Welcome to GenV By Luke Voogt An “Australia-first” infant study set to create 100 jobs and potentially attract 150,000 participants from across Victoria has begun at University Hospital Geelong. The Generation Victoria (GenV) project will become “one of the world’s largest-ever birth and parent cohort studies”, according to Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI). The institute and Barwon Health this week announced they had begun inviting Victorian parents and their newborns to take part in the project. Barwon Health research director Peter Vuillermin described GenV as a once-in-ageneration study. “[It] will create an internationally-unique resource for understanding the genetic and environmental factors that give kids a healthy start to life,” Professor Vuillermin said. MCRI plans to scale up GenV in mid-2021 to partner with all Victorian birthing hospitals. The project will give Victoria’s research community access to a more complete picture of the health and wellbeing of a generation, according to the institute. The opt-in project will follow babies and their parents to help solve problems such as asthma, food allergies, obesity and mental illness – mostly using data that is already routinely collected. GenV will create about 100 new jobs in clinical settings across the state over the life of the project, according to MCRI. GenV scientific director and paediatrician of 30 years, Melissa Wake, said the project aimed to create a healthier future for children and parents by 2035. “In addition, we are seeking to address the inequities that face so many children and families across Victoria,” Professor Wake said. “Over the next two years, around 150,000 children born in Victoria and their parents will have the opportunity to participate in the project. Put simply, by signing up to be a part of the GenV generation, parents will help to create a healthier future for all children and their families.” The project follows the Barwon Infant Study of more than 1000 babies and their families, which has been running in Geelong since 2010. Here’s cheers to beer week A Grovedale brewery will serve up pints and ping pong on Sunday – as Good Beer Week kicks off across Geelong and Victoria today. Awards are up for grabs for the fiercest local competitor with a paddle and the best-dressed in tennis whites, in one of several local events for the festival. “It’s something everyone can get around,” Blackman’s Brewery co-owner Renn Blackman said. “Pretty much everyone has played ping pong at some point – it doesn’t matter if they’re good or bad – it’s all a bit of fun. “There’ll be plenty of crew dressed up in their best whites and headbands.” Renn and wife Jess had initially planned to open their newest Grovedale brewery in late 2020. “Then COVID came along in March, so we pulled the pin – we didn’t know what was going to happen,” he said. After “breaking even” in 2020 with beer and food orders at their Torquay and Ocean Grove breweries, and JobKeeper, they were thrilled to finally open the Grovedale site this March. “It’s pretty exciting to get locals through the door for a beer,” Renn said. Good Beer Week runs until May 23 and, with more than 200 events across Victoria, Renn plans to take advantage of the first weekend “to get people down to the coast”. Blackman’s also has a ‘Euro Beer Trip’ and a beer cocktail event planned at the Torquay and Ocean Grove breweries tomorrow. “It’s all about celebrating good beer and being around people again,” Renn said. Geelong ‘high and dry’ in budget By Luke Voogt Geelong has “been left high and dry” in the 2021-22 federal budget with no new funding for council’s planned Northern Aquatic and Community Hub (NACH), according to Corio MP Richard Marles. “For all the money the Morrison government is splashing around … there is still not a single cent from the federal [budget] committed to funding the NACH,” the deputy opposition leader said. Norlane residents recently renewed their

campaign for funding for the $61.5 million project, with Geelong council seeking $20 million each from state and federal governments. Council agreed to reallocate $8.26 million of federal funding it received under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to the project, but has yet to receive any funding from state government. Mr Marles also took aim at a lack of budget funding for Deakin University, Geelong’s oil refinery and the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Newcomb. On Wednesday, federal Victorian senator

Sarah Henderson announced $105 million for stages two and three of the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds rail duplication. The budget also includes $90.5 million for the Barwon Heads Road duplication and $6 million to improve the safety of other local roads. The Geelong City Deal will result in the region receiving $69 million for projects including the Queenscliff Ferry Terminal Upgrade, the planned Geelong exhibition centre and Great Ocean Road infrastructure in the budget. The budget also includes $1.25 million for stage one of the Geelong Anam

Cara Hospice and $92,000 to upgrade lights at Portarlington Recreation Reserve. “Across our region, tens of millions of dollars will be unlocked this financial year for major infrastructure projects. This will not only create jobs but boost our regional economy,” Ms Henderson said. Regional alliance G21 welcomed funding for the Great Ocean Road but criticised a lack of tourism funding. “The lack of a targeted JobKeeper-style program is a double whammy for the region’s visitor economy,” G21 chief executive Giulia Baggio said.

