The investigation found the maximum number of passengers the balloon operator allowed meant there was insufficient room for them to adopt the backwards-facing landing position specified in the operator’s procedures.Asa result, Picture This Ballooning has reduced the maximum number of passengers the balloon can carry to ensure all passengers can achieve the required position.
“Not all required actions were completed during the pre-flight briefing, probably due to time pressure and the pilot’s assumption that all passengers would understand an abbreviated briefing,” he said. Additionally, despite windy conditions, the pilot rejected several suitable landing fields to avoid logistical and operational difficulties after“Whilelanding.some landing options may not be ideal due to the impact on landowner relations, or the ease of access to the site after landing, pilots are reminded to prioritise occupant safety over such considerations, when faced with deteriorating wind conditions,” Mr Macleod said.

By Mibenge Nsenduluka, AAP Pilot errors and windy weather led to a hot air balloon accident that left two people seriously injured on New Year’s Eve in the Yarra Valley, an investigation by the aviation watchdog has found. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said passengers aboard a scenic charter flight by operator Picture This Ballooning near the Yarra Valley in December received an “incom plete” pre-flight passenger safety briefing.
The bureau’s director of transport safety Stuart Macleod said the inadequate instruc tions “probably” resulted in three passengers adopting an inappropriate deep squat position prior to the hard landing, causing two of them to be seriously injured.
The incident occurred on December 31 last year, when 16 passengers and one balloon pilot set out for a ride near Glenburn, north of the Yarra Valley. The pilot was notified about the windy conditions and assessed multiple landing options before making an approach to land in a field.

During the approach, the pilot manoeuvred the balloon to clear a fence before descending rapidly to avoid contact with nearby powerlines, and made a hard landing.

Votes in for pump track
“Each site will have its own specific upgrades, but a focus of this project is to make sure each building is well-insulated and sealed, so they need less energy to run and air stays cleaner inside. This also means that if a disaster strikes, the batteries on site – charged by rooftop solar if air quality permits – can run for longer,” Cr Skelton said.
Works will soon begin on making Yarra Ranges Council community facilities more energy efficient and ready for disaster following state and federal funding.
By Renee Wood
The Memo in Healesville,Yarra Glen Memorial Hall and Coldstream Community Centre will be the first facilities upgraded, with works starting in August.
It’s expected the track will be well received by a wide variety of riders and suitable for scooters, bikes, mountain bikes, rollerblades.
On days of extreme or catastrophic Fire Danger Rating, or when major bushfire activity is predicted in the area, leaving the area early is always the safest option. Neighbourhood Safer Places and Fire Refuges exist as places of last resort. Find out more about these at yarraranges.vic. gov.au/saferplaces, and always have a bushfire plan ready to go.
The total cost of the Coldstream Railway Project is just under $1.1 million supported by state and federal funding.
The project’s expected to be completed by early 2024, meaning every corner in the shire will have a nearby facility that can operate on battery power and generators.
“Residents will recall how important being able to access charging points for phones, battery packs, torches, radios and other devices was in the aftermath of last years storm. Access to showers, water, a comfortable place to warm up or cool down and an information hub will be possible at these locations too.
The design has been chosen for the Coldstream Pump Track following a large community response to the voting. Some 271 votes were submitted, with a 44.6 per cent of respondents choosing Option #2 as their preferred design. Designers also met with the Coldstream Primary School with student feedback contributing to the final decision.
The funding support has come from the State’s Growing Suburbs Fund, and the Federal Local Roads and Community Infrastructure“Thankfund.you to the State and Federal Governments for recognising the importance of this project, particularly as we pass the one year anniversary of the catastrophic June 2021 storms.”
Paul Goodison from Yarra Ranges Council said the designers, Common Ground, were also able to refine the design to add features that were mentioned in the voting. The jump focused track now features a separate beginners loop and lines which you can follow for more intermediate and advanced options.“Youcan see that some people quite passionate about these things, so they had gone through in quite a bit of detail, which was good,” Mr Goodison said.
Design two received the most votes by the community. The jump focussed track has different lines which riders can travel to match their skill level.
Community facilities to get resilient upgrades
As part of the Climate Resilient Buildings for Our Community project, works will also be undertaken on Powelltown Reserve Pavilion, Warburton-Millgrove Sporting Complex, Yarra Centre Pool and stadium, Monbulk Community Link, Olinda Recreation Reserve Pavilion and Gary Tait Pavilion,YarraKilsyth.Ranges Deputy Mayor, Johanna Skelton, said the works on the nine facilities would mean that in the event of storm, heatwave, fire or flood, community would have a place to go.

