Changing places Geelong siblings Arje and Charlie put on a brave face as the latest lockdown proved one too many for beloved Grovedale institution The Dress Up Place. “We are going to have to shut our shopfront,” said founding member Julie Hall, who has been with the organisation for 13 years. “It costs $3000 a month just to stay open. We had to use up our reserves to keep going as long as we have.” But locals can still help with The Dress Up Place planning a garage sale on August 7, dependent on restrictions, before going into “hibernation”. “We’ve been through our 26,000 costumes and pulled out excess stock,” Julie said. The not-for-profit hopes to sell space-consuming costumes with big heads, such as Sponge Bob Square Pants and Mickey and Minnie, before packing the remainder into council-donated storage. “We will continue to honour our commitment to schools and amateur theatres, it will just be done a different way,” Julie said. Businesses plea for help By Luke Voogt The plight of thousands of local businesses struggling through yet another lockdown has prompted Geelong Chamber of Commerce to call for more government assistance and greater clarity on COVID-19 restrictions. “I know a lot of businesses are choosing to stay shut rather than reopen [when lockdowns end] because of the impact of subsequent restrictions,” said Ben Flynn, chief executive of the chamber. “Businesses need a clearer road map through

lockdowns that limit the tail of restrictions that seem to go on and on afterwards.” The looming threat of further lockdowns before the Pfizer vaccine becomes available for the general population was almost as damaging as “lockdown 5.0” itself, Mr Flynn said. “This lockdown and the recent lockdown 4.0 are likely just two in a number of lockdowns that are going to impact local businesses. “Many people were just returning to the CBD with masks off for a few days and then, bang, it was lockdown again. The impacted industries tend to be the same ones every time.”

Mr Flynn welcomed state and federal governments last week announcing a range of payments for individuals and businesses impacted by the lockdown. “But when [businesses] are looking at cancelling bookings for a number of weeks … the cash amounts really don’t go far enough.” Meanwhile, a man in his 50s infected with COVID-19 remained in a critical but stable condition in intensive care at University Hospital Geelong yesterday, Barwon Health confirmed, as the Independent went to press. The man was one of four positive cases in a

Barwon Heads household, and attended the Geelong versus Carlton match at the MCG on July 10 with a friend who also tested positive. That friend lives at the Maribyrnong apartment complex visited by the New South Wales removalists, from which the current Victorian outbreak originated. COVID-19 testing in Geelong peaked in response to the local cases with more than 15,000 tests since Thursday last week. About 140 local households remain in isolation with day 13 testing set to take place at the end of this week.

Vaccine roll-out to ramp up By Luke Voogt Health authorities are preparing to ramp up COVID-19 vaccinations in Geelong, with federal government expecting a million Pfizer doses arriving each week until late August. “At this stage, Barwon Health is waiting on confirmation of vaccine supply, and more bookings will become available once this is confirmed,” Barwon South West Public Health Unit director Professor Eugene Athan said. “Our daily capacity [at the Norlane vaccination hub] continues to be 2400 people;

however, this is based on supply.” Almost one million doses arrived in Australia earlier this week, including more than 800,000 in Sydney and almost 100,000 each in Melbourne and Perth. The public health unit has so far delivered more than 130,000 doses across the Barwon South West region, including both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines. “Local GPs have also provided AstraZeneca and Pfizer doses through their general practices,” Professor Athan said. “We are very pleased with how our community has

responded to the vaccination roll-out.” Professor Athan urged locals over the age of 60 who are yet to get vaccinated to do so, with supplies of the AstraZeneca vaccine available. “There has been a strong demand for vaccinations with an increase in walk-ins and bookings for people over the age of 60 for AstraZeneca vaccinations,” he said. “Our Pfizer vaccination sessions are being targeted to high-risk workers of any age such as healthcare workers, including aged care and disability workers.” The Australian Technical Advisory Group

Act meow for cat desexing month Five-month-old kitten Ziva is the purr-fect example of why desexing pet cats is important. Ziva arrived at Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) as a stray after surviving the cold and dangers of the streets following her birth. Amid Geelong council’s Desex July initiative, GAWS head vet Julia Aspinall urged Geelong locals to take advantage of discounted surgery at almost a dozen local clinics, including GAWS, this month. “Unwanted kittens will add to the already enormous problem of cats in shelters and living as strays,” Dr Aspinall said. “Female cats on heat can attract a surprising number of interested male cats. “This can lead to cat fights, unwanted pregnancy, disturbed nights for owners and, often, irate neighbours. “Cats fights can result in injuries and the transmission of FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) an incurable autoimmune disorder.” Dr Aspinall stressed the medical benefits of desexing cats, such as lowering the risk of uterine infections and mammary tumours for females. She said castration could lessen the urge for male cats to fight and spray strong-smelling urine to mark their territory. “Medical benefits of neutering your male cat include reducing the risk of prostatic diseases and eliminating the risk of testicular cancers. “Desexed cats tend to not roam as much or as far, so your loved one is likely to stay home and safe.” GAWS remains open during the latest COVID-19 lockdown, with clients requested to book in advance. “We are limiting contact wherever possible,” Dr Aspinall said. As for Ziva, the lucky survivor is now looking for a new fur-ever home. Details: gaws.org.au For a list of veterinary clinics offering discount desexing visit: geelongaustralia.com. au/cats.

