Autumn escape to Portland Ruth Feeney THE Probus Club of Ballarat South has just returned from a week at Portland with about 50 members staying at Portland Holiday Village in caravans, cabins and even a tent! Managers Denise and Phil looked after the club so well, and even supplied dessert for the first night. The Park is very central and members were able to walk to most places, including supermarkets, coffee shops, restaurants, and lots of retail shops. Portland was Victoria’s first European settlement and has so much to see and do. We had a ride on the vintage cable tram along the historic foreshore and heard all about the local attractions. We were even served a delicious light lunch afterwards at the tram depot. On another day we headed out to Bridgewater Bay for walks, brunch/lunch, and then on to see the Petrified Forest, Blowholes, Seal Colony, Bridgewater lakes and Tarragal limestone Caves. We met with a local guide at the Marine Discovery Centre and he told us all about the industry at the Port. It is Victoria’s only naturally deep-water port, and handles seven commodities, including sustainable forestry products ,livestock, grain, mineral sands, fertiliser, smelter products and wind turbines.

Members of the Probus Club of Ballarat South enjoy a boat cruise at Nelson. Later in the week some members played golf at Portland Golf Club and enjoyed the fun. Another highlight was a boat cruise on the Glenelg River at Nelson. We learnt a lot about the birds, wildlife, flora and fauna from our captain, and enjoyed a Devonshire tea onboard. Most nights we had happy hour at the Park and discussed our plans for the next day. We must thank Noreen and Brian who organised our trip for a job well done! Our members are such a happy friendly group and enjoyed lots of laughs. We certainly lived up to the Probus motto of Fun, Fellowship and Friendship. Can’t wait for our spring getaway.

Three in one outing for Ballarat South THE Probus Club of Ballarat South enjoyed a three in one excursion close to home. Twenty-five members travelled to Spring Park Nursery at Eganstown in the morning where the owners provided members with cuppas and treats before telling all about their family nursery and answering lots of questions on gardening. Members then adjourned to the Swiss Mountain Hotel at Blampied for lunch. The hotel opened especially for the club and served yummy meals. The final stop was at Overwrought Sculpture Gallery nearby. It was interesting to learn all about their business and the staff they employ. The sculptures are wonderful, so varied and so interesting. They also sell lots of artisan works and Australian made products. Some of the members also enjoyed coffees and snacks there afterwards. Thanks to members Chris, Steve and Cathryn for organising the day out. It certainly was great to look around their neighbourhood and see what happens nearby.

Celebrating 23 years COVER STORY THE Probus Club of Cerberus Combined is a large and very active club and its 23rd birthday was celebrated recently. It meets at the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron clubrooms and every month enjoys beautiful views over Port Philip Bay. President Diana Barry says that the club is bouncing back from the difficulties of Covid and is maintaining a membership of 93. One of the club’s popular activities has been the Music Afternoons. For more than 12 years their Music Man, Barry Arnold has used his hi-fi gear to present great music four or five times a year. Programs range from popular classics to trad-jazz and everything in between. Promotional flyers for these events are prepared by Shirley Bean who continues to use her skills in this way. In April, members had a lot of fun when many dressed as “hippies” for the music of “The Swinging Sixties” and David and Lynda Judkins won the prize for the best outfit.

Shirley Bean received a small presentation at a recent afternoon for all her excellent promotional flyers over the years.

Overnight trip to Sale a success THE City of Sale is 209 kms south-east of Melbourne on the Princes Highway, just 100 kms from Warragul. It was settled mostly during the gold rush years of the 1850s, and today is the gateway to the Gippsland Lakes. A bus load of club members spent two days there recently on an overnight trip to this very lovely, historical city. On the way there they stopped to inspect the famous ’Swing Bridge’, about 5 kms from Sale. Built in 1883 it was designed by J.H. Grainger, the father of the composer, Percy Grainger. The ’Port of Sale’, was created in 1883 when a canal was built to link Sale to the Thomson River and the Gippsland Lakes. So, the next very misty morning, our club members boarded the MV Rubeena for a cruise of the Port and canal. This allowed them to visit the Museum of Timeless Memories, which housed a remarkable range of antiques and collectables and memories of the pioneering past of this area. We lunched in the Botanic Gardens, watched by some parading peacocks, and viewed the historic Powder Magazine

All with the march of time ON Wednesday 19 May, the Probus Club of Mitchell River [Bairnsdale] celebrated 30 years since the club’s inception in 1992. Mr Lance Newman initiated the first moves to form a new club and finally in June 1992 the charter was presented to Lance – as the club’s first president. Since 1992 the Mitchell River Probus Club has been actively providing members with fun, fellowship and friendship by way of informative guest speakers, a wide variety of activities and many social dining out occasions. Even with Covid lockdowns, the club has had an active 12 months with highlights throughout East Gippsland, including a visit to the renowned St Mary’s Catholic Church in Bairnsdale; a visit to the Archibald Prize Exhibition at its regional exhibition at the Sale Art Gallery; the 2022 Australian Wood Design Exhibition at the Orbost Exhibition Centre; a visit to Briagalong Mechanics Institute established in 1874 with it many irreplaceable antiques including the original library housing books over 100 years old; a visit to the Beaufort Gardens Memorial. The Memorial and Walkway located in the hospital precincts and opposite the R.S.L., is a place of reflection in memory of the young men and women who lost their lives while training and carrying out operations in WWII.

Fun at March Fellowship Day Pamela Duthie TWENTY Combined Probus Club of Belmont members and visitors spent a couple of hours together enjoying the fellowship and beauty of this great nature park, in Wadawurrung Country off Melaluka Road, Leopold, opposite Bunnings on 21 March. It was a lovely setting for just such a day and the weather was perfect. Trip organiser, Helen Barry, brought out her Guess How Many Toothpicks Jar to add to the fun. After having morning tea together, many took a walk to explore the rambling tracks to the lake area with its birdlife and spectacular gum trees. A swan or two could be seen next to ducks and water hen searching for food amongst the water lilies. A few tiny wrens flitted on the open grassland. One or two young-at-heart members explored the wonderful adventure playground. Citrus suddenly appeared from nowhere, eager to meet Ron Cashin, winner of the toothpick guessing competition. Around noon everyone departed in cars to travel down to Ocean Grove Bowls Club on the coast about a quarter of an hour away where they each ordered a lovely $15, two-course seniors meal from the many choices. The service was great and each table was supplied with two jugs of cool drinks and glasses. We’ll definitely be back!

