Let the Games begin! By Ash Bolt The 2026 Commonwealth Games are coming to Geelong. The Commonwealth Games Federation announced Tuesday regional Victoria would host the games, with Geelong to be one of four hubs around the state, along with Ballarat, Bendigo and Gippsland. City of Greater Geelong deputy mayor Trent Sullivan said hosting the games would be a major boon for the region. “The Games attract more than 5000 athletes from more than 70 nations, so the economic benefits for our tourism, events and hospitality industries will be enormous,” he said. “This is not just about sport – thousands of athletes and spectators will experience the growing buzz about Geelong, including our fabulous food, culture, and beaches. “We’re thrilled that Geelong has won the opportunity to host a regional hub for athletes and official and fans.” Under the multi-city model, Geelong will host an athletes’ village and several events. “After the Games the athletes’ hub could be turned into affordable housing and leave lasting benefits for our region,” Cr Sullivan said. Geelong will host the aquatic sports, including swimming, para-swimming and diving, beach volleyball, gymnastics, hockey, triathlon and para-triathlon, T20 cricket matches, table tennis and para-table tennis. “Some of the hottest competition will take place in the water so we’re thrilled that Geelong has been chosen to host the aquatic events,” Cr Sullivan said. “Our waterfront at Eastern Beach provides a world-class sporting landscape and is positioned well to host the triathlon and beach volleyball. “We want to use the Commonwealth Games as an opportunity to deliver a legacy for our region for decades to come. “A Regional Indoor Sports and Events Centre is a priority project for council and we are developing a business case to advocate for funding from the Victorian and Australian governments for this critical facility.” It is estimated the 2026 Commonwealth Games will contribute more than $3 billion to Victoria’s economy, and create more than 7500 jobs.

Police urge Easter safety Easter is here and with families getting ready to enjoy their Easter eggs and get away for the long weekend, Geelong Police are urging everyone to stay safe on the roads. The Geelong Police Eyewatch Facebook shared police would be running Operation Compass over the Easter and ANZAC Day long weekends to ensure families made it to their destinations safely. “The combination of school holidays and two consecutive long weekends is shaping up to create a dangerous period on Victoria’s roads, with hordes of drivers set to take advantage of the extended breaks and head to holiday destinations across the state,” police said. “As these long weekends are the last pre-winter, they will be utilised for holiday travel and police intelligence suggests that this is a high-risk time. “Statewide road policing Operation Compass will be conducted … to address the increased risk of road trauma. “The major focus for [Operation Compass] will be on impaired driving, speed, fatigue, distraction offences and seat belt compliance. “The aim, in addition to detecting offences, is to provide highly visible police activity and enforcement to reinforce positive driving behaviours and lessen the incidence of road trauma.” Operation Compass will run from Thursday, April 14 to Monday, April 18 and Friday, April 22 to Monday, April 25.

Libs commit to aquatic funding By Ash Bolt The Liberal Party has announced it will spend $20 million to fund the second stage of the North Bellarine Aquatic and Leisure centre in Drysdale if it is re-elected at next month’s federal election. Libral candidate for Corangamite Stephanie Asher said the funding commitment was key tenet of her local plan and would provide greater access to swimming, health and community facilities on the Bellarine. “Our plan to fully deliver the North Bellarine Aquatic and Leisure Centre is a win for local
residents across Bellarine communities,” she said. “For too long, communities such as Drysdale, Curlewis, Portarlington, St Leonards and Indented Head have been denied access to sporting and community facilities other parts of our region enjoy. “My local plan for Corangamite focuses on delivering the community facilities local residents and communities deserve. “This facility will make an enormous difference for community health and wellbeing – for seniors, families and more than 3500 students who attend local schools –
and will also save lives. “As mayor, I was proud to have fought to secure funding for stage one of this project and am excited now to be part of delivering this next step forward.” Work is underway on the $15.5 million first stage of the project, which includes the construction of a 50-metre, eight-lane heated outdoor pool. The City had received $10 million from the federal government for stage one. The City of Greater Geelong has released initial concept plans for the facility’s second stage, which includes a warm water exercise
pool, a learn to swim program pool, a water play pool, accessible ramps, a spa, sauna and steam room, change rooms and gymnasium, group fitness rooms, health consulting suites a cafe and occasional care room. It matches a similar $20 million commitment made by Corangamite MP Libby Coker last year if the Labor Party won the election. In October Labor committed $20 million to build an all year-round facility, including a 50-metre indoor pool with movable floor and dry spaces for community functions, classes and rehab.

