 2022 with the work of Barbara Brash, who was a key artist in Melbourne’s printmaking revival of the ’50s and ’60s. Her richly-coloured and dynamic works convey a unique visual language built on experimentation and proficiency across a multitude of printmaking techniques. Throughout her career Brash tested the boundaries of the printed medium, often combining several methods into a single piece. The year ends with a 100th anniversary celebration of the prestigious Archibald Prize. Archie 100 presents a diverse selection of Archibald portraits from the past century and honours the artists who made the prize the most sought-after accolade in Australian art today.

A street artist on “the friction point between beauty and decay” will kick off Geelong Gallery’s 2021 – its 125th year in operation. For the past two decades Geelong-born street artist Tyrone Wright, known as Rone, has transformed derelict walls with hauntinglybeautiful female faces. Rone’s work peers out from beneath overpasses and on walls – in various states of decay – everywhere from New York to New Zealand. In 2014 he returned to Geelong to join a handful of artists in transforming Corio’s abandoned Powerhouse into an urban gallery. Rone’s latest site-specific installation will transform a room within Geelong Gallery in response to its collection and the architecture and history of the building. The commissioned installation draws inspiration from the Douglass Gallery, one of the most historical rooms in the building. “Working in my home town is special,” Rone said. “I had to leave to come back, but Geelong Gallery has given me the recognition to further my career.” The exhibition, beginning February 27, will track Rone’s work from early stencils to photographs of major installations that transformed abandoned spaces. “My show is an ode to abandoned spaces and a reminder to value the original treasure they once were,” he said. “Influenced by the architecture of the building and the toll of time, the central installation preserves an imagined moment of the space adorned at its finest and left to slowly deteriorate. “Featuring a push and pull between light

Tonight, Nancy discovers a connection between the poison that killed Tiffany and a serial poisoner from 17 years earlier.

Although Bana never quite matchess McAdams’ luminous presence, the leads have a pleasant chemistry.

MONDAY

HOME AND AWAY PRIME7, 7pm

The level of creativity required to keep the scandals coming thick and fast in Summer Bay after 33 seasons is cause for celebration. And in tonight’s 2020 finale, we are given just that, with a movie-length special that is sure to sate our appetites over the summer break. While we can rest assured that Alf (Ray Meagher, 4,159 episodes and counting) will always be part of the furniture, it’s the new arrivals that historically bring the most drama. Luke Arnold, who gave a stellar performance as Michael Hutchence in the 2014 TV special on INXS’ rise and fall, joins the cast as Lewis, whose past with the grieving Jas (The Bachelorette’s Sam Frost) might bring some joy.

Laughter really is the best medicine, and this acclaimed sell-out stand-up performance is sure to have you in stitches. Greg Davies – who you might recognise from The Inbetweeners or Taskmaster – was stung by his mother’s comment that he might not be quite “normal”. Ouch. So he’s on a mission to probe the human psyche to find out if anyone actually is. Quizzing his audience and pondering their responses, this is by no means scientific, but as all good comedians do, Davies shows us our flaws with such wit that we can’t help but laugh at the pettiness of the constant – and seemingly unattainable – pursuit of fitting in. Greg Davies stars in Greg Davies: The Back Of My Mum’s Head

Award winner sets sights on doctorate

Geelong Awards for People with a Disability employment category winner Ainslee Hooper. (Supplied)

Armstrong Creek consultant Ainslee Hooper hopes to add a doctorate to her accolades after winning at the Geelong Awards for People with a Disability this week. She won the awards’ employment category and plans to begin a PhD in anthropology next year studying the impact of COVID-19 on people with disabilities. “I had this life plan where I was going get my PhD at age 32,” she laughed. “I’m 42 and I haven’t even started it yet.” Ainslee won the employment award for her work helping employers to “remove invisible barriers” for people with disabilities, including advising the City of Melbourne this year. She uses a wheelchair, due to spina bifida, and said experiencing how others interacted

