Shopfronts sit empty By Luke Voogt At least 85 shopfronts sit vacant in central Geelong and on Pakington Street, prompting calls for reduced commercial rates and lower rents. The Independent understands that commercial vacancy rates across Geelong have increased in 2020 – amid COVID-19 – compared to 2019. But empty “shopfronts are getting filled quickly” as restrictions continue to ease, according to Geelong Chamber of Commerce. The Independent’s survey found 62 vacant shopfronts in a section of central Geelong and another 23 on Pakington Street. The survey included sections of Malop, Little Malop, Ryrie, Moorabool and Yarra streets and three empty shops inside Belcher Arcade, which is slated for redevelopment. “It would make sense that people with low cash flow or that had just started businesses would find themselves in trouble with COVID,” Geelong Chamber of Commerce president Ben Flynn said. “And it’s really sad that some people’s dreams and businesses have not been able to survive.” But real estate chamber members reported that vacant shopfronts were filling quickly, Mr Flynn said. Easing COVID-19 restrictions and Geelong’s rapid population growth put the city “in a really good position to recover”, he said. “We’re finding that people have growing confidence to invest in 2021. “I think that the normality will return to the area and – I hope – businesses will be able to get that cash flow to make them profitable.” A Geelong store owner, who wished to remain anonymous, blamed high rents for the vacancies – an assertion supported by Ratepayers Geelong president Peter Mitchell. “I know people have looked for business locations in central Geelong and they’ve said that rents are high,” he said.

Mr Mitchell cited commercial rates in Geelong as a deterrent for small businesses. “What I would like to see is no further increases in commercial rates until they come into line with other councils.”

Families reunite as borders open By Luke Voogt Geelong locals embarked on a journey to reunite with loved ones as state borders reopened and the Gull Bus resumed services for the first time in eight months on Tuesday. Elizabeth McCaffrey, en route to see her grandchildren in Sydney, was one of about 130 passengers who boarded the airport shuttle service that day, according to management. The Wandana Heights grandmother was travelling to help her son Brendan, a former Geelong local, with his kids as he commenced extra hours at his job supervising shutdown

work. Ocean Grove’s Ruth Dorman was travelling to Tasmania to see her daughter for the first time in 11 months, after the state reopened to Victoria last Friday. “I think [the borders reopening is] absolutely fantastic for the whole of Australia – it needed to happen,” she said. Former Geelong local Cas Scott was returning to Sydney and taking one of her grandchildren back on an adventure with her. She and her partner travelled to Geelong to reunite with family last Tuesday after the New South Wales-Victoria border reopened. Gull Airport Service is now operating 13

daily services on weekdays and 10 services on weekends. The company had been running 17 daily services until COVID-19 restrictions forced it to suspend operations on April 2, according to general manager Scott Leeds. “We had 32 drivers and staff on JobKeeper,” he said. But with flights operating again and Queensland and South Australia reopening to Victoria on Tuesday, “everybody is back on deck”, he said. Mr Leeds has worked for the Gull Bus for 38 years and said the only other time the service had stopped in its 40-year history was the 1989 Australian pilots’ dispute.

Students create art from the inside Armstrong Creek students stepped inside worlds created by their own imagination, exploring underwater coral reefs and other scenes in a new virtual reality experience. “As we drew it, we were inside of our drawing, and we had to make it 3D,” explained Oberon High School year 9 student Ella Sieber. The students researched photos online and used paintbrush tools to recreate them while immersed in virtual reality (VR) through a headset. “We had a Finding Nemo theme,” Ella said. “You would hold these controllers in each

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning is seeking feedback on options to reform the planning system to deliver lasting protection of Melbourne’s agricultural land and guide decision making in our green wedges.

Submissions close at 5pm on Friday 5 February 2021.

The program aims to strengthen pathways for regional students into careers in emerging technology. Geelong Tech School will continue to run trials of Virtual X in semester one, 2021, in partnership with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and Gandel Philanthropy. “The COVID pandemic posed many challenges for students … as such, ACMI’s emphasis on strengthening tech learning and fostering creativity in young people, including students in the Geelong region, has probably never been more important,” Gandel Philanthropy chairman John Gandel said.

With nearly 20 years’ experience helping families find their home, realestateview.com.au is the trusted source for property.

hand and move them to create the shape. “I think it was a good opportunity. That was the first time I had used virtual reality. “I’m really into art and all that, so it was really good to have art but on new surface rather than paper.” The Oberon High School students were the first in Australia to trial the new Virtual X program. The students experimented with Microsoft Tilt Brush – an app allowing 3D painting in VR – to create scenes of lakes, cherry blossoms and more at Geelong Tech School last week.

A “flabbergasted” Corio couple discovered they had won $2.5 million on Tuesday afternoon – three days after their winning numbers came up on Saturday night. “We’re a bit overwhelmed at the moment. We can’t believe it!” the wife told lotto officials. “We had no idea! We just checked our ticket today. We’ve played every week for the last 40 years, and we’ve never won anything like this. “We won $1200 about 30 years ago, which was fantastic at the time, but this is even better! We’re a bit flabbergasted.” The couple joked about how they would share the $2,579,223 windfall from the Tattslotto draw. “I might have to ask my husband if he’ll share it with me. He might just give me the $23,” the wife said. “There are no problems about that – I’ll take the rest,” her husband laughed. The money would help make a memorable Christmas for their family, the couple revealed. “We’ve got four kids so they might be getting a very big Christmas present,” the wife declared. “We’ll have to get something for ourselves as well. It hasn’t sunk in yet so we’ll have to think about it some more.” The couple bought their ticket from Corio Lucky Lotto, to the delight of owner Jack Karpinski. “They were sitting there like stunned mullets in shock,” he said. “It felt great to be able to help them realise they are now multi-millionaires.”

