Warragul Ranges head south IN mid-May a group of 40 members from The Probus Club of Warragul Ranges had an overnight car trip to South Gippsland. On the first day the group was able to visit an extensive motor museum in Mirboo North, lunch and enjoy a stroll around Meeniyan before heading to Toora and a short walk to the Agnes Falls. Some of the group took a short detour to Port Welshpool to walk the newly restored 900m Long Jetty. It was a short drive then to Yarram for the overnight stay. Dinner was at the Yarram Country Club with a challenging trivia quiz. Next morning, armed with the colourful Heesco town information Sheet, everyone set off to find the wonderful murals painted on the town buildings. The trip concluded with a tour of the very interesting Port Albert Maritime Museum followed by the Port Albert famous fish and chips boxed lunch. Overall it was voted as being a very successful trip.

After visiting the Port Albert Maritime Museum our members were waiting for their famous fish and chips.

Honour in order for Shirley James Thomas MINYIP’S Shirley Smith joins a long list of selfless volunteers, committed to their community, recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours. Mrs Smith, now 81, became a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the Wimmera. The award recognises Mrs Smith’s efforts within the community over several decades which included reforming the Wimmera branch of the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices to her active involvement in historical, educational, religious and rural women’s organisations. Mrs Smith, humbled by the award, said the honours came as a complete surprise. “I got a tremendous shock,” she said. “I have no idea (who nominated me). I think there might be a few people who know but they’re not going to tell me.” Mrs Smith has been a lifelong resident of Minyip, attending Minyip Primary School and Warracknabeal High School before transferring to Concordia College in Adelaide. However, she had a brief stint as an air hostess with Trans Australian Airlines, which would later go on to become Qantas, during the early 1960s. “It was interesting and I always wanted to do it so I was given the opportunity and it was great,” she said. “You flew over a lot of Australia but I only saw it from the air. You’d land at the

airport, go straight to the hotel you’d stay at overnight and then you’d wait at the staff lounge for the airplane to be refueled and restocked before you were off again. “Then I came back and got a job at Smith Bros Engineers and married my boss, Frank Smith.” Since her return, Mrs Smith has been active within the community becoming a member and now president of the Probus Club of Minyip Combined. She also joined her late husband at the Lions Club of Minyip as a Lady Lion where she helped the production of the Lions Bulletin for more than 25 years. Mrs Smith said the community news bulletin helped to fill the space left by the closure of the Minyip Guardian and Dunmunkle Standard newspapers. Mrs Smith also has a keen interest in

maintaining the town’s historical records. She was a founding member of the Minyip and District Historical Society in 1988, which occupies the Minyip Guardian office, and has been president, vice-president, assistant secretary and currently serves as secretary. At the moment, she has been busy, along with other members of the historical society, collating historical records which will go towards Minyip’s next historical book, recapping the town’s 150 years since settlement. Mrs Smith also donated land for a community park next to Emma’s Cafe in 1976 which is now called Smith Park. However, Mrs Smith said her involvement in restoring the Wimmera branch of Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices had been one of her

proudest moments. She has been a Justice of the Peace since 1994, also serving as president and secretary/treasurer of the branch. Mrs Smith is a trustee at Minyip preschool and has held the roles of treasurer, vice-president and piano accompanist, deploying her musical talents for various concerts including for Australia Day events and Carols by Candlelight. “I grew up in a very musical family so I grew to love music,” she said. She has also played alongside her nephew and his wife for modern services at Minyip’s St John’s Lutheran Church where she has been a Parish Council chairman and member, secretary, and treasurer. She is currently a member of the Ladies Guild. Mrs Smith was very involved in the steering committee that saw the Minyip and Warracknabeal parishes join.Mrs Smith is a former treasurer of the Country Women’s Association Wimmera Area Group and Dunmunkle branch, where she was also a member. She also has been a member and advocate of the Philosophical Society since 2016 and has been recognised previously for her contributions when named as Minyip Citizen of the Year by Yarriambiack Shire in 2013. Aside from her volunteering contributions, Mrs Smith has been a carer and assistant supervisor at Dunmunkle Lodge Aged Care Facility between the 1980s and 2000s as well as a secretary for Smith Bros Engineers. This year’s list of Order of Australia recipients has recognised the highest ever percentage of women at 44 percent.

president’s message

Back into lockdown... stay home and stay safe The President Anne Vick WELL here we go again, lock down number six. We at Croydon Park Probus Club were able to hold our Christmas in July luncheon with 86 members attending before the previous announcement of a

lockdown that night. I hope other clubs were able to participate in similar activities. At the moment any event is a good event when we don’t know what is happening from day to day. It looks like we will be holding meetings via Zoom this month. For clubs willing to organise these to keep members in touch, PAV was hoping to hold our delegates meeting on the Monday 23 August but with new

restrictions this may not go ahead. Memos will come out regarding this closer to the day from our secretary Jane Johnson. It was very disappointing that we had to cancel our Friendship Day at Pakenham Races. We will all look forward to attending in 2022 bigger and better. Hopefully all the avid golfers will still enjoy the golf day in October where I believe quite a lot of members from various clubs have their names down to

play in this tournament. In closing hopefully most members have had one or two jabs in the arm or considering it, to keep us safe and from heading into isolation all the time. Stay safe, stay at home. Consider others, until next time yours in friendship. Anne Vick, PAV President.

