All the fun of the fete

235457_09

The weather gods will be smiling on the St David’s Uniting Church fete tomorrow. Sunny conditions and temperatures into the mid-20s are forecast for the Newtown church’s annual fundraiser. Alison Lawson said the committee decided to hold some of the fete outside to comply with COVID protocols, and that the weather forecast was “looking good”. “People are more cautious with COVID so we decided to hold some of it outside,” she said. “It’s not a huge fete, just an opportunity for fellowship and a social time to get people together.” Youngsters from Impetus Dance will entertain the crowd with a dance display at 10.30am. The usual stalls, trash and treasure, books, sausage sizzle and coffee van will be operating. The fete begins at 10am at St David’s Uniting Church, corner of Aphrasia and Talbot streets, Newtown. Racetrack ‘worst in state’ By Justin Flynn The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds (CPG) has labelled Geelong greyhound racetrack as “the worst in Victoria” after the third death of a dog at the venue this year. In Australia, 54 greyhounds have died while on tracks this year –14 of them in Victoria. Geelong is equal-deadliest with other tracks across the country that have notched up three deaths: Albion Park (Queensland), and Maitland, Richmond and Wagga Wagga (all NSW). CPG national president Dennis Anderson said Geelong’s track was oval in shape, which contributed to young greyhound Sylvie Bale colliding with another dog at the first turn and falling, sustaining a fractured elbow on April

23. She was euthanased by the on-track vet. Deaths and injuries in greyhound racing are more frequent at the track turns, CPG said. In 39 race meetings this year, Geelong has seen three deaths and 94 injuries, including 13 major injuries. Zed Bale died on January 2 and Finding Gobi on February 9; both were euthanased with broken forelegs. In 2020, Geelong recorded a total of six deaths and 249 injuries. “Like most greyhounds that die at the tracks, she (Sylvie Bale) fell at a turn after colliding with other dogs, and was euthanased with a broken leg,” Mr Anderson said. “Racing on a straight track will drastically reduce deaths and injuries. It won’t eliminate them, but it will reduce them.”

Mr Anderson said Healesville is the only greyhound racing venue in Victoria with a straight track. There have been no deaths there this year, according to CPG. CPG is also calling on Greyhound Racing Victoria to reduce all race starters to six. Racing industry research in 2017 showed six-dog races cut death and injury rates by 50 per cent. “The only way to stop the suffering of these beautiful dogs is to ban greyhound racing,” Mr Anderson said. “Until that happens, the industry should act on what its own research recommended in 2017, that six-dog races and straight tracks are safer alternatives.” A Greyhound Racing Victoria spokesperson told the Independent that “the loss of a greyhound is distressing for all concerned” and that the organisation had a long-term plan to

make tracks safer. “All track deaths are investigated and GRV is committed to ensuring greyhounds race on the safest tracks possible,” the spokesperson said. “GRV introduced the Greyhound Recovery Initiative in December 2016, which provides financial support for treatment of greyhounds seriously injured at a race meeting. “GRV has a long-term strategy to make our tracks safer and we are collaborating with Professor David Eager from [University of Technology Sydney] to develop a scientific underpinning for safe racing. “GRV has used this approach to rebuild the Horsham track and in the current rebuilding of the Traralgon track. “Any changes we make at other tracks will be based on sound research and scientific evidence.”

Geelong Refinery Update Dear neighbours, Welcome to our Autumn community newsletter. Viva Energy has had an exciting few months – from the announcement of our strategic alliance with hydrogen vehicle manufacturer HYZON Motors, to the refinery’s role in the production of recycled plastic wrappers for KitKats – it is clear we are keeping our focus on the future. It has also been pleasing to see continued progress on the Environmental Effects Statement (EES), which is a key step in our journey towards approval for the development of Viva Energy’s proposed Gas Terminal. In March, the Australian gas market operator AEMO confirmed that Victorian gas production is declining and more gas will be required in future to heat our homes, for cooking and for hot water. With the help of our new terminal, Viva Energy is well positioned to deliver this gas, while also delivering significant economic benefits to Geelong and Victoria. The gas terminal project will create new jobs for Geelong while diversifying the refinery’s income stream. It will help to secure the future of our refinery, support more than 700 jobs and contribute additional economic benefits to the region. Regards, Dale Cooper EXECUTIVE GENERAL MANAGER – REFINING

Viva Energy and HYZON Motors in strategic alliance HYZON and Viva Energy have announced a strategic alliance to introduce and grow hydrogen as a fuel solution for transport here in Geelong. HYZON is a world leader in the development of hydrogen fuel cell powered trucks and buses. HYZON’s fuel cell technology has been validated as the highest power density fuel cell stack in the world by third parting testing, making it ideally suited to power trucks and buses over long distances on Australian roads. Viva Energy and HYZON intend to work together, providing clients with zeroemission hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles and hydrogen refuelling solutions. Our alliance can provide customers a pathway to zero-emission transport, in an environment where HYZON can provide the vehicles and Viva Energy the hydrogen-refueling solutions.

