Housing push Spirit of the Anzacs
The Federal Election is right around the corner - set for Saturday, 21 May - and local candidates are sharing how they will ensure housing is affordable for La Trobe residents. Melbourne residents are currently experiencing a record low number of rental properties available, according to Domain’s March vacancy rate report. Liberal La Trobe candidate Jason Wood said he understood the rental market was very challenging for many Victorians. Labor Candidate for La Trobe Abi Kumar said the Federal Government should construct more housing supply to counter the current rental shortage and Greens La Trobe candidate Michael Schilling said an estimated 2,230 new affordable homes were needed in Cardinia Shire. “This critical shortage places a huge amount of stress on our local families, which then has a ripple effect impacting the ability to afford utilities and food,” Mr Schilling said. Oval not safe Beaconsfield’s Perc Allison Reserve is now closed to the public as light poles pose a danger to user groups. A Cardinia Shire Council audit has found two light poles are in need of repair before the reserve can be considered safe. Victorian Government’s Department of Environment, Land, Water, and Planning (DELWP) will be managing the repair while the park is temporarily closed. “DELWP requested council temporarily cordon off the site until the repair works can be scheduled,” council’s general manager liveable communities Lili Rosic said. Council will be keeping local clubs informed on when the reserve will reopen. STORY PAGE 5