Fellowship and fun PROBUS delivers friendship, fellowship and fun. Suburban Probus Clubs provide companionship and activities for more than 100,000 senior and active retirees, men and women. Clyde Woods is the president of the Moorleigh Probus in Bentleigh East. He shared how Probus changed his life “I cared for my wife until she died four years ago. I was devastated and at a total loss about the rest of my life”. he said. “A friend suggested I try the nearby Moorleigh Probus Club. “As a visitor with no real expectations, I was amazed. I was made

welcome as a guest and heard about the bus outings, lunches and hobby groups. “Next, I heard the guest speaker describe his bicycle trip around the world. “I even won a meat tray! “At cuppa time I was introduced to many future friends. I thought, this is for me. “During Covid I was never lonely as friends were as close as the phone and computer. Now, I have a purpose in life.” To find your local Probus Club, contact 1300 630 488, email admin@ probussouthpacific.org or use the club finder at probussouthpacific.org

All aboard for Puffing Billy All aboard! lake. All too soon it was time to board the train for our return trip, waving again to motorists who had stopped at the level crossings, the toddlers and mums with pushers who came out to see the train and the backyard gardeners who were enjoying the autumn sunshine. The day reminded us of all the things we enjoy about Probus and what we have been missing. It was a delight to be out and about again, sharing each other’s company and having fun as we ventured somewhere new. Last month in our outing we travelled by ferry, in April we travelled by train, what will be next?

Photo opportunities were popular.

LAST month Blackburn South Ladies Club travelled by ferry to Williamstown for the day but for our April outing we changed travel mode completely. It was all aboard the Puffing Billy steam train as 16 members ventured into the Dandenongs on a glorious autumn day. As we readied to depart, we were told that today was special as it happened to be Ladies Day. Lucky us! The downside of this revelation being that if the train needed a bit of a push at any stage, we were the team. The train was full, and conductor Bruce provided a commentary on the history of the line and alerted us to photo opportunities. For over an hour the train chuffed its way over the amazing wooden trestle bridge, past the site of the 1953 landslide and through the beautiful rainforest and bush. The fern gullies and tall Mountain Ash trees were dotted with magnificent deciduous trees in autumnal shades as the train passed through the picturesque towns of Selby, Menzies Creek and Emerald on its way to Lakeview Station. We had lunch at the recently opened visitor dentre and explored the museum and the lovely grounds surrounding the

15 years of fellowship and fun PARTY hats were the fashion of the day for the Bunyip-Garfield Probus Club as we celebrated our 15th birthday at the annual general meeting in April. The outgoing president thanked all her committee before the new president was inducted. Looking back, our history started with Rotary placing a notice in the local newsletter for a meeting to see if anyone was interested in starting a Probus Club where fellow retirees meet monthly to make new friends. Rotary held a meeting in the Garfield Hall with locals and after much discussion it was decided to form the Bunyip-Garfield Probus Club. So, a committee was formed and our first meeting was held in April 2007. Our speakers have covered many different topics with great outings including bus trips to Melbourne to see a show or two. Our first caravan and camping trip was to Bairnsdale for a week and we continue to visit towns like Bright, Merimbula, Marong with our next being to Swan Hill. There have been other trips to Mildura by train, King Island, and a cruise on the Murray River in South Australia. We have a few activity groups within the club which meet monthly such as walking group, coffee morning, old film showings and craft. Our club was affected like everyone with the Covid lockdowns, but we are back and enjoying activities with over 100 members. Anyone is welcome to join us. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at the

Induction of the new president.

Garfield Community Hall at 10am. Our celebrations continued with a birthday cake for morning tea. Our foundation committee members had the task of blowing out the candles before photos were taken of all other foundation members who were all acknowledged by our president and a round of applause by current members. We then all enjoyed a piece of the cake before going out to lunch at the Carvery King at Drouin. To all members past and present, you all have helped in making our club very successful, so thank you!

Calling for new members Mikayla Van Loon THE Lilydale Probus Club has been keeping retirees connected and active for nearly 40 years, a history that has seen a few changes in its time but never in its ethos. Sticking to the Probus handbook’s purpose statement, “to provide for its members regular opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends,” vice president Rhonda Watson said it is really important for retirees to have places to go and people to see outside their normal interactions. “We do find a lot of our members retire and live in retirement homes, which means they’re gathering with all retired people in that one group,” she said. “Quite a few of them over the years have decided ‘no, we want more than just the people we live with and the activities provided by the retirement home. We want to expand our interests and join a Probus club’.” Initially formed as a men’s club in 1983, it became a combined membership opportunity for men and women in 2013, where now the majority of members are women, something the committee would like to see change. “We want to try and get the mix right,” Ms Watson said. “We do find it is more women that are willing to come and try something new. Whereas the men are a little bit more hesitant.” With members getting older and unable to attend meetings and gatherings, Ms Watson said numbers have dwindled to about 76. “We’re trying to encourage new retirees. We wouldn’t discourage anybody. We will accept anybody but we encourage new retirees because there are positions that need to be held and operated through the meeting,” Ms Watson said. “We’d like to alternate [the presidency] through the men and the women and keep it 50/50 if we can.”

While Covid-19 did have some impact on people not returning to the club, Ms Watson said age has wearied people and that’s why they would like to see some younger retirees coming through. Activity coordinator Len Pearse said there is something for everyone and the program this year has included some new items like an overnight trip to Geelong. Regular group walks called ‘ramblers’ take members to a different locations each month to walk and talk along a scenic track, often near the Yarra River. The ladies meet every second month for a Probus Pals morning tea, while the gents meet twice a month for their catch up over lunch. Trips to the theatre, dinners, monthly meetings and dress up days for the football grand final and spring carnival, as well as educational talks from people like the Macular Disease Foundation provide fun and variety. Wanting everyone to be able to attend what they can, the Ringwood East Bendigo Bank community bus can pick people up or carpooling is often on offer. Mr Pearse said once a year members from the club also go on what they call a ‘car trip’ to a regional centre somewhere in Victoria. “It was great this year. We had 31 come along and it gets everybody together. We find that at the meetings you might only have 10 or 15 minutes to talk to people but you don’t get to know people properly in that time,” Ms Watson said. “Whereas going away together, spending that week together, you make an effort with whoever’s there, you’ll just start talking and it might just be about the previous day’s activities or the activities coming up but you’re still talking and finding out about each other.” Ms Watson said the friendships Probus allows people to make is certainly the biggest draw card for anyone thinking about joining but also the range of activities. “We’ve formed other little friendship groups within Probus and this is what we’re all looking for, to reach out and broaden our friendship circle.”

