Tree cheers to You Yangs
(Louisa Jones) 224110_24
Aspiring Geelong West entrepreneur Alistair Bullock is saying “cheers!” to the You Yangs by planting a tree for every cocktail box he sells. The 23-year-old grew up in Lara and his mum is “heavily involved” in Serendip Sanctuary, he explained. “We would always do tree planting when I was younger,” he said. “I grew up looking at the You Yangs – it’s just a really nice place. It’s exciting to use my small business to do some good towards it.” Alistair worked as a bartender on ‘gap year’ trips to Queenstown (NZ) and Byron Bay, and has channelled that experience and weeks of research during lockdown into his cocktail boxes. His boxes feature all Australian ingredients and instructions for revellers to mix up classics and newer cocktails, such as cosmopolitans and ginger yuzus. Alistair plans to plant his first batch of trees next May for Parks Victoria. “They’ll tell me which trees need to be planted for which area and I’ll go plant them,” he said. Locals dig deep in 2020 Geelong donors have opened their hearts and wallets in 2020 despite COVID-19, raising more than $365,000 for six of the city’s top GoFundMe campaigns. Geelong’s top campaign raised more than $140,000 for a Highton family with two terminally-ill children, who have since bought a wheelchair-compatible car and are planning modifications to their home. “We’re still completely shocked by it,” the children’s mother Kelly McElligott said. In May, the Independent revealed the campaign for terminally-ill children Maggie and Billy had raised $70,000 in just 24 hours. Maggie was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease in April 2019, while Billy was diagnosed with the rare fatal genetic disorder this February.

The incurable disease destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing children to slowly lose their ability to walk and talk, and eventually results in seizures. Younger sister Alice does not have the condition and is already trying to help her older siblings, according to Kelly. She described the generosity of so many people she had never met as “very special”. “I think people thought, ‘I would hate for my child to be diagnosed with a terminal illness’ and they just wanted to do what they could,” she said. “I guess its people’s worst nightmare – and we’re living it.” The family bought a Kia Karnival in June but had to wait until last week to put it in for modifications. Only two NDIS providers do the modifications and COVID-19 had further delayed them, Kelly explained.

The family is also looking to install a lift in their home and plan to put some money aside for Maggie’s and Billy’s funerals. But for now Kelly and husband Rory are making the most of every day with their “beautiful kids”. Geelong donors gave generously to the family of loving father Jackson Burke, who died of a rare viral infection, Corey Boyle, who is fighting stage four bowel cancer and Fleur Gollan, who has a crippling genetic disorder. Locals also donated in support of former Geelong woman Abbey Forrest and her family, killed in an alleged arson attack on their Point Cook home this month, and Manifold Heights prep student Nolan Hiotakis’s cancer battle. “The fact that people are so willing to help over so many different campaigns – during hard times for everybody – just amazes me,” Kelly said.

Fight for Drysdale ‘character’ By Luke Voogt Campaigners opposing a controversial 550-house estate in Drysdale they believe will “kill” the town’s rural character are considering legal action after council rubber stamped the plans. Drysdale Clifton Springs Curlewis Association is set to meet online today to discuss its next steps following the approval. “We’re extremely disappointed,” association president Mercedes Drummond said. Several committee members suggested
seeking legal advice and fighting the decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), she said. “We have to investigate how worthwhile [going to VCAT] would be.” The association has also appealed to Bellarine MP Lisa Neville and Planning Minister Richard Wynne to intervene, according to Mrs Drummond. Council on Tuesday night adopted an amendment to rezone 28 ‘rural living’ properties on either side of Central Road, Drysdale, to support the proposed estate.
Ample Investments Group, which plans to redevelop the land and requested the amendment, owns eight of the properties. Mayor Stephanie Asher and deputy mayor Trent Sullivan – both Bellarine councillors – voted against the amendment after an independent panel supported the plans with minor changes. Councillor Anthony Aitken also voted against the plans while Bellarine ward councillor Jim Mason abstained from voting. Council received 71 public submissions on the proposal, with 64 objections including 21
opposing a proposed road now scrapped from the plans. The independent panel received a further five late submissions, with four in favour. Mrs Drummond warned the development threatened Drysdale’s rural character. Strategic planning portfolio chair Kylie Grzybek acknowledged the large amount of community feedback but stated council was satisfied with the panel’s recommendations. “It’s the right time for this amendment, as the development will assist in easing pressure on housing supply on the Bellarine Peninsula,” Cr Grzybek said.

Santa flies in for Geelong Mums Christmas efforts. “To have that out at Corio Village to create some awareness for us is fantastic,” Kelly said. “Any financial donations – particularly at this time of year – go a long way towards cots, prams, car seats and other essentials for families in need.” According to Geelong Mums, 42 per cent of the families they support suffered negative effects from COVID-19 including homelessness, loss of income and domestic violence. “We’re still preparing for an avalanche of needs that are coming as we expect the effects of COVID-19 to continue long into next year,”
Kelly said. Geelong Mums had to close its doors to some volunteers and item donations for extended periods in 2020, due to the pandemic. “But we didn’t close for a day in terms of our distributions,” Kelly said. According to Geelong Mums, as little as $56 will provide a clothing bundle for a baby or child with more than 100 items to last them a year. Corio Village’s festive activities will run daily until Christmas Eve. Details: coriovillage.com. au. Luke Voogt

A former Ocean Grove doctor who faces a string of sexual misconduct charges, has been suspended from practising for a second time. Shafiul Milky, 56, faced Geelong Magistrates Court charged with 15 offences in November and has now had his registration suspended by the Medical Board of Australia. The allegations stem from the time Dr Milky worked at Bellarine Peninsula Family Medical Practice in Ocean Grove. Dr Milky had been seeing patients at Colac Medical Centre and Colac Central Medical Centre and the Mount Clear Medical Centre, near Ballarat. Dr Milky has been charged with multiple offences including rape that have alleged to have occurred between September 2012 and February 2019. He was suspended by the Medical Board of Australia in 2019, but it was reinstated, with conditions, by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) two months later after he appealed due to financial hardship. He was also banned from having any contact with female patients. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency updated Dr Milky’s registration status this week to “suspended”. Dr Milky has denied all allegations.

