The Garfield community is fighting to save an iconic bakery after plans reveal the site could be developed to accommodate a string of new shops. Last week, a group of concerned residents gathered to protest a plan to build two additional shopfronts and a two storey shop and residence at 41-43 Nar Nar Goon-Longwarry Road, site of the historic J and M E Lowndes bakery (most recently operating as Magpie and Stump Bakehouse) and the current Cannibal Creek Bakehouse. DV housing crisis For victims of domestic violence, mustering the courage to leave an abusive household is hard enough in itself, let alone uprooting your life in the search for a safe haven. But now, hundreds of vulnerable victims are being faced with another devastating crisis - a lack of affordable housing.

With the demand for rental properties currently booming and the number of people fleeing domestic violence increasing steadily, countless victims are finding themselves stuck in limbo with nowhere left to go. Across Melbourne’s south east, support services have received thousands of calls for help in the past year and are struggling to keep up with demand.

Robyn Roberts, the General Manager at family violence and housing support service WAYSS, said that they had witnessed a record number of victims reaching out for help since the pandemic had taken hold. “We know family violence is the biggest cause of homelessness for women and children, and during the pandemic women and children have been escaping unsafe situations

and coming to WAYSS in larger numbers than ever before,“ Ms Roberts said. “Our family violence refuges are full and many of our families are not moving because there is nowhere for them to move to,“ she said, adding that many victims remained “in a state of paralysis“ and “stuck in a constant state of crisis“, a worrying trend.
