St Monica’s College, Epping ST Monica’s College, Epping is a Catholic coeducational College based in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The College was established in 1964 and has two campuses in Epping for students in years 7 to 12. We also have our country campus Ostia at Strath Creek. Our facilities are first class and we continue to upgrade our buildings as demonstrated by the three building programs undertaken during the COVID 19 challenges. This includes a new Science and Technology building to better serve our STEM students, the Cooinda Building which will provide modern teaching and learning areas for students, as well as a complete rebuild of the Beehive, our technology centre based on Davisson Street campus. Our College strongly endorses co-education. Choosing co-education for your child is the right choice. Co-education reflects the real-life realities your child will face. Co-education assists significantly in breaking down sexist attitudes in both genders. Boys and girls learn in a natural classroom environment, not sheltered away from each other and in this normal way appropriate respect ought to develop between the genders. In the coeducational classroom, both female and male perspectives are explored, thus greater understanding between the sexes, more consideration of points of view, and increased development of individuals both intellectually and socially. Truly, co-education reflects the diversity of society. Co-education, in other words, is the real world. Accordingly, students are better prepared to enter the workforce, more capable of coping in post-secondary educational institutions, and more confident to involve themselves in discussions and activities with the opposite sex. Of course they are because they have mixed and grown up with the opposite sex from kindergarten years. Our College offers one of the broadest curriculum choices of any school. Our subject choices will meet the needs of almost any student. We embrace modern teaching methods and ensure that we are always looking at ways to improve what we do. Students at St Monica’s College, Epping can be assured that they will have every opportunity and all the support they need to reach their highest standards, supported by a teaching staff committed to their success.

The College is also renowned for an excellent sporting program. Our choice of sports is extensive and our coaching utilises experts in their sports. Our Sporting Academies ensure our athletes have whatever they need to excel in their chosen sport with gymnasiums on campus as well as a high-performance centre for advanced training. We make sure that whilst students have the opportunity to develop their sporting excellence that they do not do so at the cost of their education. Our College also offers an accelerated learning program for students. HORIZONS caters for highly able students through a program that meets their advanced educational needs. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder are well supported by our Arrunga Inclusion Program. This program focuses on the achievement of positive academic, social and emotional outcomes for each student to maximise their education and future employment opportunities. Our Performing Arts Faculty is also well regarded. Whether it be dance, drama or music, students have the opportunity to develop and showcase their talents. The College regularly has performances and showcases for our performing arts students. Our Visual Arts Faculty includes design, photography, media and art and students have the opportunity to explore and develop their talent in these areas. St Monica’s College, Epping welcomes a diverse cohort of students with the assurance that we will ensure that each and every one has the best opportunity to be their best. Looking Forward WITH this edition focusing on enrolments for 2023 it is a time to very much look forward. To some extent that will involve some crystal ball gazing. Now in our third year of this sapping pandemic, much has changed, whilst some has not. Most heartening of all, the children are back at school. Parents can again join with us on our school premises, and that’s a joy too. I must say, I am thrilled to be able to provide prospective parents with personal tours of our school, of which we are all very proud. I’ve missed that very much in the recent past. Schools are hollow places without children in them, as we experienced during the dark weeks of lockdowns, and there were many, in 2020-21. So, what should parents be looking for in choosing a school for their children in 2023, now that they can once again visit schools much more freely? Onsite visits give parents the opportunity to test that of which they know about a school from the school’s website, word of mouth and the school’s external reputation. Schools conduct a variety of onsite visits during this part of the year and right up to the end of the school year. They all differ in some way or another and it’s the differences that may sway your mind. Some schools offer group tours, others, such as ours offer individual tours. Some are conducted by principal class staff, some by other