Ms Corbey said the change of venue worked a treat. “What a fantastic park West Park is,” she said. “We moved the festival there because it’s close to our home, but it’s such a great space for these kinds of events. “It’s so encompassing that no matter where you were, you had a good view of everything that was going on – it really should be used more often.” Ash Bolt

Colourful weekend a ‘great success’ Organisers of Geelong’s Rainbow Festival have labelled the event’s return a “great success”. The festival returned over the weekend after being forced into cancellation at the 11th hour last year, with activities and lives music entertaining visitors on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. Geelong Rainbow vice president Carol Corbey said it was a positive return. “It went very well, everyone I’ve spoken to that was there said they really enjoyed it,” she said. “Numbers were a bit down on previous years, but there’s still a little bit of those worries
around fully getting out because of COVID, as well as the [Formula 1] grand prix over the weekend, so it wasn’t a surprise. “The weather was wonderful, the entertainment was terrific and the atmosphere was great – it was a very chilled out festival, which is what we were hoping for. “The only way it could have been better was if there had been more people there to enjoy it.” The festival started on Saturday morning with the Pride March from Johnstone Park to the festival’s new home of West Park in Pakington Street, where activities and entertainment were held.

Bowls event is back on Although COVID restrictions drove Torquay Lions Club to cancel its planned 2022 major annual charity day in January, a change of plans means the club will now run the event next week. The club will now run the charity day on Friday, April 22. “When the club resurrected the January event, local traders, having gifted donations and vouchers for thousands of dollars, were pleased to see the charity day go ahead,” Torquay Lions president Neil Roche said. “Our Lions who had worked hard to make this year’s charity bowls day a memorable success are elated. “Funds raised from the coming charity day are dedicated to Torquay’s VICSES unit enabling the unit to purchase additional specialised equipment. “One hundred and twenty bowlers are expected to play, and, from past events, we
know how generous they are in helping us raise funds.” Mr Roche said the Torquay VICSES unit needed some additional specialised equipment to be carried on its vehicles when volunteers turn out for road rescues and other emergency callouts. The Torquay Lions have helped the Torquay unit before, and also supported the Torquay Fire Brigade and the Torquay Marine Rescue Service, surf lifesaving clubs and local police. “Monies raised from our community are dedicated for return to organisations which serve the whole community, those who suffer disasters, young people, and those in need,” Mr Roche said. Anyone who is interested in playing bowls on the Torquay Lions Charity Bowls Day should contact Robert Grubb on 0409 552 190.

Sod turned on Hanwha
Architect appointed for school works
By Ash Bolt Construction has started on Hanwha Defense Australia’s Armoured Vehicle Centre of Excellence at Geelong. Last Friday, 8 April Prime Minister Scott Morrison led the sod-turning for the facility, where the South Korean company will build self-propelled howitzers and armoured ammunition resupply vehicles under a $1 billion defence contract. Mr Morrison said the project would deliver a major economic boost for the Geelong, with more than 300 jobs to be delivered over its lifespan. “With the turn of the sod today at Avalon we are keeping our promise, securing Geelong’s rightful place in our country’s advanced manufacturing and defence industry, creating skilled jobs and delivering huge economic benefits for the region,” Mr Morrison said on Friday. “As construction ramps up it will create up to 100 jobs, and once this cutting edge facility is up and running around 300 locals will be employed at the site. “Importantly, several local businesses will be engaged along the way to help deliver this critical $1 billion defence project. This includes an Australian-owned Victorian-based construction company that will build this $170 million facility with completion by 2024. “This project is a clear demonstration of my government’s commitment to securing a strong economy and a strong future for all Australians, with investments in both our economic and national security.” The turning of the sod comes less than two months after the South Korean company confirmed it would build its facility near Avalon Airport. It had committed to basing the facility in

the City of Greater Geelong when it won the $1 billion contract last December. The contract will see Hanwha build 30 self-propelled guns and 15 armoured ammunition resupply vehicles used to replenish stocks of artillery shells on missions. The facility will initially focus on the production the howitzers, and will feature multiple assembly lines, a 1.5 kilometre test track, a deep-water test facility and an obstacle course to ensure the vehicles function as intended prior to delivery. Hanwha has also planned for the expansion of operations should the government also win another federal government contract. significant to Australia’s growing defence industry. “This project will create hundreds of jobs, with more than 90 per cent of vehicle sustainment to be completed in Australia,” she said. “The opportunities for our defence industry are significant and will benefit local companies until the late 2040s. “The big advantage of these highly mobile, hard-hitting weapons is that they can fire, and immediately move, before any enemy can accurately locate them. “The new guns, mounted on tracks and with heavy armour, offer much better protection to their crews in the face of nuclear, biological, chemical and radiological threats. “The result is that our troops have a mobile and versatile weapon system that gives them the best possible chance of successfully completing their mission and returning home safely.”
Students at Ceres Primary School are one step closer to getting upgraded learning facilities, with an architect appointed to design the school’s new inclusive facilities. South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman last week announced architect Ewers and Kelynack had been appointed to design the school’s new outdoor learning space. The school had received $200,00 from the state government through the seventh round of its Inclusive Schools Fund to build an inclusive outdoor learning space, including seating and sensory equipment. “This new space will make a real difference to students at Ceres Primary School, who will get the benefits of new inclusive spaces to cater for a wider range of options for teaching and learning,” Mr Cheeseman said. “As we build the Education State, we’re continuing to invest in schools to ensure students of all abilities can access a great education – no matter their circumstances.” The design work is set to be completed in the coming months, before construction works begin so the facility is ready for use in early 2023. The upgrade will complement a state government funded upgrade of the school in 2019. The school received $1.25 million for an upgrade and modernisation of its facilities in 2018, with the works completed in late 2019.

