Sporting chance Juniors hit the rink again at Rollerway Newtown on Wednesday as COVID-19 restrictions eased across Victoria allowing sporting competitions to resume. Centre manager Ashlie Aparicio was thrilled the juniors could return to playing after missing just one week of competition, following lengthy lockdowns in 2020. “I think everyone was just happy to be back at the centre,” she said. “They’re always very enthusiastic about returning.” The pandemic hit Rollerway hard in 2020, forcing multiple cancellations of its weekend and school holiday sessions. But the centre emerged relatively unscathed from the latest lockdown, due to it occurring just after the school holidays, Ms Aparicio said. “We’re quite lucky that we were able to have our winter holidays largely unaffected,” Ms Aparicio said. “We’re happy to be back and we’re looking forward to seeing all the kids on the weekend.”

Hospitality jobs crisis Geelong hospitality businesses are facing significant worker shortages with masses leaving the industry for more stable work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The shortages have hamstrung the ability of restaurants, cafes and pubs to rebound by capitalising on easing restrictions, according to Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ben Flynn. “Continued restrictions and lockdowns are affecting hospitality more than any other industry, and many of their employees are casual,” he said.
“A lot of people have left the industry, and it’s heartbreaking for those businesses dealing with restrictions and then not being able to scale up when they’re finally allowed to. “They’re in a position where they’re unable to take bookings because they don’t have enough chefs or waiters to serve customers.” Telegraph Hotel owner Sam Longo said his venue had been “a seven-day operation pre-COVID” but had reduced its opening days to five. With the constant threat of lockdown, many hospitality workers had left the industry to find more stable work like stacking shelves in supermarkets, he said.
“They don’t know when they’re going to get work and that’s why we’ve had so many people leave the industry. “Before COVID we had 40 staff and seven chefs. Now we’ve got 30 staff and five chefs. “We’re lucky we haven’t lost a lot of people. It’s very difficult to find chefs and front-of-house people.” Fishermen’s Pier managing director Paul Ramia feared worker shortages would prevent his business from rebounding when COVID-19 restrictions eased further. “The industry’s really struggling to find staff,” he said. “Pre-COVID I’d put an ad out and I’d get 50
or 60 people apply for a job, now I’m lucky to get five or six.” Like Mr Longo, he had heard of many workers leaving the industry to work in supermarkets or as prison guards. Mr Flynn said investment in hospitality training would be vital to help businesses recover after COVID-19. “Governments working with local training organisations to address these shortage gaps is something we’re hugely advocating for,” he said. “I know that places like The Gordon [TAFE] are very much on the front foot in addressing some of these skills gaps.” 12504656-JW29-21

Pharmacies to join vaccine effort By Luke Voogt Geelong pharmacists will begin vaccinating locals against COVID-19 next month, with the move expected to increase local immunisations by several hundred each day. Highton pharmacist Erin Heer was one of many who this week received notice that they would begin receiving supplies of the AstraZenca vaccine. “We’re expecting stock some time in the next few weeks,” she said. Ms Heer said her pharmacy could vaccinate up to 50 or 60 people per day, based on influenza injections in 2020. “We did nearly 1000 flu vaccines last year.
That’s more than usual but we coped with that influx. “We’re accessible. GP clinics are busy with regular patients and all that preventative medicine – they’re playing catch-up with [following lockdowns].” The development follows months of waiting for pharmacists across Geelong who applied to administer the vaccine in February and were assessed as “suitable”, such as Glenn Bennett-Hullin. “It’s been a very frustrating process for us because we just want to step up and help,” the Hamlyn Heights pharmacist said. “The impression from everybody was that pharmacies were going to come online by June.”
Mr Bennett-Hullin reckoned his pharmacy could also vaccinate about 50 people a day against COVID-19 once supplies arrive. “We’ve been ready and waiting since March,” he said. “It’s a relief that we’ll be able to help our customers who have been approaching us daily since back in March. “I just got an email [on Tuesday] asking if we are still interested in providing vaccines, which we are. It makes sense to bring on extra vaccinators as soon as possible.” According to The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, pharmacies will receive up to 300 vaccines each per week. Barwon Health’s Norlane vaccine hub can
inoculate up to 2400 people per day, with general practices also providing COVID-19 jabs. A guild spokesperson said about two thirds of pharmacies nationwide had a vaccination capability. With almost 100 pharmacies in Geelong and on the Surf Coast, adding two thirds of those to the rollout could increase vaccinations in region by several hundred each day, the spokesperson said. The guild expects pharmacies to begin providing Moderna and Pfizer vaccines between late September and early October, when supplies become more plentiful in Australia.

