Office ‘nepotism’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Accused branch-stacking MP Adem Somyurek hired a female staffer in his electorate office as a favour to factional colleague and Greater Dandenong councillor Loi Truong, an IBAC inquiry heard. The staffer, who was paid for 22 taxpayerfunded casual shifts between April-early September 2019, was hired for no reason but “for Loi”. It was one of several Somyurek hires described as ’factional patronage’ or ’nepotism’ at the IBAC Operation Watts inquiry, which is examining the misuse of public funds for ALP party-political purposes.
Mr Somyurek agreed that Cr Truong chose his own “friend” to work in the MP’s office. He agreed Mr Truong was recruiting or “turning up” members to Labor branch meetings. But he denied the hiring was a “quid pro quo” in exchange for this. “The Cambodians had an MP. I was an MP. Loi was sort of with Anthony (Byrne, who is federal Holt MP). “There was a view amongst us all that the Vietnamese were missing out. “They had been with the Right for a long period of time. So when they wanted employment they should at least get it.” When asked what work the staffer did, Mr
Buying or Selling?
Somyurek said she did what electoral officers do - “answering the phones, emails, people coming in.” “It could be work coming in from the Vietnamese community as well, which tends to come in word of mouth and through the mobile phones. “What I knew was that she was meant to be turning up and I got told she was turning up. “I knew she was coming in, right, because she was a pain to the others.” IBAC Counsel Assisting, Chris Carr questioned the need given there was “negligible” activity in Mr Somyurek’s electorate office – which was said to have staffing costs of more than $1 million in the past four years.
Mr Carr grilled Mr Somyurek on whether “having people sit idle” was “value for money” to taxpayers, as required under law. The notion was “subjective”, Mr Somyurek said. MPs also were able to discriminate based on ideology, values, political views, political activism and loyalty, he said. “What does a Vietnamese-speaking person who provides a service to the Vietnamese community, which are about 25 per cent I think of some areas of my electorate – can you put a value on that?” There was a “bit of grey area” whether “factional work” was part of his “public duties”. NEWS
IN BRIEF
Back in the robes By Cam Lucadou-Wells Jim Memeti says he’ll focus on the community’s return to a “new Covid-normal” after being elected Greater Dandenong mayor for a record fifth time. He and deputy mayor Eden Foster were elected unopposed for the next 12 months by councillors at a meeting on 11 November. Both are Labor members. The ALP has had a stranglehold on the mayoralty since 2008. A “very humbled” Cr Memeti told Star Journal that he’d do everything he could to support the community during “Covid normal”. “There’s a big job to do. We’ve been in lockdown for the Covid-19 period over the past 20 months. “There are a lot of people in the business community and members of our community who have lost jobs or not seeing family and friends. “Everyone is talking about the mental health of people.” Recovery includes the re-opening of the council’s libraries, aquatic centres and “activation centres” like Harmony Square, Multicultural Place and Springvale Community Hub. As well as the return of “vibrant” cultural events and festivals that promote diversity and understanding, he said. The Covid material aid program, which started while Cr Memeti was mayor in 2020, would continue. “We’ll make sure no one goes without in the community. “There’s going to be challenges along the way. But it’s about how you react to the challenges and come out of them. “We’re the City of Opportunity. We’ll come out of this again. As Cr (Sean) O’Reilly said, we’ll make Greater Dandenong greater than before.” Works are also set to begin on big council
Deputy mayor Eden Foster and mayor Jim Memeti after their election on 11 November. infrastructure projects “right across the city” over the next 12 months. Such as Dandenong Aquatic and Wellbeing Centre (the Dandenong Oasis redevelopment) and Keysborough South Community Hub, as well as “getting ready” for works on Dandenong Community Hub. Springvale Boulevard and Noble Park CBD streetscaping works will also begin. Cr Memeti said he looked forward to working with and learning from deputy mayor Cr Foster. “I have found you a very gentle person and have taught me a lot about compassion and the less fortunate people in the community,”
Widespread deceptions
he told Cr Foster at the council meeting on 11 November. “I look forward to learning more from you on that.” Cr Foster paid tribute to her mother, who taught her to “never shy away from a challenge.” “A girl raised by a single mum in the City of Springvale today elected as deputy mayor. “It’s a true testament to the opportunities that the city offers young women from all walks of life.” As a psychologist, Cr Foster said there was a need to focus on the community’s wellbeing in the wake of Covid’s impacts. Fairness, equality and compassion would be brought to her role, she said. After a Covid-lockdown hiatus, councillors and council officers returned to the council chamber for the in-person mayoral vote. Councillor Tim Dark, who was unvaccinated and ill with Covid in late September, joined the meeting online. Cr Bob Milkovic, who abstained from voting in the 2020 mayoral election, was listed as an apology. “Hopefully all councillors will be able to join the meeting in person in due course,” Cr Memeti said. Cr Memeti, who migrated to Australia as a child, has lived in Greater Dandenong for 46 years. Successful in business, he said he’s been inspired to give back to the community that embraced his family. He noted that now four generations of his family live in Dandenong – including three children, five grandchildren and another grandchild due in 2022. He has been a Greater Dandenong councillor since 2005, serving as mayor in 2010, 2014, 2017 and 2020.
VCAT upholds ‘residential character’ By Jamie Salter City of Casey Council’s refusal of a proposed dwelling in Hallam on neighbourhood character grounds has been backed by the state’s planning tribunal. Council rejected the proposal, deciding it did not reflect the existing ’residential character of the area’. The subject site is a five-sided allotment located on the intersection of Mapleson Court and Frawley Road in Hallam, covering an overall area of 658 square metres. The surrounding area is predominantly residential, with the nearest commercial area located near the intersection of Princes Highway and South Gippsland Freeway in Dandenong South. It was proposed to develop an additional dwelling to the side of the existing dwelling
A proposal to construct an additional building on a property has been rejected by VCAT. with a frontage to Frawley Road. The existing dwelling on the subject land takes up a large proportion of the land, with the proposed additional building to include a study, kitchen, living area, toilet, and laundry at ground floor with three bedrooms an ensuite and bathroom at first floor level. The applicant appealed the council decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
VCAT senior member Jeanette Rickards agreed with council’s decision and said the planning application was not acceptable for the chosen location. “The desire to retain the existing dwelling results in the proposed dwelling being, in my view, squeezed into the area to the side of the existing dwelling,” Ms Rickards noted. “I agree with the council there is no separation between the built form and although the applicant sought to point out similar examples in this location, on this site the proposal will have an unreasonable visual impact on the streetscape where there is separation between dwellings. “This visual impact will also be highlighted by the need to provide an angled driveway resulting in minimal areas for the provision of landscaping on either side of this driveway.”
Police are seeking alleged swindlers who have bought $22,000-plus of goods with stolen credit card numbers in Keysborough and other parts of Melbourne. The men ‘purchased’ the goods at stores in April, May, July and August, as far afield as Ballarat, Echuca and Mornington. Police have released CCTV images of men wanted for questioning.
Four flee townhouse fire Four people were evacuated from a townhouse fire in Amaryn Court, Springvale. About 30 firefighters and eight appliances battled the blaze, which started in the backyard and spread into the rear of the timber double-storey dwelling about 11.53am on Thursday, 11 November. Arriving within minutes, Fire Rescue Victoria fireys found the home “well involved in fire”. Commander Brett Hamill praised the crews’ efforts in preventing the fire spreading to the upper floor and the smoke-logged adjoining townhouse. They brought the fire under control within 15 minutes. FRV specialists were investigating the cause of the blaze.
Fast, unroadworthy... impounded A car allegedly travelling at 174 km/h on Thompsons Road, Lyndhurst has been impounded. Somerville Highway Patrol officers intercepted the black Ford Falcon in the 90 km/h speed zone early on Friday 12 November. The vehicle was found to be unroadworthy, police say. The 28-year-old male driver from Narre Warren South will face charges on summons, such as drive at speed dangerous, exceed the speed limit by more than 45 km/h, and use an unroadworthy motor vehicle. His car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1038.
Teens trash house A Keysborough 14-year-old is among 15 teenagers arrested over allegedly trashing an unoccupied home in Aspendale Gardens. The house had been broken into and extensively damaged several times in September, police say. Windows and walls were allegedly smashed, walls graffitied, electrical fittings torn out and small fires lit in rooms. The Keysborough teen and two 14-yearolds from Aspendale Gardens were charged by Moorabbin CIU detectives with criminal damage and trespass. They are set to face a children’s court at a later date. Ten teenagers aged between 13 and 14 were issued with official cautions for criminal damage and trespass. A girl was released without charge.
183kmh P-plater arrested A 21-year-old P-plater has been allegedly caught speeding at 183 km/h on the Monash Freeway in Endeavour Hills. With two mates in the car, the Narre Warren man was pulled over by State Highway Patrol officers in the 100 km/h zone about 8.20pm on Friday 12 November. He was arrested at the scene and his Suburu impounded for 30 days. He is expected to be charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, speed/ manner dangerous, careless driving and speeding. “Travelling at such reckless speeds is extremely dangerous and irresponsible,” State Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Paul Storen said. “Probationary drivers have limited experience on the roads and adding wet weather to the mix – this could have easily ended in tragedy.”

