Bearbrass Probus in the red ONE-YEAR-OLD Bearbrass Probus, based in Melbourne’s Docklands, has some serious connoisseurs of wine among its 60 members. This has led to six-weekly wine group meetings involving blind tastings, talks on wine varieties and all the equipment for professional-standard events. Last month’s tasting for 13 members was titled “Make mine Cabernet!” It was run by Bearbrass’s retired educationist Dr Jill de Araugo at the board room of a Southbank 26-storey tower. As she put it, “We took a deep dive into the historic red world of Cabernet Sauvignon. Speaking metaphorically, of course.” Members pay $25 each for their array of wine. “My favorite supplier selling online at 30-50 per cent off, so we got good value,” Jill says. “We roamed op shops for weeks hunting down 140 cheap glasses.” Members enjoyed generous cabernets from SA’s Clare Valley and Coonawarra and samples from Mendoza, Argentina; Chile’s central valley; Bordeaux, France and False Bay, South Africa. Jill wrote tasting notes explaining the value of ‘legs’ in alcohol content, ‘nose’ and “fullness” flavors on front and back palate. The group compared two very different Australian cabernets before trying to identify four cabernets by country. She explained terms like‘elegant’ and ‘doughnut effect’ and ‘carbonic maceration’ and ‘wild fermentation’. After the tasting each member had to share a wine-related story from their chequered past, a merry ending while we ‘mopped up’ what was left in the bottles. Consensus: Wow! Jill did a mighty, professional effort, clearly involving days of preparation for education and good Probus fun.
Beautifully presented side dishes at Bearbrass’s wine tasting. Dr Jill de Araugo in her favourite environment.

Hope for a better year ahead The President Anne Vick HELLO and welcome to all Probus and PAV members, Well after a disastrous year in 2020 I hope all clubs are now up and running and back to normal and have held their AGM,s, with new presidents and committees elected, congratulations to all and I wish them all a more fulfilling year than last year. Unfortunately PAV was unable to hold their first meeting in February due to lack of support from participating clubs with only 10 members responding to the invite, while a lot of effort goes into organising these days the venue ,catering, speakers etc, it’s also very disappointing for the committee and the club not to be able to hold our meetings, I look forward to meeting with all members from various clubs at our May meeting. We held a wine and cheese night via zoom on 26 March unfortunately this was only attended by a few members. A good time was had for those that did attend, I
was unable to participate due to having knee replacement surgery. Many thanks to Jane Johnson who ran the night I believe there were a few hiccups with being able to gain access and PIN numbers Now that all clubs are back and running, please make sure PAV representatives are aware to address all of the activities at there meetings, as it has been bought to my attention that not all members are aware of what PAV stands for, and what we do. Our next activity is the Friendship Day at Pakenham Racecourse on 28 June. Cost is $40 and payments to be paid by 31 May. Make this a great day out, lots of goodies, prizes, and best dressed. See you all there. In January l was fortunate to join all members for their first meeting of the year in Kyabram. The meeting was well attended with over 80 members and a number of apologies, and two guest speakers. l was able to bring back a few good ideas and tips to my own club Croydon Park Probus. For those that don’t know where Kyabram is, it sits between Shepparton and Echuca, in the Goulburn Valley. It is also known as the town where Molly Meldrum
Joan Strahan and Lorraine Hollow from Narre Warren Combined Probus Club at a past Friendship Day at Pakenham races. This year’s is on 28 June, so book now. was born, KY fruits were canned, and later IXL jams, a lovely area to visit and live in. l was fortunate to have lived in Kyabram for many years , my children all went to school there, my son was lucky to have played football with Garry Lyon at school and in the Kyabram district league as a youngster, Yours in Friendship Anne Vick President PAV

THE Probus Club of Kingsbury congratulates Mavis Hughes on attaining the grand age of 100 years on 24 February. Mavis is a foundation member of the club which began in 1995 and attends every monthly meeting come hail or shine. At the March meeting Mavis was presented with a cake (pictured), a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a framed certificate honouring her years as a member of the Probus Club of Kingsbury. The cake was cut and enjoyed by all. Congratulations once again Mavis from all the members and many happy returns.

couldn’t put it down. What is your favourite television show? I don’t really have a favourite show but through Covid-19 I became a full time watcher of Selling Houses and Sell It or List It, both Australian and Canadian versions. What is your favourite movie? It would have to be Sound of Music. I can always watch repeats. What is the best concert you have attended? Many. They are all good but perhaps the Lion King stands out for the costumes and staging. What would be your last meal on earth? Old fashion steak, chips and egg. What event - past, present or future would you like to attend? Another West Coast Eagles grand final. Which six guests - dead or alive - would you invite to your dinner party? My Mum and Dad, Richard Gere, John Steed from Judge John Deed, Lady Di and Sophia Loren.

Mavis turns 100
HOW long have I been involved with Probus? I joined Croydon Park Probus as an inaugural member in October 2017 and was appointed the Membership Secretary role on the day, which I still hold. What is something most people don’t know about you? I was born in Perth, WA, and spent my first 23 years there before moving to Victoria due to my ex-husband’s work. This was originally for a three year period and consequently I am still here, never to return. What has been your most memorable Probus outing, trip or event? In 2019 CPPC went to Yeppoon, which was my first trip away with the club and had a really great time interacting with members from both our club and members from Maroondah. Especially happy hours were enjoyed before dinner most nights. What is your favourite book? I have just finished re-reading Monica McInerney’s Hello from the Gillespies. I

