Dance returns to city streets Geelong locals can discover a hidden world of dance in CBD laneways through the QR codes that are now part of everyday life. The black and white boxes, now “COVID-normal” for employees and diners alike, reveal a series of short movement films showcasing Geelong’s artistic talent, colourful murals and breathtaking views. Dancers glide across city rooftops or past laneway graffiti in the Micro Moves Project, created by producer Helen Duncan, director-choreographer Zoee Marsh and videographer Chris Bryan. “It’s so great to be able to pick our creative tools back up again after a challenging 2020, and we would love your support as we get back into creating art in our city,” Duncan said. “We’re delighted to share our creative work with our local community and we look forward to sharing this unique series.” CBD visitors can explore central Geelong through a different lens in five short films over a one-kilometre walk in the council-sponsored project, which runs until July 16. Regional border patrol By Luke Voogt Police will be out in force to prevent Melburnians breaching COVID-19 restrictions to travel to Geelong and regional Victoria over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The yearly four-day Operation Regal targeting dangerous driving will also support the ongoing Operation Sentinel, aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 into regional Victoria. Despite restrictions easing in metropolitan Melbourne today, residents are still prohibited

the rules. “With two statewide operations under way across the long weekend, motorists can expect to see a bolstered police presence on Victorian roads,” Assistant Commissioner Road Policing Libby Murphy said. “With regional Victorians free to travel across the state, we’re still anticipating a busy weekend on regional roads and major arterials.” Restrictions eased further in regional Victoria today, with residents now allowed to have up to two adults, plus dependents, visit their home per day. Restaurants and cafes can open to a maximum of 150 people for seated

An extra 200 officers per day are already patrolling main arterials and back roads to prevent Melburnians fleeing to take advantage of more relaxed restrictions in regional Victoria. The mobile patrols are using automatic number plate recognition technology to scan registration details and identify vehicles from Melbourne travelling to regional areas. Another 250 police officers are conducting spot checks in public places, businesses and public transport hubs across major regional and rural centres to catch out those flouting

Public outdoor gatherings are now limited to 20. Indoor sport, including gyms, can also reopen with limits on patron numbers. Meanwhile, senior female football and under-19s football and netball will resume across Geelong tomorrow. AFL Barwon plans to resume senior and reserves football and netball in the GFNL and BFNL on June 19, dependent on restrictions.

Council centres begin to reopen Geelong council is set to reopen its indoor swimming pools, recreation facilities and community centres as COVID-19 restrictions ease across regional Victoria today. Council also plans to reopen the National Wool Museum gallery and Geelong Carousel as a result of the changes, subject to density requirements and visitor caps. “The easing of restrictions in regional Victoria are welcome and appropriate, given there are no confirmed cases here,” deputy mayor Trent Sullivan said. “They will give our community a boost, from both an economic

and social standpoint, and allow for a host of activity to resume.” Council will make announcements about the reopening of individual facilities and the conditions of their operation in coming days. While a range of competitive sport, recreation and community activity can resume, authorities will manage strict participant and visitor limits. “Community sport plays an important role in the physical and mental health of our community, so we’re glad senior competitions can resume,” Cr Sullivan said.

He encouraged locals to back Geelong businesses by shopping, ordering takeaway and dining out. “We continue to urge the greater Geelong community to support each other by buying locally and enjoying experiences within our own region,” he said. He also encouraged regional Victorians to visit Geelong over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with Melburnians still prohibited from travelling to regional Victoria except for essential reasons. “The absence of Melbourne visitors will

hurt our tourism industry, so we’d love other regional Victorians to consider enjoying our attractions over the long weekend,” he said. Cr Sullivan reminded visitors of the requirement for regional Victorian businesses to check customer IDs, to verify they are not from metropolitan Melbourne. He urged people to be understanding of the need for this process and also to check in to facilities via the QR code. Cr Sullivan encouraged locals to visit geelongaustralia.com.au/covid19 for information on local restrictions.

Mums call for help after lockdown Pleas for help to a Geelong charity helping disadvantaged families increased by almost a third in April and May amid the halting of JobKeeper and, later, a statewide COVID-19 lockdown. The initial seven-day lockdown beginning in late May halted donations to Geelong Mums and caused multiple shortages, according to the group’s partnerships co-ordinator Kelly Suvoltos. “Staff were still onsite and distributing items to social workers,” she said. “But we had no donations from the public or volunteers allowed onsite. “With things not coming in, we’re certainly

seeing gaps on our shelves and we’ve had to put some items on a waiting list.” The organisation is desperately seeking cots, prams, child car seats, coats and blankets for struggling families. Geelong Mums assist the homeless and unemployed, asylum seekers with no access to government assistance, those fleeing family violence and other families in need. More than 40 per cent of the families that Geelong Mums support have been “directly affected” by COVID-19, according to the organisation. But their annual giving day next Wednesday (June 16) has come at “the perfect time after

lockdown”, according to Ms Suvoltos. Geelong Mums’ partner organisations will quadruple every dollar donated during the giving day. “Because of the community’s generosity on giving day last year, we managed to continue supporting families in need throughout a global pandemic and multiple lockdowns,” Geelong Mums general manager Julia Roache said. “Donations from giving day this year will give us another opportunity to help even more children than ever before.” Details: www.geelongmums.org

