Scoop of joy in lockdown Geelong’s Mr Pro Whipp has been melting the hearts of birthday boys and girls – young and young-at-heart – during Victoria’s latest snap lockdown. The ice cream man, also known as Ben Ramos, covered about 320 kilometres over the past weekend alone delivering scoops of joy to 60 Geelong locals. “I even had an 80-year-old,” Ben said. “His birthday party got cancelled, so a neighbour booked me to come out and visit. “I didn’t quite know what to expect, but he was as excited as a five-year-old. “He was dancing around to the music with a big smile on his face.” Lara’s Mitch Raggatt also got a surprise visit on Tuesday for his eighth birthday. “He was inside doing home-schooling and all of a sudden he hears the ice cream music,” Ben said. “He didn’t know I was there to visit him. When the kids realise it’s all for them they get super excited!” For details search ‘Mr Pro Whipp’ online. MITCH AND, INSET, WITH BEN RAMOS

‘Stay away’ Melburnians Geelong community leaders have urged Melburnians not to sneak down the highway to take advantage of eased COVID-19 restrictions beginning today in regional Victoria. “Please do the right thing; observe the rules,” said Giulia Baggio, chief executive of municipal alliance G21. “It’s a short period to stay close to home and help our regional communities remain COVID-free, so we can all get back to COVID-normal.” Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher and Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine

executive director Brett Ince reiterated the call, as Melburnians face yet another seven days in lockdown. “To our Melbourne friends; we look forward to welcoming you back to our special region,” Cr Asher said. “But please help keep your community safe by staying at home and following the restrictions.” Mr Ince said: “We look forward to welcoming Melburnian visitors when it’s safe to do so”. The calls come after many Melburnians fled to holiday homes or drove down the highway without an approved reason during 2020 lockdowns to take advantage of more relaxed restrictions in regional Victoria.

Our family have been proudly conducting funerals in Geelong for four generations. We are honoured to still be serving the Geelong community as a family owned and operated business.

Ms Baggio, Cr Asher and Mr Ince welcomed the easing of restrictions as “fantastic news” for local residents and businesses. But they warned the initial seven-day lockdown and eased restrictions in regional Victoria would continue to impact the hospitality, retail, tourism, arts and events industries. “Those industries will be the most impacted for weeks and even months to come,” Mr Ince said. Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ben Flynn agreed. “I think the Geelong business community felt the strong statewide lockdown was a disproportionate response, given there were no

516 Stone Wash

cases in [regional Victoria],” he said. “While we support a health response, we want the data to drive that response.” Mr Flynn welcomed a combined $459 million in state government grants for Victorian businesses impacted by the lockdown. Federal government yesterday announced a temporary COVID disaster payment, but this is only available to Melburnians. “We’d welcome any federal government support on top of the state government support already proposed,” Mr Flynn said. “We encourage everyone to get out and support our local businesses – whether it’s going out for dinner or purchasing something online.”

Anglesea COVID-19 testing surge By Luke Voogt

“The Anglesea community have turned up in droves and are to be commended for their Anglesea locals “turned up in droves” for commitment  to  keeping  their  community  COVID-19  testing,  according  to  Barwon  safe,” Barwon Health public affairs director Health, after authorities announced four Kate Bibby said. Ms Bibby said the pop-up site would be open  exposure sites in the town from last week. More than 280 people were tested at Barwon today, from 8am to 6pm, and would remain Health’s  newly-opened  pop-up  testing  site  at  open “as long as necessary over the coming Anglesea  Senior  Citizens  Club  from  1pm  to  days”. The community response comes after 8pm on Wednesday. About another 250 people were tested by Barwon  South  West  Public  Health  Unit  1pm yesterday, with the clinic open until 6pm. director Eugene Athan on Tuesday announced There was also expanded testing capacity the newly-identified exposure sites. The sites relate to a Melburnian who recently created at Lorne, Torquay and Norlane.

tested positive, but was asymptomatic when they travelled to Anglesea between last Tuesday and Thursday (May 25 to 27), Professor Athan said. He urged anyone who visited Anglesea Golf Club Bistro between 6pm and 7.30pm on May 25, to get tested and to quarantine at home for 14 days. Along with that ‘tier one’ exposure site, Barwon Health listed three other ‘tier two’ exposure sites. These include: • Anglesea  Landfill  and  Transfer  Station  between 9.20am and 9.35am on May 25, • IGA Anglesea between 10.30am and 11.15am

on May 27, and • Oaks  Bakery  Café  between  10.30am  and  11.00am on May 27. People who visited these sites between the hours specified must get tested and quarantine  until they receive a negative result, Professor Athan said. “If you have any symptoms, please go and get  tested for COVID,” he said. Business closure leaves a vacuum Joseph was born in Hong Kong in 1949 and moved  to  Nauru  with  his  family  for  his  dad’s  work before migrating to Australia in the late  1960s. He was conscripted for national service in his new home country, but did not go to Vietnam as he was part of the second-last intake. For  20  years  he  ran  Geelong’s  first  Chinese  grocer, before selling the business and travelling across the US in a Winnebago with his family,  he said. Unsure what to do when he got home,  he had a go at fixing his own vacuum cleaner.  Upon  discovering  a  lack  of  local  repairers,

he  went  to  Caufield  to  study  the  appliances,  beginning his 30-year career. “There are so many vacuums out there and there’s always one breaking down,” he said.  “When COVID-19 came I had a lot of people  come to me buying bags. They were cleaning up their houses because they had nothing else to do!” He  reckons  he  has  worked  on  tens  of  thousands of vacuums over the years. “I’ve  got  so  many  loyal  consumers,  it’s  incredible,” he said.