City serves up first major event By Luke Voogt Major events are set to make a long-anticipated return to Geelong after council secured hosting rights for the 2021 Oceania Regional Seniors Tennis Championships next March. The tournament is the first major event that council has announced in more than eight months since COVID-19 hit. Council’s major events portfolio chair Ron Nelson described the announcement as another step on the region’s road to recovery from the pandemic. “Major events play a hugely important role

in our local economy and they’ve been sadly missed during 2020,” Cr Nelson said. “It’s so positive to see a tournament of this size and stature coming to Geelong … we look forward to welcoming competitors from near and far.” An estimated 300 players aged 30 and above will descend on Geelong for five days next March, creating business for accommodation and hospitality providers. The tournament will take place from March 4 to 8 at Geelong Lawn Tennis Club, with support from council via Geelong Major Events funding. Geelong Lawn Tennis Club president Bob

Spurling described securing the event as “a major coup”. “We will have the opportunity to showcase the greater Geelong region to a host of visitors… and we’re committed to delivering an event of the highest standard,” he said. “Our aim will be to create a lasting impression of not only the tennis experience, but also to encourage all visitors to spend some time exploring the great attractions our region offers.” The tournament is part of the International Tennis Federation Seniors Tour and rates behind only the World Seniors Championships in terms of status and rankings points.

Dining has street appeal Thirty-eight temporary outdoor dining permits equating to more than 530 seats have provided a boost for Geelong hospitality businesses recovering from COVID-19. Parking spaces converted into al fresco drinking and dining spaces allowed Union Street Wine Bar to host up to twice as many customers during the first weeks of reopening. “At the stage that it was put in we could only have eight people in the bar, so the extra seats were pretty significant,” co-owner Andy Leigh said. Council also provided removable white picket fencing to create a barrier between the outdoor dining spaces and the road. Following a further easing of restrictions, the bar can now accommodate 16 patrons indoors but the extra eight seats remained “very beneficial”, Mr Leigh said. Neighbouring brewery Valhalla Taproom

also benefited from the set-up, which allowed the venue to have 10 more outdoor guests. The Beach House at Eastern Beach is taking advantage of a permit for 20 seats, 10 tables and eight umbrellas extending past its existing al fresco area. Fisherman’s Pier and Sole Waterfront Café are using the timber decking and paved areas near the corner of Yarra Street and Eastern Beach Road for 50 outdoor sears. In East Geelong, restaurant Lucy Lockets is making use of a permit for 16 seats with umbrellas and temporary barriers outside. Council has waived all outdoor dining fees for 2021 and refunded 2020 fees to help hospitality businesses recover from the impacts of the pandemic. It has also waived A-frame permits and food premises registrations. Luke Voogt

Geelong council’s forecast deficit has ballooned by $8.8 million in the three months since councillors adopted the budget on June 30. A report presented to council on Tuesday night, covering July 1 to September 30, forecast an operating deficit of $33.4 million compared to the initial estimate of $24.6 million. The report attributed the higher deficit to COVID-19 support packages and revenue loss during the pandemic, with mayor Stephanie Asher describing it as “not been completely unexpected”.

“Without a doubt” 2020 has been the quietest of Geelong Royal Children’s Hospital Auxiliary’s 44 years helping sick children, according to president Jan Crockart. “We’ve had nothing on all year,” she said. Last year the auxiliary raised $56,000 through several market stalls and its annual 200-person high tea, which Jan described as a “pretty normal” amount for the group. “Of course we had to cancel all those things this year, which is a real pity because it’s the 150th anniversary for the hospital,” she said. “It was going to be a really big year.” COVID-19 restrictions brought most of the auxiliary’s fundraising to a halt and its mostly older membership had to be extra cautious during the pandemic.

But the members are determined to make the most of the remainder of 2020, channelling their Christmas spirit into a new pop-up shop in Belmont. The shop opened on Monday and sells babywear, scarves, Christmas decorations, toys, homewares, rugs and more in support of The Royal Children’s Hospital. A few dozen shoppers had walked in during the shop’s first two hours on Monday morning, with some even donating items such as wool, knitwear and tea towels for the cause. Jan was thrilled to reunite with other members at the shop, which will remain open at Belmont Arcade until December 11.

COVID-19 restrictions have forced City Hall to cancel the annual Geelong Waterfront New Year’s Eve fireworks, which normally attract crowds of 20,000 to 50,000 people. Surf Coast Shire has also cancelled fireworks in Lorne to protect the health and safety of local residents.

