Valour rewarded By Cam Lucadou-Wells A quick-thinking hero who pulled a dazed driver out of her burning vehicle in Dandenong South has been awarded a Commendation for Brave Conduct. Chris Wilton, from Rowville, had been on his way to work about 6.20am on 3 September 2015 - “half asleep and needing coffee”. When the mechanical engineer saw a multicar crash on Dandenong Bypass near the Hammond Road intersection, things quickly went from “zero to 100”. He spotted a woman, ‘Emily’, still in her car that had slammed into the back of another car and mounted the median strip. “I saw flames coming out of the bonnet,” Mr Wilton said. “I was yelling out of my window for her to get out of the car.” Emily was shocked, frozen under an activated airbag as fire spread under the vehicle. Mr Wilton tried to open the car door but it was jammed. The car was in drive. Mr Wilton had the presence of mind to lean through the window to pull on the handbrake. “Come on, we’ve got to get out of the car,” he urged the driver. He managed to uncouple her seatbelt, grab her under her arms and lift her free of the car. Minutes later, the car was engulfed in flames. Just before emergency services arrived on the scene. Mr Wilton remembered there were a lot of cars around at the time. The drivers of the two other cars were standing on the other side of the bypass, having a chat. “No one else was aware that Emily was in the car,” he said. “I was trying to wave down work utes to put out the fire, but no one pulled over.” Mr Wilton’s clear thinking may well have saved Emily’s life. “As soon as I saw someone in the car, I didn’t

I’d hope it would be what someone else would have done in the same position.” It turned out the crash had been caused by a large part falling from the back of a truck on the road. As far as Mr Wilton knows, the truck and its driver have not been identified.
Regardless, the event was perspectivechanging for Mr Wilton. “It just makes you think that anything can happen at any point.” He’s kept in touch with Emily, checking on her welfare in the months after the crash, and they text each other on the rescue’s anniversary each year. the bravery commendation. “Speaking to her over the years, it’s just like I was in the right place at the right time.” Mr Wilton was one of 46 people announced for Australian Bravery decorations this month. Two bravery lists are recommended to the Governor-General by the Australian Bravery Decorations Council each year.

Traders’ survival doubts Traders say they are worried about their survival in the proposed redevelopment of the iconic Little India precinct. Under the $600 million proposal by Capital Alliance with Development Victoria, Little India’s shops would be shifted to a new laneway between Halpin Way and Foster Street. Construction of that phase is expected to start in 2023, with six stages across other sites in the next 15 years. Little India Traders Association spokesperson Steve Khan said there were concerns that the redevelopment would “break Little India”. There were many questions yet to be answered, he said. Such as the fate of the five businesses demolished in Foster Street during construction of the laneway – would they be relocated, compensated and helped to return to Little India? Mr Khan said traders were worried if they could afford “double or perhaps triple” rents in the new precinct. Some may choose to stay in Foster Street on the current “reasonable” rent level, but risk not being able to find a tenancy in the new precinct. He said it was unknown if the laneway would have enough space for the existing traders. “Another issue is that we’ll have some new competitors moving in.” Mr Khan argues that the State Government has a moral obligation to look after Little India traders who have been in Foster Street for up to 25 years. They survived major upheaval during road closures and works in an earlier phase of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project more than 10 years ago. He says while in opposition in 2013, the state ALP promised traders that “your future was with Labor”. “They said we will be looking after you and make sure everything is sustainable. So
we would like to bind the Premier to that promise.” Mr Khan said developer Capital Alliance had made no assurances or promises to protect traders. According to a State Government release, the new Little India will have more modern facilities and services, and better spaces for tenants. In the seven-stage redevelopment, the lane is being built first to minimise disruption to its traders. The first stage also includes a nearby supermarket, food market hall and residential building off Halpin Way, Gilbert Lane and Thomas Street. Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti said the council would advocate for an “appropriate transition plan to best support our existing traders in the Little India precinct”. The traders would be the “most impacted by the staged redevelopment of the site”, he said. “Council supports the delivery of a new Little India precinct to maintain the strong cultural identity of the precinct and to support our valued traders.” Cr Memeti welcomed the draft masterplan to “transform central Dandenong into a vibrant residential, retail and commercial hub” as well as deliver “significant employment opportunities”. It would “restore central Dandenong as the capital of Melbourne’s South East”, he said. As the 18-year project unfolds, the vision is for at least 470 new dwellings, as well as a 29-storey hotel and conference centre, a school, 29-storey office tower and an outdoor plaza in the precinct. An urban brewery entertainment district and supermarket will be the last stage constructed from 2038. The development area focuses on Foster Street, bounded by Settlers Square, Dandenong train station, Halpin Way, Thomas Street and Cheltenham Road.