2 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 30 April, 2021

Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt said: “By working closely with HYZON which is experienced at developing vehicles for markets worldwide, we can develop an entire hydrogen transport solution – which can move us past the traditional roadblocks to establishing a hydrogen refuelling network, by getting hydrogen fuel cell vehicles on the road to provide the demand.” “In addition to our Gas Terminal project, this alliance helps us accelerate our Geelong Energy Hub vision through the development of hydrogen for transport and working with our existing partners and customers in providing this solution,” he said. HYZON Motors CEO Craig Knight said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Viva Energy, one of Australia’s largest energy companies, to drive the hydrogen mobility sector forward, with a focus on establishing Victoria and Geelong in particular, as leading hydrogen transport hubs.”

Viva Energy’s Gas Terminal Project Viva Energy is seeking approval to develop a new Gas Terminal at the Geelong Refinery. The Gas Terminal will bring in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) by ship to boost natural gas supply in South East Australia ahead of projected shortages. The Gas Terminal is at the centre of Viva Energy’s plan to transform the Geelong Refinery into a visionary Energy Hub to support Victoria’s evolving energy needs.

The Viva Energy Gas Terminal Project Includes: Floating Gas Terminal

A sweet success

A vessel which stores LNG and converts it back into natural gas.

Viva Energy has joined forces with a number of other Australian manufacturers in a project aimed to reduce the amount of plastic food wrappers and other soft plastics that end up in landfill.

Refinery Pier Extension To accommodate the LNG ships and moor the Floating Gas Terminal, the existing pier will be extended by approximately 570m. To allow the ships to berth and turn, some localised dredging will be required.

Treatment Facility

Our Refinery in Geelong played a crucial part in the pilot program which was led by Australian food manufacturer Nestlé and involved the recycling of soft plastics into new KitKat wrappers.

To meet Australian gas specifications, all of the gas entering the Terminal will go through the treatment facility located within the refinery boundary. Through this process, an odorant will be added to the gas to give it a distinctive smell.

New Pipeline Approximately 6.5kms of pipeline will be constructed to transport the gas. About 2.5km of the pipeline will be above ground and located on the pier and refinery land. About 4km will be underground and within existing pipeline corridors.

What is natural gas?

How will the gas be used?

Natural gas is a naturally occurring gas consisting mainly of methane.

Gas is a source of energy for heating, cooking, electricity generation, manufacturing and industry.

What is LNG?

Each year Victoria uses about 200 peta joules of gas which is about 18% of Australia’s consumption.

LNG or liquefied natural gas is a natural gas in its liquid form. The gas is converted into a liquid form through a cooling process. In a liquid form it can be transported more easily to where it is needed. Then through heating, it is converted back to a gas and used.

Our Gas Terminal Project is being assessed from an environmental perspective through the Environment Effects Statement (ESS). It is a rigorous environmental assessment process. This will include a range of studies into topics including marine environment and water; waste; biodiversity; energy efficiency; security; affordability; safety; cultural heritage; social; economic; amenity and land use. The matters to be investigated and documented in the EES are set out in the scoping requirements issued by

It is forecast that there could be gas shortages in south east Australia by winter 2023.

the Victorian Minister for Planning. These are currently in draft for public comment until the until 17 May 2021 and available at https://www.planning.vic.gov.au/environmentassessment/browse-projects Over the coming months, we will be working on the studies and will update you as this work proceeds. Subject to the relevant approvals, we would look to construct the terminal in 2022/23, with the terminal being fully operational by 2024

Comment on the draft scoping requirements of our EES As part of our EES we will be undertaking a range of studies and investigations. We will consider topics such as marine environment and water; waste; biodiversity; energy efficiency; security; affordability; safety; cultural heritage; social; economic; amenity and land use. The draft scope of this work is available for your comment until 17 May 2021 at https://www.planning.vic.gov.au/ environmentassessment/browse-projects/

The process involved the collection of soft plastic waste which was converted into liquid Plasticrude – a synthetic crude oil consisting of 100% recycled plastic – which was fed into the refinery’s processing units and turned into the feedstock used by our neighbours LyondellBasell to produce foodgrade plastics. Viva Energy is excited to have played a role in this innovative project, which demonstrated that the Refinery can be a player in Australia’s circular economy. It shows that our critical infrastructure also has potential relevance that extends beyond its current role in producing the liquid fuels that keep this country moving.