Enjoy making connections Marie Baxter Speaker Convenor AUTUMN has been a busy season for us all, with our regular routines broken to celebrate the F1 Grand Prix, Easter, the school holidays and Anzac Day in style. Quite a change in pace for many of us! During this time, many of our members caught up at Tosaria’s in Rowville for our bi-monthly brunch. It is always great to let staff do the cooking and clearing away whilst we chill out and share information about our most recent escapades. In March, Val Graham presided over the election of our 2022-23 committee at our annual general meeting, welcoming Val Poll to the position of president after Jan Waters retired from the role which she had competently undertaken for the past two years. Many existing members were re-elected to key roles, and certificates were presented to Marion Burles and Jo Robinson for their committee contributions over the past 10 and five years respectively. We would also like to express our thanks to Jan McDonald for her service as speaker convenor during a very challenging two years when many cancellations and re-bookings had to be made during lockdowns. Our AGM concluded with a very professional and polished concert of familiar songs presented by The Frankston Ladies Choir under the baton of Simon Walters.

Enjoying the train carriage cafe. At our April meeting, Clif Hardy entertained us with tales of his life at sea. Clif joined the Merchant Navy as a deckhand when only 18 years of age and, over the years, rose in rank to travel the world in the capacity of 2nd Officer Navigator. During May, we all had a great day out at the Mount Evelyn Garden Centre where a delicious Devonshire Tea was enjoyed in their refurbished train-carriage cafe, and plants galore admired and purchased from their nursery precinct. Also, at our regular May meeting, we held a bring and buy sale where many

pre-loved treasures were exchanged while we enjoyed a delicious morning tea treat provided by the committee. As we experience the chillier weather of winter, our newly elected committee hopes the remainder of the year will continue to provide further opportunities for our club to blossom, old friendships to be sustained and new social connections made. Our speakers for June, July and August, will be Nadia Porter, editor of The Rowville Lysterfield News who will speak of her family’s early experiences as refugees, John Howard, author of The Only Woman at

Gallipoli, and Susan Hayward-Downward, a collector of various memorabilia which will remind us of an era when folk had fewer mod-cons than in today’s society, yet still seemed to get by well enough. We are always open to welcoming new members, so please give Jo a call on 0414 491 091 to express your interest. We meet from 10am until noon, on the third Wednesday of the month, upstairs at The Wantirna Club 350 Stud Road. There is a lift, and often several members stay on for an informal seniors lunch in the bistro. See You There!

After Eleven forty seven! Michael B Halley reviewed by Melissa Jones HAD the Black Saturday conflagration not started at Kilmore East and spread to the farm of Kevin and Rhonda Butler, the story of BlazeAid may not be ours to hear. But it did, and the story continues 13 years on. At the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea meeting on 2 May, Melissa Jones operations manager of BlazeAid Inc gave members an overview of the then, and now, of the corralling of volunteers to join together and start the rebuilding of communities devastated by natural disasters. On the morning of 7 February 2009, north westerly winds in excess of 100 kilometres per hour scoured Victoria, bringing hot, dry air from Central Australia. The storm helped to create the almost perfect fire conditions, and when the winds brought down powerlines at 11.47am in Kilmore East, the resulting sparks ignited the fire. Out of adversity comes opportunity is a quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin, now brought to life by BlazeAid. On that fateful day Kevin and Rhonda Butler, were among those whose properties were burnt. [Arguably the first] Needing to quickly secure their 1500 sheep, they sought assistance from family, friends and local volunteers to help refence their paddocks. Many of the Probus members were affected in the fires and are still scarred by their personal involvement. But Melissa showed her understanding of the underlying traumas of not only the disaster, but the undertaking to return victims to some semblance of reality. Ironically some communities that BlazeAid have helped rebuild have been devastated not by fire, but its arch enemy rain. In all, 173 people tragically lost their lives, 414 were injured, more than a million wild and domesticated animals were lost and 450,000 hectares of land were burned on Black Saturday. The formation of the unique volunteer army was the way that the Butlers decided to thank their helpers, and offer assistance to communities beyond Kilmore East. The first assembly point was at the Butlers’ Woolshed where locals and visitors heeding the pleas turned up shovel-ready. Kevin had placed an advert in the Kilmore Free Press and 25 volunteers came to the first assembly. Rhonda fed everyone breakfast and dinner and provided a cut lunch, with the costs covered by their family. Rotary became involved and took over the financing which was assisted by donations. Melissa explained that they shy away from red tape and have had minimal interaction with government, relying on donations from the public and organisations keen to give back. As the weeks passed it became a multicultural community with interstate and overseas volunteers dropping in and taking on the tasks. People from all points of the compass were seen and heard at breakfast, and at the end of the day’s work. The evenings in the Woolshed around the pot belly stove are legendary. The time-frame allocated was 12 weeks, but as word spread about the happenings at Kilmore East, others wanted a piece of the action and 13 years on, the assistance packages are still being rolled out.

Kevin and Rhonda Butler. Some of the developments since 2007 were advised: 163 BlazeAid Camps established 200 combat ready trailers set up and stored strategically Value of contributions exceeds AU$300 million 16,500 kilometres of damaged fence removed 16,000 kilometres of fences replaced. 35,000 volunteers signed on [Aged four94, average 60 years] Backpackers isolated in Australia due to Covid given assistance Currently there are a total of 12 camps running throughout Australia, nine of which are in NSW and Queensland working on replenishment after the devastating floods. The camp coordinator makes the decision as to what happens at each farm. A fact hard to believe was related - the crew on one relief boat working in the flood areas was almost hit by overheard power lines which are the main transmission lines along a highway. One family isolated in a tree was fortunate when a passing boat got tangled in debris which shut the motor and allowed their plaintive cries to be heard. Recent new functions of BlazeAid are the post and wire drive where the public are encouraged to purchase fencing materials. Almost impossible to insure, fences are expensive to replace. It takes the equivalent of one person/week to clear a damaged fence at a cost of $2500 and then $10,000 to replace it. As well, since 2020 there is a tree planting program which has a double-barrel environmental affect. Tree replacement is easily understood, but using recycled plastic support stakes is something new. There is also an associated program assisting farmers to re-establish grass on paddocks denuded by fire or flood. Melissa made a statement that reputation is the greatest asset, those who listened to her presentation would totally agree.