Belmont repairman Joseph Lam is set to leave a  big vacuum in the community when he closes his business after more than 30 years. But at age 72, the grandfather and vacuum cleaner specialist has decided to retire and call the “end of an era” later this month. “I  don’t  look  like  a  72-year-old;  everybody  tells me I look about 50,” he said. “I just want  to thank all my customers from over the years.   “That’s what I’ll miss – people in Geelong are  so friendly. They’ll always ask, ‘do you want a  coffee?’ and I’ll be like ‘no thanks, I’ve got a job  to do. If I’ve got time afterwards, I’ll have one’.

Avalon  has  emerged  as  a  front-runner  for Victoria’s planned quarantine facility with the airport awaiting an “imminent” announcement on the plans today. An aviation industry source yesterday told the Independent they believed federal government  was  more  likely  to  choose  the airport than state government’s preferred site at Mickleham. Acting Premier James Merlino yesterday indicated either site would work “equally” well. “We’ve got two sites; Mickleham is our  preferred.  Avalon  would  work  equally  as well and that is our alternative,” Mr Merlino said. “That is a call from the federal government. “The  federal  government  just  need  to  give us the tick on the site and the tick on  the funding, and we will crack on and get  this thing built.” The facility will replace Victoria’s hotel quarantine program, which has been the origin of multiple outbreaks in the state  since COVID-19 first hit. Both Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings and Fox Special Projects  chief  executive  Ari  Suss  said  federal  government had yet to inform them of the decision. Mr Giddings said he expected federal government to make an  announcement on its decision today. Speaking to radio station 3AW, federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg declined to confirm  the  commonwealth’s  preferred  site. “[The announcement] is imminent and that’s all I can say,” he said. “Avalon does have some very positive characteristics to it, obviously being near an airport, and that’s relevant in this case.”

Gallery bestows prize Melbourne-based artist Diena Georgetti has won the $30,000 2021 Geelong contemporary art prize for her painting AMPERSAND 2020. The painting’s “conceptual poise and eloquent formal composition” drew in the judging panel, including eminent art historians and curators, Jenepher Duncan and Grazia Gunn, and Geelong Gallery director Jason Smith. The synthetic polymer painting on canvas extends Georgetti’s idiosyncratic approach to picture-making, as she juxtaposes abstract images and references to art historical precedents, along with modernist aesthetics, including design and fashion. The judges agreed that a relevant

contemporary humanism pervades AMPERSAND, opening-up this precisely constructed but poetic image to many readings and interpretations. They chose the painting from 28 finalists, after the gallery received more than 600 entries from across Australia. The acquisitive prize assists the ongoing growth of the gallery’s collection, while promoting contemporary Australian artists. Geelong Gallery will remain closed until at least today due to COVID-19 restrictions. But the gallery plans to display work from the 2021 Geelong contemporary art prize until August 22, once permitted to reopen. Details: www.geelonggallery.org.au

Racist slur targets child By Luke Voogt

Racist graffiti at a Point Lonsdale skate park has prompted three primary schools and Queenscliff’s council to condemn the “aberrant” behaviour. Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff and St Aloysius Catholic primary schools took a stand against racism in a collective letter to their school communities this week. “It’s unacceptable in any day, time or place, as simple as that,” Point Lonsdale Primary School principal Fay Agterhuis told the Independent on Monday. “As a school and a group of principals we teach mutual respect, and so we call out disrespect.”

The Borough of Queenscliffe last Thursday removed the graffiti, which Ms Agterhuis described as “a racist comment”. The letter from the three principals calls for community members to call out the “aberrant behaviour”. “We are … appalled and disappointed to see racist graffiti targeting one of our young community members appearing at the skate park,” the letter read. “Talk to your children and families about racism and the pain it causes, talk about defacement of public properties and the impact it has on us all. “This is not who we are as a community, not as schools, students and families. We are all so much better than this.”

In a statement last Thursday, Borough of Queenscliffe mayor Ross Ebbels said council had removed the graffiti and reported the vandalism to police. “To say I am shocked and appalled is an understatement,” Cr Ebbels said. “I have spoken to the family of the young person targeted by the graffiti and reassured them that we will not accept this behaviour. “We are proud to stand with them against this appalling and criminal act. “All of us, whenever we encounter racist behaviour and attitudes, have an obligation to call it out and condemn it.” Cr Ebbels urged anyone with information to contact Bellarine Police station: 5256 2698.

The National Celtic Folk Festival in Portarlington will not go ahead on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend due to Victoria’s latest snap COVID-19 lockdown, organisers have announced. “We regret to announce that the National Celtic Folk Festival 2021 will not be going ahead on the June long weekend,” they said in a statement on the event’s website. “This has been a very difficult decision for us.” Organisers cancelled the event, previously scheduled to begin on June 11, following advice and discussions with stakeholders.

this is heartbreaking for all of us - event website

They hope to possibly reschedule the event in the coming months. Organisers pledged to refund all tickets over coming weeks. “If we do reschedule for another date, our current ticket holders will be notified for the first opportunity to purchase a new ticket,” they said. “Artists, performers, volunteers, suppliers, market stalls and partners – we will contact you individually. “We are just so disappointed, as we know you will be. Please bear with us as we work towards getting in touch with you. “This is heartbreaking for all of us, considering we had to cancel our 18th birthday in 2020. “We were feeling excited about going ahead in 2021 and buoyed by everyone’s support and encouragement. “We know this outcome will impact many of your plans, and this only makes it harder and more disappointing to have made this decision.” Luke Voogt

New life for Norlane ‘icon’ Great-grandmother Sandra Anderson was the first of four generations in her family to swim at Waterworld in Norlane. She shares her excitement with Luke Voogt about a “long-awaited” project to redevelop the site, now on the “cusp of reality”.