staff. Importantly, tours provide parents with the chance to ask off-the-cuff questions and experience the culture and ‘feel of the school’. That’s all very important. Beyond tours what engagement do schools offer to prospective families? There’s Education Week activities for an overview. For future Prep students there’s a variety of activities, culminating in some form or other of orientation program. They’re all important and will give you clues on what matters most to you. I’ve found that most parents want a safe, caring and inviting school environment, one which provides a host of stimulating educational experiences. Why not check us out? Catholic Regional College St Albans CHOOSING a school for your child is an exciting but challenging time, especially for families who are preparing their first child for secondary school. There are many options and it can be difficult to know where to begin. However, parents know their child, and the process of looking at different schools will help clarify which is the best fit for their child and family. Families often ask us what makes our school different. The first things that come to mind is that we are a strong faith community where learning, wellbeing and family all matter. We celebrate and embrace the rich cultural diversity of our local community and endeavour to live as a community without borders. We offer a broad learning program that engages both girls and boys and challenges them to be the best that they can be. Our students are encouraged to explore their faith, to care for others, to become active global citizens and to do their personal best in all things. Secondly, I think that our school is just the right size for young people as they navigate adolescence to become young adults. With 125 students at each year level, we are small enough to ensure that students are known, have a strong sense of belonging and feel safe. At the same time, we are big enough to offer a broad and engaging learning program. I would describe the College as a small school with big opportunities. Lastly, our dedicated staff, strong relationships

Co-curricular activities are an important part of the secondary education experience and prospective students and their families are often keen to know more about these. Activities range from the community garden, various clubs and sporting activities, to the school production, choir, homework club and cultural nights. The co-curricular program changes over time, depending on the interests of students and staff. Further details and a virtual tour are on the College website. I hope this brief insight into our school will help you in making a decision about secondary education and I welcome your interest in the College. Haileybury Early Learning Centre Giving your child the best start A GREAT Early Learning Centre can be the first step toward a rewarding educational experience and a key element of a good ELC is a diverse and comprehensive program that covers all aspects of child development. Haileybury’s ELC program enables children to have fun, develop social skills and learn educational concepts that help them to understand the world around them. All of Haileybury’s four ELCs exceed National Quality Standards, as set by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority and each ELC has a thoughtful, evidence-based learning program. Subjects that are part of the curriculum include Language and Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Social Thinking, Inclusion and Diversity, Child Safety and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultural perspectives. Based on these themes, children build their social and academic skills through activities that ignite their curiosity and individual interests. “Our program is based on the child’s interests and it supports children’s learning through selfdetermination,” says Director of ELC, Dr Rachel Pollitt. “Children follow their interests and our skilled early childhood educators harness each child’s curiosity and link this to an aspect of our program that responds to each child’s learning needs.”

For example, at the ELC in Keysborough, children do science experiments and have learned to make ‘bush tucker’. At the ELC in Brighton, children and parents have built a fire pit that is a favourite gathering place. City campus students enjoyed watching live footage of a falcon nesting in a building close by that prompted learning about birds and how the school’s rooftop garden could be expanded to attract wildlife. The focus on nurturing curiosity and academic and social understanding continues in Junior School with Haileybury’s Explicit Teaching Model used to inspire classroom learning and help students master core literacy and numeracy skills. Explicit Teaching is based on The Warm Up and ‘I Do, We Do and You Do’, with The Warm Up being a 10 to 15-minute overview that explains what children are about to learn and the aims of the lesson. “Then the teacher sets the example by doing the ‘I Do’,” says Anna Sever, Deputy Principal (Teaching and Learning). “In the We Do phase, students and teachers work through the activity together and then students do it themselves in the ‘You Do’ phase. This helps students master core skills and move learning from their short to long-term memory.” The Junior School timetable at Haileybury is also designed to work with young brains, so Numeracy and Literacy classes are scheduled in the morning when attention levels are at their best.