Little India’s $600m plan By Cam Lucadou-Wells A draft masterplan to transform Little India precinct with a new retail laneway, shady trees, plaza and towering hotel, office and apartment buildings has been publicly released. Developer Capital Alliance will hold public briefing sessions, starting from 10am Thursday 17 March, on its $600 million project. Capital Alliance founder and chief executive Mohan Du said he was proud to share the draft masterplan to “rejuvenate central Dandenong”. The project would “benefit generations to come”. Under the 15-year staged masterplan, the first stage includes a new home for Little India - a north-south pedestrian-only laneway between Halpin Way and Foster Street. The lane is being built first to minimise disruption to traders. Construction is expected to begin in 2023 subject to government approvals. The first stage also includes a supermarket, food market hall and residential building. According to the developer, the new Little India will have more modern facilities and services, and better spaces for tenants. In total, the redevelopment will occur at seven sites around Foster Street, bounded by Settlers Square, Dandenong train station, Halpin Way, Thomas Street and Cheltenham Road. It includes at least 470 new dwellings, as well as a 29-storey hotel and conference centre, 29-storey office tower and an outdoor plaza on the corner of Foster Street and Cheltenham Road. An urban brewery entertainment district and supermarket will be the last stage constructed from 2038. A community centre near Settlers Square, and an education facility at the corner of Mason and Foster Street will also be built. Large scale retail has been earmarked for Halpin Way and Thomas Streets, as well as east of Dandenong rail station. There’s also plans for tree canopy as well as greening vegetation draping multi-storey buildings and their balconies. More than 2600 jobs during construction and 5000 ongoing jobs are expected to be created. The project is part of the State Government’s Revitalising Central Dandenong program, delivered by Development Victoria. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the project complemented the $15 billion upgrade of the Cranbourne and Pakenham rail lines, including the Metro Tunnel. “We’re not only delivering more trains, more often to Dandenong – we’re delivering more housing, and jobs for this local area. “We encourage locals to have their say on
Shady trees will be part of the dramatically changed streetscapes. the draft masterplan and will continue to work with them on progressing this project – which will transform Dandenong and create thousands of jobs at a time our community needs them most.” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the area was being turned into a “vibrant new neighbourhood with more jobs, housing, entertainment, restaurants and spaces that will be enjoyed by locals well into the future”. The online briefing session is on Thursday 17 March 10am-11am, and in-person briefing sessions on Wednesday 23 March 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm. Lovett jailed over assaults From August-December, Lovett repeatedly ignored bail and intervention orders not to contact the victim until he was arrested and remanded. He resorted to a fake Facebook account and his brother’s phone in his attempts to message and call her. Mr Ong noted the victim’s impact statement in which she described living in “constant fear” with Lovett. Her emotional trauma would outlive the physical injuries and bruises inflicted by him, she told the court. The relationship appeared to be “toxic”, Mr Ong said. A “lifestyle of drugs and alcohol” led to the assaults, but were no excuse. Through his lawyer, Lovett apologised “unreservedly” to the victim and expressed shame and remorse. However in an interview, Lovett made admissions but minimised or denied most of the assaults, Mr Ong noted. “I didn’t do it all, some of it was the victim,” Lovett had said. A psychiatrist report