‘Has she spoken to anyone’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Somyurek ‘in the dark’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells South Eastern Metro MP Adem Somyurek denied directing staffers to assist in the 2020 Greater Dandenong Council elections. “No. I was Local Government Minister. I did not want to be anywhere near it, I can tell you. “If anyone’s done anything, that was outside my knowledge.” In a newly-revealed tapped phone call “believed to be” 30 October 2019 played at IBAC, Mr Somyurek told an associate that “I want to catch up with Loi and then deal with Memeti”. Holt MP Anthony Byrne had earlier alleged at IBAC that Mr Somyurek lobbied councillors and “did in” Cr Loi Truong in the Greater Dandenong mayoral election on 14 November 2019. Mr Somyurek told Cr Truong that he’d do what he could to assist his mayoral election but was limited by his role as Local Government Minister, Mr Byrne told the inquiry. However, Mr Somyurek instead “lobbied” Greater Dandenong councillors Youhorn Chea and Sophie Tan – both of “Cambodian background” – to vote for victorious candidate Cr Jim Memeti. Mr Byrne’s staff members told him that
soon after the meeting Mr Somyurek met with Cr Memeti at a McDonald’s outlet “not far from my office” for two-and-a-half hours. “So that led me to surmise something like that happened.” Mr Byrne agreed there was a “relationship” between Mr Somyurek and Cr Memeti. Cr Memeti has reiterated his comments last year to Star News that Mr Somyurek had no direct influence in Greater Dandenong mayoral elections. He said “I can’t recall” his alleged meeting with Mr Somyurek at McDonald’s. He’d never stayed at a McDonald’s for two-and-a-half hours, he said. “I’ve never spoken to Mr Somyurek regarding elections. I’ve never heard of Mr Somyurek influencing the mayoral election – nor any other MPs. “It’s all done with councillors. All the councillors try to lobby their colleagues” The mayoral vote in 2019 was unusually a four-way contest between Crs Chea, Memeti, Truong and Maria Sampey. Last week, Cr Memeti was elected for his fifth term as mayor - notably while Mr Somyurek is no longer an ALP powerbroker but an independent MP.
Claims of office ‘nepotism’ From page 1 “I just think you need to accept that by design political jobs are political.” IBAC asserted some of Mr Somyurek’s staff were employed due to being branch-stacking recruiters or their factional “operational value”. Mr Somyurek had told the inquiry he’d hired another electorate officer because they were having a “hard time”. The officer had told IBAC he was paid for seven days while told not to turn up for work. He later alleged engaged in factional work, IBAC heard. A former ALP state candidate was hired out of “altruism” because they’d left a well-paying job to unsuccessfully contest a marginal seat. And a 20-year-old nephew of Mr Somyurek’s former electorate officer Pinar Yesil was paid a $95,000 salary despite having only previously worked in a pet shop. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Ms Yesil, a former Greater Dandenong mayor, had a “close personal relationship” with Mr Somyurek, IBAC was told. Mr Somyurek’s father was hired as a cleaner - though at much less than “market rates”, Mr Somyurek said. IBAC tabled charts showing Mr Somyurek and other Moderate Labor-faction MPs hiring each other’s relatives, including Mr Somyurek’s son at federal MP Anthony Byrne’s office. Mr Somyurek said nepotism was a symptom of a wider cultural issue than “one set of people”. He also argued that using publicly-funded electorate officers for branch-stacking was “deeply embedded“ in ALP culture. It was the culture he was “inducted” into, he said. “If you’re going to say there are good guys and bad guys in the Labor Party based on this stuff ... there are no good guys in the Labor Party, I can tell you that.”
Adem Somyurek tried to track down what a former female staffer did ahead of a 60 Minutes report airing in June 2020. myurek said he’d have to “fix up” paying for memberships in Springvale because Cr Truong “fixing it up is indexed to employment”. Instead, Mr Somyurek paid for the memberships in exchange for work for his son at his factional ally and Holt MP Anthony Byrne’s electorate office. At the inquiry, IBAC Counsel Assisting, Chris Carr asserted: “What you were saying was that for Loi to pay for memberships is a quid pro quo in return for which you give him a place on your staff; correct?” Mr Somyurek denied this, saying the female staffer was employed months before the covert recording. “There’s no way in the world that I will ever enter into an agreement like that with Mr Truong. “I crossed multiple lines, but it didn’t happen.“
Nomination of Representatives Greater Dandenong Multicultural and People Seeking Asylum Advisory Committee The City of Greater Dandenong is seeking expressions of interest from the community, organisations and service providers to fill a number of vacancies for the Multicultural and People Seeking Asylum Advisory Committee. Ahead of a 60 Minutes report ‘The Faceless Man’ on his alleged branch-stacking, MP Adem Somyurek had been anxious to find out about a staffer he’d employed the previous year. The staffer was a “friend” of Greater Dandenong councillor and ALP factional ally Loi Truong (see main story). At the time, Mr Somyurek was trying to work out “what have I done wrong”, he told the IBAC Operation Watts inquiry on 11 November. In a covert phone tap on 14 June 2020, he told then-Cabinet Minister and faction ally Robin Scott: “I just got an anxiety that they had some f***ing loose Vietnamese woman who f***ing I put on for Loi. “I wonder what the f*** she did, like she was f***ing mad.” He told Mr Scott he hadn’t even met the staff in the context of hiring her. “What do you even say when you haven’t even met the staff, what do you say to that?” Mr Somyurek said. “You’re busy, you’re a minister,” Mr Scott replied. Five minutes later, Mr Somyurek rang Cr Truong to confirm that the councillor was still “in contact” and “friends” with her. “Do you think she’s spoken to anyone? 60 Minutes or anything?” “No, no, no. No, I don’t think so,” Cr Truong replied, confirming she was a “very good friend”. “She loyal with us. One hundred per cent…. She’s good, she will do what we need.” Mr Somyruek asked Cr Truong to find out if the staffer spoke to 60 Minutes and what period she worked for him. In a phone tap in February 2020, Mr So-