Our students are fostered to be the best versions of themselves. Like Ruby, who exemplifies the ‘quiet achiever’. Celebrating 40 Years of God’s Story 12546396-HC28-22
If you stood back to survey Heathdale Christian College 40 years ago, you wouldn’t have had to step back very far to take in the four staff members, 37 students and handful of portable buildings that made up the fledgling school. It was the early ’80s, and Heathdale’s founding visionary, Reverend Joe Westlake, had put a call out in the local paper to interested families who had a desire to start a Christian school to serve the West of Melbourne. Around 30 families turned up to the meeting, caught onto the vision and began to prepare in earnest. It meant a whole lot of prayer, faith, and sweat as those early families and friends donned overalls, dug trenches and repainted second-hand furniture to turn the lot donated by the Werribee Baptist Church into a school. By 1982, Heathdale Christian College officially opened and the first students set foot on campus. Flash forward and Heathdale Christian College is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2022. Over those years, the College has grown to over 2100 students across two campuses in Melton and Werribee; the number of staff serving those families numbers over 300; and both campuses are in the early stages of masterplans that will see each campus redeveloped to cater for the growing number and interests of students and families joining the College. With the busy-ness of two campuses situated in fast-growing areas of Melbourne’s West, it could be easy to forget about Heathdale’s humble beginnings and the desire of those founding families to follow God’s vision for a school that would honour God through strong Biblical foundations; partner with families of the West in bringing up their children; and have a deep desire to help each student develop their unique God-given potential. Lyn Moffett, a past Principal of Primary at Heathdale Christian College, touched on the need to continue this legacy when she said, “there will be new ideas, new buildings and community members. We will employ

Rev Joe Westlake and students during the early days of Heathdale Christian College new staff and develop new curriculum and programs. Through all of this, my greatest hope is that we continue to build on our strong biblical worldview foundations, and I hope our experiences in being here will bring hope and strength to anyone who ever hears the Heathdale story.” God’s story will continue to unfold at Heathdale Christian College well past the 40year mark as the staff and community continue to honour that original vision into the future. As Executive Principal, Ross Grace, declared at the school’s recent 40th Anniversary commemoration assembly, “Upholding the original vision, we will aim to continue to serve the families of the West as faithfully and honourably as those who went before us.” As families continue to join the College into 2023 and beyond, there is great anticipation for how they will be written into God’s story as Heathdale continues to grow. New Vision Redefines Learning A NEW vision for Learning and Teaching at John Paul College will see the school’s focus extend beyond academia to incorporate life skills and personal wellbeing, better preparing students for life after school. Kara Baxter, Deputy Principal - Learning and Teaching, said the vision was developed to provide a more holistic framework for learning. “One of the key ideas behind our new vision is that learning is not just about knowledge and content, but growth, including emotional and intellectual growth. Staff, students and parents all contributed to the development of this forwardthinking vision throughout 2021.” “Our vision includes three elements: ‘Knowledge’, including helping students develop a curiosity and passion for learning; ‘Capabilities’, or the ability to apply knowledge to real life situations and adapt to change; and ‘Self’, which includes developing emotional wellbeing, resilience, leadership, social awareness and independence.” To coincide with this, a new innovative Professional Learning Model has also been launched to support the implementation of the vision and to ensure our teachers are working to continuously improve their practice. The model encompasses a multitude of different elements and strategies, seeing to strengthen teachers capacity to effectively identify and address their students’ learning needs. The model also allows
our staff to develop through focusing on Collaboration, Feedback, Research and Individual Growth. In addition to the vision, the College recently introduced a new elective, ‘STEAM’, available at Year 9. The subject, which integrates Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics, was developed to provide students with foundational skills for future careers in a rapidly evolving world. This year’s STEAM students are working on projects including solar panelled boats, propelled cars and robotics tasks. Year 7 & 8 students also have a dedicated ‘STEAM Week’ coming up in late June where they will participate in hands-on projects that demonstrate how STEAM can make a difference in their homes and community. “New jobs are emerging every day because of technological advances,” Principal, John Visentin said. “Skills developed by students through STEAM provide students with the foundation to succeed at school and beyond.” The College is continually expanding, with a new double storey Learning Building, due for completion this year. The building will include; 11 classrooms, independent study nooks, multiple outdoor learning spaces and student breakout areas. With so many opportunities on offer, apply now for Year 7, 2024 at jpc.vic.edu.au. Applications are due by Friday 19th August, 2022.