Patient new members WHAT an amazing year 2020 was… a time of uncertainty and loneliness, but also one of hope for the future of our club. Here at Mansfield Mens Probus we managed to encourage, agree to and induct nine new members - Stuart Andrews, Phil Alexander, Geoff Brown, Grant Munro, Harry Cameron, Tony Riley, Neil O’Halloran, Phillip Jensen and Graham Godber. The year started with a large number of new member applications, January and February were taken up with new member attendance and introduction to the group. At our March meeting those nine applicants were not in attendance and their membership was voted on and accepted. But, as it turned out, that was our last meeting until December 2020.
So the patient prospective members had to wait until December and January until they were inducted by president Bruce Bingham. It was certainly a highlight of the first meeting back after Covid lockdown restrictions. The club is looking forward to a much more positive 2021. - Geoff Doyle

Safely meeting again THE East Malvern Probus Combined Club was not idle during the Covid year 2020. Newsletters became fortnightly missives from the webmaster. Digital mentors quickly came up to speed on how to use Zoom and coached the members through to the monthly meetings. The club celebrated Probus Day by delivering a bag of goodies to all members. The end of lockdown in Melbourne got the walkers shaking off the cobwebs and rising early on Mondays to join their friends in Probus on a good long walk laughter and chatter even behind masks had others smiling at a train of walkers surged forever forward - often as many as 20 members attending. Hooray 2021 has arrived and the committee has been busy planning for the year. The event calendar looks like a rainbow and it is hard to find a day for any new events. A sub-committee was formed to write the club’s Covid Plan. They worked hard over several weeks and the even conducted a training session on how the club would host its first meeting - the AGM in March. This session was very important as members must comply with Government regulation as well as venue’s rules. To setup for the meeting became a logistical exercise, everything from before the meeting setup to the end of the meeting needed structure to ensure we met all rules. The sub-committee acquired a QR code for the club. Members must scan in before they can enter the hall. Reduced capacity (1.5m distancing rule) at our facility meant that we would have to hold a hybrid meeting. This involved using a second hall as well as allowing others to attend via Zoom. The second hall has no WiFi but we solved that issue by also using Zoom. This hall is normally very bright and airy so in order to project an image from the laptop onto the screen we had to measure all windows and make blackout curtains. So the AGM was run by using technology that most of our members are not familiar with. An internet dongle will provide internet to the first hall and one of the techies will open a Zoom meeting. In the second hall another laptop will connect to the internet via the tablet we use for the payment system. This laptop could then join the Zoom meeting. Members would use the hall’s audio system for both halls and the projector and a third laptop in the first hall for

Couple’s golden toast TRARALGON Combined Probus members Greg and Joy Millington celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 14 April. They were married on 14th April 1971 at the Register Office in Ballarat. They lived in Ararat and spent three years in New Zealand. The couple have two sons, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Greg and Joy have been living in Traralgon for 40 years and have been members of Probus for five years and have enjoyed many outings with the club. They have done lots of overseas travel and now love caravanning. The club wishes them a very Happy Anniversary from all their friends in Probus. - Andrea Williams

The second laptop in the second hall was connected to a projector to allow members here to view the slideshow. All this connectivity had been pre-tested. The reduced capacity meant that the club would have to introduce a booking system and only those who booked would be allow into the halls. Other members could join the meeting via Zoom. Hooray the meeting was a success!

Feels like always on vacation HOW does living in a resort-style retirement community where you could be democratically elected to a 10-person committee that’s vitally engaged in decision-making – from totally transparent financial decisions to setting the direction for the community – sound? This unique operation and management model is just one of the many advantages that RCA Village’s Wyndham Grange Village offers its residents. As RCA Villages managing director Andrew Philips says, all the residents have to do is simply enjoy living the amazing lifestyle on offer. Mr Philips has no doubt Wyndham Grange Village provides the best value resort-style retirement living close to Melbourne – for many reasons. “Over the past decade, we have become a leader in the retirement living industry in Victoria. “Our ongoing commitment to building excellence enables us to construct beautiful homes for our residents because we believe that a home is much more than a house,” he says. “And while they’re enjoying their new home, we take care of external maintenance – it’s all covered by their service levy. “It’s the kind of place that makes living in the village feel like being on a permanent holiday.” The hub of the village is the Clubhouse, with shared spaces to bring people together to kick back and have fun. There’s an indoor pool and a fully equipped gym
for keeping fit and healthy; a bowling green where visiting grandkids might have a game of barefoot bowls; and a study with computer and WiFi. As well, there’s an arts and crafts room that enables continuance or discovery of a creative hobby; a library – the spot for losing yourself in a book; and a billiard and
games room, a friendly social hub. There’s even a beauty salon to glam up before a special outing in the village bus, along with a workshop for tinkering in, and vegie gardens to nurture the soul. Like all RCA Villages, Wyndham Grange has everything on the doorstep – from
shopping centres and medical centres to renowned attractions in the area. “It’s all about freedom, security, and living life at its best,” Mr Philips says. Wyndham Grange Village, 83 Kulin Drive, Tarneit. Inquiries: 1800 123 131 or www. wyndhamgrange.com.au