Factional feud reignited By Cam Lucadou-Wells Former ALP powerbroker Adem Somyurek says he and Premier Daniel Andrews initiated a 2002 peace deal to end the party’s branchstacking war in the south east. Mr Andrews and Mr Somyurek discussed ending the “toxic” war between their rival factions Left and Right respectively, Mr Somyurek told an IBAC inquiry Operation Watts on 8 November. The genesis of the accord was that the pair “wanted to go into Parliament and pursue our career”. It was to stop a repeat of “really bad things” happening in the preselection battle for the safe federal seat of Holt in 1998. At the time, council and government “largesse” was used to win votes and “key people” over to each side. “People would have ended up in jail had that culture persisted,” Mr Somyurek said. He claimed Mr Andrews was “organising” the Left to get control of Holt. Leading the Right’s effort was confessed branch-stacker Anthony Byrne, who employed Mr Somyurek as an electorate officer at the time. Mr Byrne, who ultimately won preselection, was “leading the charge … basically invading or raiding the Left branch”, Mr Somyurek said. Mr Somyurek recalled “raiding” Left branch meetings, such as walking with a “whole bunch of Albanians” to then-Dandenong MP John Pandazopoulos’s office. About 80 “Bosnians” turned up to a Left branch at Noble Park Community Centre. “The Left followed suit at the Albanian soccer club where they had lined up all their Sri Lankans, about 100 of them lined up, before the Albanians were able to become members. “Raiding of the branches in particular was
Adem Somyurek described initiating a factional ‘peace deal’ with future Premier Daniel Andrews. very toxic, tempers were frayed, and it got nasty.” The Left and the Right were divided along ethnic lines, Mr Somyurek said. According to him, former faction overlord Stephen Conroy adopted “conservative”, “antiCommunist” communities to the Right – Turkish, Bosnian, Albanian, Vietnamese and Cambodian communities. The Left specialised in “ethnic minorities within nation states who had a grievance” – the Balkan Muslim, Balkan Christian, Serbs, Greeks, Kurds, Alawite Turks, Sri Lankan Tamils and Burghers. Mr Andrews and Mr Somyurek’s factional bosses Alan Griffin (Left) and Mr Byrne (Right) “ticked off” on the 2002 peace deal, he said.
Before the accord, there were more than 1000 members in Holt. It dropped to 200 by 2019. The south-east had become a “model of interfactional cooperation” with “no branch stacking” for 17 years, Mr Somyurek said. None of his electorate office staff were “recruiting (members) for me”, though they could “potentially recruit”. “I don’t have a problem with them doing factional work from my office… But that’s got to have limits. “I would insist that they turn up for work.” Mr Somyurek admitted to a scheme where MPs paid for numerous others’ renewed memberships – in breach of party rules.
When Mr Somyurek became an MP, he was asked by Mr Byrne to contribute. He estimated paying $2000 a year but didn’t know what happened to the money. “That’s Byrne’s operation. “Even after my factional sort of star rose, Byrne was still in charge of the South East. He was still the boss.” He claimed Mr Byrne was going to a “Vietnamese gentlemen” for $7000 for renewals. “I’m not sure what he promised him, but I’m sure he got it under false pretences. “I recall him trying to beg, borrow and steal to pay memberships.” The deal collapsed after the Left “unilaterally” broke it in late 2019, Mr Somyurek said. He hadn’t been interested in messages of the Left “running amok” until 24 December when learning of about 350 new recruits, he told the inquiry. In Mr Byrne’s texts in late 2019, which were earlier tabled at IBAC, he described Mr Somyurek as a “vandal” trying to “ramp up branch stacking in the south east”. At the time he believed Mr Somyurek was seeking to replace sitting Labor rival-faction MPs Gabrielle Williams (Dandenong) and Pauline Richards (Cranbourne) with Moderate Labor members. The party was being taken over by Mr Somyurek “whose sole objective was power and power alone,” Mr Byrne told IBAC on 11 October. “I had really hoped when Adem had become a Minister in 2018 that he would stop the factional activity. “The branch stacking wasn’t stopping … it actually started accelerating, and then started coming towards the South East. “As Adem was getting more and more power, it was almost becoming an existential threat for the Labor Party.”

‘Red shirts rort’ claims By Cam Lucadou-Wells Premier Daniel Andrews has been explosively accused of prior knowledge of the ALP’s $388,000 ‘red shirts’ rort at an IBAC inquiry. South Eastern Metropolitan MP Adem Somyurek, in evidence on 8 November, said he expressed misgivings to then-Opposition Leader Mr Andrews prior to signing up to the “extraordinary”, “gold-standard rort”. The “centralised” scheme was designed by upper house MP and former state treasurer John Lenders to use taxpayer-funded electorate officers to campaign for Labor prior to the 2014 state election. “I went to the Premier (Mr Andrews). I said, ‘Do you know what John’s doing?’,” Mr Somyurek said. “He said, ‘Yes.’ “Words to the effect, ‘Well, you’re either going to - you know, if you want to win an election or not,’ basically.” Mr Somyurek nonetheless signed up to the scheme, in which MPs signed pre-filled time sheets to allow their electorate officers to “sit in a campaign office somewhere and campaign all day”. Mr Andrews has consistently denied knowing about the rort. A Victoria Police investigation has cleared more than a dozen Labor MPs of wrongdoing. At the IBAC Operation Watts hearing, Mr Somyurek said an Ombudsman report into the scandal didn’t “smack it down sufficiently”. Ombudsman Deborah Glass labelled the rorting of MP’s casual office staff as an “artifice” but could have used “stronger language” such as “corruption”, Mr Somyurek said. “She could have referred it for charges. She didn’t. “The Ombudsman had the gold standard rort and didn’t actually smack it down suffi-