Detectives investigating the death of a 66-year-old woman in Winchelsea have ruled out foul play following the discovery of her body on Monday. “We’re preparing a report for the coroner and it’s not being deemed as suspicious,” Geelong Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie confirmed to the Independent yesterday. Emergency services attended a worksite on Main Street about 12.40pm following reports of a deceased woman. The woman, Eliza McCarthy, was a contributor at community newspaper the Winchelsea Star. Ms McCarthy wrote poetry and about public events in her contributions to the volunteer-run newspaper. On July 3 she wrote of her excitement in receiving a response from Buckingham Palace after writing a letter to Queen Elizabeth II to wish the monarch a happy 92nd birthday. Ms McCarthy was a member of Winchelsea Uniting Church and regularly attended congregations. Torquay Crime Investigation Unit detectives are awaiting an autopsy, with the result due in coming days. The Independent understands detectives are investigating the possibility that Ms McCarthy suffered a medical episode before collapsing in a housing estate off Main Street, near Moran Way.

Cafes, pubs and restaurants across Geelong reopened on Wednesday as COVID-19 restrictions eased across Victoria. Telegraph Hotel owner of 15 years Sam Longo was pleased to welcome customers back. “We’re always happy to reopen – that’s who we are and what we do,” he said. He thanked Geelong locals for supporting his venue and the hospitality sector in general. “The support is there, it really is. The people are fantastic and really understanding of the tribulations we’ve been through. ”We’ve already got 100 booked for Sunday lunch and we’ve got to be careful to keep them separate.” But the amount, the maximum for indoor venues under new restrictions, was well short of the hotel’s pre-COVID capacity of 300 people, he said. Mr Longo warned that threat of further lockdowns and the effort involved in repetitively closing and reopening at short notice would likely make life very tough for sector for at least another few months. “There are so many venues that wouldn’t be open today,” he said. “It just doesn’t happen in 24 hours.” Fishermen’s Pier managing director Paul Ramia said business had been slow initially on Wednesday following the easing of restrictions. “It’s been pretty difficult because it takes a good couple of weeks to get the momentum going, and to give the patrons a bit of confidence,” he said. “Mind you, we’ve had quite a few bookings for the weekend. It will be good to get some local support.” Restrictions now allow restaurants and cafes open for seated service for a maximum of 100 costumers with a group limit of 10 and a density limit of one person per four square metres.

Council targets zero emissions By Luke Voogt Geelong council has targetted zero net emissions by 2035 in its draft Climate Change Response Plan. Council on Tuesday night voted unanimously to endorse the draft document, which outlines its corporate response to climate change. Council’s climate change action chair Belinda Moloney said the issue “threatens every aspect of our lives”. “After heavy campaigning by constituents and protests around the world, I’m glad
that council is taking action on what is a dire emergency situation of life-or-death consequences,” Cr Moloney said. “Sustainable caretaking of our environment must be placed at the forefront of our decision-making, not because it’s on trend or winning votes. “Council and councillors have a duty of care to educate ourselves and our community as to how to correct our actions and do our part to avoid wide-scale catastrophic climate-related events.” The document calls for a co-ordinated
community response including increasing energy efficiency and renewable energy production, and switching to sustainable transport and cleaner fuels. The draft includes 80 actions as a “roadmap for collaborative action” to make Geelong a “climate-ready” city. According the draft plan, council successfully exceeded its last corporate emissions reduction target of 50 per cent by 2020 and is well-placed to assist community efforts to further reduce emissions. Emissions have been falling for the past five years following investments in renewable energy, capturing and using
methane from landfill, and major building efficiency improvements, the document states. Notable projects include the installation of more than one megawatt of solar systems across 27 council facilities. Council is currently converting 25,000-plus street lights to LED luminaires and aims to procure zero-emissions electricity for all operations over the next decade through the Victorian Energy Collaboration Project. The document is open for community feedback until August 25 at yoursay. geelongaustralia.com.au

Fantasy gamers mark Friendship Day Grovedale and Reservoir gamers Scott Baldwin and Tim Lower have only met once, but their friendship has withstood the test of lockdown. They first crossed paths several years ago through their avatars on quests in the virtual world of Final Fantasy XIV Online. Red Rooster franchisee Scott started playing the game in 2013 as an alternative to first-person shooters. “They got me with the free 30 days,” he laughed. “I was heavily into Call of Duty and things like that, but player-versus-player games tend to create a bit of conflict, and I was getting sick of that.”
