On for young and old...

It was on for young and old at Nar Nar Goon on Saturday. The football club shared off with arch rival Cora Lynn in the battle for the Cuninngham Cup and managed to keep the trophy at Spencer Street after a stirring win, in which first gamer Paddy Cross looked lively. All this unfolded in front a big crowd, swelled by premiership reunions for the 2010 senior side, the 2010 and 2011 reserves and a few junior flags as well. The 2010 seniors broke a 30 year senior premiership drought for the club and all but two of that side returned for the occasion, along with a number of former officials. See pages 20-21 for all the premiership reunion action. See Footy Liftout for match details.

Killer roads cash driver behaviour on the rural roads within the shire and aimed to increase their presence and visibility in Cardinia. “We have added one additional police car, which forms part of Operation Recalibrate, targeting the South Gippsland Highway, Ballarto Road and surrounding rural roads between 6pm to 2am seven days a week,“ Sgt Cusack said. “That’s in addition to the standard resources on the roads that we have 24 hours a day.“ The focus of the operation is targeting speeding and impaired driving to reduce the incidence of offences which have been over represented in recent trauma on our roads, he said.

“So far police have detected a number of speeding motorists in the immediate vicinity including a 35-year-old male from Moe who was detected driving at 12.50am on Sunday 9 May, in an unroadworthy vehicle, driving whilst unlicensed and tested positive for illicit drugs. This male had has car impounded for a period of 30 days,“ Sgt Cusack said. “Police will continue to identify and prosecute those found committing both traffic and criminal offences in these areas and want everyone using the roads to focus on driving safely.“ The operation will be running for the next 10 days. News that a whopping $500 million will be allocated from the federal budget for road upgrades within the South East could not come at a more critical time, with the local road toll hitting an all-time high. Federal La Trobe MP, Jason Wood, said that more than $300 million will be going towards the ‘Pakenham roads package’, which will see major upgrades occur on Racecourse Road, Bald Hill Road and McGregor Road to name a few. An additional $203.4 million will be invested in the ‘Monash roads upgrade’, resulting in a combined total of about $500 million being invested in Melbourne’s South Eastern infra-

structure. This announcement comes after a harrowing week of road trauma in the local area, with three people tragically losing their lives in separate incidents. The alarming rate of driver deaths this year alone in Cardinia has prompted police to step up additional patrols and VicRoads to reduce the speed on one notorious stretch of the Healesville-Kooweerup Road. In a bid to improve safety, the speed limit on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road will be reduced by 10km/h, down to 80km/h from Monday 17 May, from Greenhills Road Pakenham to Rossiter Road in Kooweerup.