Council tips in missing pool cash By Justin Flynn Surf Coast Shire has tipped in a further $500,000 to help fund the establishment of the $39.25 million Surf Coast Aquatic and Health Centre in Torquay. The shire had already committed $5.25 million but will borrow an extra $500,000 for the project to be delivered. The centre will house a community health, fitness and wellbeing centre with an indoor 50-metre heated pool, multi-purpose warm water pool, gym and multi-purpose program rooms, allied

health suites and community meeting spaces. “I am proud that we have made this historic decision and excited by what the aquatic and health centre will bring to our community,” mayor Libby Stapleton said. “In making their decision councillors acknowledged that funding commitments already in place from the Australian and Victorian governments presented an opportunity too good to be missed. “Council had already resolved on the site, the scope and made a significant commitment of land, cash and borrowings. This decision

to provide the last piece of the funding puzzle enables this wonderful project to go ahead for the benefit of people of all ages and abilities across generations. “We considered our options to seek further external funding but are realistic that our funding partners have already been generous and that further grants are unlikely, and further delays are unhelpful for everyone.” The extra $500,000 will lift council’s total available borrowings for the project to $4.75 million and add $27,000 in estimated annual debt servicing costs.

Meanwhile, a new 50-metre outdoor pool for the north Bellarine is a major step closer after the City of Greater Geelong endorsed concept plans for the facility and put forward funding in its draft 2021-22 budget. In response to community feedback seeking further aquatic facilities at the site, councillors also resolved to advocate for funding for a future stage two of the project. The pool will be built at Drysdale Sporting Precinct, with council allocating $1.5 million for the facility in 2021-22, with a further $2.75 million projected in forward planning for 2022-23.

Pawsome fundraiser Paws were tapping and tails were wagging in Geelong on Wednesday as Paws4Kids raised more than $250,000 to bring MacKillop Family Services’ innovative therapy dog program to the city. MacKillop’s Paw Pals program uses therapy dogs to help vulnerable children who have stopped going to school, or are at risk of disengaging from education, to manage their emotions and behaviour, improve their confidence and reconnect with their education. Many of these children struggle because they are dealing with tough issues beyond the school gates: family violence, neglect, living out of home, disability, or social and emotional challenges. Paw Pals has been operating in Melbourne for three years. To support the expansion of the program to Geelong, a matched giving fundraising day, called Paws4Kids, was held on Wednesday,

with every dollar donated to Paws4Kids automatically tripled by matching partners. The original goal of $250,000 was reached at noon on Wednesday and was revised to a goal of $370,000. Geelong foster carer Rachael Buck, who is also a school principal, understands how difficult it can be for children who are dealing with trauma to be in the right mindset to engage in education. “Children often come into foster care feeling concerned and apprehensive and it can take a while for them to begin to trust,” she said. “It is wonderful to think that kids here in Geelong will soon have access to the therapy dogs and I hope Paws4Kids reaches the fundraising target so the program can launch in this region.” Josh Bond and Matthew Reynolds with therapy dog Indie. Parking fees set to increase Car parking charges will increase throughout much of Geelong as part of the City of Greater Geelong’s draft 2021-22 budget. On-street parking will increase from $3.10 to $3.20 per hour and daily parking at Haymarket will increase from $13.50 to $13.70. A Haymarket monthly permit will increase by 10 per cent to $2728. Parking fines will increase from $83 to $85. Commercial fees are being frozen in areas such as swim, sport and leisure centres, community fair play seasonal hire, golf, community halls, Breamlea Caravan Park and

the National Wool Museum. Full dog and cat registrations are still $195 and $149 respectively. The draft budget papers forecast a deficit of $7.9 million in 2021-22, down from $19.7 million this financial year. The council expects the budget to return to surplus in 2022-23. Finance portfolio chair, Anthony Aitken, said the council had faced significant challenges when setting its budget. “Two of the major challenging areas are that last year’s COVID-19 recovery budget caused the city to operate with a major deficit, and

a second challenge is ageing infrastructure across the whole municipality,” Cr Aitken said. “Over the next four years we are investing heavily in renewing assets in the city from Anakie to Grovedale, from St Leonards to Ocean Grove and reducing the asset renewal gap, while investing in our new communities like Armstrong Creek. “This is a budget that repairs the city’s financial position with a commitment to return to surplus and shares asset renewal and investment across the whole municipality.” The proposed budget’s capital works

program will invest $379 million in roads, footpaths, kerbs, channels and drains and land acquisitions. The proposed budget has allocated $5.3 million to LED street lighting and smart controls, $3.2 million towards a digital modernisation program and $1.725 million to the shared trails master plan. Rates will rise by an average of 1.5 per cent and will net council $269.5 million. An average household can expect to pay $1334.75 next financial year, excluding waste collections services, which will cost $360.95.

On a roll to fight cancer Torquay brown belt Ryan Gibson will grapple for 12 hours straight to fight cancer in honour of his grandfather and former Indonesian Secretary of State Djohan Effendi. “My grandpa was an amazing man and influential in my upbringing,” the 22-year-old said. Mr Effendi rose to the third-highest position in Indonesian politics after surviving childhood poverty. “He grew up with no dad – his mum would have had to work so much,” Gibson said. “He brought himself up in a third world country and he was so hungry for knowledge, but so humble at the same time.” After retiring from public life, Mr Effendi moved to Geelong where he later died of myeloma – a type of blood cancer – at age 78 in 2017. In honour of his grandfather, Gibson will use 14 years of martial arts experience to help

