Walkers raise thousands for Kelly family A Pakenham man has walked for 24 hours straight to help raise money for a Beaconsfield mum’s cancer treatment. Michael Soutter, who was recovering from a recent bout of Covid-19, powered through the cold night on Saturday 16 July into Sunday morning for his friend Sarah Kelly, who is battling brain cancer. Thousands of dollars were raised by hundreds of people who came out to support the 24 Hours for the Kelly Gang fundraising event. STORY PAGES 8-9
Tributes flow for icon Doc Humour and humility have been hallmarks of Bill ‘Doc’ Doherty’s fortunate life, which sadly came to an end last week at the ripe old age of 99. In June last year, when the Queen’s people finally acknowledged the Nar Nar Goon icon with a Medal of the Order of Australia for his work in the community and football circles, the response was typical of Doc. “I’ve told them they have to salute me here (at Bunyip’s Hillview hostel) now,” Doc said with a smile. Easy $7.5 million By Shelby Brooks Three local projects are one step closer to being completed after Cardinia Shire councillors decided to seek millions in funding from the State Government. The council is seeking $7.5m from the
Growing Suburbs Fund 2022-2023 for the IYU Recreation Reserve Regional Athletics facility pavilion in Pakenham, the Upper Beaconsfield community, sport and scout facility, and PB Ronald Reserve public toilet redevelopment in Pakenham.
Councillor Brett Owen said there was a need for “very vital upgrades” to the three facilities - each long-standing and worthy projects for the community. The State Government committed $50m to the Growing Suburbs Fund, open to Mel-
bourne’s ten interface and six peri-urban councils, including Cardinia Shire Council. Cardinia Shire Council is eligible to receive up to $7.5m which is 15 per cent of the total $50m funding pool. STORY PAGE 7