Nurses thanked for 2020 By Luke Voogt Nurses who spent 2020 “head-to-toe in plastic” fighting COVID-19, including Armstrong Creek’s Laura Broad, received national recognition on Wednesday. The assistant nurse unit manager started at Barwon Health North’s COVID-19 testing clinic in March, just days after her grandmother’s funeral. Soon after, the pandemic prevented her from visiting her mum, still undergoing treatment for breast cancer diagnosed several years ago, her immunocompromised dad and her grandfather, whose nursing home went into lockdown. “It was difficult but I was more concerned about mum – I wasn’t able to be there for her,” the 25-year-old said. “A part of me didn’t want to see them as well because I could never have forgiven myself if I had given COVID to them.” Laura herself was vulnerable to the disease due to lung damage from surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in 2011 to correct a spinal condition. “I had incredible nurses the whole time,” she said. “That’s exactly why I got into nursing.” Her vulnerability failed to stop her volunteering for the testing clinic. “They were having trouble staffing it at first because no one wanted to work out here – I think everybody was sort of afraid,” she said. But Laura was confident Barwon Health had the necessary precautions to protect her. She was part of a versatile unit of nurses that filled staffing shortfalls across University Hospital Geelong, but soon became a permanent member of the clinic. While she admitted wearing hair nets, face shields, gowns, masks and even sometimes gumboots could get tiring, she was “so grateful”

for the colleagues she met. “Working through the pandemic has been so much easier because of the people I work with.” Gestures of appreciation such as a hamper from Fyans Park Kindergarten and gifts from strangers “did not go unnoticed” either, she said. Laura, who is beginning post-graduate

study next year, welcomed Australian College of Nursing’s nationwide thank you to nurses on Wednesday, aimed at raising funds for 50 $5000 scholarships “It would be a massive help for people to up-skill and achieve what they want to do in their careers,” she said. Extra Geelong train services By Luke Voogt Twenty extra trains, including 15 peak-hour services, will travel between Geelong and Melbourne each week beginning January 31, state government has announced. An updated timetable for the line includes 10 new services in each direction between Geelong and Melbourne, with a train operating every 20 minutes throughout the day. The plans also include 25 new services

to and from Wyndham Vale on the Geelong-Melbourne line. Altered stopping patterns will result in 20 extra services stopping at Little River, 15 at Lara, 35 at Corio, 30 at North Shore, 25 at Geelong and five at Waurn Ponds. The additional trains are among 450 extra services for Victoria that Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll announced on Tuesday. Under a “timetable redesign” an extra 280 new metropolitan trains and 170 regional services will operate across Victoria each

week, according to Mr Carroll. “We’re introducing the biggest timetable change in a decade,” he said. The announcement comes as state government prepares to move to the final ‘COVID normal’ stage of its reopening roadmap. Mr Carroll said the new timetable would deliver more peak-hour trains on both regional and metropolitan lines. The extra services would allow people to better stagger their weekday travel and

reduce crowding as more people return to public transport. The new timetable follows last week’s announcement of a new express track through Werribee, 8km shorter than the current route through Wyndham Vale. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan announced a $2 billion investment, matching a 2019 federal election commitment, to begin construction of stage one of the “Geelong Fast Rail project” in 2023.

Mauboy hails from Darwin and rose to fame after coming runner-up on the fourth season of Australian Idol in 2006. She went on to record several top 10 Australian hits and represented her country at Eurovision in 2014. “We are absolutely thrilled to provide an opportunity for many young and inspiring students to meet their hero and an outstanding ambassador,” Indigenous Literacy Foundation executive director Karen Williams said. Australian pop icon Jessica Mauboy visited Leopold Primary School virtually on Monday in recognition of its fundraising efforts for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The school earned the online visit for raising $6525 for the foundation since 2011 through activities such as the Great Book Swap. Grade 2 teacher and Leopold Primary’s Great Book Swap co-ordinator Robyn Garnham described the singer as a “brilliant role model” for the pupils. “These kids have done it hard this year – as have many – but after two long stints of remote learning, a treat like this is an absolute blessing,” she said. “Jessica is brilliant and having her here for our school was so amazing.” Mauboy sang The Barramundi Song and read children’s book No Way Yirrikipayi! in a mixture of Tiwi, Mangarryai and English for the pupils. NEWS

MY GEELONG Award-winning Grovedale actor Michael Chan speaks to Luke Voogt about touring the US, the pandemic and his recent accolades in celebration of International Day of People with Disability yesterday.

How does winning at the 2020 Geelong Awards for People with a Disability feel? I feel very honoured having my achievements recognised despite what has been an inactive, challenging year for me. I really owe Back to Back for the opportunity to perform onstage in front of a great audience. Without their close support and guidance I would never have been able to follow my dreams in this way.

What do you like to do locally? I like having a coffee, wandering around the waterfront and going to the library. Once a week I eat out with my parents at restaurants – it doesn’t have to be the Chinese that we normally cook at home. I enjoy driving to Torquay, Geelong Botanic Gardens and the Bellarine Peninsula to get fresh air while viewing spectacular scenery. I help my parents at home with watering the gardens and cooking, as they’re getting older. In my spare time, I took on council’s My Story project to write about growing up with high-functioning autism in a traditional Chinese family. How are you coping with COVID-19? COVID-19 brought 2020 – which was meant to be my finest year – to a sudden, grinding halt. All our productions and tours were cancelled. At the same time my hospitality shifts were cancelled as restrictions forced sporting events to operate behind closed doors. Despite losing my acting gigs and casual jobs, I’ve been able to make ends meet through JobKeeper whilst supporting my family. I kept active by chatting with friends on social media and attending online meetings. I’m looking forward to future productions and filming projects as the COVID-19 situation improves.