Descending on Bendigo LIKE bees to a honeypot, over forty members of the Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club descended on Bendigo, drawn by the lure of fun times with friends and poised for a range of activities thoughtfully and carefully arranged by our Caravan and Cabin Guru Bill. DAY ONE was arrival day, which saw us navigate the boom gate code system with varying degrees of success, comfortably settle into our accommodation at the ‘Gold Nugget Tourist Park’, enjoy happy hour, and later dinner at the nearby Huntly Hotel. DAY TWO was a day of a little less conversation, a little more action for most of us as we put on our blue, blue, blue suede shoes and rock’n’rolled our way to the Bendigo Art Gallery all the while thinking its now or never to learn all about the life and times of the hunk, a hunk of burning love that was Elvis Aaron Presley. The beautifully curated exhibition focussed mainly on his young, handsome and exciting glory days and consigned the less attractive aspects of his life to the history books. An afternoon at leisure saw us all go our separate ways for, shopping, walking, cafe sitting or just relaxing with a good book. DAY THREE, and a tour of Central Deborah Gold Mine a was undertaken by a group of hardy souls who enjoy cold dark enclosed spaces, while the rest of us enjoyed a little extra sunshine before arriving at the mine in time to board our Talking Tram, for a hop on, hop off tour of Bendigo’s tourist attractions. These

attractions included the Chinese Joss House where a range of delicacies had been left there as offerings, such as incense, biscuits, cakes, fruit and even a thoughtfully placed bottle of Guinness for the gods with a thirst and impeccable taste. Lake Weeroona, various restaurants, the CBD, parks and gardens were also enjoyed as we toured the city. Evening saw most of the group dining at the caravan park and expending brain power on a trivia quiz, while a small but enthusiastically hopeful breakaway group of wanna-be ghostbusters did a not surprisingly ‘no ghost’ ghost walking tour of Bendigo after dark where to their dismay, not even Elvis was sighted! DAY FOUR dawned and despite it being the end of daylight saving, and V-Line throwing their worst at us by cancelling our train from Bendigo to Castlemaine, we all arrived at Castlemaine Station on time to board the Goldfields Railway steam train for a slow but enjoyable trundle to the historic town of Maldon where we all made the most of a two hour stop before once again boarding the train for the equally slow haul back to Castlemaine. This evening, after yet another excellent happy hour we enjoyed a beautiful roast meal catered for by a local company and organised for us by the Caravan Park management. DAY FIVE, and we all headed for home. Thank you, to our organiser, Bill, for all the planning and excellent management that made this such an enjoyable few days away.

Neville Crowe’s Legacy NEVILLE Crowe played 151 games for Richmond Football Club, captaining the team from 1963 to 1966; he was a three-time best and fairest winner, All Australian, and seven-time Victorian representative. But more than anything, the former Jack Dyer Medalist, Hall of Fame member, and Richmond President just loved his football club. “Neville Crowe’s Legacy” was created at Richmond to recognise Crowe’s dedication and provide a way for lifelong supporters to make an everlasting contribution to their football club. The bequest program offers generous supporters an opportunity to leave a Gift in their Will, giving their family a chance to keep the roar alive for generations to come. Bequests are invested into an Endowment Fund, building a financially sustainable Club and allowing a Gift to become a legacy remaining in perpetuity. The future of Richmond Football Club is not just about on-field success but the ability to deliver Community Outreach programs. These include Leadership and Sporting programs at the Korin Gamadji Institute, a centre for cultural strength and learning for Indigenous Youth; The Bachar Houli Foundation- which develops young leaders in the Muslim community and Richmond’s Wheelchair Football team. Richmond Football Club is a champion of inclusion, diversity, and helping individuals achieve their goals. Support of the Club extends to all of these programs. The Shrine of Remembrance: A lasting legacy THE Shrine of Remembrance is Victoria’s memorial to the service and sacrifice of Australian men and women in times of war and peacekeeping. Through commemorative services, exhibitions, and education, the Shrine shares the stories of ordinary people in extraordinary times whose efforts and experiences helped shape our nation. The Shrine opened in 1934 to give a grieving community a place to gather in memory of lost loved ones and lives forever changed after the First World War. Although both the Victorian and Commonwealth governments made contributions to the construction of the Shrine, most of the money was raised in a community fundraising campaign launched to help fund the building of the memorial. The original receipts from these donations are still held inside a bronze casket, in the Shrine’s Crypt. As it did then, today the Shrine relies on donations and community support to deliver its purpose of honouring service and sacrifice. A bequest to the Shrine of Remembrance supports the institution’s work in the areas of education, commemoration and remembrance, including: education programs that ensure future generations understand and value the service and sacrifice of past and current service men and women maintaining and enhancing the Shrine and the Shrine Reserve as an active memorial

Cutting the anniversary cake.

Foster and District celebrated its 30th anniversary with a cake.

Foster’s 30th anniversary ON 4 April 2022 Foster and District Probus Club had a very special day for the club. It was their 30th anniversary. After the general meeting, the celebrations began. Barbara, one of our foundation members, and also a life member, showed photos from previous tours, of which there were more than 200. These were shown on TV via a USB stick. She also had photo albums on display and a photo board, thus

bringing back wonderful memories for many members. With the special guests arriving, they were then all seated for their special anniversary lunch provided by the Foster Bowls Club. The dining area was beautifully decorated by Barbara and John. Guests included Bill and Judy Degnan, District Governor for Rotary, Mayor of South Gippsland Shire, Cr Moyah Davies and

husband John, local Rotary representative, Rod and Joan Lomax, and past presidents Liz Hurst, Val Latham and husband Ian, Margaret Hutton and daughter Sharon. Past presidents who are still current members attending as well included, Reg Williams, Reg Jennings, Bill Davies, Sophie Bucello, Ray Black, Trish Middleton, Dawn Hopkins, Charles Middleton, Barbara Black, Noleen McGlead, Liz Hurst, John Carmichael, Gwen Facey, and newly elected president Ann Sim.

Mr Degnan presented new president Ann with a book from Rotary documenting the birth of Probus. Mayor Davies mentioned the importance of staying active in a physical, mental and social way, and that Probus was playing an important part in our local community. The club is lucky to still have seven original foundation members still active within the club, including Reg Williams, and the foundation president.