prevent others losing someone to cancer. Gibson will spar opponent after opponent for 12 consecutive hours, showcasing Jiu Jitsu moves and training drills, in his Roll against Cancer. He has been training several times a week at his South Geelong club, DC Jiu Jitsu, in preparation for the martial arts marathon. “I’m taking this very seriously – it’s like a little training camp,” he said. “I want to absolutely kill this.” Gibson will livestream his progress beginning at 8am on June 6, and is searching for sponsors to help him raise funds for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. The foundation supports Australian researchers developing new methods to prevent, detect and treat cancer. “I want to help as many people as I can,” Gibson said. Shire to become carbon neutral Surf Coast shire will become a certified carbon neutral organisation by June 30, 2022. Councillors adopted the draft 2021-22 budget at Tuesday’s council meeting, which includes plans to make the shire carbon neutral by the end of the 2021-22 financial year through the federal government’s Climate Active Program. “Accredited carbon offsets will be purchased to offset emissions from operations, services, facilities and work processes,” mayor Libby Stapleton said. “The cost of carbon offsets will partly be

funded from landfill gate fees. We will continue taking action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, with the remaining residual emissions being offset. Other investments in the draft budget that support the environment are the continued funding of council’s Towards Environmental Leadership Program, preparing the next section of the Anglesea Landfill, and further work to transition council buildings to the use of renewable energy. Cr Stapleton said council will continue to

upgrade buildings to ensure they are accessible for everyone, introduce a trial of Auslan at council meetings and events, continue its commitment to the Anglesea Arts Space and fund more public art in the shire. “This year we will also establish a role to help council to improve its engagement with traditional owners and support reconciliation,” she said. Providing community infrastructure is a key theme of the draft budget, with a $28 million spend on capital works.

Just over half of this ($14.5 million) will be spent on new projects such as the Anglesea Netball Pavilion redevelopment (subject to a successful grant), renewal of Anglesea’s Coogoorah Park boardwalk, and works to support future activity at the former Winchelsea Shire Hall. The draft budget also includes funding for projects that are already under way, such as the Stribling Reserve Pavilions redevelopment in Lorne and the Grant Pavilion extension in Torquay.

Bring your family to town Zach Tuohy is probably more at home patrolling the defensive arc at GMHBA Stadium than in front of a camera. But the Irish-born Geelong footballer has starred in the latest tourism campaign for Geelong and the Bellarine, created by local marketing agency, Ruck. Rolling out across social media, cinema and exclusive Geelong Cats channels, including the match day big screen, the advertisement makes a playful nod to Tuohy’s dilemma of not being able to show his family around his adopted hometown due to the pandemic. Instead, it encourages Geelong locals to invite friends and family who are closer to home to visit the region. The campaign features the quirky star defender trying his best to enjoy some of Geelong’s best tourist offerings – alone. “With the domestic market being our only source of visitation at the moment, the visiting friends and relatives market is a critical one,”

Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine executive director Brett Ince said. “We needed a way to encourage our local community to invite their loved ones to explore the region. This partnership with the Geelong Football Club is a great way to grab the hearts and minds of locals and get them thinking about hosting visitors.” Ruck Agency director Lach Ryan said Tuohy was the first player that came to mind when planning the video. “Using a Cats’ player to be the face of local advertising isn’t new or different – but it works,” he said. “As a single-team town, the Geelong community really take notice when their players are promoting something. “Zach was the first player we thought of – and writing the script to emphasise his Irish accent was a lot of fun.” Watch the video at youtu.be/s8ggG5AjB9s Geelong Cats star Zach Tuohy at The Carousel on the waterfront … by himself. West Melbourne and Geelong residents protested at Corio MP Richard Marles’ office on Wednesday to call on him to ‘Fund Our Futures, Not Gas’. Members of the Pacific Climate Warriors Victoria and 350 West Melbourne groups created a chalk mural on the pavement outside Mr Marles’ office in Geelong, depicting the impacts of climate change. The group also delivered the results of community consultation that found the majority of Corio constituents want to see funding for renewable energy and climate solutions, not new gas projects.

Marathon effort for kids By Luke Voogt Most people would struggle to run one marathon, let alone seven in seven days. But that’s exactly what Hamlyn Height’s Richie Egan plans to do next month in a bid to help Australia’s most vulnerable children. The 21-year-old will take on seven Queensland marathons, from the Gold Coast to Cairns, in the Bravehearts 777 beginning June 28. The army reservist, who is studying a diploma of sport and working part-time, is on a quest to run 100 marathons in a decade.

’’

He first ran 42 kilometres as a “bucket list tick” in year 12, completing the Melbourne Marathon in three hours and 36 minutes. “Funnily enough, Dad and I ran the event in the exact same time, albeit 30 years apart,” he said. “I remember about 32 kilometre mark – which is when it gets really hard – thinking ’I’m never doing this again’. “But you quickly forget the pain, and then you’re hooked.” He decided to chase the century, ironically, during a check-up for a healing stress fracture in his foot after his third marathon. “It didn’t hamper me,” he said. “I said to my doctor, I think the word I used was premonition, that this was something I was going to do.” Richie completed his 13th marathon in Canberra a fortnight ago in an impressive two hours and 46 minutes.

