Work site stink builds
Wife’s cooking the key
Pakenham residents in Quinella Way say they have put up with an unpleasant odour in their backyards for months, which they believe is coming from a Racecourse Road construction site next door. A toilet block for the tradespeople working on the Mercure Hotel build was established only three metres from Jenny James and Dorothy Wilby’s back fences, which on a warm day omits an unmistakable manure smell. Councillor’s shock death Shocked friends and colleagues have hailed former City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon for her “incredible” and “tireless” community work. The 58-year-old former councillor - who had been rocked by an IBAC inquiry into Casey councillors - was found dead in a car in Stringybark Drive about 12.30pm on Tuesday 18 January. Ms Stapledon was widely admired as a strong, unstinting community voice, especially for disability and carer issues. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the family. STORIES PAGES 7-9

Dalmore centenarian Michele ‘Mick’ Ventura credits wife, Maria, for reaching triple figures. Maria cooks all of Mick’s food, just as he likes it, and he has long been very reluctant to accept others’ cooking. The pair’s, hailing from Sicily, Italy have been married for 71 years and have lived on the same property for well over 50 years. The bread is homemade, fruit and vegetables have almost always been grown on the 112 acre property and when it is not, it is purchased from the farmers’ market and any serving of meat he eats, has to have been freshly killed by him. “I’m a fussy eater,” Mick admits several times throughout the interview, as he won’t eat anything with preservatives and prefers his native cuisine.
