“However, this major transition cannot happen overnight, and gas has an important role to play as a backstop for the power system. The Victorian government’s Gas Substitution Roadmap states there will be a role for gas until at least 2040.”

We remembered the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War. We honoured those veterans who lost their lives during battle, returned home wounded, ill or injured, lost their lives in the years since they returned and still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service. We also paused to reflect on the impact of service on veterans’ families. Ocean Grove’s Peter Foote served in the war, which was Australia’s longest military engagement of the 20th century.

“Viva Energy recognises the world is moving to a low-carbon future. We are committed to being a part of the energy transition.

By Matt Hewson Viva Energy’s announcement of commercial agreements for the construction of pier and berthing infrastructure for its proposed gas terminal in the Port of Geelong has met with condemnation from numerous community groups.Oneof those groups, A Different Approach Community (ADAC), wants to help citizens who oppose the project make their voices heard.“We’re a fairly conservative group; we’re not marching up the streets, we don’t chain ourselves to machinery, we write letters,” said ADAC convenor Robert Patterson. “We’ve sent about 4085 letters to federal politicians over a two-year period, all asking, please, let’s do something about climate. “The United Nations tells us we should have no new fossil fuels, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is saying it’s now or never. So we see it as our responsibility to say something about the terminal. “We need to get politicians to take notice, and letters work. Updated designs for the South Geelong Station upgrade feature improvements to the car park, a second platform and a new accessible overpass. Major works are set to begin later this year, with the project to be completed in late 2024. The project will duplicate about eight kilometres of track from South Geelong Station to Breakwater Road, and between Marshalltown Road and Waurn Ponds Station.

“Removing the dangerous and congested level crossings at Fyans Street will boost traffic flow for the thousands of locals and visitors that travel through it every day.”

• An online webinar and Q&A will be held from 6.30pm to 8pm on Thursday, August 18 to address key feedback raised by the community.

Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Minister Catherine King said. “The upgrades will make it easier for people in these communities to access train services and move around the region.”

For many creatives, the pressure to produce works that provide some kind of financial return stifles opportunities to engage in purely explorative practice. So when Geelong-based actor, dancer and choreographer Stacey Carmichael found out she had been awarded one of Geelong Arts Centre’s Creative Engine grants she was thrilled to have the opportunity to do just that. “I was really stoked to be selected,” Ms Carmichael said. “I suppose, as creatives, we always feel ‘Is my work valid? Is my work interesting to anyone?’ So being given this kind of support gives it a sense of validation, which is enormous.” The grants provide some level of financial support – $1000 in Ms Carmichael’s case – but even more importantly a considerable amount of in-kind studio access at the Arts Centre. Ms Carmichael said the studio access would be a game-changer for her new work, Project Connect, which will explore group-devised physical theatre performance. “The 38 hours studio space is the key thing, having somewhere inspiring and professional to work in,” she said. “We get access to meeting spaces and PD, which is also really exciting.

The City of Greater Geelong has released new videos and an interactive online simulation of how the Pakington North Precinct might develop during the next 20Lastyears.year, council adopted a final Urban Design Framework (UDF) for the Geelong West end of Pakington Street and Gordon Avenue and committed to further engagement to help increase community understanding of the intent of building controls proposed for the Pakington North Precinct. Mayor Peter Murrihy said the latest round of consultation is focused on the northern end of Pakington Street from Church Street to Waratah Street and Wellington Street. “We want to help the community understand the proposed building controls and how they will be used to shape the renewal of the northern end of Pakington Street,” he said. “Community feedback is key to this process, and we want to consider the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors to the northern end of Pakington Street.” Details on the neighbourhood chats:

The level crossing on Fyans Street in South Geelong will be upgraded as part of the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication. The boom gates at the level crossing will be removed and the five-way roundabout at Fyans Street simplified according to recently released designs of the project. More than 14,000 vehicles use the road each day. The current intersection includes boom gates in the middle of the roundabout, making it one of South Geelong’s most notorious intersections.