Within a month of the report, he gave directions to his electorate office staff to do “factional work”, he admitted at the inquiry. During their working time, they harvested and filled in members’ ALP national conference ballot papers to benefit Mr Somyurek’s Moderate Labor faction. Text messages showed that Mr Somyurek was directing this “party-political” work. “I was sticking to the principles of how I’ve always done things, right?” Mr Somyurek told the inquiry. “That, you know, it’s acceptable to do some party-political stuff as long as it wasn’t silly. “It was proportionate, not disproportionate like Red Shirts was.” Mr Somyurek said all state political parties then deliberately legislated in 2019 to continue “party-political activity” by MP’s electorate officers.

charging their public duties?” Mr Somyurek said it was “entirely consistent with legislation”. “However, Commissioner, I do understand your point. “There’s got to be some limit to it, otherwise … you can employ people to wash your car all day.”

Adem Somyurek at the Operation Watts inquiry on 9 November.
Staff were paid for ‘doing own work’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells An electorate officer for South-Eastern Metro MP Adem Somyurek didn’t even log into his computer while being paid for purportedly working at home for five days in mid-2020, an IBAC inquiry was told. Dr Hussein Haraco – an alleged branchstacking recruiter in Melbourne’s North - was “certainly” not doing “electorate office work” during the full-day shifts in May and June 2020, Counsel Assisting IBAC, Chris Carr asserted. “The whole notion of working from home was going to be problematic for quiet offices,” Mr Somyurek responded. “I can understand they’re probably thinking there’s not much work that’s going to come out of this, but they should have at least logged in.” On a secret phone tap tabled at the inquiry, Mr Somyurek told his faction colleague and Banyule councillor Rick Garotti on 15 June 2020 that Dr Haraco needed to be “really careful”. It was shortly after 60 Minutes had aired branch-stacking allegations against Mr Somyurek. “I know he comes to work all the time. He just needs to log in … because my office is being investigated unfairly,” Mr Somyurek said to Cr Garotti. At the inquiry, Mr Carr asserted that Mr Somyurek “at least apprehended, if not knew, that there was no way Dr Haraco was actually doing any real work”. “You certainly didn’t want anyone knowing
that there was no real electorate office work being done in your electorate office, did you?” Mr Somyurek said he “can’t remember what I had in my mind at that point in time”. He said he was “paranoid at that point where … I thought I didn’t do anything wrong so it was a problem for me.” He denied Dr Haraco was helping him as a “factional operative”. “No he was helping himself… They’ve got their own objectives in politics. I don’t own him.” Dr Haraco, a Somali community leader, was an alleged branch-stacking recruiter for Mr Somyurek’s Moderate Labor faction in Melbourne’s North according to earlier IBAC evidence. He had been scheduled to appear at the inquiry but was postponed due to a medical certificate. A staffer’s review of the MP’s quiet office in 2019 reported staff “doing there (sic) ‘own’ thing”, which was “probably factional work”. Dr Haraco’s duties were described in the review as “does his own work from the office. He answers the phone when required”. Mr Somyurek told the inquiry that “hasn’t been sanctioned but it fits with someone being idle doing other things. “Obviously he’s not paid to be doing other work.” Mr Carr asserted that some bosses would treat it as a “sackable offence”. Mr Somyurek said it depended on the na-
ture of Dr Haraco’s work. “If it was his business I certainly would have spoken to him. “I would take offence to someone just sitting there not answering telephone calls and doing their own thing. “Your number one priority has got to be doing electoral work.” Mr Somyurek said he hadn’t seen the review, which was directly emailed to him by the author. Dr Haraco received on average less than one email a day as Mr Somyurek’s electorate officer between 2017-’21, according to IBAC data. “And he doesn’t seem to be replying to them,” Mr Carr asserted. Mr Somyurek replied: “I would say that’s a commentary on safe Labor seat, Upper House MPs rather than just on Mr Haraco,” He said he was “willing to accept” that his staff did “factional work” in the office. “But… I just fail to see what they can do factionally on a day in, day out basis.” In the review, the author Emma Walters described that “constituent enquiries are low” and “no walk ins in the last week”. “The telephone has rung once in the last three days, and I answered it.” There were just 18 incoming phone calls between April and June 2020, according to data tabled at IBAC. “I’ve never claimed that it’s a really busy office,” Mr Somyurek told the inquiry.
Fomer ALP powerbroker Adem Somyurek admitted at an IBAC inquiry to losing “all perspective” during the reignition of a factional war in the South East. During a branch-stacking operation in early 2020, Mr Somyurek was paying for members’ fees from groups such as ‘the Somalis’ to join his Moderate Labor faction. He conceded to the Operation Watts inquiry that he knew the practice was against ALP party rules and unethical. “And it was in response to hostile action from the (Socialist Left faction) but that’s no excuse. “I don’t have any evidence of that. They were turning up a lot of people.” During a covert recording, Mr Somyurek is told by a colleague that signatures on membership forms don’t match signatures in a branch meeting attendance book. “Do people check much?” Mr Somyurek replied to the colleague. At the inquiry, IBAC Counsel Assisting, Chris Carr asserted: “You are entirely unperturbed by the idea that signatures have been forged in this process.” Mr Somyurek told the inquiry that forgery was a “possibility” but there were other possible explanations. “Do you accept that you felt no compunction at signatures having been forged?” Mr Carr later asked. “I’m willing to say, yeah, that shouldn’t have been my response,” Mr Somyurek said. “I should have been more concerned. “I concede, look, I’ve lost all perspective during that time, yes, absolutely. “I’m not going to fight on this issue. There’s footage of me in the 60 Minutes program. “I had lost all perspective and you can condemn me in the strongest possible terms and I should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.” He agreed people would resort to forging signatures due to “pressures” from the “stacking war”. “But that pressure was felt on me. “It was massive pressure on me, but not necessarily on those people that would have done it.” Mr Somyurek said operatives may have not been able to find members and “resorted to doing some, you know, shifty things”. “All without your knowledge, I assume?” Mr Carr said. “Yeah. I mean – that’s right,” Mr Somyurek said.
‘Charity’ job for staff: ‘I was told not to go to the office’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A staff member for MP Adem Somyurek has alleged he didn’t have to do “electorate officer work” during up to seven casual shifts in the office. “I was told not to go into the office,“ Jacob Cripps allegedly told the IBAC Operation Watts inquiry - an allegation that Mr Somyurek said was “absolutely untrue”. IBAC Counsel Assisting, Chris Carr asserted: “It was effectively just a charitable thing that he would be given what I’ll characterize as free money by the taxpayer because he was going through a hard time.” Mr Somyurek, who signed Mr Cripps’ time sheet, replied: “Not true. Not true… Why would I do that?” dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Mr Carr said Mr Cripps was immediately afterwards engaged in “factional work on your behalf”. “I wasn’t that desperate to have him, I can tell you. Like, I’m not going to do that. No way,” Mr Somyurek replied. “Because that would be the most egregious form of corruption, wouldn’t it, Mr Somyurek?” “Yes.” According to Mr Cripps’ time sheet, he was ‘working on project’. The official time sheet stipulated that payments couldn’t be claimed for “party-political activities” – a detail that Mr Somyurek said he had not noticed. Mr Somyurek said he didn’t know what work Mr Cripps was doing “but I did not tell him not to go to my office.”
“I mean, this guy had been moved on from a federal MP’s office because he switched factions, so … I felt … honour bound to help find him a job. “But not free money.” Another Somyurek electoral staffer was allegedly paid for working full-day shifts in two electoral offices on the same day. According to his timesheet, Salazar Youhorn had purportedly been ‘working on a project’ from 9am-5.06pm on 18 June 2020. He was working from home due to Covid-19, the timesheet signed by Mr Somyurek stated. Mr Youhorn was also paid for working on the same day in Clarinda MP Meng Heang Tak’s office for “data processing/office admin”.
Mr Somyurek said Mr Youhorn regularly worked on a particular weekday in his office. There seemed to be a “logistical problem”, in that Mr Youhorn seemed to be at home “working for two offices”. “Maybe someone said something to someone in my office that he’s going to be in Heang’s office, so he should be doing another day for my office. “There might have been a bit of a confusion like that. I can’t see anything sinister in it.” When asked if Mr Youhorn was doing factional work, he said Mr Youhorn was part of the “Cambodian clique”. “They’ve got numbers in the party, so let’s put it that way.” He admitted during lockdown, Mr Youhorn was doing “probably not much” work.