Push for online reporting option By Ash Bolt A Surf Coast MP is pushing to give victims more options when reporting sexual assaults. Torquay-based Western Victoria MP Stuart Grimley has pushed for the state government to investigate an online reporting system for incidents of sexual assault. Geelong East woman Mikaylah East, who last year reported to police she was raped in 2019, said she would have reported much earlier if there had been an alternative reporting option available. “If I had an alternative reporting option, I would have reported my rape much sooner,” she said.
“I founded The Imperative Project because I wanted to create a safe space for any survivors of sexual assault and violence where they felt heard and understood. This reporting option will help me to create that safe space. “I would like to be able to refer people who come to me with stories of sexual assault to a reporting option that gives them agency and options over their story. “We need this alternative reporting option as a matter of urgency.” Mr Grimley said the Victorian Law Reform Commission’s 2021 report, Improving the Justice System Response to Sexual Offences, found about 87 per cent of people who experienced sexual violence did not report
it to the police. The report recommended an alternative reporting option, but Mr Grimley said the government had yet to commit to its implementation. “As policymakers, we should be doing everything in our power to make reporting sexual assault as easy as possible. This online reporting option is just one way to reduce unnecessary barriers,” Mr Grimley said. “I’ve spoken to New South Wales police about their [sexual assault reporting option] and they’ve had great success with it. Whilst it isn’t perfect, and they are making improvements to make it more trauma-informed, they have been able to
prosecute for more victim-survivors and prevent drink spiking as a result of SARO. “The alternative reporting option will help us gather data and intelligence which will allow us to better understand the breadth of sexual assault and develop targeted policies to reduce the scourge.” Mr Grimley introduced a motion in parliament last week requiring the government to consult on an alternative reporting option and report back by September 1, which was passed. Premier Daniel Andrews said the government would look at “anything that makes it easier for people to tell their story, to get justice for them”.
Inspiring role models Aboriginal and Torees Strait Islander students across the region were inspired by Indigenous role models when the Koorie Student Aspirations Day was held earlier this month. High school students attended the two-day event held on Wadawurrung Country at GMHBA Stadium on Monday, April 4 and Tuesday, April 5, organised by the Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (LAECG) and supported by the Polly Farmer Foundation. The event provided an opportunity for students to hear from inspirational young Indigenous role models who have achieved success in their chosen field and get them thinking about their post-school career and education pathways and opportunities. Each day included a Welcome to Country from Wadawurrung Traditional Owner
Corrina Eccles, followed by a “speed dating” session where students learned about opportunities available to them following the end of secondary school. Students heard from representatives from educational institutions such as universities and TAFE, representatives from building and construction organisations, unions, employment agencies and local organisations with Indigenous traineeships and pathways. Former X-Factor winner and Australian Eurovision representative Isaiah Firebrace, a Yorta Yorta/Gunditjmara man was the guest speaker for the Koorie Aspirations Day and shared his story of growing up in Echuca, his first experience of singing in front of a crowd at school, his failures and how he worked through them before winning the X-Factor at the age of 16.