Honouring achievement

By Cr Peter Murrihy Often when we hear the phrase ‘people with disability’ it is the last word – disability – that stands out. For me, the first word – people – is far more significant.Becausethat is first and foremost how people with disability should be defined. They are no different to anybody else in that they have dreams and aspirations, it is just that like most of us, some people with disability have different needs. The list of construction business project groups vying to deliver the $294 million Geelong Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCEC) has been narrowed down to three. The project will aim to transform the Geelong waterfront and drive significant economic, social and cultural growth for the city and broader Geelong region.

The three shortlisted builders are Kinetik – comprising Tetris Capital, Amber Australia, Kane Constructions, ISS Facility Services, CostaFox Developments, Warren & Mahoney and Six Degrees; Geelong Live – comprising Capella Capital, Aware Super, Lendlease Building, Honeywell, MAB Corporation, Populous, Hassell, Freadman White and Oculus; and Plenary Conventions – comprising Plenary Group, Built, BGIS, Woods Bagot, WSP and 4D Workshop. Once complete, the state-of-the-art precinct will be run by the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust and will feature a 1000-seat event venue, 3700 square metres of multi-purpose space, and a 200-room upscale hotel and commercial spaces.Following a comprehensive tender process, involving extensive community and stakeholder consultations, the successful bidder is expected to be announced in mid-2023, with construction to start in late 2023 and the first event to be hosted in 2026.Itis anticipated the project will support more than 600 jobs during the construction phase, and an additional 270 ongoing jobs created once the facility is up and running. “This announcement is the next step in a truly exciting project, one that will place Geelong as host to a world-class cultural facility – the Convention and Exhibition Centre – and showcase the city’s beautiful waterfront assets,” Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said. “Once complete, the GCEC will help revitalise the city and regional economy.” Victorian Regional Development Minister Harriet Shing said it was fantastic to see such a high calibre of consortia eager to be a part of creating the centre and precinct. “With a waterfront precinct that rivals any in the country, Geelong deserves a convention centre precinct that will enable even more people to come and explore all we have to offer,” she said.

Geelong early parenting boost

“This new centre will deliver flexible, targeted services to help parents in Geelong and the surrounding areas with sleep and settling issues, supporting hundreds of local families a year,” Mr Andrews said. The project’s architects, Brand Architects, consulted childcare experts, local community groups and traditional owners as part of the design process to ensure the design reflects the community it serves.

“The new centre will offer parents that expert support that many of us need.”

The final designs for the multi-milliondollar centre reveal the facility’s exteriors, kitchen and dining area and residential family units, which have been considered to create a safe and serene environment where families can feel at home.

Jobs for Geelong Diversifying the use of the refinery site supports Viva Energy’s ongoing economic contribution to the region. Currently the refinery has a 700-strong workforce and the Energy Hub will generate around 200-250 construction and up to 100 ongoing jobs. The Energy Hub will also play a key role in the transition to a low-carbon future. It will bring new technology, new skills and new opportunities to Geelong.

Subject to the relevant planning and board approvals, there will be a busy construction period at the refinery site throughout 2023 and 2024. To find out more attend our Information Session.

Shire ponders 24/7 cat curfew

A review of cat curfews is under way at Surf Coast Shire Council, with a survey welcoming community feedback. Council is considering cat curfews as part of its Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022-25, which guides how people, dogs and cats can live together. Local law requires cats in urban areas in the Surf Coast Shire to be securely confined to the owner’s premises from 8pm to 6am. In rural areas there are no restrictions as it is difficult to confine a cat to a farm, and they are often instrumental in controlling vermin. Mayor Libby Stapleton encouraged people to share their views on cat curfews to help determine whether to keep the current rules or to consider changes, including a 24-hour cat“Therecurfew.are 924 cats registered as domestic pets across the shire, with half of those in the Torquay Ward,” she said. “While we only receive a low number of complaints about cats – we had 58 in 2021 – we recognise that free-roaming cats can have a negative impact on native wildlife and neighbouring pets. “As well as helping prevent harm to wildlife, cat curfews improve the health and safety of cats. A cat curfew can prevent injuries that can occur through fights with other cats, being run over by a vehicle, eating toxic plants or poisons, or from wandering onto neighbouring households where they could cause a nuisance.”

The cat curfew survey can be completed via surfcoast.vic.gov.au/yoursay before 5pm Monday,September 12.

