Dog attack pain By Danielle Kutchel A Narre Warren woman was forced to watch in horror as her dogs were attacked by a neighbour’s dog in her own house. Stephanie Korosa’s 14-year-old cavalier and four-year-old mastiff were allegedly attacked by her neighbour’s American staffy while she was out of the house. Ms Korosa said she had left her dogs asleep on her bed while she did the school run on Monday 29 March. She said when she arrived home, she knew something was wrong when she heard the dogs barking. Entering her house, she said she saw the neighbour’s dog in her room, tossing her dogs around. “I yelled for help. This went on for 25 minutes. It was agonising,” she said. “[My neighbour] walked in with a broom. I was screaming and trying to break it up. “It was tossing my dog around like a ragdoll, it was like a crocodile with prey.” Even with the two of them there, Ms Korosa said they couldn’t break the dog’s hold. She alleged it had smashed through her fence palings and gotten into the house through her back sliding door. “It’s my worst nightmare,” she said. She was in contact with neighbours immediately after the attack but hasn’t heard from them since. She said the neighbour has not offered to assist with vet bills or take responsibility for the attack. Meanwhile, Ms Korosa’s vet bill has hit more than $2000. After the attack, she contacted the council and was stunned by their response. After being assured the neighbour’s dog would be seized, she said the council told her that would not happen and no action would be taken. “All of a sudden there’s no case, because they can’t determine who bit who first,” she said. “I’m so frustrated.”

Ms Korosa said her own dogs are still in pain and suffering from anxiety, and she is considering her legal options. “It’s not about the money, it’s not about the vet bills, it’s the principles and the morals,” she said. “Take responsibility, take ownership, be empathetic.” Daniel Osborne, manager safer communities at the City of Casey, said the alleged incident was being investigated.
“All dog attack investigations are completed within the framework set out under Sec 29 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994. As there were no witnesses to the incident, Council has been unable to take further action,” he said, asking anyone with information to contact the City of Casey on 9705 5200. The RSPCA confirmed the alleged attack does not fall under its jurisdiction as it is responsible for investigating acts of cruelty by people towards animals.

Cultural celebration day More than 200 members of the Afghan community celebrated International Women’s Day and the Nawruz Festival last month with the Bakhtar Community Association. The joint event was held in Somerville on Friday 12 March and featured speeches from Bassir Qadiri, chairperson of Bakhtar; Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards, Russell Barrett of Victoria Police, Bakhtar Cultural Association youth coordinator Benazir Rasoli and Ashleigh Newnham from Monash Legal Service. The speeches were followed by poetry, artistic Indian dance, award presentations, live music, Afghan national dances and a fashion show. Bakhtar Women of The Year Award is an annual award program initiated by Bakhtar Cultural Association in 2019 to acknowledge the exceptional contribution, achievements and commitment of Afghan Women in Australia. This year saw a number of outstanding and inspirational finalists nominated from many parts of Australia, all of whom received a nomination certificate on the night: Drkhanai Sayed Ansari - Melbourne Gulgotai Bezhan - Melbourne Maryam Zahid - Sydney Mursal Jamshedi - Adelaide Roia Atmar - Perth Zahra Haidar Big - Shepparton Maryam Zahid won the title of Bakhtar Women of the Year 2021 and the award was presented to her by Ms Richards. Maryam Zahid came to Australia as a refugee in 1999 at age 20. She works as a domestic violence prevention project officer for Sydney West Multicultural Services, working with community leaders and with newly arrived refugees and migrants in Western Sydney.

Award nominees receive their certificates. She is a bilingual health educator at NSW Refugee Health and also volunteers for various community causes. As well, Maryam is an emerging theatre writer. Her theatre show The Good Woman, which was launched in August 2019, has been a spectacular success. As the founder of the Afghan Women on the Move Inc, Maryam has successfully led refugee women in arts and cultural programs as part of the Daneha exhibition and performance pro-
gram at Blacktown Arts. Also on the day, Navid Forogh and Favad Hassani received recognition awards for their contribution towards the Afghan community through Bakhtar Cultural Association. The event was supported by the City of Casey, the Victorian Government, Victorian Multicultural Commission and PRD Legal.