L

ife-long Norlane resident Sandra Anderson was among the first of thousands of teens to spend summers at Waterworld in the late 1960s. “As kids we used to ride to the Norlane pool,” she said. “You’d towel yourself off and by the time you were home, you’d be hot again.” Sandra, 67, is the first of four generations in her family who have enjoyed the once-iconic pool, built in 1965. “My kids would ask, ‘can we go to the pool mum?’ and I would say, ‘yep, here’s some money’,” she said. “They’d take some chips and they were gone for the day. “I never had to worry about them. They would meet their friends there and come home for dinner at night.” Decades on, Sandra has enjoyed taking her grandchildren and, most recently, great-granddaughter Elly to Waterworld. “At one stage I was doing water aerobics there too but I think I got more exercise taking Elly,” she laughed. “My granddaughter Felicity takes Elly to the pool whenever she gets the chance.” Felicity lives in neighbouring suburb Corio, as does Sandra’s daughter Pauline, a regular visitor to Waterworld’s gym prior to COVID-19. But Waterworld, like Sandra, has seen better days, she admits. “It’s well past its use by date,” Sandra said. “I’m getting up in age too with arthritis in my knees. “I use a walking stick; my left knee is bad and my right knee is getting just as bad.” Waterworld, on the other hand, is struggling with an operational loss of about $1 million a year and increasing costs to repair the “deteriorating” building, according to council. These costs are growing by five per cent annually, according to a 2017 council business case for a new preventative health facility to redevelop the site and its “aging assets”. While refurbished sections of the building are in good condition, “the age of the facility” has caused cracks in its “exterior and interior walls”, according to the document. This, coupled with declining membership due to competition from private gyms and pools, has limited “Waterworld’s ability to remain financially sustainable”, according to council. Waterworld’s second-most profitable revenue stream, Learn to Swim programs, cannot keep pace with demand and its design limits the ability to expand the program, council said. In 2010-11, 368,874 people visited Waterwold, dropping by almost a quarter to 281,318 in 2014-15. By comparison, Waurn Ponds facility Leisurelink, built in 2010, has about 1.2 million visits per year generating enough revenue to cover operating and maintenance requirements. In a review this February, council reaffirmed

Waterworld Leisure Centre’s “ageing community facilities” do “not meet the needs” of current or future residents. The review found council’s planned Northern Aquatic and Community Hub redevelopment of the site “will deliver $1.79 of economic benefit for every $1 invested” and attract 600,000 visits per year. The new facility will deliver $111 million in preventative health benefits in its first decade of operation, combatting high rates of obesity, “sedentary lifestyles” and psychological stress in the “disadvantaged” north, according to council. In 2018, council removed the iconic Waterworld slide to make way for the redevelopment, several years in the making. “It used to be an icon,” Sandra said. “When you see the big slide, you know you’ve hit Norlane.” But Sandra cannot wait for the new facility, which council says is now “on the cusp of

reality”. “The kids are going to thoroughly enjoy the new slides,” she said. And the slides are just part of the excitement for Sandra. The plans include a 25-metre pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a Learn to Swim pool, a water play area, a spa, a sauna and a steam room. Sandra and husband Maurice, who has a back-related disability, plan to take full advantage of the facilities. “The hydrotherapy pool will do us wonders,” Sandra said. The plans also include a café, a gym, a cycle studio, multi-purpose exercise studios, maternal health suites, a creche and a 400-person hall that council says “will be the best of its kind in greater Geelong”. Last month council decided to allocate $21.84 million to the project, on top of its $23 million already committed.

If approved in the 2021-22 budget, this would bring council’s commitment to the $61.6 million project to $44.84 million. Council also plans to allocate $8.26 million from a federal government community infrastructure program, and recently secured $8.5 million from state government for the project. Council hopes its extra commitment will help secure another $10 million in federal government’s Building Better Regions Fund, which requires projects to be fully-funded and ready for construction. If successful, council’s total commitment would reduce to $34.84 million. Sandra agrees with council that the “long-awaited” facility is desperately needed. “People are living longer and want to be more active,” Sandra said. “We need this sort of facility to keep living at home longer. “There’s going to be a lot of suburbs that will benefit from this facility.”

Aged care vaccine blitz launched By Luke Voogt Geelong’s mass vaccination hub at Norlane is among 10 centres taking part in a statewide blitz to immunise private aged care and disability workers. The blitz, which began on Wednesday and continues until Sunday, gives workers at private aged care facilities and in the residential disability sector, both overseen by the Commonwealth, priority access at walk-in vaccination hubs. “Victorians have come out in force to get vaccinated in the past week,” Health Minister Martin Foley said on Tuesday. “Now we’re stepping in to make sure those who work in our

most vulnerable settings have priority access to a vaccine to protect our most at-risk groups. “We’ve seen first-hand the devastation coronavirus causes among our aged and disability care population – alongside getting tested and isolating, vaccination is the best way to protect the most vulnerable Victorians.” The blitz aims to address lower vaccination rates in private aged care facilities, which are significantly more susceptible to ongoing outbreaks, according to state government. Aged care and disability workers are already eligible to be vaccinated at state-run hubs, including the old Ford factory in Norlane, and can continue to attend at any time during opening hours.