We’re planning to create a sustainable, liveable, more resilient municipality by planting more trees during the next 10 years and beyond and we want your input. Planting more trees will provide more shade, produce cleaner air and create more appealing places to live. We want to understand your priorities regarding the benefits of trees by capturing values, preferences and behaviours linked to trees, identifying specific locations where you would like to see tree planting, and identify elements to inform tree species selection such as colour and type. With your feedback about our One Million Trees Plan, we can ensure we select the right trees and plant them where they are needed most.

We have released new videos and an interactive online simulation of how the Pakington North Precinct could develop over the next 20 years. Last year, Council adopted the final Pakington Street and Gordon Avenue Urban Design Framework (UDF) for the Heritage Core and Gordan Avenue precincts and committed to further engagement to help increase community understanding of the intent of building controls proposed for the Pakington North Precinct. We want to help the community understand the proposed built form controls and how they will be used to shape the renewal of the northern end of Pakington Street. Community members will have the opportunity to talk to urban designers at one of three neighbourhood chats on Pakington Street or join an online webinar. The UDF will be used to guide future growth and development including built form outcomes, streetscape design, movement and access, land use, and assist in the assessment of future development proposals.

Dave O’Neil is no stranger to Geelong; his wife hails from the city and he is an avowed Cats supporter.ButO’Neil, one of Australia’s best-loved comedians, is looking forward to performing next Thursday at the Palais as a contrast to his last Geelong gig. “I did the Corio footy club three weeks ago on a Saturday night, which was interesting … nah, they were great,” O’Neil said. “We were pulling up and Geelong were playing Port Adelaide, and they almost lost. I said to Brad [Oakes], the other comic, man, if Geelong loses it’s not gonna be pretty inside that“Butclub.thank God, Geelong won and we went in and had a great time at Corio.” O’Neil will be one half of a double feature at the Palais alongside fellow comedic veteran Peter Hellier on Thursday, August 25, which will be hosted by Evan Hocking. O’Neil said the show was for anyone from teenagers to grandmothers, but certain demographics would find his material even more relevant. “If you’re a middle-aged married person, it’s possibly the perfect show for you,” he said. “I’ll be talking about parenting, how life was better in the 80s, and of course my love of the Geelong Cats. I’ve got about three minutes of Geelong jokes then I’ll just talk about the Cats. “They’re not playing that weekend, so I’m expecting a few of them to be there. Tom Hawkins, Gryan Myers, they’ll probably be sitting down the front. “And then they can rub it into Peter Hellier, who’s a Collingwood supporter.” O’Neil, who did a number of gigs via Zoom during lockdown, said he was really enjoying being back in front of live audiences again. “It’s been great, I did a lot of online gigs, which were also great, but audiences are pretty happy to be out seeing live stuff again,” he said. “Although sometimes that’s a downside, I did a school fundraiser the other day and they were off their trolleys, all these parents who hadn’t been out for a long time. But generally it’sbeenreallygoodtobebackoutthereagain.”

Three public open spaces in Highton are in the hands of community feedback as to how they can be improved according to the City of Greater Geelong. The three reserves are Stanbury Avenue Reserve (2-14 Stanbury Avenue), Esperance Crescent Reserve (34-40 Esperance Crescent) and Morena Street Reserve (33-39 Orana Road and 11-21 Old Flour Mill Road). Stanbury Avenue Reserve has existing features including a basketball halfcourt, but has been identified for upgrade. The other reserves are undeveloped. The city is conducting a two-stage engagement process to develop concept plans for the reserves, which will guide improvement works to follow. The first stage of the process is a short community survey about each of the reserves, open until September 4 at yoursay. geelongaustralia.com.au/HOSR.Thesurveysaskforresidents’suggestions for improvement at each location and aim to help the city gain a clear picture of the challenges and opportunities for the three sites. WORLD’S MOST SCENIC RAILWAY JOURNEYS SBS, Saturday, 7.35pm

PICK OF THE WEEK In the picture: Rachel Griffiths chats with acclaimed artist John Olsen for Great SouthernLandscapes