Rattlers raise spirits By Danielle Kutchel Casey firies have raised thousands for the annual Good Friday Appeal as residents opened their hearts and wallets for the cause. Berwick CFA and Narre Warren CFA collected a total of $10,472.35 from their collection spot at the High Street intersection in Berwick, beating their total from 2019. Berwick firefighter Meg, whose 20-monthold son Bailey has spent time in the specialist care of the hospital , said the total was “incredible” and said the Berwick and Narre Warren CFA crews were grateful to those who donated. “The Berwick CFA and Narre Warren CFA would like to send a huge thankyou to everyone who donated at either the High Street intersection on the day or to our virtual tin shake,” she said. Over on Sladen Street in Cranbourne, members of the Cranbourne CFA raised $19,495.25, bringing Casey’s total to $29,967.60. “We definitely weren’t expecting that,” said Cranbourne firefighter Zoe Russell. “In 2019 we only raised $13,500 at that intersection so it’s a big jump after the year we’ve had.” She said passers-by had wanted to give “as much as they could”, and even donations of just 50 cents had made a huge difference. Ms Russell said she and her fellow firies hope that the money raised will help give sick kids better quality of life, improving the technology available to help them get better and live the life they deserve. “We hope it goes a long way,” she said. Overall, the CFA as a whole collected a whopping $1,028,328 for the Royal Children’s Hospital. On Good Friday, CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan presented the cheque for more than $1 million alongside members from Berwick and Narre Warren Fire Brigades. Mr Heffernan gave congratulations to all involved in this year’s Appeal. “It was an honour to present the cheque to the Royal Children’s Hospital on behalf of the dedicated CFA members right across Victoria,” he said. “CFA brigades have a long and rich history

Motorists in Casey were in a hurry to get to their Easter celebrations over the weekend, if the results of Operation Nexus are anything to go by. Operation Nexus ran from 12.01am on Thursday 1 April until 11.59pm Monday 5 April, and during that time Victoria Police handed out 87 infringements for speeding offences in the Casey police service area. A total of 19 unregistered vehicles were picked up over the long weekend too, and police found one disqualified driver and two unlicensed drivers. One vehicle was impounded. Seven drivers in the Casey area were under the influence - five from alcohol, and two from drugs. Six drivers were caught disobeying signals and signs, and police found one seatbelt offence along with three motorists using their phones while driving. But cyclists came out on top over the long weekend, with no cyclist offences detected.

Police are appealing for witnesses who were in the vicinity of Amberley Park Reserve, Narre Warren on 28 March 2021. At approximately 1pm, a 15-year-old female, wearing dark clothing, was at Amberley Park Reserve. It is believed the female was assaulted by a male and was located unconscious by an unidentified female walking her dogs. Police are appealing for the female witness, and any other witnesses who observed or heard anything relating to the incident at the time. Shear delight as ‘man-bun’ gets the chop Just under 100 Rotarians and guests attended a vocational visit to Alameda Homestead Nursery on Wednesday 31 March. In addition to a tour of the nursery to learn about plant propagation and the range of clematis’ that are available, the participants were treated to a roast dinner and desserts. A highlight of the evening was the shearing of Rotarian Adrian Funston’s (Funno’s) man bun to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Funno had been cultivating his man bun since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in February 2020. Despite ongoing ribbing about his new hair
Drivers caught in Easter rush
Casey Highway Patrol had a busy night at the end of March, impounding two vehicles within minutes of each other. Initially, the unit intercepted a Toyota sedan driving on Monahans Road in Cranbourne. The 33-year-old driver recorded a positive reading to alcohol in his system, a positive recording to illicit drugs in his system and to top it off he was unlicensed. His vehicle was impounded for 28 days and he will face a magistrate to explain his poor choices at a later date. Whilst the members were speaking to the driver, they could hear a car doing burnouts nearby. They drove a few metres up the road and located a Holden Commodore sedan with smoking tyres and rubber on the road. The 20-year-old driver had only ever held a Victorian learners permit and he had been driving without a licence holder present. His car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1004 and he will also face court at a later date.

Think pink to defeat killer By Danielle Kutchel Party lovers and cancer warriors are invited to kick up their heels while kicking cancer to the curb at an upcoming fundraising cocktail event. A Touch of Pink Cocktail Party promises to be a post-Covid spectacle while also raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, to contribute to game-changing research to stop deaths from this horrible disease. Brentwood Park Primary School teacher Cassie Van Zeyl has spent over nine months planning the epic event, which she hopes will not only raise funds for a wonderful cause, but also help members of the hospitality and entertainment industries get back on their feet. Her passion for the subject is driven by a personal touch; she counts many breast cancer survivors amongst her family and friends and has long supported fundraising projects for breast cancer like the Mother’s Day Classic. Last year, she reached out to La Porchetta Rowville with the idea of holding a post-Covid fundraising party for the cause, and was delighted when they came on board. Since then, around 70 sponsors from within the local community have also joined the event with donations and contributions of their own. “It was the most beautiful combination of positivity I have seen in a really long time,” she recalled. “It was like a domino effect in the community, because everyone was excited to go to a fundraising event that’s unique, and it’s obviously for an amazing cause.” Over 40 businesses have contributed to a raffle to be held on the day, with prizes includ-
ing high tea vouchers and hampers. Entertainment will be provided by Pulse Entertainment and magician Johnny Balance. As the day gets closer, Ms Van Zeyl said she’s both relieved the event will go ahead, and grateful for the support of so many to put it together. “I think it restores hope in the community people love to know there’s normality and people are still happy to contribute to the community and raise money for charity,” she said. “I want them to feel like part of a bigger purpose. “I want them walking away from the party feeling ... happy and whole.” A Touch of Pink Cocktail Party will be held on Saturday 17 April at La Porchetta Rowville, from 12pm-3.30pm. Kiwis issue welcome again: International travel is back! By Danielle Kutchel It’s the news we’ve all been waiting for - international travel is back on the cards! New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on the establishment of a travel bubble with Australia on Tuesday 6 April. This means that from 11:59pm Sunday 18 April, Australians will be able to travel to the land of the long white cloud, quarantine-free. After a year of lockdowns and the erasure of travel plans, it’s likely to be welcome news for many. Ms Ardern said in a press conference that for the purposes of the travel bubble, Austra-
lia would essentially be considered another region of New Zealand. Any Covid-19 outbreaks would see restrictions reinstated but these would be on a state-by-state basis. “For instance, if a case is found that is quite clearly linked to a border worker in a quarantine facility and is well contained, you’ll likely see travel continue in the same way as you could see life continue if that happened here in Australia,” Ms Ardern said. “If, however, a case was found that was not clearly linked to the border, and a state responded by a short lockdown to identify more information, we’d likely pause flights from that state in the same way we would stop
travel into and out of a region in New Zealand as if it was were going into a full lockdown. “And if we saw multiple cases of unknown origin, we would likely suspend flights for a set period of time.” Australia’s biosecurity laws have been changed so that citizens don’t need to apply for special permission to travel to our neighbour. New Zealand is the only country that Australians don’t need an exemption to travel to. There is also no vaccine requirement for trans-Tasman travel, however passengers will need to wear a mask on the flight and anyone with cold or flu symptoms will not be allowed to fly.