(Rebecca Hosking) 222767_07

How did you get into acting? In 2016 I joined Back to Back Theatre and got involved in workshops, TV and film, and other productions. I enjoy hanging out with a bunch of amazing, enthusiastic people who take risks and challenge themselves to gain creative writing and improvisation skills. Last year I landed a role in The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes. We toured across the US to perform in January, travelling to cities like New York and Boston – this experience was one in a million. Despite our hectic schedule, we visited fascinating places including Times Square and Brooklyn Bridge. It was an unforgettable trip and I began to cry before we flew home because we had become so close – like a family. In April we were fortunate enough to win the Green Room Award for best ensemble.

What does International Day of People with Disability mean to you? It’s about informing the community that people with disability have talents and capabilities. They want their stories to be heard, and feel welcomed and valued.

Tell us about you… I’m 37 and was born in Swan Hill. We settled in Geelong when I began primary school. I normally work in hospitality at venues including Flemington and Moonee Valley racecourses. My hobbies include running, power walking, weight training, travelling, singing, listening to music and cooking.

A veteran policeman, who thought he would die after being repeatedly stabbed by an ice-crazed driver on the highway at Batesford, has been awarded the Victoria Police Star. Senior Sergeant David Reither, who was transferring from Geelong to Ballarat at the time, said the award, one of the highest in the force, closed another chapter in a career of more than 27 years.

FRIDAY FEATURE

Battle axe beauty Architect Jane Macrae’s Ocean Grove townhouse showcases the “amazing” possibilities of battle axe blocks. She shares her design secrets with Luke Voogt.

The Macrae family’s Ocean Grove home. Below: Fin, Lachlan, Jane and Gus Macrae. (Pictures: Louisa Jones) 220614

J

ane Macrae saw potential every time she drove past a battle axe block on a quiet Ocean Grove street near a friend’s house. “Battle axe blocks were on my radar,” the mother-of-two and architect told the Independent. “I kept driving past it and telling my clients, ‘I know what you could do with that’. One day my husband Lachie said, ‘why don’t we buy it?’” The couple’s coastal townhouse now stands on the block as a two-storey testament to Jane’s creativity.

‘‘

most people are surprised by the amount of space we have - Jane Macrae

’’

“It shows you can still get that passive, sun-drenched house on a battle axe block, with high ceilings, a small footprint and good outdoor spaces,” she said. “Our boys love that it’s a double-decker house. They always wanted a double-decker house and a double-decker bed.” The house combines Jane’s talents as an architect and Lachlan’s know-how as a land surveyor. When they bought the block in late 2017, an agreement between the previous owner and council allowed only a single-storey house. But Lachlan knew from experience they could amend the existing permit – so they took a gamble and bought the land. “They ended up selling the front block after selling ours,” Jane said. “Worst case scenario, I would have to do something single-storey that was interesting. “We just made sure we complied with everything and that we didn’t overlook or overshadow neighbouring properties. “Frustratingly, the paperwork got stuck with council for a good six to seven months, even

though there were no objections. “Sometimes there’s no rhyme or reason – I had a two-lot subdivision [for a client] that went in after mine but it was approved before.” After getting council approval, the couple began building their ‘battle axe baby’, which they completed in September 2019. A key to their plan was to “abandon the idea of a traditional backyard” and hug the southern boundary as tightly as possible. Now the north-facing front yard serves as a de facto backyard, with the house on the north of the subdivided block providing privacy. “Every room in the house except for the bathroom has northern light,” Jane said. Outside, Colorbond and timber combine to create a striking coastal façade. “The timber offsets really nicely with the darker Colorbond,” Jane said.

Inside, high ceilings and a “void” between the ground and top floors make the home “feel bigger”, according to Jane. “I think most people are surprised by the amount of space we have,” she said. “Upstairs belongs to the kids – which is really good because if it’s messy, it’s out of sight. They can yell out and throw dirty laundry down the void.” A little storage nook is home to school bags, Beyblades and Pokémon cards, while a hollow bookcase between the dining and living rooms adds to the home’s open feel. The couple also built a separate home office, which Jane said had “been amazing for work-life balance” – particularly during COVID-19. “It feels good to leave the front door and walk 10m to the office.”

Usually Jane will time her client meetings or presentations for when Lachlan is out. “Lachie’s in the field a lot – he normally only has two days of drafting,” she said. “The kids understand that when you’re in there you’re working. “For the most part, it’s been a blessing, except on the weekends, when it kind of entices you back to finish off little odds and ends.” The office allowed Lachlan to be “pretty loud on the phone” and listen to heavy metal while working without disturbing the family, Jane said. “Sometimes he’ll put on the headphones if he’s listening to what the boys call ‘daddy’s angry music’.” The north-facing windows, high ceiling, good ventilation and coastal breeze help keep the energy bills low. “We only use the air conditioning on the really hot days,” Jane said. “We’re hoping to get [solar] panels in the future.” The house showcases Jane’s almost two decades as an architect, which began at a small firm in Melbourne. Her creativity took off when she landed a job in London designing concepts to make holiday resorts “special and unique”. “That was a weird surreal moment of pure design joy,” she said. “I didn’t have to know how it would stand up, I just had to conceptualise it. They would handball it to another architect to do all the problem-solving and regulations.” After nine months, Lachlan joined her in England and the couple went on a “reverse honeymoon” across Europe before returning to marry in Australia. Years later, Jane’s experience exploring architectural possibilities is apparent in her home. “I think battle axe blocks are often missed opportunities – there are some amazing things you can do with them.” 15 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 4 December, 2020

Get your Christmas binge on The holiday season is upon us and ‘tis the time for many traditions, including binge-watching the same old Christmas films we know and love. But which classic makes us feel the most Christmassy? Interested in finding the films that fill us with the most festive spirit, the experts at OnBuy. com created a Christmas film Index. They set a points-based system where each festive element in the movies, such as the number of Christmas trees and how many times Santa appears, would earn a point (from 1 to 3) based on how Christmassy they are. Using this points-based system, at the end of the study, OnBuy.com was able to crown the most Christmassy film of all time.