“When disaster strikes and power goes out, the community need somewhere safe to go, ideally close to home, where they can access supplies and chat with people who can help them,” Cr Skelton said.
“This project is also located on the site of the Yarra Valley Trail, and there’s a new shared use path on Station Street that connects this site back to the township.” How the track all flows together from one loop to another is also a stand out feature, with other designs they may have been separated. Currently the landscaping works have already started and toilet blocks, asphalting and track works will begin in mid to late September.Completion is expected in December.

Liberals leader Matthew Guy announced the commitment onWednesday 17 August and said Victorians face a clear choice “between immediately rebuilding Victoria’s broken health system or a train line in 13 years time.” “As Premier, my first priority will be to fix the health crisis,” he said. “Our plan is about returning confidence for Victorians. VENTILATED WELL SPACES GET TOGETHER IN CHOOSE TO coronavirus.vic.gov.au/winter Go to Authorised and published by the Victorian Government, 1 Treasury Place, Melbourne. 12560003-ET34-22 NEWS Fees cut for young drivers
“It goes beyond just getting them on the road. It’s access to services, it’s access to em ployment, it’s an opportunity to get their li cence for some young people quicker than what they would have, because of the financial barrier at the end, especially for some of our L2P drivers,” he said.
Mr D’Abico said there has been an increase in the number of L2P drivers in recent times.
By Callum Ludwig The hip pockets of young Yarra Ranges road users are receiving a welcomed boost through the cutting of learner and probationary licence fees, as well as online testing fees. The Victorian Government announced that from Monday 15 August, aspiring L-platers will save up to $51.40 in licence and online testing fees, while learner drivers going for their Pplates will save up to $133.30 in licence and online hazard perception testing fees.
“This new change for learners like the ones we have in L2P is for learners that maybe are already facing financial barriers, barriers around access to a car or to a person that can take them driving, the financial barrier has now been removed. That reason why some of our learners perhaps couldn’t take their test is no longer Driversthere.”who have not incurred demerit points or committed road safety offences in the previous three years will also benefit from the recommenced Safe Driver Discount. These safe road users will receive a 25 per cent discount on their next licence renewal, meaning a saving of up to $73 on a new ten-year driver licence for driver licence renewals generated after 1 October 2022.
Mr D’Abico said he thinks it is a fantastic in centive to keep people driving in a safe manner.
“It definitely means that they have the funds available to put elsewhere in their learn ing to drive. If they put that towards some extra time with a professional instructor, it’s a great way to ensure success in their test.”
“At this point in time, we’re all facing an increase in bills and the cost of living has gone up so every little bit helps, and I think a Safe Driver Discount does two things. It helps everyone’s hit pocket but at the same time it also helps us all recognise an additional benefit to driving safely, beyond it being a benefit in itself,” he “There’ssaid.alot of people that will be looking forward to when, when it comes in play and they realise that they’ve actually not had any traffic offences in the last few years and are eligible for it. For our new learners and new probationary licence drivers, it’s an extra incentive to keep them driving safely right from theOverget-go.”138,000 Victorians who get their L’s each year and 121,000 who get their P’s are expected to have more money in their pockets thanks to these changes.Victoria’s new online learner permit and hazard perception tests will also be free from Monday, now used by 90 per cent of customers.