on Immunisation (ATAGI) states that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh the risks for people aged 60 and older. The vaccine is available for people under 60 following an assessment of suitability by a qualified health professional. But the ATAGI still recommends Pfizer as the preferred vaccine for people under 60. Walk-in vaccinations are available to anyone over the age of 60 at Barwon Health’s vaccination hub at the old Ford Factory in Norlane. Green Spine progresses Geelong’s controversial Green Spine is set to expand with state authorities awarding contracts for the design of the final stage. WSP in Australia and GHD Group this month began planning the final stage, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) confirmed yesterday. The final stage involves extending greenery and bike lanes along Malop Street to Geelong Botanic Gardens. Work is currently under way on the Green Spine on the north side of Malop Street between Gheringhap and Moorabool streets, including the creation of a triangle park in front of the WorkSafe and NDIS buildings. Drainage, irrigation and kerb works on the triangular park are complete, while paving and turf installation is under way. Remaining works in this section, including further landscaping, paving, drainage and installation of furniture, are due for completion in December. Work on the south side of this section will commence following the finalisation of future bus routes in central Geelong, with the design needing to accommodate buses turning into and out of Malop Street, according to DELWP. DELWP has yet to provide dates for this. State government seized control of the project in March 2020, after council decided by one vote to spend $2 million to demolish separated bike lanes on Malop Street and reintroduce turning lanes. At that point $8 million had been spent on the Green Spine. Luke Voogt

Geelong Cats chief executive Brian Cook has thrown his support behind a local bereavement charity’s nomination for a statewide award. For about a decade Mr Cook has been an ambassador of Wombat’s Wish, which supports children who have lost a parent or parents. “I was one of those, at the age of nine,” he said. “I actually lost my mother in front of me. It was an event I’ll never forget, ever, even though it was 50-odd years ago. “It still comes back in moments when I’m least expecting it. When you love someone so much, and they disappear in a flash, you just never forget it.” Mr Cook and his older brother went to live with their father, who had separated with their mother prior to her taking her own life, along

with their grandparents in Scotland for four years. The Red Cross provided some financial support, but counselling and services like Wombat’s Wish were not available in the 1960s, Mr Cook explained. “My father tried his best to look after us but he wasn’t a qualified psychologist or counsellor. “At age nine you’re too young to know what to do – all you feel is pain in your heart and soul – you don’t know the next step,” he said. Mr Cook supported the nomination on Tuesday for the Victorian Community Achievement Awards to promote Wombat’s Wish’s work for children who suffered the loss he did. West Barwon Reservoir is overflowing for the first time since August 2014, according to Barwon Water, flooding nearby land and forcing the closure of Birregurra-Forrest Road. Rainfall in January added about 3.6 billion litres of water to the Otways reservoir, while above average rainfall in May and June caused the highest and second-highest increases in storage respectively for those months in a decade, Barwon Water said. Polwarth MP Richard Riordan said a silt build-up had changed the course of the river, with the overflow now “flooding farmers’ paddocks and wasting important environmental flows”. He demanded VicRoads install a new culvert on Birregurra-Forrest Road so it could reopen.

Waste diversion Surf Coast residential waste going to landfill has dropped lower than in 2005 despite significant population growth since, according to Surf Coast council. About 39 per cent of waste, 1774 tonnes, went to landfill, while new purple-lidded residential bins helped collect 694 tonnes of glass for recycling. From February to June, the shire’s new food and garden organics service collected 3121 tonnes for composting, with overall green waste collection increasing by 37 per cent.

Road upgrades for ‘black spots’ By Luke Voogt “Black spot” intersections in Norlane and Manifold Heights will each receive million-dollar upgrades in a bid to prevent crashes, federal government announced on Wednesday. The Princes Highway and North Shore Road intersection at Norlane will receive $1.1 million to improve slip lanes, turning lanes and pedestrian access. Another $1.03 million will go towards improving the roundabout, lighting and

line-marking at the intersection of Autumn Street and Minerva Road at Manifold Heights. A further $185,000 will fund splitter islands and new lighting at the Wilsons Road and Westmorland Street intersection at St Albans Park, a total of $2.3 million for the Corio electorate. In the neighbouring seat of Corangamite, $1.67 million will go toward installing a guard fence and widening road shoulders and pavement on Cape Otway Road between Considines Road and Hendy Main Road at Moriac. Another $638,000 will fund wombat

crossings – elevated zebra crossings – improved signage and line-marking on all approaches to the Barwarre Road and Marshalltown Road intersection at Marshall. West of Geelong, $301,000 will fund a new safety barrier with a motorcycle rub rail and solar-powered vehicle-activated flashing warning signs near the bridge at Meredith-Steiglitz Road and Pioneer Ridge Road, Meredith. This equals a total of $2.61 million in funding for the seat of Corangamite. The six projects received funding in federal government’s 2021-22 Black Spot Program,