Palm Plaza pop-up vaccination clinic was part of a campaign to boost Covid vax rates. 251071
Double vax tops 80% By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong’s Covid double-vax rate has surpassed 80 per cent, according to latest official data. As of 8 November, 81.5 per cent of residents 16-and-over were fully vaccinated. The single dose rate is 92.2 per cent. After a sustained public health campaign, the council area has largely bridged the gap with the rest of Victoria (about 84 per cent fully vaccinated). In neighbouring Casey, double-vax coverage is 88.2 per cent. As reported last week, there remains pockets of resistance, particularly in the Doveton, Dandenong and Hampton Park postcodes. Meanwhile the surge of Covid infections in the South East is slowing, with 408 new cases in the past week in Greater Dandenong and
672 in Casey. Active cases dropped by 953 across the two council areas in the past seven days. There are still more than 2700 in Casey and Greater Dandenong. Six aged care facilities in the region have active cases, with three reporting Covid-linked fatalities. Belvedere Noble Park recorded 39 resident infections and nine deaths, Regis Dandenong North 22 resident infections and two deaths and Japara Viewhills Manor in Endeavour Hills four infected residents and one death. There are also clusters in Arcare Keysborough (22 residents, 13 staff), Rosewood Downs Dandenong (17 residents, 1 staff) and TLC Noble Manor in Noble Park (six staff). Postcode hotspots are Dandenong (524 active cases), Cranbourne (464), Narre Warren (250) and Noble Park (214).
Greater Dandenong’s outgoing mayor Angela Long has ‘scrapped’ together a parting gift to Greater Dandenong’s SES unit. On 10 November, Cr Long and husband Barry donated $600 raised from scrap aluminium cans, car parts and tubing. The metal had been collected at home as well as other donors to the cause, Cr Long said. “This saved nearly half a ton of scrap from going to land fill. “I was also able to sell some plants that l had propagated which is included in the $600.” Cr Long has collected scrap aluminium for more than 30 years. “When we belonged to a masonic group The Custodians for over 28 years, the money that was raised though scrap aluminium and social events went to a lot of different organisations such as tutoring for children
that were falling behind in their schooling.” Previously, the Longs raised a $620 donation to the SES unit at their 50th wedding anniversary. “We had a barbecue in our back yard and on the invitations that we sent out it was stated that we would like all our guests to make a donation to the SES instead of buying us a gift.” Over time, Cr Long has secured donations from “different organisations” to the SES unit. A family friend once donated $1500 to replace a training light on two SES trucks. “They sometimes have their equipment stolen while they are doing their job which is a very low act and can be expensive to replace. “I urge every-one, if you are able, to donate to the SES as most of the workers are volunteers and they do fantastic work.”
Cr Angela Long presents her donation to Greater Dandenong SES members Anthony Ferlaino, Michael Prior and Daniel Cooksley.