A group from our club recently had what they described as a fabulous time in Bright! The weather was good - although commencing the Thursday ride in fog was a bit disconcerting. Crisp, cold mornings turned into sunny days. There were organised activities as well as the freedom to “do your own thing” which allowed getting to know people better during coffee breaks and happy hours. Great company, great weather, great food and great scenery. The autumn leaves were beautiful and the colours glorious. What more could you ask from a few days away with friends? The new Big 4 social facilities

provided a comfortable environment for all the social activities. The activities included picturesque drives through avenues of late autumn leaves, happy hours and group dinners and walks along the Ovens River - especially to the brewery. The group also made time for taking in the spectacular views from Mt Buffalo and meeting the animals at the Red Stag Farm. Thanks go to the club’s WHACO (Wantirna Heights Actively Cycling Oldies) Group for organising an enjoyable few days in beautiful Bright at its autumn best.

Our wonderful trip to Bright Beverley Hargreaves Activity Officer ON a brisk Monday morning, 38 members and friends of the Noble Park Combined Probus Club gathered at Club Noble to travel by coach to our much anticipated five day stay at the “Bright Chalet” hosted by the O’Sullivan family. As we had been there before, we knew we were in for a great time. Upon our arrival and having been allocated our rooms, we made our way to the comfortable lounge room where a fire awaited us. When the bar opened and having purchased our drinks, we made our way back to the lounge to relax in front of the fire and await the time for dinner. This was a regular time looked forward to each evening. It was a time to discuss the day’s outings and chatter amongst ourselves. After a scrumptious dinner some made their way back to their rooms to watch TV, gathered in the lounge room to talk etc. and others played Tri-Ominos, a game I’d not heard of before, but interesting to master nonetheless. This added to the fun of ending another perfect day sightseeing and learning about our beautiful country such as Bright and surrounds. We had a great time for which we thank the O’Sullivan family and staff and look forward yet again to another stay at the Bright Chalet in the future.

Silver Jubilee takes the cake FIFTY-THREE members and three guests gathered at the Watsonia RSL in May 2021 to celebrate the 25th birthday of the Kingsbury Probus Club. We might have been seven months late because of Covid-19 but we had a whale of a time. Everyone was greeted at the door and shown to their seats without too much hassle. The fun began with entertainment by Paul Hogan (no, not the one you are thinking of), a singer who had us up dancing and singing to songs from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Yes. we can still remember the wonderful times we had back then. The food was excellent, two courses. followed by a huge cake. The tables were beautifully decorated by some of our more artistic members and soon the party began. A big thank-you to all committee members involved in the arrangements. Our guests included The Hon. Ged Kearney who presented Foundation brooches to seven of our founding members and Robert Renshaw from Rotary. Our president Faye Eldridge called members who had been with the club for 10 or 20 years to come forward to be presented with a pin in commemoration. In between speeches, presentations and entertainment we had raffle draws with many prizes won. The day was enjoyed by all and one to be remembered. We thank the Watsonia RSL for the wonderful venue and excellent food and we look forward to the next 25 years.

Diacos Garden Nursery visit impresses club of indoor and outdoor plants, pots and ornaments. Many purchases were made and wheeled out to car boots ready to take place on our patios and gardens. Afternoon tea in the Apple Espresso Cafe was most welcome and thoroughly enjoyed over much chatter. It was lovely to be able to get out together again after a long break due to the Covid restrictions.

GARDEN group members of the Ladies Probus Club Of Rye enjoyed an outing to Diacos Garden Nursery in Mornington. Caitlin from the nursery gave us a brief insight into Diacos and an interesting garden talk and some valuable and practical advice for our gardening needs. We wandered around the nursery and looked at their impressive range Spike in his warm Tesla-home.

Versatile Mike TESLA-OWNING Mike “Spike” Sparkes, a member of one-year-old Melbourne Bearbrass Probus, got badly caught by the electricity blackout at Port Welshpool in South Gippsland. But the retired bus driver found an amazing solution. He lives alternately between his Docklands apartment and renovating his Port Welshpool cottage. The storms and power blackout caught him at his cottage – no heating, no lights, no TV, icecream in freezer puddling. It was no fun in the dark overnight and next day he couldn’t even get a hot coffee driving to nearby Toora and Foster, both blacked out too. Back to his gloomy cottage and with light fading, Spike had his inspiration. His Tesla has a “Camping Mode”. It turns off

all power except the lights, air-heating and seat warming, and turns the stationary Tesla into a warm cabin, with a synthetic hearth-fire burning on the computer screen. That could be his new home on wheels until power came back, he reasoned. He settled in to read a detective book as night fell. Two hours later he looked up and his cottage was a palace of light and the fridge was whirring. He did a computer check of his Tesla tiny-home. His two-hour camping had only cut his range by 10km so he wasn’t going to stall with a flat battery coming home. The picture appears to have been snapped by a passer-by. Full story – see bearbrassprobus.org.