with her inspired her to get into consulting. “Having a disability, I started to see these gaps that shouldn’t be happening.” Jake Anderson won this year’s volunteering award for dedicating his time over the past 12 months to genU’s Gamer program, which uses video gaming as a tool for self-development. Michael Chan won the achievement award for using his art and personal story being diagnosed with high-functioning autism to overcome barriers. Teagan Whitten won the leadership and advocacy award for being “a driving force” on the Deakin University Student Association for a number of initiatives to ensure inclusion and accessibility. YOUR SAY Keep borders open The coronavirus is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. The virus cluster in Adelaide was appropriately handled by Premier Marshall. However, the reaction by West Australia, Queensland and Tasmania to close their borders in response to the SA cluster was over the top and lacked a nuanced approach demanded by other factors including travel, tourism and economic factors. Australian states can’t keep opening then closing their borders at a whim. This is not the way to run a modern economy. Closing borders only causes confusion and uncertainty and must make it difficult for airlines and travel operators to function and cause massive dislocation (and expense) to the travelling public. It’s time the national cabinet sorted this issue out. Why completely close state borders when an outbreak has been contained and localised? Why simply not designate and isolate local hot spot postcodes? State borders should remain open and if there are concerns about arrivals from say South Australia, why not test all arrivals from that state? If anyone returns a high temperature, fails to provide full itinerary of travel movements, or to pass a simple questionnaire on coronavirus, they should be refused entry or made to quarantine for 14 days at their own expense. It’s simply not acceptable to keep opening then closing borders, and while it may take more planning, it can be done. Alan Barron Geelong

FEATURING ... OUR COMMUNITY

John Eren MP comes through with school funding. (Supplied)

Upgrading Northern Bay P-12 College, brick by brick This year, families right across John Eren’s electorate of Lara have done an incredible job in supporting students to learn from home. He says that as children get back into the classroom, it’s important that they have the fantastic new learning spaces they deserve. “The Andrews government has built and upgraded more schools than any government in our state’s history, and the Victorian Budget 2020-21 continues that record of investment,” notes Mr Eren. “I was pleased to announce, along with the Minister for Education, that the Northern Bay P-12 College will receive a $15.31 million upgrade as part of the upcoming Victorian Budget 2020-2021.

“This is an investment in our kids and their future. Because every child, no matter where they go to school, deserves access to state-of-the-art facilities.” Following the $690,000 announced through the Infrastructure Planning and Acceleration Fund, the Victorian government is providing a further $15.31 million to Northern Bay P-12 College to deliver the next stage of the school’s master plan at Goldsworthy Road 9-12 Campus. This funding follows a previous $26.39 million which has been spent revitalising the Northern Bay campuses. “On top of this, across the Lara electorate, we have spent more than $58.7 million on

education and early education since 2014 alone. “Schools are the heart of our communities, so it makes sense that we’re investing in upgrades to support local jobs to drive our economic recovery.” This investment builds on the $1.18 billion as part of the Building Works Package announced earlier this year, which is creating space for more than 21,000 extra students in Victoria’s education system and creating about 1600 local construction jobs. Across Victoria, the Andrews government is delivering 1460 school upgrades – investing in new classrooms, fixing old buildings and delivering the learning spaces children deserve. “Our government’s unprecedented $7.2 billion

investment in Victorian school infrastructure is not only creating 7500 jobs,” Mr Eren continues, “it’s ensuring that every child has a great local school where they can achieve their best. “I’m so proud to see this Andrews government’s funding for the Northern Bay P-12 College. I’ve been extremely pleased as the local member to have worked alongside the school community every step of the way through this process.” Electorate Office, Shop 89, 1st Floor, Corio Village Centre, Bacchus Marsh Road, Corio. A workshop trio in Geelong West keeps your car in the right hands. (Louisa Jones)

Three enterprising experts in their field got together 15 years ago, opening the first of three side-by-side vehicle workshops in Geelong West, each catering to its specific European or British models. The newest workshop operates under the banner of Geelong West Automotive. This one specialises in Volvo, Peugeot, Renault, Citroen and Skoda. The German Automotive workshop is the Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volkswagen specialist. And the other, Hunter Cuthill, is all about Landrover, BMW and Mini Cooper. Current owners Adam Hunter, Ben Buckle, Mark Goodear and Adam Dres bring a combination of nearly 100 years’ experience working on all the major Euro brands – the sort of expertise highly valued by the drivers of out-of-the-ordinary vehicles.