An elderly woman is fighting for life in hospital after being hit by a car in Grovedale on Tuesday morning. The pedestrian in her 80s was hit by a white Holden ute on Marshalltown Road near Dendle Street just after 7am. The male driver stopped at the scene, police said. An ambulance helicopter flew the woman to The Alfred in a critical condition with upper and lower body injuries about 8am. A spokesperson from The Alfred yesterday said the woman remained in a critical condition. Meanwhile, police fined a motorcyclist and a driver in two unrelated incidents at Lara last Friday. Geelong Highway Patrol officers clocked a learner motorcyclist allegedly speeding at 152km/h past Lara along the Princes Freeway about 8.50pm They intercepted the 31-year-old Lara man and impounded his motorcycle for 30 days at a cost of $1137. Police expect the motorcyclist to front court on charges including dangerous speeding, exceeding the speed limit by 45km/h or more, failure to display L-plates and failure to wear a high-visibility vest. Earlier that day, a Little River man allegedly blew more than five times the legal blood alcohol limit when officers breath-tested him in Lara. The 27-year-old driver returned a reading of 0.266, police alleged. Police suspended his licence for 12 months and he is expected to appear at a magistrates court at a later date for traffic-related offences. Police also expected to issue the man a penalty notice for breaching COVID-19 restrictions.

Dave’s date with destiny Corio Bay was “like a mirror” when Dave McGuinness took the stunning aerial photo on the front cover of the 2021 Geelong Calendar. “It was dead still as I was driving through Geelong – there wasn’t a breath of wind,” the Clifton Springs videographer said. “It was just one of those mornings, the light was beautiful.” He had been en route to Barwon River for a paddle on July 8, 2020, when he stopped to take the winning shot with his drone. Dave began flying drones several years ago, when the “industry was very much in its infancy”. Now he makes promotional videos of vineyards, golf courses, sporting clubs, national parks and anything else that “lends itself to aerial shots”.

But he has always had a passion for photography and, lately, has tried to do more. One of his photos made the 2018 calendar, and last year his aerial shot of Geelong Carousel appeared on the front cover following more than 3500 public votes. This week he encouraged local photographers to showcase their work, with entries open for the 2022 Geelong Calendar until August 31. “For every great shot or time lapse I’ve done, there have been 10 that are just no good,” he said. “The people that get the best stuff are the ones that go out there every second day.” Details: geelongaustralia.com.au/calendar

Re-Building our Mental Health System The Andrews government has committed to ensuring Victorians have the mental health support that they need and deserve. We have committed to implementing all of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. This is really significant and it is life-changing for so many in our community, not only people who have mental health problems but also the professionals providing that support and the important work that they do to support the workforce. They know that the current system is broken. I want to thank them for all the work that they do in our communities. But I think this is so significant for everyone across the board to know that we are actually stepping up and doing something about this huge problem. All the feedback I have had from my community has been positive. It is not just in my community but everywhere I go, from families in other parts of regional Victoria who are saying Mental Health support is so important to them.

the skilled workforce. We have ramped that up. I had the pleasure of going to Gordon TAFE only last week to meet the students who are doing the mental health course there. It was fantastic to hear their passion and commitment to such an important issue in our community. In Geelong we have the hospital outreach post-suicidal engagement program doing amazing work and based at Barwon Health. We have recently started the acute mental health beds that were committed through the interim report of the royal commission. But even better than that, we have announced in the budget the adult local mental health hub and the new youth prevention and recovery care unit for the region. This is really life-changing commitment. The community mental health hub is about to open at Barwon Health. There are so many things happening in my community to ensure that people are getting the right support, and this is one I am happy to share with the Geelong Community.

The feedback is really significant, not only for those with mental illness but also for their families and carers and the professionals that are providing that support. The Andrews Government have been working to get the skills and training right by providing the free TAFE courses, and doing what we can to ensure that we have

By Luke Voogt A demolition several years in the making to extend and “rejuvenate” a central Geelong laneway could begin as early as next month. Joint state-council authority Revitalising Central Geelong on Tuesday announced Melbourne-based company Akt Project Management would oversee the extension of Dennys Place. While yet to confirm an exact start date, Revitalising Central Geelong said work “will commence early in the new financial year”. “We will make an announcement in the coming weeks,” a spokesperson said. Revitalising Central Geelong expects to complete the project by December, just in time for the 2021-22 summer. Once complete, the project will extend Dennys Place from Malop Street to the hospitality precinct in Little Malop Street. The project aims to attract visitors to Little Malop Street bars, restaurants and shops to bring “new life” to central Geelong. The laneway extension is part of an overall council push to create more walking routes, increase pedestrians and improve safety across central Geelong. “Geelong’s new laneway network will play

a key part in rejuvenating the CBD, and enhancing the vibrancy and appeal of central Geelong for our diverse community,” Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said. “Encouraging more pedestrians into the smaller streets and laneways will drive new business enterprises and support healthy and active transport.” The project involves demolishing the former Guf Geelong internet cafe, which relocated a block east to 2/73 Malop Street last October. State government has invested $2.7 million in new pedestrian connections across Geelong, with another $1.35 million allocated from the $382.5 million state-federal Geelong City Deal. “Dennys Place is exactly the sort of project we had in mind when we signed the Geelong City Deal,” Victorian Regional Development Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said. “It’s about building new connections and attractions, linking key precincts and creating important local jobs.” A pedestrian and cycling movement study conducted by UK-based consultancy Space Syntax found that improving Geelong’s laneway system would contribute “significantly” to the city’s prosperity. The project also includes plans for greenery, seating and public art.