It’s comforting that over 10 seasons of grim discoveries (aka dead bodies), our titular protagonist hasn’t changed much, especially in her appearance. After countless murder cases, Detective Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn, pictured) could be forgiven for being haunted by the horrors of her small, windswept town, turning up to work in track pants and gumboots. Instead, her olive-green trench coat and bucket hat live on. It’s one of the ways the charming series stays true to Ann Cleeves’ novels. In the season’s penultimate instalment, Vera investigates when the body of a medic, Dr Lucy Yo (Joyce Veheary), is found in the back of a burnt-out car. 9-1-1: LONE STAR Seven, Monday, 9pm There’s nothing like a spot of therapy to really get to the nitty-gritty of a character. From the creators of AmericanHorrorStoryand Glee this fast-paced procedural serves up drama from a Texan fire, police and ambulance department, but lately an emotional blaze has been smoking inside firefighter Owen (Rob Lowe, pictured). This week, the troubled veteran of emergency situations finally opens up about his childhood, uncovering a hidden fear that is tested when the 126 gets a call involving a clown at a young boy’s birthday party. Grace (Sierra McClain) reaches out to a co-worker after a devastating emergency call.

Who would have thought that a humble yet beautiful doco series celebrating spectacular train journeys around the globe could be must-watch TV in 2022? Besides the fact that most of the world has been cooped up at home for years, there’s something meditative about drinking in the scenery from a train from destinations dotted across the world map. Tonight, a vintage luxury train, the NorthernBelle, chugs from Chester to Cardiff featuring the spectacular Cefn Viaduct, a choir, a castle and old steam engines. It’s wonderfully cathartic.

VERA ABC TV, Sunday, 8.30pm

GREAT SOUTHERN LANDSCAPES ABC TV, Tuesday, 8pm Presenter Rachel Griffiths may be famous as a world-class actor, but the TotalControlstar is in her element in this art lovers’ series. After delving into Arthur Streeton’s work inspired by the Hawkesbury River and Clarice Beckett’s portrayal of Melbourne’s Luna Park, this week, Griffiths dons an akubra for a journey to the stunningly beautiful and other-worldly Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre in South Australia. She searches for the spot where John Olsen drew inspiration for his 1975 painting and has a lively chat with the artist in his home. On the banks of the lake, Griffiths also gets to know Martha Watts and Colleen Strangways, elders of the Arabana people.

Charlotte Guest has just finished a novel by Torquay author Miranda Luby. (Supplied)

Favourite book of all time? Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey. The story of Menolly destined to be a Harper on a colonised planet in the distant future, she struggles against the archaic rule that only men can be musicians, and after running away she becomes a faux mother to a brood of baby dragons, insert angst and world building here, and becomes a musician in the harper hall.

Favourite book of all time? This is an almost-impossible question. I have so many favourites, but there have been certain books that have meant something special to me at different times in my life. AnneofGreenGables and JaneEyre were two books I read as a young girl which fuelled my love of reading and instilled in me a sense of rebelliousness. The Poems of Catullus sent me on a years-long path of reading and studying ancient verse. But some more recent books that I am very, very fond of are: TheWomanintheWindow by Sulari Gentill, StillLife by Sarah Winman, Groundskeeping by Lee Cole, Fever of Animals by Miles Allinson, Dropbear by Evelyn Araluen, and Frankenstein and Cleopatraby Coco Mellors.

Favourite childhood book? Just one? My favourite book as a child was Bottersnikes and Gumbles by SA Wakefield. The bottersnikes are awful, angry creatures who prey on the sweet, squishy, giggly gumbles and trap them in jam tins so they can’t escape. It has a strong message about protecting our environment that is even more relevant today than it was in 1967 when the book was first published. Favourite book of all time? As Albus Dumbledore says, “Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic.” My favourite book has to be the HarryPotterseries by JK Rowling. She reintroduced a generation of children to the joys and wonder of reading. They changed the face of publishing and proved that children were capable of reading longer books than were previously available. They also paved the way for myriad authors to publish fantasy genre books.