aimed at reducing crash risk and improving safety. “Road crashes place major emotional and economic strains on all affected communities but particularly the families and friends of the victims,” senator Sarah Henderson said. Deputy prime minister and Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Minister Barnaby Joyce said the Black Spot Program targeted road locations with a history or risk of crashes. Name change embraced Wangala Primary School pupils celebrated their new name with their own makeshift tribute recently, in the absence of an official sign. “I’ve actually got a meeting with the sign-writer in an hour,” school principal Steven King said last week, following the newly-announced name change. The school, previously known Oberon South Primary, was one of nine across Victoria recently named after local Indigenous words. “It means ‘to make good’,” said Mr King, who described the name as apt given the school’s move to a new location this January on its 50th anniversary. The school moved to the former Oberon High School oval after that school relocated to Armstrong Creek. “Our old facility was a bit run down,” Mr King said. “This new location is significantly better.”

The school’s enrolment had since grown from 31 to 42, Mr King said. “These are state-of-the-art facilities for modern-day teaching with plenty of room to move. We’re in the process of landscaping and we’ve got new playgrounds coming too.” State authorities chose the new names for the nine schools in collaboration with their communities and Geographic Names Victoria. Parents, teachers and pupils helped chose the name Wangala Primary School from three options, Mr King explained. “They love it, and I think it’s a positive name,” he said. Wadawurrung man Norm Stanley was at the school last week to help celebrate the new name. “He’s going to work on a piece of art that tells the school’s story and we’ll actually work that into our uniform,” Mr King said. Tell us about you… I’m 59 and I’ve lived in Leopold for 22 years with my wife Jayne. We just liked the idea of our kids growing up here. We have two adult kids. Our daughter has moved out but our son is here at the moment with his girlfriend. One thing we really like about Leopold is we’re 15 minutes from both the centre of Geelong and the beach. I grew up in Melton and Eltham, opposite sides of Melbourne. My dad was originally from Geelong and a shire secretary – so we moved around a lot.

We want to bring great exhibitions to Geelong to inspire local photographers.

How did your career in photography lead to you opening Focal Point Darkroom and Gallery? I started out at the Herald and Weekly Times in the darkroom, where I worked for six years. I then spent 25 years as a freelance photographer for motorsports and classic car magazines. The bottom fell out of the car magazine market in 2017, so I spent 12 months working out what I wanted to do. After another 12 months preparing, researching and just making sure I was heading in the right direction, we opened Focal Point in 2019. Out of all the work I had done, being in the darkroom was the most enjoyable, so I wanted to give people the opportunity of doing that. It evolved into a photographic hub for local photographers to produce and exhibit their work, and celebrate photography. We’ve got a darkroom, a studio that people can hire, a gallery and a library with more than 700 books on photography.

How are you coping with COVID-19? We’re just holding on. It’s just so frustrating – every time you think you’re getting ahead and things are starting to go well again, you get another lockdown.

What’s next for the gallery? We were meant to have an exhibition of our members’ work starting last week, which will begin once restrictions allow. From September 2 to October 31 we’ve got still photography from Australian movies from 1900 to the 1980s. We will then have our music photography exhibition, See The Music, from November 26 through to January 30.

What do you love about photography? Photography can capture moments in time and freeze history for future generations to see. A great photograph is more memorable than almost any video. What are your favourite things to do locally? There are so many places to make great photos, whether it’s Eastern Beach, or some of the grungier places and factories. It doesn’t have to be pretty to be good photography.

What’s something about you that people might not know? I’ve got a Mini Moke that I’ve owned for 39 years and Mini Van that I’ve owned for 25 years. I’m part of the Victorian Mini Club. I’ve driven Minis and Mokes all over Australia from Cape York to Perth and everywhere in between. And in Tassie! I’ve done 13 charity bush rallies: more than half in Minis and Mokes. Lifeline for Bellarine music icons By Luke Voogt

Hugo T Armstrong. (Supplied)

A new $65,683 lifeline for two Bellarine music institutions could prove vital for local emerging artists, according to Blues Train founder Hugo T Armstrong. Mr Armstrong recently secured $38,183 in federal funding to help the Blues Train put on a series of shows for the next generation of blues and roots musicians in January. “You’ve got to have the next generation coming through all the time,” he said. “Having young blues musicians is nothing new for us but it’s rite of passage for them.” COVID-19 devastated the Blues Train, which has previously featured big names including

The Teskey Brothers and the John Butler Trio in its carriages. “The Blues Train was one of the first music venues to close during the pandemic in March, 2020, and will be one of the last to return due to its unique nature,” Mr Armstrong said. “We’ve had to pivot our business to develop grant-writing skills and apply for support to hibernate and then revive this unique music venue. We were unsuccessful in a lot of grants for very similar things.” Mr Armstrong said the funding would be critical in the Blues Train’s quest to “develop new artists and audiences”. He said he planned in October to announce the line-up for the Next Generation concert series.