FRIDAY FEATURE
Love will find a way Cancellations, flesh-eating ulcers and a difficult dressmaker were just some of the curveballs 2020 threw at Rachelle Dempsey and her wedding plans. But love conquered all, she tells Luke Voogt, as business begins to boom again for Geelong celebrants.
R
achelle Dempsey had planned to marry in front of friends and family on December 5 ever since now-husband Ted Robinson proposed to her as they waited in a restaurant line. “Ted said to me, ‘so, we are going to be married one day, right?’” the new Mount Duneed local remembered with amusement. “I was like, ‘you can’t seriously be proposing to me while we’re waiting for a table’.” But then COVID-19 hit in March, and guest restrictions turned out to be the least of Rachelle’s worries during a turbulent 2020. The first obstacle came after she paid a dressmaker a deposit for her bridal dress. “I couldn’t go for the fitting,” she said. “The designer wasn’t super happy about refunding the deposit.” They instead sent her a sample dress, which was the incorrect size, Rachelle said. She tried to organise an alternative fitting date multiple times but the dressmaker refused, taking the deposit and leaving her the dress to sell, she said. Then in September, 10 weeks out from the wedding, Rachelle was diagnosed with a Bairnsdale ulcer on her left thigh. “I was kind of freaking out,” she said. “If you go on the internet and search Bairnsdale ulcer, it doesn’t look pleasant.” Initially a doctor thought the flesh-eating ulcer was a spider bite, but when treatment failed, her regular GP – a different doctor – sent off tests. “Pathology actually lost the swab!” Rachelle said. Eventually “amazing” infectious disease specialists made sure she got the treatment she needed. Six weeks out from the wedding, in October, the venue she had booked called to cancel. Finally, she had some luck when three weeks later Pearls and Roses Bridal in Newtown came to the rescue. “The dressmaker – Karen – was awesome,” she said. But about the same time her hairdresser and makeup artist told her they had double-booked her wedding date. “So I had to find a different makeup artist and hairdresser within the next couple of days,” Rachelle said. Just a fortnight out, Rachelle underwent surgery on her leg and was off her feet for about a week. “I had just one week where I could put things together,” she said. Luckily, her husband secured Lorne Hotel, which was undergoing renovations at the time. The owners adapted the venue for the couple’s reception mid-renovation, Rachelle explained. “We were really lucky to have that because it’s not a function space,” she said.

“We’ll be the only couple to have a wedding there.” Initially they had planned the ceremony in her sister’s backyard, but a forecast of thunderstorms and strong winds meant the couple had to revise that last minute too. Celebrant and family availabilities limited their options to Geelong, but they managed to secure The Warehouse within two days. “They were amazing – they were so good to deal with,” Rachelle said. “When everything started to fall apart I was pretty anxious. But when it all finally started to come together, I thought maybe it was meant to happen this way.” The venue change allowed them to have an extra five guests under COVID-19 restrictions, and a larger reception in Lorne. “We had always hoped to have 40 or 50 at the reception, so it worked out perfectly,” Rachelle

said. “I thought it might be less but we never thought of cancelling it – we were going to forge ahead anyway.” Most importantly to Rachelle, the couple were able to share their love with friends and family. “If you’re worried about every minor detail you’re missing the point,” she said. “It was always about us being together and sharing it with family – that was what kept us calm.” While Rachelle was able to tie the knot in 2020, Geelong celebrants are being flooded with inquiries for 2021, according to the woman who married her. “Next year is going to be huge. It’s looking crazy,” said Anita Jenkins, who is also part of Geelong Celebrant Collective. “We’ve had a massive boom. “We’ve got all the postponed weddings from this year and we’ve got those weddings that would have happened in 2021 anyway.
Check them out!
“It’s so exciting because I love what I do with such a passion, it’s the best job in the world.” The boom would be a welcome reprieve for the industry after a devastating 2020 – particularly for celebrants specialising in larger ceremonies, Anita said. “One of the collective had a wedding in March and she’s only just had her next wedding last weekend – and she’s one of the best celebrants in Geelong.” Anita and many other local celebrants performed smaller weddings during COVID-19, and she expects the trend to continue after the pandemic. “I called them my iso weddings,” she said. “They’re so beautiful because they’re just about the couple and not everybody else. “Even going into next year a lot of us have got those smaller ceremonies booked. I think [COVID-19] has reset people’s thinking.”

Charges over alleged cruelty By Luke Voogt Former Geelong businessman Kon Petropoulos and wife Liudmila Petropoulos face animal cruelty charges after RSPCA investigators seized nine kittens in raids at their Ballarat property. In July, Victoria’s Major Investigations Team executed two warrants at the property after receiving several tip-offs following a public appeal for information. The reports claimed the couple was breaching a court-ordered ban by allegedly continuing to operate an illegal domestic animal-rearing business.
Investigators on Tuesday charged both Mr and Mrs Petropoulos with multiple offences under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The charges include confining an animal in a manner causing or likely to cause unreasonable pain or suffering, and failing to provide veterinary or appropriate attention. Investigators also charged Mr and Mrs Petropoulos for allegedly breaching a court order banning them from selling animals. Mr Petropoulos faces additional charges under the Domestic Animals Act including failure to comply with the mandatory code of practice, selling of animals in a public place and offences relating to the advertising of
animals for sale. Major Investigations Team leader Lisa Calleja said public information was crucial in RSPCA investigations into possible animal cruelty. “We rely on public informants to provide tip-offs and information which legally enables us to investigate cases like these. With the information we received from the public we were able to execute warrants, seize nine kittens and ultimately lay these new charges.” Ms Calleja urged anyone who suspected animal cruelty or the illegal selling of animals to phone 9224 2222 or lodge a report online at www.rspcavic.org/services/tip-off.