outlined Lovett’s gambling and substance abuse including cocaine and alcohol, as well as a personality disorder. His drug use spiked due to boredom during Covid lockdown. Lovett played 88 games for Essendon between 2005-2009. Since his playing career, he’d upskilled and gained work in the construction industry, including gaining a mobile crane licence and working on the Preston level crossing removal project last year. Lovett was jailed for eight months, including 100 days served in pre-sentence detention. After his stint, he will be placed on a 12-month supervised community corrections order including mental health, drug, alcohol and offender programs.
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Former AFL footballer Andrew Lovett has been jailed for sustained violent attacks against a woman in Berwick. Lovett, 39, had pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to 24 charges, including assaults, intentionally causing injury and persistent breaches of intervention orders spanning nearly two years. Between February 2020 and June 2021, there were 14 episodes of family violence. In sentencing on 17 March, magistrate Jason Ong said it was concerning that Lovett’s family violence “escalated in frequency and seriousness”. “It cannot be tolerated in our society,” he told the court. Lovett was found to have inflicted 10 of the assaults after an intervention order in mid-2020 – meaning it rendered “no protection” to his victim. The “controlling” and “violent” behaviour included Lovett attacking his defenceless partner in the shower in March 2021. He flung her phone in her direction, shattering it against the wall. He then punched her several times to the head, and kicked her stomach while she lay on the floor. She was rendered unconscious, Mr Ong noted. On another occasion, Lovett spat in her face and pushed her backwards causing her head to strike floorboards. Lovett also bruised his victim’s lip after hurling a shoe at her, slammed her face into a steering wheel while driving, and spat in her face, poured beer on her and kicked her on the ground in her bedroom. In mid-2021, Lovett struck her several times to the face, choked her with his hands and then let go, causing her head to strike a bath and she blacked out. She armed herself with a knife to escape her house.
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nineteen drink-drivers and 159 speeders were detected in Greater Dandenong and Casey during a police road-safety blitz across the Labour Day long weekend. During Operation Arid, 26 drug-drivers, 22 drivers who were disqualified, 18 unlicensed and 19 disobeying traffic controls were also detected across the two council areas. They were among more than 7000 traffic offences - including nearly 3000 speeding - in Victoria during the four-day operation from 11-14 March. More than 1100 unauthorised drivers were detected by automatic number-plate recognition technology. As of 15 March, five people had died on Victoria’s roads this month – considered a traditionally high-risk period. Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said it was “completely unacceptable that so many motorists are continuing to take risks on our roads”. “Our increased focus on road safety across March has only begun and the community should be assured they’ll continue to see police out enforcing during this high-risk period.” “We plead with all road users to make good choices – one bad decision is all it takes to cause a tragedy.” Among the alleged offenders was a 24-yearold P-plate driver from Noble Park who had his white Holden sedan impounded after dropping a burnout in front of a marked police vehicle. His hooning was observed on Princes Highway, Narre Warren at 7.26pm on Friday 11 March. The man is expected to be charged with intentionally losing traction and driving a prohibited vehicle for a probationary licence holder. The Holden was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1038. A P2 licence holder was also clocked speed-