Together for bus trip Joan Griss THURSDAY 5 May called for warm coats and scarves as 15 senior East Malvern Combined Probus Club members who do not drive had the pleasure of an outing to Wilson Botanical Park in Berwick aboard the Stonnington community bus. Other members drove to the park. The 50-hectare park has stunning lake views, walking trails and abundant birdlife. The site was originally a blue metal quarry. Sue Quick, our president, personally invited our more senior members to join her on the Stonnington community bus. We were delighted to have much better weather than expected when we arrived at the park around 11am. For many of us it was a first time visit to Wilson Park. Previous visitors to the park were amazed at the development of this former quarry made up of a large section donated by the Wilson family in 1973, and a larger section acquired by the Casey City Council in 1992, all changed into a thoughtfully landscaped botanical garden. There was a quick walk to the kiosk for hot drinks, enjoyed with an assortment of cakes brought by committee members. We had an hour to wander around the winding pathways, skirting two lakes, checking out the plentiful waterbirds. The sun was shining well by this time, there were interesting cloud formations, and the cameras were busy!

East Malvern Combined Probus Club enjoyed a visit to the Wilson Botanic Gardens, Berwick. Members were also interested in the quarry’s fossil history interpreted in the small display very rare and unusual specimens at the Visitor Centre. We later returned to our bus and went to a local hotel for lunch, joined by other members who drove there independently. We returned via a different route through Berwick’s gentle hills to see lovely homes and gardens. East Malvern Combined Probus Club meets at Uniting Church Serrell St, East Malvern on the first Wednesday of the month. For further information, call 0488 419 314.

Learning about greyhounds ON Thursday 21st April, 26 members and partners visited the Sale Greyhound Club. The day began with a very informative talk about the greyhound industry by Dawn, a club committee member and a local greyhound trainer. Dawn’s knowledge of the Sale Greyhound Club and the life of a greyhound was excellent. The Sale Greyhound Club is one of 13 in Victoria and Sale is well respected among the greyhound fraternity. The greyhound industry is very strictly policed in regard to the welfare of the dog. Dogs have to be at the track and in the kennels 30 minutes before the start of the race meeting. Before entering the kennels dogs have to be weighed and drug tested. A dog cannot race if they are a fraction too much heavier or lighter than the last time they raced. (That started our members thinking that they would not be very good at qualifying for a race!) Greyhounds are fed dry food in the morning which contains all the necessary vitamins etc, and then again at night with 500 grams of meat. Dogs are generally trained to begin racing at 18 months to 2 years and their racing lifetime is usually about 5 years, so not a long racing time frame. A racing greyhound would weigh up to 36 kilograms. Both male and female dogs make good racing dogs. They have a natural instinct to run and chase but tire very quickly. Races can vary in length and you generally enter your dog in a race where he can maximise his strength. Some are short distance runners, other are more of a stayer and therefore run the longer races. After a race dogs have to stay on course for at least an half hour to ensure they are in good health, but particularly they can not leave the track until cleared by the stewards. Dawn also explained the Greyhound Adoption Program which rehomes retired racing greyhounds. Most of these dogs are between 2-4 years old and they live for up to 14 years. Greyhounds make great pets, they do not need much exercise (about 15-20 minutes day), they are happy to lie around the house most of the day and they are usually very good with children. After the informative talk on the greyhound industry, we then walked across to the kennels to see where it all happens before and after a race. There was a special table for the vet to examine each dog on entering, then scales

greyhound industry before we visited, those doubts were removed after our visit. After the visit to the kennels we entered the Graze Bistro at the Club for lunch. What a treat we had on entering, each seat had a show bag of greyhound literature and paraphernalia, and the menu and service at the Club was first class.

Many thanks to Michelle at the Greyhound Club for welcoming us to hear about their industry. The day was enjoyed by all those who attended. It was the first opportunity we have had in the last two years to be able to visit a business for our V & E outing. Hopefully this will be the start of many more visits to come.

Murals, art and friendship A GROUP of very excited people from The Combined Probus Club of Wheelers Hill set off to journey through Victoria’s amazing Wimmera Mallee Silo Art. Trail also witnessing the spectacular colours of the salt-pans at Lake Tyrell Sea Lake. A highlight of the trip was the amazing Stick Shed at Murtoa. The Nhill Aviation Museum Heritage Centre is not to be missed, many small towns welcomed us and the murals and street sculptures were so impressive. Our driver and tour director were very funny and this made the journey a great experience. Victoria now has 22 art silos and we visited 11 of them, so stay tuned. Last but not least the food was just wonderful. We had good country style cuisine and great wines to go with it, not to mention the many beautiful desserts each night. Caravan and camping group OUR Caravan and Camping group of 68 members travelled to Swan Hill for a week of friendship and joint activities. After settling in we gathered for happy hour with much chatter before receiving the itinerary for the week ahead. The following morning, we visited Lake Boga Boat Museum, which is run by the local Lions Club. On arrival we were greeted by our guide who gave a very informative talk about the Catalina Flying Boats as we stood under one admiring the amazing aircraft. We then saw a video which showed why Lake Boga was so important during WW11 from 1941 to 1947. We then ventured to the original secret communications bunker displaying many artefacts. Men and women worked proudly alongside each other repairing the damaged Flying Boats during this period in history. The afternoon was free to explore the area of Swanhill before returning for a barbecue dinner back at the Caravan Park followed by plenty of music and dancing. The next day was spent at the Pioneer Settlement Village where we looked at the history of The Murray Mallee Region. This was a step back in time as we viewed old style shops, a goal, post office, a working blacksmith, bank, school, saddlery and much more. Some members had a ride in a vintage 1920s car while others chose the slower pace riding in a horse and carriage. In the afternoon we cruised on the “Pyap“ then dinner at the Paragon Cafe before seeing ’The Heartbeat of the Murray’ - a spectacular laser light show that depicts the amazing story of the Murray from the prehistoric era to the present day, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The following day was free to explore further in the area, before the Club Hotel was invaded by many forms of wildlife of the Mallee creatures, all ready to have fun and party the night away. There were kangaroos, bees, butterflies, birds even a Mallee bull and many other characters far too many to mention.