“Woods Point Rd is by no means a low-risk crossing, in fact, I’d say it’s an extremely high risk crossing. In the afternoons, when the kids cross from the school side, there are blind spots to the right and the left.”

Crossing safety at risk
“Kids come out on the Reefton bus that arrives at 10 past eight, dropped by the bus on the other side of the road, and need to cross Woods Point Rd with traffic that is not obeying the 40km/h speed limit for the most part,” he said.“So our teachers are manning the crossing from 8am, a small school with small teaching staff, and that often means there’s only one teacher on the school grounds, and none if they are at the crossing.”
“As teachers, we understand the need for risk assessments, and there are obviously some roads that are higher risk than others. No question about that. But I don’t think it’s good enough to just leave a crossing completely un supervised,” he said.

“We spoke to many politicians to make sure that we were getting the support that was needed for the bill to go through to the Upper House.“Sofor the Upper House to pass it so effectively, because we were expecting it to be a September thing, but for it to be passed now, says that all the hard work that’s been done is actually paying off and the politicians and their constituents hopefully, support the Trea ty Authority.”Bytakingthis step forward, Uncle Andrew said Traditional Owners can begin identifying what they would like to see in their communi ties for the future, not just in one generation’s time but in four or five generations.

“It’s a jointly agreed process and if there are any disputes in the future, then they can be resolved, the process can be used and re spected using our traditional lore of the land and common law, using our cultural authority, that is then at the heart of the journey towards Treaty,” he said. “If issues can be resolved, then the discussions and the deliberations and the agree ments about individual Traditional Owner groups’ Treaty aspirations can be confirmed.” Not expecting a decision on this Bill so quickly, Uncle Andrew said the Assembly first visited Parliament House on 22 June to discuss the implementation of a Treaty Authority.
By Callum Ludwig A petition has been formed to present to the Victorian Parliament to cease all levels of logging of native and public forests.Thepetitioners have requested that the Legislative Council call on the Gov ernment to immediately close VicFor ests, stop all logging and bring forward, for immediate effect, the schemes to assist and retrain all employees affected by the Anthonyclosure.Long organised the peti tion and said he had been getting a little frustrated with the lack of action on protecting our native species.

By Callum Ludwig Yarra Ranges Council is seeking community feedback on its proposed Economic Devel opment Strategy, which will help dictate the future of the region’s economy for the next 10 years. The first stage of engagement, undertaken in 2021, asked residents and businesses for their ideas on how to facilitate economic growth, strengthen business resilience, create jobs, attract investment and improve liveabil ity in the Yarra Ranges and the resulting draft strategy is now open for feedback. Yarra Ranges Mayor Cr Jim Child, said that strong strategic planning for the next 10 years would be crucial to economic growth in the Yarra“TheRanges.economic conditions that enabled us to flourish in the past are changing, with new technology, climate change and global trends having impacts on our businesses and com munity,” he said. “We’re setting out to build a sustainable economy, one that not only meets the needs of our community, but also our environment.”