Rangers fight trash The 3231 Rubbish Rangers sprang into action when rubbish accumulated in Aireys Inlet last September. They were at it again last Saturday, collecting a “trailer worth” of rubbish in just over an hour, according to group member Jacqui Lamont. “We were amazed at how much rubbish there was,” she said. Local resident Glenys Drayton set the group up following complaints on social media, and almost every Saturday since the rangers have collected rubbish across the town. “Rubbish ranging” has become “addictive” for the dozen-plus members, according to Jacqui. “If we see rubbish during the week, we still pick it up,” she said. “We’ve become so proud of what we’re doing. Our group has created wonderful friendships and we genuinely look forward to our Saturday mornings.” The rangers regularly pick up plastic bottles, wet wipes and dirty nappies, along with building materials and, oddly, men’s underpants. “We picked up five pairs on Saturday,” Jacqui said. The littering continued over the past

fortnight despite COVID-19 restrictions preventing Melburnians travelling to regional Victoria, Jacqui said. “I don’t think people understand we’re just drowning in rubbish.” But word of the rangers’ efforts is spreading, with new groups popping up in Anglesea and even in Armstrong Creek. “It’s got the potential to reach far and wide,” Jacqui said.

Grieving kids are ‘never alone’ In 13 days James ‘Jim’ Larmour went from being a healthy, loving and “generous” father-of-two to succumbing to a deadly infection in his heart. More than a year later, his family speaks with Luke Voogt about connecting with others grieving lost parents and discovering they “are not alone”.

B

lake Dyer-Larmour remembers his dad Jim as a “kind” and “very forgiving” man who always made time for him and older sister Tahra. The Torquay 11-year-old fondly recalls riding the Ferris wheel at Adventure Park with dad on New Year’s Eve, 2019, and their trip to Sydney for his 10th birthday earlier that month. “It was just me and him,” he said. “We went jet boating and up Sydney Tower. It was really fun being up there with all the good views.” Sadly, Blake is among the one in 20 Australians under 18 who have lost a parent or carer. But more than a year since his dad’s death in January 2020, he is coping OK. “I’ve been better since last year,” he said. This March, he attended an Anglesea camp run by Drysdale-based children’s bereavement charity Wombat’s Wish, where he connected with other local kids who have lost a parent. “I felt more comfortable talking to them than people who don’t know what I’m going through,” he said. “It’s just knowing that … it’s not just us going through it.” The camp helped Blake open up after Jim’s death according to Tahra. “For ages he was very quiet,” Tahra, 16, said. “He dealt with it himself and never really opened up about it. “He did tell me that he felt a lot more comfortable opening up [at the camp]. I hadn’t seen him do that for ages.” Tahra admits she was nervous and “not sure how I feel about this” prior to attending the camp. “But as soon as I started talking, I felt so comfortable – everyone was really welcoming,” she said. “It helped me realise that I wasn’t the only one going through what I was. “There was no judgement. I could just open up to them about what I was feeling.” Like Blake, Tahra remembers Jim as a father who put his children first. “He just cared for everyone else before himself,” she said. “We used to go on bike rides together after school. “Every time he would do the groceries, he would take me to buy chocolates or lollies – because mum wouldn’t let him.” Following the “blur” of Jim’s hospitalisation and death, Tahra was sad, angry and confused, especially after her grandparents (Jim’s parents) died in a car crash in April 2017. “I saw it as, ‘why is this happening to me again?’” she said. “I was in denial for a really long time.” Tahra came to terms with his death during 2020. But the camp helped her “re-validate those things” with activities such as a candlelight

ceremony for loved ones. “I learned that what I was feeling was OK – this has happened and it’s OK that it happened,” Tahra said. “I knew that everyone there could relate to how I was feeling.” Like her children, Jacqui Dyer-Larmour sometimes struggles with the suddenness of her husband’s death. “Sometimes we wake up and wonder if it’s real,” she said. “One moment someone’s fit and healthy and the next, they’re gone.” On January 12, 2020, Jim woke up with flu-like symptoms but his condition deteriorated rapidly. When he began shaking uncontrollably, Jacqui called an ambulance, which rushed him to hospital. “It was actually quite traumatic for [the children],” Jacqui said. “At first the infections unit didn’t know what they were dealing with. “He was in an isolated room – the children had to be in full personal protective equipment (PPE) until they knew what it was. “Putting the kids in gowns and masks …

and them seeing their dad sick – it was pretty full-on.” Once specialists diagnosed Jim’s golden staph (bacterial) infection, the children were allowed to see him without PPE. Jim appeared to be healing, but on the 10th day specialists discovered some of the staph had lodged in his heart valve, after he complained of chest pains, and he underwent emergency surgery. “He never woke from that,” Jacqui said. “It was very up and down; even though he was weak, they were talking about him coming home. “It was 13 days from being completely fine to gone.” The family held a funeral for Jim before COVID-19 hit. “But then we were alone at home to deal with it – when you want your friends and family around you the most,” Jacqui said. “[Blake and Tahra] have been amazingly resilient and made me exceptionally proud.” Last October, Jacqui discovered Wombat’s Wish. The bereavement charity was founded in