4 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 30 July, 2021
“Tim seemed to be everywhere that I was going and we seemed to be doing similar stuff. We sort of hit it off from there.” The pair met at the PAX gaming festival in Melbourne in 2018. While they have not seen each other since, Tim, who works at panel beater, helped Scott order parts and avoid being overcharged when he had a car accident a few months ago. Scott and Tim say their comradery has proven invaluable during COVID-19, amid International Friendship Day today. “We jump on voice chat semi-regularly, have a yarn and complain about Melbourne lockdowns, which inevitably flow onto
Geelong,” Scott said. “It’s good, in the absence of seeing people, that you can speak regularly, because going home and speaking to no one isn’t any good.” Their Final Fantasy friendship group includes players trapped in Sydney’s latest lockdown, according to Tim. “There’s one guy who’s right in that Fairfield cluster. Luckily, he hasn’t got it,” Tim said. “It’s always nice to have that somebody there. We all lean on each other when we’ve got issues. “There are serious chats but mostly we just talk rubbish amongst ourselves to let off steam.” Luke Voogt
An Armstrong Creek man has discovered he is the mystery winner of $834,643 in TattsLotto’s Saturday night draw, ending a two-day search for the lucky ticket-holder. “I’ve only just found out,” the man in his 20s told a lotto official on Monday afternoon. “There was a post on The Lott’s Facebook page about how you were still looking for a winner in the area. I knew I had a ticket but thought I’d wait. “Well, that only lasted about 10 minutes. I ended up scanning the ticket on the app and there it was! “I don’t think I’ll be able to concentrate at work today, but I’ll be back at work tomorrow, I promise! I haven’t played TattsLotto for about two years, but then I started again about a month ago, just getting a ticket each week. “It will certainly help with the mortgage and making life a little bit more comfortable.” The man was one of seven division one-winning entries in the draw nationally and bought his ticket from NewsXpress Armstrong Creek. Store owner Wayne Davis said he was “over the moon” following the newsagents’ second division one-winning entry in 12 months. “Our customers were so excited the last time we sold a division one-winning entry and I’m sure the same excitement will be buzzing around the community,” he said. “My staff also get so ecstatic when we sell division one, wondering if they are the ones that pressed the button to produce that winning ticket.” The odds of winning TattsLotto’s Saturday night draw per game are one in 8,145,060.

Funding aids COVID recovery By Luke Voogt Seven Geelong and Surf Coast projects will receive more than $1.7 million to promote the region in a bid to boost its COVID-19 recovery. Four local MPs yesterday visited Buckley Falls to announce the funding, part of a $10 million investment in more than 50 projects through state government’s Regional Recovery Fund. A marketing campaign aimed at increasing tourism into Geelong with flights into Avalon Airport will receive $450,000.
Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine received $200,000 for its Brand Geelong campaign and another $400,000 for its events attraction program. The Brand Geelong campaign aims to promote the city as a destination to work, live, invest, study and visit, while the events attraction program offers incentives to businesses booking events in region. Another $400,000 will go toward Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism’s program to address hospitably worker shortages due to COVID-19.
Events recovery programs run by Geelong and Surf Coast Shire councils will receive $32,625 each, with another $15,000 for the Borough of Queenscliffe’s program. “This investment will make sure that Geelong and the Surf Coast have the resources they need to move forward and respond quickly to the impacts of the past year,” South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said. Lara MP and former tourism and events minister John Eren said the sectors employed thousands of people locally and were worth more than $1 billion to greater Geelong.
The funding also received praise from upper house Labor colleague Gayle Tierney, currently serving as Bellarine MP. “This is an important, and I know welcomed, funding boost for regions like the Bellarine Peninsula, especially for local tourism and hospitality businesses after meeting the challenges of the last 18 months,” she said. Geelong MP Christine Couzens said: “We are working to ensure our region has the support … to move beyond last year’s challenges and thrive into the future, helping to make it an even better place to live, work, visit and invest”.
Skate bros dream of gold Belmont brothers Paddy and Leo Mccaughley hope to skateboard in the Los Angeles or Brisbane Olympics after winning state and national championships earlier this year. Paddy won the under 10s title at the Australian Skateboarding League National Championships at Moomba festival in March, while older brother Leo was third in Victoria in the under 13s, according to proud mum Ange Liston-Mccaughley. “My hubby Leif was a sponsored skater back in the day and taught them all their tricks, and now coaches them,” she said. The boys will tune in to cheer on Australian hopeful Kieran Woolley in the park skateboarding heats in the Tokyo Olympics next Thursday. They met the 17-year-old at Moomba, where he won the open championship on his path to the Tokyo Olympics – the first in history to include skateboarding as a sport.
