Pako Festa on the move Pako Festa will be back in 2022, but it will look a lot different to usual with the festival to move from Pakington Street. Multicultural organisation Diversitat has announced the 40th street festival will be shifted away from its traditional home to the Northern Community Hub in Norlane due to COVID-19 requirements. The festival will include the traditional food stalls, a celebration of diverse cultures, entertainment and a new twist on the traditional parade. The parade was cancelled for the first time in its history in 2021, with a reduced format showcasing different cuisines and entertainment around Geelong taking its place.
Diversitat chief executive Joy Leggo said moving back to have the community come together in one place for the festival was the perfect way to celebrate Pako Festa’s 40th anniversary. “We are thrilled to mix things up next year and offer a new twist on what has always proven to be a very successful public event for Geelong,” she said. “Next year we will feature a large stage with a ‘traditional costume catwalk’ to allow our communities to proudly show off their colourful cultures to the wider communities of Geelong.” Ms Leggo said using the Northern Community Hub would allow for a safe but fun event.
“The format for this ‘new look’ event strikes the right balance – it’s one big celebration at a key site for Geelong’s diverse communities, while still ensuring that we can run a safe event that complies with all state government requirements.” Sharing the news on social media, the Pako Festa committee said it wasn’t possible to hold the festival safely on the streets as usual, but the change in format wouldn’t be permanent. “We can’t wait to get the event back to Pakington Street – hopefully in 2023 – as soon as the regulations and restrictions ease, we intend to bring it back to its original location. “Change is inevitable these days and with COVID-19 and vaccinations playing a key role in public facing events, we need to ensure that
safety is our number one priority for all event patrons.” The Northern Community Hub is a significant location for Geelong’s diverse communities, with the federal government establishing the British Migrant Hostel on the site in mid-1940s. “In many ways, we see this as Pako Festa returning home, back to a significant site for Geelong’s diverse communities and a location that allows us many possibilities,” Ms Leggo said. Pako Festa will be held on February 26. To mark the 40th Pako Festa, 40 portraits featuring Geelong’s diverse communities will be hung in Market Square , while the Pakington Street arts trail will also return for 2022.

Police charge man over shooting By Ash Bolt Armed Crime Squad detectives have arrested and charged a man following a non-fatal shooting in Bell Park earlier this month. Special Operations Group officers assisted detectives in executing a search warrant at a Britannia Street, Geelong West address about 2.45pm last Friday. A 27-year-old man was arrested at the address and later interviewed by detectives. The Geelong West man was charged with aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, attempted aggravated carjacking,
possessing firearm while prohibited and theft. He was remanded to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday, but did not appear and did not apply for bail. The charges stemmed from an incident outside a Carissa Mews property where a 40-year-old Bell Park man was shot in the upper and lower body about 4.50pm on Sunday, December 12. Police allege the victim was at home sitting on his couch when the accused entered with a firearm and demanded he handed over money and jewellery. While in the house, the accused allegedly fired a shot into a wardrobe door.
The pair then left the property and entered a vehicle in front of the property. It was alleged the accused put down the gun before the pair began to scuffle, where a shot was fired through the car window and hit the victim in the chest and shoulder. The accused then allegedly fled on foot after being unable to start the car. He was allegedly caught on CCTV running through a park before getting into another car and leaving. The victim was then found in his front yard by neighbours, who provided first aid until emergency services arrived. Police said the man had suffered two wounds, to his upper and lower body, and was
Playdates for Lara dogs at new park Dogs and their owners will be able to make the most of the summer weather at a newly opened dog park at Hovells Creek Reserve in Lara. Greater Geelong councillor and Lara resident Kylie Grzybek said the city was pleased to open the new dog park just in time for Christmas. “Dog ownership has boomed across Greater Geelong as the isolation of lockdowns prompted residents to seek canine companionship and welcomed furry friends into their homes as life-long family members,” she said. “There are nearly 3000 registered dogs and their owners in Lara alone so we expect the park will be very popular. “I’m proud our new park provides a safe and secure space for our furry friends to run around and play with other pets.” The Greater Geelong region has one of the largest animal populations of any Victorian municipality, with almost 38,000 dogs and cats registered in 2021. The Lara facility is the third fenced dog park for Greater Geelong, joining existing facilities in Corio and Belmont. Additional dog parks in the region are proposed for Aldershot Reserve in St Albans Park and on the Bellarine. Fellow councillor Anthony Aitken said the new park included a dog training area, seating, parking and new trees. “Lara residents told us they wanted to see more pet-friendly spots around the neighbourhood so we’ve responded with a fantastic new park where dogs can run around and play in a safe environment,” Cr Aitken said “Pet ownership is so good for our physical and mental health and I look forward to seeing local dogs and their owners enjoying the facilities and making new friends.” A drinking fountain featuring original artwork by Wadawurrung traditional owner and artist Billy-Jay O’Toole has been installed at the site in partnership with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Barwon Water. “My artwork depicts the importance of caring for country to encourage all to look and deeply listen to country to respect, appreciate and take care of Wadawurrung Country,” Mr O’Toole said.
in hospital in a serious but stable condition. The accused was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in April next year. While executing the warrant at the Britannia Street home, police also charged a 28-year-old Geelong man with possessing a drug of dependence. He was bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates Court in April next year. A third man was also arrested at the address on Friday but was released without charge. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Overdue library fines gone Overdue library fines are a thing of the past, with Geelong Regional Libraries announcing this month it was scrapping the fines for good. The library service said it was “joining a worldwide movement of public libraries which have abolished library fines” as a method to get more people using libraries. “We recognise that library fines are a financial barrier for some people to be able to engage with the library and continue to be active library members,” it said. “Removing fines removes a barrier to participation, which is good for the community, and good for the library. “Ultimately, fines are contrary to the core purpose of public libraries – to provide free and universal access to information.” The library said any existing overdue book fines had been automatically wiped from library members’ accounts and no fines would be accrued going forward. However to ensure everyone has access to items, borrowed items will still have due dates and instead of fines, people that don’t return items in time could have their borrowing privileges revoked. Fines will still apply for damaged or lost books. This week will be the last week of operation for the year for most of the region’s libraries, which will close at 5pm Friday and reopen on Tuesday, January 4. However some libraries will continue to operate over the Christmas period. The libraries in Torquay, Ocean Grove, Corio, Bannockburn and Geelong will be open from 9am-5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in between Christmas and New Year. The Corio, Geelong and Torquay libraries will also be open for their normal hours on Sunday, January 2.

