Vandals lock cemetery

A royal day out

The Pakenham Cemetery Trust is responding to ongoing vandalism by locking the cemetery’s vehicle gates, the decision recently made to protect items left by loved ones and monuments. “The vandalism has increased significantly over the last few years with the increase in population around the cemetery,“ Stacey Wright said on behalf of the Trust. But the locked gates has already upset local residents with one 90 year old in tears because she cannot walk across the cemetery to pay her respects. STORY PAGE 5

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert treated Kooweerup to a dash of their imperial decadence on Sunday 3 April at the annual Harewood Heritage Day. Their Royal Highnesses (aka Bev and Rodney Edwards) had crowds bowing at the first open day of the historic estate since 2018. COVERAGE PAGES 62-63

A long wait for services Early leaning centre educators and families in Cardinia Shire are calling for more allied health support as children sit on waitlists to access professional services including psychologists and speech pathologists for up to two years. The extensive waiting lists have been exacerbated by Covid-19 disruptions, leaving young children without professional diagnosis and the tools to manage their conditions before entering primary school. Educators say the delay could impact a child’s physical, emotional and social development. STORY PAGE 7

Council backflips 12543926-SN14-22

Cardinia councillors have listened to their community to defy officers’ recommendations for two planning applications in Garfield and Pakenham. A brewery was approved and a plan to demolish heritage buildings in Garfield refused as a result of the backflips. Planning officers had recommended the

Pakenham micro-brewery be knocked back. However, councillors disagreed, dismissing original concerns about the number of car parks available for customers of the new business. Westernport Ward councillor Kaye Cameron put forward the alternate motion, stating the application would “enhance the experience for people who live, work and visit the municipality” and be an opportunity to offer

diverse employment and industry in Pakenham. “The young people who want to start this, they don’t have any backers, they are using all their own money and I think it’s just fantastic to see them having a go,” she said. Another proposal was rejected by councillors in an effort to protect the heritage of Garfield’s township. A plan to build additional shops and partially demolish heritage listed

sites was dismissed following more than 300 objections, despite officer’s recommendations to approve the application. “When you have 300 plus objectors, you have to take notice,“ councillor Graeme Moore said. “I’d like to thank the objectors and the Garfield Action Group for their support for their local community.” STORIES PAGES 2-3