But the five-day blitz will give priority access to any private aged care and disability workers presenting evidence of employment at walk-in vaccination hubs across Victoria between 9am and 4pm, without needing to book in advance, according to state government. National Disability Insurance Scheme participants and other community members currently eligible for the immunisation program can also access vaccinations at state-run sites, according to government. The Commonwealth will continue to be responsible for “in-reach” vaccination in disability residential settings, with state authorities to provide support to help workers access state-run vaccination sites.

Staff are eligible for either the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines depending on their age. “Active queue management” will ensure they have priority access, according to state government. Victoria had a record 95,676 COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the week ending last Sunday (May 30), an increase of 66 per cent on the previous week. State government expanded vaccine eligibility at state-run sites to those aged 40-49 on May 28. So far more than 22,000 Victorians in that age group have received their first dose. State government encourages eligible people other than those covered in the blitz to book via the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398.

Hundreds of locals queueing for the COVID-19 vaccine faced wait times of up to 90 minutes, prompting renewed calls to book ahead. Barwon Health on Tuesday confirmed that wait times for walk-in vaccinations at the old Ford factory hub were reaching 90 minutes during the busiest parts of the day. The queue stretched more than 100 metres across the carpark and out the front entry of the mass vaccination hub on Tuesday morning as state government announced a new immunisation blitz for private aged care and disability workers. The blitz, which began on Wednesday and continues until Sunday, will give priority to these workers for walk-in appointments. Last week Barwon Health encouraged locals to book ahead due to high demand and limited walk-in availability after state government opened vaccinations to over 40s. “Booking a vaccination on the Barwon Health website is the best way to secure an appointment time and avoid disappointment,” Barwon Health spokesperson Kate Bibby said last week. Ms Bibby this week again encouraged locals to book at barwonhealth.org.au/coronavirus/ booking-a-vaccination or by phoning 1800 675 398. “We ask that people continue to get tested with any COVID-19 symptoms, be patient when booking a vaccination, stay informed, and follow the Department of Health’s restrictions to help protect the community,” she said. MY GEELONG Ukraine expat and software engineer Kateryna Tsysarenko co-founded social enterprise AI on Spectrum to help neurodivergent kids make better social connections. She speaks to Luke Voogt about life in the former USSR and using apps to help others. Tell us about you… I’m 37 and originally from Kyiv, Ukraine. I relocated to the Surf Coast almost three years ago. My partner Tim and I live in Jan Juc and just got engaged after four and a half years together. The daughter of a military man, my family travelled a lot across the former USSR, and at least six times I’ve needed to adapt to a new school, new friends and a new way of life. I think this has helped me find calm in uncomfortable situations and encouraged me to seek new challenges. In Ukraine, I spent my free time immersed in wakesurfing and yoga. Now I’m trying to get comfortable in the big, green waves here and enjoying time on the mat at It’s All Yoga in Torquay. I have a bachelor of computer science and love working with people. I started my career in advertising before moving into TV as an executive producer. A decade later, my interest in technology and social change brought me back to my roots, and I began developing iOS (Apple) applications in 2018. I co-founded my first venture in Australia, AI on Spectrum, in 2020. What is Al on Spectrum? AI on Spectrum builds better social connections in children, particularly neurodivergent children. Back in Ukraine, I volunteered 10 per cent of my time to social enterprises, which continued here in Australia, as some new friends and I came across an interesting idea for an application, Emodo, that we’re currently developing. The app helps children build social competencies, learn emotional intelligence and improve their wellbeing via interactive games

We plan to make this app free for children everywhere, in as many languages as possible, and focus on making it available in countries with little or no support for struggling kids. I have at least eight good friends in Ukraine with neurodiverse children and have learned first-hand how hard it is to get any support over there. We won the Startspace HQ Future Founders Festival’s pitch competition in 2020. The prize money helped fund ongoing expenses for the software we’re using, but the main thing is that we became part of their community. What are your favourite things to do locally? I love going to Geelong waterfront and watching the yachts, and visiting The Pivotonian Cinema to watch arthouse films and eat popcorn. My favourite coffee is from Surf Coast Coffee Roasters. I love driving down the Great Ocean Road – I’d do it every day if I could! I like Fisho’s restaurant on the Torquay Esplanade, and my favourite pub is in Aireys Inlet. How are you coping with COVID-19? It was a bit of a struggle early on, to be isolated from friends and colleagues in Melbourne, but adopting new communication technologies like Clubhouse and having regular stand-ups actually increased our effectiveness overall. What’s something about you that people might not know? At age nine, I dreamed of becoming an accountant. I imagined that it’s just working with numbers, no people involved.