IN BRIEF Stolen car
Bikie extortion Three men have been charged with an alleged extortion linked to the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang. Echo Taskforce detectives charged the men after raiding a Hallam gym and three homes in Narre Warren, Hallam and Cranbourne East from 6am on Wednesday 9 November. A 49-year-old patched Comanchero member from Narre Warren was charged by Echo Taskforce detectives with extortion, blackmail, threat to kill and car theft. A 19-year-old Hallam man was charged with extortion, possess steroids, fail to provide information pursuant to a 465AA order and weapons offences. They were set to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court that afternoon. A 25-year-old Cranbourne East man was charged with extortion, possess steroids, possess proceeds of crime, fail to provide information pursuant to a 465AA order and weapons offences. He is expected to be bailed to appear before court at a later date. Detectives seized cash, weapons and steroids during the raids. Police say the arrests are part of an investigation into an alleged extortion and subsequent threats made to two victims over the past 12 months. “The Comanchero OMCG is a group historically linked to offences of immense community harm such as extortion, so to arrest three people today as part of this investigation is an excellent result,” Detective Inspector Dan Ryan from Echo Taskforce said. “We also understand how difficult it can be for victims to engage with police in these matters.
Three people have been arrested in an allegedly stolen car in Mulgrave after being followed by the police Air Wing. The red Holden Commodore was spotted by police on Police Road about 6pm on Saturday 13 November. After being chased by the Air Wing through several suburbs, the driver abandoned the car at a shopping centre on Police Road. A male then got into an allegedly stolen black Audi with allegedly stolen number plates. Nunawading Highway Patrol officers intercepted the Audi on Police Road and arrested the driver and two occupants. A 23-year-old Dandenong man was charged with 11 charges including theft, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, handling stolen goods, weapons, traffic and bail offences. A 24-year-old Berwick woman was charged with four offences, including possessing a drug of dependence, weapons and bail offences. They were remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 14 November. A 31-year-old Keysborough man was charged with six offences, including theft, handle stolen goods, possessing proceeds of crime and traffic offences.
Covid rise
A man is arrested during a police raid of a Hallam home on 9 November. “It’s important that community is aware of the support police can provide when they are a victim of offending such as this, and that we will do everything we can to ensure those who
purposely intimidate the public in this way are held to account.” Any information about OMCG activity to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
Active Covid cases in Greater Dandenong are rising again despite the fully-vaxxed rate topping 80 per cent. In the past five days, there’s been a gradual rise to 970 active cases. There were 265 new cases in the past week. Postcode hotspots include Dandenong (455 active cases and 134 new cases in the past week), Noble Park (201, 52), Springvale (130, 48), Keysborough (128, 38) and Endeavour Hills (96, 27). Current active clusters are at Lyndhurst Primary School and Dandenong South Primary School.
FOCUS ON … BOOK NOW FOR CHRISTMAS
Dress it up real fancy FANCY dress or costume parties are a worldwide tradition. This year revellers may decide to host or attend a themed party which requires them to dress up. Here are some fun costume tips for the next festive fancy affair. Some people might choose a specific theme or period in time, such as colonial, pirate, regency and cowboy. Anyone who is invited to a fancy dress Christmas function should ask the host if there is a specific theme for dress. Christmas costume parties can incorporate any choice of costume. You can dress as Santa’s helper, a reindeer, Christmas tree or pixie. Santa is the obvious choice, but you can opt for anything else seasonal, for example a Grinch or a gift, a Barbie Doll or racing car driver, providing the costume is available or easy to make. Parties might be themed on the 1920s era of the gangster, where guests dress as Al Capone, Dutch Shultz and Jack Diamond. A moll is the girlfriend or wife of a mobster. Guests attending parties that centre around the 1920s can use other accessories like tommy guns, spats and fedora hats. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Always choose safe and comfortable costumes for kids. Being the end of the school year there are many fancy dress events coming up for children, including the school assemblies or end of year Christmas show. There are lovely ways to dress small children for a Christmas theme, as lambs or fairies, angels or their favourite fairytale character. For more generic themes they might choose to be dressed as sunflowers, bumblebees and butterflies. Be sure to pay close attention to comfort and safety. Always check that the outfit is free of any loose buttons, broken zippers or any other faulty accessories that may be hazardous to the child’s safety. Fancy dress for couples and groups can play with the theme. No matter what the theme, guests arriving as couples or in groups may consider dressing to a similar theme. Famous couples is a popular theme to dress for like Bonnie and Clyde, Mary and Joseph or Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. At a futuristic themed party with the wife and kids why not dress up as The Jetsons. Collaborating with friends can make the experience more fun and costumes more interesting.

Designed for engineering The world is changing very rapidly, with new technologies driving both future growth and a significant increase in demand for new job roles and skillsets, particularly in the STEM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. With rapidly evolving technologies comes the need for schools to adapt their programs to ensure students are receiving quality education in the fields that are likely to result in continuous, sustainable employment. Dandenong High School has recognised the need to ensure our students are thoroughly prepared for university study and the workforce, and have decided to launch a dedicated design engineering academy commencing for Year 9 students in 2022. The academy program will be taught in the new design centre, a purpose-built, state-of-the-art and futurefocused learning precinct. The academy will provide students with a deeply immersive and full-faceted STEM program and a clear learning pathway to an extensive array of tertiary courses and career opportunities. Although a specially designed STEM program, all units and subjects studied in the academy will have a direct link to VCE subjects under the Victorian Curriculum, examples of these units may include: cyber security, Computational thinking, engineering and robotics, the psychology of artificial intelligence, applied physics, coding and programming, software development, digital design and manufacturing, and data analytics.
In addition, students will be actively encouraged to compete in STEM competitions at a very high level. The academy promises to offer a stimulating educational environment. Students will enjoy a range of enrichment and co-curricular experiences through partnerships with universities, including RMIT and Swinburne, as well as study trip opportunities to Silicon Valley in California. These opportunities will enable students to gain recognised micro-credentials and qualifications. If your child shows interest in the STEM fields, please visit the school’s website or contact the general office for further details on 9792 0561.

Teaching crafty children Teaching a little one to use scissors seems to inspire fear in a lot of parents, however, a good sturdy pair of scissors with safety blades means that even a toddler can handle a pair of scissors and an adult’s blood pressure can remain stable! “There seems to be a lot of concern about when is the ‘best’ time to introduce scissor skills to a child’s crafty repertoire,” says leading craft expert, Shannon Wong-Nizic, from OhCreativeDay. Here are Shannon’s top tips for parents looking to teach their young child how to cut safely and effectively: Open-shut them - The first skill to learn is opening and closing the scissors. This is when a spring-assisted pair of scissors is a good choice. Around the age of two, a child will often open the scissors with both hands. At this stage of development, they aren’t ready to begin cutting paper. Cutting playdough is a great way to encourage strengthening hands and growing accustomed to the open/close nature of using scissors. Thumbs up - From the start, it’s important to remind children of the ‘thumbs up’ position while holding scissors. The thumb is placed in the smaller hole and the fingernail must face the ceiling. Draw a smiley face on a child’s thumbnail when they are first learning to hold scissors, making sure that the smile is facing the ceiling at all times when cutting. Snip snip - Once opening and closing the scissors has been mastered, kids can move onto practising snipping paper. They are not moving the paper forward as they cut, simply snipping. Cut and hold - Around the age of three, children can begin moving scissors forward along paper to cut. After this skill is acquired, children begin also using their non-

dominant hand to hold the paper and move it to allow cutting with the dominant hand. Children at this stage can begin to cut along straight lines, with varying accuracy. more complex shapes with increased accuracy. The right tools for the job - When it comes to scissor skills, having a top-quality pair of scissors is a must. Shannon learnt the hard way with her firstborn when she attempted to introduce scissors with her, using cheap scissors that caused much toddler angst.

DNA’s history preserved A 50-year time capsule has been buried beneath the century-old setting for Dandenong’s new contemporary art gallery. The former local heritage-listed Masonic Hall is being transformed into the Dandenong New Art (DNA) Gallery, which opens in 2022. It had been used by Freemasons from the 1920’s until 1991, and was later leased by the Spanish Christian Church. Mayor Angela Long said the site, which is listed in Greater Dandenong’s heritage study as historically and architecturally significant, was also important to her and husband Barry. Mr Long had been a member of the Freemason’s Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. “l have supported him for all that time and
cooked in the old Masonic Hall kitchen for 20 years,” Cr Long said. The time capsule will document the Masonic Hall’s “long and fascinating history”. It will include items such as the site’s land selection papers and historic titles as well as Freemasons 1938 and 1976 Jubilee souvenirs. Local artist Hung Lin’s drawings of the site and photos of the redevelopment will also be enclosed. The capsule has been documented as part of the council’s civic and cultural heritage collection, and will be unearthed at the 50-year anniversary of the DNA Gallery in 2072. Cr Long thanked Dandenong and District Historical Society and Freemasons Victoria for their input and support.