Summer water restrictions ‘unlikely’: Barwon Water Water restrictions likely won’t be needed in the region over the summer, with water storages in good shape for the short term according to Barwon Water’s latest Annual Water Outlook. Barwon Water managing director Tracey Slatter said storage levels were in the best shape for this time of year in more than a decade, sitting at nearly 100 per cent full at the start of summer. She said the likelihood of restrictions in the Geelong, Golden Plains, Bellarine and Surf Coast supply system rated as “very rare”. “West Barwon Reservoir, home to the region’s main catchment located in the Otways, spilled for the first time in seven years, while
Lal Lal Reservoir, in the Moorabool catchment, also started spilling for a second year in a row in August,” she said. Ms Slatter said even though storages were in good shape coming into summer it was important everyone followed the state’s permanent water saving rules, which helped ensure Victorians used water more efficiently. “We know that while storages are at high levels now, the situation can change quickly,” she said. “During the Millennium Drought, and even more recently during the 2015-2016 El Niño and the hot dry start to 2019, we saw water storages can draw down rapidly. “While it has mostly been a wet 12 months
for our region, historically we have seen a 32 per cent drop in average in inflows at West Barwon Reservoir since 1997.” Ms Slatter said with the climate becoming warmer and drier, in the future we would no longer be able to rely on rainfall alone to secure supplies. Instead being more efficient with water use, using recycled water where possible and augmenting water supply with non-climate dependent sources will become more important. The directions are outlined in Barwon Water’s draft Water for our Future Strategy, which is open for public comment until
January 10. Twenty-four actions are proposed over the next five years in the draft Water for our Future Strategy, including extending the reach of the Melbourne-Geelong Pipeline so that it can supply more, allowing water to be returned to the Moorabool River for Traditional Owner cultural values and environmental needs, as well as continuing proactive programs such as increased use of recycled water on the Bellarine, smart networks in Apollo Bay and Birregurra, and water efficiency programs with residential customers, businesses and schools. Pianist wanted for choir The Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir is on the hunt for a new accompanist as it looks to get back into the swing of things following a disrupted two years. Like many choirs, the Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir has been limited in its ability to perform during the pandemic, as well as getting together to practice. President Bron Elford said the choir was excited to get back performing in 2022. “It hasn’t been an easy time, but we were able to do some in-person catch ups this year, as well as online catch ups,” she said. “While we weren’t able to perform, we were able to use the time to practice the Welsh language for some of our songs … since only one of our members actually speaks Welsh. “We’ve made the most of it, but we’re just really excited to back together and perform again.” However the choir is short an important member, with accompanist Selmo Carreira
returning to his native Portugal with his family. “Selmo was great for the choir and so it is said to see him head back home, but we’re now on the lookout for a pianist to become the new accompanist,” Ms Elford said. “It’s a very important job to play with the choir and we’re keen to find someone to play with us and keep up the momentum we have.” The Geelong Welsh Ladies choir was established in 1998 with a small group of Welsh women and has now grown to almost 30 members. The choir practices each Wednesday night at St Luke’s Church, Highton, and performs several concerts each year. Ms Elford said the choir prided itself on bringing together women of many backgrounds who were keen to share the tradition of Welsh singing. She said anyone interested in joining the choir or becoming the accompanist could contact the choir by email at geelongwelshlc@ gmail.com.
Police plead for road safety Despite spending much of this year in lockdown, Victoria has already surpassed the number of lives lost on Victorian roads in 2020. Victoria Police has launched Operation Roadwise, a statewide road policing effort targeting high-risk driving behaviour over the Christmas period. Police will be out patrolling major arterials and highways to detect dangerous drivers. There will be a focus on impaired driving, with motorists enjoying end-of-year celebrations are urged to think twice before consuming alcohol or drugs. Lockdowns helped drive down crime say police Geelong has seen a significant decrease in crime over the 12 months to September, with almost 13 per cent fewer criminal incidents reported. The latest Crime Statistics Agency data for the 12 months to September showed there were 14,819 criminal incidents recorded across the City of Greater Geelong – a 12.9 per cent decrease on the previous year’s 17,020 incidents. The drop was led by large decreases in drug and property offences. Thefts dropped by almost 20 per cent while drug possession offences dropped by almost one-third. However there was an increase in crimes against the person, with a three per cent increase in the number of assaults recorded
– up to 1838 incidents, the most recorded in Greater Geelong over 12 months over the past 10 years. Sexual assaults also increased, up to 400 incidents recorded from 359 the previous year. Geelong Police Superintendent Peter Ward said the figures were influenced by the lockdowns at the end of 2020 and this year. “It’s really encouraging to see a significant drop in the number of criminal incidents in the Geelong region, but we know this is largely due to strict stay-at-home restrictions that were in place at this time, which limited people’s movement,” he said. “Reductions in property and drug offences
were largely linked to the fact many people spent more time at home, and retail and shopping outlets were closed for a large portion of this time. Key drivers were drops in property damage, residential aggravated and non-aggravated burglaries, drug possession and drug trafficking. The driving force behind the increase in crimes against a person was a jump in both sexual offences and non-family violence-related serious assaults. “Sexual offences were largely driven by online offending as people spent more time in front of computers and other devices during lockdowns. In addition, victims are showing more confidence in police when it comes
to reporting sexual offending, which also contributed to the increase. “We know serious assaults are often alcohol induced and we urge all community members to drink responsibly, particularly over the festive period.” Central Geelong had the most criminal incidents recorded in the city, with 1981 incidents, although it saw an 11 per cent decrease on the previous year. The number of family violence incidents increased, with 4210 incidents reported to police. Crime also dropped in Queenscliffe, with just 72 criminal incidents recorded across the year.