The sounds of adventure await By Luke Voogt

Emma Watson gets ready to take listeners on an adventure in new radio series Theatia Podsie. (Supplied)

struggles through anecdotes, like an uncle who takes out his glass eye to surprise his nephews and nieces. “They’re very funny and heart-warming,” Watson said. Watson and her fellow writers created Theatia Podsie with circumstances exactly like

Victoria’s latest snap lockdown in mind. The project received a Geelong council grant last November for that very purpose, Watson explained. “It was all around contingency plans and, ‘what if this happens?’” she said. “The whole premise of Theatia Podsie was it was theatre

A “grand adventure” to the other side of the world – and the galaxy – awaits in a new radio play series for locals stuck at home in lockdown. Listeners of Theatia Podsie can descend down the rabbit hole, explore archaeological digs or fly around the world in the 13-play series from the comfort of their homes. “That’s the beauty of a radio play – you’re not bound by geography,” said director of four of the plays, Emma Watson. “We go from outer space to fantasy to cursed relatives in France to around the Australian dinner table.” The sounds of bunnies hopping and Alice splashing in her own tears create a surreal world in listeners’ minds for Watson’s rendition of children’s classic Alice in Wonderland. “You can hear the door mouse fall asleep in his cup of tea, and the Mad Hatter getting so nervous he bites his tea cup in half,” Watson said. Trains click-clacking, boats chugging and foghorns blaring take listeners on an adventure Around the World in 80 Days, while next they plunge into darkness in vampire thriller Carmilla to the sound of bats, bells tolling and “slithering creatures”. In another four of the plays, writer Christine Davey pays tribute to a friend of hers and Watson’s who was diagnosed with cancer last year, but has since recovered. “When someone’s unwell, you visit, bring them food or take them out for dinner,” Watson said. “With COVID-19 it’s very difficult to do these things. Christine’s an amazing writer, and she gave her the gift of these stories instead.” The plays tell of their friend’s triumphs and

performed live with a live recording – like the 1940s talkies.” The audio format also had the added benefit of being more inclusive for actors who do not fit physical characteristics for certain roles onstage, Watson said. “It just takes away all that prejudice for visuals.” The series features 28 actors, plus sound technicians and directors, with four actors per play. “Most of these people have never done this sort of theatre before,” Watson said. Victoria’s latest snap lockdown has forced organisers to cancel live audiences for the five recording sessions, initially scheduled to begin today, and refund tickets. But organisers still plan to record the radio plays, dependent on Victoria’s COVID-19 situation, in coming days or weeks. “We’re trying to hold onto [today] because we’ve booked Waurn Ponds Community Hall,” Watson said. “It’s very big, so it’s easy to socially-distance the cast. “It’s a wonderful creative venue and they lose revenue every time things shut down. The hall’s committee use any profits to maintain the venue.” The four groups behind the audio theatre festival, Greater Geelong Creative Inc, Skin of Our Teeth Productions, Someone New Theatre Company and Wildmoth Sound Production, have various contingencies in place. And Watson vowed to record the plays, even if restrictions force them to postpone the festival. “We’re flexible, nimble and positive – we just keep doing.” Details: ggcreativeinc.com.au

To dream big, our kids need the best start in life. It’s why the Victorian Government is rolling out Three-Year-Old Kinder across the state in 2022. This means new kindergartens, upgraded facilities and new teaching jobs.

TOP PICKS OF THE WEEK

FBI TEN/WIN, 9pm

SATURDAY

FAST & FURIOUS 7 NINE, 8.40pm

For fans, this is the final chance to see Paul Walker (pictured left) as Brian O’Conner after the actor was tragically killed in a 2013 car accident during production of the film. Fans of the series will know what to expect: fast cars, hot women, cartoonish bad guys and Vin Diesel (pictured right) getting emotional while swigging a beer on a porch. Need more convincing? Diesel reckons “there is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing”. So, yeah.

SATURDAY

AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST SINGALONG SBS, 8.30pm

Tune in for a singing event like no other: the title of this one-off special sums it up to a tee. Hosted by Julia Zemiro (Home Delivery, right) and Miranda Tapsell (Love Child), this is a live, twohour extravaganza inviting everyone to flex their vocal chords and get lost in some classic Aussie songs. The Hunters and Collectors’ hit Throw Your Arms Around Me will take centre stage, with the lead singer, Mark Seymour, joining the broadcast at the tail end for a performance. Guided by Pub Choir founder Astrid Jorgensen, this is a unique event that anyone can be involved in from the comfort of their lounge room. Put on your best trackies and prepare to sing your heart out.

The Glade – as the colony of led – young boys tell him it’s called nd houses an ever-changing and dangerous maze. The boyss lay out the law and warn him there is no escape. But where’s the fun in that, hey? There are fight scenes, a love interest (Kaya Scodelario) and an ending that left the sequels wide open for the taking. O’Brien is great as the leading man so expect to see more of him. For younger viewers.

Season three of this serviceable police procedural from Dick Wolf (Law & Order) returns tonight. It has been interesting to see how popular shows deal with the pandemic and whether they address the global catastrophe or pretend it never happened. Shows that have incorporated COVID-19 into their storylines, such as The Resident, have generally received a lukewarm reaction. In a smart move, FBI gives a nod to the medical emergency then gets on with the show. In “Never Trust a Stranger”, nononsense detective Tiffany Wallace (Katherine Renee Turner) joins the crew and Missy Peregrym (left) returns after maternity leave, resuming work as agent Maggie Bell. Seniors share their stories