We enjoyed a delicious meal listened to our entertaining poet who bought much laughter to the room. Friday morning was a pancake breakfast cooked by the wonderful caravan park owners. Yum! Mid-afternoon we gathered to show off our skills at mini golf to find a champion team - this was challenging to say the least. Saturday, we drove to The Spanner Sculpture Gardens, passing through Quambatook. On arrival we viewed an introductory video about the man who created the amazing Spanner Sculptures. After John contracted polio as a child, he was later restricted to a wheelchair. He found his passion for welding and creating such an array of life like sculptures all made from spanners of varying sizes. There was a shearer, a family of deer, a horse and dray and many others that we admired. Unfortunately, John has passed away but his amazing sculptures will still be enjoyed to those who visit the gardens. Sunday morning took us to the local farmer’s market at the Swan Hill botanic gardens. Once again, we tried our skills at team games with plenty of spectators thinking they could do better. The evening meal of pizza cooked in the hot fired pizza ovens while we waited by the beautiful warm campfire was very relaxing. The night was filled with laughter and fun as the Silly Awards were handed out to the culprits of the trip. We all thanked the organisers who put so much time into making this week possible and enjoyable for everyone. We learnt a lot about the history of the area, saw things that were interesting and of course we spent special time with our fellow club members sharing in fun and fellowship. The next day after packing up our gear some headed home, others continued to travel for a while. It was a great time and hopefully we will gather again at a different venue in the not-too-distant future.

Lakes Entrance trip ROCHESTER Probus Club, along with some members from Kerang, Echuca and Kyabram filled the bus heading to Lakes Entrance for six days. The scenery was a contrast to our flat country, enduring many hills, winding roads and twists and turns travelling on our first day through Omeo, Mt Hotham to Lakes Entrance. The group enjoyed staying at the one motel, and doing day trips. The second day after enjoying lunch at the Walhalla Lodge Hotel, we explored the old township, before having a train ride down the Walhalla Railway line. What a fantastic experience. Our third morning was visiting the fascinating Buchan Caves, discovering the honeycomb spectacular limestone formations carved by an underground river almost 400 million years ago, the largest cave system in Victoria. The afternoon was spent at Nyerimilang Heritage Park Homestead, set in 180 hectares. We were entertained with music, enjoyed scones, jam and cream for afternoon tea, then enjoyed some dancing, along with exploring the homestead and it’s surrounds.

Beautiful Lakes Entrance TWENTY-FIVE members of Watsonia Probus Club headed off to Lakes Entrance in beautiful East Gippsland, which served as their base for four nights. On the way they visited the historic town of Walhalla and the Latrobe Valley. Each day members toured the surrounding areas, which included trips to the Ninety Mile Beach, Paynesville, Orbost, and Marlo, where they saw the mouth of the Snowy River. One of the highlights was the relaxing cruise on the Gippsland Lakes, which included a delicious lunch at the Metung Hotel. A trip to Buchan Caves provided another enjoyable experience, particularly for the more adventurous souls in the group who managed to explore the caves.

Probus Club takes wings MANY of us have enjoyed the pleasure of flying as a means of transport to exotic destinations and to visit family and friends in this far-flung nation and world we live in. On 19 May members of Mitcham Nunawading Probus enjoyed a tour of Moorabbin Air Museum. This facility has a wonderful collection of aircraft from the early days of aviation, with a Gypsy Moth biplane with wooden wings covered in textile to a more recent early jet aircraft such as Canberra bomber, Mirage fighter and a Viscount commercial airliner. Our group was fortunate to have as a guide and commentator “Biggles”, otherwise known as Dennis Petersen, vice president of his Probus club. Dennis provided an interesting and deep knowledge of the origins and history of use of all of the museum aircraft exhibited. Fascinating to hear of so many aircraft designed and built in Australia which had a vital aircraft industry at Fisherman’s Bend in the 1930s and 1940s - aircraft such as the Gypsy Moth, Tiger Moth , Wirraway and Beaufighter. These latter were the back bone of Australia’s aircraft in the Second World War. There were some fascinating aircraft

Beaufighter aircraft used in the Pacific campaign.

A plan of museum exhibits. such as an autonomous drone designed and built in Australia in the recent past, and a helicopter used to rescue sailors in the 1998 storm that savaged the Sydney to Hobart fleet. This helicopter was the first on the scene and picked up sailors and then made it back to Bairnsdale with the engine stalling due to no fuel as they landed. A great day was finished of with an excellent lunch at the Fight Deck bar and Grill, a four star restaurant which lived up to its reputation of fine dining with a view of Moorabbin Airport, the second busiest airport in Australia.

Group members thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Birthday cake for 22 years THE Echuca Moama Twin Rivers Probus Club recently celebrated its 22nd year. Nancy Betts baked and decorated the birthday cake which was cut by Lew Whitehead and Ann Luke (pictured above). Several of the members reminisced on many of the fun activities enjoyed over previous years. Guest speaker Rosie Thomas OAM CEO Project Rockit.

New Era at Bentleigh East THE Probus Club of Bentleigh East started a new era in their history in May. For only the second time in their 22year history, the club moved its place of meeting. The Brighton Bowls Club provided an ideal venue with the pending closure of The Bentleigh Club. This significant change, following on from the problems the club faced during the pandemic, posed some unique

challenges for the committee. If the first meeting was any indication, the Club is in for a bright future in the months and years ahead. Nearly 80% of the members were in attendance at the May meeting and most of them stayed for lunch after the meeting. Despite being the first meeting in the new venue, everything went off without a hitch. There are two other Probus clubs

that meet at this venue and this has provided an opportunity for all three clubs to learn and grow not only in use of the facilities at The Brighton Bowls Club but also in areas such as recruitment of new members, speakers, trips, newsletter design and many others. There was a speaker from Project Rockit at the May meeting and she explained how her organisation was

fighting the battle against bullying both in the school environment and in the cyber area. Also, this organisation is involved in several world-wide social media platforms providing advice and guidance on bullying. Members of the Probus club provided positive feedback and interesting questions at the conclusion of her presentation. All up, a great introduction to this new era at the club.

Kittens, therapy dogs top the polls at Lort Smith SWARMED by four cheeky kittens and one scene-stealing therapy dog, Lort Smith CEO Jennifer Fleming and President Elect Dr Angus Henderson recently welcomed Minister Mary-Anne Thomas MP, Sheena Watt MP and Andy Meddick MP to Lort Smith’s North Melbourne Animal Hospital. The minister used the occasion to announce the Victorian Government’s response to their ground-breaking Taskforce Report for Rehoming Pets. The report recommends a number of strategies including the Pet Census and a Cat Management Plan. These will drive awareness for important animal issues such as microchipping, registration and responsible pet ownership. “What a delight it is to be here at Lort Smith” the Minister said. “We’re very happy to partner and work with you and to see some of the great changes you’re making here. It’s a fabulous organisation run by so many great people.” The animals stole the show of course, the main stars being four adorable kittens brought to North Melbourne especially to meet the minister from Lort Smith’s state-of-the-art new Adoption Centre in Campbellfield. Maple, Nutmeg, Scarlett and Frankie loved the minister and MPs’ visit, as did one of Lort Smith’s pet therapy teams, Malcolm and the glorious Bella. Judging by the photo, it looks like the VIPs enjoyed the visit too! 28 The Victorian Probian Monday, 20 June, 2022

Wine tasting at the Purple Hen Winery.