He has raised more than $9000 for Bravehearts’ sexual assault prevention and support programs as he prepares to surpass the 20 mark in one week. “They do great work protecting kids,” he

said. “I think it’s a great cause and it’s a great challenge for me.” To donate: fundraise.bravehearts.org.au/ fundraisers/richardegan/777-marathon-2021national

Avalon hub overlooked The state government has overlooked Avalon Airport as the site for a Victorian COVID-19 quarantine hub. Acting Premier James Merlino announced yesterday that the state government’s first choice was to build the 500-bed hub on Donnybrook Road, Mickleham, in Melbourne’s north. Mr Merlino said the centre, which will provide an alternative to hotel quarantine, would cost around $200 million to construct and would be built next to an existing federal animal quarantine facility. The master plan for the new hub includes dedicated onsite services that will support strong infection control and prevention measures. The hub will be able to be increased to 3000 beds if a larger facility is needed in the future. The state government is set to begin negotiating funding for the project with the federal government. However, Mr Merlino said that if the federal government turns down the idea of building the quarantine hub in Mickleham, Avalon was the second choice for the facility to be located. In February, Avalon Airport released an announcement which said: “We welcome the premier’s announcement today that Avalon Airport is under consideration to house an isolated purpose-built quarantine facility. “We are keen to assist where we can during this crisis, and our proposal is an offer in the hope that we can help find a solution for people returning to Australia.”

Northern hub project in doubt Northern Aquatic and Community Hub remains in doubt due to a shortfall of government funding. Six years after the precinct masterplan was completed and more than three years since Norlane’s landmark water slides on Melbourne Road were demolished, there is still no certainty about the future of the promised $61.5 million redevelopment of Waterworld and surrounds into a vibrant hub for state-of-the-art health, fitness, leisure, arts and community facilities. Next month’s state budget is looming as the final make-or-break opportunity to obtain the funds needed to give the green light to this potentially transformational project for Geelong’s north. With one third of the required funding allocated by the City of Greater Geelong and a recent federal government commitment of $8.2 million, more than half the estimated cost remains unfunded. The Andrews government deserves great credit for delivering stage one of the masterplan with last year’s opening of Barwon Health North. But without stage two – replacing the ageing Waterworld and Centenary Hall with a modern aquatic centre and gymnasium (including new water slides), a new 450-seat theatre and a range of community spaces – the vision of improved health, wellbeing and quality of life will not be realised and the northern suburbs will miss out once again. The Torquay and North Bellarine communities have recently won government support for new aquatic centres by making their voice heard. The Norlane and Corio communities are urged to also find their voice and demonstrate their support for the Northern Aquatic and Community Hub. A group of concerned residents is contacting organisations and individuals to increase

awareness of what’s at stake and rally community support for the project. To find out more, contact Sandra Anderson on 0419 586 962 or David Withington on 0419 376 175. It’s time to stand up and fight for a fair share for the north. Sandra Anderson, Norlane David Withington, Lara

Money flushed down toilet Regarding ‘Dunny delay in $200,000 blowout’ (April16). Council closed the toilets in May 2000 for a $130,000 refurbishment to include a sensitively-styled roofing. I called for council to demolish the toilets but a council spokesman said to demolish and build new unisex toilets would cost $300,000. Council decided $460,000 in 2019 budget for new ground level toilets (now $660,000). For the past 20 years, labour, vandalism, cleaning have cost $200 per week. Council could have built the toilets in 2000, saving $360,000 on unit, [plus] works of $130,000 not carried out in year 2000, plus $208,000 on vandalism etcetera. Therefore, $698,000 has been flushed down the toilet.

PROPOSED

COUNCIL BUDGET 2021–22 02-CI300421-INDY-RIGHT

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR, CR STEPHANIE ASHER The Council has released two important documents for community feedback: our new four-year strategic blueprint – ‘Our Community Plan 2021-25’ – and our Proposed Budget 2021-22. Our Community Plan 2021-25 has been developed with extensive help from the Greater Geelong community, including a survey and a series of workshops. It sets out what the City of Greater Geelong will aim to achieve during the current Council term, and aims to steer us closer to the community’s 30-year vision for a clever and creative future. The plan contains four key strategic priorities that will guide our decision-making and investment over the next four years:

1. Healthy, caring and inclusive community 2. Sustainable growth and environment 3. Strong local economy 4. High-performing council and organisation Our Proposed Budget for 2021-22 has been developed in line with these priorities, and seeks to strike the right balance between fiscal responsibility and continuing to invest in services and facilities across the region. : Developed off the back of the most challenging year in living memory (financially and socially), this budget proposes another record year of investment in capital infrastructure to help drive our region’s COVID-19 recovery.