Diabetes charity expands into Queensland The Gold Coast had just exited lockdown when Ange Liston-Mccaughley and her family flew up to expand Geelong-based charity Type 1 Foundation. A fortnight later, after 300 people attended the launch of the foundation’s new Queensland branch, the Belmont family is set to return home with Victoria in yet another lockdown. “We managed to avoid all of it,” Ange said. “The reason we started [Type 1 Foundation] was because we had such a terrible experience on holiday here – so it feels like we’ve finally had some luck.” Ange established the foundation after her daughter Lila was diagnosed with diabetes during a family holiday on the Gold Coast in 2013. Lila came close to going into a coma after an ambulance rushed her to hospital during that fateful holiday. Eight years on, Lila helped her mum during last Sunday’s launch at Sea World along with a mother’s night on the Sunshine Coast. “She’s become a really big part of the foundation, which I’m really proud of,” Ange said. The foundation now has ambassadors on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, and has sold about 3400 beanies in its yearly fundraiser in pursuit of a target of 4000. “We made lots of new friendships,” Ange said. “[These] connections are so important when living with this disease.” The family also made some “special” memories at Sea World to make up for their previous Gold Coast holiday, Ange said. Queenscliff Music Festival received $27,500 for a series of monthly concerts later this year. “We’re very excited to work on this new project which will breathe life into the beautiful and historic Queenscliff Town Hall,” festival director Andrew Orvis said. The funding would go toward a PA system, lighting and other equipment to transform the hall into a “fantastic community arts space” for live music, theatre and more, Mr Orvis said. Federal senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson announced the grants on Wednesday as part of round two of federal government’s Live Music Australia Program. Kerryn shares her inner strength Kerryn Siems overcame fear, a negative body image and an abusive relationship on her way to becoming a strong woman. She speaks to Luke Voogt about the sport that helped her find her strength, both outside and in.

B

elmont strong woman Kerryn Siems admits she “hated” group sessions when she first joined a gym almost a decade ago. “There was nothing about the training I didn’t like, it was more that it was hard because I was really unfit,” the 33-year-old told the Independent. “I felt like a baby elephant trying to do a circuit. Now I run group sessions myself.” Kerryn initially joined to “get a bikini body” – a quest that would later turn into something so much more. “I was very out of shape and I wanted to lose weight,” she said. “Most people would have looked at me and thought, ‘she’s not that out of shape.’ But I didn’t feel very healthy within my own body. “I kind of abused my body in my 20s eating rubbish, drinking and not really looking after myself.” She had just migrated from the UK to Australia after escaping an abusive and sometimes violent relationship. “He was a drug dealer and 10 years older than me,” she said. “I was also doing a lot of drugs at the time. I knew that it wasn’t good for me and that my mental health was suffering. “I knew I wanted out, but every time I tried to get out, he pulled me back in. “I had a friend who lived in Geelong and she told me to come down for six months and have a look around. So I did – I kind of put myself into my own rehab.

it took a lot of focus off trying to look a certain way - Kerryn Siems

“And I’ve never looked back.” But Kerryn’s body dysmorphia stemmed back long before she first joined a Geelong gym in 2012. “I had battled with my body image ever since I was a young girl,” she said. Growing up in Pinetown, South Africa, Kerryn was an athletic girl who ran cross country, swam for her school team and did majorettes, similar to calisthenics. But that changed at age 12 when her family migrated to the UK, just as she starting going through puberty. “As you become a woman, your body starts to change – you suddenly start to hold weight in different places,” she said. “For me it all felt very foreign and I almost felt ashamed. “Then you see all the media with models who pretend to have zero body fat. You think there is something wrong with you for not looking like that.” Those body image issues continued as an adult, eventually prompting Kerryn to join the gym after she moved to Australia “for a new start” and warmer weather in 2011. Initially, she struggled to find motivation. “I would come up with every excuse under the sun not to train,” she said. So she hired a personal trainer to keep her on track, and became more focused on weight-based training. As she built her strength, she began to appreciate her body more for “what it was able to do, rather than how it looked”. In 2015, Tyson Morrisey, crowned the world’s third-strongest man under 105 kilograms in 2018, noticed her training at South Geelong gym Strong Geelong. “It sounds cliché but he said, ‘you’re pretty strong for a girl. I don’t know if you realise how strong you are, you should compete’,” she said. “He didn’t sugar-coat anything.” With good programming and Tyson coaching her, she competed in her first strong woman competition in the Australian Log and

Deadlift Championships, just a few months later in 2016. “You have to learn from someone who has experience and he taught me everything I know,” she said. Kerryn admits being “terrified”, not of the brutal physical tasks before her, but of “failing in front of a crowd”. But that changed from the moment she took up the first weight. “I remember strangers cheering for me and it just took all that fear away,” she said. The sport soon became a huge part Kerryn’s life and she began getting up at 5.30am five times a week to train before work as a homebuilding consultant. “I loved it because it took a lot of focus off trying to look a certain way,” she said. “Suddenly, that didn’t matter anymore. I cared more about what I was physically able to do.” The tournaments include several standard events such as lifting stones up to 100kg, pressing a log, a farmer’s carry with 100kg in each hand and carrying a yoke – as in the farming implement traditionally pulled by oxen. In 2017 Kerryn set the Australian record in the latter for women under 72.5kg, walking 15 metres with a yoke weighing a massive 250kg – almost quadruple her bodyweight at the time. Each tournament includes an ever-changing mix of other events including axle deadlifts and ‘Conan’s wheel carry’. Being a strong woman also opened doors in the fitness industry, with Kerryn launching her own all-female gym KSS Personal Training, in February 2020, just before COVID-19 hit. “I had my opening party on March 9 and I had to close two weeks later,” she said. But her Geelong clientele, ranging from 15 to 54-years-old, had been fantastic during the pandemic, she said. “I’ve been very fortunate; I have managed to keep my head above water. When we’re allowed to open and train outside, all of my clients come back.” Some were training to become strong women too, while others just wanted to get fit or have a coach to keep them accountable, Kerryn said.