ON one of the first coach tours in the region and the first tour this year for the Dingley Central Probus Club, members toured the magnificent scenery around Bright, with local tour guides giving an insight into the history and country life. They had the opportunity to experience the welcoming hospitality of the locals and to taste their local produce. For example, they tried a variety of handmade cow and goat milk cheeses from the Milawa Cheese Company. The Probians took time to learn about the 1850s gold rush history at museums around Bright. From Bright they continued their coach tour over Mt Hotham, to Omeo and onto Lakes Entrance. There they embraced the seaside charm and visited many heritage towns around the Gippsland Lakes. Although they didn’t come home with gold nuggets, they found that many locals had hearts of gold.

Staying home spreads joy STAYING home during lockdown doesn’t need to be boring and the Probus Club of Dingley Central helped to stimulate the minds of all members by inviting them to knit squares. These colourful squares were later joined to make blankets for charity. Twenty-two members and friends managed to create 20 rugs that will be passed onto charities with the Salvos, St Kilda Mums, and KOGO (Knit One Give One) being the first to receive them. These donations send a message of hope that someone cares about their daily challenges. One of the surprising outcomes was some unexpected bags of knitted squares that came from a retirement village nearby. An anonymous knitter from the village, who has since passed away, departed in the knowledge that her legacy lives on. The craft group co-ordinator, Ann Kilby said, “I guess that the essence is that when you take on a project it often has more far reaching impact than you imagine”.

Club’s north east tour By Rick Goss What a fabulous tour this was … Firstly the weather was sublime, a bit chilly in the morning but clear sunny skies every day. Yours truly wore shorts almost every day and that doesn’t happen very often in late April. We started off on Sunday morning and everybody was at their appointed pick up points well before time (well done). We drove up through the Yarra Valley stopping at Yea for a refreshing cuppa before proceeding to the King Valley for a wine tasting at Pizzini’s. From there it was on to our accommodation at the Gateway Inn at Wangaratta. Next morning there was a paramedic ambulance in the car park. Hope it wasn’t any of our group who has had a bad turn in the night we thought? But no, there was a paramedic training course on in the hotel (sighs of relief all round). After a drive around Wangaratta to see the sites, we were off to the town of Chiltern where we had a very informative tour of Dow’s chemist which ran in the town from 1929 until 1968 when owner Hilda Dow retired. The shop was left exactly the same as when it closed, shelves full of long forgotten laxatives and hair tonics. Of particular interest to the many mums on our tour was a ‘Birthing Chair’, I saw several shudders when thinking of the pain and suffering its users most probably had to endure. The afternoon saw us cross the border

Paradise Queen for a cruise on the lake that included lunch. It was now Wednesday, so we took the short drive down to Glenrowan to visit the Kelly Museum and have our picture taken beside the ‘Big Ned’ statue in the main street, then on to Beechworth for a town walk that included lunch at the original Beechworth Bakery and a trip to Beechworth Bees to check out the honey. In the afternoon we went on to Milawa for a cheese tasting and another fabulous wine tasting at Brown Brothers conducted by Kate who was a real entertainer and also sings in a band. Thursday saw us off to Mt Beauty with a stop-off morning tea at the Red Stag Deer

into NSW to visit Corowa Whiskey and Chocolates, (trusting Gladys wouldn’t close the border on us of course). We were rather bemused when we asked how much whiskey was in the chocolates, only to be told ‘none’. The site has two shops, one sells chocolate, the other whiskey. Is that misleading or what? Then on to Chambers Winery in Rutherglen for another tasting. We were all in a very happy state by this time and there were a few nodding heads as we drove along. On Tuesday we were off to the Byramine Homestead and Brewery, (yes more tastings, cider this time), which was followed by a mid-morning cuppa beside Lake Mulwala before we boarded the

Farm. We were served enormous scones topped off with jam and cream with our tea. The scones were so big they were almost a meal in themselves. I don’t think there were many takers for lunch when we arrived at Mt Beauty. So Friday was our last day, and we were ready for an early (8:30am), checkout and we were off to see four silos in the local towns of Devenish, St James, Goorambat and Tungamah, before a lunch stop in Benalla and time for look round the Kelly Museum and Art Gallery before our late afternoon return home. Thanks to Tony and Deb for a fantastic tour, one of the best we have done to date.

Looking forward to new life THE Probus Club of Mount Waverley was formed in 1993, and from its inception has been a club where the members have been men. In thinking about the future of the club, and how to rebuild falling membership numbers, the cub committee formed the view that it was an appropriate time to reflect the nature of contemporary society and become a club having both women and men as members. In coming to this decision, the committee was acutely conscious of the rich, rewarding and exciting 28 years in which the club had been a men’s club. It was extremely grateful for the contribution made by those many men who had been creating fun, friendship and fellowship among club members for all of these years. But it was time for change! One of the features of the club’s activities since inception is that the wives and partners of members had been actively involved in the outings and social programs of the cub. And the club had always embraced the widows of former members and encouraged them to continue to have an active involvement in the outings and social programs. The proposal to become a club having both women and men as members was presented to the club’s annual general meeting in March 2021. It was the unanimous decision of the meeting that the committee recommendation be accepted. No constitution changes were required as the existing document provided for the club membership to be open to both genders. The next task for the committee was to welcome all those who wished to join the club and be a part

The Probus Club of Mount Waverley is looking forward with much joy and enthusiasm to the exciting new life which now lays ahead. of its new life. It could be said that the floodgates then opened! At the club’s May meeting 26 new members, 24 women and 2 men, were inducted as members of the club. The Mayor of the City of Monash participated in the meeting and presented each of the new members with their membership packs.