“It’s so good to have skateboarding in the Olympics and getting the coverage it deserves,” Ange said. “It’s great for the young ones to have some role models to look up to.” Paddy and Leo hope to head to Mackay, Queensland, in September, depending on the COVID-19 situation, after being chosen to compete in the Australian Skateboarding Federation’s street championships – AKA Rumble on the Reef. “All these championships are training them up for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics or Brisbane in 2032,” Ange said. Geelong Cats have backed Newtown developer Rory Costelloe’s Dry July fundraiser in memory of his younger brother Justin, who died of cancer in 2018. “Of all of our siblings – he was probably the cleanest, healthiest, most-outdoorsy person,” Mr Costelloe remembered. “It just goes to show it can hit anybody.” The Cats donated a signed team jumper to the quest, with former champion defender Andrew Mackie organising the memorabilia for a prize draw for donors. Mr Costelloe pledged to match any donations dollar-for-dollar in the final week of July, after raising about $7000 in his first three weeks of giving up the grog. The Villawood Properties founder had topped up his fundraiser twice
to match donations by yesterday, bringing his tally to $13,200. “The money we raise in Dry July will go toward practical ways of improving the comfort of people struck by cancer,” Mr Costelloe said. “It might be advice from specialist nurses, or finding accommodation, maybe getting into a wellness program … if we work together we can all help make cancer patients, and their families, a bit more comfortable.” Meanwhile, Geelong Cats great Billy Brownless has raised $46,000 for Barwon Health Foundation by abstaining from his love of “frothies” for Dry July. MY GEELONG Next Wednesday Philippa Challis marks both four years since surviving uterine cancer and five years since losing her husband to another form of cancer. She speaks to Luke Voogt about founding Laughter Club Geelong and Geelong Regional Cancerians.
Why did you establish Geelong Regional Cancerians in April 2018? My husband Derek passed away on August 4, 2016. It all happened in a month. He had oesophageal cancer. The surgery was successful but unfortunately his body had been through too much, having had surgeries for other health issues earlier in the year. August 4 will also be exactly four years since I became a uterine cancer survivor in 2017. So it’s a bittersweet date for me. I was lucky that I recognised the symptoms, got diagnosed and had a life-saving hysterectomy, all in under six weeks. I wanted to give back to the community, educate people and make them aware, so I founded the Geelong Regional Cancerians. We work to raise awareness of the symptoms of uterine cancer and fundraise for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation’s research into all cancers. How did Laughter Club Geelong begin? Laughter yoga first came into the world in 1995 when GP Madan Kataria started the movement
in Mumbai, India, which has since expanded to 10,000 clubs in hundreds of countries. I started Laughter Club Geelong in July 2002. We do a range of activities at Eastern Beach each Saturday, which are now mostly online due to COVID-19. It’s about letting your inner child out. Our activities start off as intentional laughter. But when you share it with other people, before you know it, it turns into the real thing. Last weekend we held a Zoom session where we invited those who dared to dress in their pyjamas, a onesie or nightie. What are your favourite things to do locally? I love dining out at local venues, like Two Sugars in Geelong West, Mavs in central Geelong and Pier Street in Portarlington. How are you coping with COVID-19? The laughter sessions on Zoom help give people optimism and a sense of control. People are getting me to do laughter sessions all over the world, it’s heaps of fun! What’s something about you that people might not know? I used to race cars and I’m one of the founders of Women for Wheels. I used to do hill climbs in a friend’s MGTF 1500 and amateur racing in another friend’s Mustang at Calder, Sandown and Winton raceways. When I met Derek in the ’60s he had a Valiant and that was brilliant for the Motorkhana.

Mowing ahead after rough years Young go-getter Jesse, who moved to Ocean Grove a few weeks ago, is living proof a person can rise above a tough upbringing. The 12-year-old speaks to Luke Voogt about his childhood, his mowing enterprise and his plans to get ahead.
A
fter escaping a troubled childhood, 12-year-old Jesse has amazed friends and family with how far he has come. “They’re surprised because, with everything that’s happened in my life, I haven’t turned out a horrible kid,” he said, a few weeks after moving to Ocean Grove to live with older sister Hayleigh. “They say I’m going to go a long way in life.” Police removed Jesse from his parents’ house in Horsham when he was six-years-old, the same day his older brother Paul, then 24, died from plastic anaemia at Geelong’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre on June 9, 2015. For years Paul had battled the rare disorder, in which the bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells. Jesse spent the night after Paul died at Horsham Police Station. Officers initially considered taking him back after a severe incident at home, he said. But the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) stepped in to remove him from the dangerous environment, he said. Jesse lived at several different foster homes and spent some time with his aunt and uncle. But none of those living arrangements worked out. Eventually, he moved in with his grandmother in a new Craigieburn estate a few years ago. Last October, when Jesse wanted to buy components to build a computer, his grandmother gave him a great idea to help him save and, as it turned out, get ahead. “My grandmother pulled out her mower and said, ‘why don’t you go do some door-knocking?’” he said. “She wanted me to Jesse and, inset, with sister Hayleigh. Drop a pin before the end of July. We have joined Monash University’s XYX Lab and CrowdSpot in a study to help gather perceptions of safety in public spaces. YourGround is a proactive tool that will help capture the experiences of safety for women and gender-diverse people by mapping local streets, parks, trails and recreational spaces. The interactive map allows users to anonymously drop a pin, tell a story or share an experience while out for leisure, sport, exercise or play. When collated and analysed, this data will provide insights to help inform the planning for more inclusive and equitable urban areas, parks and sporting and community spaces. Women and gender-diverse people are invited to share their stories prior to the end of July about where they feel safe or unsafe in Greater Geelong at yoursay.geelongaustralia.com.au/ yourground

TOP PICKS OF THE WEEK
BEAUTY AND THE GEEK NINE, 7pm
SUNDAY
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK 10 BOLD, 11.20pm
Pat (Bradley Cooper, left) is down on his luck to say the least. After spending time in a mental health facility, he’s living back with his parents (Jacki Weaver and Robert De Niro) and trying to get his life back on track. When he meets the equally messed up Tiffany (Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence), his clear plan to win back his wife gets complicated. To say this film is a mere romantic comedy is to do it a great disservice. It is sweet, yes, but also heartbreaking and with bitingly funny scenes.