At the same time, having acknowledged that ongoing large deficits will not be sustainable, we have worked hard to reduce this year’s deficit significantly on 2020-21. Importantly, through our forward planning, we are plotting a clear path to bring the budget back to surplus while continuing to support the community and prepare for ongoing population growth. Both Our Community Plan 2021-25 and our Proposed Budget 2021-22 are now open for comment at yoursay.geelongaustralia. com.au We would value your feedback before we consider finalising both documents at the end of June.

Cabaret star Anastasia for hire By Luke Voogt After a decade writing and performing cabaret across Australia and the world, Anya Anastasia is on the brink of superstardom or a mental breakdown – or both. “I’ll let the chickens out, they’re so noisy,” she told the Independent from her godmother’s farm in Adelaide Hills, as a rooster crowed in the background. “He’s trying to steal the limelight.” Anastasia has spent a good chunk of COVID-19 weeding and revegetating her godmother’s farm, along with feeding its resident animals. “It’s quite a rundown old piece of land that needed people with time on their hands to do it up a bit,” she said. “When things don’t turn out to plan, you’ve got to be a bit open-minded.” But next Friday the Adelaide songstress will kick off the gumboots and chuck on her stockings for her latest show, Cabaret Star for Hire, at the Potato Shed beginning 8pm. Anastasia wrote the show in 2019 about, ironically, her disillusion with cabaret after a decade touring and performing at festivals around the world. Her fascination with cabaret began at age 18, but over the years the profession took its toll. “The financial rewards were enough to keep it going, provided I never stopped,” she said. “There was no time to give back to myself – it was always onto the next tour and on to the next tour and so on. “I wrote this show as a rebellion against show biz. “Instead of saying, ‘this is sold out’ or ‘I’m really loving every second of this’, I wanted to actually talk about the truth and why I failed and why ‘this isn’t working out for me’. “The show is me thinking, ‘I’ve quit cabaret, what should I do next?’

Anya Anastasia performs Cabaret Star For Hire at Adelaide Fringe. (Tony Virgo)

“It’s difficult trying to think of me doing anything else. “I can play piano backwards behind my head while I sing and I have an excellent vocal range. “I spent years on that acrobatic piano skill but it’s really not applicable outside theatre. “While my CV is impressive in the context of show biz, I don’t have much experience in anything else.” The show won best comedy cabaret at the 2019 Adelaide Fringe. But then, when COVID-19 hit, Anastasia actually did quit performing, for a time.

“I quit first,” she laughed. “By current definitions I’m the least essential worker. There was not really any performance work to speak of, but I recorded a few tracks.” After recently returning to the stage, she is on her way to Drysdale to share her musings. In the show Anastasia regales her audience with relatable and honest tales from her life as a recently-retired showgirl who discovers a new purpose: to become a secret agent spy uncovering a worldwide plot. Anastasia looked forward to exploring the ambitions, failures and the struggles of a

female professional artist in the show at the Potato Shed. “I’m not there to sell my godmother’s produce or anything, I’m actually going to do a great show,” she said. “I’m really excited; it’s such a beautiful space and it’s always such a great crowd – I find the audience is really engaged there. “And I love their gorgeous curtains, I’m really obsessed with them – scalloped art deco-looking things – I don’t know where they got them.” Details: geelongaustralia.com.au/potatoshed

MY GEELONG Giulia Baggio started her working life as a journalist, and after a career change, is now the chief executive of G21 Geelong Region Alliance. She speaks to Luke Voogt about her life so far.

How did you come to be chief executive of G21 and what is the role like? I started my working life as a journalist at ABC news and current affairs. I loved the excitement of big breaking stories and the privilege of being invited into people’s homes and lives. But after 15 years of reporting, I decided I needed to do more than be an observer of events. I discovered the world of public policy and advocacy – and learned the craft of campaigning and working with the community to make good things happen. By comparison, it’s invisible work but much more fulfilling. The G21 role is perfect for me – it allows me to use my communications, campaign and policy skills to benefit a region I love. G21 is an organisation that works directly with the community, business and government to improve the lives of everyone in the Geelong region. Whether it’s faster trains, better health services or affordable housing, G21 takes up those issues and lobbies hard for action. The G21 area includes the Colac Otway Shire, Golden Plains Shire, Surf Coast Shire, Borough of Queenscliffe and City of Greater Geelong. It’s a joy to be involved with so many different communities. Anyone can join and it’s a unique way to get people from different walks together to identify urgent needs and 12 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 30 April, 2021

share good ideas. After growing up in and around Geelong, how do you see the region now? Our region is one of the fastest growing in Australia and the next 10 years will be vitally important. We need good quality housing and jobs, clean, sustainable energy and water use, connected roads and public transport and we need to protect the exquisite beauty of the region. We have to get the balance right. I’ve met so many warm, smart and committed people since taking up the role, I feel very confident this community is going to grow well and thrive. What are your favourite things to do or places to visit in the region? If I could fit my favourite things into 24 hours it would look like this: an early morning run in the You Yangs, breakfast at James Street Bakery in Geelong, a visit to the Rone exhibition at the Geelong Gallery, lunch at Clyde Park Vineyard near Bannockburn, an ice cream and a stroll through Colac’s Botanic Gardens, an afternoon on the boogie boards at Point Roadknight with my kids and best friend Bridgid, dinner and cocktails at Airey’s at A La Grecque with my husband and a midnight swim before hitting the sheets at Athelstane House in Queenscliff. Exhausting but perfect. How are you coping with COVID-19 and how has it affected your role and G21’s activities? Like everyone else, I’m glad to be in Australia and relieved it’s under control here. Upskilling through Zoom and Teams has been a positive for our organisation.