Then, at the June meeting, a further 12 new members were inducted and the membership packs were presented by a councillor of the City of Monash, who had made a return visit to the cub to be a part of this special occasion. And the influx of new members continues, with more new members to be inducted at the July and later meetings.

RINGWOOD Clocktower Probus Club had the pleasure of conferring life membership on Colin Pask for outstanding service to the club. The inaugural life member Anne Outerbridge made the presentation of the award. Col is a driving force in the club, holding positions of president, vice president, membership secretary and was delegate to MPIG for three years. Apart from these positions he fulfilled convenor roles for the caravan cabin trips, men’s cooking group and a member of the calendar committee among other things. Col’s term as president coincided with the clubs 10th birthday for which he produced 110 copies of a DVD featuring the highlights of activities since the

club’s inception in 2007. Appreciation of and expertise in technology led Col to design the club’s website and he continues to maintain and update it in his role of webmaster. He is willing to help solve audio-visual problems that may arise during general meetings as well as helping members with their computer difficulties. When Covid-19 shut down normal meetings, Col assisted those members who were having trouble with Zoom and was “mission control” for a number of activities. All in all, Col is the embodiment of the Probus ethos - involvement in club activities, happy to help others if needed and developing a sense of Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. A well deserved honour.

Club rocks murder-mystery BULLEEN Heights organised a sea going murder mystery written by one of their members and was attended by 42 fellow passengers who eagerly participated. It was throughly enjoyed by all. Guests included celebrities like Donald Trump, an ageing rock and roll star, a funeral director, a crazy cat lady, a tattooed bikie giving away drugs (Smarties), a young widower looking for a rich old husband and even a Collingwood supporter! The murder turned out to be the dirty old man who threw the sexy Fifi Star overboard because she ignored him. A good time was had by all with plenty of fun and laughter which was very much needed at this time.

Why respite is important BEING a carer can be rewarding yet demanding, but with support, the job can be made easier. That’s why respite care is so important. What is respite care? Respite care can provide a carer a muchneeded break. It can also provide social opportunities for the person you’re caring for. Respite care can take place in your own home or at a day centre. Whether it’s long or short term, for a few hours or an extended period, respite care can help prevent carers from becoming exhausted, isolated, or burnt out. What respite services does Fernlea offer? Centre-based day respite Fernlea has two day respite centres in Emerald and in Pakenham. Day respite outside the home is ideal for people looking to socialise with others in a small group where your loved one can enjoy chef-prepared food, participate in the activities, be pampered, and benefit from one-on-one care provided by qualified staff

·

and trained volunteers. Day respite can be a great transition before moving into an aged care facility or requiring permanent in-home care services. Respite services at home In-home care is a good option when someone is too unwell to attend centrebased day respite or needs longer hours of care. Fernlea can provide a range of nursing or personal care services including showering, feeding, dispensing medications and socialisation. Where do I start? Have a look at our website fernlea.com.au to find out more about the services we can provide. We keep our fees as affordable as possible, and don’t have lock-in contracts. We provide services for people who have a government funding package (home care or NDIS) and those who don’t. Call us on 5968 6639, and we will work with you to plan the services that best meet your needs.

A holiday lifestyle all year JACK Price and partner Judith Powell were already both local to the Bellarine Peninsula area when they heard about a new retirement community called The Breeze Point Lonsdale. “Staff from The Breeze did a presentation at our Combined Probus Club of Queenscliffe, and it sparked our interest,” recalled Jack. “We were both already thinking about downsizing and the idea of brand-new modern homes appealed to us.” A couple of their friends from Probus ended up moving to The Breeze and when Jack and Judith visited them, they were blown away. “We both put our homes on the market straight away!” exclaimed Judith. It was the waterways surrounding the community that really sold them on the place. “The waterways make it very special and all the paths around them are flat for easy walking,” Jack said. Judith moved into a two-bedroom, twobathroom villa, while Jack opted for an equally spacious apartment right above the community’s club-style Waterside Pavilion. “It’s like living on a cruise ship with all the things to do here,” said Jack who frequents the Waterside Pavilion’s state of the art gymnasium and indoor heated pool. “I love the atmosphere,” said Judith.