2005. “I think there’s a lot of grief support out there for adults, but not children,” said Jacqui, who works in mental health. “[Wombat’s Wish is] so fundamentally important and, unfortunately, I don’t think enough people out there know of them.” That seems likely to change, with Australian netballer Emily Mannix and former Port Adelaide footballer Travis Boak, both of whom grew up in Geelong, recently becoming ambassadors for the charity. “To go to a camp with people who completely get it, without judgement, is quite amazing,” Jacqui said. “I’ve been very fortunate to have made a very close friend out of it. When you’re surrounded by people who just get it – it’s a place of feeling known and understood. “You can actually talk openly about it – it’s not skirted around. The fact is dad’s died and it’s OK to say that. I think kids growing up can feel so alone in their thoughts – to know that they aren’t in this alone is just massive.” Details: wombatswish.org.au

Last ditch bid to save aqueduct By Luke Voogt Campaigners have launched a last ditch attempt to save Breakwater’s 108-year-old aqueduct, with the demolition of four spans of the historic structure set to begin this year. “It shouldn’t happen, because there are other solutions,” Friends of the Barwon River Ovoid Sewer Aqueduct member Jennifer Bantow said. “Here we are destroying yet another extraordinary example of innovative engineering design.” The bid comes after Barwon Water this week confirmed the $6.5 million demolition of four of 14 aqueduct spans would begin later this

year, subject to weather. The water authority expects to finish stabilising the structure next year and complete the demolition by 2023. The demolition is part of a plan to turn 66

hectares of surrounding Barwon Water-owned land into public parkland. Heritage Victoria approved a permit for Barwon Water to demolish the four spans in March 2020. A Barwon Water-commissioned report in 2017 indicated the structure could be stabilised to allow safe access under one land span for walkers and another river span for water-users. The report estimated this plan, labelled option 2a, would cost $2,865,866, just over half the initial 2017 estimate of $5.5 million to demolish the four spans. Fellow campaigner David Le Lievre accused Barwon Water of “heritage vandalism” and ignoring a “cheaper and equally-safe option”

that he said would protect the “iconic” structure. Barwon Water managing director Tracey Slatter said engineering experts found that option 2a would not be feasible to construct, and would not adequately secure safe public access on the river. “In considering the future of the aqueduct, we investigated options for ensuring public safety and improving public access to the Barwon River and surrounding land, while balancing heritage values, Aboriginal cultural values and managing costs for our customers.” More information: friendsofbarwonriver ovoidseweraqueduct.org

TV spotlight on Auskicker Teesdale Auskicker Sienna Campbell dreams of one day playing for her beloved Geelong Cats. “That would be awesome! I’ll have to do lots of practice though,” the seven-year-old mused. And Sienna has a chance to learn from the best, Cats captain Joel Selwood, after appearing on national television during the Melbourne-Brisbane clash last Friday. She spoke to channel 7 presenter Hamish McLachlan in a pre-recorded interview – over Zoom due to COVID-19 restrictions – before watching herself on TV at half-time. “It was funny, because I’ve never seen myself on TV,” she said this week. “I really enjoyed talking to Hamish and I wish it went for longer, as we had so much to talk about.” As a weekly nominee for AFL Auskicker of the Year, Sienna is set to present a medal to a

premiership-winning player on grand final day. If she wins the competition she will have Selwood, one of her four favourite players, as her personal footy mentor for 2022. “He’s always getting hurt because he plays so good,” she said. She also hopes to meet Tom Hawkins “because he kicks lots of goals”, “uncle Dave’s favourite player” Jeremy Cameron and Irishman Zach Tuohy. “He has the same name as my brother and he’s got a funny accent,” she said. If her passion for Auskick is anything to go by, she might end up streaming down the midfield or kicking goals for Geelong one day. “I like to kick goals, and tackling and running with the ball,” she said. “I get to learn new skills at Auskick and … have fun with my friends.” Luke Voogt

MY GEELONG Order of Australia medallist and Portarlington Business Development Association president John Rae speaks to Luke Voogt about the 11-year grassroots campaign to get the Portarlington-Melbourne ferry sailing.