Tell us a bit about yourself … When my grandfather arrived from Italy nearly 100 years ago, he established a farm in Little River and that’s where my father grew up. My earliest memories are of picnics and bushwalks in the You Yangs and hot summer days in the waves at Torquay and Anglesea. All of these places hold a special place in my heart.

Whether you label it voyeurism, a comprehensive insight into human psychology, or simply a fun game, there’s something addictive about Big Brother. Having the unflappable and stylish Sonia Kruger as host only adds value to Seven’s ultracompetitive iteration of the fly-on-the-wall reality staple. Strategy, physical strength and endurance are key in a game where the power shifts each and every day. Tonight, Surprise Week comes to an end with the biggest shock of all when Big Brother reveals his secret attic. But the drama doesn’t end there: after a double elimination leaves one alliance in tatters, the housemates face a crucial nomination challenge in “Drop and Pop”.

If any program should take the gong as Australia’s most cheerful and fun TV show, this is it. There are diehard LEGO fans aplenty, including the show’s contestants, but even ordinary folk who have never lifted a LEGO block in their lives enthusiastically get behind this wholesome competition. With a kaleidoscope of colourful blocks as a backdrop, and mirthful comedian Hamish Blake (pictured) as host, it’s a winner. Geelong remembers Independent photographer Louisa Jones captured all the moments from the Geelong RSL Sub-branch Anzac Day ceremony on Sunday. After being confined to their homes last year, Geelong veterans got the chance to join the traditional dawn service and march this Anzac Day. Geelong RSL Sub-branch president Andrew Hanns said about 40 to 50 veterans attended a “discreet and intimate” dawn service. “Considering what we had to do with all the COVID compliances, it went well,” he said. “We can understand that numbers were down, but we had a march. It was good to have that for the veterans. We had nothing last year.” Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) squadron leader John Delia spoke at the Geelong RSL morning service, where he paid respect to the RAAF’s centenary. Mr Hann said while numbers were down, it was still good for veterans to be involved after missing out last year. Mr Hann said it was disappointing the Geelong RSL couldn’t hold its annual two-up games. “We always get a fair crowd for that, from all walks of life,” he said. “Overall, it was good considering school kids couldn’t march and first responders.” Dawn and commemorative services were also held at Colac, Newton, Norlane, Leopold, Portarlington, Ocean Grove, Lara, St Leonards, Drysdale, Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Bannockburn, Teesdale, Inverleigh, Bannockburn, Shelford, Anglesea, Lorne and Torquay. FEATURING ... DINE

Renowned chef changes things up for local diners Opening just five months ago, Curry at Corio has a convenient perch in Corio Village shopping centre, but any similarity to “mall food” ends there. Curry at Corio boasts as owner a renowned, award-winning chef, Atar Singh, who has appeared on The Chefs Line on SBS, and was former head chef at the famed Atta in Albert Park. He’s also worked for eight years in Japan, bringing the subcontinent’s many delicious dishes to another home of famed cuisine, also appearing on a Japanese TV show to show off his skills. Atar started out at the Connaught Palace in New Delhi; worked under the guidance of a chef from Moti Mahal, the birthplace of the original butter chicken; was selected to take part in a New York food festival while working with celebrity chef Sanjiv Kapor; and worked with some great restaurants, besides Atta, around Melbourne His credentials are impeccable, perfectly blending with “a burning desire to deliver his culinary talents in multi-cultural Australia”. Atar says that he’s now excited to bring his authentic international Indian flavours and cooking methods to locals in Corio and Greater Geelong. “We grind all of our own spices, and our slow-cooking methods mean you get a lot of flavour but in a much healthy version,” he says. “The positive feedback we’ve received locally has been really encouraging and we look forward to introducing some of our other dishes – such as our Paneer Tikka Achari, featuring chunks of homemade paneer (cottage

We offer the same sensory experience as a fine diner but in a more relaxed way. ”