“One client, her whole family comes in and trains. I just love what I do.” But pushing herself to the absolute limit in strong woman competitions has risks she would never expose her regular clients to. After completing an event at a tournament, she took off her weightlifting belt and one of her left ribs “popped out” of place. She competed in the remaining three events anyway. Another time, she used too much ‘tacky’ adhesive to lift a stone, which caused her to hit

her face on it when she dropped it. “I had to have root canals on two teeth,” she said. “When you get to a certain level of strong woman, things are going to happen,” she said. “You go in knowing the risks.” Kerryn will feature alongside other strong and courageous women in a new Australian documentary series available on ABC iview from August 1. The series, Strong Women, features daughters, mothers and wives sharing how the sport helped them rebuild themselves inside and out after facing domestic violence, bullying, addictions and eating disorders. The series is the work of documentary filmmaker Alexandra Gaulupeau, and freelance producer Corinne Innes, who was amazed when she first watched these women in action. “She was blown away. She was like, ‘This is unreal – I’ve never seen anything like this’,” Kerryn said. “But she could only find documentaries on strong man competitions, as most people were just interested in covering the men. The women were a bit under the radar.” While for centuries strong women have performed in circus acts, strong women competitions only started to “amp up” about a decade ago, according to Kerryn. But since 2015 the number of women competing has increased by 500 per cent in Australia. “In my first competition there were three women in my weight category,” she said. “When I competed last time, there were 20. I want so much for other women to get involved and have that exhilarating experience.” The documentary series also promotes the Strong Body Strong Mind campaign, aimed at empowering women to see their body for what it can achieve rather than how it looks or as a “number on the scale”. Kerryn hopes the documentary can inspire young women struggling with similar body image issues to those she overcame. “It would have been so awesome to have had role models like there are today, who are … more about what your body can do than needing to look a certain way,” she said. Developer’s view from the top By Luke Voogt A high-rise headquarters has officially opened in central Geelong, with developer Quintessential Equity declaring the city’s newest office building complete. Quintessential and Kane Constructions partnered to build the $100 million, nine-level headquarters for health insurer GMHBA, with the developer announcing $1.3 billion of projects in total for Geelong. The headquarters is among $800 million in Quintessential Equity projects complete or currently under way, with more than $500 million more in the pipeline over the next four

to five years, the company confirmed yesterday. According to Quintessential, the construction of the headquarters injected more than $50 million into Geelong’s economy and created 370 jobs onsite. The building, designed by Cox Architecture, will become home to about 900 workers once COVID-19 restrictions allow. Morris Finance and EML Group will also be tenants at the building, with 75 per cent of its 11,000 square metres of lettable area pre-leased. Quintessential Equity executive chairman Shane Quinn hoped the building and Geelong’s changing skyline would boost the city’s economy and attract businesses and workers

from Melbourne. “I’m a strong believer that when you build the right buildings, the right people come,” he said. “This city-shaping building has been integral to the growth and transformation of Geelong’s business community. It’s a testament to our team to have delivered this project on time, given the constraints of the pandemic.” The building’s five-star Green Star Rating and NABERS Base Building Energy Rating reflected a growing need for premium green, healthy office space in Geelong, Mr Quinn said. The latest addition to Geelong’s skyline boasts views of Corio Bay and surrounding parklands.

YOUR SAY Hound dog Victorian Premier Andrews has just announced the lockdown will be extended in Victoria. My thoughts (apologies to Elvis); Andrews – you ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog Lyin’ all the time You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog Lyin’ all the time Well, you’re a master of spin’ n lyin And sure ain’t no friend of mine .’ Why is the premier extending the lockdown over a paltry 16 cases? Five days should mean five days. The last time five days became three weeks. This is madness! Victoria and Australia is run by nervous Nellies who are driven by fear over something which need not be feared. Alan Barron, Grovedale

Leadership missing I have lived in Geelong for the past 24 years. And have thoroughly enjoyed the time. Geelong – Victoria’s second largest city – is a treasure. A jewel in the crown of Victoria. Its greatest asset being its people. Straight shooting, hard working, for the most part. It is a pity, therefore, that its commercial and civic leaders cannot provide anything like inspirational leadership. Complacency reigns supreme. No vision for the future. It consigns future generations in this city to a life with limited hope and will force many to relocate to find employment and build a sustainable future. Geelong is being poorly served by the current set of its so-called leaders. Michael J Gamble, Belmont

Photographer and music video director Anton Corbjin’s debut feature pays a fitting tribute to Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, whose personal, professional and romantic troubles led him to commit suicide at the age of 23. Corbjin, who worked with the Manchester band, steers clear of the flashy music biopic trend, using black and white footage to detail how young Curtis (Sam Riley, right) dreamt of becoming a star like his idols David Bowie and Iggy Pop, but was instead struck down by depression, epilepsy and grief. Torn between his wife Debbie (Samantha Morton) and girlfriend Annik (Alexandra Maria Lara), while grappling with medication side-effects and the physical toll of performing, this elegiac film offers an inside perspective into Curtis’ anguished spirit.

Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper, below) is down on his luck to say the least. After spending time in a mental health facility, losing his wife and his house, he’s living with his parents (Jacki Weaver and Robert De Niro) and trying to get his life back on track, all the while sharing his family’s obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles football team. When he meets the equally messed up Tiffany (Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence), his clear plan to win back his wife gets complicated. To say this film is a mere romantic comedy is to do it a great disservice. It is sweet, yes, but also moving, heartbreaking and with bitingly funny scenes. The topnotch cast make this a must-see movie.

Bradley Cooper stars in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook.

SUPPORT LOCAL

Advertising feature

Shopping is only one click away If there’s something Geelong residents know how to do, it’s how to support their community when times are tough. While businesses have continued to adapt to challenging COVID-19 circumstances, shoppers too have changed the way they buy. In the midst of a fifth lockdown, Victorians are encouraged to continue to shop local and help small businesses thrive. Whether you’re a self-confessed shopaholic or just trying to sort out lockdown birthday gifts, online shopping is your friend. Even from home, a hit of retail therapy can generate a smile when things aren’t going to plan. With all the chaos caused by coronavirus this year, you can justify your next splurge as helping the economy, and you can happily keep the delivery vans heading your way. Local shops need your business now more than ever to survive and many have adapted their services to include online shopping, contactless click and collect and extended return policies as well as delivery and reduced delivery fees, making it easier for you to continue to support them. Lots of businesses have sales or promotions, with special discount codes and messages of support for Victorians doing the right thing by staying home during restrictions. Let’s return the favour and help them out by filling up our online carts. As we celebrate the next batch of birthdays and special occasions via video chat, it can be a fun idea to get creative with gift-giving. You

can still get a present to someone for their special day by ordering and having it delivered directly to their house (don’t forget to post their card!). Show loved ones your appreciation by sending a food hamper or flowers from a store

in their area, or gifting them an e-voucher for a local restaurant, beauty centre or community experience as something to look forward to. Shop small and go local for your groceries and essential items this lockdown. Order the

kids something to keep them busy; plenty of local businesses have educational or active games for kids. Don’t forget to spoil yourself with a treat that will make you smile – after our fifth lockdown, we all deserve it!

Artisan creates order from chaos By Luke Voogt Jack Bayley, 98, began his love of art by sketching a Clydesdale horse from a black and white photo in an Encyclopedia Britannica, loaned from his principal. Eight-six years later, the Geelong great-grandfather still remembers entering the drawing in the Royal Melbourne Show at age 12.

‘‘

the work is dynamic and takes on a life of its own

’’

- Jack Bayley “My mother said I was the best, of course, but I didn’t get any prize,” the retired industrial chemist laughed. It was not until Jack hit his 80s, when his wife fell ill with cancer, that he rediscovered that passion. “She had a get-well card sent to her,” he said. “After I drew [a copy of] it, I thought, ‘I ought to take some lessons’.” Jack found an experienced art teacher and soon developed his own unique style. “In all the 50 years he’d been teaching, he said he’d never seen anybody paint as prolifically I did,” he said. Sadly, his teacher died two years ago, but his wife is still going despite doctors having

“written her off” and a recent fall, according to Jack. Together they have 17 grandchildren and Jack, who has “lost count” of their greatgrandchildren, plans to paint “till I die”. “Time is very limited,” he said. He is also hoping for an end to the latest Victorian lockdown with his work currently

on display in his new exhibition Nature’s Contemporary at Artisans of Australia in Drysdale. “I call it ‘the academy’,” Jack said. The gallery, which opened in November 2019 just months before COVID-19 hit, has given Jack’s exhibition, initially scheduled to end on July 29, a free two-week extension.