Contractor splashes in By Ash Bolt A “first-class“ aquatic centre in Geelong’s north is a step closer, after council appointed a contractor to build to Northern Aquatic and Community Hub. The facility will be built by Kane Constructions, with construction expected to begin in early 2022 and be completed by late-2023. Mayor Stephanie Asher said the appointment of a contractor was an important step towards delivery of the major project. “The Northern Aquatic and Community Hub will deliver state-of-the-art facilities to support future growth and demand in the Northern Geelong growth corridor and make Norlane a regional destination for health and
wellbeing experiences,” she said. “I’m delighted that we are one step closer to delivering on this vital infrastructure to support this thriving community.” The city has contributed almost $45 million to the facility, with state government chipping in $8.5 million and the federal government $8.26 million. Windermere ward councillor Anthony Aitken said he was thrilled the project was another step closer to getting off the ground. “After many years spent advocating for it, I’m so pleased that residents in the north will be getting first-class aquatic, wellbeing and community facilities,” Cr Aitken said. “This landmark project is not only our best chance to address significant health issues experienced by residents in the north,
it demonstrates to this community that we really do care – it’s a beacon of hope.” Co-located with Barwon Health North, there will be an opportunity for the Northern Aquatic and Community Hub to explore complementary health and wellbeing services. “The Northern Aquatic and Community Hub is great for our local community,” Lara MP John Eren said. “It will deliver state-of-the-art facilities to support local residents and also be great for local jobs, expecting to deliver 128 jobs during construction.” The Northern Aquatic and Community Hub is anticipated to attract 600,000 visits every year, delivering $111 million in preventative health benefits during its first decade of operation alone.
Detectives from the Geelong Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses to two separate incidents in which teenagers were allegedly attacked last week. In one incident in North Geelong on Friday night, a 15-year-old Bell Park boy was alleged stabbed after being confronted by two men in an alleyway alongside Separation Street about 11pm. The boy suffered injuries to his upper body that required surgery and is recovering in hospital. Police said both alleged offenders were males aged about 18 years old. One man was described as of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, about 175cm tall and a medium build. He was wearing a blue jumper, black pants and white shoes. The second man was of Caucasian appearance, wearing a blue and red zip-up jumper, a white shirt, black or grey pants and riding a black bicycle. Police are also looking for witnesses to an alleged assault in Rock O’Cashel Lane about 7.20pm on Thursday. Three 15-year-old girls were allegedly kicked and punched by several female teenagers, before one had their phone stolen. The victims, all from Ocean Grove, managed to run away and alerted emergency services to the incident. They were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Police arrested a 15-year-old Corio girl and a 14-year-old St Albans girl shortly after and located an allegedly stolen mobile phone in the Corio girl’s possession. Police are still searching for the other girls. Investigators are appealing for anyone with dash cam footage, CCTV or information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au. Ash Bolt
New social housing promised to satisfy soaring demand The state government has committed to providing more social and affordable housing in Geelong to meet increased demand. Housing Minister Richard Wynne visited Ormond Road in Geelong East on Saturday to announce a $21.6 million upgrade of the precinct as part of the state government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build project. The Ormond Road upgrade is expected to provide 27 new social housing homes, increasing the “much needed housing options” for people at risk of homelessness, women and children escaping family violence and Aboriginal Victorians, Mr Wynne said.
“The announcement of funding for the Ormond Road housing precinct is an important milestone in this incredible investment in new homes across the state,” he said. “The development will provide more social and affordable housing for those who need it most, which is great news for the Geelong community. “Our Big Housing Build is providing a roof over their head for Victorians who need it and create thousands of local jobs, supporting our state’s economic recovery.” The project, which is expected to create
194 local jobs, is also planned to provide 27 affordable homes, providing new options for Geelong residents of Geelong looking for rentals. The new homes will replace the 18 existing ageing social housing homes at the site. Consultation on the masterplan with current residents and other stakeholders has started and construction is anticipated to be completed by 2024. Geelong MP Christine Couzens said the project would address the housing needs of Geelong. “This investment will make a real difference,
providing people with the safety and security of social and affordable housing and helping build a strong local community,” she said. The Ormond Road properties are part of the 12,000 new homes that will be built across the state under the Big Housing Build project, which is expected to increase the social housing supply by 10 per cent and create 40,000 jobs over four years. A minimum of $180 million of the project’s $5.3 billion budget has been allocated to projects across the City of Greater Geelong. Ash Bolt Friday, 24 December, 2021 GEELONG INDEPENDENT 5