Nobbies rock formation.

Golden Square Probus Club GETAWAY became a reality when 39 members from the Golden Square Probus Club left for Phillip Island in April. We were welcomed at the Anchor Belle Holiday Park in Cowes which was our accommodation for our seven night stay. The weather being in our favour for the week that lay ahead enabled us to explore all the attractions the Island has to offer. Our first morning saw us taking part in a guided tour of the National Vietnam Veterans Museum. The museum seeks to remember, interpret and understand the experience of the veterans of Australia’s longest war and the enduring impact of the war on society. As the day drew to a close we found ourselves in awe watching from viewing platforms as the Little Penguins appeared from the ocean and made their way across the sand to the safety of their burrows. Phillip Island is the largest Little Penguins colony in the world. A visit to the Purple Hen Winery was on our program where we tasted some local wines before spending time at the Koala Conservation Park. We wandered upon tree-top boardwalks and woodlands to watch koalas up close in their natural habitat. The day came to an end with dinner at the Cowes RSL. The Amazing World of Chocolate tested our taste buds with tasty treats. At Nobbies the cobblestone rocks that jut out of the water are attached to the Phillip Island coastline and has the largest colony of Fur Seals in Australia. We were also treated to an Antarctic Journey, a multimedia experience with interactive activities and displays. Our final day was spent with a tour of Churchill Island Heritage Farm exploring the historical grounds. Members joined together for our Farewell Dinner at the San Remo Hotel. Special thanks to Clive and Yvonne, Heather and Russ for organising this Getaway.

Wycheproof members on the boardwalk at Lake Tyrrell.

Wycheproof hits the trail COVID created chaos; no doubt for everyone who’s pre-arranged plans were disrupted. This was also the case with the members from Wycheproof Probus. Our Probus group had decided to travel within the Buloke Shire to economically assist and support the region. The trip was to travel to Sea Lake. It was initially scheduled to travel in August of 2021, due to restrictions this date had to be cancelled, and then deferred to November 2021. Although Covid continues, travel restrictions have been lifted allowing the

group to eventually fulfil our aspiration to travel to Sea Lake. In March 2022 it was finally realised. Leaving Wycheproof early in the morning we set of for Nullawil, here we made a short stop to view Nullawil’s silo art. While there, we made our way to Trickbots - a local metal artist who has created a wide array of objects constructed from odd pieces of scrap metal - well worth a visit. From Nullawil we journeyed along the Calder Highway towards Sea Lake, on arrival we stopped by and visited the magnificent silo art there.

From the silo art we travelled into the centre of town and had a wonderful two course country style meal at the Sea Lake RSL. After consuming our meal we walked to the nearby Information Centre where a magnificent display of Aboriginal Art and sculpture was viewed. Having burnt off a few calories with that short walk, we drove another seven kilometres along the Calder once again and arrived at Lake Tyrrell. Lake Tyrrell has recently undergone the construction of a viewing platform, shelter area, car parking, a magnificent boardwalk and all access amenities.

Book by 30/6/22 and receive a $205 discount!

Having walked the boardwalk and taken in the stunning scenery, photos were taken a decision was then made to head back to Wycheproof. However, on the return trip we chose to stop off at Green Lake which offers camping, water skiing, sailing and other leisure activities. A spot of fishing wouldn’t go astray as well. Arriving back to Wycheproof all members were delighted with the day trip and that on our third attempt we had fulfilled our initial objective.

VicJam volunteers HELEN Finlay and Paul Baulch from Regis Head Office dedicated their time during their break volunteering at the Victorian Jamboree. VicJam is a fantastic opportunity for Scout kids across Victoria to come together for an array scouting activities. It’s a chance for young members of the community to try new things, take part in activities that they would never have been able to do before and meet people from all parts of society that become their friends for life. This VicJam was particularly special after many social events throughout the year were cancelled due to lockdowns throughout the state. A paddock in Elmore was transformed into a tent city that housed over 4500 people for 10 days. During that time, the Scouts got to take part in many activities at the Elmore base, including zip lining, rock climbing, laser tag and splat ball. There was also canoeing down the Murray River, water skiing at Lake Nagambie, caving, gold mining in Bendigo and other outings. Paul was involved with running activities for CubJam, which was a new initiative for eight-11 year olds.

There ended up being 1900 cubs visit across his five days of volunteering. During those days, Paul was running woggle making, but also spent numerous hours in planning and preparation before the event. Helen volunteered seven days as part of the onsite medical team working as a nurse. She and the team provided medical care to make sure everyone was healthy before getting back to the fun. Helen loved the change from her current role in infection control and going back to nursing for those few days. Every evening was jam-packed at the site, with live entertainment featured on the main stage as well as a cinema with free popcorn. A highlight for Helen was visiting the Scout units from across the state, and meeting people from all parts of Victoria. Paul loved engaging with the Cubs and helping them to achieve outcomes they thought they couldn’t. When asked about their favourite part of their time volunteering, Paul loved “seeing the smiles”, and Helen enjoyed “spending time with the young members and watching them grow into competent leaders of tomorrow”. 12551936-HC25-22

TEMPLESTOWE Central Probus members enjoyed an in depth exploration of the Goulburn Valley region, first planned some considerable time ago when we were not quite ready to venture to far flung places. Most of us had travelled independently through the region previously but we were delighted to experience the area’s attractions greatly enhanced by talks and guided tours led by passionate locals and our well informed tour leader. An added bonus was the fact that our driver was a local and he shared many little known facts and historical details of the areas we travelled through. As we set off on a showery morning we were sceptical when our leader, Belinda from GroupLink tours, claimed that good weather followed her, but to our surprise it proved to be the case. Crisp mornings were followed by glorious sunny days as we travelled around. We visited a pristine wetland in Yea and an old hotel, now museum, in Euroa. Of course no visit to the area would be complete without visiting the now famous silos. We stopped first at the original painted silo in Tungamah and were interested to note the progression of styles, techniques and local memorial themes as we travelled through St James, Devenish and Goorambat. The quirky hotel at St James featured walls decorated with US number plates and Mexican sombreros (amongst other unusual items) nailed to the ceiling. G J Coles original store building is still in this small town. While we were looking at the Weary Dunlop Memorial in Benalla a table bearing flutes of champagne ‘appeared’ in the park near the famed Benalla rose garden - of course it would have been bad form to refuse to partake - besides, it’s too hard to get the bubbles back in the bottle! We had a most enlightening guided tour of the Port of Echuca which revealed alarmingly high flood markers before we enjoyed a luscious Devonshire tea on board the paddle steamer ‘Canberra’ as we cruised on the Murray. We were intrigued by a veritable forest of cacti and succulents at Cactus World The Aussie Heritage Museum featured an eye watering collection of steins and beer cans and Australiana including lovingly restored horse drawn carriages. At the Big Strawberry we were warned to be aware that strawberries will be in short supply for quite a while as the local season has finished and floods up north have decimated crops there. Fortunately supplies were adequate to provide a