Open the door to fostering The State Government is encouraging more Victorians to open their homes and their hearts to foster children by making the fostering process easier. On Saturday 3 April Minister for Child Protection and Carers Luke Donnellan met Vince and Kym, who have been foster carers for more than 20 years. They have cared for more than 70 children and currently provide long-term placement for three teenage boys. While there are challenges and ups-anddowns, Vince and Kym believe the experience of caring for a child is always worth it - and there is a lot of support when you get started. The Labor Government has committed $5.8 million over four years to continue the Fostering Connections program to promote the benefits of foster caring and make the recruitment process more accessible for Victorians. Run by the Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare, Fostering Connections provides a centralised service that connects prospective carers with foster care agencies, helping Victorians find the right agency in their area. Fostering Connections also provides accurate and detailed information about the process of becoming a foster carer and answers any questions people might have about fostering before they contact an agency. At any given time, about 1,700 children are being looked after by foster carers or are waiting for a placement. While the Covid pandemic has placed significant stress on many families across Victoria, it has also demonstrated the enormous goodwill of Victorians to support each other during hard times. The State Government has committed
The State Government is calling on families to open their doors to foster care. more than a billion dollars in services and supports for children and families in the Victorian Budget 2020/21. This includes $64.7 million over the next four years and ongoing funding for the Home Stretch program, to extend state care and supports for young people in care from 18 to 21 years old. This means young people can stay with their kinship or foster carer for longer, or transition to supported independent living arrangements. The government has also allocated $10.3 million to the Better Futures program, which helps young people in care prepare for life after care, including education, employment advice and life coaching. Training and supports are available to foster carers through the Carer KaFE initiative and Client Support Funding. Now that state borders are open, the Easter and school holidays are upon us and Aussies are hitting the road in droves, the Continence Foundation of Australia is asking for help to hunt down Australia’s regional public toilets. The foundation is asking those who are out and about across the regions, whether on family holidays, road trips, weekends away or those who just want to help people out, to register the location of regional public toilets on The National Public Toilet Map through www. toiletmap.gov.au or on the app, available on Google Play or the App store. The National Public Toilet Map means there is no need to get stuck without a loo while you are travelling or out and about, and everyone who submits a regional public toilet location to the map has a chance to win one of three $500 Eftpos vouchers. While this is a cheeky campaign to build up The National Public Toilet Map, the underlying purpose is to support the millions of Australians living with continence related issues by providing them with a real time, reliable map of public toilets across the country. The National Public Toilet Map, which lists over 19,000 toilets, gives people the confidence to go about their lives, feeling supported. “The fear of not having access to toilets in public can restrict, and even stop, people from leaving their home for everyday activities,” Rowan Cockerell, CEO of the Continence Foundation of Australia, says. People living with a variety of health conditions, expectant or new mothers and the elderly can all be living with incontinence but the toilet map is also an asset to families with young children, grey nomads and day trippers alike. Fun and laughs at awards By Danielle Kutchel Easter Monday in Cranbourne West was full of laughter, colour and fun as families enjoyed the first ever African Cultural Day Awards. This event was hosted by Multicultural Youth Support Services (MYSS), at Cranbourne West Community Hub. Families came to celebrate the vibrant African culture and the achievements of youth within the south-eastern African-Australian community. “We weren’t sure about the weather in the morning but it turned out to be great sunny day” said MYSS project manager and speaker Danyal Diallo The celebrations started outdoors with children enjoying a nearby playground, impromptu soccer games, a barbecue lunch and face painting by Mel’s Face Painting Melbourne. As the weather cooled down the families headed inside the hub for the formalities of the day. “It was a huge turnout; we were expecting between 50-100 people to arrive; it turned out in big numbers,” Mr Diallo said. Guests enjoyed an array of traditional African dances as well as a speech given by an inspirational year 12 student from the MYSS Homework Club, Sarah Machar. Sarah shared the challenges she has faced coming into a new country and learning a new language from scratch. The event acknowledged the hard work of MYSS in connecting the community, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when MYSS staff distributed supermarket vouchers and advocated for better support for members of the community. This hard work was acknowledged and recognised by the City of Casey, which named MYSS the ‘2021 Community Group of the Year’ earlier this year.