Tender let for green hub By Ash Bolt Work on a new piece of social infrastructure to support the growing Armstrong Creek population is set to begin, with the City of Greater Geelong awarding the tender for a new community hub. Councillors last week awarded the $11.45 million construction contract for the Armstrong Creek West Community Hub to Fairbrother Pty Ltd. The hub, which will be built on the corner of Unity Drive and Sovereign Drive, will include a kindergarten for 66 children, a three-year-old kinder, an outdoor playground area, Maternal Child Health consulting rooms, a family support consulting room, flexible community spaces, accessible toilets and a kitchenette. The facility will complement the nearby $595,000 city-funded Mount Duneed Community Shed on Sovereign Drive that is

under construction. Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the community hub would become a treasured place for Armstrong Creek West residents. “The pandemic has highlighted just how important it is to have somewhere for the community to make friends, learn skills and receive family support,” she said. “With the Armstrong Creek area growing at such a rapid rate, the council is committed to delivering vital infrastructure that the community needs.” Kardinia Ward councillor Ron Nelson said the Armstrong Creek West Community Hub would be a welcoming space for people of all ages. “I’m excited to see this hub become a reality for Armstrong Creek West because it will create a deeper connection between residents, defending against the isolation that’s been experienced during the pandemic,” Cr Nelson
said. “Council is very proud to contribute $10.7 million to get this worthy project up and running.” The project also received $2.25 million from the state government, which South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said would help construct a facility that was “very much needed in this rapidly growing area”. “The Armstrong Creek and Mount Duneed region is a fantastic place to live, work and play, and quality learning and community facilities like this help keep it that way,” he said. “The services, including a kindergarten, maternal health rooms, family support services and community spaces will be greatly enjoyed by the community.” The city appointed Perkins Architects to design the facility in 2019, with the new building expected to be have a five-star green star rating for its sustainability for both design and construction.
Surf Coast Shire Council has committed to using federal government funding to improve safety at the Blackgate Road-Horseshoe Bend Road intersection. An upgrade of the intersection is the shire’s highest priority road project given it provides an important connection between Torquay, Barwon Heads and Armstrong Creek and has seen increasing traffic. Council resolved at its December meeting to nominate the intersection upgrade project as part of its funding allocation in the federal government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. The improvement works would feature the installation of an innovative compact roundabout with safety features for all transport modes, including cyclists. The total project cost is $752,120, with Surf Coast shire to chip in $50,000. Councillor Adrian Schonfelder said a recent road safety audit recommended a roundabout as the best long-term treatment. The federal government will now assess the intersection upgrade project against eligibility requirements, and if approved, the project must be completed by mid-2023. The shire is also seeking community feedback on its Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2022-2027 and its Safer Cycling Strategy. People can help shape the plans by providing input at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/ yoursay before January 5.