Wedding expo returns to racecourse Brides-to-be and wedding planners will flock to Geelong Racecourse for a marriage expo returning for the first time in two years this Sunday. Geelong Wedding Expo will feature more than 90 exhibitors for everything nuptial, according to director Kari Hauser. “We’re jam-packed this year!” the Lara wedding photographer said. “We’ve had to place the stalls differently due to COVID-19. I’m trying to fit in other people but it’s getting virtually impossible.” The expo features dress and cake makers,

photographers, makeup artists, celebrants, venue hire displays, signage booths, a jumping castle and, for the first time, food trucks. “We’re bringing them in so we can have more of a festival atmosphere,” Kari said. “That’s the incredible thing about the Geelong business community; when we need help, we all jump onboard to help each other.” Business is booming for Kari, who for about a decade has run the expo – now in its 22nd year after being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19. “Last year was tough – the wedding industry was hit really hard. So there’s no explaining the

excitement they have marrying people and just doing their job again, finally.” Exhibiting makeup artist Jessica Anderson said the wedding season had extended into winter this year to cope with a backlog of engaged couples. “Normally we’d be shutting down about now and taking well-earned trips to Bali. But we’re forging right through, nobody cares about the weather. It’s about time!” Details: geelongweddingexpo.com

Solar installations at nine Surf Coast locations will commence this month, the shire’s council has announced. “This is a step towards our community becoming carbon neutral by 2030, which many people are calling for,” Torquay ward councillor Kate Gazzard said. Council will install solar systems at Torquay, Winchelsea and Anglesea senior citizens centres, Moriac and Lorne community centres and Anglesea Kindergarten. Another three installations will occur at Aireys Inlet Community Hall, Ellimatta Reserve, Anglesea, and Eastern Reserve, Winchelsea. The latter three installations, funded by the RACV’s Resilience in the Regions grants, will cost ratepayers nothing, according to the shire. The announcement follows the installation of 135 kilowatts worth of panels on four council buildings last year. The new installations will bring the total capacity of systems installed on council buildings to more than 570 kilowatts, according to the shire. “It’s fantastic to expand this program to include further community buildings which have incredible capacity to feature this kind of green technology,” Cr Gazzard said. Virtual healthcare grew by almost 900 per cent at Barwon Health in 2020 amid COVID-19, the organisation has revealed. Telehealth sessions peaked last August with more than 2300 appointments, and have dropped steadily since eased restrictions have allowed a return to face-to-face consultations, with about 700 this March. Phone appointments also increased during lockdown periods, rising from 3400 in last April to about 8000 a month from May to October 2020. Barwon Health was unable to provide local data on how the pandemic had impacted people booking check-ups or coming in for treatment, spokesperson Kate Bibby said. “During the lockdown months last year, we were aware that some people were delaying their treatment, with fewer people seeking treatment across all triage categories of our emergency department,” Ms Bibby said.

Waurn Ponds author Sally Learey has launched Corio Bay Quest – a book in a series that began, ironically, because of the “black and white” running through her “veins”. Sally, who grew up in Melbourne, fell in love with Geelong when she moved in 1994, but her allegiance to the Magpies remained. “I brainwashed my son to barrack for Collingwood because my grandad was the oldest living member at the time,” she said. “He said, ‘mum, Collingwood doesn’t mean anything for me, but Geelong does’.” To tell her grandfather “indirectly”, she wrote Corio Bay Kingdom about a boy who becomes a Cats supporter while visiting Geelong’s attractions. In his last days her grandfather figured out her son had changed teams and

gave his blessing. “He said, ‘I understand, because he lives in Geelong’,” Sally said. On Tuesday she launched the sequel, Corio Bay Quest, with more than 130 local kids at Geelong Library and Heritage Centre or watching online. “It’s the same family, because people seemed to connect with them – they’ve got a new baby,” she said. “The book is about them showing the baby their favourite places and getting the baby to choose the best.” The book’s watercolour illustrations, on display at the library until May 15, showcase attractions across the city. Pool plan leaves locals in the cold By Luke Voogt Keri East drives 220 kilometres each week from her Clifton Springs home to Waurn Ponds for daughter Baylie’s hydrotherapy. Baylie, 21, is non-verbal and has poor circulation and other complications from two extremely rare genetic conditions, including one shared by only 150 people worldwide. “She relies on the hydrotherapy to keep her joints moving properly,” Ms East said. Ms East had hoped Geelong council’s

planned $15.5 million pool in Drysdale would cut her nine hours of weekly travel dramatically. But her hopes were shattered when she discovered the plans were for an outdoor facility, with no hydrotherapy pool. “It’s ridiculous,” she said. “It’s really important, given how many people there are on the Bellarine with disability, we think about the hydrotherapy pool as well.” Council’s heated indoor pool at Waurn Ponds already leaves Baylie with blue limbs due

to her poor circulation, according to Ms East. An outdoor pool would be poorly suited to her, and the Bellarine Peninsula’s large elderly and disabled populations, she said. “You only need to check out where they’re planning to build it to feel the wind chill factor. “It seems like a ridiculous waste of money when it could be done properly the first time.” Corangamite MP Libby Coker took aim at the plans and council’s “lack” of consultation with “vulnerable people”. But Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said

the pool would be heated and that council was listening to the community about the need for further facilities. “We don’t have funding for this at the moment, but at our most recent council meeting we resolved to find avenues to fund a future stage two that would include indoor pools,” Cr Asher said. “We would welcome the Member for Corangamite’s support in helping us to advocate for government funding for future stages of the development.”