Tis the season for Christmas movies. (iStock)

The results Starring Jim Carrey, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is crowned the most Christmassy film of all time with 586 points. The film scored the most points (50) for Christmas outfit appearance and presents appearance (66 points) out of all the considered films. Although the word Santa is said 11 times, adding 22 points to the scoreline, and the classic down the chimney scene occured four times (adding 8 points), the only Christmas element that the film didn’t score points on was Santa Claus appearance – if we don’t count Grinch dressing up in Mrs. Claus’ clothes. The second place revealed that there’s no Christmas story more Christmassy than Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (2018), scoring 484 points. With an animated version of Mr Grinch dubbed by Benedict Cumberbatch, the film got the highest points for Christmas food appearance

(15 points), carol singers appearance (4 points), sleigh and/or reindeer appearance (14 points) and down the chimney (18 points). Considered a modern-day Christmas staple, Love Actually makes the top three with 406 points. This festive flick scored the highest

points (135) for Christmas trees appearance but zero points for kisses under mistletoe. Scoring only 97 points, the least Christmassy film of all time is the musical White Christmas. Its highest score is 19 points for the number of times the word Christmas is said. The five

Historical figures rise from grave By Luke Voogt

Colin Mockett, Shirley Power, and Bryan and Maureen Eaton as Geelong historical figures Captain Foster Fyans, Elizabeth Austin, James Harrison and John Batman’s tragic wife Eliza. (Reg Ryan)

“You need to read, not just the biographies, but what other people thought of them – the obituaries and the obituary response in the papers. From there you get a fairly good idea. Then you put yourself in the position of recreating the person and their character.” Mockett looked forward to playing one of his favourites, Charles Brownlow, the namesake of the AFL’s iconic best and fairest medal. “People expect him in football gear but [his main contribution was as a] watchmaker and

silver smith who prevented the collapse of the then VFL,” he said “If you want to see his work you don’t go to Kardinia Park, you go to Geelong Gallery. The more I read about Charlie Brownlow, the more I find he was purely a gentleman.” The rules Brownlow set forth while helping to found a local rowing club give a clue to his character, according to Mockett. “He wouldn’t accept any bad language or poor behaviour, and he lived his life that way.”

Eliza Batman (nee Callaghan) makes her appearance alongside philanthropist Elizabeth Austin and Geelong’s first female mayor Zilla Crawcour on February 27. Squatter Caroline Newcomb, medical pioneer Mary De Garis and novelist Ellen Davitt also join the all-women show. The dead will rise again next February in a graveside tour which brings Geelong’s pioneers, suffragettes and historical figures back to life. Geelong’s famous sons and daughters rested in peace during the coronavirus pandemic, with restrictions causing the cancellation of the tours, Drop Of A Hat Production’s Colin Mockett said. But the theatre company had used that time to recruit more of their comrades from the ranks of the dead, he said. “We walked around the cemetery and the people we discovered, and stories we discovered around them, are fascinating.” Among the new characters is Eliza, the tragic widow of John Batman, best-known for his role in the founding of Melbourne. “She wound up working as a prostitute in Geelong West where she was murdered by a client,” Mockett said. “That’s not the sort of thing you’d expect from the wife of the person credited as founding the whole region.” The tours will return for five consecutive weekends beginning February 27, with a historical figure leading visitors on a walk to meet Geelong Eastern Cemetery’s other famous ‘residents’. “You’ve got a bunch of actors in the middle of grave diggers and administrators,” Mockett said. He and his thespian crew have been conducting the tours for decades, which they began after gaining a reputation for bringing back historical characters for festivals and other events. “You can’t afford to make any mistakes – you really have to do your research,” he said.

Retirement, your way A life of independence, security and friendship for retirees is the enticing offer from Geelong Grove Retirement Community. The pretty village, with a relaxed environment of wide streets and thriving gardens, is five kilometres south of Geelong and a short car trip from picturesque Corio Bay and beautiful beaches. Whatever you are looking for in your retirement, says village and sales manager Peter Hinck, you will be spoilt for choice in this welcoming community. “Geelong Grove is close to University, Epworth and St John of God hospitals. Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre is nearby, with major supermarkets, cafes and professional services. And you are never too far away from a golf course, with Barwon Valley Golf club also within easy reach.” He adds that public transport is made easy, with bus stops right outside the village gates, along with a village bus which caters for weekly shopping trips and other community outings. “Each single-storey home has generous living spaces, along with a private courtyard where you can create your own garden – whether it’s flowers, vegetables or herbs,” Peter says. “It’s a great place for families to visit and to enjoy barbecues – or for just sitting back and relaxing, reading a book in the sun. Geelong Grove caters for everyone. “Social activities are right on the doorstep for when the mood strikes. There’s always something to do – from bus trips to fashion shows to catching up with friends and neighbours in the community centre. “There’s the gym for workouts, regular group exercise classes, and the woodwork shed for the tinkerers. Or perhaps get into some friendly competition by hitting the green for lawn bowls, have a game of petanque or rack up the

billiard balls. If the mood strikes for something more relaxing, collect and read a book from our wonderful library, be pampered in the onsite hairdressing salon, or simply take a stroll around the village and admire the gardens.