All manner of mechanical, auto electrical and tyre replacement work is carried out by the high-tech workshops. Dealer-level diagnostic, repair and maintenance work are also on board, as is log book servicing that retains new car warranty. Ben says that the crews are well-equipped to look after just about everything needed to keep a car in tip-top shape, right from driving it new off the lot through to its senior years. “Not only do we have the world’s leading independent diagnostic software, but also all our technicians have received specific training on each brand,” explains Ben. “As well, we have all the special tools needed for repairs and servicing the luxury models. “We use the Hunter wheel alignment system, recommended for all major luxury and European vehicles. Our tyre servicing

equipment includes the Sice run- at tyre changer, again recommended for most Euro vehicles. And to top it off, we’re still cheaper when compared to capped price servicing from dealers.” Loan cars are available for a small fee, and customers can book a service online. Winter tennis season finally ends By Luke Voogt The final round of Tennis Geelong’s winter midweek season played out on Tuesday in a year of competition interrupted by COVID-19. The season started on July 14 as planned, with 51 teams across eight sections, but COVID-19 restrictions caused the suspension of play after round three. Competition recommenced on October 13 but Tennis Geelong abandoned the finals and awarding premiers due to the amount of missed matches. “The season has been played out with all but one of the original teams, showing how much the ladies love their tennis,” Tennis Geelong president Donna Schoenmaekers said.

In the final round, relative newcomers to section one Moriac faced off with Grovedale in a lopsided but competitive match, winning six sets to zero to move to third on the ladder. Moriac’s Fiona Blood and Bronwyn Tasker opened the ledger against Lisa Graham and Schoenmaekers with a 6-3 win and did not look back, dropping only six games each for the day. Grovedale pushed many games to deuce, but the greater consistency of the Moriac women prevented Grovedale from converting on the important points. This summer Tennis Geelong, in conjunction with Tennis Victoria, is co-ordinating two Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) events across the city.

UTR is a system that rates all players in the game from beginner to professional, regardless of their age or gender. “The aim of these events is to showcase how they can work, and to then help clubs co-ordinate events over the summer period,” Schoenmaekers said. “This is a great way for clubs to keep their players engaged over the summer break and get some new interest, as this is peak time for public interest in tennis.” A singles event will take place on Sunday with a doubles event occurring the following Sunday on December 6. Both events will take place at four different clubs across Geelong. Details: myutr.com

2020 Victorian State Titles Victorian Open Series

Local surfers dominate Victorian titles Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula surfers have dominated the Victorian titles in a year of competition shortened by COVID-19. Local grommets won in all six junior divisions, while Jan Juc’s Todd Rosewall won the open men’s title and Jan Juc junior Mia Huppatz came second in the open women’s. Huppatz also won the under-16s while her younger sister Isla placed equal first in the under-14s. Surfing Victoria ran two events for the junior and open shortboard series due to COVID-19 restrictions, and one longboard event that extreme weather cut short. Due to the inability to complete a full round of the longboard competition, Surfing Victoria crowned no state champions in 2020. The Victorian Bodyboard Titles also had a shortened season due to the pandemic, with 30 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 27 November, 2020

two events completed. Kneeboard Surfing Victoria was unable to crown state champions in 2020 due to the pandemic. Torquay’s Noah Bateup was among this year’s winners at the World Kneeboard Championships in February at Dunedin, New Zealand. Victoria’s COVID-19 lockdowns also prevented the state’s stand up paddle board championships from running in 2020. “On behalf of Surfing Victoria, I would like to congratulate all state champions in 2020,” Surfing Victoria chief executive officer Adam Robertson said. “It was one of the most challenging years on record and we look forward to having a more normal 2021.” Luke Voogt