He was fined on-the-spot $682 and lost his licence for six months. Also under investigation was a driver who crashed into a parked vehicle on Popes Road, Noble Park about 6am on Sunday 13 March. Police say the car turned left off Chandler Road, struck the vehicle and flipped on its roof. “Indications are that alcohol may have contributed to this collision,” a police spokesperson stated. “Thankfully on this occasion no one else was injured, however at least three other drivers have been detected over the prescribed alcohol limit before 10am this morning. “Police are disappointed at the poor decision making by some drivers to consume alcohol and drive and we will continue to work hard to remove these high-risk drivers from our roads.” A man and two women were also charged after being intercepted in a vehicle in a Doveton hotel car park at 5am on Friday 11 March. Police allegedly seized meth, GHB, prescription medication, a large amount of cash, prohibited weapons and drug paraphernalia. The man was remanded in custody, the women were charged and bailed, police say.

Project is too risky: Shire By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council is looming as the ‘casting vote’ for a joint-council proposal for a waste-to-energy plant in the South East. Mornington Peninsula Shire is the latest council to refuse to sign up to a pre-tender contract with South East Metropolitan Advanced Waste Processing (SEMAWP) Pty Ltd. The contract commits the member councils to supply a “minimum tonnage” of waste for 25 years to a waste to energy plant at an “unconfirmed” location. In a unanimous decision on 17 March, Mornington Peninsula councillors deferred a decision, citing “substantial risks” to ratepayers. They resolved to enquire why the State Government was not underwriting the “regionally significant waste project”. Mayor Anthony Marsh said signing up would have been “reckless”. “As a regionally significant waste project, we expect the State Government to address the substantial risks to ratepayers and provide legislative certainty for the future of alternative waste. “A commitment to the current procurement process would have exposed the Mornington Peninsula Shire and its ratepayers to unacceptable financial risk and would have been reckless.” Cr Marsh called for the SEMAWP to delay the process to allow time for “critical information and a thorough assessment of the risks to councils”. Greater Dandenong Council is the last of 16 original member councils to vote on whether to sign up. It is expected to decide on 28 March. Only seven of the 16 councils have so far committed - Bayside, Cardinia, Casey, Kingston, Knox, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges. A majority was needed for the project’s vi-

Frankston Council has yet to announce its decision in closed-council on 15 March. Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti recently told Star Journal that the council exodus was “very concerning”. It could hurt the project’s viability and increase costs borne by the remaining councils, he said. He was also seeking assurances that the plant would not be located in Greater Dandenong, and that the proposed gate fee would be reduced. Cr Memeti was also concerned about locking the council into a 25-year contract when better technologies may surface in the next 5-10 years.
SEMAWP interim chair Mick Cummins – also chief executive of Bayside Council – recently told Star News that the procurement was based on volumes of household rubbish rather than the number of councils. The committed waste tonnages would help inform the design of an appropriately sized facility. “This is a complex multi-stage procurement, and we anticipated some councils would not proceed through to award the tender. “Councils have been given the opportunity to consider their involvement at each stage and SEMAWP Pty Ltd respects the decision of councils who have chosen to opt out of the procurement.” The waste-to-energy plant is proposed as the solution to a looming landfill shortage for councils in the East and South East.
Hallam landfill has an expiry date of between five and eight years, according to Greater Dandenong Council. There are no plans to build further landfills in the South East. The plant’s location has yet to be “confirmed”, according to the SEMAWP. Last year, a permit was controversially granted by EPA and VCAT to Great Southern Waste Technologies for a waste-to-energy plant in Ordish Road, Dandenong South. Greater Dandenong Council was opposed to the facility. However, GCWT did not make the shortlist of tenderers for the SEMAWPP. The shortlisted applicants are Veolia Environmental Services Australia Pty Ltd, Sacyr Environment Australia and a consortium of Pacific Partnerships and REMONDIS Australia.