Festive cheer on the bay An impromptu Geelong Carousel concert brought Christmas cheer to the waterfront on Monday night despite the cancellation of live carols this year. Piano Bar owner Andy Pobjoy was thrilled to get into festive spirit in the live and live-streamed show. “We had a little crowd out the back,” he said. “It was so lovely with the doors open – it formed a bit of a stage – and it was such a beautiful backdrop. “And there’s always a bit of buzz around Geelong’s floating Christmas tree. It certainly created that Christmas feeling.” About 60 or 70 people stopped to watch during the two-and-a-half-hour show, according to Andy. “We didn’t promote it because obviously we didn’t want to draw a crowd,” he said.
“I sort of came up with the idea and contacted Central Geelong Marketing saying, ‘we’re thinking of crashing the waterfront’. “Helen from Central Geelong Marketing said, ‘why don’t you perform in the carousel instead?’” Local and international viewers tuned into the show online, which Andy reckoned was Piano Bar’s 160th live stream for the year. “We took requests over the comments,” he said. “We had one woman from the US asking, ‘where are you? Hawaii?’” Andy praised council, and local businesses and performers, for “throwing around ideas” and “making them happen” during COVID-19. “The city has really tried to embrace this new outdoor way of doing things,” he said. Leopold resident and Christmas sleuth Jenni Harper has become the first winner in Geelong council’s festive treasure hunt. Jenni was “thrilled” to take home a hamper from Darriwill Farm, Highton, after cracking the code in the Greater Geelong Christmas Adventure. “The prize hamper … is amazing and I can’t wait to get home and see what other goodies it contains,” she said on Tuesday. “When this new activity launched, I had a great time looking at the various locations in the interactive map. Then, we jumped in the car and went and visited a number of locations near us to find the clues.” Jenni is set for the festive season with her hamper containing a Christmas pudding,
chocolates, yoyo biscuits, jams and relishes, wafers, liquorice, coconut ice and more. The items come predominantly from greater Geelong, showcasing the region’s culinary variety. Locals still have time to crack the code and win one of the three hampers remaining (as of Tuesday) in the Greater Geelong Christmas Adventure. The scavenger hunt includes 24 locations featuring Christmas trees, giant baubles and postcards, and chalk wall art with clues for a popular Christmas phrase. Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher congratulated Jenni and encouraged locals to join the hunt in the new feature of Geelong council’s festive celebrations. Details: geelongaustralia.com.au/christmas

Arts redevelopment begins early By Luke Voogt A $128 million redevelopment of Geelong Arts Centre’s Little Malop Street building has begun a month early, state government has announced. “The [redevelopment] has commenced ahead of schedule, bringing immediate jobs and opportunities to Geelong and setting the city up for economic recovery and success,” Creative Industries Minister Danny Pearson said. The closure of the site recently allowed establishment works and the stripping of
internal fittings and finishes in some parts of the building to begin last month. Workers also completed the demolition of the site’s old Barwon Health building in November, as scheduled. Managing contractor Lendlease has committed to a “Geelong first” policy that prioritises investment in local businesses for the project. The contractor has awarded eight tender packages to Geelong businesses employing 44 people so far. Eight other Victorian companies involved with the project have committed to
employ Geelong residents and engage with local suppliers. Ten suppliers and subcontractors have also committed to hiring at least one apprentice, according to Geelong Arts Centre. State government expects early works to be complete in mid-2021 with project completion scheduled for late 2023. “When complete this project will offer new creative spaces, new services and greater accessibility to top-quality experiences for all ages,” Mr Pearson said. Overall, the redevelopment will boost
the local economy by generating more than 600 jobs during construction, according to government. Currently, hoardings and safe access routes are in place around the site, with workers aiming to minimise disruption to nearby businesses. Through this process the project team has donated more than 15 tonnes of salvaged items and materials to local community organisations. “Through adopting sustainable practices, the project is also befitting our community more broadly,” Geelong MP Christine Couzens said.
Pups in market for home Adorable pups Oatmeal and Cody are heading down the highway to Geelong tomorrow in their search for a ‘fur-ever’ home. At just nine-weeks-old, border collie-kelpie cross Oatmeal is already full of beans and needs an active family to keep up with his quick mind and busy body. Ten-month-old terrier blend Cody loves other dogs but is a little timid meeting new people. He is looking for a family who will take him on plenty of adventures and allow him inside for cuddles. The cute pair, and their canine comrades, will meet and greet locals in a combined market and pet adoption drive at Geelong Conference Centre tomorrow.
OPEN AS CHRISTM DAY 9AM-9PM
The event, hosted in collaboration with Piccadilly Market, will feature dozens of Geelong businesses selling last-minute Christmas gifts for loved ones and furry friends alike. Locals can find wreath-making workshops, graphic designers, antique elixirs and mixers, accessories, ceramics, towels, children’s and baby’s products and more among the stalls at Eastern Park. Coffee and drinks will also be available, along with artisan pooch treats for dog-owners or the lucky attendees who meet a new furry friend in time for Christmas. Pets Haven, based in Woodend, will bring their friendly orphaned and homeless animals down to Geelong for the market to find them new loving homes. Details: www.eventbrite.com.au. Luke Voogt