Rose City’s 10th birthday THE Benalla Rose City Probus Club celebrated its 10th anniversary on 18 March with a special event at the Benalla Bowls Club. Founder and first president Lock Lidgerwood cut the anniversary cake with the help of the incoming president, Dianne McKinlay. Lock gave the members a brief outline
of the history of the club which was created when the other local Probus Clubs had reached capacity. An ad was placed in the local paper to see if there was any interest in a new Probus Club. About 60 people turned up at that meeting and the Benalla Rose City Probus Club was born. The club has gone from strength

to strength since that day with the membership holding strong and with the members enjoying a vast array of activities ranging from lunches at local wineries to matinees of Melbourne shows and visiting places of interest. The club previously organized a number of overseas trips as well as cruises. Even during the Covid-19 lockdown, the
club was able to retain its members with monthly and sometimes bi-monthly newsletters, keeping members in touch. Clubs experience nature RETIREES certainly know how to enjoy themselves. After not meeting all last year and with little notice of what mischief we could get up to in February, the Pakenham and Pakenham East Probus Clubs joined together for a visit to the Bayles Fauna Park. Following morning tea picnic style, they ventured into the park to see what is happening there. They could see that lots of creatures lived there as they had left evidence, but some were very hard to find. Of course it was the middle of the day, what can one expect? Just the same, there are some geese, who must have got a little too close to one of the emus, thus creating some spectacular displays of wings and dangly unco-ordinated legs on the emu.
The emu seemed to get very upset by the intrusion as it then rushed up and down like something demented. Oh well that is nature on display and worth watching. A short drive to the Royal Hotel at Kooweerup saw the group meeting up with more members, where they all had lunch together along with a lot of laughs which is all part of enjoying each other’s company which we have been missing. There are vacancies for more members at this time, a wonderful way to enrich life during retirement. Probus creates opportunities for Fun, Friendship and Fellowship with like minded people. A lot of varied activities see us enjoying ourselves as often as we are prepared to put our time into. If you would like to make an enquiry please ring Sue Ralph 0439 967 090.
A belated birthday celebration for Drouin Hills ON Friday 5 March 2021, members of the Probus Club of Drouin Hills came together at the Black Tie Restaurant in Warragul to celebrate their first general meeting for over 12 months. As Covid restrictions had prevented an appropriate acknowledgement of the club’s 20th anniversary on 8 December 2020, members, including 22 foundation members, enjoyed a delicious lunch and belatedly shared an anniversary cake.
Foundation members were presented with a special Probus brooch and certificate in appreciation for their commitment to the club over the 20 years. Ian Symons from the Drouin Rotary Club chaired the club’s AGM and welcomed the appointment of new and returning committee members for the 2021 Probus year. He then presented incoming president Trevor Sampson with
a congratulatory certificate from Probus South Pacific Limited. The Club looks forward to a year when members can enjoy fun, friendship and fellowship throughout the year hopefully! Whittlesea history lesson THE 2021 year for the Whittlesea Probus Club began on 1 February in the newly refurbished Whittlesea Bowls Club. The extensions include function rooms with all modern audio and photographic aids. It certainly was an improvement on past years where meetings were held in the dining room with limited access to the aids that assist presenters. An overflow audience attended the first meeting since early last year when Covid restrictions caused cancellation of meetings. Local identity, David Ovenden, was Guest Speaker at the February along with Tanya Gook who was David’s technical assistant. David is a research officer with the Whittlesea Historical Society and a volunteer with associated activities. David grew up in Whittlesea, played music for over 30 years in his local band and worked for The Board of Works, which is now known as Melbourne Water. David’s grandmother Ethel Tack married his grand dad (Harry Ovenden). Ethel was the daughter of Lee Tack and Mary Atkins (Tack) David’s Grandma’s half-brother was Percy Ping, who spent all his life at the Whittlesea Chinese market garden farm started by Lee Tack. David remembered visiting the garden when he was a child. Percy Ping delivered vegetables with his horse and cart and David’s own father had a fruit and vegetable shop in Whittlesea. So much local history just in this one family. David’s wealth of knowledge about the development and history of Whittlesea, along with a comprehensive slide show and recollections of people, and buildings past
David and Tanya were presented with a small memento by Teresa Carlin. They then continued chatting with old and new friends during lunch. and present, held the attention of all in attendance. The first thing to view was photograph of Bears Castle which still stands in the Yan Yean reservoir park. David recalled playing there as a child, and told the story about its origin. An early squatter John Bear had taken up a large holding north of Bendigo, the location of which became known as Bears Lagoon. Mr Bear also had land around Whittlesea and was going north to visit his other holdings. His staff asked what can we do whilst you are gone to which he replied “build me a castle”. David did say that there are other theories. The first settlement of Whittlesea was in 1838 when Thomas Wills purchased 4000 acres in the parish of Toorourong and set
up 27 farms with 27 tenants. The town was named after Surveyor Masons hometown in England but spelt Whittlesey. Streets were named after English natives so we have Fir, Laurel, Oak and others. The last sale of the estate to settle the area was in 1886. There were a number of creeks and rivers below the watershed of Mt Disappointment and these joined the major flow now known as Plenty River. At an area which today is Whittlesea Park the Bruce’s Creek joins the Plenty River which continues on until the conjunction with the Yarra. There were 12000 acres of freehold land along the river flow and (if the tally is right) 5989 farmed animals and 407 human’s waste drained into the Plenty.
Complaints from the town population about the quality of water lead to the major engineering feat that connected the Toorourong and Yan Yean Reservoirs. Today the clear water channels built in the years between 1881 and 1885 can still be seen. These diversions allowed cleaner water to be caught and held in the reservoirs. No matter where man settles churches follow, and the same is applicable to Whittlesea. Thomas Wills donated 15 acres upon which the Church of England was built in 1866. It was preceded by the first, three years earlier, when St Andrews Presbyterian was erected. The first Catholic Church built in 1897 survived until the 1970s when it was given to the Country Fire Authority [CFA]. Those days the CFA set derelict building on fire for honing their skills. Many other buildings in the town succumbed to fire over the formative years. David was interactive with the audience in reminiscing about buildings, and people, including his step grandmother and her oriental genes. Modern residents would be surprised to see the photographs of the 1951 snow storm that left Whittlesea looking like a Christmas card. Also lost to history is the railway connection and the weekend picnic trains. David was giving his address on the very spot where in 1920 a chartered bi-plane advertising the Herald newspapers boys’ magazine “Pals” had landed on its 991 mile barnstorming journey to Longreach (in their pitch to the Government the founders of Qantas indicated that a plane would cover over 50 miles in an hour).
We’re bouncing back THE previous year dominated by Covid-19 caused some sadness and sometimes happiness to all members of Knoxfield Ladies Probus. On St Patrick’s Day, 17 March 2021, Knoxfield Ladies Probians held the AGM with a large attendance, including some most welcomed new members. The meeting was most successful, and full committee member positions declared and filled. President Jan Waters, returned for the coming year as she has done such a wonderful job in the past “odd” year. The full committee was introduced and photos taken.
Probian life member, Joan Nottingham, was presented with her certificate and despite her aversion to having her photo taken, the club managed to capture the moment! Five and 10 year committee member certificates were also presented. Dorothy MacKay was presented with beautiful orchids and our appreciation for her years as welfare officer, now retiring. A special meeting meant special morning tea with cupcakes! AGM entertainment this year was Tango Blue, who sang some old tunes all knew.
On an exciting note - the club is planning many enjoyable and memorable days out for the coming year, all being well! Next meeting will be on 21st of April 2021 at 10am.