On reaching the vicinity of Scoresby, the members of the Keysborough Club, travelling in the first van, encountered a rather severe mishap, owing to the hind wheel of the van collapsing. However, the party reached the Gully. After dinner, an enjoyable afternoon was spent amongst the beauty spots. A good number climbed the mountain to the lookout. This year, Mr Atkinson - a general manager at Dandenong South bakery Aryzta - joined 40 RSK riders around his former hometown Ballarat on 19-21 March. They aimed to raise $160,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities in Victoria and Tasmania. Before the event, he said he loved the comradery of the ride, which supports such a worthy cause. “It’s probably that all the riders are there for the one thing. “It doesn’t matter what walk of life you come from. It’s just an event you want to be part of.” Mr Atkinson was initially inspired to help RSK through friends making use of Ronald McDonald House. “There was that relief that they had a place to stay where their kids were in hospital. “The kids were that resilient and always positive, but to have a family member nearby was an extra boost. “I can’t imagine the emotion and the stress of going through something like that.” In 2010, Mr Atkinson started helping RSK as part of the road support crew. He bought one of the riders’ bikes at a
Rider Paul Atkinson climbed the hills around Ballarat as part of Ride for Sick Kids. fundraising auction and has since ridden it in the event for the past 10 years. This year he’s been feeling more fatigued coming out of Covid lockdown but was training “fairly solidly”. But there’s no pressure to break any records – the event is not a race. “We only go as fast as the slowest rider – everyone starts, everyone finishes.” There’s also a self-paced virtual ride between 19-27 March, which aims to raise $96,000. The power of eternal hope By Matsya Devi Dasi of the Vaisnava Community - Hare Krishna We can see in this current age so many miseries. Currently, we are going through the Covid pandemic and even though it is a little better now, we can clearly see it is beyond our control. What we believe gives our community an eternal hope. Hopefully, this message or ancient Vedic knowledge will give all of us a blissful hope. Many people will have seen Hare Krishnas chanting and dancing in the street. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is a worldwide community of devotees (Vaishnavas) practicing bhakti-yoga and loving service to Krishna. Krishna is a name for God that means ‘All-Attractive.’ ISKCON is also known as ‘the Hare Krishnas,’ or the Krishna Consciousness movement.
MESSAGE OF
HOPE It’s part of the Vaishnava, or monotheistic, tradition within Hindu culture. By practising the basic principles of ISKCON philosophy, we can experience a hope of happiness as one united family on this planet Earth:: By sincerely cultivating spiritual knowledge, we can be free from anxiety and reach a state of pure happiness in this lifetime. We are not our bodies but eternal souls, parts and parcels of God, or Krishna. The soul
· ·
· · · ·
transmigrates into different bodies according to the consciousness at the time of death. As eternal souls, we are all brothers and sisters, and Krishna is ultimately our common father. Krishna is eternal, all-knowing, omnipresent, all-powerful, and all-attractive. He is God the Father, Allah, Buddha, Jehovah, and Yahweh. The Absolute Truth is revealed in the Vedas, the oldest scriptures in the world. The essence of the Vedas is found in the BhagavadGita, a literal record of Krishna’s words. We gain spiritual knowledge from a bonafide spiritual master. Practicing vegetarianism and offering all our food to God before eating purifies our consciousness, minimizes the violence in the world, and frees us from bad karma, or
material reactions or miseries like the Covid pandemic, etc. All our actions should be done as offerings to Krishna and not for selfish motives or to gratify our own senses. The best way to attain self-realization and pure love of God in this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, (Kali yuga) is to chant His holy names. The easiest method for most people is to chant the Hare Krishna maha - mantra or the ‘great mantra’: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare This hope helps us to sustain happiness together as a universal family, no matter what comes around or goes around!

OBITUARY
Vale Alfred ‘Alf’ Goldburg By Cam Lucadou-Wells Tributes have flowed for tireless Dandenong North community servant and veteran Alfred ‘Alf’ Goldburg OAM. Mr Goldburg died peacefully in his sleep at the “spritely age” of 95 on 10 March, his family announced. “His colourful charisma will surely be missed.” In his later years, Alf devoted himself to serving the Dandenong Historical Society, Springvale Benevolent Society and the Noble Park RSL, son Dallas Goldburg said. He was also well known for his tireless work with both the State and Federal sections of the Labor Party. “Alf was active in promoting the Star News and (former) Journal Newspapers wherever he could,” Dallas said. “He was known as the retired local paper boy, aged over 70.” Noble Park RSL president John Meehan said his sub-branch would sorely miss the “dapper” Mr Goldburg - its last remaining World War II veteran. Renowned for his dress sense and immaculate shoes, the former footwear sales manager was always ready to get involved. He was well-known for helping the disadvantaged, often collecting food stuffs at the RSL for charities, Mr Meehan said. “It goes back to his youth. In the Great Depression he experienced some pretty hard times and he grew stronger for it in a way. “He wasn’t a big bloke in stature but he had a big heart.” The Naval and Air Force veteran was a former member of the RSL’s committee. But he’d also often take a ladies group to Dandenong for Morning Melodies concerts, get involved in the RSL’s day group, be up for a dance or give members a lift to hospital, Mr Meehan said.