This is the City's Coronavirus support page, which includes information about the status of events, facilities and City services across the region. A MESSAGE FROM CR STEPHANIE ASHER, MAYOR With just a week until Christmas, I’ve been left wondering how it’s crept up on us just as life is starting to feel almost ‘normal’ again. It’s fantastic to see community members supporting local businesses as they tick off their festive to-do lists. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling some unease as international flights return to Victoria and as a result, positive COVID-19
cases in quarantine after more than a month of donuts. With Greater Geelong’s close proximity to Melbourne, the situation highlights the importance of contact tracing. Scanning QR codes every time we go to a café, restaurant or store has almost become second nature and it’s impressive how quickly business has adapted. A big thanks to everyone embracing these
procedures and doing their bit. The City’s Christmas program is looking a little different this year, but there’s still plenty to enjoy.
For info on the full program, head to www.geelongaustralia.com.au/christmas
The Floating Christmas Tree light show has returned and is also streaming online, City Hall is transformed by festive projections, 24 locations have come to life as part of the Greater Geelong Christmas Adventure and there are Christmas Augmented Reality characters to discover thanks to Central Geelong Marketing.

Roads, projects advance By Luke Voogt Work on nine “key” Geelong road and infrastructure upgrades totalling $2.18 million will soon begin following a funding agreement between federal government and council. Council received the funds as part of federal government’s $500 million Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, aimed at fast-tracking Australia’s economic recovery from COVID-19. “The list contains a good spread of projects across the region and each will significantly benefit the local community once finished,” Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said. “In addition they’ll all create local jobs during construction and generate work for local suppliers.” The money will fund “priority” upgrades, including a widening of Reserve Road, Charlemont, which Independent readers have described as being “in terrible condition”. Council will put $500,000 towards pavement reconstruction, stabilisation and widening between Barwarre and Barwon Heads roads, to improve safety and cater to increased traffic. Another $500,000 will fund a new 1.4km shared bike-pedestrian path between Barrabool and Orana roads using Barwon Water reserve. Landy Field will receive $200,000 for upgrades to facilities including changerooms, hot water systems and its first aid room. A crackdown on hoons at Limeburners Point carpark, including security cameras and improved lighting, will cost $88,504. Pavement rehabilitation and road projects, using some recycled materials, will start at Christies Road, Leopold, and Walkers Road, Lara, costing $350,000 and $150,000 respectively. Council will spend another $180,000

completing a missing 560-metre footpath link on Fellmongers Road between Boundary Road and Cosgrove Street. Council also plans to spend $15,000 on its Lara Traffic Management Plan identifying 10 short-term priority actions including truck route revisions, intersection amendments and speed changes. Robbs Road, Moorabool, will also receive a $200,000 revamp.
Geelong-based senator Sarah Henderson said the projects would create jobs and improve liveability in Geelong while boosting the city’s post-COVID recovery. She welcomed the “key road upgrades” and “a very substantial $200,000” to improve Landy Field. “As someone who competed at Landy Field as a child, I know first-hand what a wonderful asset this is for … our community,” she said.
Early lifeline for refinery A “lifeline” for Geelong’s oil refinery and its 700 employees will start on January 1, federal government has announced. Energy Minister Angus Taylor and local senator Sarah Henderson on Monday announced a one cent per litre subsidy for Australia’s refineries, including Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery. “After such a difficult year, this is a real lifeline for one of Geelong’s most significant employers,” Senator Henderson said. Under the “accelerated” production payment, valued at $83.5 million over six months, Australia’s major oil refineries will receive one cent in taxpayer funding per litre of petrol, diesel and jet fuel. Federal government initially announced a fuel security package of 1.15 cents per litre for July 1, 2021, but has brought forward the one cent production payment component. Government plans to introduce a long-term market mechanism by July 1 but is finalising the details. Monday’s announcement comes amid warnings from Viva that its Geelong refinery, which provides about 50 per cent of Victoria’s liquid fuel needs, faced “full shutdown” without assistance. Corio MP and deputy Opposition leader Richard Marles welcomed the measure but described it as overdue. “The bringing forward of this measure is a concession that the government did too little for too long,” he said.

From the shipyards of Adelaide and Papua New Guinea to a Geelong charter for fishers with disabilities, boating has long been part of Charles Neal’s life. He speaks to Luke Voogt about several decades on the water. Tell us about you… I was born in East Gippsland, I’m 78 and I live in East Geelong. My wife Jan and I have been married for 26 years. Between us, we have five children and eight grandchildren. I started my apprenticeship at age 15 as a shipwright and boat builder at East Gippsland Lakes. I moved from Gippsland to Adelaide and continued boat building. Then, an accident forced me to change direction. I injured my back in a demonstration row after winning the state championships in 1965. That was a bit embarrassing, really – I ended up not being able to walk for quite a few months. Renowned surgeon Sir Denis Paterson performed an operation on me and it took me about five months to learn to walk again. After the operation I moved to Papua New Guinea as a shipwright teacher-instructor at Napa Napa. I moved back to South Australia to join a poultry food company and they sent me to Marcus Oldham College in Geelong to study pigs and ducks. After several years in Horsham, I came to Geelong in 1987. How did Geelong Fishing Charters begin? People with disabilities had never been catered for with fishing charters and I thought that was wrong. So I set about building a boat to do just that. I built Corio Princess and placed an ad in the Independent in 2013. The satisfaction of seeing people, particularly in a wheelchair, catching a fish for the first time … is something that you just can’t explain. Corio Princess is the only Australian charter boat I’m aware of that has a disabled toilet. I
have macular degeneration, which has caused my eyesight to gradually worsen over the past 25 years. I just got back from surgery for my eyes today. I’m studying that. I enjoy cooking – I probably do more cooking than gardening to be honest. I don’t eat out much – I can’t read a menu!