$1.6m election pledge By Ash Bolt South Barwon Cricket Club will benefit from a $1.6 million upgrade to its facilities if Labor wins next month’s federal election. Corio MP Richard Marles and Corangamite MP Libby Coker both visited South Barwon Reserve on Tuesday morning to announce the election commitment. The $1.6 million upgrade will allow the club’s ageing facilities be upgraded to cater for the grwth of the club, particularly in its junior and women’s programs. A new modular pavilion will provide necessary amenities for the club as well as house community groups for events and social gathering. The pavilion will provide unisex facilities and developed to provide comfortable, private and safe environments for all genders, as well
as kitchen facilities, which will allow Indians in Geelong to continue its food relief work at the site. “Labor recognises the importance of community connection through sport,” Mr Marles said. “The joining of South Barwon Cricket Club and the Indians in Geelong Inc. is a perfect match. This will allow the clubs to grow their membership and for the Indian community to build on the generous food relief service they provided during the pandemic.” Ms Coker added the upgrade was much needed to cater for population growth in Geelong’s southern suburbs. “The region is undergoing rapid population growth, where major community infrastructure is needed to create liveable and connected communities,” she said. South Barwon Cricket Club president Simon Breuer welcomed the commitment.
“South Barwon Cricket Club is delighted to receive this support from [Corio MP] Richard Marles and [Corangamite MP] Libby Coker, as it is a recognition of the needs and growth of our club over the past ten years, particularly in terms of our Women’s and junior programs,” he said. “We are strategically located to continue our growth in both number and stature, with an upgraded road network next to the club, we are at the gateway to the Armstrong Creek community. “Our plan of building contemporary and inclusive facilities will enable us to accommodate the needs of current and future members. “A big part of our plans has been a partnership with the Indians of Geelong who share our love for cricket and will utilise the facilities year round to support their cricket and cultural programs.”
Geelong teenagers are being encouraged to catch-up on their scheduled human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations, with thousands of Victorian teens missing out on the vaccine in the last two years due to COVID-19 restrictions. The most recent statistics from the NCIRS Annual Immunisation Coverage Report 2020 show the proportion of Australian teenagers completing the two-dose HPV vaccination schedule within a calendar year was 11.6 per cent lower in 2020 than in 2019. Cancer Council Victoria’s Head of Screening, Early Detection and Immunisation Kate Broun said the HPV vaccine was provided free as part of the secondary school-based immunisation program, usually when children were in Year 7. “The impacts of COVID-19 have seen many children miss attendance at school over the last two years and parents may not have realised their child is yet to complete their HPV vaccination schedule,” Ms Broun said. “Coupled with the ongoing effects of a large number of people infected with COVID-19 and/or in quarantine, we anticipate that more eligible children will miss HPV doses this year. “Unfortunately, other medical issues don’t stop because of COVID-19. During what is already a difficult time, it is incredibly important that people look after their own health and the health of their loved ones. Ash Bolt

Police expecting busy weekend By Justin Flynn Extra police officers will be rostered on to help with the busy Easter weekend on the Bellarine Peninsula. Bellarine Police Senior Sergeant Adrian Bickley said all signs were pointing to a bumper weekend on the Bellarine and some of the issues police would be focussing on included alcohol use and behaviour stemming from the abuse of alcohol. Property damage is also high on the list as police wish to decrease damage occurring to
buildings such as public toilets, Senior Sergeant Bickley said. Senior Sergeant Bickley asked parents to be aware of where their children are during the holiday period. “I have teenagers of my own and I know it’s a holiday time and our young people will want to get together to enjoy that time - that’s only natural,” he said. “I just ask that parents speak with their children about acting responsibly and ensure they are aware of where their children are and who they are with.
“If they are under the age of 18, then they are children and may not have the ability that adults have to make wise decisions, especially if they become alcohol affected. “I would say a chat with your son or daughter before they go out is so much better than having a chat with a police officer later in the day due to a poor decision being made.” Senior Sergeant Bickley said local police will also be monitoring road users over the holiday period as part of a state wide policing response to reduce road trauma. “If you need police because you are aware
something is happening that may require police quickly, then call 000,” Senior Sergeant Bickley said. “This allows police to get to what is occurring as quickly as possible and deal with the incident. A call to 000 may help stop a crime occurring so don’t be afraid to call. “If something has occurred that does not require police to be there quickly, such as someone finding lost property or have realised that someone has damaged your letter box overnight for example, then call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.”
April walking challenge The Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) has launched its inaugural The Great Dog Walk Challenge, a campaign focused on encouraging people to walk this April and raise much needed funds for the dogs in its care. Community members can sign up online and make a pledge to walk this April, choosing their own distance and frequency. With average costs of $55 a day to support one dog in the GAWS shelter and cover essentials, GAWS chief executive Helen Cocks said she hoped many people would get behind the challenge and support the major fundraiser for the year. “The Great Dog Walk Challenge empowers all people to support a common cause – to help raise funds for our dogs in need, while enjoying the benefits of fitness and fresh air with their four-legged friends,” Ms Cocks said. “Whether it is one stroll around the block or a power walk every day of April, people can choose how they participate and set their own fundraising goals.
Every dollar raised will have a significant impact on the lives of the dogs we look after.” GAWS has thousands of animals in its care each year. Last year, almost a third of those admitted were dogs. Costing more than $1500 a month for one dog, GAWS requires funds to cover expenses including shelter, food, veterinary care, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, de-sexing, rehabilitation, a possible foster care stay, enrichment and anything else they need during their stay. Ms Cocks said most of the organisation’s income came from donations and fundraising. “As a not for profit organisation, we rely on the generous donations and fundraising from our community and supporters to continue our work of providing care and rehoming services for many lost, stray and abandoned dogs,” she said. Trust the experts to diagnose plantar fasciitis correctly Foot Pain & Plantar Fasciitis Facts: Pain involving the plantar fascia is extremely common. The collagen fibers running under the foot connecting the heel and forefoot, pain of the plantar fascia is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed, misunderstood and mistreated concerns of the feet. One of Australia’s leading musculoskeletal podiatrists, Dr David Kavanagh from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Geelong West, explains why this is: “We’ve spent a lot of time in clinic over the past 25 years helping patients with heel and/or arch pain, who have been misdiagnosed with plantar fasciitis, and have therefore received inappropriate and ineffective treatment. Despite popular belief, even amongst many health professionals, most plantar fascia pain is NOT really plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammatory condition. Most plantar fascia pain is actually degeneration of the plantar fascia tissues or a nerve impingement. This is why treatment for most plantar fascia conditions is ineffective – The wrong thing is being treated!”, explains Dr. Kavanagh. “Misdiagnoses often occur when tissue thickening evident on diagnostic scans is misinterpreted as inflammation or when inflammation is considered to be the cause of the condition. This is a common misunderstanding that I have observed even by many good GPs, radiologists and general podiatrists. In these cases, anti-inflammatory treatments or cortisone injections are often incorrectly prescribed, which may at times provide some temporary relief, but can often result in a worsening and recurrence of the condition.” “Degenerative and inflammatory conditions require very different treatment, so plantar fascia conditions must be diagnosed
The experts at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics will address the cause of your pain, not just the symptoms.