TUESDAY
THE CHEAP SEATS TEN, 9pm
Comedians Melanie Bracewell and Tim McDonald, two of the cheekiest and cleverest panellists on Have You Been Paying Attention?, are breaking out on their own in this new comic current affairs offering. Produced by Working Dog, the team behind HYBPA? as well as The Panel, Frontline, Utopia and Thank God You’re Here, The Cheap Seats boasts a very promising pedigree. Taking a look back on the week in news – from major stories, entertainment and sport to viral videos, notso-major but amusing stories and anything to do with cats – Bracewell and McDonald promise to leave you in stitches with their unique view of the world.

The show will go on at the Shed By Luke Voogt Shapeshifting St Kilda singer-songwriter Delsinki – AKA Craig Johnston – plans to “keep the circle unbroken” and push ahead with a planned Drysdale concert. Delsinki is the man behind the Sing a Song of Sixpence tour, scheduled to kick off at the Potato Shed on August 6, dependent on COVID-19 restrictions. “I think we’re just going to play it by ear, because we’re two weeks out,” he said. “If we get hamstrung by restrictions, we’ll definitely postpone it to another date. “It will be a nightmare to postpone, because there’s lots of artists and they’ve all got their own projects. “But by hook or by crook we’ll make it happen, next fortnight or down the road.” Earlier this year Delsinki and John Kendall, who play together in Melbourne band Row Jerry Crow, put together the Keep the Circle Unbroken tour to “reignite” music across regional Victoria amid the pandemic. “I’m a musician myself, I’m not a touring or booking agent, although it’s starting to become like that,” Delsinki laughed. “John had the idea, and I took it and made it happen.” The 1972 album Will The Circle Be Unbroken, released to reunite a divided US after the Vietnam War, inspired the concept, Delsinki explained. “They [The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band] were trying to bring people together under the banner of music, and we thought that was a good analogy for what we wanted to do,” he said. Like Keep the Circle Unbroken, each stop in Sing a Song of Sixpence features local artists joining the musicians playing throughout the tour. Keep the Circle Unbroken missed Geelong in March, so Delsinki was keen to launch his latest collaborative tour in that area, he said. Delsinki and Kendall will join popular Australian ’70s and ’80s songstress Debra Byrne, along with Joyce Prescher, Simon Phillips and Geelong blues artist Wayne Jury for the Drysdale concert. “I was going to get Wayne Jury on the first tour but the dates didn’t work out, so I made sure I could get him on this one,” he said. “It’s going to be good playing with him.” Delsinki grew up in a music-loving household in Tasmania, before moving to Melbourne later in life. “My mum’s a dance teacher, so I grew up with a lot of music in the house,” he said. After playing in bands and cover acts, and collaborating with filmmakers and the

Australian Chamber Orchestra, he took on the name Delsinki. His music mixes folk rock, cabaret, poetry, rap, ballads and even Latin rhythm, flitting from one style to another each track. “I think that comes from being an independent artist,” he said. “There’s no group of people telling you what you should and
shouldn’t be doing. I just like making stuff for me and if other people enjoy it, that’s a bonus. It’s kind of liberating.” And his musical collaborations over the years have been as eclectic as his music. He has joined creative forces with Jim Moginie from Midnight Oil, Steve Pigram from the Pigram Brothers and Brian Ritchie
from the Violent Femmes, just to name a few. In his latest collaboration, he invites his fellow musicians to share their songs and the stories behind them, whether they have fallen suddenly from the ether or are a slow labour of love. “It’s all about showcasing people who play instruments and write songs,” he said. Festival May’d to shine a light on local creators
Rachel Burke works on a lampshade. (Supplied) 16 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 30 July, 2021
A festival shining a light on Geelong creators, like lampshade artist Rachel Burke, is set to go ahead next month after organisers postponed the event for the third time. The Highton mother-of-two hopes to join fashionistas, jewellers, painters, drawers, mixed-media designers and more for May’d Arts Festival in August. “I’m pretty optimistic,” Burke said. “You can easily run it as a COVIDSafe event and we were always planning to do that.” Organisers initially planned to run the festival in its namesake month of May, but COVID-19 lockdowns forced them to postpone to June and again to July. The festival had previously been rescheduled for today but, with restrictions only just easing on Wednesday from Victoria’s latest lockdown, organisers have again postponed to August. But Burke, whose work has been on display in a window of Creative Geelong’s hub at Centrepoint Arcade for months, has found a silver lining in the repeated delays. “It would have been done and dusted if it had gone ahead in May, but we’re still talking about