How have you been involved with Portarlington Business Development Association? We had a shop and were invited to join the association. Each monthly meeting would have at most 29 attendees, before I was invited to join the committee as president. The new committee changed just about everything: our meetings became bigger and we now have 178 members. The association is the best and most flexible group of people I have ever been involved with – their effort and talent is amazing. We had 240 people in total attend our last meeting over two nights in May. How did you secure the PortarlingtonMelbourne ferry? More than a decade ago, 200 people attended a Portarlington community meeting organised by Geelong council. We were split into groups

Tell us about you… I grew up in Melbourne and left school at 14, beginning work as an office boy at hardware company McEwan’s on Bourke Street. I spent most of my life working in sales and marketing for American-owned hardware corporations, and loved it. I retired at 58, and my wife Elaine and I purchased a holiday house in Portarlington. We fell in love with the town and moved permanently 20 years ago. We had three boys and five grandsons, and we desperately wanted a granddaughter. Families one and two were not interested in having any more children, but family three recently had two gorgeous girls, so now we’ve got granddaughters too.

and asked to identify what required fixing. Number one on the list was a ferry from Portarlington to Melbourne. The work begun but numbers fell away from as it appeared nothing was occurring. Geoff Henderson and I were the only remaining members after the first 12 months. We knew it would occur – what we didn’t know was it would take 11 years. The support we received from any group we asked was amazing, and Bellarine MP Lisa

Neville was always there with us – she has a great work ethic and looks forward all the time. The magic day was when Paul Little and Murray Rance asked us if we could fill the ferry for two trips; we said yes. During the first trip in 2016, I was one of about 400 people aboard, while another 121 stood on the pier waving us goodbye. We filled the next ferry too. I’ve also been involved in getting a new supermarket, petrol station and primary school

in Portarlington through local groups over the past 20 years. What do you like to do locally? Eastern Beach and Geelong Regional Library are my favourite places in Geelong. Each time I go to either, I say to myself, “I don’t care how much these projects cost, they are brilliant.” On the Bellarine, Jack Rabbit Vineyard is stunning, and I love catching the ferry from Portarlington. Port a great place to live.

Non-finalised pleas at Geelong County Court have remained level on 26 between January 27, 2020 and January 27, 2021, with 80 pleas finalised between those dates. The Productivity Commission’s Report on Government Services (Justice) shows that pending criminal matters in the Magistrates Court of Victoria have increased by 82 per cent from 2014-15 to 2019-20. The Magistrates Court of Victoria did not provide caseload statistics on Geelong Magistrates Court in response to the Independent’s inquiries earlier this week. Following the suspension of in-person circuit sittings, the County Court of Victoria implemented a new process for regional matters. Under the process, all pleas and appeals against sentences are provided with a fixed listing date upon committal or appeal lodgement. “The majority of these matters were conducted virtually using video conferencing software, with appearances in court permitted under limited circumstances,” a court spokesperson said. “This has reduced the delay for these types of matters.”

Solstice series a winter escape By Luke Voogt At age 75, Jack Price is set to play his first major role in his onstage debut as a playwright, Oldie Locks, this month. The Point Lonsdale actor-playwright was a late-comer to the theatre a few years ago after a seemingly odd request. “A friend rang and she said, ‘a friend of mine wants a man’,” the retired flight engineer laughed. “My reaction was, ‘is she rich?’” The friend soon clarified the request was for someone to play the supporting role of ‘Mr Brownless’ – no relation to the famous former Cat – in local play The Zipper. “The only previous acting experience I had was in nativity plays in primary school,” Price said. “But once I got out there, and did it, I felt relaxed. I thought, ‘this is great’.” After trying his hand at acting, Price decided to have a go at writing too.

‘‘

it’s giving me confidence to write more

’’

- Jack Price

On a trip to New South Wales with a friend he met their family member, who was suffering dementia, which inspired his debut play. “He was a very quiet fellow and an astute businessman,” he said. But Price’s principal character, Bob, is completely different, despite suffering the same condition. “The way I’ve written him, he’s the life of the party,” he said. “He’s a teaser and tells silly jokes. “He’s a real family man – he put his family ahead of his job, and he’s just one of those likeable people. “He’s a lot like me – I don’t take life and what’s happening in the world too seriously. I can vote, that’s all I can do.” The comedic tragedy seesaws from funny and absurd to sadder, more serious moments with Bob and his family. Price was thrilled for the play to feature in the Potato Shed’s upcoming Winter Solstice series. “It’s really exciting and it’s giving me confidence to write more. It keeps me occupied, because I’m retired,” he said. “We’ve been doing rehearsals on Zoom [during the latest lockdown] – that’s been

difficult. But we’ve got three nights this week at the Potato Shed, so that will be good.” The series also includes another locally-written play, Introverts Outing, along with mulled wine, live music and a fire pit to escape winter’s chill. Whittington playwright Sindi Renea penned Introverts Outing when she returned to acting several years ago following a divorce, she explained. A teacher in a drama course once told her she “had a really good grasp of dialogue”, which later inspired her to begin writing plays too.

She came up with the idea for her latest play while moderating several social media groups. “No one ever meets on these groups,” Renea said. “I remember trying to organise an event, and only me and another moderator showed up! I wanted to see what would happen if the group actually met.” Tensions flare when one group member’s ‘friends-with-benefits’ relationship with another’s fiancée emerges. But, as Renea explains, the play is about how people sometimes judge others without knowing the full story.