Mr. Aguto said: “MYSS is a product for African communities that is led by the community and for the community. “It is a privilege to serve the community in such a direct way. It’s fulfilling having to see the seeds we plant in our generation and to ponder on what they may become in the future, I thank God for it all,” he said. Mr. Aguto spoke of the “power of unity” to connect the African community to each other and the wider south-eastern community.
Tribute was paid to the assistance received from the State Government, especially Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ross Spence, for being supportive toward African communities during the Covid-19 crisis. Schools get update funds Students at more than 200 schools across Victoria are set to benefit from an essential maintenance boost, thanks to the State Government. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas announced that two schools in the Narre Warren South electorate, Hillsmeade Primary School and Coral Park Primary School, are among the 230 schools that will share in $10.4 million of Planned Maintenance Program (PMP) funding. PMP funding ensures schools can undertake essential work to grounds and classrooms such as fixing roofs and windows, painting, resurfacing floors and replacing windows, as well as external landscaping works like pathways and lighting. Hillsmeade Primary School has been allocated a total of $105,000 for high priority maintenance tasks including $95,000 identified in the Specialist Assessment to address the school’s roof plumbing issues, and $10,000 identified in the Rolling Facilities Assessment for cladding repair, downpipe replacement, external floor repainting, roof repair, and wall repainting. Coral Park Primary School will receive
$60,000 including $35,000 for tasks identified in the Specialist Assessment for their roof plumbing issues and $25,000 for tasks identified in the Rolling Facilities Assessment such as air conditioner repair, cladding repair, fascia replacement, and shade structure repair. More than $2.4 million will go towards maintenance to Shelter-in-Place buildings at 11 schools, which provides emergency accommodation to staff and students in the case of a bushfire. The funding is on top of over $27 million of PMP funding already provided to 357 schools in the 2020 school year, and ensures existing buildings at Victoria’s 1,500 state schools are safe, modern and properly maintained. Works are determined by an evaluation system which uses up-to-date information on the condition of schools to create a faster and more targeted allocation of PMP funding. “It is important to continue maintaining our local schools to ensure that students have the facilities they need to achieve their best results,” Mr Maas said. “Hillsmeade Primary and Coral Park Primary are great local schools and these works will help improve their facilities.”
Cabbie’s $27k rort caught By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Doveton cabbie of 20 years has been disqualified after rorting more than $27,000 from the state’s disability taxi program. Metin Akkusoglu pleaded guilty to a rolled-up charge of obtaining property by deception from the Multi Purpose Taxi Program (MPTP) at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 23 March. He had been accused of fraudulently processing 14 disabled passengers’ MPTP cards on 749 occasions in 2018 and 2019. Each time, Akkusoglu pocketed half-fare subsidies of up to $60 from Commercial Passenger Vehicle Victoria (CPVV) for trips when MPVP members weren’t in his cab. The most commonly misused was a Dandenong North passenger’s MPVP card, which was retained by Akkusoglu after a cab ride in May 2018. The cab driver later fraudulently processed the card 697 times to the value of $25,205. The passenger didn’t speak English. His daughter told CPVV investigators that she believed neither of her parents used the half-price taxi card. “(The daughter) was unaware that the card was missing until she was told by the CPVV,” a prosecution submission stated. “To her knowledge her parents never use taxis.” Another passenger left her card with Akkusoglu after he dropped her off at Melbourne Airport to fly to New Zealand.
Akkusoglu was also charged with allowing a young male to log into his Cabcharge system and process the MPVP card several times at Akkusoglu’s house in August 2019. On 4 January, CPVV cancelled Akkusoglu’s driver accreditation due to his “MPTP misconduct”. He was disqualified from reapplying for four years. CPVV chief executive Aaron de Rozario told Star Journal that the rort was a “deliberate attempt over a significant period of time to defraud a system set up to help some of Victoria’s most vulnerable people”. MPTP was a “lifeline for thousands of people” unable to use other forms of public transport due to disability or other accessibility needs”, Mr de Rozario said. “Being able to use MPTP services allows them to participate in community life, and in many cases access employment or education.” He said the CPVV had multiple processes to identify fraudulent MPTP transactions. “We take MPTP fraud very seriously. “Anyone who commits fraud, no matter the level, risks criminal action and losing their right to work in the commercial passenger vehicle industry.” On 23 March, magistrate Andrew Halse placed Akkusoglu to a 12-month community correction order including 120 hours of unpaid work. The cabbie repaid $15,000 before the matter was finalised. He was ordered by the magistrate to pay back the remaining $12,176.35 to CPVV. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Get off the bus, train, or tram a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way 3. Leave the car at least one kilometre away from school and walk the rest of the way 4. Facelift: School upgrade builders are announced Upgraded facilities at Hampton Park Secondary College are a step closer to construction with the appointment of the builders to undertake the project. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas announced that McColl Smith Projects Pty Ltd has been appointed to construct the school’s $3.9 million upgrade. The upgrade will redevelop the existing TBlock into a STEAM/FabLab facility, helping to a create 21st century facility which focuses on skill building and innovation within the classroom. The package of works will also include new student toilet facilities. It’s all part of Stage 2 of the school’s upgrade masterplan and was funded as part of the State Government’s 2019/20 Budget. A total of $14.68 million has been committed to Hampton Park Secondary College to deliver its masterplan. “I’m thrilled to announce that Stage 2 of Hampton Park Secondary College’s master plan is another step closer with the appointment of builders McColl Smith Projects,” Mr Maas said. “Upgrading Hampton Park Secondary Col-