Favourite book of all time? I don’t enjoy this question – I like reading everything. I do really love IntotheWildby Jon Krakauer which is a biography about a young man who ultimately gave himself to the wilderness to see if he could obtain some kind of transcendence. It just opens your eyes up to different ways of thinking about yourself and your place in society, capitalism, colonialism and beyond. What do you think are the benefits of reading? Reading is communication, which I think is fundamental to human interaction and health. It’s fantastic when younger readers come in and discuss books with us, we love it. We can learn different perspectives or different opinions. I’m halfway through my masters in creative writing and the ways in which words and writing can inform and shape people is so powerful. What genre is your favourite? For a long time I loved fantasy and anything betweenfictionmagical.ThesedaysIreallylikeexperimentalorcreativewritingthatblursthelinesgenres–somethinglike

I really enjoy her writing style and the topics she chooses to discuss in her fiction. I’m also getting into the foraging so I have my copy of WildMushroomingby Alison Pouliot and Tom May or my copy of EatWeedsbyDiegoBonettothatI’mflicking through constantly.

Connie Smith Bookgrove, Ocean Grove What are you currently reading? Forty Nights by Pirooz Jafari, Sadie Starr’s Guide to Starting Over byMirandaLuby, and How to Spell Catastrophe by Fiona Wood.

Favourite childhood book? The entire Famous Five Series by Enid Blyton. My dad would read them out loud to me at bedtime, and I would pretend I couldn’t read chapter books yet so he would read me just one more chapter.

What are you currently reading? I am currently reading The Detective’s Guide to Ocean Travel by Nicki Greenberg. It is shortlisted for the Book of the Year for Younger Readers. It’s a historical mystery set in 1927 on a cruise ship where the priceless Saffron Diamond goes missing and the crime must be solved. It has plenty of red herrings to keep the pages turning. It’s a great read for kids aged nine to 12.

Laura Farrington’s favourite book of all time is Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey. (Supplied)

Favourite childhood book? Oooh, that would have to be Enid Blyton’s FarawayTreebooks.NotonlybecauseIloved the magical stories, but because my dad built me his own version of the faraway tree in our backyard: a rambling series of structurally –unsound ladders and platforms with fairy statues and other strange ornaments that bore an uncanny resemblance to Saucepan Man and Moonface. I spent hours and hours in that tree pretending I lived in the Enchanted Wood. It was pretty special.

Amelia Dew reckons Bottersnikes and Gumbles is the best children’s book she has read. (Supplied)

What are you currently reading? I have just finished a fantastic new young adult novel by Torquay author Miranda Luby called SadieStarr’sGuidetoStarting Over . This is Miranda’s debut novel, which was shortlisted for the 2020 Text Prize as a manuscript and has just been released this month. It follows Sadie, a teenage perfectionist obsessed with the idea of starting her life afresh whenever things go awry. When her dad’s new job requires the family to move from Sydney to Melbourne, Sadie views the relocation as the ideal opportunity to reinvent herself. It’s a

Favourite childhood book? The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. I wanted to be Moonface! I wasn’t impressed that the character of Connie was made out to be so snobby and self centred though. Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I read this when I was 11 and it made me fall in love with the idea of the wilderness and all that you can discover about yourself out there.

To celebrate Book Week next week, the Independent asked some of Greater Geelong’s librarians and bookshop staff to share their passion for reading.

Laura Farrington Children’s & youth services librarian, Geelong Regional Libraries (visit Laura at Newcomb Library) What are you currently reading? Slayer by Kiersten White. Set in the future of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Universe, where slayers are still being discovered and watchers are still training them. The Buffy universe changed my life and who didn’t want to be a librarian like Giles?

Interior Niro has pretty good interior space for its class and the styling is attractive with a relatively modern look. The Niro Hybrid has 425 litres of boot space with the rear seats up, or 1419 litres with the second row folded. To achieve this volume there’s a space-saver spare under the boot floor.

Styling The Niro S HEV gets the latest iteration of the Kia Tiger grille with halogen headlights and LED daytime running lights and taillights. The GT-Line variants get LED headlights. The S HEV runs on 16-inch alloy wheels, the two EV models on 17-inch and the S GT-line on 18s. The gloss-black roof rails are a nice touch and add an upmarket look to the Niro.

vehicle for its class, indeed it’s not

short of being a medium sized model.

