Early morning fire in arcade

Here’s to 100 years of Exell-ence

A blaze that broke out at 4am Tuesday 3 August in Centre Court Arcade Pakenham is being treated as suspicious. The fire started in the rear of the arcade and was extinguished a short time later, leaving extensive damage to several shops and the ceiling of the arcade. Pakenham stalwart Graham Treloar, who works Tuesdays at Tydees Hairdressing for Men and Women in Centre Court Arcade, said it was a shock to arrive at work to see the damage the fire had caused. “We haven’t been allowed into the shop to see if there is any damage,” Mr Treloar told the Gazette Tuesday morning. A crime scene was established and the investigation is ongoing. STORY PAGE 3

There are few people who can say they’ve lived to the ripe old age of 100 - but beloved Berwick local Beryl Exell is now one of them. It may not have been the big party her family had been planning, but the Cardinia Park Hotel was filled with warmth and happiness on Monday 2 August as Beryl, her four children and their partners all gathered to celebrate this remarkable milestone (and have a glass of rose or two!) A direct descendent of Ernst Wanke, one of the original settlers in the Harkaway area, Beryl has called the Berwick region home for her entire life and a global pandemic certainly wasn’t going to get in the way of her celebrating with those she loves. “I was born in the old bush nursing hospital in Berwick when it was just a house,” Beryl said, adding that it had “changed a bit now”. Gazette reporter Gabriella Payne caught up with Beryl and her family for this week’s People in Profile interview. STORY PAGE 10

Motorsport handbrake The world class motorsport complex slated for McGregor Road in Pakenham has hit a roadblock, with circuit developers Podium 1 pulling out of the project. Cardinia mayor Brett Owen confirmed last week that the development of The Cardinia Motor Recreation and Education Park would open to a tender process again shortly. The land still has the necessary planning permissions to build a FIM/FIA graded race track - capable of accommodating V8 Supercars and Formula 1 training. STORY PAGE 5

Local SES volunteers have had their reputations dragged through the mud by the United Firefighters Union (UFU) in what one local MP is calling an attempted take over. SES members who attended the fatal ac-

cident of Tess Clark and her unborn baby on Healesville-Kooweerup Road on 4 February 2021 have been hit with misconduct allegations by the union, which Gembrook MP and past Shadow Minister for Emergency Services called “woeful”.

“We knew the UFU eventually wanted to take over or remove SESs so they can have the road rescue part of it, because they’re more interested in their union numbers than anything else,” Mr Battin said. “If there is ever a time that we need people