Students at Strathaird Primary School are a step closer to getting the facilities they need for a great start in life, with an architect appointed to design the school’s exciting upgrade. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas announced on Tuesday 30 March that Gray Puksand has been appointed to design the school’s $10 million upgrade. The upgrade will build a new toilet block and a state-of-the-art eco cubby which is a multipurpose facility including learning spaces and a kitchen for students, parent program sessions and for whole of school events. The eco cubby will enhance the learning of students and their understanding of innovations in sustainability while leading to lower energy use and reduced waste. “It’s exciting to announce Gray Puksand as the architect as it is an important step in delivering this project for the local community,” Mr Maas said. “This investment builds on previous upgrades and maintenance of our local schools and ensures that our students have the best opportunity to learn and succeed.”

Primary school aged children across Australia will take some important steps towards a healthier future by participating in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 14 May. National Walk Safely to School Day is a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking, especially to and from school, can provide for the long term well-being of children. Plea for Burma peace Endeavour Hills man Hector De Santos is waging a campaign against escalating military violence in his Burmese homeland. The 80-year-old has written to the Australian Prime Minister, MPs as well as 12 embassies in the hope for intervention against the military junta’s “inhuman” repression in Burma, also known as Myanmar. He’s also lobbied the Victorian Council of Churches to launch a Day of Prayer. “I’m trying to build awareness about what is happening in Burma,” Mr De Santos said. “What the military junta is doing is terrible, it is inhuman. “I’m just trying to do something, what little I can do to make a difference. “I’m hoping that I can convince some regional government to intervene with the Burmese military.” In his letters to governments, he has called for the release of democratically-elected leader Saw Aung San Suu Kyi and her party. He’s pleaded also for immediate “trade, military and aid sanctions”, and for humanitarian aid to be channelled through NGOs in the nation. Burma’s military seized control of the government on February 1 deposing the country’s ruling party the National League for Democracy (NLD). Since the coup, hundreds of pro-democracy protesters have been killed by violent military and security services force - including reports of 114 unarmed people including six children on Saturday 27 March. Security forces reportedly opened fire at a funeral the following day. The Chief of the Australian Defence Force joined defence chiefs from 11 other nations condemning the “use of lethal force against unarmed people”.
Hector De Santos is campaigning against the violent military coup in Burma. Australia’s Foreign Minister Marise Payne also condemned in “the strongest terms” the “horrific use of lethal force”. “We call urgently on the Myanmar security forces to exercise restraint, uphold the rule of law and allow the Myanmar people to exercise their rights to peaceful protest.” According to Mr De Santos’s contacts in Burma, the military is abducting and brutalizing protesters. “I’m told that young woman are being grabbed off the street, sedated and raped and then dumped outside of towns and cities,” he said. In 1969, Mr De Santos and his wife Wendy fled Burma’s military government after being
marginalised along with other religious and ethnic minorities. “My father was Portuguese and my mother was half-English, half-Indian,” he said “We didn’t have the chance of having a future there, so we came to Australia.” In 1966 they obtained a one-year travel visa and left for Thailand with just Mrs De Santos’s wedding ring and the necklace she wore. After working for the US Navy in Thailand, Hector and Wendy came to Australia in 1969 as migrants. Mr De Santos worked three jobs for about 70 hours a week. During weekdays, he was a factory clerk. Weeknights, a kitchen hand. And weekends,
a wedding photographer. He didn’t have executive qualifications, but he could earn an executive’s wage, he says. “There were plenty of jobs in those days - as much work as you wanted.” In between, he ran from Clayton to his Moorabbin workplace in training for marathons. In retirement, he has volunteered as an English tutor at migrant and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia, helps at a Burmese community garden at Springvale and joins plantings at the lush Frog Hollow Reserve near his home. “I just want to give back to the community because from the start, everyone helped me.”