Geelong Cricket Club will take on Essendon in the long-anticipated first round of Victorian Premier Cricket tomorrow. The Cats had a disappointing 2019-20 season finishing 13th, with five wins, after reaching the grand finals the season before. Geelong secured premiership-winning coach Nick Speak this April and the Cats hope the 53-year-old’s extensive experience will help the team improve. The English expat coached Dandenong to the 2017-18 Victorian Premier Cricket premiership, and he played 177 English County games for Lancashire and Durham between 1986 and 2001. Melbourne Stars-listed spinner Tom O’Connell’s arrival at Geelong could also give the Cats a boost in their quest to get back into the finals picture. The leg spinner took 20 wickets in 12 matches in 2018-19 before missing much of last season with a stress fracture. Star all-rounder Hayden Butterworth could be crucial to the Cats’ finals hopes, after a standout 2019-20. Butterworth took 29 wickets and scored 432 runs at an average of 33.32, earning selection into the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year. The 32-year-old dominated in Geelong’s outright win against Hawthorn-Kingston last December, taking 11 wickets (5/36 and 6/63) and scoring 42 runs. Geelong will look to skipper and occasional Victorian opener Eamonn Vines for leadership this season. The 26-year-old had a solid 2019-20 with the bat averaging 37.62. He played two Sheffield Shield matches and two for Victoria’s second XI last season. Paceman Brody Couch, who played seven matches with Victoria’s second XI last season, is also likely to spend more time with the Cats. Left-handed batsman and former Victorian and Australian junior rep Liam Blackford and Tom Jackson, who has already made five centuries in his fledgling career, are exciting prospects for the Cats. Essendon had a disappointing 2019-20 with the bat scoring the second-fewest runs (2647) in Premier Cricket. But the Bombers bowling was the complete opposite, with the side taking the second-most wickets (149), just one fewer than premiers Melbourne. Luke Voogt

SPORT Hawkins’ two-year extension official Geelong Cats have officially announced the re-signing of Coleman medallist Tom Hawkins for another two years. The announcement last Friday follows various reports since early October that the deal had already been effectively done. Hawkins debuted for the Cats in 2007 and has booted 603 goals – third-most in the club’s history – in his 277 games. He led the AFL in both goals and goal assists in 2020, en route to his first Coleman Medal and third All-Australian selection. “Tom’s form line is ascending, and we believe he will continue to improve as a player,” Cats football general manager Simon Lloyd said. “Tom is a team-first player, who looks to bring his teammates into the game and create opportunities for others as well as himself. “He is a leader both on and off the field and cares deeply about his teammates and all at the club. “Tom’s play over recent seasons has been elite and we are excited that Tom, with his family’s long history at the club, has again agreed to a new deal.” Hawkins helped the Cats win premierships in 2009 and 2011 and won the Carji Greeves medal as Geelong’s best and fairest in 2012. Hawkin’s father, Jack, played 182 games with Geelong and his grandfather Fred Le Deux

played 18 matches, while uncles Michael and Robb also played for the Cats. Last Thursday the Cats announced defender Jack Henry had agreed to a one-year contract extension. Henry has missed only two matches since debuting in round two, 2018. Originally selected in the rookie draft, Henry fills a key defensive role, and has also shown flexibility to go forward. He has played 66 games and kicked nine goals. His only goal of 2020 came at a key point of the third quarter in the Cats’ preliminary final win over Brisbane.