Engines / transmissions Niro has a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 77kW of power and 144Nm of torque. It combines with a 32kW 170Nm electric motor to produce 104 kW and 265 Nm. Safety Kia Niro has autonomous emergency braking including car, pedestrian, cyclist and intersectionLane-keepintervention.andlane-follow assist is handy for driver who aren’t paying full attention and tend to wander about from time to time. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert and avoidance is fitted to all models of the Niro. Our test car had safe-exit assist to prevent opening the door into an approaching car or cyclist. Reverse parking collision avoidance is handy as it can be all but impossible to see others vehicles, or people on foot when revising in tight carparks. Driving Performance is very good with the usual instantaneous response from the accelerator that’s such a delightful part of any vehicle with electricity as part, or all, of its powertrain. It’s a comparatively heavy vehicle so it doesn’t have a huge amount of get up and go that we like in our vehicles. Those using it in a normal manner will almost certainly find it more than adequate.Handling is good as Niro and other Kia models are specially set up to suit the needs and desires of Australian drivers. It turns in promptly and holds the road at speeds that aren’t likely to be used by drivers of family cars. There is a head-up display for the driver, but as happens all too often it doesn’t work well if you’re wearing polarising sunglasses - as I do. Some carmakers have prevented this problem by angling the display in a slightly different direction. Kia may care to try this in an update - here’s hoping. The front seats are a good size and we found them comfortable even after several long drives we did as part of our road test reviews. The squared off rear end mean that the getting in and out of the back part of the cabin is easy. Rear seat passengers also have space but if those in the front set their seats back a long way some in the back may find their legroom is tight. It makes sense to take people who are going to be sitting in these seats to come along to the showroom and try them out for size. This may mean you not buying this model and perhaps trying a larger Kia, or perhaps going to look at rival cars. There are air vents in the back of the centre console so the passengers have an even more pleasantHyundairide.says the hybrid models have combined fuel usage of 4.0L/100km for the hybrid. We used three to four litres per hundred during open road driving and five to seven litres per hundred kilometres in city and suburban running.

The model we tested has a 10.25-inch central screen as well as a 10.25-inch instrument display. These sit in a wide panel that stretches across most of the front of the dash area. The quality is high and it’s easy to read them at a quick glance. This is an important safety feature as, despite my best intentions, I do tend to look at the centre screen to change radio stations or for other reasons.

Summing up Kia Niro hybrid is an exceptional vehicle in many ways, it has minimal fuel consumption if driven correctly and is still pretty economical if you push hard. It’s attractively styled and practical. Combined with that very impressive warranty it’s certainly one to be added to your list of vehicles under consideration in its class. and the double chance. Highton hosted Geelong Lawn in the third match, and made the most of the home court advantage, producing a 4-2 win. The day went well for the home team with Olivia Campbell, Ruby Dowd and Michelle De Paoli taking three of the four singles, but Lawn tried hard to push the match to a draw, narrowly missing out on the first doubles in a tie-break and Sienna Laing and Jasmine Williams winning the second 6-3. But this wasn’t enough to stop the home team taking the win. The final match saw third placed Leopold travel to Lara in what was the closest match of theLeopold’sday.

Geelong are racing against the clock to have two stars fit for the AFL finals, with Jeremy Cameron and Rhys Stanley both under injury clouds. Key forward Cameron suffered a low-grade right hamstring strain during the final stages of last week’s big win over Gold Coast. It is the same leg in which he suffered three hamstring injuries last year. The minor premier Cats expect Cameron to be fit for their qualifying final in week one, with the 29-year-old having three weeks to recover from the setback.“Wechose to take a no-risk policy and decided not to have him return to the