The Guide PICK OF THE WEEK MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA 10, Monday, 7.30pm
Combining the winning ingredients of 2020’s Back to Win with the classic MasterChef recipe, this Fans & Favourites season is set to satisfy even the fussiest diner. For the hit show’s 14th iteration, 12 past contestants and fan favourites – among them series winners Julie Goodwin, Sashi Cheliah and Billie McKay – will be challenged by 12 fresh-faced foodies, including a TikTok star, a dentist, a firefighter and a banking analyst. The fancy fare served up on the series has evolved considerably since inaugural winner Goodwin lifted the trophy in 2009 – how will her classic cuisine measure up against a new generation of chefs for whom cooking with hibachi grills, sous vide and liquid nitrogen is second nature?
SMOTHER ABC TV, Friday, 8.30pm
DEVOURED SBS Viceland, Saturday, 9.25pm
GRAND DESIGNS ABC TV, Sunday, 7.40pm
Power, money and privilege. Oh, and a beautiful white mansion sitting gloriously atop seaside cliffs. Sometimes, you just need one element to grab your attention, and you can forgive the other distractions. Such is the case in this over-the-top thriller slash mystery slash whodunnit: the setting in a rugged, Irish seaside town is just as stormy and unpredictable as its characters. Enter the lives of the dysfunctional Ahern clan and their matriarch Val (Dervla Kirwan, pictured), if location is your thing. This week, when Val finds “liar” written in lipstick on her mirror, she wisely believes someone is after her.
If you like your crusty bread with a side of wayward bullets, this devilish food doco series might be right up your alley. Premiering tonight, each one-hour episode delves into a true story intersecting an American city’s renowned cuisine with the underbelly of the crime world. The deliciously dark series is narrated by Two and a Half Men’s Jon Cryer (pictured), and includes such tantalisingly titled episodes as “The Codfather” and “The Fast Food Killer”. This week, in “A Slice of Pie”, there’s a fine line between cooks and criminals. When a pizzeria’s secret family recipe is stolen, the mafia serves up some time-honoured retribution.
Any building project undertaken over the last few years has surely felt like a Grand Designs episode for the homeowners behind the plans, with time and cost blowouts aplenty. However, they pale in comparison when it comes to the Huxham Shard House, an ambitious and futuristic art installation of a home overlooking a picturesque valley in South Devon. Inspired by rocks that feature in the local countryside, property developer Joe and his wife Claire are building a residence with 34 enormous, angled zinc shards jutting out in all directions. The mind-boggling delays and budget woes even surprise veteran host Kevin McCloud (pictured).
Back for seconds: MasterChef Australia’s first-ever winner Julie Goodwin returns to compete against a new generation of foodies.

RACV safe driving tips RACV has provided safety tips for Victorians about to embark on their first holiday period free of COVID-19 restrictions since 2019. With thousands of families heading away on road trips to tourist hot spots or many taking the opportunity to relax at home, RACV Policy Lead - Safety, Elvira Lazar and RACV General Manager Home, Darren Turner, have provided some timely advice. “We’re all really excited about the Easter holidays and the opportunities for travel and reunion. At this time, we need to take a moment to think about safety on the road and in the home,” Ms Lazar said. “Take the time to plan your trip before you depart, attempting to take major, more well-maintained roads where possible. “To stay aware of potential emergency warnings and community information that could impact travel, utilise resources such as the RACV arevo app, and the VicEmergency app – the official Victorian Government app. “Schedule some breaks to ensure you’re well rested and have patience for your fellow motorists. Before you head off, make sure your insurance policies and RACV roadside assistance are up to date and that the water, oil and tyre pressure are all where they should be.” In addition to ensuring their road trip is as safe as possible, there’s a lot that can be done to ensure Victorians do not return home to a different kind of tragedy, says Darren Turner. “There are measures we can take to protect our homes and possessions while we are away,” Mr Turner said. “Make a trusted neighbour aware of your absence and wherever possible, set a timer for some lights to come on at night. Double check that every single door and window is locked properly. “For those planning to make up for lost time with more than one holiday in 2022, it’s worth considering installing an alarm system to