“You don’t know why that person is like that – so it’s about looking a little bit deeper,” she said. “I’m hoping, even though the characters are a little bit far-fetched, that someone in the audience will go, ‘I know someone like that!’” The series is sold out for its opening night next Friday, June 18, with some tickets remaining for another two shows next Saturday, June 19. Theatre 3triple2 secretary Chris Reynolds said extra tickets would become available if regional Victorian COVID-19 restrictions ease further. Details: geelongaustralia.com.au/potatoshed

Former Goanna muso serves up Homemade Jam

Marcia Howard. (Melisa Smith)

Former Goanna singer and The Voice contestant Marcia Howard hopes to serve up a Homemade Jam – of the musical variety – this month at Fyansford. The multi-instrumental musician of more than four decades, now living in Belmont, held her first Homemade Jam for a live audience at The Door Gallery Cafe last month. “It’s just a beautiful venue and [the owner] Graham had the fire going in May, so it was really cosy,” she said. “It was just beautiful to have that connection again and sing with a live audience. “Getting back out there to perform after the lockdowns – it takes a bit of nerve. You think, ‘can I still get back on the horse?’ But I really felt the love in the room.” Howard plans to hold a combined live and live-streamed Homemade Jam at the venue on June 19. “I thought why not film this one, and film the audience singing?” she said. “I want to put mics in the audience so people can sing along, that’s the idea.” The concerts are an extension of Howard’s live-streamed shows from home since COVID-19 hit Australia.

Howard left Australia on March 10, 2020, for Ireland to open for folk singer Mary Black – a major recording artist in her native country – in a five-day tour culminating in a live orchestra show. “Two days in, Ireland went into lockdown and I had to come home,” she said. “It was devastating.” Since COVID-19 Howard has worked as a music teacher for local high schools and Deakin University. She has also been working on a PhD for Deakin on “my experiences as a female in the music industry over 40 years”, which included penning a few new songs. “I’ve also been doing these homemade jams for myself and to keep morale up for people at home,” she said. “I broadcast them on Facebook and YouTube during the lockdowns. I’m jamming, but I’m at home – so it’s a Homemade Jam!” Howard first rose to fame alongside older brother Shane in Goanna, the Geelong-born band most famous for the Australia-wide hit Solid Rock. The singer-songwriter has also released several albums in her decades-long solo

career, and competed in TV singing contest The Voice in 2016. She plans to draw on her time with Goanna and as a solo artist while paying tribute to her favourite artists in the June 19 show. “Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin – it’s all the women I loved listening to growing up,” she said. The show, dependent on restrictions at the time, will feature Howard on guitar and piano, along with local musicians Matiss Schubert and Michael Davis on fiddle and drums. Howard pledged to refund all bookings if forced to cancel the show on June 19, or to allow those happy to attend at a later date to hold onto their tickets. “People are understandably shy about committing money at the moment,” she said. “We’re all in flux at the moment,” she said. “It’s a day-to-day thing – we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. We’re all just trying to survive.” Details: marciahoward.com.au Luke Voogt 11 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 11 June, 2021

GARDENING AUSTRALIA ABC TV, 7.30pm

SUNDAY

JACK IRISH ABC TV, 8.30pm

As one of the best Aussie series of recent times, there’s trepidation as the much-loved crime series returns for its final hurrah tonight after two seasons and three telemovies. Following the titular troubled private investigator (an excellent Guy Pearce, left), Jack’s tragic past will finally be resolved in this four-part series starring a who’s who of Aussie actors. The story picks up three years after we last saw Jack, who is asked by Barry Tregear (Shane Jacobson) to help with an investigation.

SATURDAY

THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS NINE, 8.40pm

Eight movies in and the fury hasn’t died down. The cars are faster, the crashes louder and the storyline thinner. In this latest telling, Dom (Vin Diesel, right) goes rogue after he’s seduced into working with new terror entry Cipher (Charlize Theron). She’s the definition of high-tech terrorism where driverless cars controlled from her computer are used as high-speed weapons. Jason Statham gets a bigger role than he did in #6 and the team (Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson) go up against tanks, submarines and torpedoes while making cars move in ways you never thought possible. Ridiculous, yes. Entertaining, most certainly.

MONDAY

9-1-1: LONE STAR SEVEN, 9pm

Handsome and oozing charisma, a, Rob Lowe leads the cast of this ostentatious and cheesy procedural disaster drama. Arguably one of the most underrated actors of his generation, many will find it difficult to forget his goofball role on cult satire Parks and Recreation, but his turn here ass Owen, a perfectionist Manhattan an firefighter relocated to Texas, iss unique and entertaining – often n accidentally. Season two kicks us off tonight, with the coronavirus pandemic embedded into the narrative. But a global health crisis still has nothing on the series’ over-the-top emergencies. Sadly, female lead Liv Tyler doesn’t return, but excitement awaits with a 9-1-1 crossover in two weeks.