30th birthday for Dingley AT the AGM, presiding officer, Rotarian Jenny Dight placed the chain of office onto Ann Kilby, the 31st president of the Dingley Central Probus Club. During the 30th anniversary meeting three foundation members were given the honour of cutting the cake. They are Marj Beverley, Jill Moyle and Ron Breckenridge who have remained active throughout those three decades. Ron was the club’s original treasurer and the late Les Goeby was the inaugural president when 54 members gathered on 11 February, 1991. Ron remembered when he first joined the club saying: “When I rang to join up, Les Goeby asked me what I did for a living before I retired. I said I worked in the ANZ bank. ‘Right-oh you’re treasurer then’ and I hadn’t even met the chap!” Over the 30 years the club has grown to 140 members today enjoying the meetings and varied activities.

Horsham East happily ventures out after Covid FOLLOWING the Covid year that saw so many of Probus activities put on hold, it was with great enthusiasm 38 Horsham East members ventured out on their first trip for the year. Probians and friends travelled to Goroke to view the silos, then on to
Lake Charliegark for morning tea, before travelling on to Kaniva to view another silo before lunch. During the afternoon members visited the Puppet Shop to meet lots of interesting puppets and hear a most informative talk regarding the history of
puppetry. On the return trip home they stopped to admire the aptly named Pink Lake. At the first two meetings for this year members have had the pleasant duty of welcoming ladies into the club as new members and hope both Marilyn(Maz) and Carolyn enjoy many years of friendship.

Grand trek on Ridge ON Monday 15 March at 8am 10 members of the Monash Combined Probus Club and 10 other travellers (friends and members of other Probus clubs) left the Nellie Melba Retirement Village in Wheelers Hill to begin their five day adventure with Chris Grafen on the “Highland Explorer” to The Grand Ridge Road and Wilson’s Promontory area, staying in Yarram. We drove along the Princess Highway stopping at Warragul for morning tea and then left the highway and meandered south via Bull Swamp reaching the start of the Grand Ridge Road east of Mountain View. This famous winding track took us through some spectacular scenery and forest
areas along the ridge of the Strezlecki Ranges. Lunch was at Mirboo North and after passing through Boolarra South, Gunyah and English Corner we left the Grand Ridge Road late afternoon stopping in the rainforest for afternoon tea followed by a short walk through the lush rainforest of the Tarra Valley to view the Cyathea Falls and Tarra Falls. We then drove south to the township of Yarram and to the Ship Inn Motel which would be our home for the next 4 nights and enjoyed a hearty home cooked evening meal in the licensed restaurant. Tuesday was our exciting cruise with Wildlife Coast Cruises leaving from Port Welshpool to sail to the southernmost tip of the Australian mainland. We explored
the east side of Wilson’s Promontory all the way from Port Welshpool to the historic and iconic Wilson’s Promontory Lighthouse and the southernmost tip of the mainland. Here we viewed difficult to access parts of Wilson’s Promontory National and Marine Parks including Refuge Cove, Waterloo Bay, the famous Lighthouse and the enormous and spectacular rock formation of Cleft Island/Skull Rock. Dolphins, seals and shearwaters were abundant at various locations. Lunch was served on board and on our return journey we sailed into Refuge Cove and landed ashore and spent a short time exploring this idyllic little cove. Returning back to Yarram we enjoyed another tasty meal at the motel restaurant.