“The gallery down in Drysdale really needs some help,” he said. “I think what they’ve done down here is very courageous.” Nature’s Contemporary, curated by Jack’s granddaughter Julia White, invites viewers to delve into the many layers of landscapes, viewing the “equilibrium that nature creates from chaos”. “I believe nature is here for order,” Jack said. “You can rely on nature – it’s not heading for chaos, it’s heading for order, and that’s my message.” The exhibition features unique patterns on recycled paper, like one resembling the top of a snow-covered forest. “It’s a bird’s eye view,” Jack agreed. Although his methods remain a mystery. “I’ve been bugged for years and years about what I do in my retirement,” he said. “I show them some samples because I can’t explain it in words. I tell my friends nature did the drawings. They walk away thinking I’ve gone around the bend!” The work delves into Chaos Theory, pioneered by mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, and Jack’s belief “God is alive”. “If Benoit Mandelbrot was here today, and he saw this on the wall, I reckon I could sell him this idea,” he said. “I believe it is metaphysical, the work is dynamic and takes on a life of its own. I never know what’s going to happen next.” Details: https://bit.ly/3it9Clb

Forever Son back after big hiatus

Forever Son frontman Jack Robbins. (Aneta Urbonaite) 16 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 23 July, 2021

Surf Coast singer-songwriter Jack Robbins will play his first live show in 18 months this August, as he prepares to launch his latest eight-track album. “It will go pretty quickly, with us experiencing all of the different emotions at the same time,” said Robbins, the frontman of local band Forever Son. “Before we know it, we’ll be back in the car driving home saying, ‘wow, that was our first show in 18 months’.” Forever Son was among many local bands and musicians that performed in Isolaid when COVID-19 hit in March 2020. After the online festival, Robbins spent 20 weeks straight playing live-streamed shows. “It was kind of bizarre – you could go back to watching a movie and eating pizza a few minutes later,” he said. “You don’t get any of the adrenalin or that connection with the ground.” Since then, he and his bandmates have survived through retail and hospitality jobs, recorded their new album Welcome To Alchemy Park and are eagerly awaiting their first live show. “It’s probably been the longest I haven’t played a live show,” he said. “The last 18 months have made music seem further away from being a full-time gig than ever before. You start to second-guess yourself and what you’re doing.” He and the band finished recording late last year and had planned to rehearse early this year. But as restrictions lifted, they spent some much-needed time catching up with each other and family for the first time in months, which lengthened the process. Subsequent lockdowns have created a massive backlog of bands and artists waiting to perform at venues in Geelong and Melbourne, according to Robbins. “As soon as there’s a lockdown, all of those shows get bumped,” he said. “You’re looking at lead times of two months now to book a show.”

The hiatus is strange for Robbins, who has performed live for almost a decade. He grew up in Anglesea listening to his dad’s Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix and Cream records – his “doorway into music” and learning guitar. “At 14 or 15 I wanted to learn how to play those songs and pretend that I was at Woodstock,” he said. Robbins started as a “place-holder” front man in another band with some mates as they looked for a lead singer. “And I’m still singing,” he said. He later took his vocals to the next level performing solo before putting together Forever Son in 2009. “I wanted to test the boundaries – I have a lot of respect for people who can command a crowd with just an acoustic guitar and their voice,” he said. The name Forever Son embodied Robbins’ “childish enthusiasm” hanging from “the rafters” or “climbing on speakers” during shows, he explained. The band features Geelong drummer James Harrison and bassist Max Fletcher, along with Melbourne guitarist Nathan Abbey. They recorded their latest album in Robbins’ Winchelsea home studio, after he moved with his partner from Torquay last year. “I’m a country boy now,” he laughed. They cannot wait to play some tracks to “feel out what crowds like and don’t’ like” with their first gig planned for Melbourne’s The Old Bar – COVID-dependent – on August 26. They also hope to book another gig at Geelong’s Barwon Club. Welcome To Alchemy Park was more “rock and roll” compared to their folksier previous releases, Robbins said. “I just wanted to dance more and get the crowd rocking. “And we wanted to get a bit louder – it’s hard to be a loud folk band. If you’re playing rock and roll you can blast over the top of everything.” Details: foreverson.com Luke Voogt

Higgins eyes game 250 By Luke Voogt Veteran forward-midfielder Shaun Higgins is set to play his 250th game against Richmond, with the Cats welcoming returning players both up forward and down back. Cats coach Chris Scott indicated dynamic forward Gary Rohan and reliable tall defender Lachie Henderson would return to bolster the side for its second grand final rematch this season with the reigning premiers. “Both those guys will be fine,” Scott told a press conference yesterday. He hinted Rhys Stanley would likely contest the ruck against returning Richmond big man Toby Nankervis on Sunday. “I thought [Stanley] was very good [last week] against one of the best ruckman in the comp [Sean Darcy],” he said. “I think Rhys more than matched him, in particular, in centre bounces.” Scott warned the Tigers were still dangerous and perhaps less predictable without their best player Dustin Martin. “It makes it more challenging for the opposition because you do have to guess a little bit as to what they’re going to without him,” he said. Scott foreshadowed star forward Jeremy Cameron returning before the finals. “We’re really confident he’ll play before the end of the home-and-away season, and give

Shaun Higgins after joining Geelong Cats last year. (Louisa Jones) 223995_23

him and us enough time to make sure he’s absolutely cherry ripe going into finals,” he said. “That would be the broad assumption based on where he is in his rehab. But what was right one day could be wrong tomorrow.” The return of key midfielder Mitch Duncan appears further away, according to Scott. “[It’s a] bit harder to tell with Mitch whether he’ll come good before the end of the home-and-away season but we’re supremely confident he’ll play this year,” he said. After dealing with a few “curveballs” from