Rex name shame By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name. Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up. He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place. “I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News. “People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth. “It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project. “I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. The second round of the $572,000 Supporting Carers Locally Grants is now open - part of a State Government program aimed at increasing support of carer health and wellbeing. Grants of $20,000 to $40,000 are available for local community organisations to increase opportunities for carers to be physically and mentally healthy and boost social connectivity for carers with family, friends, other carers and their local community. Across Victoria, more than 736,000 carers give their time and effort to look after a family member or friend who needs them. Unpaid carers support people with different care needs including people with chronic disease, mental illness, people with a disability, older people with care needs and those receiving end-of-life or palliative care. The recent Mental Health Royal Com-
mission final report identified the importance of supporting the mental health of carers as a key focus. The final report of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System identified the importance of the role of carers and of involving and supporting them. Giving carers the support they need is a key priority of the State Government through the Victorian Carer Strategy 201822 - the first whole-of-government strategy recognising carers. “We want carers in all parts of Victoria to be happy and healthy, with support in their community and the opportunity to connect with others - that’s why this funding is so vital,” said Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers Luke Donnellan. A Casey choir will take to the stage in an operatic classic later this year, joined by Australia’s leading opera company. The Melbourne Youth Chorale - formerly Berwick Youth Choir - will perform ‘Carmen’ with Opera Australia at Bunjil Place on Friday 28 May. Kerry Alexander, vice president of the chorale, said the event was an “exciting opportunity” for the performers. “Our choristers are really looking forward to the experience of actually performing on stage with Opera Australia,” she said. After nine months of online rehearsals, the choir is back learning music face-to-face once more. Ms Alexander said she’s proud of her singers for rising to the challenge and learning the music to Carmen in just over two months - a very tight turnaround. It’s not the first time the Melbourne Youth Chorale has had the chance to perform with Opera Australia; the two first collaborated in 2018 on Madame Butterfly. Chorister Catherine Charles is fortunate to have been involved in Madame Butterfly and is now looking forward to her role in Carmen. “It’s even more exciting to be invited to perform a second time in Carmen. It’s such a famous and dramatic opera,” she said. The Berwick local is no stranger to challenging operatic pieces; in Madame Butterfly, she and her fellow choristers performed the Humming Chorus, which she described as “sad but very beautiful”. “It was a challenge to learn to control your breathing for that piece,” she recalled. One of her favourite memories of Madame Butterfly is of watching the costume makers creating a wig for character Cio-Cio San - the eponymous Madame Butterfly. This time around, she’s also looking forward to seeing the costumes and sets, as well as learning the music for Carmen. Ms Charles said the experience of performing with Opera Australia will stand her in good stead for the future.