Concern swim skills sank in lockdown Swim school closures and dropping learn-toswim enrolments during Covid will increase drowning risks this summer, according to a recent life-saving report. Royal Life Saving Society national CEO Justin Scarr wrote in the society’s National Drowning Report that Covid restrictions could impact drowning risks in coming months and over years. “Swim school closures and falling learn to swim enrolments may have generational impacts on swimming and lifesaving skills.” Drowning in multicultural communities was a priority issue, according to the report.
Migrants, not including international students and tourists, comprised 29 per cent of drownings in Australia in the decade up to 2019. JUMP! Swim School in Noble Park reopened after 15 weeks in lockdown. Its chief executive Mark Collins said swim teachers had noticed a drop-off in swimming skills during the hiatus. “Many kids expect to be able to swim like they could three months ago but it’s just not the case. “It only takes two or three weeks to start losing core swimming skills, 15 weeks is a long
time for kids to be away from lessons. “The time of year is also extremely concerning. Usually, summer swimmers are made in winter but local kids have just missed all of their winter lessons.” Mr Collins said there was a need to be “extra vigilant” around water this summer, as well as to urgently book kids into learn-to-swim programs. “We all need to explain to kids that their swim skills may not be what they used to be, as often they jump in with the same confidence yet quickly find that they can’t swim like they used to.”

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 24 November 1921 School’s War Record Books In the Town Hall, Dandenong on Friday assembled the combined school children, teachers, and many parents. The occasion was the presentation of the Education Department’s War Record Book. Which is given to every school in the State, and to those teachers, and dependants of the fallen, who enlisted from the Department. Mr Burgess, District Inspector, said this work of the Education Department commenced seven years ago, at the Town Hall Melbourne. A pledge was given to support the soldiers to the finish. It had been done, and a tribute was paid worldwide to the work of the children in this respect. The book is a compete record of the activities of the department throughout and contains a short biography of

A Hannukah lamp, which features in the Chanukah festival.

I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to write a Message of Hope in the November when the Jewish people celebrate Chanukah, or some people spell Hannukah, the Festival of Lights. The eight-day Jewish Festival commences on Sunday 22 December. From Melbourne and New York and Moscow, thousands of people will gather to light menorahs. I loved Chanukah as a child because of my favourite potato pancakes - known as Latkes which I still cook today. Chanukah commemorates the regaining of the Temple and the building of a new altar in

Rupee after Triple Crown By Gerard Guthrie
Dylan Chapman has linked with Doveton. 243410

Doveton lock in to Southern Division 2 By Nick Creely The Southern Football Netball has officially advised clubs of the divisional structure for season 2022, with competition newcomers Doveton locked in for Division 2. The Doves - who crossed over from the Premier Division of the Outer East competition - will form part of a 10-team division including the likes of Keysborough, Hampton Park, Caulfield Bears, Chelsea Heights, East Brighton, Hampton, Heatherton, Highett and Skye. Springvale Districts have officially joined the Division 1 competition alongside another newcomer in Cranbourne, who have also joined from Outer East. It’s been a busy period of recruiting for the Doves, who are busy bolstering its list under
new coach Michal Cardamone. The Doves have landed a big name in ruckman Dylan Chapman, who has crossed over from Officer in a huge signing. Chapman has won two club best and fairests with the Kangaroos, was the league runner up in the best and fairest for the Outer East Division 1 in 2021, and has been a four-time Team of the Year representative. He’s widely regarded as one of the most dominant footballers in the region. Also joining Chapman at the Doves is fellow Officer duo Ash Brown and Jake Ingaliso, with the pair expected to add a touch of class. Brown is a classy half-forward who has played representative football, while Ingaliso is a twotime Team of the Year representative in 2019 and 2021, where he has established himself as
one of the most attacking key defenders in the competition. The Doves have also announced key signings in forward Trav Woodfield, who has spent time with Officer and more recently Cora Lynn to great success, Jarrod Thompson who has crossed over from Scoresby, and midfielder Charlie O’Neill who originally signed with the club in 2020 before the pandemic forced him to move to Cairns. The club also previously announced that Michael Cardamone - who has kicked 626 goals from 284 senior matches - is signed on as playing-coach - as well as announcing the return of defender Josh Viney, the signing of Oakleigh Districts midfielder Harry Seymour, and are also hoping for one of its prized recruits from 2020, Austin Deneys to get on the field.
Wild weather has the final say on cricket By Nick Creely Wet weather had the final say on the opening round of cricket across Victoria on Saturday, with all of the Journal’s local competitions unable to get a start. Rain and wind wreaked havoc on the state across Friday and Saturday, forcing the associations across Victoria to deem grounds unplayable. The Dandenong District Cricket Association made an early call to cancel weekend play on Thursday, however have pushed back the start of the season to this Saturday to ensure no games of cricket have been lost this season. The Victorian Premier Cricket competition cancelled its Men’s and Women’s opening rounds which were fixtured for Saturday and Sunday, with both days abandoned and points shared. The Victorian Sub District Cricket Association have also moved its Round 1 matches to its reserve day, Sunday 5 December to ensure that no games of cricket have been lost. 22 STAR JOURNAL

Superstar Aston Rupee confirmed his status as the world’s fastest greyhound when packing too much ‘firepower’ for his rivals in the Group 3 Shootout (515m) at Sandown Park on Thursday night. Trained by Glenn Rounds for prominent owner/breeder Ray Borda, Aston Rupee is now on target to become only the second greyhound after legendary sprinter/sire Bombastic Shiraz in 2003 to win the ‘Triple Crown’, consisting of the Topgun, Shootout and Melbourne Cup. “It’s alive,” Rounds told Sandown’s Jason Adams post race. “He’s won two of them, so it’s alive. Next week (Friday’s Melbourne Cup heats) is another dog race and we go and do it again.” Five nights after defeating the best sprinters in the land in the G1 Topgun at The Meadows, his first G1 success, Aston Rupee added the Shootout to previous feature victories in G3 Speed Star series at both Sandown and The Meadows. Aston Rupee holds Sandown’s 515m record after clocking 28.79sec on September 9, while he then became the first sprinter to break 29 seconds twice at the track with a 28.89sec run on October 28. With his blistering recent form and stellar Sandown statistics, Aston Rupee stifled betting on the four-greyhound $25,000 winner-takes-all Shootout, starting at $1.40 from Box 3. Defending Shootout champion Tiggerlong Tonk (Box 7), runner-up to Aston Rupee in the Topgun, was the $2.90 second elect, with Lakeview Walter (Box 1) at $10.80 and McCooly’s Lad (Box 5) $19.40. Tiggerlong Tonk led Aston Rupee in the Topgun and many pundits expected the veteran to again make the running, but the Shootout was over as a contest when the long odds-on favourite continued his recent habit of flying the traps. It was a matter of ‘watch the clock’ when the son of KC And All and Aston Miley jumped sweetly and found the front with a 5.02sec first split. Tiggerlong Tonk gave his all in pursuit but couldn’t make any inroads, as Aston Rupee increased the margin handsomely in the home straight, careering away by 5.66 lengths in 29.10sec. While well outside his course record, it was a scintillating performance on a track that had been affected by heavy rain last weekend and subsequent repair work. “He’s got his timing and his box manners are beautiful,” said Rounds, who with late partner Judy Hayley won the Shootout in 2001 with Junior Whisky. “It’s very pleasing to see him driving the way he is. “Very nice (the time). We’ve had the trouble you had here with the washaway of the track. We all know the rain that came through Melbourne last week.” It was Aston Rupee’s 18th win from 31 starts, his seventh from his last eight, and seventh from 12 at Sandown, and it’s no surprise he’s $5 favourite in TAB’s ‘All In’ Melbourne Cup market. “No. Where?” Rounds quipped when asked if there was an area Aston Rupee could improve after his faultless Shootout display. “He’s an amazing animal!”