Work to start on Drysdale pool By Ash Bolt Work is set to start soon on a new outdoor pool in Drysdale, with City of Greater Geelong councillors last week awarding the tender for the project’s first stage. Construction will begin early next year after councillors awarded the tender for the $15.5 million North Bellarine Aquatic and Leisure Centre to Kane Constructions. The project, which received $10 million from the federal government, includes a 50-metre, eight-lane heated outdoor pool.
Mayor Stephanie Asher said awarding the tender was a milestone in the project, with the pool expected to be open in about 12 months. “For too long the Bellarine community has had less access to aquatic facilities than other areas of Greater Geelong, so we’re thrilled that construction can get under way in the new year,“ Cr Asher said. “Kane will use local sub-contractors and source a large proportion of goods and services through local businesses.” Geelong-based senator Sarah Henderson said the federal government was pleased to
support a new facility for the Bellarine. “Supported by $10 million from the Morrison government, I am delighted that construction of stage one of the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre will soon be under way,” she said. “The 50-metre outdoor heated pool will be a wonderful asset for local residents, including thousands of students who attend local schools.” The design of the stage one outdoor facility was completed by Mantric Architecture in September. It features all-abilities change facilities, an entry pavilion, a kiosk, tiered
covered seating, a landscaped community lawn area with umbrellas, more than 100 trees, and parking for 60 cars. A scoping study showed the outdoor facility is expected to be visited by more than 34,000 people each year. Usage of the outdoor pool is expected to will grow steadily, with the population of the Bellarine Peninsula forecast to grow by 40 per cent to about 70,000 residents by 2041. Feedback on the stage two proposal closes on Tuesday, January 4.
Sharing fire knowledge A pilot training program will see members of the Wadawurrung community develop their fire management skills and share their knowledge of traditional burning with fire management specialists in the region. The training was designed by Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and will be delivered for the first time this month. Twelve members of the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation began training at Anglesea earlier this month, building their capacity to use planned fire for cultural practices on public and private land. The training aims to combine the fire knowledge of FFMVic and the Wadawurrung community, who are the traditional owners of the land around Geelong and the Otways, as one of the first steps to reintroducing traditional burning. FFMVic Otway district manager David
Roberts said there was a lot of knowledge traditional owners had to share with firefighters. “We’re committed to increasing community capacity to carry out cultural burning, and this training is another step towards managing Country in partnership with traditional owners,” he said. “We know that fire has always been a part of the Victorian landscape. As such, we value the wealth of cultural fire knowledge held by traditional owners and this opportunity to exchange insights around fire.” Based on a nationally accredited firefighter training course, the program covers a range of topics such as fire behaviour, fire suppression and ecological outcomes and acknowledges that traditional owners used fire as a tool to manage the land for tens of thousands of years. On completion, participants will be accredited to attend FFMVic planned burns, paving the way to lead their own cultural planned burns in the future.

Don’t travel to high risk areas on Extreme Fire Danger Rating days. If you plan to travel through Victoria, during fire season, it’s important to check the Fire Danger Rating every day. If the rating is Extreme or above, avoid travelling to high risk areas, including to cities and towns.

THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE PER AB ABC TV, Christmas Day, 7.40pm 7.
CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT Nine, Christmas Eve, 8pm
While a lot has changed since Carols by Candlelight began in 1938 as a way to bring people, including the less fortunate, together to celebrate carols and the Christmas spirit, the old-school tunes haven’t changed one bit. The rest of it? Well, the glitz and glamour of the production is a lot more fancy and tightly orchestrated, but the festive feeling remains. Live from Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl, hosts David Campbell and Allison Langdon (both pictured) are joined by old favourites including Marina Prior and Anthony Callea, along with the Melbourne Gospel Choir.
In Australia, we have Christmas sspecials with breakfast-TV presenters taking to the stage along with some of our best musical talent. You won’t see our prime minister popping up in the crowd. In the UK, the ann annual Royal Variety Performance an is another spectacular festive event, w this one, you can spot royal but with fami in the exuberant audience. family s For some, spying a sequined Kate t and tuxedo-clad William makes it all the m more exciting, not to mention the ffamous performers. Bill Bailey, Jame Blunt, Elvis Costello, Sir Rod James Stew and Ed Sheeran all take to Stewart the sstage, with cheeky comedian Alan Carr (pictured) playing host.

American police procedurals are reliably slick affairs, and there’s arguably no one better to create one than Dick Wolf, the veteran producer of the prolific Law & Order franchise, as well as this engaging series. While viewers can expect a crime to be committed and then enthrallingly solved by a bunch of world-weary police investigators, this series stands out from the pack in Australia because of its stars. Boasting American heartthrob Kellan Lutz (Twilight), it also features Aussie Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck) and Kiwi-Aussie Keisha CastleHughes (Whale Rider). In “Unhinged”, Hana (Castle-Hughes, pictured) rejoins the team and experiences a raft of new adjustments as an arson case leads to a decades-old secret.
This sweet and inspired spin-off from The Big Bang Theory is nothing like its predecessor and, as we round out season four, it’s a comedy that has always harboured a quiet confidence. We bid adieu to the season with “The Wild and Woolly World of Nonlinear Dynamics”, and fans can look forward to more family friendly, slightly quirky drama with season five waiting, along with more lively episode titles. Expect high drama for Sheldon (Iain Armitage, pictured) and his household when Missy’s (Raegan Revord) first heartbreak triggers a series of events that lead every member of the Cooper family to the brink. Fans of the original show might have an inkling of what’s to come. Prepare for an unsettling conclusion.

Top marks for the class of 2021 By Ash Bolt Living away from his family for the past two years throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has paid off for a Geelong College year 12 student, who received the region’s highest ATAR score. Edison Hang, who has boarded at the school for the last two years and has been unable to go back to see family in China, was named dux of Geelong College last week after receiving an ATAR of 99.80. Edison said he was surprised by his score when it was released last week. “I do feel like it was over my expectation but I’m pretty happy,” he said. “When I saw the score, I was really excited, especially about my English results, I wasn’t expecting a [study score of] 41. Even though it was hard because I wasn’t able to go home for the past two years, I’m grateful for the support of my teachers, tutors and especially my host family.” Along with his study score of 41 out of 50 for English, Edison also received study scores of 49 for mathematics methods, 47 for specialist maths and 43 for chemistry. He also got a perfect score of 50 for further maths in 2020 as a year 11 student. Edison said his secret to success was to always ask questions. “When I arrived, I asked a lot of questions and I felt encouraged by my teachers to keep asking, so I did and I’m sure that’s one of the reasons I did well,” he said. “It’s something that everyone can do.” Edison said it had been hard being away from family over the past two years, but he had enjoyed his time in the region. “My parents were really encouraging, even though we only connected through technology, it did stop me from feeling too isolated,” he said. “I’m also grateful for my own self-discipline.
Geelong College dux Edison Hang received the region’s highest ATAR score.
I wanted to do well so I had to make sacrifices and make study a habit. Now I love studying and I’m happy with myself for that. “The teachers and students have been so kind and offered so much help with academics … this kindness changed my attitude towards Australia, it made me love it so much more than I ever thought I would.” Edison has plans to return home over the summer, but he will study pure maths and specialist sciences at the University of Melbourne next year. “After that I’m considering a lot of things, I’d like to contribute through technology, like being a rocket scientist but also maybe an

