Foundation’s new direction

A journey to identity

In a move touted to better support a broad range of local community and service groups, Cardinia Shire Council will re-establish the philanthropic Cardinia Foundation. It comes as the City of Casey withdraws from the joint Casey Cardinia Foundation after nine years. Director Paul Thomas said the board has yet to approve the new direction that will transform the foundation. “There was an argument that we were spreading ourselves too thin and this will hone us in to a smaller territory,” he said. “Cardinia is growing at such a rapid rate so we can concentrate on some significant projects that really can make a difference in the community.” STORY PAGE 13

Sharing your personal story can be a daunting experience but Pakenham’s Miles Wade and mother Simone have taken that leap to help bring awareness and acceptance to transgender children. Miles said he hopes by writing down his story, he can bring more understanding to the wider community about gender and identity. “I feel like the audience of most newspapers are people who are just chilling at home, maybe not teenagers, and they could learn something new,” he said. Mum Simone is also hoping by sharing her experience, she will be able to offer comfort or guidance to other parents in the same position. “I just want to help others,” Simone said. “And I want people to know there’s nothing special or unique or different about us. We’re just a normal family. We’re just going about our life as need to.” Miles and Simone are our People in Profile this week. You can read their story, in their words on pages 10 and 11

Consultation call Calls to reform the process of compulsory acquisition of homes has been heard in the Victorian Parliament, inspired by the “outrageous” handling of several Pakenham East properties last year. Eastern Victoria MP Cathrine Burnett-Wake

has told Parliament that some homeowners were not home when the doorknocking occurred and were instead notified via a latenight phone call, while their neighbours found out via the front page of the newspapers the next morning. “What is shocking about their story is that