There are myriad ways to ring in the weekend, but unless you are tuning into Gardening Australia with a vino in hand, you are probably doing it the wrong way. Is there anything more life affirming and relaxing than learning about nature with a group of can-do folk from the comfort of yyour couch – or bed? Not really. y Anchored by passionate host Costa Georgiadis, Georgiad this long-running series is a lesson in finding joy and p purpose with nature, and it’s all To very laidback. Put an end to foot pain A recent study found that a staggering 89 per cent of Australians suffer from foot pain at some point in their lives. However 63 per cent admit to never having sought medical advice for their concerns. This leads to the question of why, says Dr David Kavanagh from Foot & Leg Pain Clinics in Geelong. “Is it because people don’t know where to go for help with foot pain?” Do they think nothing can be done to assist their pain? Or do they think it will just right itself over time? “Regardless of the why, these statistics clearly mean that the majority of people are struggling with unnecessary, totally treatable foot pain.” As the experts at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics know, the feet are extremely complex structures. They consist of 25 per cent of all the bones in the body, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. Despite that complexity, Dr Kavanagh says that most foot and lower limb conditions can be assisted relatively easily without the need for medications or surgery.

So, who do people turn to when suffering foot or leg pain? Dr Kavanagh suggests that a GP, orthotist or general podiatrist is often not the best professional to diagnose and treat foot and leg pain, due to their more generalised knowledge in the area of lower limb musculoskeletal medicine. “An experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist, with in-depth training in biomechanics, musculoskeletal and regenerative medicine, is the best go-to for help with foot and lower-limb pain, injury or arthritis, as well as children’s growth and development concerns,” he says. ‘This includes the ankle, knee, leg and hip, which can all have a big impact on the foot and vice versa.” That large chunk of people not accessing treatment for any lower limb pain are encouraged to call the clinic and let the experts demonstrate the relief they can bring. Cats alter AFLW side for 2022 Richelle ‘Rocky’ Cranston, Bec Goring, Kate Darby and Olivia Purcell will depart Geelong’s AFLW side, with two new players joining for next season. Cranston joined Geelong from Melbourne and kicked 11 goals in 21 AFLW matches for the Cats. The 31-year-old also won Geelong’s VFLW best and fairest medal in 2018. Goring departs after five years with Geelong including three seasons of AFLW from 2019 to 2021. The key defender captained Geelong’s first VFLW team in 2017, and made the league’s Team of the Year and the grand final in 2018.

She balanced 17 AFLW games for the Cats over three seasons with pursuing a professional music career. Darby played two games with Carlton in 2017 before joining the Cats. She played 10 AFLW games for Geelong, kicking six goals but did not play last season after welcoming her firstborn Ella. Geelong head of AFLW Brett Johnson thanked the trio for their contribution to the club. “It’s always difficult to see players finish with the club, but it’s even harder given all that Rocky, Bec and Kate have done since the start of our women’s program,” he said.

Earlier this week the Cats secured young forward Chloe Scheer and winger Chantel Emonson along with draft selection 15 in a three-way trade with Adelaide and Melbourne. The Cats describe 21-year-old Scheer as an explosive forward with a strong overhead marking ability. A premiership player with Adelaide in 2019, Scheer averaged 11.3 disposals a game in 2021. Emonson, 28, arrives at the Cats after three seasons with the Demons. A rookie draft selection in late 2018, she switched to football after playing state level cricket as a junior.

Midfielder Olivia Purcell will depart Geelong for Melbourne after 19 games in blue and white as a result of the trade. Purcell enjoyed a strong debut season in 2019 and excelled in 2020, claiming Geelong’s best and fairest award. An ACL injury in round 5 this year saw the 20-year-old undergo surgery and begin rehabilitation. Johnson welcomed Scheer and Emonson while thanking Purcell. “Olivia’s enthusiasm and competitiveness was unwavering and we wish her all the best in her future AFLW career,” he said.

Guthrie back next Friday Cats reigning best and fairest Cam Guthrie will return for next Friday’s clash with the Western Bulldogs, according to Geelong coach Chris Scott. “He will play next week,” Scott told a press conference on Wednesday. The 2021 Carji Greeves medallist suffered a shoulder injury in the Cats’ win over Collingwood in round 11. He was not among several returning players, including star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield, selected for last night’s game against Port Adelaide after the Independent went to press. “He won’t make the trip,” Scott said. “He is such an important player for us with 11 games to go in the home and away season, and with some of the guys coming back as well, we just didn’t think it was prudent to push him this week.”

Young forward Gryan Miers is also set to return against the Bulldogs after suffering a hairline fibula (lower leg) fracture in round 7. Silky midfielder Sam Simpson will likely take a few weeks longer following a minor quad strain. “We’re just going to take our time with him,” Scott said. “He did his quad during in his rehab from another injury. “He just has a history now of these little soft tissue injuries – in isolation they don’t amount to much but when you put them together – we just need to be a bit more careful with him.” Scott indicated the Cats wanted Simpson ready to play later in the season. “We want to put a plan together where that’s on the table later for him,” he said.