Residents rally over tea Elderly Grovedale and St Albans Park residents rallied over cake and tea last Thursday to raise more than $500 for cancer research and support. Jan Altman, a resident of three years at Ingenia Gardens’ St Albans Park neighbourhood, continued her years-long support of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. “I try to get involved wherever I can – even when I was living at another community in South Australia, I made sure to do my bit and help organise the event each year,” she said. “It’s nice to see everyone get together to connect over morning tea and support a fantastic cause. “I think this year’s event will be a standout because I was able to organise a performance from one of our amazing residents, Barb Williams, who is an incredible opera singer – I

think we’ll remember this event for quite some time.” Jan’s husband Neil runs the social group at the St Albans Park neighbourhood. “We’re both big believers in getting the whole community involved in a range of different events,” Jan said. “I started a crafting group and I’ve been speaking to two very talented painters who live here, and I’d love to get some art classes going. “I’m forever thinking of ways to connect with my neighbours – I really enjoy organising events for my community, so we can all get the most out of our retirement.” Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea raises funds for Cancer Council, a national charity that raises money for research and to support people battling the disease. Victoria is celebrating seniors living in aged care with a new program designed to showcase the resilience shown by aged care residents and staff over the past year. ‘Recognising senior Victorians’ shines a light on the efforts of both residents and staff during the global pandemic and celebrates the contributions of older Victorians throughout their lives. People living in aged care have great life stories to tell and the ‘Victorian Seniors Festival’ has worked with aged care facilities to interview and capture the life stories of 50 aged care residents for the community to enjoy. Recognising senior Victorians also includes ‘shout-outs’ in support of staff and volunteers who have gone above and beyond while working in Victoria’s aged care facilities in 2020. It celebrates great stories of seniors such as Gay Halstead, chosen as a hostess to

Dinner for one

Prawns with linguine Ingredients: Coarse salt and ground pepper 60 grams linguine (about a 2cm-wide handful) 1 tablespoon cold butter, cut into pieces 1 garlic clove, minced Cayenne pepper to taste 1/3 cup dry white wine 125 grams large prawns, peeled and deveined 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Fresh parsley leaves, for garnish Directions: 1. In a large saucepan of boiling salted water, cook pasta until al dente.

Now what’s needed is an elegant recipe, one that delivers on bags of taste that belie its essential simplicity. No point sweating it; that’ll just fog up the crystal and ruin the mood. The recipe below fits the fill nicely, so go on…get your self-pamper on.

Cooking for a crowd can be challenging, but cooking just for yourself is no picnic either. Most recipes are designed for four people, and quartering a recipe just seems a hassle, meagre and almost pointless – plus somehow in the conversion process, the taste even seems to change. However, there are alone times when the urge hits for a really tasty lunch or dinner, even if it you cook it just for you. And if a good excuse is needed to crack the bottle of white you’ve been saving, this is it. Giving your cooking a sense of occasion can do wonders for morale, while adding a candle to the table and using a crystal glass for the wine will take it to the next level – and don’t forget music.

Let genU give you respite

2. Meanwhile, in a small non-stick pan, melt half the butter over medium heat. Add garlic and pinch of cayenne; cook until fragrant – for about a minute. 3. Raise heat to medium-high; add wine. Cook until reduced by a third, about a minute. 4. Add prawns and season with salt and pepper; cook until opaque throughout – one-two minutes. Remove skillet from heat; swirl in lemon juice and remaining butter. 5. Add pasta and toss to combine. Serve, topped with parsley.

Lara’s Margaret Upton fell in love with Australia after a magical caravan trip around the country. After living in England, Margaret and her husband Keith, first visited Australia in 2003, bought a caravan and travelled across Australia. The couple returned four years later for a more permanent stay. “We went back to England, sold the house then we bought a house here, bought a caravan and then off we went again to see Australia,” Margaret says. After her husband passed away, Margaret connected with genU social groups which have provided her with new friendships and enjoyable activities. “I was left on my own, and a friend said come with us to this group,” she says. “I was a bit dubious at first, but I’m glad I joined and we have some great days out.” Margaret takes part in day trips, enjoys arts and crafts and loves the company of her friends. “I’ve been going for four years now, so I know everyone really well and it’s good fun. “If you’re thinking about joining in, I’d say come along because you’ll have a good day.” genU offers centre-based day respite services in Geelong and Ocean Grove. Both locations offer social activities, support to promote independent living and outdoor gardens. Activities can be tailored to suit individual interests, all sites employ COVIDSafe practices, and additional security measures are in place for peace of mind. Community living protects against social isolation With the COVID-19 pandemic, the past 12 months have reinforced just how important feeling connected to others is for our health and wellbeing. It is now more important than ever to take steps to avoid social isolation. It goes without saying that feeling lonely and isolated doesn’t feel great, but what you might not know is just how much of a health risk it can be. Research has linked experiencing loneliness to an increased risk of health problems such as heart disease and depression. On the other hand, research also confirms that people with strong social relationships are more likely to be healthier and live longer. According to the Australian Loneliness Report, the coronavirus has left a lot of older Australians feeling lonely, with a survey showing that almost one in three people aged between 60 and 85 felt isolated during lockdown. It was, however, quite a different story for residents of Ingenia Gardens communities. A separate survey conducted around the same time, not only found that 82 per cent of Ingenia Gardens residents had a positive outlook on life, but 90 per cent were moderately to extremely satisfied with the sense of community they felt.

It takes a village Nicole Jentz, portfolio manager residential communities at Ingenia Communities, puts such positive survey results down to several things. “Our residents are able to draw on the strong sense of community and belonging that has helped them navigate the past 12 months of ups and downs,” she explains. “Simply knowing that they were surrounded by like-minded people, in a community where they’d already established relationships, has made a big difference.”