Alf Goldburg OAM was renowned for his service to neighbours, veterans and politics. 194334 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS On Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, he’d hand out tokens as well as organizing VIPs. “He was always there to help me as president” Mr Meehan said. “I had a lot of time for him – he was a wonderful bloke. A jack of all trades. “As an older person, he brought a lot of good ideas. “He stood up for his rights. He didn’t muck around, and made sure his point got across.” At 92, Mr Goldburg was awarded the Order of Australia Medal. At the time – just three years ago - he was still continuing to serve. He was bringing in newspapers for the Dandenong and District Historical archives or visiting needy families as a Springvale Benevolent Society charity volunteer. He was taking copies of the Dandenong Star Journal to an elderly neighbour after deliveries to her home had ceased. They enjoyed a weekly cup of tea together with each other.
It’s important to keep a look-out for elderly neighbours, many living on their own, he told Star Journal. He also put some food aside for nearby families that he knew were struggling. Mr Goldburg served several bedrock groups that have since closed, such as the former charity Dandenong Benevolent Society. He volunteered in the long-standing Noble Park Drug Action Community Forum, as well as its successor the recently-closed Noble Park Community Action Forum. Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti said Mr Goldburg avidly followed each council meeting’s minutes and brought up issues as a concerned resident. He was well known to senior Labor party figures like Premier Daniel Andrews and Bruce MP Julian Hill. Mr Hill paid tribute to Mr Goldburg’s service for many years as president of the Bruce Federal Electorate Assembly.

His funeral will be held on Monday 4 April at Springvale Botanical Cemetery with refreshments at Noble Park RSL. Numbers are limited due to Covid health restrictions. Life at Regis adult colouring book and pencils by the Lifestyle team one day, and hasn’t looked back ever since. Once he began colouring in the pictures, they started to add up. One by one Gary’s creations were placed on his wall, and it has now amounted to a beautiful display of his artwork. Residents frequently come and admire Gary’s work and always compliment how amazing they are. Gary’s home is now at Regis Cranbourne and has been over the last year. When asked “what does ‘home’ mean to you?” he shared: “Home is a place that you come to at the end of the day and you can sit down, relax and be with your family… home is still with you inside and when you relax, you know that you are home.”

Gary Walker is a resident of Regis Cranbourne who has found a love for colouring. Gary has been a resident for over a year and during his time he has developed a passion for art. The Lifestyle team at Regis Cranbourne have supported him by providing an abundance of pictures and pencils for him to explore his creativity. Gary now has several pieces he has coloured in on his walls around his room, making it look like colourful wallpaper. Gary hasn’t always had a passion for artwork and colouring in, mentioning he “had not done colouring in since he was a young boy.” Gary is also an avid stamp collector and has been collecting for quite some time before coming to his new home at Regis Cranbourne. His interest was sparked when he was given an

Cr’s litter collection spree By Cam Lucadou-Wells Seventeen large sacks of rubbish as well as piles of discarded tools, mattress coils and other junk have been cleaned out of 26 parks in a one-day litter-collection blitz. Greater Dandenong councillor Lana Formoso led a volunteer team toiling for 11 hours in 30-degree heat in every park in her Noble Park North Ward on Sunday 13 March. Starting at 8am, Cr Formoso with 13 family and friends salvaged an astonishing mound of waste. Especially considering that it was just a week after Clean Up Australia Day. Among the haul were 79 protective face masks as well as cardboard sheets, a whippersnipper, a vacuum cleaner, gym equipment, and drug paraphernalia. “Waste in general just shocks me. And the fact that it can end up in our waterways. “That’s why I set an example for my kids Luka and Hugo. They were also excited to take part, doing something positive for the environment.” But the war against waste is never over. Cr Formoso returned to GJ Duggan Reserve soon after the clean-up to find newly-dumped litter. “That was devastating. That’s a real kick in the guts – the fact that people are so ignorant about waste and what harm it actually does. “We need more education, more recycling and more bins.” The endless cigarette butts, straws and beer bottle tops found around sports clubs was another lowlight. Cr Formoso has volunteered on the annual Clean Up Australia Day for much of her life. She hopes to make her 26-park blitz a traditional part of the day. “I’m certainly conscious about leaving the least environmental footprint I can. “I thought it would be a great way to get the community involved and focus on keeping our ward clean.”