Being strong believers that learning should not be limited to the classroom, students also have access to a variety of extracurricular opportunities, including sports, eSports, Outdoor Education, ZooCrew (animal husbandry), HarMacK (social justice), coding, debating etc. For our Year 9 students, a secondary campus has been specifically designed to support students as they learn to connect with their peers, significant others, the community, the environment and themselves. All our students also have equal opportunity to participate in camps and excursions at intra- and interstate levels, as well as expanding

their cultural boundaries and understanding within our International Program. We approach all learning through the lens of inclusivity and offer career and personal guidance for those who require support in their journey; thereby striving to provide students with a robust support system for social-emotional learning to ensure the prioritisation of their wellbeing. The College vision statement is Celebrating all life, Challenging all people, Dreaming the new day and MacKillop College holds firm to the notion that, to support the self is to support the whole. For over fifty years, we have strived to live up to what our namesake St Mary MacKillop envisioned, by giving our students that which they need to grow. We have an ethos of inclusivity, acceptance and, ever, a need to protect the dignity of the human person. Marian College MARIAN College is a Kildare Education Ministries school for girls in the Brigidine Tradition. Our College seeks to provide young women with the opportunity to be educated in an environment that permits and supports each person to grow completely as an individual and as a member of the community. We teach 850 girls in a safe and secure atmosphere, with each girl knowing that she will be cared for and supported by our strong pastoral care and wellbeing structures. Learning and growth, we believe, should take place within a framework that values and promotes inclusiveness, justice, love and forgiveness. We provide relevant, innovative and challenging educational programs. The curriculum is updated on a regular basis to ensure that courses of study meet the needs of our students. Students in their senior years are offered a variety of possible pathways and programs. The College’s high expectations for students and their learning are reflected in their academic achievements. Our extensive co-curricular program is designed to provide opportunities for students in academic, sporting, cultural and spiritual areas. Many exciting and wonderful experiences are offered through our Book Club, Science Club, Bike Club, Educating for Justice Team, the Marian
Leos and the St. Vincent de Paul Group. We value, encourage and recognise the diversity of many cultures and religions within the school, as both a reflection of the wider community and as a means of understanding the broader world. Entering secondary school is an exciting stage of life and this transition is a period of adjustment for the individual student and their family. At Marian, we have a team of teachers who work to ensure each family feels a deep sense of belonging. This year, the College is placing special emphasis on ‘Compassion – Walking with and having empathy for all,’ one the Kildare Ministries core values. We will also reaffirm our moral obligation to respect the gift of Earth and all life on it, as part of God’s creation. Our changing environment makes us pause to consider how we live on this planet, and as highlighted by Pope Francis, how we Care for our Common Home. We welcome you to join us for a College Tour, lead by our students and members of the School Leadership Team. Our College Tours provides families with an excellent opportunity to obtain all the information necessary to make an informed decision regarding your daughter’s education. Minaret College: Celebrating 30 years THIS year marks the 30 year anniversary of Minaret College serving the needs of the Australian Muslim community in South East Melbourne. Founded in 1992, the College is now the school of choice for over 2500 students across three campuses – Springvale, Officer and Doveton. Both Springvale and Officer Campus include an Early Learning Centre as well as Foundation to Year 12. The newest campus in Doveton is dedicated to Primary years. The vision of Minaret College is to provide an environment where young Muslim students flourish. It is an environment which nurtures students’ identity as Muslims and develops confident, capable young people who are ready to contribute to the broader community. Alongside the Victorian curriculum, students study Quran, Arabic and Islamic studies. The College also offers a daily Hifz program where selected students start the day a little earlier and are supported to memorise the Holy Quran. Daily prayers are offered at school and the College celebrates significant religious occasions such as Eid and Ramadan together. Working in partnership with