Henry placed eighth in the 2020 Carji Greeves voting and was named the club’s best young player in 2018. “Jack plays a key role for us and is a highly valued member of our team and our club,” Lloyd said. “He is a courageous and skilled player, and his teammates love playing with him.” Meanwhile, four-time St Kilda best and fairest winner Jack Steven announced his retirement after just one season with Geelong. Steven played 192 games and kicked 113 goals, and was twice named in the All-Australian squad. “We are happy for Jack that he has made this decision and wish him well in his future,” Lloyd said. “Jack had an outstanding career and we enjoyed having him play with us this year. “We look forward to seeing him enjoy the post-football part of his life.” Originally from Lorne, Steven was selected with pick 42 in the 2007 draft. He debuted in 2009 and established himself as an elite midfielder. After being open about his mental health battles, Steven moved to Geelong – in exchange for pick 58 – to be closer to family. He was stabbed in May just before the AFL season restarted after halting due to COVID-19. Police did not pursue the matter and Geelong Cats declined to elaborate in support of Steven.

Good weather, good fishing on the cards ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos Some fantastic reports this week with most species fishing very well and with some fantastic weather coming up. The snapper reports that have come in these past few days have been awesome with reports of fish between 1.5 – 4kg in fantastic numbers right along Clifton Springs – once again the channel is seeming to hold better quality fish up towards Portarlington. The other side of the channel is also holding some good numbers of quality fish. Point Wilson, The Quarries, Bird Rock and the 9 foot bank are all great locations to have a look and usually a good area if you want to avoid the crowds. Queenscliff is still fishing very well in the bight for calamari, boat anglers are having good success in the deep and shallow water. Land-based anglers are still slamming quality squid off the surf around bell reef, with black and red jigs being the standout colours. The Queenscliff cut has also fired up this week with the trevally and snapper fishing going bonkers! Casting soft plastics in the channel has resulted in some fantastic quality fish with trevally getting over 40cm and snapper reaching 60cm – fantastic size fish for this area and they seem to be in good numbers too. Along the west coast has been fishing quite well for angler’s deep dropping, with electrics pulling up a variety of tasty species. Blue eye trevalla, blue grenadier and gem fish all making an appearance on the deck. The surf coast estuaries are starting to fire up for both bream and perch, with most systems giving up some nice fish. Adam from Trellys Geelong fished alongside Rob Thornton in the Aire River at the weekend where the pair had a cracking session on bream, landing numerous to 42cm with Zman Grubz working best. The Barwon River has responded well to the warmer weather with redfin, perch and yellowbelly in good numbers. Casting spinners and soft plastics along the bank and structure where the fish are hiding is by far the best way to target them, with Queens Park being a standout location. Still plenty of reports of carp coming through in the same area, with corn being the best bait.

Cats trio sign extensions By Luke Voogt Lachie Henderson, Sam Simpson and Brad Close have signed contract extensions with Geelong Cats, the club announced on Monday evening. The Cats delisted Henderson last year, after he came over from Carlton in 2016, but picked him up again as the final selection of last year’s rookie draft. The 30-year-old returned to the side this year in round eight, shutting down several key forwards while playing in the Cats’ remaining 14 matches, including all four finals. “Lachie filled a key role in our defence for most of the season and had an impact in quelling key opposition forwards,” Geelong’s football general manager Simon Lloyd said.

“He is a team-first player who has always placed the needs of the group ahead of his own.” Henderson has played 185 games with Brisbane, Carlton and Geelong. With champion defender Harry Taylor now retired, Henderson will likely take on even greater responsibility in the Cats’ backline. Midfielder Simpson impressed this year, establishing himself in the Cats’ line-up before suffering a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old returned during the finals and played nine games during 2020. “Sam did very well when he earned his opportunity with his strong work ethic and impact around the ball being a highlight,” Lloyd said. “He was also very diligent in his rehab and that allowed him to come back into

the team during the finals and have a significant influence.” The former Geelong Falcon and son of former Cat Sean Simpson has now played 15 games since his debut in 2017. Close exploded onto the AFL scene by booting a goal with his first kick in his round eight debut against Fremantle. The 22-year-old forward-midfielder went on to play eight games and was an emergency throughout the finals campaign. “Brad played well as a forward and we see him having a good future at AFL level,” Lloyd said. “He will continue to develop his game through his strong drive and professionalism and we look forward to seeing Brad further enhance his game in 2021.”