economist,” he said. Edison was one of six students at Geelong College to receive ATARs over 99, along with Skye Ellis, who received a score of 99.70. Skye has plans to move to the US next year to study biomedical engineering at Northwestern University in Chicago, where she received a cross-country scholarship. “I was very surprised when I woke up [on Thursday], but pleasantly surprised,” she said. “I’m really excited to be going to Northwestern, I’m leaving in August, and I can’t wait to work with the team and all their incredible facilities and see what I can achieve both in running and in academics.”
There were many other notable achievements around the region. Kami Jaan was Northern Bay College’s dux and also achieved the highest single subject study score in the school’s history with a perfect 50 in VET sport and recreation. Clonard College dux Charlotte Fogarty scored a 99.25 with perfect study scores in biology and psychology, while Sacred Heart College had five students receive ATARs over 99, including dux Stephanie Reed, who received a 99.45. Other students that received scores over 99 included St Joseph’s College’s Jarrod Zanardo (99.10), Geelong Grammar School’s Skyler Waring (99.60) and Kardinia International College’s Nayoun Chung (99.65). Across the state, 50,723 graduated with their VCE – a completion rate of more than 98 per cent – while another 14,066 received their VCAL certificate, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. There were 13,935 students across the state who achieved at least one study score of 40 or more in a subject, which Education Minister James Merlino said showed the resilience of students in the unprecedented times. “VCE and VCAL graduates are impressive every year – but the class of 2021, completing their final years of school during a global pandemic, are particularly inspiring. Congratulations to every single student right across Victoria,” he said. “I thank teachers, school staff and families, whose support through the last two, difficult years has played a huge role in the success of this year’s VCE and VCAL students. “Whether it’s a university course, TAFE, an apprenticeship or getting straight into the workforce, I wish our year 12s the very best with whatever comes next after a fun and relaxing summer break.”

Non-finalised pleas at Geelong County Court have remained level on 26 between January 27, 2020 and January 27, 2021, with 80 pleas finalised between those dates. The Productivity Commission’s Report on Government Services (Justice) shows that pending criminal matters in the Magistrates Court of Victoria have increased by 82 per cent from 2014-15 to 2019-20. The Magistrates Court of Victoria did not provide caseload statistics on Geelong Magistrates Court in response to the Independent’s inquiries earlier this week. Following the suspension of in-person circuit sittings, the County Court of Victoria implemented a new process for regional matters. Under the process, all pleas and appeals against sentences are provided with a fixed listing date upon committal or appeal lodgement. “The majority of these matters were conducted virtually using video conferencing software, with appearances in court permitted under limited circumstances,” a court spokesperson said. “This has reduced the delay for these types of matters.”

Attention to detail is part of the service A leading independent workshop in Geelong, BJT Automotive has established a solid reputation as a reliable and thorough workshop with exceptional customer service. Owner Brett Turley says the high standards they pride themselves on mean they are an excellent alternative to dealership servicing. “We are renowned for our fussiness and attention to detail, and that’s exactly how we like it,” he says. “To ensure our mechanical services are cutting edge and up to date we are constantly refreshing and improving our mechanics’ skills and knowledge.” Personalised service is front and centre at BJT Automotive as well. Brett and his team offer a loan car and courtesy car service and like to get an understanding of each customer and car. “Our mechanics take note and listen. They’re thorough and keep extensive records of each service. This means we’re aware of wear, tear and potential issues. “And regular log book servicing results in a better sale price when it comes time to sell.” Brett says that prices are very competitive, and customers can trust that any parts used will always maintain their new car warranties. He also has some advice for anyone who’s about to buy or sell a car. “We encourage them to talk to us first. We are VicRoads roadworthy testers, able to issue roadworthy certificates, and offer comprehensive pre-purchase car inspections.” As well as tyre fitting, the workshop carries out a range of mechanical services, with Holden, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Suzuki covered. BJT Automotive, 8 Maxwell Avenue, Belmont. Opens 8am-5.30pm Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 5244 3337 or www.bjtautomotive.com.au

A night of finals upsets LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers It was finals night on Thursday as the Spring Triples competition reached its conclusion, and it was a night of upsets. In Section 1 Highton’s Night Owls followed up its win during the season with another 4-2 win over ladder leader Grovedale. The first two sets were split with Grovedale taking the doubles 6-2 and Brain Spong taking the singles 6-1 for Highton. Highton followed up taking the second doubles 6-3, but Jared Bromley put Grovedale a game ahead with his 6-1 win in the second singles. In the final two sets Highton sealed the win with 6-3 and 6-4 wins in the doubles and singles respectively. Section 2 was billed to be a close affair, with only three points separating ladder leader The Flying Dankanators and Grovedale. The teams played twice through the season, with the Dankanators winning 5-1 in round three, but Grovedale levelled the score with a one game win after with the sets split in round six. Thursday’s match started close, with Grovedale taking the first doubles in a tie