families, the College identifies the strengths and interests of each student. The 2021 College Dux, Mobeen Mougadam achieved an outstanding ATAR of 98.5. Minaret College graduates pursue a diverse range of careers after their VCE. Ninety-nine percent of graduates from last year were offered a place in a tertiary course of their choice. Courses include medicine, science, engineering, psychology, business, and teaching. The College Community are proud of the results of their graduates however students are also reminded of the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (saws) that the best among them are those with the best character. Many Minaret College graduates have attended the College for their 13 years of schooling and establish a lifelong bond with their fellow students. The learning journey starts in Junior Primary School when a student enters Foundation. Play-based learning activities facilitate learning and social development. With strong emphasis on numeracy and literacy skills, students are encouraged to be curious learners, thereby setting themselves up for success in future years. St Columba’s College THIS year marks 125 years of St Columba’s College. Founded by the Sisters of Charity in 1897, the College remains on its original site in Essendon and boasts the mansion that was once the school house and lodgings for the Sisters. The Sisters had an innovative and courageous approach to their work, testing the boundaries of what was expected of religious women. Their firm values of generosity, creative problem solving and ‘breaking the mould’, are evident today in both the culture and community at St Columba’s College. Like our founders, we are a forward-facing community – we understand that we educate for futures that are unknown and this is reflected in the development of innovative programs that allow girls to connect with the world that will be on offer to them once they complete their secondary education. Our College motto ‘fidelis et fortis’, faith & strength, reminds us of our ongoing commitment to develop young women who are confident, just, resilient and compassionate, ready to take their place in the world. Our educational opportunities are supported by modern facilities which allow our students to embrace their learning in dynamic spaces. In 2022, St Columba’s College will break ground on a state-of-the-art STEAM building, which will be constructed on the corner of Buckley and Lorraine Streets. The new facility will incorporate contemporary classrooms with the seamless integration of technology, modern learning tools

and collaborative working spaces that promote the Sciences, Arts, and Food Technology. The College will also be adding to our already extensive sports facilities, with the upgrade of our outdoor multi-use sports court. These improvements will assist in the delivery and promotion of our co-curricular sports programs and continue to enhance student learning in physical education and health studies. We look forward to the expansion of facilities at St Columba’s College, and continuing the tradition of innovation and future thinking, that is the hallmark of our College. St Francis De Sales ST FRANCIS de Sales is a Catholic School that supports parents as partners, in a learning journey for their child that is enlightened by faith, animated by love and leading to hope from coming to know God’s love and care for all. Students are energised to seek deeper meaning and explore questions about the world around them. We desire the full flourishing of each child to embrace their giftedness and be the best they can be. As our patron saint St. Francis de Sales said, “Be who you are and be that perfectly well.” We support our students to grow and embrace a view of themselves and the world that leads to peace, justice and the wellbeing of the whole of creation. St Francis de Sales is a place of inclusivity, learning excellence and a community where relationships are valued and built upon. We strive to provide a happy, supportive and secure learning environment that encourages your child to be a confident and independent, excited about exploring their potential as learners. Our programs are personalised to meet each child’s learning needs and ability. The student’s age or Year level are not barriers for learning. The Victorian Curriculum is structured as a