“It’s lovely to read the newspaper and sip on a coffee in the lounge area and meet up with other residents at the sports bar during happy hour.” In this “extended living area” they can chat for hours with other likeminded residents. “We also get on so well with the staff,” said Jack, giving a special mention to the community’s very helpful and friendly onsite concierge and management team. Jack is part of the theatre group at The

Breeze which hosts weekly film nights for residents in the community’s exclusive 50seat tiered movie theatre. “People also get involved in yoga, water aerobics, Scrabble group, book club, craft group, kayaking, bike riding and lawn bowls,” Judith’s list goes on. “But there’s no pressure to get involved in anything if you don’t want to, it’s totally up to you.” “Oh yes!” they both exclaimed when asked if they are happy with their decision

to move to The Breeze. “It’s the best move we’ve made at this stage of our lives,” said Jack. “We’re both very happy! And everyone here seems to be that way. There are a lot of happy smiling faces here.” The Breeze Point Lonsdale’s display villas and Waterside Pavilion are open for private inspections Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. Hear for the long haul JULY marked a major milestone for Geelong Hearing Aid Services when it celebrated 40 years of helping Geelong residents with hearing loss. Audiologist Ashlee Willis and her team are excited to mark the date, knowing they are a part of the history of a long-running business that maintains a firm belief that everyone deserves access to support and advice from hearing professionals. “To celebrate our 40th birthday, we are offering great deals for the whole year while we celebrate! Come in and meet the team to see how we can help you,” Ashlee says. In the beginningIan Young founded the company as Qualtone Acoustics in 1969, launching as an independent hearing provider in Mitcham. Twelve years later, Ian established Geelong Hearing Aid Services, continuing the journey by assisting the community of greater

Geelong with empathy and a passion for hearing awareness and rehabilitation. In 2005, the company moved to its current location in Belmont and, since 2011, has been visiting Leopold to provide quality hearing care. And, as Ashlee says, “The passion for hearing awareness and rehabilitation has never dimmed.” Celebrating independence “The most important aspect of Geelong Hearing Aid Services is that we have been - and always will be - an independent company. “It means that the service we provide and hearing aid brands we carry are not attached to corporate obligation. We can offer our clients a wider range of hearing aids and more choice in their journey. For further information contact Geelong Hearing Aid Services, 5243 1019.

Group photo at the Lake Mulwala Cruise.

Great sightseeing and fun COMMENTS courtesy John Shrives and Ray Binks. Photographs courtesy David Cotton, Ray Binks, Barbara Shrives and Robin Bray It was a bright sunny morning as the 41 Wheelers Hill Combined Club members left for our Bright tour. We had five days of great sightseeing and lots of fun, friendship and fellowship. We stayed at the Bright Chalet to enjoy all the magnificent autumn trees the north-east of Victoria offers, as well as the many tourist attractions in the area. We spent a sunny morning in Bright before a tour of the surrounding towns and the scenery the Alpine Valley . Another sunny day was most welcomed for our visit to Yarrawonga, with a trip on the paddle steamer on Lake Mulwala, including skipper’s barbecue. A stop at the Warrabilla winery on the way home was a bonus for many. On a wet and windy day, we had a tour of the Red Stag Deer and Emu Farm

and the Australian Pumpkin Seed Company, both were most entertaining, with the chocolate-coated pumpkin seeds a big hit. Our arrival in Beechworth was met with rain and thunderstorms, so the local shops provided some relief from the rain. Our bus driver’s knowledge of both Beechworth and Yackandandah gave us a real history lesson as well as seeing some of the finest parts of the towns. The Bright Chalet was a wonderful destination with the rooms, restaurant and bar area very accommodating and the open fire just perfect for our evening get-togethers. The quality and range of food on offer satisfied everyone. Our card group were able to set up after dinner each night and they even attracted a new member who won one evening. It was a busy five days, incorporating a couple of long bus trips, but the friendships and memories will last forever.

Hello from Knoxfield Ladies LEONIE Taylor, Advertising Officer, Knoxfield Ladies Probus Club It’s been an upsetting year for all Probians and most everybody else as we have had to steer a course through changes and lockdowns. Hopefully with vaccination numbers on the rise, we will all be in a better position going forward. Sadly our Club, as many other Clubs, have had to cancel some days out planned as well as monthly meetings, but we are always looking forward to good days ahead after lockdown. Our “Christmas in July” was held on 14 July and everyone agreed it was a very successful day and, as luck would have it, we had booked and managed to have it prelockdown 5.0. Luncheon was held at The Mulgrave Country Club and we had full attendance of 30 members which was our number limit. The festive meal was enjoyable with all the Christmas trimmings, but best of all in my mind was the plum pudding with custard, and better still with whipped cream……so delightful !! Col Perkins provided the entertainment and kept us all singing along and a bit of dancing for those who wanted to dance off that Christmas pudding. There were lucky number draws and Santa arrived to add to the fun. He danced with the ladies and was so funny as his big tummy kept slipping down, but he danced on. ignoring the laughter from us all. Our committee is talking about future events to celebrate Probus Day on 1

Denise Gwen and Joan enjoying the entertainment.

The dance floor had lots of activity.

October, and as the past year and a half has been difficult we are going to highlight to our members and community how important it is to stay connected and encourage friends and neighbours to join a local Probus Club. Keep safe everyone and let’s look ahead to more Probus fun, friendship and adventure.