“We find that life can be busy or cruisy, depending on what you want out of retirement.” Private one-on-one inspections are being conducted, with current COVID-safe industry guidelines in place.

FEATURING ... SENIORS

Doing things the Kalkee way Robert is a retired IT whiz who believes actions speak louder than words. So, as often as possible, the Geelong grandfather picks bunches of beautiful roses from his garden and gives them to his wife, Mary, as well as to the staff looking after her at Uniting AgeWell Kalkee Community, Nangatta. “They’re giving Mary the round the clock care she needs and deserves, that I was simply unable to give her at home any more,” Robert, 69, explains. “And I want them to know I’m grateful.” They do – and they also appreciate the chocolates he often brings in, although his and Mary’s smiles are all the thanks they need. Mary, 71, has vascular dementia. And Robert is quick to admit that during the lead-up to when she moved in a few months ago he was “exhausted and fooling myself that things would get easier as the disease progressed.” He was also worried with all the uncertainty around COVID-19, what would happen to Mary if something happened to him. So Mary, a mad-keen Collingwood supporter moved in, and the family has not looked back. And for the first time in a long while, Robert can spend quality time with Mary instead of devoting all his energy to carer duties. “They’re so kind at Nangatta, and Mary is happy there,” Robert says “With hindsight, we should have done this years ago.” Nangatta care manager Glenda Harvey says they’ve rolled out new CD players which are easier for residents to use, so there’s one for each bedroom and have just created a new lifestyle area where residents do crafts, Tai Chi and enjoy cooking demonstrations. Nangatta specialises in caring for people with dementia and provision of palliative care to meet the growing need for both in the

community. And residents’ wellbeing is always first and foremost – even to the extent of facilitating them to be with their pets, which are not only permitted but encouraged. When one resident moved in with her Chihuahua, a special doggie door was installed for it in her bedroom. Close by is Kalkee Community, Murray – home to a group of residents who also enjoy living their best lives possible with great food, leisure activities, care and comfort Many used to be volunteers for Uniting AgeWell over the years, others have joined through their contacts with the Uniting Church

in Belmont. Many lived at Uniting AgeWell’s Kalkee independent Living Units – just a rose garden away from the residential facility – and moved in as part of the continuum of care. What they have in common is they all want to stay within the community they love and to be close to family and friends. Another thing they have in common is that they enjoy themselves. Like Gwenda, who loves walking in the beautiful garden and helping pick and arrange flowers for the dining room tables. She’s also a bit of an arts and crafts whiz. It’s a busy time of year, with residents gearing up for Christmas and for going on bus trips

again now that restrictions are lifting. Both residential facilities offer respite care, which Glenda says is particularly welcome for carers over Christmas. Glenda says there are many clients who come in for respite care and end up staying because it works out so well. Like Russell who, at the family GP’s recommendation, came in for a short stay to Nangatta and is still there! And now Russell, his wife Carole and their family have joined the GP as members of the Nangatta fan club. For more details on Uniting AgeWell, phone 5243 9566 or visit www.unitingagewell.org

Give yourself the gift of hearing Audiologist Ashlee Willis from Geelong Hearing Aid Services says that as the holiday season is fast approaching, she and her team are excited to celebrate together. “For many people,” Ashlee notes, “it will be the first time this year that we will be able to see and spend time with our families – or maybe it’s a virtual Christmas this year. “Either way, it’s a wonderful time of year, and we at Geelong Hearing want to make sure people can enjoy the special moments with friends and family. Be it in person or over the phone, we are here to help them make sure they never miss a beat. “Our experienced and caring staff want to work with them to help them hear this Christmas.” At any time, hearing aids, she says, help increase understanding, confidence, and community involvement. “Give yourself the gift of hearing this Christmas,” is Ashlee’s advice.

Extra challenges in the time of COVID-19 “With physical distancing and face masks encouraged to continue, these measures put extra strain on those with hearing loss due to the muffling of our voices and not being able to lip read to help understand. “There are so many options available when it comes to hearing aids. The days of big and bulky are over, with more than one style and size to suit everybody. “But despite the huge toll hearing loss can have on health and wellbeing, only one in five people who could benefit from wearing hearing aids actually uses them. We can help change those statistics. “The time to improve your hearing – and life – is now! Our friendly team is ready and waiting.”

Do you avoid gatherings or going out?

Geelong Hearing Aid Services, 96 High Street, Belmont. Opens 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 5243 1019 or www.qualtone.com.au

“If the answer is yes, then it’s time to come speak to our friendly team and see what we can do to help you hear. “We have some amazing deals at the moment, for private, pensioners and DVA clients. These include free, no-obligation hearing aid trials, as well as free tests until December 11.