continuum across levels of learning achievement not years of schooling. This enables the development of targeted learning programs for all students, where the curriculum is used to plan in relation to the actual learning level of each student rather than their assumed level of learning based on age. Each and every child at St. Francis de Sales is de Sales will progress developmentally according to their readiness to learn, their interest in learning, ability to embrace the next challenge set and potential to learn. Teachers are skilled to assess each child’s learning development, target teaching and provide the encouragement, support and assistance to achieve learning goals and outcomes. High standards are maximised in all areas of the curriculum as we continually refine our strategies to empower students as life-long learners, critical, creative thinkers who will ultimately contribute to society as thoughtful and responsible citizens. St Francis Xavier Primary School ST Francis Xavier Primary School has been serving the Catholic parish communities in and around Box Hill since 1928. Our school is characterised by wonderful partnerships with our families, a team of dedicated and passionate educators and students who embrace everything school life has to offer. Our school is inspired by the model of St Francis Xavier, a man who served others and spent his time bringing the good news of Jesus to those he encountered. This is our mission too, to educate our young people to understand the values modelled by Jesus of trust, respect, forgiveness and care and live these out daily. Our staff work collaboratively to plan learning experiences that cater for the needs of every student in our care. We work in teams to analyse student data and bring this together with what we know and understand about our students to ensure that our teaching is targeted and purposeful, always aimed at supporting the student to grow and progress. This sits within our commitment to the wellbeing of each student, knowing that when students are happy, settled and secure at school, learning flows naturally. We offer a broad specialist program that includes Mandarin, Art, Music, Physical Education, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and a weekly session in our Discovery Centre. Xavier College XAVIER College has recently restructured its Early and Middle years experiences in a comprehensive realignment and recrafting of its overall College program. Extending upon its co-educational Kindergarten for 3- and 4-year-olds, Xavier is moving to a 2-year staged model of educational delivery from Prep to Year 12. This will coincide with a comprehensive building program to enhance every aspect of each campus. Our Junior School (P-6) program will be set at the magnificent Burke Hall Campus. It will operate from 2024, maintaining an aligned and progressive curriculum journey for Prep to Year 2 (Stage 1 housed in its contemporary St Louis Building), through Years 3 and 4 (Stage 2) and into Years 5-6 (Stage 3) that also acts as a significant point of entry for many students and families. Our other key entry point of Year 7 will be accommodated in an exceptional, new state-ofthe-art Year 7-8 learning precinct on the Senior Campus, opening for the start of 2024. As a school that enrols boys, Xavier is committed from the commencement of a boy’s education to developing respectful and aspirant learners. Our distinctive Jesuit character underscores these learning and life values, whereby our future graduates are formed with an intentional mindset to be authentic, spiritual, positive, inspiring, resilient and empathetic. These ASPIRE qualities are infused through each age and stage, where our educators deliver a holistic curriculum designed to encourage students to be curious, ask questions, make discoveries, collaborate, reflect and think independently. Head of Early Years at Xavier College, Ms Elena Serraglio strongly believes “that a child who is fully engaged in learning, more commonly demonstrates positive behaviours. We strive to provide a learning environment in which students feel happy, productive, and secure. The partnership between staff, parents, and the child encourages each individual to grow intellectually, spiritually, morally, socially, emotionally, physically and creatively” There is a strong emphasis on action and preparing our students for a life of service, instilling in them a genuine commitment to serve others.

We aim to develop students who will become men of conscience, competence, and compassion, able to bring about a more peaceful and just society by example and deeds. Opportunities are not limited to the traditional classroom setting. Primary students are engaged with our Expeditions program from an early stage, teaching them to engage the head, heart, and hands in meaningful ways and to transport classroom learning to the real world. Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 will enjoy daily experiences outside the classroom in purpose built outdoor play and learning spaces. Year 3 & 4 students will take part in weekly experiences in the Yarra Bend National Park. Year 5 and 6 students move beyond the campus to experience life in regional Victoria where they deepen their understandings from the classroom by connecting authentically to the natural world. At Xavier, we understand the crucial importance of a rich Primary education in laying the foundation for the future of your child. We strive to ensure the Early Years experience is a joyous one for every child. From skills, passions and work ethic to self-image and finding their place in the community, the journey begins here.