Clubs unite for travel tour PROBUS Club travellers from Croydon Park, Ringwood Clocktower, Lilydale and Kerrimuir Probus Clubs enjoyed a trade travel tour, staying at the Yeppoon Salt Apartments, which were beautifully presented and well placed on the seafront. We enjoyed delicious food, beginning

each day with yummy breakfasts at Vue Restaurant. The day tours were of great interest giving us so many new experiences to enjoy. Stand outs were the Henderson Park

Farm Retreat where we ate the most delicious damper with jam and cream, Koorana Crocodile Farm, Water Park Farm and Creek, Ferns Hideway Resort, and Paddock to Plate with a cooking demonstration in the evening. We spent time wandering around the

lovely botanical gardens and zoo. A stand out was the last night at the Footlights Theatre, an unforgettable night of fun! An absolute hoot! We all ached from laughing. Such a great show and one of the funniest we had seen in years.

news Emerald’s Sibel Kruithof has been busy during Covid-19 lockdowns photographing curious looking fungi. She rediscovered her childhood interest in mushrooms last year and has since become fully immersed in the fungi world and their unique properties. SHELBY BROOKS caught up with Sibel to learn more.

Everything fascinates and captivated me, from the visual aspect to the medicinal properties they provide to the practical and environmental solutions they offer.” “I started growing different varieties, I’m still in the hobby stage at the moment but we are looking for a suitable place to actually extend it to a little mushroom farm business, Mycelium Wisdom, where we can hopefully provide mushrooms to different shops and restaurants. “At the moment, I am still growing from a grow tent from one of my spare rooms.”

enjoys, though she warns a lot of time is spent learning about mushrooms before going. “You have to be very careful when you go foraging. A lot of mushrooms might not kill you but make you really sick,” she said. “You really have to do your research and study to know the ones you can pick. “There’s only really one mushroom here in Australia that is really poisonous, the night cap one that gets confused with the store-bought field mushrooms “If you’re not 100 per cent certain, leave it, don’t eat it.” Sibel said there are techniques to ascertain if a mushroom is safe to eat or not. “When you cut a mushroom, it will stain a certain way, like a yellow stain usually means no good,” she said.

Sibel grows gourmet mushrooms for eating, as well as some medicinal ones. “The medicinal ones usually aren’t that nice tasting,” she said. “Reishi mushrooms are highly prized mushrooms in Chinese medicine now western medicine use a lot of those properties which are immune boosting and anti-inflammatory.” In terms of gourmet mushrooms, Sibel grows oyster mushrooms which are easy and come in multiple varieties. “If I can grow with the season, I don’t have to cool or heat the fruiting room,” she explained. “It’s easier to utilise the actual temperature so I’ll grow King oyster mushrooms, lion’s mane and shiitake in cooler times and when it’s warmer, it’s better for reishi, pink and golden oyster.” Foraging is still something that Sibel is

BORN and raised in Germany, Sibel was immersed in foraging practices from a young age. “Mushrooms have been a big part of my life from the beginning,” she said. “My mum grew up in the post-war area and she had to go to the forests before school and pick mushrooms to then deliver to customers to make money to pay for groceries for her family. “When I grew up, my mum would strap me on her back and we’d go into the forest and pick mushrooms.” But since moving to Australia when she was 24 and raising a family in Emerald, Sibel said she hadn’t found time to explore her passion for mushrooms until the first lockdown last year. “It got a little bit forgotten until we went into the first lockdown in Victoria and I had a little bit of fine to go to certain areas I hadn’t been,” Sibel said. “I saw all these mushrooms that I remembered from the time when I was a kid so we started collecting them and I got more and more into finding out more about them. “After years of creating as an artist becoming quite popular with my business Precious Grain I now feel the time has come to expand again and mushrooms have become my biggest passion in life by far. “Everything fascinates and captivated me, from the visual aspect to the medicinal properties they provide to the practical and environmental solutions they offer.“ She said a lot of the mushrooms in Europe and Australia are the same. “There’s a lot of pine forests in Europe and a lot of monoculture and plenty of mushrooms around, the same species that we find here,” Sibel said. “In Germany, you have mushrooms like saffron milk caps and parasols- a lot of same mushrooms as you can find here. “Some of them have been brought over with plants, because a lot of mushrooms are mycorrhizal they live together in symbiosis so they were imported to the area or came with immigrants.” Sibel went on to complete a mushroom cultivation course and is now growing a range of gourmet mushrooms out of her home. “It kind of completely took over my life from then on,” Sibel said.

“Some mushrooms look like a field mushroom but stains yellow and that one will give you sore stomach.” Sibel said heating a little piece of mushroom can also help identify if they are safe to eat. “You can also tell from the smell. Heat exposure usually brings out a certain smell like a phenolic, ink smell which means they are no good.” Sibel has combined her love of photography with her newfound passion for mushrooms by documenting mushrooms she finds and grows. “Photography has always been a really big part of my life,” Sibel said. “With mushrooms it’s so much to do with the attention to detail, the magnification of certain aspects of fungi. “The whole thing has taken me completely in. I love zooming into a mushroom or seeing certain parts and putting it into the foreground and into the