Carter departs Cats after decade By Luke Voogt Geelong Football Club president Colin Carter will retire from the role at the club’s annual general meeting on January 28, 2021, he has announced. Carter, who has served as president for a decade, thanked Geelong Cats fans for keeping their club alive and well during COVID-19. “This year our members and philanthropic donors stood behind the club in a period where the impact of COVID could have set us back a decade,” he said. “What they have done for the club was wonderful. Stick with us, we are still
striving to enjoy the ultimate success again.” Carter presided over the club during its 2011 premiership, following the departure of coach Mark Thompson and then arguably the best player in the game, Gary Ablett. The club won 69 per cent of games and played in finals nine times during Carter’s time. He also presided over more than $300 million of redevelopments and funding agreements for Kardinia Park, including the upcoming stage 5 redevelopment, membership growth of 25,000 and the creation of its AFLW team. Geelong Cats recently sold their last gaming venue and raised nearly $20 million in
philanthropic support in the past five years of Carter’s tenure. “It’s easy to be proud of an organisation that has so many great people and that has been so successful,” he said. Carter’s involvement in the football industry began in 1985 as a consultant to the then VFL commission. From 1988 to 1993 Carter served as a Geelong Football Club director before joining the AFL commission. He retired as an AFL commissioner and re-joined the Cats’ board in 2008. Craig Drummond, a member of Cats’ board since 2011, will take over the presidency.

Rise to the challenge A Manifold Heights gym is raising funds for a domestic violence prevention charity inundated with calls for help during COVID-19. Gym owner and Mount Duneed father-of-two Joel Dean has joined his parent company 9Round’s campaign to raise $10,000 for RizeUp by donating up to $15 for everyone who signs up to its four-week challenge. “It’s a great foundation,” Joel said. “[Domestic violence has] definitely risen with COVID and people being in lockdown.” According to RizeUp, COVID-19 has heightened the threat of domestic violence for many at-risk Australians, due to loss of income, working from home, home-schooling and disconnect from social networks. The not-for-profit has experienced a 20 per cent increase in calls during the pandemic. As well as supporting a good cause and
reducing the stigma of reporting domestic violence, Joel hoped to sign up some new members through the initiative too. “If you get them in and they love it, they want to stay,” he said. The four-week challenge includes meal plans, exercises and challenges designed for each individual participant. “Everyone’s different. We’ll ask, ‘what are your goals?’ and tailor that to their needs,” Joel said. Joel spoke to the Independent in late October about his relief as eased restrictions allowed gyms to reopen. “If you own a gym, you want to care about your members,” he said. “You’ve got members that rely on you for an outlet.” Details: 9round.com.au Luke Voogt

Taylor prepares for national tour By Luke Voogt To say Taylor Henderson is “excited” about his upcoming tour is an “understatement”, according to the multi-platinum Geelong singer-songwriter. “I was so prepared for this year,” the 27-year-old told the Independent. “We were on a roll four weeks in and then shows started getting postponed. “A week goes by and absolutely everything’s cancelled for the whole year. I was actually laughing like, ‘is this really happening?’ “At the start you’re thinking, ‘what do I do’, then you’re just enjoying it, and then it gets to the point where you’re looking at the calendar and thinking, ‘this isn’t good’. “I don’t like sitting comfortably for long.” With his plans for an extremely busy 2020 on the road shattered by COVID-19, Henderson immersed himself in song-writing, recording and producing, penning “at least 30 songs”. “You’re balanced between uncertainty, comfort and frustration – it’s a perfect time to write,” he said. “At the start of the year I was telling my manager, ‘I’ve got no time to record’. Now I’m saying, ‘please get me on the road because all I’ve been doing is recording and writing!’” While Henderson is set to do just that early next year, first he will hold a live stream event tonight after releasing two new covers today. Henderson will play his own versions of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Hallelujah, and other hits, in an intimate, virtual performance for fans. “We’ve shot some amazing video clips for them too,” he said. “I kept singing [Hallelujah], and I sent it to dad and he said, ‘you should just release it.’ So I did!”
Taylor Henderson is getting ready for a national tour next year. (Supplied)
The show, beginning at 8pm, will be Henderson’s second time performing through online platform Bigo Live. According to Bigo, the platform has 1.3 million Australian and New Zealand users and 400 million worldwide. The platform has featured other Australian music stars including Stan Walker, Dami Im, Beau Monga and Timomatic. “It’s such a thrill to be able to put on a second show after the success of the first one,”
Henderson said. “My team and I had the best experience working with Bigo.” Henderson will travel to Melbourne for the show in a purpose-built room in the home of friend and producer Nick Marris. “The first time testing it is in front of a live audience … so I can’t wait,” he laughed. “Nick always makes everything sound good, so he’ll make it sound nice and crisp.” A former contestant on The X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent, Henderson rose to fame
with hits such as Borrow My Heart and Already Gone. The livestream gig is a warm-up for his 2021 national tour, which promoters say will be the next stage of his evolution. And in a special treat for fans, Henderson will open up the floor in an online question and answer session during the show. “Feel free to fire any questions at me and I’ll answer them,” he said. Back to Back on the road for 2021 By Luke Voogt Street performance – but not as you know it – is set to hit Adelaide when Geelong’s Back to Back Theatre returns to touring in March 2021. The company plans to showcase its play, small metal objects, at Adelaide Fringe Festival from March 2 to 8. “The ensemble is excited to be working again,” Back to Back executive director Tim Stitz said. Premiering in 2005, small metal objects was last presented to Australian audiences more than 10 years ago, and this 2021 Adelaide season sees it return to the city for the first time since 2006. “We relish the opportunity to share the work with Australian audiences, old and new, once again.” The play features Geelong actors and co-writers Simon Laherty and Sonia Teuben in star roles. The show unfolds amid pedestrian traffic against the backdrop of a city. On a raised seating bank with individual sets of headphones, the audience is wired into an intensely personal drama being played out somewhere in the crowd. Gary and Steve are the kind of men who normally escape notice. But here they play an inadvertent but pivotal role in the night of two ambitious executives they’ve arranged to meet for a transaction. As the intimacy of their situation develops, small metal objects becomes a sly and luminous depiction of everyday issues most take for granted. The play explores how respect is withheld from outsiders – the disabled or unemployed – who society sometimes deems unproductive.