Kitchen reno welcomed Apprentice chef Mika Brand is excited to serve up delicacies in a revamped Davidson Restaurant at The Gordon next year, following a $23.5 million upgrade. “Having an updated Davidson Restaurant will be amazing to train in,” the 19-year-old said. “We’ll be able to make and present very nice food.” The second-year apprentice from Ocean Grove, currently studying certificate III in commercial cookery at The Gordon TAFE, described the existing restaurant as “a little bit outdated”. “It wasn’t the nicest restaurant to sit in and eat – it was quite dark and dull,” she said. “It’s a beautiful open area but it wasn’t being used to its capacity.” Recently state government announced $13.5 million to create “cutting-edge” training kitchens, a bakery facility, barista academy and café, and an al fresco dining area. The Gordon contributed $10 million to the

project, to be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption to students at its central Geelong campus. The TAFE institute’s training facility, the Davidson Restaurant, will also be renovated in the project. Mika hopes to build on her cooking skills when the upgraded restaurant and training facilities reopen next year. “I really enjoy serving customers beautiful food,” she said. “It’s going to be really good to use the new facilities next year.” The project will create 400 jobs during construction, with 70 per cent allocated to regional Victorians, according to state government. “TAFE is a ticket to skills, jobs and a stronger Victoria – which is why we’ve invested in this state-of-the-art facility at The Gordon,” Training, Skills and Higher Education Minister Gayle Tierney said. Following the suspension of in-person circuit sittings, the County Court of Victoria implemented a new process for regional matters. Under the process, all pleas and appeals against sentences are provided with a fixed listing date upon committal or appeal lodgement. “The majority of these matters were conducted virtually using video conferencing software, with appearances in court permitted under limited circumstances,” a court spokesperson said. “This has reduced the delay for these types of matters.”

Indian community’s anguish By Luke Voogt Grovedale-based student Varun Hariprakash can only watch and hope as his mother and sister recover from COVID-19 amid the worsening pandemic in his home country. “The first time they told me they had it, I pretty much broke down,” the 31-year-old master of architecture student from Bangalore said. “My mum is asthmatic, so it’s very dangerous for her. It was heartbreaking not being able to be there in person.” Mr Hariprakash sent money from his savings to his mother and sister, his only immediate family, and regularly makes video calls to check up on them. His sister has anaemia, making her vulnerable too. But thankfully, more than a fortnight after contracting COVID-19, they appear to be recovering. “I’ve made sure they’ll be at home and people come to help them, rather than they go to hospital,” he said. Mr Hariprakash’s story is just one of many among Geelong’s several thousand Indian-Australians, and several thousand more international students from the COVID-plagued country. “One of our members lost his father in December,” Indian Association of Geelong spokesperson Mandeep Singh said. “Last Saturday he just got a call that his father-in-law had died from COVID too. He went into hospital with COVID-19 and didn’t come out.” Mr Singh fears for his own parents still living in Punjab. “I’m telling them to be safe and to keep themselves isolated,” he said. “The situation is quite tense and they are worried.

After delivering 30,000 meals across Geelong to those in need during Victoria’s lockdowns, the local Sikh and Indian communities are now raising funds for those trapped in India. Last Friday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that government chartered repatriation flights from India were scheduled to resume tomorrow.

Indian Association of Geelong met with Corangamite MP Libby Coker this week, and the group plans to send urgently-needed oxygen and medical supplies to India. FRIDAY FEATURE

Little Narkiah needs your help By Luke Voogt After being clinically dead and surviving several near-death experiences, at just age seven years of age, little Grovedale warrior Narkiah Bishop has defied the odds. Before she was born, a congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) attacked her brain, liver, hearing and blood count, leaving her with lifelong disabilities and epilepsy. When mum Chloe Meadows, then an 18-year-old living in Warrnambool, gave birth, her firstborn’s eyes were filled with blood. “Her blood vessels had popped – everything except her irises was red,” she remembered. On day two, Narkiah began having seizures, prompting medical staff to run tests. “Her blood count kept dropping and she kept needing transfusions,” Chloe said. “A lot of people thought Narkiah wouldn’t make it through the first week.” At five-days-old, following initial confusion over her condition, Narkiah was diagnosed with CMV, which Chloe had never heard of. “I was so scared, because I looked up CMV and everything was just death, death, death,” she said. Narkiah was flown to Mercy Hospital for Women, where specialists injected an antiviral drug straight into her heart. Scans revealed liver damage and brain abnormalities, including a hole the size of a 50-cent piece, with specialists telling Chloe that Narkiah could end up braindead. “That was a big kick in the guts,” she said. But the next week Narkiah’s life began to turn around, as she was taken off oxygen, her platelet count recovered and she smiled at her mum for the first time while she was feeding her. “It was like she was telling me she’s got this, she’s tough, why am I the one crying when she’s

going through all this crap?” Chloe said. Narkiah was discharged on New Year’s Eve, 2013, after spending 46 days in hospital, and Chloe, who grew up in Ocean Grove, moved to Geelong to be closer to support. Chloe struggled through the housing system to find a suitable permanent rental, gave birth to Narkiah’s younger brother Memphis and separated from her partner, all while raising her daughter. “She wasn’t hitting her milestones on time

but she was babbling, happy, eating solid food and learning how to sit up without assistance.” But at age three Narkiah stopped gaining weight. “She weighed the same as Memphis weighed at age one,” Chloe said. Narkiah needed a feeding tube to help her gain weight, spent a lot of time in intensive care and went “quite far backwards”, she said. When she was five, a bacterial infection in her lungs caused her to be rushed to University