the region. A new league – one seen as the benchmark for Victorian community football – as well as new opponents, conditions and expectations make for one mouth-watering opportunity. There’s much anticipation and focus on the Wickers heading into its first season in the Premier Division after winning three flags since 2015, and with new coach Clint Evans steering the ship, there is growing confidence that the group can do some damage and really push itself against the likes of Vermont, Blackburn, Balwyn and many more powerful clubs. A round one blockbuster against Noble Park – the Wickers’ closest Eastern rival – will make for spectacular viewing for a variety of reasons, with the 17 April clash expecting to draw a monster crowd at the picturesque Ed-
win Flack Reserve. Understanding the need to tinker with the list slightly after 2019’s runnersup finish to Narre Warren and the power of the Eastern league, Evans has set about bringing back some former premiership heroes to the club, as well as lock away almost all of its champion list. Headlining the list of returnees/recruits is star ex-skipper Bryce Rutherford, one of the south east’s most dominant midfielders, important defender Michael Riseley who played with Woori Yallock in 2019, as well as forward Trent Thomas. Anthony Vella and Anthony Burr are also two huge additions to the Wickers after joining the club via Noble Park, but played at Cranbourne in 2019. Vella in particular is pure class with ball in hand and an elite runner who will add another element of speed and dare to the Wickers. One of the Wickers’ major strengths will be its midfield group, headlined by Bryce Rutherford, Madi Andrews, Travis Tuck, Anthony Vella and many more, while the forward and backlines are unbelievably stable and possess a strong mix of power and running ability. After kicking 64 goals in 2019, and 56 in 2018, Harry Money is another to keep an eye on. He’s a handful for opposition defenders because of his ability overhead plus his speed at ground level and is sure to relish the challenge of playing on Eastern’s defenders after a couple of dominant seasons. The likes of Tim Gunn, Jo West, Tom Brennan and Bailey Asher are also unheralded stars who are also vitally important to the side’s fortunes. After missing 2019 with a knee injury, skipper Luke Sheppard is basically a new recruit for the club and is a genuine line-breaking player capable of tearing the game apart. The Wickers will certainly feel the loss of Lucas Jellyman-Turner, but feel it has plenty of depth and kids coming through to cover the speedster’s departure. It won’t be an easy opening month of the season for Evans’ group, with the Bulls to open the season, before Rowville (fourth in 2019) and Balwyn (second in 2019) in consecutive weeks, but one thing is for certain, the Wickers won’t take a backwards step. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Brookers ready to excite By Nick Creely Gembrook Cockatoo expects each round to bring different challenges, but is confident it has what it takes to do some damage in the AFL Outer East’s Division 1 competition in 2021. The Brookers are up from Division 2 – where it placed fourth in 2019 – and understand just what is coming as they gear up for Division 2 reigning premiers Seville on Saturday 17 April. “It’s good to get Seville first up being a team we played last year, it’ll be a good gauge of where both of us are at,” Brookers coach Brad Coller said. “It’s good because we respect the unfurling of their flag a little bit more than if they were playing another side, so we’ll pay our respects to that, it’s a good achievement, and that’s where we want to get to.” Coller said that his developing group was itching to get back into the swing of competitive football after a year off. “We’ve got such a young side, everyone’s kind of jumping out of their skin to get going,” he said.
“It’d be a bit different if you were an older team where they probably appreciate that time away. “But our guys are just hanging out to play to be honest. We can’t wait.” The Brookers have secured the majority of its 2019 playing list once again, with just a handful of names departing the club – such as ex-AFL pair Hamish McIntosh and Tarkyn Lockyer – but Coller expects the senior core to stand up, and talented youngsters around the club to take the next step. The Brookers’ under 18 side in 2019 was also unbelievably impressive, winning 11 games and making a semi-final in promising signs for the future. But the Brookers have secured the signature of one serious local footy name – ex-Berwick champion and premiership skipper Michael Harold. Multiple best and fairests, four premierships, interleague matches – the midfield star is a serious addition to the division this season. He’ll be a handful and a half for opposition
players and coaches. Coller said that the club was absolutely thrilled to welcome in Mick after a couple of years off football, not just from an on-field perspective, but the standards he’ll set off-field too. “I went and watched him when he was winning flags for Berwick, he’s always been a champion bloke too and an incredible player so its massive for us,” he said. “He came to training to run one of our fitness sessions, and then after training he said ‘I wouldn’t mind having a run’, and I nearly fell over because I tried to get him in ’19 when I started. “So he came to me which was really good – Mick’s a great leader, he was captain there (at Berwick) for a reason and played some great footy for a long period of time. “For our young list, he’ll be great, and he’ll help us develop even more with the likes of Spud (Michael Firrito) and a few others as well.” The Brookers have also added Brayden
Weller from Cora Lynn and Tyler Joosten from Nar Nar Goon, as well as welcomed back Braden Wood from Emerald. With the Brookers to kick off its season in a matter of days, Coller said that he expects Division 1 to be remarkably competitive, and one where you simply can’t drop the ball at any stages. “I look at three competitions (in 2019) and I think Division One was the most even,” he said. “Both Premier and Div 2 had two or three really quality sides and then it sort of fell away, whereas Div 1, I know from speaking to a few guys involved, you rock up every week not knowing if you’ll win or lose. “It’ll be similar this year, both Seville and us have improved – Berwick Springs is probably the unknown, starting from scratch will be tough, but they have some good juniors coming through so hopefully they’re up to it. “But it’ll be even, Monbulk and Officer probably are the benchmark, but we like to think we’ll be really, really competitive.”
The true heart and soul of Lang Lang By David Nagel The long and proud history of the Lang Lang Football Club is now proudly on display after the Good Friday launch of a new book titled ‘Heart and Soul’. Author Bob Utber and his assistant Lachie Barwick take readers on the long journey back to the late 1800’s when a meeting was held to form a football club. From there, many great players have passed through the change rooms at the Lang Lang Showgrounds – a place the club has called home since its inception in 1900. “Any organisation that has a history as
long as the Lang Lang Football Club deserves to have it on display,” Utber says in his introduction. “I am a great believer in the history of all organisations. Far too often we have neglected our past when it comes to history. “Today’s participants just take it for granted that there has always been a club and are not inclined to delve in to the past but their enjoyment comes from many, many years of hard work and commitment by others.” Utber acknowledged the wonderful contribution that Barwick had made to the publication.
“It was a real surprise when Lachie rang me a couple of years ago to discuss the history of the Lang Lang Football Club,” Utber said. “His passion urged me on to write the book with wonderful statistical information from him. Batt to the future By David Nagel Lang Lang legends Greg and Rod Batt played in an era where it was important to be ruthless and show very little emotion on the football field. It was almost a case of hit-or-be-hit in the ‘70s and ‘80s when the Batt brothers plied their trade for their beloved Tigers. Showing emotion – well it just wasn’t considered the done thing. But even these two tough guys were hit in the heart on Friday as the Lang Lang Football Club hosted its official function to launch its brand new facility on Soldiers Road. “There’s no argument about it, there is definitely an emotional feeling about it all and we couldn’t be happier for the club to be honest,” Rod said, standing shoulder to shoulder with his brother, just as they did in their playing days. “I never thought this day would come to be honest and it’s sensational to be here and see this. The car park is full and you can’t ask for any more than that.” The Batt name is synonymous with Lang Lang, with Fred Batt awarded life membership in 1975 before his son Rod received the ultimate recognition in 1988. Rod’s son Kurt is widely regarded as the greatest ever player at the club. Greg Batt remembers a tough learning experience growing up playing at the Lang Lang showgrounds. “It was a pretty tough era back then, you learnt the hard way, but we had an older brother who was playing in the seniors and he looked after us pretty well until we learnt to look after ourselves,” Greg said. “Col Jones, Titch Risdale, they were tough buggers, and Greg Thom showed no mercy for anyone who got in his road. They had our backs but you wouldn’t turn your back on them if you were the opposition, a few of them got up to mischief. “They looked after us and it was enjoyable, we always felt at home at the football club.” Greg said he hoped the new facility would have the same impact on potential recruits as it had on him on Friday.

