Sikh temple land beef A Sikh temple on Healesville-Kooweerup Road will not be able to operate as a restricted place of assembly after a neighbouring abattoir took Cardinia Shire Council to VCAT. In her report, VCAT presiding member Jane Tait said G & K O’Connor Pty Ltd argued the permit, which allowed 60 people to gather 30 times a year at Baba Budhaji Charitable Association, was unsuitable due to the proximity between the abattoir and the temple. Baba Budhaji Charitable Association, located on a 4.13ha triangle of land at 905 Kooweerup Road in a Green Wedge Zone, is 350 metres to the south of the abattoir and separated by two other properties as well as HealesvilleKooweerup Road. ‘Mad Max’ hoon hell
Break out the balloons - our local libraries are celebrating a milestone! The combination of a dirt road and speed has already seen one tragedy happen along this Avonsleigh road. And residents on Phillip Road are fed up with the dangerous driving and excessive speed limit which is just an accident waiting to happen. Dale, Matt and Jackie have each witnessed cars risking their own lives and others as they take blind corners too fast, hoon and push oncoming cars into the nature strip. STORY PAGE 7

A Pakenham anti-lockdown campaigner has been granted bail by the Supreme Court of Victoria after spending 22 days in custody. Monica Smit, 33, was charged with two counts of incitement and three counts of breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directions after being arrested in Brighton on 31 August.
She refused to consent to bail granted by the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 1 September, which included a curfew and conditions she shut down her group Reignite Democracy Australia’s website and social media accounts. In the bail variation application hearing on Wednesday 22 September, Victorian Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Hollingworth said Ms