protect your home and its contents – for a small monthly fee your peace of mind will improve whether you’re going away for a weekend or three weeks.” For Victorians intending to stay at home and cross-off some items on their home maintenance to-do list, Trade Manager and licensed Plumber with RACV Trades, Aaron Borg, has provided some advice that can help prevent costly damage and protect your home. “Vital tasks that can protect your home from damage from flash flooding and bushfires include cleaning debris around your property, pruning trees close to your house, mowing the lawn, removing twigs and leaves in the gutters and pipes and sealing any gaps that may have developed in windows and doors,” Mr Borg said. “Before you take on work inside the house, you need to be absolutely sure it’s work you’re
qualified to do. One thing we see a lot in our role is people who want to do a bit of DIY work around their home and unfortunately make the situation worse. For plumbing and electrical work this is often illegal, not to mention extremely dangerous. That’s why it’s always worth your while to engage a qualified and licensed tradesperson and save yourself more time and money down the road. “One of the most important things people can do is check the equipment they are using is adequate to safely complete a task. For example, before getting on the roof, check the safety and stability of the ladder, scope out a safe space to both embark and disembark and show extreme caution when cleaning high gutters. “If you’ve got any doubts about your safety, taking the time to plan out the work you want to do can sometimes be the difference between success and injury.”

McDonald named the Cats’ best By Ash Bolt Midfielder Amy McDonald has been recognised for her stellar 2022 AFL Women’s season with her second Geelong best and fairest on Saturday night. McDonald took out the award at GMHBA Stadium with 116 votes, ahead of Becky Webster on 103 votes and defender Maddy McMahon on 102. Nina Morrison (56 votes), Chloe Scheer (40), Georgie Prespakis (37), Chantel Emonson (23), Meg McDonald (22), Kate Darby (17) and Darcy Moloney (14) rounded out the top 10. The award capped off a successful third season in the hoops for the 24-year-old, after she was named in the AFL’s extended All-Australian squad, alongside McMahon. From Ballarat, McDonald was taken with the 80th pick of the 2019 AFLW draft after a standout season with Geelong’s VFLW team, and again elevated her game in 2022. She led the team in disposals, tackles,
clearances and contested possessions. Geelong AFLW senior coach Dan Lowther said the sky was the limit for the young midfielder. “Amy’s rapidly become one of the premier midfielders in the AFLW competition, and that’s a tribute to her work ethic and her dedication and commitment to her craft,” Lowther said. “In my time at the Cats, I’ve seen her work hard to continuously build her fitness base, both at the club and in her own time, and with that, I’ve seen her confidence grow alongside the ability to impact games. “I couldn’t be more proud of her as a footballer and as a person for what she’s achieved. “If she keeps working on her game, as I’m sure she will, there’s no ceiling on what she can achieve.” McDonald also won the AFLW Fan MVP Award as voted on by Cats members at the end of the season. Other award winners on the night were
Darby and Georgie Rankin, winners of the Hoops Award and Carter Family Community Champion Award respectively. The Hoops Award is awarded to the player making the best values based contribution to the club, and is voted on by players, AFLW staff and coaches. Darby returned to the group in 2022 as a train-on partner, making the most of her opportunity as a replacement player for Renee Garing. The Carter Family Community Champion Award is presented to the players that have provided outstanding commitment to community, both for the Geelong Cats and via her relationships and engagement with community-based organisations, programs, campaigns and initiatives. Rankin was hailed for setting an outstanding example for the club with her commitment to the Cats Community programs, particularly in the inclusion and accessibility space. Amy McDonald.