On day three we headed back to the Strzelecki Ranges to explore the eastern section of the stunningly beautiful TarraBulga National Park. At Balook we met the park ranger at the very interesting Tarra-Bulga Visitors Centre and viewed an impressive audio-visual presentation in the theatrette followed by a picnic lunch in the park. Following lunch we went on a short walk through this most magnificent rain forest to the much-photographed historic suspension bridge and after completing the last section of the Grand Ridge Road we drove up to the highest point in the ranges Mt Tassie and enjoyed wonderful views right across the Latrobe Valley. Leaving this very picturesque area we headed south to the ocean and visited McLoughlin Beach and the serene and very picturesque hamlet of Port Albert which dates back to 1841. Here we enjoyed afternoon tea before viewing the town’s historic buildings and visiting the Maritime Museum. Returning to Yarram we enjoyed a meal at the Commercial Hotel in town. Day four took us further eastward to explore on backroads via Woodside to Seaspray right on a remote section of the Ninety Mile Beach where we stopped for morning tea and a chance to set foot on the famous beach. Traversing the narrow strip of land between Lake Reeve and Bass Strait we drove all the way via Flamingo Beach to Golden Beach and Paradise Beach. From here our journey took us into the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park and all the way to the isolated fishing and boating
village of Loch Sport where we had lunch before exploring further along this narrow peninsular. Heading back to Yarram via Seacombe and Dutson we enjoyed another evening meal at the motel restaurant and joined in one of Chris’ famous singalongs after dinner. A highlight of Chris’s trips. The fifth and final day was another full day of touring. Heading westward this time we visited the stunning 59 metre-high Agnes Falls before driving to Toora and onto Waratah Bay where we enjoyed morning tea and another walk on the beach. We then drove via Tarwin Lower to Inverloch and then along the scenic Bunurong Coastal Drive from Inverloch to Cape Paterson stopping eventually at the Wonthaggi Golf Club for a delicious lunch.
Our homeward trip took us up into the rolling hills via Korrine, Glen Alvie and Krowera onto Loch Village and another stop to explore some of the interesting shops here. Our final stretch to Melbourne took us via Nyora, Lang Lang, Koo Wee Rup and back to Nellie Melba Retirement Village arriving back around 4.30pm after a truly memorable trip packed full of adventure and spectacular scenery. Thanks to Peter Drew, our Tour Manager, for organizing the tour with Chris Grafen and special thanks to Chris - once again you have excelled yourself and created a truly amazing and memorable trip filled with wonderful detailed documentations and stories of the area. - Liz Cawsey

Antarctic stamps leave mark Gabriella Payne A RENOWNED Emerald photographer is featured alongside three fellow artists as part of a new stamp issue by Australia Post. The artists are all previous Antarctic Arts Fellowship recipients and the stamps highlight their separate journeys to the stunning icy landscape. The Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship program, run by the Australian Antarctic Division, was an idea born in 1984 as a way of artistically capturing and sharing the beauty of the frozen continent through a range of different mediums. Over the years, this program has enabled over 70 artists from a wide range of disciplines to make the voyage to Antarctica, with Emerald photographer, David Neilson, being one of them. Mr Neilson, a two-time recipient of the program, has taken some breathtaking images of the frozen land and its wildlife over his two fellowship trips and said it was “an unexpected honour” to have been chosen as one of the featured artists on this new range of stamps. “I feel honoured that I’ve been chosen to essentially represent the photography discipline, as there have been a lot of other photographers who have taken part in the program over the years,” Mr Neilson said. Featured in his internationally recognised book, ‘Southern Light - Images from Antarctica’, Mr Neilson’s work captures stunning icy landscapes and remote penguin rookeries - some of which are featured on this stamp. “It’s a good way of highlighting the fellowships, as they are still continuing,” Mr Neilson said. As well as Mr Neilson, three other artists are featured on the stamps including harpist Alice Giles AM, painter and sculptor John Kelly and sound artist and academic Dr Philip Samartzis, who all had very unique experiences on their trips to Antarctica. This stamp release will help promote the program and encourage all sorts of other artists to apply for this incredible experience, which helps showcase the beauty of the Australian Antarctic Territory. “It’s a pretty remarkable experience,” Mr Neilson said. “I was very fortunate to spend two summers at the Mawson Station,” he said, in which time he was able to capture many rare and inspiring sights.

A huge farewell to Melba Sue Thompson Lilydale and District Historical Society President THIS is a significant year in the life of Australia’s first colonial born international star Dame Nellie Melba. Melba was born on May 19, 1861 - 160 years ago. Her death occurred on February 23, 1931 - 90 years ago. During her illness in Sydney days prior to her death, the press from around the world reported on it in depth. Her death took over the front pages of the newspapers both here and overseas. Melba was a superstar, loved by everyone, young, old, rich and poor. Melba passed away in Sydney but wanted to be buried at Lilydale Cemetery. Her coffin was put in a special train carriage in Sydney and changed trains at Albury. The train was running several hours late when it arrived in Melbourne as it had to stop at every station along the route as people wanted to place their own flowers and pay their respects to the great lady. At Scots Church, the church built by her father David Mitchell, Melba’s coffin laid in state and thousands of mourners slowly walked past. The funeral service was held on 26 February at 1pm and afterwards the cortege drove slowly to Lilydale. Whitehorse Road and Maroondah Highway were lined with people, heads bowed. There was no sound at all. The traffic
was stopped and the only sound Melba’s family heard was the sound of the rubber tyres on the road. At Lilydale, a horse drawn gun carriage waited. Melba’s coffin was transferred to the gun carriage and escorted by troopers and scouts and led by the workers of Cave Hill, Melba journeyed to her final resting place. Even today, the our society is contacted by people from around the world wanting
information on Melba or to visit her grave to pay their respects. Never before or since, has the world media given so much coverage to our town Lilydale. Every article, many photographs featured and recorded Melba’s arrival and departure from our Main Street near the Lilydale Band Rotunda and war memorial. Several years ago our society created the only website in the world dedicated to Dame Nellie Melba. We have just
completed our third upgrade of the site just in time for these special dates in the life of Australia’s greatest international artist. The site is: www.nelliemelbamuseum. com.au Melba was an international opera star but she was first and foremost a proud, down-to-earth Australian. As she wrote in her biography: “If you wish to understand me at all... you must understand first and foremost, that I am Australian.”

