AN A-PEELING SUMMER
IT IS shaping as the year of the getaway. We are all craving some fun and relaxation, and there is no better place to experience both peace and joy than the Bellarine Peninsula. Be it a daytrip, a weekend away or a longer stay, the Bellarine is an amazing place to explore. And it is filled with a variety of options, many of them nature-based. On the south side of the peninsula you’ll find an array of surf spots and the family-friendly Barwon River. In the north, beaches look out over tranquil Corio Bay, with coastal paths and spectacular views across the water to Melbourne and the You Yangs. In between are beautiful seaside towns, rural landscapes and some of Australia’s best wineries, restaurants and local producers. Indeed, if good food and drink are your passion, you’ll never be short of options on the Bellarine. For those who like to be active, the peninsula has you covered as well. In or on the water there are great options for surfing, ocean swimming, paddling and fishing. On dry land, the coastal trails and the peninsula’s interior are both fantastic for walking and running, birdwatching, cycling or horseriding. While summer is the busiest season, it truly is a beautiful place to visit at any time of year. And the local community is excited to welcome visitors back. So please consider making the Bellarine your next holiday or day trip destination. You may never want to leave! CR STEPHANIE ASHER MAYOR, City of Greater Geelong

LIFE’S A BEACH
The Bellarine Peninsula has many beaches to explore.
Pictures: Louisa Jones
STAY safe while enjoying the best the Bellarine has to offer this summer with a dip at one of the peninsula’s several patrolled beaches. OCEAN GROVE BEACH A moderately safe, particularly during summer, when extensive bars dominate. The popular beach is best at high tide but watch out for rips - particularly at low tide. Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) patrols the beach and performs an average of eight rescues a year. THIRTEENTH BEACH, BARWON HEADS A haven for swimmers who want a patrolled beach away from the crowds. Barwon Heads/13th Beach SLSC patrols the beach and rescues an average of five people a year. Rips are a common feature of the beach, with safest bathing on the bars in the area which the club patrols. Sanat Casa Beach, Queenscliff Point Lonsdale SLSC patrols Santa Casa Beach from Boxing Day to Australia Day. The ‘bay beach’ is one of the safest on the peninsula and perfect for families. POINT LONSDALE BACK (SURF) BEACH This beach is patrolled by Point Lonsdale SLSC from now until Easter, but the club recommends it only for surfers and experienced swimmers. The hazardous beach has strong permanent rips and reefs, and the club has rescued up to 30 people a year at the beach. BARWON RIVER The mouth of the Barwon River is a popular spot for caravan park swimmers and those looking for calmer waters. But varying water depth, shifting banks and strong tidal currents can pose a threat. The Bellarine Peninsula also has plenty to offer for those who would rather surf. The region is home to a variety of surf breaks suitable for all standards, from beginners through to professionals. As long as the wind’s anywhere from the north-east to north-west, ideal conditions can be found anywhere along the ocean-facing side of the peninsula.
Harry and Kim enjoy a beach day. BLACK ROCK Provides an excellent right-hand point break in the right conditions. Black Rock works best on lower tides and north to north-west winds. Reforms on the beach at the inside of the point offer excellent opportunities for beginners. THE BEACON Between the eastern end of Thirteenth Beach and Barwon Heads Bluff is The Beacon, which can offer world-class waves on its day. Charelmont Reef offshore tends to break up the swell as it marches in toward The Beacon, creating a variety of sometimes-shifty peaks that create opportunities to catch waves even on the busiest days. Breaking on a variety of sand and rock, and best at low tide, The Beacon can produce outstanding barrelling waves. It’s a favourite haunt of visiting professionals and has hosted rounds of the Rip Curl Pro when conditions have been unsuitable at the event’s traditional Bells Beach site. Left and right-breaking waves are available along the length of The Beacon, with ample parking available. gobellarine