Hillyhoppers of White Hil THE past few weeks have been exceptionally busy for the Probus Club of White Hills commencing with the ‘Hillyhoppers’ caravan and cabin trip to Barham. Nineteen members and two guests enjoyed three days on the banks of the mighty Murray River, relaxing and unwinding in the peace and quiet of the Barham Holiday Park. Excursions to Arbuthnot Sawmill and Koondrook Men’s Shed, as well as the Border Flywheelers Museum were interesting and informative; in particular the museum, as so many the items on display brought back memories of our youth. Self catered breakfast, dinner and supper were on the menu as well as a night out at Club Barham. At the regular April Meeting, President Glenys Billings made a presentation to Marilyn Bayliss acknowledging her 15 year membership and service to White Hills Probus Club which has included assistance with ‘Coffee, Cake & Chatter’ and the sending of cards to members who are unwell. Joy Roy was presented with a certificate for 10 years service, several of which, were as editor of the ‘Hills Happenings’ monthly bulletin, club typist, committee member and several other important roles. As the April meeting was very close to Anzac Day, the guest speaker, Mrs Kellie Dadds, (who was a former Army Major) was chosen to describe her experience in the Australian Defence Forces and give some insight into her service in Afghanistan, Iraq, Solomon Islands and Syria. Now retired, with a young family, Kellie has become very interested in the ‘Brothers In Arms’ Project whose focus is to build a memorial in Belgium to commemorate the many brothers who

Glenys Billings making a presentation to Joy Roy acknowledging her 10 year milestone.

On 1 May over 140 members and guests were entertained by the ever popular Maryborough Jazz Band on a Sunday afternoon at the Huntly Memorial Hall. This magical afternoon of jazz was enjoyed by members and visitors from as

far away as Charlton, Kyneton, Werribee, Maryborough, Elmore, Echuca and beyond. The afternoon tea was also a hit with everyone. Another Sunday afternoon of jazz is planned for September featuring the ‘Hot B’ Hines.

We’re in good company THE winter chill plus the prevalence of colds, flu and Covid made for a smaller gathering at the May meeting of the Probus Club of White Hills but the ‘show must go on’ and members were keen for business as usual. Terry Iles was congratulated on her 15 years of membership and was presented with a memento of the occasion. Terry said she always enjoyed the company of the other members, the variety of speakers and activities, trips and outings; and has always highly recommended the club to her friends. The induction of a new member is always a special occasion and the latest

inductee to the Probus Club of White Hills is Trish McLernon, who was warmly welcomed by members. Guest speaker for May was Trevor Strauch from the Huntly Fire Brigade who took members on a journey through the various activities of the volunteer fire brigade and shared some of his experiences during times of bushfires throughout Victoria and beyond. He also explained about the big ‘divide’ which now exists between ‘career’ firemen and local volunteers; and how the fire brigade is now a ‘first responder’ to not only fires, but road accidents and medical emergencies. President Glenys Billings makes a presentation to Terry Iles, acknowledging her 15-year membership milestone.

The best of both worlds THE Committee of the Ringwood Clock Tower Probus Club decided to hold a hybrid general meeting - face to face and Zoom- to cater for those members who were still concerned about the effects of Omicron. This involved a series of interconnected laptop computers and an overhead projector thus enabling those on Zoom to see those at the meeting and vice versa.

Both groups were also able to hear and see the guest speaker who told us about the history of Fairyland in Kew. In all there were 100 members present with 60 at the meeting and 40 on Zoom. The meeting was very successful and our thanks were passed onto secretary, Col Pask, who spent many hours working out and implementing the technicalities in bringing both groups together.

Essendon celebrates A LUNCHEON was held on 12 April to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Essendon Probus Club (oldest continuing Probus Club in Victoria). The event was held at the Northern Golf Club, Glenroy. Two guest speakers were invited to the function, Public Transport, Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll and Paul

Burdett, president of Essendon North Rotary Club, the sponsoring club in 1982. Mr Burdett who presented Probus Club president Ray Saunders with a PSPL 40 year celebration certificate to mark the event. A great time was had by the 60 members and friends in attendance.

Resevoir in Tungamuh RESERVOIR Probus Club enjoyed a day trip on Friday 22 April visiting the Tungamuh Silo Art. They were blessed with perfect weather, great company, and a closeup and personal awe-inspiring experience. To quote one of our guests: “Australia’s history depicted on the largest of canvases.’ The breathtaking silo artworks are located in the tiny communities of Goorambat, St James, Devenish and Tungamuh, Victoria. This particular silo art left us all very moved.

Reservoir Probus Club members were moved by this silo art. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. Lest we forget.

Congratulations on 40 years of the Essendon Probus Club.

Birthday cake marks 30 years at Resevoir and other special occasions from 1992 to 2022 was appreciated by members. Many were pleased that those who are no longer with us were able to be remembered in these fond memories, shared on such a special day for the club.

THE ladies of ‘Ocean Grove on Barwon’ Probus Club recently enjoyed a visit to ‘Cottage by the Sea’ at Queenscliff. This centre has long been providing sea-side holidays for underprivileged Victorian children. Members were able to see the extensive renovations to the original old building, which have recently been completed. On arrival, Club members were shown

the extension and all the new facilities. Volunteers then served a delicious morning-tea, during which the Manager, Bill Kerr, gave an informative talk about the history of the Cottage, as well as its current programs. Bill, an ex-teacher, who has been at the Cottage for fifteen years is extremely enthusiastic about his role in providing memorable experiences for lessfortunate youngsters from all over the State.