Hospital Geelong, where she was clinically dead for three minutes. “Those three minutes felt like an entire lifetime,” Chloe said. “We lost her briefly, but she’s strong as hell. Three days later she’s lying on the ICU bed smiling like nothing had happened.” Now seven, Narkiah still has her “million-dollar smile”. “She can’t walk or talk but she’s got her own little way of communicating with the different sounds she can vocalise,” Chloe said. “She’s strong with her eyes, she likes to use her eye-gaze [communication] device, or look at what toy she wants to play with or what she wants to wear in the morning.” The “social” youngster “adores” going to Barwon Valley School. But she has grown to two thirds the height of her mum, who now struggles to get her in the car. “It’s getting to the point where it’s something I physically cannot do,” Chloe said. This often leaves Chloe, a single mum and full-time carer on Centrelink, with expensive disabled cab fares. “There’s just so much I feel the kids miss out on because we don’t have access to transport,” Chloe said. The National Disability Insurance Scheme has stringent criteria for cars that can be modified to support children with disabilities such as Narkiah. So Chloe has launched a fundraising campaign to buy an eligible car. “I just want to give Narkiah the best life possible, because it might not be as long as we want it to be,” she said. “I don’t want her to be held back by something as basic as not being able to modify a car for her.” To donate visit gofundme.com and search ‘Narkiah’.

A Winchelsea man charged over allegedly ramming two police cars at a North Geelong service station on Sunday night has refused to appear in court. Police allege Oaklee Carney, 20, deliberately drove into the vehicles at the APCO service station on Thompson Road about 10.30pm. Police allege a search of the car uncovered a quantity of drugs and a “significant” quantity of cash. Carney was charged with offences including reckless conduct endangering serious injury and aggravated intentional exposure of a police officer to risk by driving. He also faces charges of committing an indictable offence whilst on bail, driving whilst disqualified, possessing cannabis, fraudulently using a registration plate, theft, failure to stop on police request and resisting an officer. Carney was due to appear in Geelong Magistrates Court for a filing hearing on Monday, but the court heard he refused to leave his cell. His lawyer listed custody management issues including depression and anxiety. He was remanded in custody for a committal mention on August 6.

Family, friends, dignitaries and past and present Geelong Cats have honoured former club president, businessman and philanthropist Frank Costa, who died earlier this month. An estimated 2000 people attended a state memorial service at GMHBA Stadium on Wednesday for Francis Aloysius Costa, best known for his role in saving the Cats from financial ruin. Mr Costa took over his parents’ grocery store as a young man and grew it into a national produce empire, while facing down corruption and threats from Melbourne’s Calabrian mafia. Brother Robert Costa remembered Frank’s resolve when their business came close to collapsing in the 1960s. A bank manager gave Frank two choices, sell the business or shut it down, saying “you boys have just bitten off far more than you can chew”, his brother remembered. “Frank’s answer was very swift and emphatic. He looked us in the eye and he said, ‘we’re going to chew like buggery’. And he did. “And Frank led the charge. Did he do it all alone? No, of course not. But the strength of his character and his indomitable will galvanised everybody around him. “The team … he put together in that crisis, they would have walked through the Valley of Death for Frank.” Mr Costa’s business success led to an invitation in 1996 to join the board of the Cats, who were struggling with major financial difficulties. When he departed as president in 2010, the Cats had broken their 44-year premiership drought and secured funding for major upgrades at Kardinia Park. After retiring as president, Mr Costa became

Participants turned out in impressive numbers to walk or run at Eastern Park in support of people living with dementia. I wanted to take an opportunity to thank the people of Geelong for their fantastic show of support and community spirit. It was inspiring to see such willingness from participants as they adapted to the changes made to the format of the event, so that it could be run in a COVID-safe way. From walkers, runners and joggers, to donors and volunteers, I would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to the success of this event. We couldn’t have done it without you! Shed to get Mental as Everything By Luke Voogt Damon Smith dives into bipolar and obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD) with New Orleans jazz and contemporary song-writing in his latest show Mental as Everything. The show, coming to the Potato Shed at 8pm next Thursday and Friday, is a raw and honest exploration of mental illness and living with two widely-misunderstood conditions. “It’s a musical journey through mental health,” said Smith, who joins fellow muso Adam Coad for the show. “We do it with good humour and original music. “One of the things we’re trying to break down is how everyone uses the term OCD to explain how neurotic or meticulouslyorganised they are. “People say, ‘I’m so OCD when it comes to my vintage broccoli collections’, or ‘I put all my red pens here and my blue pens there’, or ‘I have to hang up the washing a certain way’. “I can’t diagnose OCD. But what I say is, ‘if you don’t organise your pegs in a certain order, do you feel like you’re going to die or your

family members are going to be hurt?’ “It’s that sense of pending doom.” If Smith fails to follow certain patterns, he develops a feeling that “I’ll crash the car later” or something will go wrong. “I do things in threes, sevens and twelves,” he said. “I wake up and put my shoes and socks on seven times – if I don’t do that I have a really crappy day right off the bat.