it now, so that’s not such a bad thing,” she said. “It’s given me extra time to see all the pieces that I’ve made together in the window. “This is the first opportunity I’ve had to put everything together in a single installation.” The former graphic designer began her “passion project” of crafting lampshades from comics, children’s book covers, pictures of the solar system and more after leaving work to raise her kids. “A lot of women start crafting while looking after younger children, when they’ve got a bit of time,” she said. “But the lamp thing just grew and grew. I trawled through op shops and kept finding blank lampshades that were a bit dirty or needed some love. “You get all these lighting possibilities with vintage papers like maps, old pianola roles, sewing patterns, recipes and sheet music. “Once people started seeing the light shining through the lampshade, they were amazed.” A decade ago Burke moved with her family to her husband’s childhood home of Geelong. “We’ve been in London, Queensland and Sydney, but eventually Geelong pulled us
back,” she said. “We’ve adopted the bay city as our home.” The “flourishing” local arts scene, “op shops galore” and Geelong’s improving recycling programs only inspired her creativity further, she said. “It’s such a great environment to take on your passions. Everywhere I look I’m getting inspired.” She sells her lamps and other unique furniture through her home-based business Patturn Studio. When the market-style festival finally goes ahead, Burke will join her fellow makers displaying and selling their wares, with a large portion created from reused or ‘upcycled’ materials. Event director Luisa La Fornara said Creative Geelong was still finalising a date for the festival but planned to hold it in mid to late August. “We’re committed to making it happen to support our local creatives,” she said. Cats secure AFLW draft haul Geelong Cats selected Calder Cannons midfielder Georgie Prespakis and teammate Zali Friswell with their first two picks in the AFLW draft on Tuesday night. The Cats, who placed second-last this season, used selection two to acquire 168cm inside midfielder Prespakis, the younger sister of Carlton’s Madison Prespakis. The club described the 18-year-old’s stoppage skills as elite and her kicking as a strength. “Prespakis is a strong clearance player with great overhead ability,” the club said. Prespakis won the NAB League (under-19) best and fairest as a 16-year-old in 2019 and was named in the AFLW Academy squad in 2021. Her teammate Friswell was one of the NAB League’s most consistent players, according to the Cats. “Friswell finds the ball, finds space and uses it cleanly,” the club said. “A well-balanced, agile player, she is able to hit a target with precision.”
Geelong Cats have drafted Georgie Prespakis at selection two. (AFL Photos)
Friswell has spent time in the back and forward pockets this year for the Cannons and Essendon VFLW, but is at her most damaging through the midfield. The Cats also picked Geelong Falcon forward-ruck Gabbi Featherston and Geelong VFLW midfielder Annabel Johnson with selections nine and 15. “An impactful forward, Featherston’s
athleticism, contested marking and ability to hit the scoreboard are among her key strengths,” the Cats said. “At 170cm, the 17-year-old has an impressive vertical leap. Featherston’s ability to step into a secondary ruck role at NAB League level has set her apart this year.” Hailing from Apollo Bay, Featherston also played for Colac Imperials in 2021. Featherston’s late father Peter was a former Geelong Falcon and a champion of the Colac and District Football League. Johnson’s rise to Geelong’s AFLW list has been rapid since she took up football less than a year ago. Originally from Echuca, the 20-year-old moved to the Geelong region to begin her studies at Deakin University. With a background in netball and soccer, Johnson joined Geelong’s VFLW side for 2021. The athletic 167cm midfielder played 14 games this season, averaging 14.6 disposals, 2.7 marks and 4.8 tackles.
She will line up for the Cats in this weekend’s VFLW preliminary final. Geelong Falcons Annie Lee, Tess Craven and Ingrid Houtsma will their join former teammate Featherston in entering the AFLW. Lee went to Carlton at pick 10, Craven to North Melbourne at pick 13 and Houtsma to Richmond at pick 50. Craven watched the draft on the AFL website with Drysdale’s senior women’s team joining her on Zoom, she told the Ocean Grove Voice on Wednesday. “[The club has] been behind me from the day I was born, pretty much,” she said. “When I was little, mum and dad wouldn’t have to worry that if they were busy they wouldn’t have to look after me because there was always someone who would.” The St Ignatius student travelled to Arden Street on Wednesday for an induction day before returning to school. Her father Stuart played local football and coaches Drysdale’s senior women’s team.