“Here the company considers how a person’s worth in society is defined by their productivity,” Stitz said. “It’s a theme very familiar to these performers and even timelier in 2021 than it was at its premiere in 2005. “Set against the shifting backdrop of a city weighed down by economic uncertainty, the

FEATURING ... SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
Christmas school holidays are coming and Ashlie Aparicio, manager of Rollerway Skate Centre, agrees it’s great to see kids getting out and active again. As she puts it, what could be healthier and more fun than roller skating or rollerblading? “Things do go around in cycles and we’re so happy that roller skating is all the rage again,” Ashlie says, “but this time adults as well as kids are really getting into it. “After months of lockdowns, and a few renovations to fill the downtimes, it’s so heart-warming to see families skating together again, and all those birthday parties happening. It was just as awesome to see a lady celebrating her 50th here the other day, too. “The skate centre is also flat out with Christmas sales, with roller skates and rollerblades selling in other places like never before, we are told.” Ashlie, who grew up playing hockey at Rollerway and is the fourth-generation manager at the longstanding family business, reckons roller skating is perfect for all ages. “Anyone can have a go,” she says. “And there’s nothing like seeing kids – who can barely lace up their skates – learn to skate in a matter of minutes. “The rink has music, bright lights, high-quality rental skates and an amazing atmosphere. Everyone seems to love it and it’s quite special to see grandparents skating with their grandchildren and tiny tots having a go. “We’re now seeing kids who learnt to skate here bring their own kids in. It’s such a great family activity and an awesome way to entertain teens as well.” Ashlie invites everyone to get their skates on and into the Christmas spirit – and get into some seriously family-friendly fun. NOTE: Rollerway has extra skating from December 19 through to January 27. Tickets are available online or at the door.

FEATURING ... SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
Experience the obsession Parents all over the country are gearing up for the school holidays, perhaps wondering how to keep primary school-aged children entertained over the long haul. The Rock Adventure Centre in Newtown offers an exciting day (or days) out, where parents can relax over a coffee while kids are supervised. The centre, launched in 2001, has climbing walls up to 12 metres high, with more than 100 climbs to test every level. Kids as young as five are able to tackle a wall, with a belayer (the person who holds the rope to keep climbers safe) required to be at least 13 years old. But the primary school-aged kids are supervised in sessions running from 2-4pm each Tuesday and Thursday during the holidays. They can experience the thrill of climbing, while the grown-ups kick back. Sounds good, yes? Just make sure a booking is made. Older kids and adults can get in on the fun, too, with instructors always available to show beginners the ropes. There are challenges enough for every ability and experience level – and the centre is open every day. It’s a fab experience for the entire family who can get into “Geelong’s vertical obsession”. During the school term, the centre has a Climb-It Club for primary schoolers. This offers two sessions of structured and supervised climbing and training each week, with an end-of-term outdoor trip to test out their skills on the local cliffs.
• Participants under 18 years old must have a parent sign an agreement before climbing. • The Rock instructors take participants through a safety instruction session. • All rock climbing equipment is available for rent, including harnesses. • Wear tracksuit pants and t-shirt, or anything that allows free movement. Running shoes (with good sole grip) are adequate for kids and beginners. • Except for above mentioned supervised sessions, the centre does not provide belayers.

FEATURING ... AUTO
TRIO OF INDEPENDENTLY OWNED WORKSHOPS SPECIALISING IN ALL EUROPEAN BRANDS COVID SAFE CONTACTLESS SERVICE
Brett and Rachel Turley. (Supplied)
We are open and operating fully through all stages of restrictions
A leading independent workshop in Geelong, BJT Automotive has established a solid reputation as a reliable and thorough workshop with exceptional customer service. Owner Brett Turley says the high standards they pride themselves on mean they are an excellent alternative to dealership servicing. “We are renowned for our fussiness and attention to detail, and that’s exactly how we like it,” he says. “To ensure our mechanical services are cutting edge and up to date we are constantly refreshing and improving our mechanics’ skills and knowledge.” Personalised service is front and centre at BJT Automotive as well. Brett and his team offer a loan car and courtesy car service and also like to get an understanding of each customer and their car. “Our mechanics take note and listen. They’re thorough and keep extensive records of each service. This means we’re aware of wear, tear
and potential issues. “And regular log book servicing results in a better sale price when it comes time to sell.” Brett says that prices are very competitive, and customers can trust that any parts used will always maintain their new car warranties. He also has some advice for anyone who’s about to buy or sell a car. “We encourage them to talk to us first. We are VicRoads roadworthy testers, able to issue roadworthy certificates, and offer comprehensive pre-purchase car inspections.” As well as tyre fitting, the workshop carries out a range of mechanical services, with Holden, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Suzuki covered. BJT Automotive, 8 Maxwell Avenue, Belmont. Opens 8am-5.30pm MondayFriday. Inquiries: 5244 3337 or www.bjtautomotive.com.au