“That’s how my brain works every minute of the day. It’s like I’m living with a totalitarian leader.” But when it comes to “the most magical and unknown things out there” bipolar is “right up the top”, according to Smith. He experiences bouts of mania, while the other side of the condition can lead to “self-loathing” and “thoughts of suicide that come and go”. He manages the condition, with medication, for himself, his wife and their eight-year-old daughter. “To say I manage it completely, and that they don’t see the highs and lows, would be complete and utter lie,” he said. “My wife is incredibly understanding with what I go through.” The show, which Smith wrote a few years ago, has no connection to Aussie pop-rock group Mental as Anything. “But I knew very well when I penned that title people would put two and two together,” he said. Though he does have an odd connection to lead vocalist Andrew ‘Greedy’ Smith, who he shared a radio interview with over the phone.

“I think he died about two weeks after that,” he said. Smith debuted the show at Adelaide fringe, where he realised “it was something that audiences wanted to see”. “More importantly, programmers were very interested in taking on this work,” he said. “Mental health is at the front of the conversation at the moment.“ But COVID-19 put a premature halt to their tour last year. “That’s how we got this 2021 tour – the show that we’re doing now is the cancelled tour,” Smith said. Just like the mania and depression Smith experiences, the show can switch from comedy to absurdity in an instant. The show invites audiences into his and Coad’s minds for a journey with hilarious onstage buffoonery and songs exploring their diagnosed conditions. “If I’m not thinking about getting the words right while playing, I’m having a great time,” Smith said. Geelong’s soul Sweethearts join big names in CBD Geelong’s sisters of soul, the Sweethearts, and big-time Aussie acts such as Alex Lahey will take over CBD streets in a live music festival rolling into town later this month. Sweetfest, running 10am to 6pm on May 30, features more than 20 local and Australian acts including ex-Jezabels singer Hayley Mary and Emma Donovan and The Putbacks. “It’s a fantastic mix of local and national artists, many of who I’ve played with or watched,” said 17-year-old Sweethearts guitarist Sarah Hobbs. “We’re bringing all these women to Geelong and putting them on a stage in the same place.” Also on the line-up are Ebony and the Dilemmas, Fulton Street, Cry Baby, Sirens, Rach Brennan, Libby Steel, Ella Sweeney, Mink Mila, Kim Cooper, Lique, Andrea and Carly Robertson, Hassall, Operation Karma and Brunette Red Dress. “They’re all very talented and entertaining to watch,” Hobbs said. And, of course, Sweetfest would not be complete without the Sweethearts playing on the Little Malop Street main stage, along with their junior band Young Hearts. Hobbs, who has played across Europe with the Sweethearts, said she and her bandmates were thrilled to get onstage in Geelong again after COVID-19 halted last year’s Sweetfest. “This festival is one of those ways to really say, ‘live music is back’,” she said. “It’s incredible – it’s one of those things where you don’t realise what you had until you’ve lost it. “It might not be the biggest show we’ve played, but it’s certainly the most special – we hold Sweetfest really close to our hearts.” The Sacred Heart College student grew up watching older sisters Emma, 21, and Rachael, 19, play bass and saxophone for the Sweethearts, while younger sister Laura, 15, now plays drums. “I’ve been watching them perform since I was about seven,” she said. “The band blew me away with their stage presence. I remember thinking to myself, ‘this is the band I want to be in‘. “Their guitarist Georgia Rodgers was phenomenal and she really inspired me – I wanted to have the opportunity to play alongside such incredible musicians.” But despite playing with so many other talented young women, Hobbs still gets her chance to stand out with the odd guitar solo. “As a guitarist in a 30-piece band, you’re often backing up everyone else,” she said. “But those solos give me a 30-second timeslot to tell a story, which is what music is to me.”

Sarah Hobbs performs with the Sweethearts in 2019 in Porretta Terme, Italy (main), and in Montreux, Switzerland; and in central Geelong for Sweetfest 2018. (Pictures: Supplied)

Hobbs draws inspiration from fellow “lefty” Jimi Hendrix, plays in another local band, Operation Karma, and dreams of a career in the music industry. “If I can make my living off music, that would be mission accomplished for me,” she said. Sweetfest showcases the “strength and

depth” of female musicians in Geelong and Melbourne across four stages in the CBD. The free central Geelong festival has received funding from council through its arts and culture industry commissions. “Through the joy of live music, this event will help draw visitors into central Geelong,

creating a vibrant atmosphere and generating increased trade for CBD bars, restaurants and other venues,” Geelong councillor Eddy Kontelj said. Details: sweethearts.com.au/sweetmusicfest Luke Voogt 17 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 14 May, 2021