Victoria’s most recent COVID-19 outbreak, the Cats took some time for an “opportune” rest after returning from their win over Fremantle in Perth last Thursday, Scott said. The slightly longer break between the win and this Sunday’s clash allowed a quick break before commencing a seven-week training program, he said. The break could benefit Higgins, who successfully challenged a staging fine from last Thursday ahead of his milestone game this Sunday. The Cats recruited the 33-year-old, who has kicked 227 goals in his 248 games since debuting for the Western Bulldogs, from North Melbourne last year. Higgins had begun to find form as a high half-forward after struggling with injury earlier in the year, Scott said. “The 250 milestone speaks to his resilience and perseverance, as much as his talent,” Scott said. Higgins admitted at times he had questioned his AFL career, like during 2013 when he suffered a season-ending foot injury. “There are always obstacles and [that is] probably what makes it so special,” he said. “I’m grateful that I’m still going at this age – to be given the opportunity to continue doing what I love. I still love playing, I sill enjoy the two hours and everything that goes in and around that during the week.”

Esava signs for two more years Dynamic forward-ruck Esava Ratugolea will play for Geelong until at least the end of the 2023 season after signing a two-year contract extension in time for his 50th game. “I can’t wait to see what this group does going forward, and I want to be a part of it, so it’s very exciting times,” the 22-year-old said. “I got drafted with a few of the blokes who have signed on, Jack Henry, Mark O’Connor and Brandan Parfitt. “I love the group, I can’t wait to develop my footy and grow with this club.” Ratugolea initially wanted to play rugby after his family immigrated from Fiji to New South Wales when he was young. But his family then moved from Sydney to Cobram, where “there was no rugby around”, Ratugolea told the Independent early last year. He played soccer until a friend asked him to try Aussie rules. Despite being new to the game, his athleticism and ability to split the pack eventually prompted the Murray Bushrangers to select him for the Victorian under-18 competition. The Cats selected Ratugolea at pick 43 in the 2016 national draft and he debuted in round 1, 2018. But the promising then 19-year-old broke his right leg (tibia and fibula) in just his eighth game and spent the rest of the season recovering. In 2019 he finished 17th in the AFL for contested marks and played 20 games that season. But Ratugolea suffered a knock at training earlier this year, again fracturing the same leg. Since returning from injury this season, the 197-centimetre Cat has shared ruck duties with defender-utility Mark Blicavs. More recently, he has spent most of his time up forward to bolster the Cats’ marking prowess in the absence of injured star forward Jeremy Cameron. He has steadily improved this season, impressing with his overhead marking and ability to rove his own ruck work before bursting out of the centre and delivering into the foward line. After playing nine matches in 2021, Ratugolea is set to play his 50th game against Richmond on Sunday. “Esava continues to develop his football craft in a number of roles both in the ruck and 22 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 23 July, 2021

up forward,” Geelong Cats football general manager Simon Lloyd said. “He’s exciting to watch and has great potential to build on his first 49 games. We see

Esava as a key part of the club’s next generation, and we are pleased to have secured his services.” Luke Voogt

Geelong-based Paralympian Alexandra Viney. (Rowing Australia)

Deakin’s Tokyo connection More than a dozen Deakin University students and alumni, some who have lived, studied or trained in Geelong, will compete in the Tokyo Olympics beginning today. Among them is Tasmanian-born Paralympic rower Alexandra Viney. Viney was a promising young rower throughout her high school years but at the age of 18 survived a serious, high-speed car accident, which left her with lasting impairments to her left elbow, forearm and hand. She graduated a bachelor of exercise and sport science from Deakin University and worked as a sport scientist and strength and conditioning coach in Geelong until 2019. In November 2018 she began her journey as a para-athlete chasing a second chance at her rowing dream. She was selected for the Australian Senior Para-Rowing Team in the PR3 mixed coxed four in February 2019. In May 2019, she debuted for Australia at the Gavirate International Para Regatta, placing second in the PR3 four, and fourth at her first World Championships in August 2019, in the bow of her selected boat class. She is now studying a masters of business at Deakin University and is affiliated with Barwon Rowing Club. Yesterday, on the eve of the opening ceremony today, Deakin University vice-chancellor Iain Martin congratulated the students and alumni on their selection. “On behalf of the Deakin community, I congratulate each of the athletes on being selected to compete in the games. We wish them every success,” Professor Martin said. “Competing in the Olympics is a significant accomplishment at the best of times. However, to do so against the backdrop of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding these pandemic-affected games is genuinely outstanding. “It is a testimony to their strength, determination and resilience. “While there may not be spectators in the stands at Tokyo, our athletes can rest assured that the Deakin community will be cheering them on from their lounge rooms.” Deakin University students and alumni competing in Tokyo: Hana Basic (athletics), Eziyoda ‘Ezi’ Magbegor (basketball), Alex Viney (rowing), Campbell Watts (rowing), Rebecca Allen (basketball), Rhydian Cowley (athletics), Blake Edwards (water polo), Henry Frayne (athletics), Jessica Hansen (swimming), Jeffrey Riseley (athletics), Lucy Stephan (rowing), Brooke Stratton (athletics) and Rowie Webster (water polo).