USED CAR CHECKOUT

Subaru BRZ 2012 - 2019 By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Subaru BRZ is a full-on sportscar that’s delightful to drive. It has real RWD handling, excellent throttle control and steering that talks to you. It’s just perfect for early morning Sunday drives on your favourite bits of road. The Subaru is offered with a six-speed manual or an auto with the same number of forward ratios. The auto is a good one – but simply not in the class of a ‘real’ gearbox. The engine features Subaru’s trademark four-cylinder boxer layout and has a capacity of 2.0 litres. It puts out a neat 200 horsepower (147 kW) in its original format. Engine power is nothing to get excited about and even when revved to the heavens you don’t get a huge amount of hard acceleration. This is fine with us, we enjoy the skill of getting the best from a car by having it in the right gear from moment to moment. The BRZ first went on sale Down Under in July 2012. Anticipating a huge demand Subaru Australia made the interesting move of selling it only on the internet. It took just over three hours for a complete sellout of the initial shipment. After that initial burst of sales the BRZ eventually went on sale in dealerships. New car prices were lowered over the years as the ‘newkid-on-the-block’ excitement faded and sales dropped to more normal levels. The front seats are low and may prove awkward for some to get down into. But once you’re in there they’re firm, but comfortable, with good leg and headroom. Though the BRZ has four seats rear legroom is very cramped, indeed it’s non-existent when the front seats are all the way back. Boot space is reasonable although Subaru Australia opted for a full-size spare wheel,

The 2012 Subaru BRZ and 2015 Subaru BRZ. (Pictures: Supplied)

which takes up a huge amount of space. If ever a car needed a space saver wheel it’s the BRZ. A BRZ S pack by Subaru Tecnica International (STI) was offered from mid 2013. It features lowered suspension; a body kit consisting of a front spoiler, rear diffuser and spoiler, and side skirts. It rides on 17-inch black alloy wheels. Inside there’s a Duracon gear knob on manual boxes. The engine gains a push-button start with the large button done in brilliant red. Subaru BRZ S pack was only available to new-car buyers, it could not be retrofitted. So it may become a sought-after model in years to come and even go up in price. No promises, though. Late in 2016 BRZ received minor design tweaks, another six horsepower and revised suspension tuning. Exterior changes included LED headlights and taillights, a wider and lower bumper design and new-design 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside there’s optional red stitching and

BRZ embossing on the front seats, modified instruments and a new steering wheel. Incidentally, Toyota also makes a version of the Subaru BRZ, called the 86. It’s built in the Subaru factory and has a Subaru engine, albeit with some Toyota fuel injection components and a different tune.

How much? What to look for Check for a full service record, ideally from a Subaru dealer. Has the BRZ been thrashed, either legally at track days or illegally in street racing? A roll-cage is a clue, as are signs of one having been removed. Extra instruments may be for show, or intended to keep track of constant hard work during races. Unevenly worn tyres are a giveaway, as are damaged rims. Lowered suspension is easy to spot.

Cats fall short in huge run chase By Luke Voogt

Hayden Butterworth drives against Essendon on his way to 48. (Wes Cusworth)

Geelong has lost its season opener at Kardinia Park despite a valiant attempt to chase down Essendon’s massive total of 1/325. The Cats’ attack had no answers for reigning Jack Ryder medallist James Seymour and Michael Hill after sending the bombers in on a greenish wicket. The joint best-and-fairest winner batted through all 50 overs on his way to 142 not out while Hill smashed 106 not out off just 79 balls. Geelong spearhead Brody Couch claimed the Cats’ only scalp, dismissing Aaron Ayre for 68 (off 65 balls). All-rounder Hayden Butterworth and fellow opener Eamonn Vines started well in pursuit of the huge total. They put on 88 runs before Liam Molloy ran out Butterworth with a direct hit for 48. Vines batted on for 64 but the Cats lost a couple of quick wickets after his dismissal. Number 6 batsman Liam Blackford fought valiantly for 39 not out off as many balls with the tail swinging the bat, but the Cats fell 50 runs short finishing with 9/275. Jack Wrigglesworth scored 24 off 16 before Seymour dismissed him for his second wicket, capping off a brilliant day for the batting all-rounder. Tomorrow the Cats travel to Princes Park to face the Blues, who defeated reigning minor premiers Melbourne University in round one. Carlton finished fifth last season and made the second round of finals before COVID-19 halted play. The Blues boast a dangerous bowling attack including captain-coach and former Victorian player Evan Gulbis, who took 4/38 in round

one. The all-rounder joins fellow former state reps Cameron Stevenson and Xavier Crone in the bowling line-up, along with Matthew Wilson, left-arm spinner Eddy O’Sullivan and all-rounder Tom Smyth. Smyth and younger brother Harrison were in good form with the bat at the weekend scoring 67 not out and 40 not out respectively to chase down University’s 219. Gulbis and wicketkeeper-batsman Brayden Stepien, who averaged 43.77 last season and smacked 50 off 36 against University, will also challenge the Cats bowlers. The Cats are underdogs tomorrow based on Carlton’s form but could easily pull off an upset. In Geelong Cricket Association Division 1 Firsts East Belmont, North Geelong, Highton, Leopold and Newtown-Chilwell all scored wins in round five. Isaac Hogan made 101 not out to help Newtown-Chilwell chase down South Barwon’s 168. Tom Mathieson was the pick of the bowlers taking 5/38, as North Geelong bowled out St Joseph’s for 195 to win by 44 runs. North Geelong sits atop the ladder, trailed by Newtown-Chilwell, East Belmont and Lara. In the seconds, Grovedale and East Belmont both picked up wins to remain undefeated. Third-placed Highton defeated last-placed Lara to move a game clear of St Joseph’s, who lost to North Geelong at home, while South Barwon was also victorious. In the thirds, South Barwon remains undefeated after five rounds, with East Belmont, Leopold, Lara and North Geelong also picking up wins.