break, while Tom Wright got the first singles 6-1 for the Dankanators. From there Grovedale took the final sets sets, but it didn’t have it all its own way with two of the sets going to a tie break. Tennis Geelong’s Cockatoo’s finished the season two points ahead of second placed All Saints Red in Section 3, but that didn’t stop Red from taking a commanding win five sets to one in the final. Tom Kouvenoord, James Dat and Elaine Ly stormed through the first five sets, with Hayden Baker taking the one set for the Cockatoo’s in the final set.
The closest final was in Section 4 where the Riatta Bobcats clawed out a one game win while level on sets with Cocobewares. The Bobcats would have been confident going into the match, with a 5-1 win in their round five match, however, they found much tougher opposition this week. After the first two sets, the match was tied with David McCollough and James Hayes taking the doubles 6-4 for the Bobcats, while Brad Walker took his singles 6-4 for Cocobewares. Walker backed up his singles win partnering with Steven Arto to take the second doubles 6-2, giving his team a two game lead, after James Hayes took his singles 6-4 for the Bobcats. Unfortunately for the Cocobewares, it was unable to hold the lead, when James Hayes and Ambrose McIntyre blasted a 6-0 win for the Bobcats, which was enough to overcome Steven Arto taking the final set for Cocobewares 6-3, to give the Bobcats the win by a game. Highton scored a second premiership in Section 5, with a 5-1 win over Jazza Gals. The Highton team was the strongest team through the season, and continued its form into the final, where it proved far too strong for the opposition and lost only eight games for the night.

Cats are on track for new season Geelong has shown its on track to make improvements in the upcoming AFLW season, with a 23-point win over Richmond in its first practice match at the weekend. With less than a month until the start of the season, Geelong showed the changes it had made to its game plan to lead from start to finish against the Tigers in warm conditions away from home on Saturday. The Cats claimed the 6.12 (48) to 3.7 (25) on the back of three goals from veteran forward Phoebe McWilliams, who led a more potent forward line for the Cats. Former number one draft pick Nina Morrison said the team had made obvious strides since last year. “A big focus for us off the back of last year was to have that consistency across all four quarters,” she said. “It was a really solid hit out to start with. A lot of stuff that we’ve improved on from last year, [we have] a lot of clarity around the way
we want to play, but certainly [there is] lots to improve on as well. “I think the girls are just really stoked to get into it. We’ll have some really clear things we need to work on over the next couple of weeks and I think we’ll all be pumped come round one against North.” Morrison was playing her first game in almost two years after a second ACL injury in March 2020 and did not look out of place. “It was awesome; it was good to get a proper run around,” she said. “I feel like I’ve been ready to go for a while, so it was nice to actually get out there and play. “The body is good. I started cramping up pretty badly late in the game, but it was good to have a proper hit out and I’ll be good to go round one.” Improvements in the forward line were key to the Cats’ victory, with the team struggling to hit the scoreboard last season. While the Cats were inaccurate in front of
goals, Morrison said the team took positives out of its 18 scoring shots. “A key focus coming into the year is to generate those scoring opportunities and keep the ball inside 50,” she said. “I think we can clean up a few of those entries and make them easier shots at goal, but to have that many coming in is good signs going forward.” The game started tight, with the Cats holding a small lead at half time, but turned up the pressure in the third quarter to kick away from the Tigers. Along with the forward pressure, the Cats’ tackling intensity was also noticeable, with Morrison and new Cats Rachel Kearns and Georgie Prespakis showing a willingness to lay tackles. The Cats kick off their season against North Melbourne at Arden Street on January 8.
Land-based fishing a great holiday activity ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos Inside Corio Bay continues to have plenty of fishing options at the moment for all land-based anglers with the waterfront and St Helens Rocks both giving up some nice fish. Over the holidays in Geelong pretty much every land-based platform across the waterfront is going to be a fantastic area to take the kids and family for a fish. With pinky snapper, flathead, salmon, trevally and whiting all holding in the area it keeps the fishing options open. Fishing with baits such as pipies and bluebait is going to be the best method to getting some fish on the board and soft plastics are well worth throwing around too for the more aggressive fish. Clifton Springs has still been fishing alright for calamari and whiting, towards Hermsley has been the more productive area. For the whiting fishing the tide changes have been the go with pipies as bait, when chasing the squid anywhere from two to four metres of water with size 2.5 or 3.0 jigs. Offshore Barwon Heads has still had a few tuna reports come in, they aren’t going crazy just yet but the fish are definitely out there and in decent numbers. Anglers trolling small skirted lures have been having some good success and so too are fishos casting lures into the schools of fish. Maria pop queens are a favourite for the local tuna. Snapper are still going berserk offshore and they’re everywhere. The 50 metre line seems to be the most productive depth if you’re chasing a feed of pan sized fish and in shallower producing the better quality fish with some reaching over 9kg. Drifting with paternoster rigs and fresh squid has been by far the standout rig and bait. There has also been quite a bit of by-catch whilst chasing the snapper including nannygai, gummy shark and even some rat kingfish. Wurdi Buloc Reservoir has still continued to produce some nice fish or anglers casting off the rock walls with redfin and trout both in good numbers and hungry. Casting spoon style lures to cover more water has been very productive, especially for the redfin.