Community living decreases loneliness. (Supplied)

Coping with life’s transitions It’s not just during these challenging times where community living protects against social isolation. “Our residents are from all walks and different stages of life,” says Jentz, “and our weekly program of social events really reflects that.

“Residents tell us that being able to have these clubs and activities at their fingertips makes life easy. “Many of our residents are still very active outside our communities, but the fact of not having to venture outside the community also appeals to many people.” For more information about the benefits of

Bet she was glad she wasn’t born in WA’s Delicate Nobby and became Delia Obby. 4/ John Gorton, he of protruding ear and dinged-up face that marked him as a crashed fighter plane pilot in WWII. Protruding ears were sadly still the fashion when Billy McMahon succeeded him. 5/ Lyndon B. Johnson, who only showed up to promote the unpopular Vietnam War. “All the way with LBJ” was his slogan, which nowadays would likely be met with “Fly away LBJ”. His wife’s name was Lady Bird but she wouldn’t fly away either. 6/ Christmas Eve, 1974. Stop worrying and take action Audiologist Ashlee Willis from Geelong Hearing Aid Services is putting out a ‘call to action’ to anyone who thinks they may be experiencing hearing loss. “Hearing is often overlooked when it comes to checking on our health,” Ashlee says. “But it’s a very important part of life, and there are many reasons why people should get their hearing tested regularly.”

Geelong Hearing Aid Services, 96 High Street, Belmont. Opens 9am-5pm Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 5243 1019 or www.qualtone.com.au

Six reasons to get your hearing checked 1. Hearing loss left untreated has been shown to increase the risk of developing dementia. 2. Hearing loss has been shown to increase the risks of falling. 3. Hearing loss has been shown to contribute to mental health conditions including anxiety and depression. 4. Early diagnosis and intervention in hearing loss is vital in effective treatment of many ear-related conditions. 5. Annual hearing checks will give you peace of mind that you are taking care of your hearing health. 6. A Hearing Health Check takes less than an hour, is painless and easy to do.

Symptoms of hearing loss • You can hear, but not understand • You don’t always hear the phone ring • You are turning the TV up louder than usual • Everyone seems to be mumbling • Pain or discharge in the ear • A blocked feeling in one or both ears. “If anyone’s wondering whether it’s worth getting checked, I encourage them to stop wondering and take action by calling us today,” Ashlee concludes.

One size does not fit all As the engine room of every home, the kitchen assumes great importance in any renovation or new build when it comes to design and aesthetics, expressive as it is of the homeowner’s personal décor style and ‘must-haves’. Family-run and multi-award-winning Advanced Cabinetry has been part of the new-kitchen scene since 1999, manufacturing kitchen cabinetry in a purpose-built facility and displaying beautiful examples in showrooms in both Geelong and Ballarat. Owners Clint and Tanya Smith say the business, servicing Geelong and the wider region, has been built on in-house design and best practice, coupled with a strong customer service ethos. “Our showrooms offer full-sized kitchen displays so customers get a genuine feel for what they could have in their home,” Clint says. “Cabinetry features all the latest hardware and finishes, and can be built to suit all styles – from traditional through to utterly contemporary. “On our manufacturing side, qualified cabinet makers oversee all operations, with the latest technologies in machinery and processes in place. The facility is pretty impressive in all aspects. “And as a Registered Building Contractor (CDBL 51288), we provide warranty insurance and are a member of several industry-related groups. This provides our clients with peace of mind, knowing they are dealing with a very professional crew.”

Journey to a dream kitchen “When working with an Advanced Cabinetry designer, expect to enjoy the journey watching your dream kitchen come to life,” explains Tanya. “When planning arguably the most important – and most-used – room, you want

to get it right, with the end result a functional, beautiful space to be enjoyed for years to come.” Here’s how the journey unfolds: 1. Meet the designer – in the showroom or your home – to discuss all details 2. A kitchen concept is created, including a 3D coloured render video walk-through 3. A formal check measure is carried out 4. Kitchen is drawn to detail 5. Contract is prepared 6. These steps could all take as little as a few weeks to as long as several months, dependent on the need for speed and the stage of the project. 7. The magic happens and it all comes to full-colour life, with the installation ready between 6-12 weeks dependent on materials selected 8. The installation manager certifies the job is complete. “We’re not a DIY or retro-fit service. We custom-make kitchens to individual space and budget, understanding that everyone’s home is different and one size doesn’t actually fit all,” Clint says in conclusion. To book an appointment to meet with a designer, call the number below or visit the website. Be sure to follow Advanced Cabinetry on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Houzz to get some great inspiration. Advanced Cabinetry showrooms are at 19 Church Street, Geelong (open 10am-5pm Monday-Friday, and 9am-3pm Saturday; and 134 Fussell Street, Ballarat (opens 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, and 9am-noon Saturday. If you love your car, your pride and joy, it can be devastating if it’s scratched or damaged, right? But there’s an easy fix at Darby’s Paints in Geelong, the store with the famed Chester the horse statue out front – across the road from even more famous Kardinia Park. Manager Sam Martin says they specialise in preparing aerosols or small touch-up bottles in colours to match any vehicle. “We really understand colour – from simple whites to three-layer pearls and candies and other specialty coatings,” Sam says. “We have thousands of colours that can be made quickly and easily in-store, while you wait. “The colours are mixed from many great brands, such as Glasurit, baslac, Concept and DNA-Genetically Modified Paint – just to name a few. “Cars can be returned to as good as new, easily and effectively.”