The correct diagnosis/treatment for heel pain is vital. (Supplied)

Is your heel being a pain? Foot pain is very common, affecting more than 80 per cent of people at some point in their lives, with heel pain being the most common of all human foot complaints. Despite their frequency, these conditions are often mismanaged and incorrectly treated. This leaves many sufferers spending time and money on treatments without long-term solutions or relief. But why are such common problems seemingly so hard to treat effectively? Dr David Kavanagh from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, one of Australia’s leaders in foot, knee and leg pain treatment, explains. “For example, most heel pain is incorrectly assumed to be an inflammatory condition

when it is nearly always a result of nerve impingement or tissue degeneration,” Dr Kavanagh says. “Tissue thickening is often mistaken for inflammation, contributing to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. This is a big problem and may actually cause further tissue damage, making the condition worse.” If your feet, heels or knees are giving you pain, Dr Kavanagh consults at Geelong, and right now is offering $50 off the initial consultation.

Farrer wins, Huxtable takes title By Luke Voogt

Third round results:

Charlie Farrer’s last-second victory in the third round was not enough to steal the Victorian Junior Surfing title from fellow local Ethan Huxtable. Huxtable (Jan Juc) led yesterday’s final under-18 heat with a combined total of 13.27 until Farrer (Barwon Heads) stole the lead in the dying seconds. Chasing a five-point ride with the heat drawing to a close, Farrer stroked onto a left-hander and produced a well-deserved 6.93 to take the lead. “The conditions were quite fun out there,” Farrer said. “I was lucky to have snuck that wave in the last few minutes of the heat, and I’m stoked to take out the win.” Both surfers have now won a round each in the three-round series, but Huxtable’s two runner-up placings secured him a narrow victory overall for the title. In the under-18 girls, Jan Juc’s Mia Huppatz won the third round with a combined heat total of 8.77 to complete a clean sweep of the titles. Huppatz showed some smart and strategic surfing with nice powerful manoeuvres throughout the event. “Conditions became tricky in the under-18 girls final, with backwash creating a lump in the water,” she said. “I managed to get a couple though.” Not far behind Huppatz was Point Lonsdale’s Minni Vorrath, who required a 4.61 to advance into first but fell about a point short. Visiting surfers made the most of fun but tricky 2-3 foot waves in round three at Jan Juc Beach, with Barwon Heads’ Jack Bassett the

Two-man show gets it right Keleman Motors is a well-respected name in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula and has been for more than 40 years. Shane Lockyer and Joe Atkinson took ownership of the region’s only independent Mazda specialist three years ago and Shane says it’s meticulous workmanship and customer focus that’s seen them continue building on a solid foundation.

“We offer a strictly honest approach to workmanship of the highest quality,” Shane says. “We’re also known for our fair prices.” The duo each has more than 15 years’ experience in the trade and make sure looking after their customers is a top priority as they carry out servicing and repairs to all makes and models. “There’s just the two of us in the workshop,”

Joe says, “so customers can talk directly to the mechanic actually doing the work. And we always take time to explain in detail any issues their car may have. “No work is ever carried out without approval, but we’ll recommend what a vehicle needs. Then the decision is left to the customer whether to go ahead.” Shane finishes by saying, “It’s just a two-man

Geelong AFLW coach Paul Hood resigns Geelong AFLW coach Paul Hood has quit the role after a decade with the Cats. Hood joined Geelong in late 2010 and held multiple roles at the club, including VFL and VFLW coach, before taking the helm of Geelong’s AFLW side for three seasons. He led the Cats to the preliminary final in their first year in the AFLW (2019), but the side had a disappointing 2021, winning just one game of nine. Hood returned to secondary school teaching full-time this year while coaching the ALFW side. Geelong Cats chief executive Brian Cook thanked Hood for his decade of service and “unwavering commitment to the development of our players”.

“Paul has been a key leader of our women’s football program from its inception; he brought the program to life,” he said. “Paul had a genuine care for his players, and the work he has done within our women’s football program is a testament to him as a person.” Hood thanked Steve Hocking, Neil Balme and Chris Scott for giving him his opportunity at the Cats, along with coaches Dale Amost and Matthew Knights for their “brilliant tutelage”. “I was extremely humbled to be given an opportunity to work at the greatest club in late 2010 and can’t be more grateful for my time at the Cats,” Hood said. “I have been so fortunate to work alongside many brilliant people in the Geelong Cats football department who tirelessly support all of our players.