The next premiership promises to be one of the more stunning chapters in the storied history of the region.
“We went close a couple of times but were never quite good enough,” Rod explained. “I’ve heard guys that have gone before us, parents and old players and the like, and they’ve dreamed that one day we could do it. “Now I’m in the same boat, hoping my sons could do it - and that’s gone past now - and now they’ll be dreaming of the next generation doing it. It would be a never ending party if it happens and a lot of tears will be shed.” The Batt’s showing emotion about their football club – that’s now considered the done thing.

The likes of Sarah Price, Kath George, and Bianca Brown will be keen to take victory away from her this time around. The Junior Standard Saloon competitors will be back to finish off their feature event final from the previous race meeting in the Junior Jam. After that is over they will compete in Sunday’s racing with the likes of Jack Yeomans, Harry and Owen Cecil, Nathan and Maddison Miles, Cody Drennan and Hunter Carey all competing. Harry Cecil is on pole position for the Junior Jam as top qualifier and Yeomans in his first season of seniors will be keen to win as his junior career winds up. It will be a war on wheels at Drouin this Sunday with the crazy Crash and Bash drivers set to battle it out. 233625 Jeff Blencowe, Leigh Gooding, Daniel Walkinshaw, Mitchell Blencowe, Andrew Cormack, Matt Leek, Victor Benson, and Darwyn Lee are just some of the racers that could figure in the run to the chequered flag. Ladies Standard Saloon action is also on the schedule. Sharlene Laidlaw, Kate Stuchbery and Rebecca Glassborow are some of the drivers who will be keen to chalk up victory.

Nyora Raceway will give fans not one, but two Victorian titles on the same night this Saturday. The Victorian title race for Speedway Sedans - Victoria Junior Sedan competitors in up to 1500cc engine powered race cars - whilst the Victorian Speedway Council Sports Sedans will also compete for their state title on the same night. Also for the first time in years, the Formula 500s are appearing at the ‘Bullring’ for adults and juniors and the event is also supported by the Ladies Standard Saloons. The best of the best in Victorian Junior Sedan racing will line-up in the Speedway Sedans Victorian Junior title with many of the cars that have already been competing at the track among those to watch out for. Carter Metcalfe from Mildura is coming to Nyora for the first time, and so far on results he has been one of only two drivers matching it with winning drivers such as Jayden Bryant and Linken Paterson, the other being Jaxson Vella another who is also in the field. Alexandra and Nyora registered race drivers make up much of the field and local competitors such as the Barton Family, Matilda Farrell, Jessica O’Donnell, Bryce Leek, Rowdy Andreatta, Riley Taylor and others fill up a healthy list of entrants. In the Sports Sedan title race Victorian champion and Nyora member Jamie Paull leads the nominations. The lineup is a cracker and we could pencil in half the field for a potential win with all things going right for them. Some of the drivers to watch though include Officer’s Dale Morrison, Pakenham’s Damien Miller a former champion, Ricky Cornwall, Warrick Taylor from Cranbourne, Tristan McGraw, David Donegan, Lee Beach from Ferntree Gully and Andrew Jordan. Nyora has a great number of competitors in the class all looking for a home track advantage and a top result. Troy Glassborow, Jayde and Chris Aarts, Matt Reddecliffe, Simon Bent and Cameron Dike are some of those racers. All the action on Saturday starts from 4.00pm whilst the gate will be open for public from around 11am for entry. The cost is great value at $20 for an adult, kids 12 to 16 are $10 each whilst all other children are free. Pensioners are $10 and a family ticket of two adults and two kids 12-16 is $50.