Honour for John A MEMBER of the Keilor Combined Probus Club, John Ayers, J.P., has been awarded Fellowship and Life Membership status of the Royal Victorian Justice Association. John was one of only seven recipients to receive this honour, out of a pool of 4000 Justices. John was also recently awarded the Premier’s Volunteer Champion award for
his services at Melbourne Health, Royal Melbourne Hospital. He is very well known in the Keilor/ Niddre area for his many contributions to the community. We all congratulate John on this further recognition of his ongoing work. - Keith Denner, Keilor Probus Club
Fabulous five years ON 10 March 2021 the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club celebrated five years of operation. The meeting was started with a rousing rendition of the Probus Song then the presentation of the five year birthday cake. The first president of the club Linda Athans presented the president Ros Clowes with the five year certificate from PSPL and provided current members with a fascinating account of her year in office learning as she went. After the usual happenings at the annual general meeting the 2021 -22 management committee was presented to members and Ros inducted the new president Terry Norgate.
President Keith Dobson inducts new members Dawn Cooper and Helen McKillop.
Club has big year ahead 2021 HAS seen new beginnings as all Probians looked forward to being together again as a whole after the extremes of 2020, and the restrictions made to help keep us all at arm’s length from the Covid virus. President Keith Dobson (who has volunteered his service for a third term at our club) inducted new members Dawn Cooper and Helen McKillop. Due to 2020 being a non-event, all committee members were more than willing to take up their duties for the 20/21 Annual General Meeting held in March. At Fawkner Merlynston, committee members activated our telephone during 2020, ensuring everyone was contacted on a regular basis with president Beth Jones
making birthday calls to each member on their special day. Our social group has been busy organising activities of interest whilst keeping in mind the current social distancing and Covid safe measurements. First meeting back was just a talkfest with lots of catching up. The March AGM was followed by an indoor bowling competition which was hotly contested by those who participated. Morning coffee and chart groups also commenced in March with a High Tea outing booked for May. We trust that this year will be a more rewarding year for everyone and life can resume with some normality. - Rhonda Hills, Publicity Officer

Grandma’s secrets By Peta Land I am sure that you all know about the chemical time bombs that are sitting in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry and even garage cupboards. Not only do these pose a risk to your health and wellbeing, they are also extremely damaging to the environment. In the days of my Grandma, I remember her house as always being spotless and it smelt so homely and clean. The two main products she used to clean with, to cook with and used as a beauty and health remedy aid, were baking soda and
vinegar. Two natural, safe and harmless (to the environment) products that clean so well you will wonder why you ever bothered with all those toxic and dangerous chemical ones lurking in your cupboards. Not to mention the massive amounts of money you will save on your supermarket shopping. In this exclusive 316-page book “Grandma’s 1001 Uses for Baking Soda and Vinegar”, you’ll find everything you need from health and beauty remedy suggestions to cleaning, gardening and even cooking. It’s a unique collection of Grandma’s traditional remedies and recipes, passed down through the generations.
Simple and easy to follow “Grandma’s 1001 Uses for Baking Soda and Vinegar“, gives you step-by-step instructions on how to mix these two wonder ingredients together or with other common kitchen items including: lemon, sugar, water, salt, honey and laundry powder, just to name a few. All to help aid your health and beauty, to help out in the garden, to help you bake that perfect cake or scones, to clean and deodorise your home, laundry, kitchen, bathroom, garage, pets and so much more! Whether you use baking soda and vinegar on their own or as a combination, this fascinating and unique duo gets a special book all of their own, complete with 1001 uses of these two wonder products.
Alex loving new work with Hepburn House ALESSANDRO ’Alex’ Micheli moved from Florence, Italy 25 years ago, taking up an IT position in Albury, New South Wales. But after 15 years of working as a systems analyst “sitting in an office all day and with very little social contact”, Alex decided to retrain as a personal care worker. Alex then moved to Melbourne for 10 years and then last year, he and his partner decided the time was right to make the move to Daylesford. “We love it here. We used to come here regularly most weekends over the past few years and finally found the property of our dreams and decided it was the right time to make the move.” Alex then found a position with Hepburn House which he says has “a fantastic environment – even compared to the places I worked in Melbourne”. “Hepburn House is the ideal facility just for the way residents are catered for and supported, I haven’t found anywhere like this anywhere else. I have a number of jobs, but I just like the daily interaction with the residents. And it gives me the chance to do something more community-minded.” Alex, who is half Italian and half German, said he still returned often to Italy to catch up with his family although, of course, COVID had stopped visits for a while. He also keeps busy with his love of music having been in a band professionally for many years including in the 80s and 90s back in Europe.
“The band I was part of is called Pankow, a suburb of Berlin, and the band is still active, although I left my role of live performer in 1993 when I moved to Australia. “I was the full-time singer from 1981 to 1993, with the name Alex Spalck. I still write all the songs and record all the albums, I can’t perform live because of the distance.” And does he ever play for the residents of Hepburn House? “Hmm. I don’t think it is really the kind of music that would be appreciated by this age group, but you never know…” To see Alex in action on YouTube, head to www.tlnews.com.au Hepburn House is a government-funded aged care facility that is set in beautiful surrounds and caters for all levels of care, from respite to permanent. Keeping in touch BELGRAVE Probus found the Covid lockdowns and restrictions rather difficult last year. The committee tried a couple of times to run Zoom committee meetings but members didn’t enjoy doing it that way. The club did continue producing the monthly bulletin and making sure all members received a copy, either by email, posted or hand delivered. with
Main contact with all who participated was the weekly walking group at Birdsland Reserve. It was handy as it was within the five kilometre distance for most members during the height of the restrictions. They could social distance with each other and get our exercise and enjoy being with friends in the open air. It is a favourite walking place still and members now enjoy morning tea together each week after the walk.