An exciting season ahead By Nick Creely There’s plenty of reason for excitement across the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s Turf 2 and Turf 3 competitions with another monster summer of cricket set for the local region. Here’s how the clubs are shaping up..
DDCA
DANDENONG DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION
TURF 2 and TURF 3 SEASON PREVIEW
TURF 2 BEACONSFIELD Beaconsfield narrowly missed out on finals despite big seasons from Tyler Clark, Michael Vandort, Callan Tout and Nathan Goodes, and under new coach Brendan Johnson will be hoping it can shake off the disappointment with a big campaign. Remaining consistent will be the key for the Tigers. CRANBOURNE The Mick Sweeney- led Cranbourne is looking to build on its third-place finish last season. The Eagles have gained Matt Collett from Dandenong West, with the dangerous wicketkeeper batter a handy addition, while have lost Craig Hookey and Jordan Margenberg to HSD. There’s plenty of talent in the ranks within this group to inflict some more damage in the competition this season. DANDENONG WEST The Westers have certainly lost a few, namely gun spinner Riley Siwes to Berwick, Matt Collett to Cranbourne, as well as Dylan Diacono and Ethan French, but will back in its depth to stay in the hunt after finishing as runners-up. With Anthony Brannan set to take on the mantle as coach, there is optimism that despite some losses an ingrained winning culture and strong recent form in one-day cricket can yield some strong results. HEINZ SOUTHERN DISTRICTS There’s been no club that has recruited as heavily as Heinz Southern Districts after being relegated from Turf 1 after a tough 2020/21 campaign. It’s truly the beginning of a new era for the club, with Craig Hookey coming across from Cranbourne as captain-coach. The Cobras have lost some quality, namely Udara Hettige to Hallam but have welcomed Jordan Margenberg (Cranbourne), Jason Ward (Richmond), ex-Victorian underage all-rounder Triyan De Silva (Dandenong), Maheesha Gamage (Casey South Melbourne), Ethan French (Dandenong West), Liam Jansen (Buckley Ridges) and Matthew Blanch (Frankston Peninsula) to bolster the list as they roll out a virtually new side. KEYSBOROUGH Keysborough have moved up from Turf 2 after a magnificent premiership in Turf 3 last year. The Knights have kept their premiership dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Silverton will be hoping for a swift bounce back this season. 223928 side together as the club takes the step up in grades, but have recruited nicely with Stephen Hennessy from Springvale South added to bolster the batting. Christo Otto has also stepped up as captain-coach with his group looking to make a splash. LYNDALE Lyndale would be disappointed with its seventh place finish last season, but remain in Turf 2 and will be hoping to nudge for a finals position. The club has bolstered its list with the addition of Surien Silva from Donvale, but have lost Owais Rashid, however it’s a steady group under skipper Ben Montgomery, who will be hoping the likes of Silva, Brendan Ash, Priyan De Silva and Harish Rao can fire the Dales up the ladder. PARKFIELD Parkfield captain-coach Steve Cannon will be hoping that his club can take another plunge in Turf 2 this season and return to the finals, and have kept the majority of its group together, bar leading run-scorer Tahil Dehegaspitya who has moved to South Australia. Zaron Chanel joins the club and will add some depth with the ball, but it’s a pretty steady ship and one that will expect to compete.
PARKMORE PIRATES The Pirates are an interesting group, full of talent but not quite able to bridge the gap and clinch that Turf 2 title over the last few seasons. The Pirates have addressed some needs in the batting department, with Abhinav Bhatia crossing from Coomora and ex-Frankston Premier batter Jaime Brohier signing on, and if both can fire with the blade will make the side a very dangerous prospect. Madhawa Fonseka, Ammar Bajwa and Mohomad Safras also loom as crucial cogs in the Pirate machine.
TURF 3 COOMOORA A third-placed finish from Coomoora last season gives optimism it can take another step. The Roos have lost Abhinav Bhatia to Parkmore, but the addition of Malan Madusanka and Dean Krelle plug some gaps in the list, while new non-playing coach Andrew O’Meara will be hoping for vast improvements across the board. DOVETON It was a 2020/21 of great promise for the Doves, and now it’s time to take the plunge from fifth into finals cricket. Coach Troy Hancock has brought in ex-Emerald captain Mitch Daley
who will add firepower with the bat, while having the likes of the great Ryan Hendy,, Dale Jose and Ken Smart firing will go a long way. FOUNTAIN GATE There’s a bit of change for Fountain Gate ahead of Round 1 against Hampton Park – David Sime has taken over as coach and life member Stephen White as captain. Rising quick Jas Singh returns from Premier level after a brief stint and will lead the attack, while the Gators have added to its batting stocks with Dylan Diacono from Dandenong West. HAMPTON PARK Turf 3 newcomers Hampton Park will be hoping for a big win to start its season after a memorable Turf 4 premiership. The Redbacks were the standout side in their division last season and under recommitted coach Phill North will be confident it has what it takes to compete in the step up in grade. LYNBROOK Lynbrook is another side who would’ve expected better last season, but will back in its culture to push hard for finals. Jay and Jesse Walia were excellent last season, as was Shane D’Rozario and Varun Singh, so there is enough quality to suggest a return up the table is possible. NARRE NORTH Narre North ventures down to Turf 3 after relegation from Turf 2 and will be desperate for a big round 1 win. The club has experienced a tough few seasons and have had to back in its youth, and struggled with the bat in particular so will be hoping for improvement in that area. SILVERTON Captain-coach Simon Beshara will be hoping for rapid improvement after a sixth-placed finish last season, and with the addition of Dilum Weerarathne from Lilydale and Rob North (Hampton Park) will be hoping it’s found the missing pieces. Selva Tharaka will once again be crucial for the Bakers if they’re to return to finals action SPRINGVALE Springvale were so close to achieving premiership glory last season, and were for so long the benchmark side. But the Demons just fell short and will be hoping it can swiftly move on and challenge again. Nuwan Mendis was extraordinary with almost 600 runs and will be relied upon again, while the likes of Harmandip Sahota and Sachintha Rajapakse will need to be at their best once again with the ball.