Angus Widdicombe in action in the stroke seat with the Australian’s men’s eight. (Rowing Australia)
Angus to row for medal By Luke Voogt Geelong-raised rower Angus Widdicombe could win a medal in his first Olympics after he and the Australian men’s eight team scraped into today’s final. The former Newtown local and his Australian comrades started slowly in the second-chance repechage on Wednesday, spending much of the race in fifth (last) place. But the Aussies fought back valiantly to edge out the Romanians by just over two seconds to place fourth and qualify for the final. Widdicombe grew up rowing on the Barwon River and joined Barwon Rowing Club after graduating Geelong College, before moving onto the Mercantile Rowing Club and later relocating to Canberra. The 26-year-old already has three world championship silver medals to his name.
At the 2017 World Rowing Championships, Widdicombe won silver alongside Darcy Wruck and James Rook in the men’s coxed pair. In 2018 he was part of the men’s eight team that came second in both the World Rowing Championships and World Rowing Cup 3. In the men’s eight repechage at the Olympics he rowed in the stroke seat, which is located closest to the stern. The stroke seat is generally reserved for the best rower in the boat, who helps set the rhythm for the rest of the crew along with the coxswain. The Australians are scheduled to take on powerhouse teams from the US, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands and Great Britain in the final at 11.25am AEST today. Striker Kyra Cooney-Cross, who attended high school in Torquay, and the Matildas will take on Great Britain in the quarter finals tonight at 7pm, after holding the top-ranked
US team for a 0-0 draw on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old is playing in her debut Olympics for the Australian women’s soccer team. The Matildas, ninth in the world in the FIFA rankings, go in as slight underdogs against Great Britain for a chance at the semi-finals. The Great Britain side consists mostly of English players, with the England women’s team ranked sixth in the world. Bellarine horse rider and oldest member of the Australian team at the Tokyo Olympics, Mary Hanna, placed 40th in the individual dressage and 13th in the team event this week. The 66-year-old is competing in an incredible sixth Olympics after making her debut in Atlanta in 1996. Aireys Inlet long-distance runner Ellie Pashley is set to make her Olympic debut in the women’s marathon next Saturday, August 7.
Geelong small forward Gryan Miers has re-fractured his right leg in a virtual repeat of the injury that sidelined him for 13 rounds earlier this year. Miers had made his return to the AFL in round 16 after recovering from a hairline fracture to his lower leg (fibula) in round 3. The initial injury sidelined Miers for almost 50 days, with the 22-year-old playing two games in the VFL in June before returning to the AFL in round 16. He took a total of 88 days to regain his place in the Cats’ senior side following the injury. Miers sustained his latest injury in a knock to the site of his previous fracture in Geelong’s win over Richmond last Sunday, the Cats confirmed on Tuesday. He will miss several weeks, although the Cats are optimistic he can return in time for the finals despite the previous injury sidelining him for about seven weeks. “Gryan has been incredibly unlucky, with what appears a minor re-fracture of the previously-healed bone,” Geelong Cats football general manager Simon Lloyd said. “Medical team have consulted with several specialists today and determined surgery will not be required. “We expect Gryan to undergo a similar path to recovery as earlier in the season and are optimistic Gryan will play football again in 2021.” Prior to round 3 this season, Miers had played 53 consecutive AFL games since his debut in round 1, 2019. Take two for Higgins Veteran forward-midfielder Shaun Higgins is set to play his 250th game against former side North Melbourne after knee soreness denied him the milestone last Sunday. The 33-year-old was a late withdrawal prior to Geelong’s thrashing of Richmond but appears almost a certainty for tomorrow afternoon, with small forward Gryan Miers out injured. “[The soreness] was relatively minor,” Geelong Cats football general manager Simon Lloyd said on Wednesday. “We’d expect him to be available this week.” Higgins’ former side is currently on the bottom of the ladder. But Cats coach Chris Scott was wary of the Kangaroos’ strengths following their resurgence in recent weeks, he told a press conference yesterday. “The last month or so they’ve been well and truly in the top half of the ladder in a lot of key indicators, and they know the ground down there in Hobart well,” he said. “They’ve been a real challenge for pretty good sides.” The Cats will share a flight with the Kangaroos to Hobart for the game at Bluestone Arena, which Scott said would be his first coaching at the venue. following a cork against the Tigers that left him “hobbling around for a few days post-game”, Scott said. “He’s not bad enough for us to rule him out just yet.” Scott remained optimistic that star forward Jeremy Cameron would return in time for finals. “We think that’s probably a couple of weeks as it stands right at the moment although Jeremy’s looking in really good shape, so it might be a little sooner than that,” he said. Esava Ratugolea has showcased his impressive overhead marking up forward in
Cameron’s absence, leaving Scott with selection dilemma in a few weeks’ time. Ratugolea could potentially replace Rhys Stanley in the ruck or a smaller forward to give the Cats an extra marking target when Cameron returns. “The jury’s still out long-term as to whether Esava ends up as ruckman or key [forward],” Scott said. The Cats are also working through “hypotheticals” other than their talls, according to Scott, with players like Sam Simpson fighting to get back into the side after sustaining injuries earlier in the year. “He was in our preferred team in the [2020] grand final, which speaks to how we rate him,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of guys that we think are playing well enough to deliver on the AFL stage.” Scott sent his best wishes to North Melbourne star Ben Cunnington, who underwent surgery to remove a testicular tumour on Tuesday. “We’ve had a lot of examples over the last 18 months that really make it hit home that, while footy feels like the most important thing in our existence most of the time, deep down we know it’s not,” he said. “On behalf of the Geelong footy club, we hope that he comes through OK.”