TOAST TO THE COAST Bring the kids to meet the sheep at Basalt Vineyard while you enjoy a wine tasting and tapas. Pictures: Supplied THE GREAT Ocean Road region may not be best known for wine, but dotted around the coast and countryside are some incredible cool climate wineries to discover. Create your own wine tour, stopping at cellar doors for tastings and sampling local produce, or settle in for a long lunch among the vines. Whether you’re looking for somewhere with good vibes and live music, a venue where the kids can run wild or a romantic weekend escape, here’s your vineyard hit list. BELLBRAE ESTATE - BELLBRAE One of the few wineries located right on the Great Ocean Road, Bellbrae Estate lies among the rolling hills of the Surf Coast. Five minutes from Bells Beach, the winery is naturally influenced by the sea and surf, so you might recognise some of the names of local surf breaks on the labels. Head to the cellar door for wine tastings, or swing past on Sundays for wood fired pizzas and live tunes. Spend a sunny arvo session on the lawn, with a glass of Winkipop sparkling shiraz or Bells syrah in hand. DINNY GOONAN WINES - BAMBRA Riesling and shiraz lovers won’t want to miss this one - these drops are what Dinny does best. The winery is part of the Otway Harvest Trail, a foodie pilgrimage which links the best food, wine and produce in the Otways. Call into the cellar door for a free wine tasting or sit out on the deck for lunch. They do a mean platter on weekends in the high season, packed with local cheeses and other goodies. Finish with a scenic stroll through the vineyard. BASALT VINEYARD - KILLARNEY Discover a boutique vineyard on the Great Ocean Road, between

Basalt Vineyard’s seafood dishes pair perfectly with its award-winning riesling. Warrnambool and Port Fairy. Basalt’s organic and biodynamic wines are enriched by the region’s fertile volcanic soils. Visit the cellar door for wine tastings and tapas. Or stay for a seafood-studded long lunch, paired with award-winning riesling. While you linger over good wine and conversation in the cafe, the kids can kick the footy or experience farm life. They’ll adore meeting the babydoll sheep and roaming ducks and chickens. KEAYANG MAAR VINEYARD - DIXIE Situated deep in dairy farming country, Keayang Maar is a family-run vineyard overlooking a dormant volcanic crater. Come for the bucolic views, stay for the gorgeous cool climate wines. The cellar door is open Wednesday to Sunday for wine tasting and pizzas. If you’re lucky you might even catch a gig. Keayang Maar is part of the 12 Apostles Food Artisans trail. If you have time, take a delicious detour to the other foodie hotspots on the map.
Pop into Bellbrae Estate for a cheeky wine and cheeseboard.

A GIN LOVER’S GUIDE
Gather your friends, spoil your family or take your partner for a great trip down the coast.
You won’t be limited for options when looking for a new favorite watering hole on the Great Ocean Road.
Apollo Bay Distillery’s SS Casino Dry Gin is a must-try.
DISCOVER boutique distilleries, hidden cocktail bars and local gin joints. There’s a spot to sip your favourite botanical blend on every leg of the Great Ocean Road. Join us as we tour the gin trail, tasting our way down the coast. Stop in for a quick gin flight or find a spot to spend an afternoon if you’re staying nearby (or you have a designated driver on hand!) Great Ocean Road Gin at Gin Kitchen – Aireys Inlet Great Ocean Road Gin makes small batch craft gins that evoke the spirit of the coast. They’re infused with locally sourced coastal botanicals including kelp, pigface and saltbush and their names are a nod to the local area. Don’t miss the award-winning signature dry gin, Guvvos, named after the Anglesea surf beach. What exactly does a gin inspired by the Great Ocean Road taste like? The best place to find out is the restaurant and cocktail bar Gin Kitchen. Find your favourite drop in the tasting room, or if you’re after a feed, the restaurant’s South East Asian menu pairs perfectly with bright gin cocktails. Apollo Bay Distillery This one’s for the storytellers and history buffs. Apollo Bay Distillery’s boutique gins are steeped in the local folklore surrounding the Shipwreck Coast. The distillery is housed in the old town post office and gins are made onsite using local botanicals. Meet the maker for a tasting paddle and see the beautiful copper column still. Be sure to try the SS Casino blend, named after the shipwreck in Apollo Bay. Then enjoy a G&T with a woodfired pizza on the deck overlooking the foreshore. Casterton Distilling Co. Head north from Portland and continue your gin journey. Inside Casterton’s historical Albion Hotel lies a small batch craft gin distillery where everything is made onsite. Stop in for lunch and a tasting and see what other goodies they have in store. The warm and friendly staff make a visit to Casterton as educational as it is delicious. Watch the makers at work, or take a masterclass with the head distiller to create your own dream gin.

