Creche blow Locked in!

Over 300 people have signed a petition to keep a vital creche service up and running in Pakenham. The Cardinia Life Creche will be shut down next month, leaving parents stranded without affordable childcare. Kylie Hutchinson started the change.org petition, which has gained 306 signatures in less than a week, begging Cardinia Shire Council to change the decision. She relies on the service for her two children Tommy and Hazel. “The creche service offers three hours of affordable care for parents, both members of the gym as well as non-members, knowing their child is in the best of hands,” Kylie said. The last 18 months have been a turbulent time to say the least, and for one engaged Beaconsfield couple, a bit of a rollercoaster ride! When Renee Bertolus and her husband-to-be, Dean Mather heard the news that another snap lockdown was on the cards for Victoria, their hearts sank. Having rescheduled their wedding twice already due to the Covid pandemic, they decided that they weren’t going to let it happen again and decided to pull out all the stops to ensure they were finally able to get married, a day ahead of when they had planned, and the results were priceless. Covid hits home “It was the worst phone call I ever had.” So said owner Lyn McLatchie after The Great Australian Bakehouse in Pakenham was listed as a tier two Covid-19 exposure site over the weekend, after someone visited the store between 11.20am and 11.40am Thursday 15 July. The bakery, located at 137-145 Main St, immediately shut when they heard the news on

Sunday 18 July. Lyn and five of her staff all got tested and isolated while they awaited their results. “I panicked of course, but the man said don’t panic you’ve done nothing wrong, just go get tested.“ Lyn said she was extremely stressed when she found out and didn’t know what to do.

“At the start, I felt so alone. I felt so responsible for my staff,“ she said. The news of another lockdown came as a crushing blow to many businesses along Pakenham’s Main Street, as many were forced to shut up shop once again on Friday 16 July. With only essential services being allowed to remain open, many business owners were left in the lurch and when we stopped to check

in and see how they were coping, many shared their feelings of disappointment and dismay at the news of another lockdown. “It’s incredibly difficult,” Helen Davison, the owner of Nourish Natural Health Food Store said. Then came the news on Tuesday that the lockdown would extend into next week. STORIES PAGES 5-7