SPORT Rain fails to stop quality tennis sessions Rain almost ruined tennis events across the Bellarine Peninsula on Sunday, but a “bit of hard work” ensured the courts were ready for play by 1pm. Tennis Geelong president Donna Schoenmaekers thanked organisers for their hard slog getting courts ready, after morning showers, at Drysdale and Barwon Heads for two Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) events. UTR pits players of a similar rating against each other for competitive match play rather than grouping them by age or grade. “Players are able to improve their rating by playing against players of their own standard regardless of age or gender,” Schoenmaekers explained. The system rates players on a scale of 1 to 16.5, including international competitors. For example, World number one Novak Djokovich currently holds a UTR of 15.77. North Geelong indoor tennis arena Centre Court hosted the 1-2.99 band with nine juniors playing the round robin event. The event attracted participants from across Geelong and Melbourne, with a mix of girls

and boys playing each other in the three-set six-game matches. “The kids and parents enjoyed the fact that the draw was ability-based rather than age-based, and the matches were all competitive,” Schoenmaekers said. Drysdale hosted the 3-4.99 player rating range, which brought 17 players from a broad range of ages together. “The older players were giving advice to the younger ones during the games,” Schoenmaekers said. The event hosted four groups of players facing off in three Fast4 sets. Barwon Heads hosted the 5-6.99 band with eight players of varying ages competing in two groups playing three Fast4 sets each match. “The matches were of a high quality, with most of the senior players getting a good taste for singles, which is not a usual feature of Tennis Geelong’s adult competition,” Schoenmaekers said. UTR doubles events will take place at Surf Coast, Ocean Grove, Moolap and Lara tennis clubs this weekend. Details: myutr.com

Olly leaps into AFL draft By Luke Voogt Oliver Henry grew up jostling for the footy against older brother and Geelong Cats defender Jack in the backyard. So it’s little wonder talent specialists rate his chances highly in next Wednesday’s AFL draft. “He’s four years older than me, so he was always a lot bigger and stronger than I was,” the 18-year-said of his brother on Tuesday, ahead of a Melbourne training session. “It taught me about scrapping for the footy. He’s also been a bit of a guide and role model for me.” In an “ideal world” Henry would love to don the blue and white hoops alongside Jack. But that seems unlikely after the Cats sacrificed several draft picks to secure star forward Jeremy Cameron, and Henry is modest about his chances. “I’d be grateful for any opportunity at that level – I can’t really pick and choose,” he said. “I’ve put a lot of hard work in and I’d love to have a shot at my dream.” Henry booted 18 goals in his 15 NAB League games for Geelong Falcons last year, including a five-goal haul. The 187cm utility has a big vertical leap allowing him to play above his height up forward or as an intercept-marking defender. Henry credits St Mary’s junior coach and former Geelong Cat Kane Tenace for “throwing him around” the ground to develop his versatility. “He wanted me to play each position so I could know what an opponent might struggle with,” he said. “When I’m playing forward I’ll know a bit about what a defender won’t want me to do.” Recently-retired Geelong Falcons talent manager Michael Turner described Henry as “one of the better ones” he had seen in 26 years in the role. “He’ll get drafted, 100 per cent,” Turner said. “They’re the sort of players that AFL clubs are after – that are good now and are going to be better in five years. Olly’s much more developed than Jack was at his age – Jack was more involved in athletics [then]. “Every recruiter I talk to ranks him really highly. If I was recruiter I would take him top 10. If Geelong had those three first round draft picks, they would be taking Olly.” Turner also praised on-baller Tanner Bruhn, who has made the Draft Combine list alongside fellow Falcons Noah Gribble, Henry Walsh, Blake Reid, Cameron Fleeton, Charlie Ham and Charlie Lazzaro. They will face heightened competition with fewer spots up for grabs due to COVID-19. 34 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 4 December, 2020

Portarlington the top spot for snapper

The fishing this week is continuing to provide anglers with heaps of options both on land and boat with plenty of fish in all parts. The bay is still hosting the majority of the fishing traffic, with most fishos having one species in mind – snapper! Portarlington is still the number one location, and for good reason, as the fish just seem to be everywhere with the channel holding the best numbers. Tide changes and, of course, first and last light have definitely been the most productive times to fish. Out the front of Clifton Springs boat ramp has also been fishing very well for snapper and there seems to be a few good schools of fish holding there, offering the perfect area to fish with limited time. Alcoa Pier is holding fantastic numbers of salmon and small pinkie snapper at the moment, casting soft plastics into the structure has proved very effective and is providing anglers plenty of fun, bait and food, all in the one location. King George whiting have responded well after a few blowy days allowing the water to dirty up, causing them to go into a feeding frenzy. St Leonards and Queenscliff have definitely been two standout locations, with Queenscliff holding the bigger fish. The Queenscliff cut is still on fire for the anglers casting soft plastics in the channel with silver trevally, pinkie snapper and salmon all in great numbers and size. The Queenscliff bight has still got some fantastic squid fishing on offer for anglers fishing in a boat and off land. Land-based fishos are still finding Bell Reef the best location to wade out, while boat-based anglers are finding squid right through the area. The red hot snapper bite off Barwon Heads is showing no sign of slowing down with some fantastic reports still coming through. Drifting anywhere between 25 to 60 metres is holding fantastic numbers with fish up to 5kg becoming quite common at the moment. Barwon River is still fishing well for redfin and small estuary perch, with still a few yellowbelly being caught among them. Fyansford and Queens Park are proving to be great locations and once again small hard body lures or soft plastics with jig spinners working best for all species.