Cam Guthrie, pictured at training earlier this year, is set to return against the Bulldogs next Friday. (Louisa Jones) 232139_89

SPORT Juniors back, ladies wait on restrictions LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers Junior tennis resumed across Geelong last Saturday with the recent easing of COVID-19 restrictions allowing youngsters to take to the court. Second-placed Surfcoast Torquay Blue hosted top team Highton in the Section 4 boys and, with only two points between the teams going into Saturday, the match-up seemed likely to produce a close contest. Highton came out strong taking the match five sets to one, including four 6-3, while Freddie Arblaster and Liam Muir won their doubles set 6-0. Lachlan Shaw won Surfcoast’s sole set 6-0. COVID-19 restrictions forced Tennis Geelong to cancel the preliminary finals of the Midweek Ladies competition this Tuesday. Semi-final-winning third and fourth-placed teams will now miss out on a chance to make the grand final due to the cancellation. Instead, the ladder-leader and runner-up of each section will face off in grand finals next Tuesday, if restrictions allow senior sport in regional Victoria. The matches will be replays of each section’s first semi-final between first and second on the ladder. Section 1: The Geelong Lawn Green ladies will need to be on their game after their first semi scare where Surfcoast Torquay Black pushed them to an extra set. Section 2: Original favourites Point Lonsdale

will hope for a big turnaround after their shock 1-5 loss to Geelong Lawn Pink in the first semi. Section 3: Minor premiers Highton will want to regain their form leading into the finals, and hope that the 0-6 loss to Drysdale in the first semi was an aberration. Section 4: This will be the hardest to pick, with just one game separating the Barwon Heads and Surfcoast Yellow in the first semi. Both sides had one win each in their previous two clashes. Section 5: Point Lonsdale won the semi-final 4-2 against Surfcoast Torquay, after thrashing Surfcoast 6-0 in the sides’ only other encounter. Surfcoast will need some inspired match-ups to reverse the losing trend. Section 6: Highton seems to have the edge over Anglesea. Highton will want Jacqui

Duxson to continue her good form against Anglesea, after she won five of her six sets in their past two meetings. Section 7: St Stephens would be confident against minor premier Barwon Heads White. St Stephens prevailed against White during the home and away season and in the semi-final, albeit against a depleted side during the latter match. Section 8: Western Heights Uniting and St Mary’s will fight it out in what should be a nail-biting affair. Previous results show barely anything separating the two teams, with a one-game win to St Mary’s in round 5 and a two-game win to Uniting in the first semi. Section 9: Geelong West has the edge over minor premiers St Mary’s with 4-2 wins in both their encounters this season.

With the ease of restrictions, all regional anglers have been able to get back to their favourite spots in hope to get a bent rod. Locally, the fishing has been good with plenty of variety about to keep anglers entertained, with pinkie snapper the top target fish. North Shore has been by far the most popular location with plenty of fish to about 3kg hitting the deck. Casting soft plastics in and around the structure has been by far the most popular method, with Gulp turtleback worms being the best lure. In towards the Geelong Yacht Club there is still plenty of good fishing on offer with anglers picking up pinkies, salmon, flathead and trevally - all on bait and lures. Over the next few weeks we can expect the snotty trevalla to come onto the chew and also see the snook fire up some more. After a few weeks of strong winds it has really fired up the fishing along the Bellarine peninsula and has sent the whiting into a feeding frenzy. St Leonards through to Queenscliff has been on fire with some thumping fish being caught and bag limit captures being very achievable. Fishing into the night has been very effective but fishing your tides during the day should still see you encounter plenty of fish. Silver trevally continue to bite well in the Barwon Estuary towards Ocean Grove, with plenty of quality fish being landed. Fish to more than 50cm are still in the area, as are tonnes of fish between 30- 40cm. Casting grub-style soft plastics has been working best. Bait fishos are still landing their fair share too with pipi and pilchards being the number one bait of choice. Down the west coast, the bluefin tuna bite continues to provide the keen angler with the goods. Apollo Bay has been fishing very well for barrels, with boats finding fish to more than 100kg holding out towards big reef and the rig out there. It is a long way so make sure you do your research and get your fuel right. There is plenty of fish out there with heaps of school fish too.

Kola and Atkins re-sign Geelong defender Jake Kolodjashnij has signed up for another three years in blue and white, with fellow backman Tom Atkins inking a two-year contract extension. Kolodjashnij had qualified as a restricted free agent this season before agreeing to the three-year deal. He missed three games this season with a knee injury, but has since played a crucial role in the backline with Mark Blicavs pushing up on the wing and in the ruck. Kolodjashnij has played 118 games since debuting in mid-2015 and is a key part of the Cats’ defence. 22 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 11 June, 2021

But the 193cm Tasmanian has still yet to kick his first goal, meaning he holds the longest active streak in the AFL for goalless games. The Cats have used the versatile defender to take on dangerous tall and small forwards, along with goal-kicking midfielders when they drift up forward. “Jake can play on all types of opponents, and that gives us flexibility in terms of our match-ups down back,” Geelong football general manager Simon Lloyd said. “He is a quality player and we are pleased to have secured both players.” Lloyd included fellow re-signed defender

Atkins in his praise. “Both Tom and Jake are important, versatile members of our team and epitomise a team-first approach in everything they do,” he said. “Tom has shown he is strong in the contest, can play a variety of roles, having started as a forward who could go into the midfield, and this year transitioning into a defensive role.” Atkins signed a new two-year contract after 46 games with the Cats, including all 11 this season. The Cats drafted the former Geelong Falcon and St Joseph’s junior after he starred in Geelong’s VFL program.