spotlight, I just love doing it.” But it did take a little while for Sibel’s three kids to come around to the idea of consuming so many mushrooms. “My kids don’t like mushrooms that much, but mine are pretty willing to eat them now,” she said. “I have put quite a bit of time into finding out recipes to put into meat dishes. “Some mushrooms that taste almost like the real deal, like king oyster mushrooms are excellent to use as a meat dish.” Sibel replaces pulled pork with pulled mushroom to make a burger that tastes like the real thing or enchiladas are also a popular mushroom dish in her household. “There were complaints at the beginning but they’re pretty used to it now,” she said, laughing. But Sibel believes mushrooms can have even greater environmental benefits than

just as a meat replacement. “Mushrooms are really one of only the lifeforms that could really save this planet,” Sibel said. “Oyster mushrooms in particular can decompose a nappy in two months instead of it being in landfill for years. Mycelium from the mushrooms eat plastic. Earlier this year it was announced that the Federal Government would invest $15 million in grants to support Australian-led research into the use of magic mushrooms and other psychedelics into their use in treating mental illnesses. Ikea also switched out Styrofoam packaging for mycelian based biodegradable packaging. “People looking at mushrooms more and more,” Sibel said. “Mushrooms don’t just taste good but have all these other amazing abilities.”

Textiles are blooming By Mikayla Van Loon THESE days, everlasting flowers and posy arrangements are just a part of home decor. Fake flowers don’t always cut it when wanting to make something look elegant. So what if there was another option? Jennie-Maree Tempest, 53, has always had a love for sewing and textiles but she never thought her artworks would take the form of three-dimensional sculptures. Now mostly retired and focusing on her art and her 15 acre property, Ms Tempest has discovered a love for succulents and native flowers. “One day recently, I was walking the dogs and I was out the front chatting to one of my neighbours and I was looking at one of her succulents and I kept thinking, I can see that in textiles and I wouldn’t mind having a go at it,” Ms Tempest said. “Once I made the first one, suddenly my eyes opened up and I thought ‘I can see flowers everywhere that I want to make.’” Ms Tempest takes her inspiration from flowers in her own garden or picking a small stem from somewhere else and placing it in a jar of water before really inspecting all parts of the flower. “I think probably what I try to do is, because flowers have such a short life, being able to make them into textiles, it also means you get to enjoy them all the time and you get to appreciate what they look like in the height of their beauty.” Textiles also allow a sensory experience, with different fabrics creating different feelings of touch and look. “I love the flexibility that comes with textiles, I can manipulate the fabric to form whatever shape comes to mind, which gives me the ability to construct beautiful botanical textile art sculptures that are very high in detail,” Ms Tempest said. Each artwork can take anywhere between 20 hours to 100 hours depending on the complexity of the flowers and the detail that needs to be carefully woven, sewn or positioned. For Ms Tempest, no two artworks are put together the same and each one takes on a different process and materials. “I use a wide variety of techniques, it just depends, sometimes I look at it and think ‘I can make it this way or that way,’ sometimes there is a bit of planning and thought process but it’s been a bit of experimenting along the way,” Ms Tempest said.

Flaming Katy plant sculpture on found log of wood. Most of the time Ms Tempest works with felt, cotton, velvet, wire and thread, although sometimes lace is also used. She also likes to use patterned fabrics to create leaves, bringing an unrealistic realism to her works. The base of each artwork is made from found timber logs that Ms Tempest cuts, cleans and sands ready for use. Ms Tempest said it has certainly been a learning experience but that is what makes it fun. “As a creative person, you do want to challenge yourself and I think nowadays where I challenge myself more is being more elaborate with everything I make,” she said. As she keeps experimenting and finding new ways to create her artworks, Ms Tempest said the process is becoming more organic and more natural. “My work doesn’t seek to make perfect replicas, but rather capture the fleeting soul of the life I see before me. Sometimes that includes imperfections or even elements of decay,” she said. You can find her at Jemartem on Instagram, Facebook and her website to check out all of her pieces.

Pork on ya fork! ANY fresh, raw pork sold in Australia is proudly 100 per cent Australian pork. However according to Australian Pork Limited, the majority of the ham and bacon sold in Australian supermarkets is made from imported pork. Any pork imported into Australia must be cooked to government-defined, high

temperatures for set periods of time, prior to being sold. This protects our pig herd from diseases we don’t have in Australia. Once the heating process has taken place, this imported pork is only allowed to be used in processed pork products. Most Australians have no idea about

Creek wetlands run wild DANDENONG Wetlands were full to the brim with the bounty of recent rains. Photographer GARY SISSONS captured the scenes of a swelling Dandenong Creek and surrounding wetlands near Heatherton and Stud roads. The natural wonders are one of Greater Dandenong’s many alluring option for Covidlockdown walks. But the images are also a timely reminder for families, especially with young children, to stay well away from the dangerously fast-flowing creek.

