Taxi rapist jailed A taxi driver has been jailed for raping his vulnerable 23-year-old passenger during a drive from Melbourne’s bayside to Pakenham. Shibu Paul, 46, was found guilty by a County Court of Victoria jury of the rape and sexual assault of the passenger who was feeling “very
drunk” after a 21st celebration in Frankston in June 2018. A well-meaning off-duty federal police officer had offered the victim to share a ride in Paul’s Silver Cabs taxi. After the officer was dropped off at his
home in a bayside suburb, Paul began his sustained sexual attack. He covered the cab’s onboard camera and groped the victim during a couple of stops as well as the 50 minute drive. Several times, the camera cover came off

and was hurriedly replaced by Paul. The victim described herself as frozen in shock and unable to stop him, sentencing judge Claire Quin said on 21 July. STORY PAGE 5
Founders moved on The family of a St Francis Xavier College founding father is disappointed a proposed change to House names will erase his legacy. Des McKenna is credited as sowing the seeds that led to the formation of a Catholic secondary college in the region and worked to make that vision a reality with help from the likes of Monsignor John Gallagher. Both were recognised with House names in 1995 and Mons Gallagher, Des and his wife Carmel are among the college’s 13 Living Treasures. The process of discernment for possible new House names at St Francis Xavier College began early this year, primarily to strengthen focus on its Catholic identity. STORY PAGE 3
Back in business
The sun rose a little brighter this morning for businesses across Cardinia shire who opened their doors after lockdown 5.0. Victoria’s lockdown ended on Tuesday night at 11.59pm – but officials are warning the threat of Delta still looms over the state. Local business owner from Berwick’s House of Burgers, Shoheli Sunjida said that it was fantastic news that retail and hospitality could now reopen. “I’m really looking forward to it, it’s been devastating this lockdown, it was so different

to the last one,“ Ms Sunjida said. “It’s damaged so many businesses, but we couldn’t do anything about it - so it’s been difficult.” The five reasons to leave home have been removed but masks will still be required at all times indoors and outdoors. Students were thrilled to make their way back to classrooms this morning, as schools across the shire reopened for all year levels. The five kilometre travel limit, as well as the two hour limit on exercise, have also been removed. Pubs, restaurants, cafes and bars will be
able to reopen for 100 people inside and 300 outside, with a density limit of one person per four square metres. Gyms will reopen with a similar density quotient, along with live music venues and dance classes. Community sport will also make a return. Public gatherings are limited to ten people, with 50 people allowed at weddings and funerals. Retail and beauty and personal care will open in line with density limits, as will entertainment venues and community facilities.

Freshly baked bread has never smelled so good for the staff at The Great Australian Bakehouse in Pakenham. The bakery was back in business Wednesday 21 July after closing for two days due to being listed as a tier two Covid-19 exposure site. Owner Lyn McLatchie said it was the best feeling to be back to normal after what had been a stressful two days. “We’re just grateful to be back open,“ she told the Gazette. STORY PAGE 9
