Blow for businesses The Cardinia Crime Investigation Unit is investigating a number of burglaries in Beaconsfield shops that took place on Sunday afternoon, 20 February. The thieves took electronics and damaged the offices of UPmarket Real Estate and the Beaconsfield Podiatry Clinic on Old Princes Highway, putting a hole in the wall between the two businesses to access them. UPmarket had only moved into the office space in recent weeks, according to business directors Peter Monga and Garry Sahni. STORY PAGE 2

School fined over death

The death of a staff member at Haileybury’s Berwick campus in 2018 has resulted in a fine in excess of $100,000 for the school. A grounds worker who was not wearing a helmet was found dead lying next to a large eucalyptus branch on the school’s grounds with a head wound. The Melbourne County Court heard Haileybury failed to inform employees of the risks associated with cutting a branch from a tree with a chainsaw. STORY PAGE 3

Thousands of dollars have been raised for the McGrath Foundation at the 8th annual Pink Ladies Day hosted by the Pakenham Cricket Club. Tooradin and Pakenham cricket clubs battled for the Annie Porter Shield while the Player of the Match received the Andrea

Berkhout Award on Saturday 19 February. Recent Cardinia Shire Person of the Year and Pakenham Cricket Club president Phil Anning said the namesakes of the trophies were inspiring women with strong connections to the club.

“Both Annie and Andrea are survivors of breast cancer. We named the trophies after them in recognition of their fighting spirit,” he said. “Annie and Andrea have been regular attendees for the eight years we have run this event.” STORY PAGES 22-23

Drive residents don’t want any access to the station from their street. “We don’t want people parking on our nature strips and walking past our home to the station,” he said. “We also don’t want the extra amount of traffic. We need to protect what’s left of the street.” STORY PAGE 3

‘They paved paradise and put up a parking lot’. Just as Joni Mitchell crooned in the hit song Big Yellow Taxi - that’s what Pinehill Drive residents are concerned will happen to their quiet street once the Pakenham East Train Station is built.

Commuters looking for access to the train or looking for a place to park are the primary fears Pinehill Drive residents have when the controversial Pakenham line extension takes place. The residents are hoping Cardinia Shire Council will help them address these concerns as the station build nears a start date.
