2021 presented challenges beyond anything most of us could have predicted - but through it all, our dedicated SES volunteers were there to support us. The Pakenham SES Unit faced a number of horror accidents at the beginning of the year, with the region’s roads tragically claiming many lives. Despite the difficulties of the Covid-19 pandemic and numerous lockdowns, these volunteers were always out there on the frontline with fellow emergency service responders, helping those in need - but after the wave of accidents came even more emergencies. Two severe weather events that no-one anticipated stormed into town in the middle
one agency we called to help us - you guessed it, the SES. Emerald SES volunteers risked their lives to help during the storm, when one of their response vehicles was crushed by a falling tree. It very easily could have ended in tragedy if the volunteers were in the car at the time - but thankfully, they escaped unscathed. Throughout the year, thousands of calls for help were received across the district and the volunteers gave up work hours, family time and annual leave to be there to help when residents were at their must vulnerable. For these reasons, the members of both the Pakenham and Emerald SES Units are being honoured by the Gazette as the 2021 People of the Year. Head to page 2 and 3 for our full tribute
