Wood a firm favourite

She said yes Jerby Teatro knew becoming an Australian citizen was an important day for his family. He and his daughter Miracle were set to take their pledge, with partner Aileen cheering them on from the crowd. But wanting to make the moment special, Jerby decided to pop the question to Aileen immediately after being declared an Aussie. STORY PAGE 9

With the federal election set for Saturday 21 May, the finals days to brush up on the policies of Australia’s political parties have arrived. Pakenham’s pre-polling venues have been busy this week with Cardinia Shire residents taking the opportunity to vote early. La Trobe candidates say are feeling confident in how their campaigns are coming along. When the election campaign began, the race between Liberal candidate Jason Wood and his Labor opponent Abi Kumar was considered an even money bet at $1.90 but Mr Wood’s odds of winning have trimmed significantly to $1.35, while Labor has blown out to a $3 proposition. Loss of lilies Locals have expressed their sadness that a picturesque Pakenham pond has become a “litter infected wasteland” after years of apparent neglect. The Henty Lily Pond on Duncan Drive was a jewel in Pakenham’s crown when it opened over 30 years ago but now according to passionate local advocate Cheryl Billing Smith the pond is an “eyesore”. The adjacent Lilypond Community House is also show signs of decline, longtime maintenance manager Jim Stone said. He said it was disappointing to see the centre outshone by newly built facilities in other areas of the district. Calls to improve the area have been voiced. STORY PAGE 17

Hospital in crisis Hospitals in the South East are currently among the lowest performing hospitals in Melbourne, according to the Victorian Agency of Health Information. Emergency patients triaged as category 2 and in need of urgent care are recommended to be treated within 10 minutes but patients

are not being seen within the benchmark. Only 20 per cent of Casey Hospital category 2 emergency patients were seen within the benchmark, 34 per cent at Dandenong Hospital and 17.5 per cent at Monash Medial Centre. With the federal election this Saturday 21 May, La Trobe candidates are sharing how they

plan to ease the pressure on the regions health systems. Liberal candidate Jason Wood says Casey Hospital’s Paediatric Emergency Centre will reduce the demand for emergency services by half while Labor candidate Abi Kumar says Medicare Urgent Care Clinics will free up

nurses and doctors for life threatening presentations. Australasian College for Emergency Medicine president Clare Skinner said emergency department overcrowding has been “building for many years”. STORY PAGE 3