Darby’s Paints, a business looking after locals for the past 35 years, has three stores in Victoria, the teams servicing panel shops and commercial vehicle and agricultural manufacturers across the state. A huge range of automotive, industrial and marine-grade paints are in stock, as well as all the tools, accessories and product partners to get the job done right. “Our team members have good reason to be chuffed with the level of service they offer, as well as the level of knowledge and experience they bring to each job,” Sam says. “Customers can have confidence in the advice received – and their car will once again be their pride and joy.” Darby’s Paints, 413 Moorabool Street, Geelong. SPORT Tennis bounces back for next week Geelong’s midweek ladies tennis finals will resume next Tuesday after state government’s latest snap lockdown halted competition this week. “Fortunately, the season can be pushed back one week,” Tennis Geelong president Donna Schoenmaekers said on Wednesday. “The competition was feeling a sense of déjà vu, as summer and winter seasons in 2020 were incomplete due to COVID, so the idea of [this] season heading the same way has all the ladies nervous.” Section 7 will be a match to watch, with Barwon Heads White and Blue both meeting at home. Only two and three games separated both teams in their two clashes during the home and away season. Kimberley Pate was the difference for

White taking her three sets in round 1, while Maura Sweet did the same for Blue in Round 8. Moolap and Grovedale both have current form over St Mary’s in Sections 8 and 9 with wins in their last meetings, while Wandana Heights (Section 1), Portarlington (Section 4), Anglesea (Section 6) and Barwon Heads Blue (Section 7) have also triumphed this season over their forthcoming opponents. Ocean Grove in Section 5 would also like its chances against Surfcoast, with both home and away matches tied at three sets all with only one and two games the difference in each match. Tennis Geelong cancelled round 5 of its junior and senior competitions last Saturday as new COVID-19 cases plunged the state into lockdown.

A strategy for the future By Luke Voogt Municipal alliance G21 and AFL Barwon have unveiled a strategy to increase diversity in local football after women’s participation increased by five times from 2015 to 2019. G21 and AFL Barwon’s Towards 2030: Strategy also seeks to improve facilities, build and retain football and netball participation, and support clubs and their people. The new draft strategy, in partnership with local clubs and councils, is a “refresh” of G21 and AFL Barwon’s Regional Strategy 2015. AFL Barwon has recorded an “exponential increase” of 424 per cent in female football participation, with 65 new teams from 2015 to 2019. The G21 region has had strong population growth and $67 million of investment into football and netball club facilities, including more than 69 projects, according to the organisations. In 2019, AFL Barwon had a higher number of 30 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 4 June, 2021

players per population compared to Victorian regional averages in all age groups. Despite a challenging 2020, overall football and netball participation has increased since then. The organisations released the draft strategy on Monday, as Victoria’s latest COVID-19 lockdown caused local competitions to be cancelled at the weekend. “The draft strategy has highlighted a range of issues for our football and netball communities in the G21 region, particularly related to a strong growth in participation and a female footy boom,” G21 chief executive Giulia Baggio said. “We must continue to drive participation and enhance the experience of all participants,

providing high quality and inclusive facilities. “We want every person who plays netball and footy in our region to feel comfortable and welcome. I urge everyone to have a look at the draft strategy and have their say.” Acting AFL Barwon region general manager Sean Atkinson described the draft strategy as an “incredibly valuable document”. “It’s a great thing for the region, which will guide planning and development moving forward,” Mr Atkinson said. AFL Barwon Commission chairman Craig Keating said the document would build on the success of the 2015 strategy. “It will provide a cohesive framework for community clubs and local and state governments to work together to build sustainable infrastructure that will support participation and growth where it is most needed,” Mr Keating said. The strategy is open for public comment at g21.com.au/about-g21/engagement until July 11.

The five kilometre and two-hour limit has really slowed down reports this week but despite this, we still have a few! The Barwon River mouth at Barwon Heads has seen the best run of silver trevally we’ve seen for a while. Anglers using bait, lure and fly managed good bags of fish within their two hours of permitted fishing time. Salmon and whiting were also caught among the trevally. Anglers that live near a boat ramp have been blessed with the ability to fish from a boat and a number of anglers made use of this at Torquay. Fishing close to the ramp, they caught bags of whiting to 40cm and flathead. Remember if you’re fishing from a boat, the five kilometre limit is measured from your house and not the boat ramp. Locals at Clifton Springs caught squid and whiting in close to the ramp with the new jetty at the ramp also accounting for a few squid too. Salmon are always a great winter option and lately fish to 2kg have been caught from beaches along the coast with Jan Juc being a hot spot. Casting metal lures into the gutters or using half a pilchard or whole bluebait are your best options. The St Helens Boat Ramp rock wall has been producing snapper to 3kg over the last month or so and will make a great fishing option if you live close by. Squid and pilchard are effective baits with the odd flathead being caught as by-catch. Carp, redfin, estuary perch and eels were caught throughout the Barwon River from Breakwater Bridge all the way up to Fyansford by those that live close by. Lures accounted for a number of fish but with the river slightly discoloured from recent rains, the trusty scrub worm will work a treat on all fish mentioned. One dedicated carp angler has suggested throwing out burley at the end of your session to keep the fish in the area if you plan to fish there again the next day, a good way to make the most of your two hours of fishing time. *The five kilometre travel limit and two hour cap on fishing were lifted for regional Victoria from 11.59pm yesterday.
