Vandals strike

Josh’s journey

Local green thumbs are reeling after their community gardens were vandalised over the weekend. The school community of Cardinia Primary School worked hard to build a sustainability garden for the students’ science classes and were shocked to discover someone had stolen a Subpod, birdbath, cacti and four large bags of potting mix straight from the garden. Assistant principal Trudie Esler said a lot of work went into getting the garden up and running. “We used grants to build the garden and we were only finishing it last Monday,” she said. Garden members of the Hills Community Garden in Cockatoo were also disturbed to find their signage torn out of the ground and damaged. STORY PAGE 2

In January 2022, David Cox and Jessica Bennett received news they couldn’t believe they were hearingtheir eight year old son Josh had leukaemia. As managers of the Lang Lang Palace Hotel, David, Jess and Josh have received an outpouring of support from the community. STORY PAGE 5

Fix killer road Gembrook MP Brad Battin has put his support behind a local constituent in a bid to make a notorious intersection safer for pedestrians and motorists. Shaun Grewal, who lives in Berwick, is petitioning with Mr Battin to install a set of traffic lights at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Coniston Avenue, near Wilson Botanic Park, believing people are “risking their lives” by crossing the busy highway. Mr Grewal said he moved to the area about a year ago and was shocked to see there were no traffic lights between Wilson Botanic Park and the highway, which sees thousands of cars each day travelling at speeds of 80 kilometres per hour. In 2017, former City of Casey mayor and councillor Mick Morland was hit and killed by a car as he crossed the busy thoroughfare on his evening walk. STORY PAGE 7

Carriage ban blow A Bunyip business owner doesn’t know how he’ll stay afloat once a ban is implemented on horse-drawn carriages in Melbourne’s CBD. Later this month, it will be illegal to operate horse-drawn carriages in the Hoddle grid- the

area bound by Flinders Street, Spring Street, La Trobe Street and Spencer Street. But Dean Crichton of Unique Carriage Hire, who has been offering carriage rides in Melbourne for over 30 years said his livelihood would be destroyed by the ban, which he deems as unfair.

“We haven’t had an accident in 35 years, we’ve never hurt a member of the public, we’ve never done any damage,“ Mr Crichton said. “So if you’re banning me for being unsafe [to traffic] can you give me an example? “If there were accidents, I would be thinking maybe this isn’t a place for me, but you’re

kicking someone out with a perfect record.” Mr Crichton is aware of the animal welfare concerns some activist groups hold for his industry, but he believes what he does is safe and poses no harm to his horses. STORY PAGE 3
