Hemp bid thrown out at tribunal
Mick’s legacy On Saturday, almost five years after he lost his life in a tragic road accident, the legacy of former Casey mayor and longtime councillor Mick Morland was set in stone. His widow Kay and family members joined former council colleagues, administrators and friends at the official opening of the Mick Morland Legacy Link and Recreation Reserve in Clyde North. The link is a dedicated walkway between the Manna Gum Community Centre, Cardinia Creek and the recreation reserve, home to the Berwick Springs football, netball and cricket clubs and the Melbourne Flash Sports Club. Inscribed on the pathway are the words Community, Participation, Sport and Nature - all synonymous with Mick’s contribution over the years. STORY PAGES 18-19
A couple’s dream to turn industrial hemp into sustainable building material at a farm in Vervale has been knocked back by the state’s planning tribunal. The land owners had hoped to build a 500sqm shed and four bedroom caretaker’s house on the eight hectare lot, which sits in a ’horticultural preservation’ zone, but in the ruling VCAT member Judith Perlstein said she did not believe the dwelling was required for the type of operation proposed. Growing hemp as a crop does not require a permit. STORY PAGE 9
Firefighters lose out Pakenham’s fire preparedness is under threat following a lack of funding in the Victorian Budget 2022-23, according to the United Firefighters Union (UFU). “This is not about wages and allowances for firefighters – this is about the tools and training that firefighters need to save lives and property,” UFU secretary Peter Marshall said. He said Fire Rescue Victoria Pakenham was in need of more personnel and equipment to keep up with the areas continuing growth. STORY PAGE 4

Pauline’s ghosts Across Victoria’s South East, some of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation federal candidates have proven elusive and at times, untraceable. Gazette journalists were unable to reach One Nation’s Hadden Ervin, who is listed second on the ballot draw for La Trobe for the 21 May elec-

ty in Townsville, Qld. Although candidates do not have to legally live in the electorate they are standing for, let alone the same state, it does bring into question the ability of the candidate to effectively represent the local area.
This comes amid allegations of One Nation fielding ‘ghost candidates’, where candidates with no traceable online presence or connection to an electoral seat they are standing in and often live interstate. STORIES PAGES 6-7