Plenty of medals at The Aussies Lifesavers from across Geelong and the Surf Coast have made their clubs proud at the 2022 Australian Lifesaving Championships, with plenty of silverware and strong results. Geelong-Surf Coast athletes brought home five gold, two silver and three bronze medals across the water, lifesaving and surf boat disciplines, as well as making more than 40 Australian finals. Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club was a triple threat in the rescue and resuscitation event, winning gold in the open female five person, open mixed five person and open mixed six person events. Lorne SLSC’s Tristan Read also picked up a gold medal in the 45-49 year old men’s two kilometre ocean swim event. Arno D’Andrea from Fairhaven SLSC was his club’s sole medallist at the championships and the region’s most successful beach athlete, claiming bronze in the under 17 male beach sprint. Other medallists included Anglesea SLSC’s Sam Hume picking up silver in the 45-49 year old men’s two kilometre run, Jan Juc’s
Benjamin Lund claiming bronze in the 35-39 year old men’s two kilometre ocean swim and Lorne SLSC’s Jude Enticott earning a bronze medal in the under 17 male shortboard surfing. Sophie Thomas of Torquay SLSC was also successful, making two open finals in the board and surf disciplines, racing in a field filled with champions from the Ironwoman Series such as Georgia Miller, Harriet Brown and Lana Rogers. The region also continued its history of a strong presence in the surf boat events, with masters women Lorne Again winning gold and masters men Jan Juc SLSC Rams taking silver in their respective divisions, and Anglesea SLSC Lightning qualifying for the open women’s final, finishing in sixth place. It wasn’t just the athletes who were successful, with three local officials receiving milestone service awards from Surf Life Saving Australia. Torquay SLSC’s Rod Costa was recognised for achieving 40 years of service, Graham Rice – a member of Lorne SLSC and Kurrawa SLSC in Queensland – for 30 years of service, and William Johnson from Torquay for 20
years of service. Life Saving Victoria general manager education, sport and club development Kate Simpson said she was thoroughly impressed with the efforts by all Victorian athletes, officials, coaches, team managers and the other volunteers and supporters who attended The Aussies. “As the biggest event on the lifesaving sport calendar, and comparable in size to the Commonwealth Games, it takes an incredible amount of work from our volunteers to get to The Aussies,” she said. “To see our Geelong-Surf Coast athletes performing so well across water, beach, lifesaving and surf boat disciplines, balancing their chosen sport with volunteering to keep Victorians safe at our beaches, is incredibly impressive.” Although the summer is over, lifesaving sports are continuing, with the pool lifesaving season starting last month and the inflatable rescue boat racing season kicking off at the end of April.
Geelong will regain its captain and reigning best and fairest winner in time for its Easter Monday clash with Hawthorn. Joel Selwood will return to the side after being managed against Brisbane while Tom Stewart has recovered from gastro, which saw him which saw him pulled from the team just ahead of the bounce on Friday night. In other good news for the Cats, Quinton Narkle has avoided serious damage to his ankle after his foot was caught under the leg of Patrick Dangerfield in the third term against the Lions. However Geelong general manager of football Simon Lloyd said it was unlikely he would be fit to play against Hawthorn. “He suffered a lateral ligament injury on the weekend. There was no fracture or syndesmosis injury,” Lloyd said. “We expect him not to be available this week but then we’ll weigh up how he’s going across his rehabilitation markers over the coming weeks. “His timeline will be dependent on his response to rehab as he commences reloading.” Lloyd said Esava Ratugolea would be a test to return this week after injuring his ankle against Collingwood in round two. “Following his left ankle sprain, he trained last week and was very close to playing against Brisbane,” Lloyd said. “We’ll assess how he’s training this week and a decision will be made as to his availability later in the week.” Lloyd also said Gary Rohan had impressed on the training track after returning to the main group following an extended stretch on the sidelines with back and hip sciatica. “Gary is completing part of main football training and he’s training well,” Lloyd said. “He’s working through a significant conditioning block.” Lloyd said several first years Cats were also dealing with injuries. Toby Conway is part training as he returns from a hip injury, while James Willis (knee) has resumed running and Flynn Kroeger should return to full training next week. Ash Bolt

Junior premiers crowned LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers The delayed summer season for Tennis Geelong’s junior pennant culminated with 25 grand finals played across the association last weekend, with 16 clubs competing. There was a good spread of clubs taking home their section flags, with many of the traditional larger clubs making way for the emerging ones. Barwon Heads had a successful day winning four of its six finals. The club showed its depth in the junior ranks winning at both ends of the boys’ competition with Section 1 and Section 15, along with Sections 8 and 12, with 15 winning through as champions. Section 3 and 5 girls competed well but went down 4-2 and 3-3 by two games respectively. Jack and Olivia Remilton pulled off a family double with Jack part of the winning Barwon Heads’ Section 1 team, and Olivia undefeated in singles and doubles, lead her Section 3 girls team to the win for Drysdale. Drysdale took a trifecta with wins in Section 2, 3 and 4 girls, with both 2 and 4 bouncing back after losing the first semi-finals in each, to become premiers winning 4-2 and 6-0 respectively.

The combination team with Clifton Springs also backed up its minor premiership in Section 9 boys having a 5-1 win over Geelong Lawn. Geelong Lawn had 12 of 18 teams make finals this season. Eight made it through to Saturday and Section 4, 6 and 14 boys prevailed on the day, all with four sets to two wins. St Mary’s had a great day chalking up four victories, in girls’ Section 7, 8, 10 and boys’ Section 10, and barely missed five from five with Section 13 boys going down by six games at three sets all to Highton, with Section 7 girls going through as champions. Highton had a quiet day with three teams