SPORT Winter pennant season begins LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers Tennis Geelong’s Saturday Junior and Senior Pennants begin tomorrow. The junior fixture will feature 12 boys’ sections and seven girls’ sections, totalling 134 teams from across the region, with Geelong Lawn and Wandana Heights having the best representation at 16 and 15 teams respectively. The season will be a difficult one to predict with the change to the player lists from summer and with COVID playing havoc with team entry and then the cancellation of the last winter season. It is good to see the elevation of Surf Coast and Ocean Grove back to Section 1 Boys and Highton to Section 1 Girls. Week two will also see the start of the shorter format Orange ball competition. This competition is proving to be a great introductory program for younger participants

to get a taste of what competition is like, but on a smaller court. The senior competition will start tomorrow with 75 teams playing in 11 sections – five men’s and six mixed. Section 1 Mixed will be the pick of the top

grades with Newcomb looking to defend its title from 2019 and will welcome Denise Airey and Brad Tresidder to the line-up. Barwon Heads, the 2019 runners-up, will be hot on Newcomb’s heels, especially with the addition of some younger blood, in Liam Digby and Jordyn Aitken. Grovedale will also pose a threat with a team comprising members of the premiership Section 1 teams from summer – Jai Bosnjak, Dave Meehan and Bianca Duff. The undefeated premiers from Section 2 Mixed in summer, Ocean Grove, will also be in the mix, as it has flirted with the step up in previous seasons. With the extra experience of the summer season, this could be the breakthrough year for Grove. St Albans and Highton make up the balance of the teams and will also be competitive, but it will be hard to see them getting past the three frontrunners.

Shorter quarters ‘better’ By Justin Flynn Geelong coach Chris Scott has admitted he prefers last season’s format of 16-minute quarters. The AFL reverted back to the traditional 20-minute quarter this season after they were reduced to 16 minutes last year to allow for a condensed fixture due to the pandemic. “I’m a huge advocate for the game being shorter,” Scott said on Wednesday. “I think if the game stayed where it was last year, over a period of years everyone would get used to it. “The quality of the game I think would go up. I think it would be more sustainable for the best players that play for a longer period of time. “I just don’t buy into the idea that let’s make the hardest game in the world even harder and run these guys out of the game when they’re 30. “I’d love to see every game bar two, Dustin Martin run around as a 35-year-old.” 26 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 30 April, 2021

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan, Port Adelaide’s Ken Hinkley and St Kilda’s Brett Ratten have all said they would prefer quarters to be shorter. Carlton’s David Teague said he preferred 20-minute quarters and Richmond’s Damien Hardwick said he would settle for somewhere in between. Geelong takes on Sydney at the SCG tomorrow night. Both sides sit on four wins, but their formline is totally different. The Swans won their first four games and have dropped the last two. Geelong started slowly but has defeated North Melbourne by 30 points and West Coast by 97 points in consecutive games. However, Scott emphasised that the young Swans needed to be respected. “We weren’t panicking when we didn’t think we were on top of our game post the North game,” he said. “We won by 30 points, it wasn’t a disaster. And we’re not in love with ourselves now

because we executed much better against the Eagles. “It always brings you back down to earth when you look at the opposition and you see the quality of the footy that they’ve played.. And almost without exception across the competition you don’t need to go back too far to find good examples of the opposition playing well and Sydney’s first four weeks were really dominant.” Even without Lance Franklin and Sam Reid in the side, Scott said Sydney’s scoring potential was still a worry. “They have some young quality height and I imagine it’s going to be a bit of a selection headache for them when they have everyone available,” he said. “I doubt their structure will change too much. I think they will have at least two talls down there. “Their smalls are really dangerous. You look at their forward line and as much as any, (Tom) Papley’s the one that grabs your attention.”

Outer harbour the place for snapper ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos The weather is finally starting to settle after a few weeks of high winds and rain and the fishing has still remained quite good around the bay. The outer harbour has had some reports of some fantastic snapper getting caught with fish getting to 20lb. Bob Sobeveski got stuck into some cracking fish during a weekend evening soaking baits in hope of a snapper or two, and it’s pretty safe to say he was not disappointed. Bob landed three snapper at 9.5kg, 8kg and 5kg, along with three gummy sharks and a heap of smaller pinkies. St Helens rocks has been fishing quite well for land-based anglers over the past week or so, with a variety of species on the chew down there such as pinkie snapper, flathead and whiting. Casting out baits like blue bait and squid on a paternoster rig has been by far the best way to score a bite down there lately. The Curlewis bank is still producing some nice squid to anglers drifting the weed beds. The water clarity has cleared up quite nicely so the squid fishing has really improved from a few weeks ago, the standout coloured jigs would have to be natural colours at the moment but they don’t seem to be super fussy. Offshore Barwon Heads has had quite the break from the massive numbers of boats over the past few weeks but there is still some good fishing to be had out there. Although the tuna reports haven’t really been talk of the town there is still plenty of sign out there and some guys are still spotting them so it still pays to take some tuna gear out there and have a look. The flathead have been biting really well along the 50m line, the flatties have been in massive numbers and some good size ones amongst them too. The western lakes have really fired up this week with some fantastic reports of brown trout and redfin being caught. Lake Purrumbete has had massive numbers of redfin holding right around the lake but more towards the east bank. and at first light there has been some good trout on offer, with fish reaching the 8lb mark. WurdiBuloc Reservoir has been fishing well over the past week for both trout and redfin as Andrew Orchard found out early in the week, landing quality trout and redfin on shallow diving minnow hardbodies.