Geelong scores first win By Luke Voogt Geelong has won its first match of the season thanks to a maiden Premier Cricket century by Angus Boyd and a four-wicket haul by all-rounder Hayden Butterworth. Butterworth started poorly with the bat, managing just 6 after the Cats won the toss against Greenvale Kangaroos. The Cats lost their first three wickets for 50 and looked in trouble. But Boyd, 22, led a comeback scoring 100 off just 74 balls, mounting a 164-run fourth wicket partnership with fellow young gun Thomas Jackson (67). Forty-eight of Boyd’s runs came off (eight) sixes in his big-hitting innings. It’s the first time he has reached triple figures in two seasons in Geelong Cricket Club’s first XI. The Cats finished with 6/252 and Butterworth soon made up for his batting
by dismissing openers Haseeb Qureshi and Joshua Trembearth cheaply. Only former Prahran and Geelong skipper Matthew Harrison managed any meaningful resistance, fighting for 35 runs off 65 balls. Butterworth finished with 4/19 as the Cats bowled the Kangaroos out for just 114 to record a 138-run win. Geelong returns home this Saturday to take on last season’s minor premiers Melbourne University. University is coming off an eight-wicket thrashing of Essendon after its bowlers demolished the Bombers for just 97. The side defeated Footscray in a rain-affected match the previous weekend, bowling the Bulldogs out for 137. But with University yet to post a big total this season, the Cats will have a chance if their batsmen can withstand University’s in-form bowlers.
In the Geelong Cricket Association division one firsts, Newtown & Chilwell opener Isaac Hogan recorded his second century of the season. But his 104 runs were not enough to get Newtown & Chilwell over the line, with Two Blues going down in a thriller to Murgheboluc. The Blues (6/222) fell two runs short despite having more wickets in hand than Murgheboluc (8/224) after their 50 overs. Lara, St Joseph’s, North Geelong and East Belmont also recorded wins. North Geelong sits atop the ladder, followed by Lara, Newtown & Chilwell and St Joseph’s. In the seconds, North Geelong, East Belmont, Lara, Grovedale and Murgheboluc scored wins. Grovedale remains undefeated after eight rounds, with East Belmont, Highton and South Barwon rounding out the top four. In the thirds, Lara, Grovedale, North Geelong, East Belmont and Newtown & Chilwell were victorious.

Local grommets dominate Local juniors took out six of seven age divisions at the Surfer Groms Comp, which ended at Jan Juc on Sunday. Barwon Heads’ Harry Farrer won the under 14 boys, posting a combined heat total of 13.67 in small waves. “It was tricky,” he said. “I managed to get a couple out there. I’m just stoked to win.” Hot on Farrer’s tail was fellow Barwon Heads local Taj McPhee, the son of former Essendon Bombers player Adam. McPhee ripped into a couple of nice rights, but fell short with a combined heat total of 12.50. The groms showed their creativity in two-foot easterly swell at Jan Juc after organisers moved the tournament on day two from its initial location in Torquay, due to a lack of waves. Mornington Peninsula’s Sara Hickson was the only non-local to win, taking out the under 14 girls by just .16 of a point. Hickson posted a 7.33 ride on her way to a heat total of 11.50. Jan Juc’s Isla Huppatz beat Hickson’s best individual ride with a 7.77 wave, but was unable to find a second score of 3.74 or more to snatch the lead, finishing on 11.34. Isla’s younger sister Anna Huppatz won the under 12s, triumphing over Lillian Bassed by almost three points with a heat total of 11.87. Anna looks set to follow in the footsteps of Isla, and eldest sister Mia, who both feature regularly on the podium in junior events. Armstrong Creek under 10 surfer Kai Coleman posted a perfect 10 in his first round heat, winning the competition’s Star Performer Award for the ride. 34 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 18 December, 2020

In the final he smashed the competition with a heat total of 13.84, more than eight points ahead of second-placed Angus Kennedy. Jarvis Barrow won the under 12 boys with a heat total of 12.16, while fellow Jan Juc local Max Murray won the under eight mixed and Point Lonsdale’s Elsie Chapman won the under 10 girls. As one of two under 14 winners, Farrer earned an invite to an all-expenses-paid, three-day camp at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre in northern New South Wales. The Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp includes a day of coaching, two days of competition and heat analysis. “[I am] looking forward to heading to the three-day camp,” Farrer said.

Grovedale 4 has won the top division of Tennis Geelong’s night-time triples competition. The side took out the top prize in last Thursday’s finale to the spring season, which featured some high-quality tennis despite chilly temperatures. After a dominant 6-0 regular season, Grovedale 4 triumphed over Highton Wallabies in the section one grand final 3-3 on sets and 32-25 on games. The Wallabies seemed poised for a potential upset after taking the first two sets in tiebreakers. Julius Busch won over Bianca Duff, one of the top females in Tennis Geelong’s Saturday competition, and Tim Morrison and Lachie Pike won the first doubles over Jai Bosnjak and Dave Meehan. Morrison, a newcomer to Tennis Geelong, played some of his best tennis of the season against Bosnjak, one of the stars at Grovedale. However, Grovedale came right back, with Meehan taking the second singles 6-2 over Pike, and also won the second doubles 6-4. A 6-1 third doubles win by Grovedale solidified the premiership before Bosnjak retired out of caution with a minor injury while down 5-4 to Morrison. In other action on Thursday night, the Sijoma Aces from Portarlington won the section two crown by defeating the Wombats 3-3 27-25. In section three, Beuzh, a team of friends from Deakin University’s medical school, won 5-1 34-19 over Grovedale 3. The Cockatoos from Drysdale edged out the Magpies, 3-3 30-23 in section four. The only upset of the night was in section five grand final where Grovedale’s BITG team took out St Mary’s undefeated Coco Bewares, 3-3 28-25. The 2020 spring season had the largest participation in the competition’s two-year history, according to triples secretary Tyler Krumholz. “Tennis Geelong’s triples competition is one of the most unique tennis leagues in the country,” he explained. “Its hybrid registration model allows for teams of club members, as well as individuals that are not affiliated with a club.” Summer season registrations are open until early February at: tennis.com.au/ tennisgeelonginc
SPORT Geelong football to kick off again in April 2021 Football will kick off across Geelong and the Bellarine in the first three weeks of April, with staggered grand finals to showcase the different leagues. Bellarine Football Netball League (BFNL) will commence on April 3, 2021, while Geelong Football Netball League (GFNL) will start on April 17, AFL Barwon announced on Monday. The dates apply for senior football, senior netball and reserves competitions. The announcement follows the cancellation of the region’s football and netball seasons in 2020 due to COVID-19. Last month, Geelong & District Football
League (GDFL) announced its senior competitions would commence on April 10. Colac and District Football Netball League (CDFNL) will begin with a stand-alone game on April 3, with its opening round to continue from April 10. The staggered fixtures mean the BFNL and GFNL will avoid a grand final clash with the GDFL. Finals will begin on August 14, 21 and 28 for the BFNL, CDFNL and GFNL respectively. Grand finals will take place on September 4 for the BFNL and September 18 for the GFNL, while the CDFNL and GDFL will share September 11 for their big games.
All AFL Barwon female football and junior male football will begin on April 17. The TAC Road Safety Round will start on July 17, while the Pride Cup will take place between Newtown & Chilwell and Leopold on April 18. “All dates … are subject to change,” AFL Barwon said in a statement on Monday. “After a cancelled senior season and interrupted junior season in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, we cannot wait to see our member clubs back out on the field and court.” Full fixtures: aflbarwon.com.au Luke Voogt