Swans and Tigers clash

Milestone man Patrick Dangerfield says winning this year’s premiership would mark a “finishing piece” of career achievements, but it won’t define him as a player. Dangerfield will become the 99th player in VFL/AFL history to reach the 300-game milestone when he lines up in Saturday’s clash with West Coast at GMHBA Stadium. The 32-year-old’s career has been littered withindividualsuccess eightAll-Australians, the 2016 Brownlow medal, and three best and fairests with Geelong to go with one at Adelaide.Theone glaring omission has been premiership success. The closest he came was in 2020, when Geelong led Richmond by 22 points in the opportunityweekend,theTigersgrandfinalbeforetheDustinMartin-inspiredrompedhometowinby31points.WiththeCatstofinishontopofladderregardlessofresultsthisDangerfieldhasanothergoldentoendhisflagdroughtover the coming weeks. But even if it doesn’t come to fruition, he won’t let it define him. “I think it’s the finishing piece if you will, but I don’t think it necessarily defines players,” Dangerfield told reporters on Wednesday.“It’swhat we all play for, but there’s so much of our game that you take enjoyment from, not just the final game in September. “Clearly that would be a wonderful thing to achieve, and we’ve given ourselves a shot this year. We’re in a good position. “But there’s so much enjoyment externally to just Dangerfieldthat.” played 154 games across eight seasons at Adelaide before making a high-profile switch to Geelong at the end of 2015.Cats coach Chris Scott was full of praise for Dangerfield’s impact both on and off the field.“From a club’s perspective, we were at a real point of transition when Pat came in and he changed our club for the better,” Scott said. “Obviously on the field, but that wasn’t the most significant part in my opinion. He changed us off the field. “He gave our playing group some confidence and has really influenced the culture that we continue to try to build. He’s been integral to that.”

week’s game could set the tone for both sides’ finalsSouthcampaigns.Barwoncoach Jordee Nichols said the back-to-back games against the Tigers could be viewed as either a positive or a negative. “We’ve got to play them two weeks in a row, which could be good or bad, but we’ll go in looking at it positively,” she said. “The first team we played them this season and won in Colac there was a Cougars game the next day, so both sides were managing players and probably didn’t have their best players on the court for the full four quarters. “So it’s going to be really interesting to see how it goes this Saturday with both teams at full-strength. I think it’ll be a good chance for both teams to suss each other out and see what we need to work on for the following game.” Nichols said she and her players had nothing but respect for Colac, and despite the friendships between the two playing groups the two games would be intense battles. “We’re under no illusions it’s going to be easy [for the first game in Colac],” she said. “They’re amazing, the whole Colac club. And while we’re all really good friends off the court we’re super competitive. “Their defensive end is very, very strong and they’re a huge four-quarter team, they literally never go away. You could be 10, 15 goals up and never feel safe. They’re extremely fit, they always run out a full game and just keep coming.“It’llbe hard to beat them twice in a row, but it’ll be hard for either team to win twice in a row here. It’s a good challenge to have and I couldn’t be prouder of the girls for getting themselves in a position to get the second chance considering we weren’t even in finals last year.”

Scott is confident both Jeremy Cameron (hamstring) and Rhys Stanley (adductor) will be fit for week one of the finals. “Those two are right on track. They’ve both been running,” he said. Justin Chadwick, AAP

Scott is urging his players to embrace the growing expectations surrounding the team. “We’d much rather have the privilege of that pressure than explain why we’re not in contention at this time of year,” he said. “It’s all pretty exciting. You can’t do great things in life without a little bit of anxiety as your partner. We’re feeling good about it.”

spot a game ahead of Newton & Chilwell in third, although both sides were already virtually guaranteed to finish in either second or third and therefore face off in the first round of finals. But it does serve as a dress rehearsal for the qualifying final, with both teams sure to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of both their opponents and themselves. This week Colac will face South Barwon in their rescheduled round 16 match, with the Swans coming off a 69-point win over Bell Park.South Barwon forward Andrew Boseley booted 10 for the home side as they cruised home, winning 23.15 (153) to 11.8 (74). But the honours for greatest winning margin this week went to Geelong West Giants, who finished their home and away season with bang despite missing out on a finals spot, beating St Albans 25.19 (169) to 1.1 (7).The Giants featured 12 individual goal-kickers for their 25 goals; Angus Codd led the charge with five, while Phillip Moimoi and Baxter Mensch contributed four and three,Leaguerespectively.leaderSt Mary’s is guaranteed to finish in top spot after beating Grovedale 14.21 (105) to 8.9 (57), now sitting eight points clear of Colac with each side having just one game left to play. St Mary’s also have a catch-up game this weekend, playing away against fifth-ranked St Joseph’s, who were awarded the win against Lara after their game was called off due to lightning and hail late in the third quarter when Joeys held a 33-point lead. Despite the lack of impact the match will have on the ladder, both St Joseph’s and St Mary’s will be looking for the win this week to continue building momentum heading into the finals Leopold’sseries.run of form continued with a 59-point win over North Shore, now almost certainly finishing in fourth place less than two percentage points below Newton & Chilwell.