Pots of colour Danielle Kutchel IT’S official: your indoor plant collection is actually good for your health, in a number of ways. Here’s why - and which plants to choose for the biggest benefits! They make us feel good We all know how good we feel after a wander in the garden. Setting up house plants helps to replicate that feeling indoors. And that good feeling? It’s the reduction in stress that you feel while gazing into the greenery. Plants can help us feel calmer and more relaxed, so they’re perfect for places like the study while working from home. More technically, studies have shown that plants like palms can regulate the humidity in a room, and this can help you feel more comfortable and productive. They absorb nasties A NASA-run Clean Air Study discovered that there are a number of plants that can remove toxins from the air, keeping it clean for us to breathe - great for those with allergies! Snake plant, also known cheekily as mother-in-law’s tongue, is one that can help in this regard. Snake plant is a striking indoor specimen with long, stiff leaves. It absorbs carbon dioxide while emitting oxygen, like all plants do - but interestingly, it’s one of the few plants that does this at night, making it a good choice for a bedroom plant. It removes formaldehyde and benzene from the air too. Spider plant, another common and easy-to-grow variety, has the same special talents and looks good amongst many types of d’cor. They can heal hurts Take a look through your bathroom cupboard and it’s likely you’ll find bottles of

There’s good reason for that aloe has been used as a natural remedy for a number of different issues for thousands of years. It’s particularly useful for sunburn; simply snap off a leaf and let the gel that’s inside ooze onto your skin (get the OK from your doctor first). Boiling the leaves and breathing in the steam it emits can also provide relief for those with asthma. They freshen the air It’s always nice to come home to a cleansmelling home. Put down the artificial air freshener and get that clean scent naturally with house plants! There are a couple that are particularly good. Rosemary, often grown outside as hedging or an ornamental, can also be grown inside if looked after correctly. Typically this plant needs full sun, so be sure to keep it in a sunny place and acclimatise it to the reduced sunlight. It smells deliciously inviting and is an excellent addition to many dishes. Similarly, dwarf citrus trees can be used to lightly perfume the air, naturally. Confused about where to start? Your local nursery can help! Autumn planting guide: Plan now for spring meals Danielle Kutchel THE days are getting a little shorter now, and cooler days are ahead. With that in mind, what should you be planting in the garden this season? We’ve got the tips you need to have a thriving veggie patch well into the season. 1. Think of what’s to come Traditionally, you should plant winter veg over the autumn months of March, April and May. Think classic brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and the veg-du-jour, kale. All of these are simple to grow and don’t take much looking after. Make sure they have around six hours of sunlight during the day - they’ll grow quicker if they get more sun but they do tolerate shade as well. Also try planting beans and peas - these will be ready for harvesting in spring for those delicious warmer-weather salads. They grow quickly, but remember to provide them with a support, like a trellis, to climb up as they stretch their little limbs. 2. Think of what you want to eat now Leafy greens are ideal if you want something you can eat over autumn as they don’t take long to grow from seedlings. Plus, they’re versatile and can be eaten in many ways (spinach 28 The Victorian Probian – Monday, 19 April, 2021
Autumn is the time to plant brassicas like broccoli. and feta pies, rainbow chard with garlic and lemon, an easy salad with lettuce and the last of the summer tomatoes...) 3. Think of how to grow them With wetter weather on the way, you won’t need to worry too much about intensive watering programs - but that doesn’t mean you can neglect your garden! Remember to keep up the usual supports so your plants continue to grow strongly. Invest in a liquid fertiliser like Seasol to provide essential nutrients. Ensure your patch is well-prepared by enriching the soil with manure and compost. Fill around plants with mulch to keep moisture in and provide even more beneficial nutrients.
Lettuces grow quickly to a size for harvesting.

Tania Phillips QUICK, decadent and delicious - mug cakes are all the rage at the moment and with farmers expecting a bumper year for passionfruit - this little gem will also be economical.
90 SECOND PASSIONFRUIT MUG CAKE Ingredients
· 2 tbsp (30g) unsalted butter · 1 tsp vegetable or canola oil juicy passionfruit, halved, plus extra to serve if · 1desired - I always do! · 1/2 tsp vanilla extract · 1 egg yolk
1. Place butter in mug - melt in microwave (15 - 20 sec). 2. Add oil, passionfruit pulp, vanilla extract & yolk, mix with a fork. 3. Add sugar, flour and baking powder, mix until combined. Stir in chocolate chips. 4. Microwave for 1 1/2 minutes or until top is just set and skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean - it overcooks quickly, so it’s better to take it out slightly early and pop back in for 10 sec increments if needed. 5. Life for a club champion IT’S like spring has sprung again after a long dark winter at Bentleigh Probus Club and the club has wasted no time in cranking up its activities. There is a feeling of renewed enthusiasm in the air as was evident at a recent successful lunch at Mulgrave Country Club. Members thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with old friends and look forward to the many planned activities in the months ahead, especially the upcoming bus trip to the Dolphin Research Centre, Hastings in May. The fact that a planned stop at The
Chocolate Grove at Carrum Downs may be an added incentive! A highlight of the AGM in March was the conferring of life membership on Alan Ambrose. Alan has been a club member for 21 years and has held numerous positions within the club including the presidency in 2007-08. He currently produces a very professional monthly newsletter and did so consistently during last year’s lockdown. There may not have been much news but there was always the jokes! With his trusty sidekick, fellow life member and long time hardworking secretary, Colin Richards,
New president John Connolly, outgoing president Alan Burns (2019-21) secretary Colin Richards and new life member Alan Ambrose. 233667 they kept the club ticking over during that dark period. For now it’s onwards and upwards. Bentleigh Probus Club is a mixed club that meets monthly at The Bentleigh RSL
Club, Centre Rd, Bentleigh on the second Thursday of each month. New members are most welcome. For information, contact membership secretary Jenny Martin on 0431180182 or email jennymartinemail@ gmail.com

Wine appreciation MOOROOLBARK’S wine appreciation group enjoyed its first outing for the year on a lovely summer’s day at Yering Farm Winery.

