Toxic dump fears raised Rumours that a site at the corner of Bald Hill Road and Five Mile Road Pakenham is being used to dump toxic soil has been raised in Parliament. Eastern Victoria MP Cathrine BurnettWake said she visited locals in the area who believed the site was being used to dispose of the soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project. Ms Burnett-Wake sought clarification on the issue from the Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allen on Thursday 10 March. STORY PAGE 5

Student cave drama retold A Year 9 student from Kooweerup Secondary College has escaped relatively unharmed after becoming trapped in a cave for two and a half hours while on school camp. Ciara Seddon become stuck when she slipped between two rocks while exploring Brittania Creek Cave in Wesburn. Ciara and her father, Nar Nar Goon CFA captain Justin Seddon, have shared what the traumatic experience was like for them both.

The Governor General has recognised three local heroes for their courageous actions as part of the 2022 Australian Bravery Decorations. Pakenham’s Daniel Hudson, Cape Paterson’s Fabio Contu and San Remo’s Troy Joyner are among 49 Australians recognised for their acts of valour. Speaking of the recipients, Governor-Gen-

eral David Hurley said in a press release “no one sets out to be brave. No one really knows how, when presented with a dangerous situation, they will act. The men and women that we are celebrating today acted bravely.” Mr Contu and Mr Joyner are being honoured with both a Commendation for Brave Conduct and a Group Bravery Citation, for their actions during a commercial flight out of Melbourne in 2017 in which a passenger at-

Pakenham’s David Hudson is being acknowledged with a Group Bravery Citation for his response during a flash flood at Wilson’s Promontory National Park in 2011. As a Parks Victoria ranger, Mr Hudson was on the ground, risking his life to ensure the safety of others.