playing, and the one win in Section 13 boys. Grovedale also had a quiet day notching up the one win, taking the Section 1 girls’ title, while going down to Ocean Grove 4-2 in Section 3 boys. The Grove took two of its three matches with Section 11 boys also taking its match 4-2. All Saints’ girls did their club proud taking home Section 6 and 9 premierships, while Section 6 boys fought hard, but went down 4-2. Point Lonsdale continues to improve its presence in the competition with three teams making it through to the final day. Section 10 girls and Section 15 boys put up a good fight but went down 4-2, while Section 5 boys won a nail-biter at three sets all with a three game advantage over Centre Court. Moriac took out Section 2 boys with a convincing win over Wandana Heights 5-1, Inverleigh’s Section 5 girls backed up its win in last summer’s Section 5, winning as champions in a close three sets all two game win, and Surfcoast Jan Juc’s Section 7 boys clinched a tight one against St Mary’s three sets all and six games. The season finished well, and with the winter season just around the corner, players are looking forward to getting back on the court for more great tennis.

Pinky snapper holding in good numbers ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos Inside the Corio Bay is still continuing to produce some top fishing and with Good Friday here it’s a great time to get some fresh fillets for the table. Pinky snapper continue to hold good numbers right through the region with the northern part of the bay fishing well. The area known as Bird Rock has been holding some nice fish to about two kilograms with bait and soft plastics picking them up. King George whiting are also well spread out through the bay with good reports coming from Stingaree Bay, Hermsley, Clifton Springs and Portarlington. Fishing the run out tide has been by far most productive with pipis proving to be the standout bait. Calamari also have been holding close to the shores of the Bellarine Peninsula with Clifton Springs yet again the current hotspot with the pier fishing very well at night. The tuna off Barwon Heads have had a little bit of a fight back with some great reports coming through with plenty of fish still out there. The 60 metre line has been super productive with fish eating divers, skirts top water and jigs. The fish have been moving pretty quickly so follow the birds and you will find the fish. The bottom fishing has also been quite productive with gummy sharks and snapper biting quite well along the 40 metre line, baits such as fresh squid and salmon have been most productive.Port Fairy has been on fire with an insane barrel tuna bite out the front. From straight south of Port Fairy to Julia Percy Island on the 55 metre line there has been fish ranging from 15kg through to 150kg.The fish have been eating a variety of lures and different techniques with a deep divers proving to be the most productive.Skirted lures have also been producing plenty of fish and so too have stick baits when the fish are on the surface slamming schools of redbait worked up to the top. Wurdi Buloc Reservoir has continued to fish well for trout and redfin with anglers having great success casting from the rock walls. Spoon style lures have been a standout as it allows for a long cast covering lots of water.Shallow diving jerk baits have also been getting plenty of fish, more so trout, but they have been lethal. Duo Realis 80 and Megabass X70s have been standout lures to throw.
Fanning, Fitzgibbons avoid early exit Australian surfing champions Mick Fanning and Sally Fitzgibbons have survived early eliminations from the Rip Curl Pro. Competition moved from Bells Beach to Winkipop on Tuesday and Fanning and Fitzgibbons both found themelves in trouble after poor results in their heats. In his heat on Monday, Fanning was upset by World Surf League championship tour rookie Samuel Pupo and Felipe Toledo, finishing third with a score of disappointing score of 6.73. The loss put him into the elimination round on Tuesday against Morgan Cibilic and Seth Moniz. The four-time Bells winner found redemption on day two of competition and showed flashes of brilliance on the way to claiming the second progressing spot behind Cibilic. Fanning’s 11.90 in the elimination round was enough to put him above Moniz, who finished with 8.90, and moved him onto a clash with 22 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 15 April, 2022
world number one Kanoa Igarashi in the round of 32. “[Monday] was a bit embarrassing on my behalf, so it was nice to go out to go out and get some waves,” Fanning said. “It was cool coming up against Morgan (Cibilic) and Seth (Moniz) – two kids I absolutely love and cheer for on Tour. But, I’m stoked to click into gear. “Winki is good, it’s different to Bells, but I love it just as much and always have fun surfing heats out there.” Two-time Bells winner and Australian World Title hopeful Fitzgibbons also found herself in the elimination round after losing a tight heat. Fitzgibbons scored 13.06 in her heat, but was outscored by Australian Bronte Macaulay and Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb. She returned later on Tuesday for the elimination, where she took the win and booked a place in the round of 16.
It was an important win, with Fitzgibbons needing a good result at the Rip Curl Pro to maintain her place on the championship tour for the second half of the season. “After my first heat, I had another chance, paddled out with a fresh start, and just enjoyed my experience no matter what,” Fitzgibbons said. “When you put your heart and soul into your surfing and sometimes don’t have scores come your way or the results don’t flow, it can sometimes break your spirits a bit and that’s when you dig deep and trust in the work you’ve put in. “I’m so comfortable down here and love competing here so it’s good to be back.” There was mixed results on Tuesday for the local surfers, with India Robinson moving through to the round of 16 after placing second in her heat, while Tully Wylie was knocked out in his elimination round.