THE Buttercups Gardening Group from the Heathmont Ladies Probus Club took a day trip to King Lake for lunch at the Song Bird Cafe and to visit the Antique Perennial Gardens. Lunch was at the Song Bird Cafe. Staff made members most welcome with their hospitality and lovely food and then were met by Matt at Antique Perennials who showed them through some of the wholesale nursery, explained the history including losing their homes in the 2009
fires and the subsequent rebuilding of their business. Matt and his two red heelers accompanied the group through the display garden, answering questions and talking about the different species of perennials. They were all enchanted with the many species of plants and the blend of textures and colours. Many a car boot was full of pots.

At “Arctic Journey”, Ventnor.
Wanderers at Phillip Island Ken Heaslip THE proposed Event No. 39 of the Probian Wanderers has ended in a “non-event”. Of a ‘shaky’ 42 original entries, only eight subsequently arrived. Unfortunately, we became victims of “Covid-19 Lockdown”. Potential starters were faced with the decision to be freed of lockdown in time to attend, or risk losing their deposits. The hardy few successfully risked the former, and enjoyed some four days of freedom, exploration of some of the Island’s treasures, and most pleasant company. Attendees found the Big4 Holiday Park (Newhaven) ideally situated, with pleasant surroundings, and a most friendly staff. So much so that they have elected to return in February, 2022. An ‘electronic’ vote of two Phillip Island venues ensued, resulting in an almost unanimous vote to defy a further ‘lockdown’ and try again for Big4 Newhaven, which would now become Event No. 40. To clarify any confusion in relation to event numbering, this Covid-19 business has seen Phillip Island Event, originally No. 39, and Mansfield No. 40. Then Mansfield, through that dreaded ‘Lockdown’, has become No 39, and Phillip Island No. 40. Now that the situation has been clarified….er!!!

The Motorist is situated at 77 Main Street, Gembrook.

Driving detour through time Taylah Eastwell GEMBROOK is known for being the last stop along the iconic Puffing Billy Railway. But hidden behind the steam clouds of the historic train lies vintage car museum The Motorist, a one of a kind experience that is bound to get your heart (and mind) racing. With its rustic shopfront, walls plastered with signs and posters reminiscent of the last century and a vintage car in every nook and cranny, the museum is jam-packed with passion for hobby motoring. And that’s exactly what owner David Peck intended The Motorist to be – a place for the general public to visit and learn, in hopes that it may spark an interest in joining the hobby car scene. “I open as a gesture to the movement of hobby motoring so that people can learn about cars, and also as an asset to Gembrook,” Mr Peck said. Mr Peck has owned The Motorist for about 20 years, and rather than using the space to show off his impressive collection of over 20 classic cars, he has opted to include educational displays throughout the museum. Visitors can see how an engine, clutch and gearbox work inside a car by turning a handle on a real engine and witnessing how things move.
They can also see how a vehicle’s tailshaft and differential work mechanically to allow wheels to turn, with Mr Peck more than willing to explain the concepts to those interested. “My displays allow me to show people who have no mechanical knowledge at all how an engine works,” Mr Peck said. The shelves that line the side wall of the museum hold a range of antique car parts with explanation sheets on each, allowing visitors to learn how a starter motor starts an engine, how petrol is mixed with air to power a car and how wooden spoke wheels were made and pieced together. The Motorist is intended to be a display of vehicles before, during and after restoration as well as a place of learning, and has come a long way from its origins as an old service station in the 1920’s. Pointing to a framed black and white newspaper cut out, Mr Peck explains that the original building burnt down in a devastating fire in 1950. As a tribute to the former site, Mr Peck has recreated the original shopfront at the rear of the museum, which is a hit amongst groups that book the museum and enjoy the back yard area for lunch. On closer examination of the newspaper articles, it becomes clear that the cars burnt in the newspaper photographs of the original 1920’s garage are of the same era as those now housed in The Motorist’s collection.

David with the only 1925 Studebaker Special Six chauffeur driven Limousine in the world.
important dates to remember JUNE/JULY APRIL/MAY 2021 EDITION Club News 28 26 News supplied suppliedby byFriday, Friday,May March To The Probian Editor, Star News Group. Mr Pecks recreation of the original 1920’s shopfront of the service station that stood where The Motorist is now situated. In addition to the Chevrolet bus, London Taxi, Roll’s Royces, the 1960s Royal Enfield motorcycle and Mr Peck’s 1970s “daily” motorcycle parked out the front, the centrepiece of the collection is the world’s only 1925 Studebaker Special Six limousine with a polished brass body. “They made lots of 1925 Special Sixes but what makes this totally unique is the body. It has extra seats in the back and a glass division between the driver and the rear so it is a chauffer driven car. The whole body is made out of solid brass. I restored it 35 years ago,” Mr Peck explained. As he flicks through a thick binded folder full of photographs of vintage cars he has personally owned, Mr Peck explains that The Motorist is not a business to him, but more of a “hobby gone crazy”. Reminiscing of himself as a 16 year old boy in London, Mr Peck explains that his passion for quality English cars blossomed when he
was helping a friend wash the cars of the wealthy as a schoolboy who could only dream of owning one. “The only people in those days who could afford to get their car washed had nice cars. So the sorts of cars I now own are the sorts of cars I was washing,” he laughs. It’s this passion for hobby motoring that inspired The Motorist to be the museum it is today, giving visitors the chance to learn firsthand how cars actually work and the opportunity to spark their own interest in the heritage motoring movement. The Motorist is open Thursday to Sunday from 11am until 3pm. Entry is through the lolly and ice cream shop out the front. Mr Peck also takes visitors and groups on tours of the museum by appointment, which should be made in advance to ensure he is not out motoring. Call 0411 465 098.