“In the last five years it’s been a joy to work alongside our staff in the women’s program and to be a part of building something that can inspire the young women of Geelong for generations. “To all the players I’ve had the privilege to coach, thank you so much for putting your hearts and bodies on the line, and a special mention to the three inspirational captains who served as leaders to those groups, Bec Goring, Melissa Hickey and Meghan McDonald, who were such great role models for their teammates.” The club will begin a recruitment process to replace Hood in coming weeks. Cats face ruck dilemma By Luke Voogt Geelong faces a selection dilemma in combatting Saints ruck pair Paddy Ryder and Rowan Marshall after Esava Ratugolea impressed as a last-minute replacement for Rhys Stanley last Friday. “Ryder coming back in the team in combination with Marshall has changed them the last couple of weeks,” Cats coach Chris Scott told a press conference on Tuesday. “They’ve been really good around the ball, good at stoppages and Ryder’s a special player – given the chance to do what he does. “We’ve spent some hours on it already and I suspect there’s a few hours in front of us before we actually come to a conclusion there. “We’ve got confidence in our guys as well. “All of our options are a bit different to Ryder and Marshall, so we’ll just have to think about the right combination there.” Ratugolea was impressive in short bursts, with Mark Blicavs and Jack Henry sharing the ruck duties, in Geelong’s 63-point thrashing of Richmond. His athleticism in the centre circle stood out when he tapped the ball to himself – albeit against a smaller ruck opponent in Marlion Pickett – sprinted, and hit up Isaac Smith in

the forward 50. Ratugolea is available for Friday’s clash, despite a poke to the eye against Richmond. Scott acknowledged comparisons between Ratugolea and past ruck-forwards the likes of Brad Ottens and Paul Salmon. “We can foresee Esava developing into that sort of player,” he said. “We haven’t ruled out the possibility he could play big game time as a forward. “I could make an argument to say Esava is one of our better ground-level players full stop, irrespective of size.” Fellow big man Stanley dominated against star ruck Nic Naitanui a fortnight before being omitted, but has had an up-and-down season. Darcy Fort is also a chance following good form in the VFL. The decision could be important against the Saints, who are rebounding after wins against Hawthorn and Gold Coast. “A few of the players that have been key to them [and] the newer recruits over the last year or two – look to be in good form,” Scott said. Scott was pleased with Geelong’s pressure and contested ball against Richmond. “I think the biggest mistake for us to make would be to get carried away because we beat

the best team in the comp – that’s still how we regard them – and let it impact on our progression,” he said. “You’ve got to find a way to keep a bit of a lid on it when things are going well – realise that it’s not as good as it seems – but also pick yourselves up a little bit when everyone’s trying to tell you it’s a disaster. “I guess there’s been a sense around us earlier in the year that we weren’t quite playing as well as people expected us to. “We don’t live in the world where we’re trying to meet people’s expectations. We’re trying to improve our game and play the way that we think is best for us, and we think we’re on that track.” Geelong’s three-pronged attack of Jeremy Cameron (six), Gary Rohan (five) and Tom Hawkins (four) also had a fantastic night with 15 goals between them. “It certainly gives the guys up the field real confidence that if we provide enough service then they’ll be able to finish it off,” Scott said. Defender Jake Kolodjashnij is on “the cusp of returning”, according to Cats football general manager Simon Lloyd. But Sam Simpson looks set to miss a few weeks after low-grade hamstring strain in his return to AFL football.

The freshwater fishing has really started to fire up over the past few days with the south west lakes producing some cracking fish. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir has been fishing very well of late with trout and redfin in the feeding mood. Fishing at first or last light is definitely the best times to get there and cast. The trout have been biting best on shallow diving minnow-style lures but it still pays to take a variety such as spoons, plastics and spinners. The redfin are still biting well in the reservoir, with fish getting up to 40cm. Spoons have probably been the most productive as they will assist in getting a big cast out to cover more water. Lake Purrumbete has also had some good reports over the past week with anglers finding some nice brown trout, along with plenty of redfin too. The Geelong waterfront has still been fishing well for land-based fishos and again Wangim Walk has been the number one hot spot to wet a line. Adam Van Der Lugt from Trellys went for a suss during the week and found himself crossing paths with a few pinkie snapper and salmon, all on soft plastics. Running about a 1/6 ounce jig head with a 4inch plastic, with either a curl or paddle tail, is definitely the go to getting bites down there at the moment. King George whiting have slowed a little bit over the past week in some areas but anglers are still having no worries in scoring a bag of fish. The better reports are coming mainly from Clifton Springs through to Portarlington. St Leonards has had some good gummy shark fishing on offer over these past few weeks, with anglers finding plenty of what you would call “perfect table fish”. Fishing the deeper water or the channels have been the most productive locations, with fresh bait such as salmon and squid working a treat. The fish have been biting well all throughout the day but fishing the tide changes are the best times to chase them.

Next stop, Olympic trials By Luke Voogt At just 13 years of age, Geelong Swimming Club’s Hayley Mackinder has broken a 26-year-old national record and qualified for the Australian Olympic trials in June. Mackinder swam the 100m breaststroke in 1:11.66 at the Australian Age Swimming Championships last month, beating the Australian record for the 13-years age group of 1:12.10 set in 1995. “It felt pretty incredible to break the record and I actually didn’t realise I had until after the race,” she said. She backed up the record by winning gold in the final. “I went out harder in the final and did a PB for my first 50m, so I was pretty happy,” she said. “I think I’m just relieved that I put together a good race and was able to back it up in the final and get the gold – so I’m really happy. “I’m so lucky to have the best coaches Sam [Ashby] and Lucky [Weerakkod] … they have always believed in me. “I also couldn’t do it without my parents and my sister – it’s a big commitment from my

whole family. My clubmates are the best, we were by far the loudest-cheering club there!” Fellow Geelong Swimming Club member Matilda Byrnes won bronze in the women’s 13-years 100m butterfly, the club’s first medal in this category for 18 years, and the 100m backstroke. Madison Cooper made finals in the women’s 16-years 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle to qualify for the Olympic trials.