THE GEELONG Gaol Museum is proud to present its newest exhibition ‘Stitched Up – Undressing our Convict Past,’ bringing to life the story of Australian prisoner uniforms from the First Fleet to a Covid-safe uniform from 2020. Each uniform tells the story of an infamous Australian prisoner you won’t believe some of the stories behind the uniforms. The Geelong Gaol has overlooked the town of Geelong for 170 years from behind a set of imposing gates. For 138 years it was a place of incarceration for men, women and children from all walks of life who were serving sentences imposed by the law and courts of Geelong. It has served roles as a maximum security prison for men and women; an industrial school for young girls; a hospital gaol; a military detention barracks and finally, a training prison. Today, the Geelong Gaol Museum is open to the public, where visitors can walk in the footsteps of history and experience the brutal conditions that prisoners once endured, from tiny cells to solitary confinement and the gallows. There are displays on the history of colonial Victorian gaols, prisoner stories, memorabilia and artefacts of the prison system from days past. Exhibitions include Executions at Geelong Gaol: looking at the six executions associated with the gaol; Hoodwinkers and Hooligans: a display of death masks and phrenology; The Escape of Edwin Eastwood: the notorious Faraday kidnapper; Last Man Standing: displaying a series of paintings from one of the last six prisoners at Geelong; and Saga Behind The Armour: the story of Ned Kelly through the eyes of people with connections to Geelong and the events of 1880. Once darkness falls, join Twisted History for nightly ghost tours, led by a character from the past who once lived or worked here, as you explore the haunted halls and cells by lantern light sharing the stories of those who once lived behind these walls, many of whom never left… Or perhaps you are searching for the old age answer of whether ghosts really do exist? Join our investigators as we explore the hot spots using a range of paranormal equipment, trigger devices and experiments to see if you can find the evidence to prove that the paranormal truly does exist. Geelong Gaol Museum is located at 202 Myers Street, Geelong. It is open from

Daisy has fun at Ocean Grove Park.
TIME TO PLAY THE BELLARINE Peninsula is blessed with a variety playgrounds that will keep your little tackers entertained for hours. Barwon Heads has two excellent playgrounds, one next to the bridge on the foreshore that has the added bonus of a wave-free shallow beach and the other, affectionately called Pirate Park, on Sheepwash Road. A huge wooden bow of a ship gives the park its name and there’s also a flying fox. Ocean Grove’s Kingston Park has two separate areas, one for younger kids and the other for the older ones with monkey bars and a flying fox. Ocean Grove Park has a great playground with a tunnel, walkway and a fireman’s pole. In the middle of town, Portarlington’s new playground has options for toddlers to teens and comes with gorgeous ocean views. There’s even a trampoline and an obstacle course. Point Lonsdale Road playground has dual wave slides and also comes with ocean views. Drysdale Reserve has a fully fenced playground with curved and spiral slides. It’s next to the footy ground and netball courts. On Jetty Road in Clifton Springs you’ll find a large climbing mat wall, swings and slides among all the other things you’d expect to find at a playground. Queenscliff’s Princess Park playground has four swings, one with a harness, and an astronomical arrangement where kids can learn more about astrology. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Wherever you find yourself on the Bellarine there will be a playground nearby to please the little ones.

AN A-PEELING SUMMER A THRIVING multipurpose performance space based in Drysdale, the Potato Shed plays a crucial role in connecting the local community, as well as local high schools Bellarine Secondary College and St Ignatius, to all forms of the performing arts.