NDIS participant, Joshua, has goals just like many others: he would like to get his license; maintain a job that he enjoys; be independent and live on his own; participate in his community and socialise with friends. Working full-time, Joshua found it difficult to find the supports he needed on weekends and outside of his working hours. He approached OC Connections’ Casey Disability Supports Hub and, together with his mum and dad, worked with Hub coordinator Lyndall to establish what supports he needed, and when and where he needed them. They established a regular support program with an OC Connections disability support worker to support Joshua every Saturday to get out into the community and live his life the way he wants to. Joshua has been very happy with the support he has received from OC Connections. “They are good communicators, and I don’t feel nervous when I am out. They are interested in what I want to do and listen to my opinions,” he said. Our co-achieve model is our way of working with Joshua on all the different areas of his life that are important for happy and healthy living. Star Stretto streets them By David Nagel The Sandown Hillside track has seen many impressive performances in recent times – but it would be hard to find one better than that delivered by the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Stretto on Wednesday. The now five-year-old gelding – formerly trained by Matt Cumani – made a one-act affair of the $50,000 BenchMark-64 Handicap (1300m), streaking clear of his opposition to win by almost five lengths on the line. The son of Nicconi/Rhythm Beat had shown great promise under Cumani, running a string of placings and making his way through to the $110,000 Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m) at Flemington in July 2020. But a torn suspensory ligament injury, which threatened to limit his career, saw the talented campaigner switch camps to the number-one stable in the state during the middle of last year. The Maher-Eustace team then later moved from Caulfield to Cranbourne, with the fresh environment obviously doing the horse well. Stretto – who was also gelded after moving to Maher/Eustace – was nursed back to health and had two jump outs at Cranbourne in February this year. He returned to racing, with gun-jockey Jamie Kah aboard, with a solid second in a similar race at Sandown on February 23, before his dominant win on the very same surface on Wednesday. Stretto was given time to settle by Kah, before ambling up the leaders at the 400-metre mark and racing clear, and easing up, for the softest of victories. Eustace was thrilled with what he saw. “Naturally you expect them to improve, but you also don’t expect them to win like that,” Eustace said post-race. “He’s clearly come on and it just worked out very nicely for him with the good tempo. “They went a bit steady first up and it probably just undid him late…just being a bit keen. “But Jamie, having had a sit on him, that was big help second time around and obviously he could not have been more impressive.” Eustace said it had taken great dedication, and diligence, from his team to get Stretto back to the track. “He did a suspensory and it’s taken a lot of people to get him here today,” he said. “Leigh Emerson, Craig Roylance, they sent us the horse and the team at Cranbourne, especially Lucy, have done a great job with him.
Stretto hits the front and races away for an impressive five-length victory at Sandown on Wednesday. 273185 Pictures: SCOTT BARBOUR/RACING PHOTOS
Cranbourne jockey Ben Allen completes a winning-double at Sandown aboard Lempicka. “He does a lot of treadmill work there so they’ve done an excellent job just to keep him right, sound and happy, and hopefully he can push on from here.” The dominant Maher/Eustace team trained a winning double on the card, with Texcel making it race-to-race victories, with John Allen aboard, in the next race on the program. Cranbourne father-daughter partnership, Ken and Kasey Keys, also trained a double, while Cranbourne-based jockey Ben Allen continued his fine recent run of form by guiding the Keys’ pair to victory. Allen, who recently made Marabi his first group-1 winner, piloted Poleaxed to victory in race five, before an easy win on Lempicka over the sprint journey of 1000-metres in race eight. Racing returns to Sandown Hillside this Wednesday 23 March.