Dylan Logan competed in the Australian Age and Open Multi-class Nationals and won gold in the men’s 17/18-years 100m backstroke, along with silver in the 50m freestyle and the men’s open 50m butterfly. The swimmers train at Kardinia Aquatic Centre, which runs nine training sessions each week. Last year, council allocated $300,000 to open the South Geelong facility for an extended period during the 2020 off season. Geelong Swimming Club president Glenn Benson said council keeping the pool open and adapting to COVID-19 restrictions contributed to the club’s “extraordinary results during the 2020-21 season”. Geelong deputy mayor Trent Sullivan congratulated Hayley and her peers for their athleticism and dedication, and praised Geelong Swimming Club for its support and training programs. “It’s incredible to see Geelong represented so strongly on the national stage,” he said. “Congratulations to Hayley on her record-breaking swim, gold medal and for qualifying for the Olympic trials.”

Dragon boats back in river battle More than 300 paddles will churn up the river as dragon boat clubs from across Victoria flock to Geelong for Battle on the Barwon this Sunday. “It’s great to be back in the boat this year,” event committee member and dragon boater Margaret Harry told the Independent. “We had to cancel it last year due to COVID-19. We’re very keen. Come and see some great paddling on the river!” The event, which began with founder Lauren Vallance organising a social gathering, will this year draw 18 clubs to the Barwon River, according to Margaret. “It’s known all over the country as BOB,” she said. “Initially Lauren’s idea was to invite a few 26 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 14 May, 2021

clubs down to the river for a paddle. She’s been in dragon boating for much longer than I have – probably 15 years. “But it’s grown year by year – it’s become quite big and popular.” The event, running 9.30am to 2pm near Geelong Canoe Club, features 100m sprints and 5.4-kilometre time trials, a barbecue, coffee van and even a gumboot throwing competition. “It’s not all about serious competition,” Margaret said. “It’s more of a fun day for dragon boaters.” The 69-year-old from Rippleside has been part of Geelong Dragon Boat Club for several years.

The club welcomes members as young as 10, who can compete once they reach age 12. “It’s a great activity for all ages mixed together in one team,” Margaret said. “There would be a quite a few paddlers around who are 80 or pushing 80, and there’s no problems with their strength and ability. “It’s a great social sport, which you can do at your own level.” The sport of dragon boating features teams of 20 rowers, a steerer and, on competition days, a drummer. “I’ve done the drumming too – it’s not too bad,” Margaret laughed. Ocean Grove and Grovedale undefeated LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers Grovedale and Ocean Grove remain the only undefeated teams in the Section 1 Mixed draw after round two, with both posting 4-2 wins last Saturday. Ocean Grove’s top mixed players started against Highton in the same way they finished last weekend – with long sets – taking the first two mixed rubbers 7-5, 7-6. Highton fought back in the men’s and ladies’ taking both sets 6-1, but the reverse mixed both went to Ocean Grove 6-3, 6-4, earning the young team second place on the ladder. The side is just one point behind ladder leader Grovedale, which defeated Newcomb on Saturday. Bianca Duff asserted herself as number one lady for Grovedale, losing only four games in her three sets, while Jai Bosnjak took his two sets. Barwon Heads defeated St Alban’s 5-1 in a tighter match than the final score indicated. With a total of 63 games, St Alban’s challenged Barwon Heads in every set, but only won the ladies’ rubber 6-4. In Geelong’s premier men’s tournament, Hamlyn Park remains undefeated after the second round. The side backed up its 6-0 win against Ocean Grove with a 5-1 victory over Barwon Heads on Saturday. The match started close with a tie-break win to Hamlyn Park, but Ben and Charlie Reid (no relation) gave the lead to Barwon Heads with a 6-2 win. From there, Hamlyn Park took the final four sets comfortably. Clifton Springs is in second position in Section 1 after a 4-2 win over Geelong East Uniting. Clifton Springs took the first two sets 6-3, 6-1, but East Uniting fought back, with the teams taking a set apiece 6-4. With the final two sets split, Clifton Springs took the win. Ocean Grove hit back after a 6-0 loss in round one, downing Highton at home. Grove fought hard to take the first four sets 6-1, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4 for the win. The Highton players refused to give up in the dead rubbers, winning both 7-5. Surfcoast Torquay had a bye. Rain halted play in last Tuesday’s round 12 of Tennis Geelong’s midweek competition. Meanwhile, youngsters from Bannockburn, Barwon Heads, Clifton Springs, Geelong Lawn, Grovedale, Highton, Lara and Surf Coast got their first taste of tennis in the seven-week Orange Ball competition. The ‘orange ball’ games are designed to introduce children to competition tennis on a reduced size court with lower compression balls.