Cameron sets high goal By Luke Voogt Jeremy Cameron vowed to chase his best season yet as he took up the number once belonging to the man known in Geelong as ‘God’. The star full forward will don number 5 in 2021, worn by the greatest Cats player to hold that position – Gary Ablett senior – and the legendary Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer. “It’s a great number to be running out there in,” the 27-year-old said on Monday. “But I know there’s a lot of hard work between now and then in front of me, and I’m looking forward to that more than anything to be honest. “I want to have my best season I’ve ever had.” The former Giant and 2019 Coleman Medallist has kicked 427 goals in his 171-game AFL career. But he said he wanted to hit the “restart button” and prove himself anew at Geelong. “I don’t want to set low goals, I want to set a high standard and train really hard over the summer, and I’ve already started that probably about six weeks ago. “I only had my first run today with the young guys but it was great to get to know them.” Cameron expected more intense scrutiny in AFL heartland than in Sydney, but he said the rewards were greater in Victoria too. He looked forward to being closer to family in regional Victoria. An avid golfer and fisherman, Cameron has yet to buy a house in Geelong but revealed he was looking for a place close to one of the city’s many boat ramps.
“I’m sure after Christmas that will happen quickly and then [Geelong] will really start to feel like home,” he said. Number 4, most recently worn by the son of ‘God’, Gary Ablett junior, will go to Shaun Higgins, the man the Cats are tipping to replace him on the forward flank. The former Bulldog and Kangaroo grew up in Geelong and was thrilled to live close to family and friends again. He described walking onto Kardinia Park
as “surreal”, saying the ground looked very different to when he had watched the Cats growing up as a “mad Geelong supporter”. Higgins and wife Heidi have twins on the way, while his sister Danielle Orr is playing in the Cats women’s side. “She actually didn’t recognise me [at Kardinia Park on Saturday] – I think it was the colours – she walked straight past me,” he said. New midfielder Isaac Smith will wear number 7, most recently belonging to champion defender Harry Taylor. “There probably won’t be as many defensive efforts in the number 7 anymore,” the 31-year-old laughed. The former Hawk said he was surprised at how “friendly” Geelong locals were toward him after the move, given the clubs’ fierce modern rivalry. “I can’t say Geelong people were too friendly to me over the last 10 years,” he said. The Cats’ top draft Max Holmes will wear number 9, while fellow draftees Nick Stevens and Shannon Neale have claimed 21 and 33. Holmes spent a sleepless night “tossing and turning” after the excitement of being drafted, he told Cats media. The 2019 Australian under-18 400m hurdles champion hoped to use his running ability on the wing for the Cats. “I like to kick it long and hit a target, so hopefully I can break the lines and break open the game like that.” Category B rookie and former basketballer Paul Tsapatolis will don number 36.
Improved weather has given us fisherman a great opportunity to get out and soak a line with some fantastic reports coming in. Queenscliff is still fishing very well for calamari in the bight. Rob Vecoli from Trellys Geelong got out on Monday, casting off the surf and finding his bag of 10 squid in no time with white 3.5 size jigs working best. Australian salmon have also showed up in good numbers inside the rip, snatching up just about anything you can put in their face – white occys have been a favourite. Barwon Heads has continued to get better and better with reports from in the river and offshore coming in hot. Fishing the mouth of the river on the incoming tide has produced some fantastic numbers of silver trevally. Casting small grub-style plastics has been deadly in landing great numbers of fish, with some measuring up to 45cm, as well as plenty of bi-catch such as salmon and king George whiting. Offshore, snapper are still showing no sign of slowing down and gone fishing charters are finding plenty of fish to about 5kg, with bulk numbers of smaller fish amongst them. Dropping baits such as squid and salmon in 40 metres of water has been by far the most effective. It’s without question the big news this week is the tuna off Barwon Heads and through to the Rip. Anywhere between 20 to 50 metres of water has been holding fantastic numbers of fish, ranging from 6 to 20kg. Trolling skirted lures or Divers has been the most popular technique, although casting stick baits and poppers has also been super effective – especially when they are working bait to the surface. They are currently feeding on pilchards so any blue or pilchard pattern lures should work a treat. There has also been a few kingfish reports roll in all along the coast, ranging in size from legal to about 85cm, with Berkley Skid Jigs being a fantastic lure. The Otway streams have been firing quite well this week for the local brown trout, the Cumberland River is a fantastic spot to give it a crack with fish holding in great numbers.