‘Man vs Beast’ raises over $7,000 for mental health By Luke Corda When you tell the owner of a greyhound ‘I can run faster than that!’, you better be able to back-up the talk. The lads from Willow Grove Cricket Club who raised over $7,000 for mental health with a ‘Man vs Beast’ race enjoyed a well-earned evening at Sandown Park on Thursday night after their incredible fundraising effort. The story began last November when the optimistic Pete Grima made the daring claim that he could comfortably outrun his mate’s greyhound, Celtic Gypsy, in a one-on-one race. “We were having a drink one night and were giving our mate a bit of stick because his dog (Celtic Gypsy) had lost three in a row, so I told him that even I could beat her,” he said. “After that we all agreed to set up a race and have a bit of fun with it.” The idea caught traction quickly and generated plenty of interest from surrounding communities – so much so that the lads saw potential to make a difference and raise funds and awareness for Mindfull Aus and mental health in general. The men from Willow Grove have been advocates for mental health awareness for some time now, each having their own unique individual experiences to deal with. 18 STAR JOURNAL

If you talk the talk, you better walk the walk! The group behind the light-hearted fundraiser. ‘The Roosters’, as they call themselves, meet regularly to talk out their issues and catch up with one another at ‘The Irish at Willow Grove’ pub – who hosted the event inline with their grand opening. The race format saw Celtic Gypsee start 150m away from the finish line, with Pete be-
ginning from the 50m mark. In what was the lowest class race of Celtic Gypsee’s career, a large crowd made their way to Willow Grove following a Saturday afternoon football game to witness the event. Sure enough, Pete lived up to his word and beat Celtic Gypsy in the highly-anticipated
race – with the slight help of a 100m head start! “It was such a great day. The crowd was huge – they were all coming to watch me pull a hammy,” he said. “I was so sore from cricket that day and the wind was seriously blowing – I was surprised I held on. The best part was she (Celtic Gypsy) ran straight up to me after and we just cuddled.” Following the race, the team at ‘The Irish at Willow Grove’ opened up the pub for food and drinks as well as some live music as the fundraiser continued with auctions. Sandown Park contributed a package for a table of six, offering drinks and a threecourse meal worth over $500 – It auctioned off for over $1300 thanks to the ‘The Roosters’! The group of local legends used their package on Thursday night and got to see some seriously fast greyhounds in action – Pete wouldn’t have stood a chance. The event gathered a grand total of $7,032 for Mindfull Aus in addition to the priceless effort to break down the stigma that still surrounds mental health. “We challenge those of you who do struggle with your own mental health to seek out help, and those that don’t struggle as much, to assist those that do and get the help they need.” dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

It isn’t every day you get to bat with a bloke that’s played for Australia. Chandrasinghe and Will Pucovski walk out to the middle.
Kellepotha snared the catch to send the Vics back into bat, but he had a nice quiet day from then on out.
A quick look to a family member, a nod and out he goes.
Ashley enjoys big day out Buckley Ridges junior Ashley Chandrasinghe and DDCA legend Ruwantha Kellepotha were once again in Victorian colours during the week. Kellepotha was an extremely late call up, with a bowler going down in the warm up, creating a mad dash for the leggie to get to Mervyn Hughes Oval in Footscray, while Chandrasinghe was among the runs yet again. Star News Group journalist TYLER LEWIS was in the area on day three, when Chandrasinghe spent more time in the middle.
On the drive.
The young lefty was certainly made to earn each of his runs. 273042
Locals set to light it up as the VFL season comes around By Tyler Lewis The VFL season kicks off next weekend, and for a lot of locals, that means their time of waiting is over. The Rowville Football Club can hold its head high, with a whopping 12 players from the Hawks on a VFL list. Experienced locals Jimmy Munro (Casey), Cal Porter (Box Hill) and Mitch White (Cranbourne) will roll around again, while some others have found new homes, and some will push their case for a VFL debut. Matt Wetering (Springvale Districts) has joined the Collingwood VFL program after back-to-back league medals in the Southern League, while speedster Lachie Modica (Beaconsfield) has made the shift from Casey Fields to Port Melbourne. Here is the list of all south east locals that are entrenched in VFL programs… CASEY DEMONS: Jimmy Munro (Cora Lynn) Mitch White (Cranbourne) Kyle Stainthorpe (Rowville) Zac Andrewartha (Langwarrin) Roan Steele (Frankston YCW) Tyler Edwards (Rowville)