Bradford to fight for two belts Geelong Muay Thai fighter Chris Bradford is set to fight for two belts against undefeated Altona kickboxer Atdhe ‘Prince’ Bunjaku. Bradford has put his World Kickboxing Federation (WKBF) Muay Thai Heavyweight Title on the line for the unique bout to decide the new International Kickboxing Federation (IKBF) Heavyweight Title. “It’s probably the first time it’s been done in kickboxing, which is why it’s got the attention of the Australian fight community and some of the world fight community as well,” Bradford said. Bradford admitted he had to adjust his training for the clash of two styles and two weight divisions, which will be his first fight since COVID-19 hit Australia in March 2020 and fought under kickboxing rules. “I’m primarily a Muay Thai fighter, which is a lot more bloodthirsty and harder, so we’ve never crossed paths in the ring before,” he said. 22 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 30 July, 2021
“I’m well known for throwing my elbows, which is a devastating technique but not allowed in kickboxing. “I’ve spent a lot of time throwing accidental elbows at my training partner, which has been quite funny but dangerous.” The 43-year-old has 27 wins, including nine knockouts, and a draw from his 41 fights, while current IKBF lightheavyweight champion Prince Bunjaku has an impressive record of 15-0, including 10 KOs. “He’s always fought a lower weight division than me,” Bradford said. “We’ve spent a few years fighting on the circuits, watching each other fight. Myself and Prince are actually friends – but guaranteed we’ll put on a show and punch each other very hard. “My edge will be the fact that I’m a very aggressive fighter. My motto in life is stand tall and walk forward, which is how I fight. “I like to put forward pressure on and walk
my opponents down. I don’t think Prince will be used to that style.” But Bradford said he would not take any chances against the lighter fighter. “I’m going to train very hard, make sure I do my job correctly and come home with the win,” he said. The fight is scheduled for August 7 at Grand Star Receptions in Altona North, possibly without a crowd due to COVID-19 restrictions. “Crowd or no crowd, I’m looking forward to returning to the ring and doing what I do best,” Bradford said. He encouraged Geelong locals to visit www. fite.tv to livestream the pay-per-view bout. “I’d like all of Geelong to get behind me,” he said. Bunjaku’s light-heavyweight title will not be up for grabs due to him going up a weight class.
Anglers target garfish during lockdown ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos The most recent COVID-19 lockdown has made getting out for a fish challenging, but for anglers who managed to wet a line within foive kilometres of home, there has been some respectable fishing on offer. Right through the Geelong waterfront has been fishing very well for pinky snapper with anglers casting soft plastics around the shore and surrounding structures finding plenty of fish. The pinkies have been in fantastic numbers with the majority being either side of 28cm, with a fair share of fish getting over 40cm too. Australian salmon have also been in very good numbers but, unfortunately, they are not very big. Garfish have been a popular target species during the lockdown with the whole inner harbour fishing very well for them. Anywhere from Cunningham Pier to Grammar School Lagoon has been fishing very well for garfish, with St Helens being the prime spot to be. A simple pencil float rig with a tiny cut of silver fish for bait is the perfect setup to run, with plenty of burley to get them in the area. After restrictions eased on Wednesday, local anglers can begin to cast their net a little bit wider. The Queenscliff harbour and Barwon estuary should both still be fishing well for trevally. Fishing with bait or casting lures should both result in plenty of bites. Strong winds will have stirred up the King George whiting along the Bellarine Peninsula, with St Leonards being a spot well worth looking at. The stronger tides are the better times to fish for them, with pipis and squid as prime baits. If you’re still after a barrel tuna, then Apollo bay is well worth a look. After a few weeks of bad weather and minimal boats on the water, the fish will have had a nice break and can be expected to chew pretty freely. JB Micro Dingos are a fantastic lure to troll around the area as the fish were last feeding on small baitfish. Portland was fishing very well on the shelf for both bluefin tuna and albacore before the lockdown. Trolling lumo-coloured skirted lures and Rapala X-Raps are by far the best lures to run in the spread.