Macrame makes a move MACRAME has come in and out of fashion since it first became popular in the thirteenth century but it was really at its height during the ‘70s. The resurgence of macrame usually gets one of two responses - ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’. But with either response, there’s no denying the talent that goes into making many of the pieces that form the bohemian aesthetic. Although once a practical technique for sailors, macrame has developed into a retro bohemian decor style in modern design. Now macrame takes shape in extravagant wall hangings and plant hangers, becoming a key component in interior design, particularly when paired with indoor plants, neutral colours and earthy design features. It has even expanded into coasters, keyrings, dog leads and baby teething toys for those who like the trend but can’t see it as a design feature. During the early months of lockdown in 2020, Google Trends recorded some of the highest searches of macrame in Australia over the last 18 months. April, May and June last year saw on

average a 40 point increase in people searching for macrame related ideas. Whether doing it yourself or investing in one of the many macrame artists to design and create a beautiful knotted and woven art piece to spice up any space, it’s a trend that isn’t going anywhere. It brings warmth and texture to walls, fills blank spaces and looks incredibly intricate. For those DIY-ers out there, here are a few handy tips for doing it yourself. First get to know the equipment you need, like any type of twine, cord or rope, scissors and a stabiliser which you can use to tie your rope to. Learn important macrame terms: working cord - the cord used to make knots, filler cord - cord that the knots wrap around and sennit - a knot or knots that are repeated. Start off easy with a lark’s head knot or a reverse lark’s head knot, then try something like a square knot and half knot. For something a little bit more challenging, try a spiral stitch or a clove hitch. You’ll be a macrame master before too long.

Money, Money, Money! MONEY is a five-year-old French bulldog, who was surrendered to Lort Smith Animal Hospital in September when his previous carers moved overseas. With itchy skin, inflamed ears and some spinal issues, our shelter vets knew that Money had a long course of treatment ahead of him. One of Lort Smith’s leading vets, Dr Anthony diagnosed Money with generalised atopic skin disease, a skin condition caused by allergies, which in turn lead to an infection in both ears called otitis externa. This caused so much swelling and discomfort for Money that he needed two weeks of anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medication before Dr Anthony could even see into his ears. “Money wasn’t in great shape when I first saw him. He must have been hurting - his ears were so sore and inflamed and he wasn’t happy when I tried to examine him,” Dr Anthony recalls. Money was prescribed steroids and while they worked their magic, he was bathed with a medicated shampoo to help his skin. He also started a special diet, Hill’s Prescription Diet z/d for Skin/ Food Sensitivities, which was specially formulated to support dogs with skin and food sensitivities. When Money came back a few weeks later, Dr Anthony found his skin was slightly better, but his ear canals were still swollen and sore. Suspecting damage from chronic infections, he decided Money needed his ears examined while under general anaesthetic, and a CT scan of his head, both of which would help the assess the extent of the damage to the ear canals. Dr Anthony found Money had extensive

ear damage, and would need treatment straight away. He trialled Money on an antibiotic and steroid solution, made inhouse at Lort Smith. Dr Anthony wasn’t sure if it would be enough to avoid a complex surgery, but within a few weeks, Money’s ears were looking much healthier, and the infection was clearing. Money was lucky to have an amazing foster carer, Emily, support him through all of his surgeries and recovery. The bond Emily formed with Money was so special she couldn’t bear the thought of letting him go. When he was ready for adoption, Emily was the obvious choice. “Money’s condition is ongoing, and he will need special ongoing care for his ears and skin - but Emily’s great, and she can do it all from home,” explains Dr Anthony. “He’s in great hands.” Money is now feeling a million bucks thanks to the combined efforts of Lort Smith staff and volunteers, and our generous donors. Keeping plants alive WHEN winter rocks around we can sometimes forget that our indoor plants may need different care than they did in summer. One of the most common problems with indoor plants is over-watering, especially in the cooler months. Another issue in winter is that plants, both indoors and outdoors, tend to need less fertiliser and nutrients because they grow more slowly during a period of rest. If you have suspicions that a plant has been over-watered, remove it from the pot and start by taking away the wet, smelly soil and rotting roots. Re-pot the plant in dry soil and prune any yellow leaves. Finding sunlight can be a challenge in winter but indoor plants thrive when they get that little bit of afternoon sun. It’s important to look at the sunlight requirements of each individual plant because they all differ. And remember plants love warmth in winter but extremes can also cause an unhappy plant, so it’s best not to leave your plant near any cold draughts or on top of a heater vent. So what are some of the best plants for winter you ask? Well here’s a bit of a list. First off, aloe vera thrives in light throughout the year, so if it gets enough it will flower nicely in winter. They do need good drainage soil and bright light where possible. The second is a never fail plant, perfect for beginners and it goes by the name of a snake plant. It loves any condition, heaps of sunlight or partial

important dates to remember AUGUST 2021 EDITION Club News supplied by Friday, July 23rd Indoor plants need less water in winter and love a little warmth. Picture: UNSPLASH shade and very rarely needs repotting. Third on the list is of course cacti of any species because they hold water and nutrients, so they can be watered spasmodically and are the perfect winter companion. Not only does the next plant look good, it is easy to care for. A fiddle-leaf fig enjoys temperatures of 18 to 25 degrees and can cope with bright to medium light exposure. You can also let the soil nearly dry out before watering again. And for something a little bit bigger in size, try a rubber tree and no that doesn’t mean fake. Rubber trees grow into a two and a half metre tree and make the perfect foliage. The soil needs to dry out before watering again and they can’t get enough of room temperatures that sit between 15 to 26 degrees. Hopefully these tips and tricks will help keep your plants alive this winter or might inspire you to invest in some greenery this year.