By Callum Ludwig Hillcrest CFA has once again joined the brigade of Upper Yarra firefighters who are set to tackle the ninth annual Melbourne Firefighters Stair Climb. The event is on Saturday 10 September 2022 and 600 Firefighters and other Emergency Service Personnel are set to climb the 28 floors of Crown Metropol Hotel wearing 25kgs of turnout gear and breathing apparatus.Member Rochelle Poulton, who is set to take on her fifth climb, said every year they have more and more members willing to participate.“Theyall hear how good of an experience it is, and this year we have five members participating. The last few years have been done virtually, which isn’t great, but it was Covid times and now we are definitely excited,” she said. “We’re doing it in person again this year and it’s definitely a great accomplishment and feeling that you get within yourself. We’re doing it together, for each other, and with each other.” Ms Poulton will be joined by Andrew Smith, Vicki White, Yiota Carabourniotis and Paul Scott. Ms Poulton said everyone is stoked about getting back to doing it in person.
“the community based bushfire management program really embeds itself in the com munity, asks community how they would like to address their risk, what kind of things does the community think it can do to help prepare other community members and build resilience,” Ms Hanrahan said. “Every community and how it’s engaged with is different because it’s tailor made to that particular community and directly reflective of how the community wants to engage with agencies.”There’s further sub groups within the wider group which work on specific areas, such as improving telecommunications and emergency responses.CFAcrews, HICCI, SES, Landcare and Healesville EnvironmentWatch are all a part of theAnyonegroup. in the community is welcome to join the group which meets bi monthly at the Darron honey centre. Contact Healesvillebushfire@gmail.com or Elly Hanrahan 0408 694 748.
The project engages with communities and organisations to allow groups to form to lead and develop their own local projects and platforms in an approach to understand local strengths and reduce bushfire risks. A group was set up in Healesville in 2017 with DEWLP facilitators working alongside lo cal residents to create opportunities to better inform and assist. The Healesville group has done this through various projects including, a trivia night fo cussing on emergencies, presentations from culture burning practitioners and building a Healesville Community Emergency Hub. DEWLP facilitator Elly Hanrahan said it’s a great project that steps away from ‘one size fits all’ communication strategy, but allows the lo cal groups to drive how the community wants to engage with agencies.
At the August 1 AGM, Red Cross members voted unanimously to rebrand the group to Yarra Valley Red Cross.

“It’s really hard to stay motivated with doing it virtually, especially when we had kilometre radius attached to us because there’s not really a whole lot of stairs down our way,” she said. “In person again, it’s just the atmosphere with everyone lining up, it’s just an awesome feeling, seeing everyone to go off, and when you actually get to the top and you run through the banner, it’s just a very good feeling.”Over the last five years, Hillcrest has raised over $8505 towards the cause, which has supported organisations like the Alfred Hospital’s Burns Unit, The Black Dog Institute, Lifeline, Fortem Australia and The Triple 000 Foundation. They hope to reach $10,000 this year. Ms Poulton said they are doing it for the cause and supporting those in emergency services.“Especially now more than ever, everyone has realised that mental health is important over the last few years. It’s time that instead of just taking care of everyone else when we volunteer, we should also start taking care of ourselves,” she said. “The stair climb is challenging, especially when you get to the halfway mark because you’re so close but you’re still so far. But it’s a really good reminder that even though that was hard, It’s nowhere near as hard as what people who suffer from mental health problems will be going through.”
The Hoddles Creek Red Cross branch has been rebranded to Yarra Valley Red Cross in a bid to better reflect its wider coverage of the region andForvolunteers.sometime, the Hoddles Creek group has been the only one operating after other branch es folded and currently has 47 members who come from across theYarra Ranges shire. It’s hoped the new naming will now make it easier for others to join by strengthening the focus of a wider Yarra Valley representation.

“It’s really encouraging people to think about what type of emergency might affect them - it might be a flood, it might be a fire, it might be a tree falling on a house, but it might be that your partner is ill and you don’t drive and how are you going to get them to medical help,” Ms Seabrook said. By Renee Wood Foundations Family Day Care is celebrating the success of one of its educators and coordinator in recent awards for the sector. Healesville educator Julie Parker has won the Regional Educator Award and coordinator Kathi Hewitson has been awarded the Victorian/Tasmania Coordinators Award in the 2022 Family Day Care Australia (FDCA) Excellence in Family Day Care Awards. Ms Hewitson is now a finalist for the national award, which will be revealed in September. Both women were thrilled to be recognised for their service allowing children and families grow through Foundations. Ms Hewitson said it’s a wonderful honour and it’s a credit to Julie and her other 10 educators.“Iwouldn’t be the coordinator I am without them. They constantly inspire me to be better and to do better, to find new innovative ways of doing things so that ultimately the kids are the ones who thrive even more,” Ms Hewitson said. Julie Parker has been working in family day care for 16 years after first joining the council’s program offering the service. This was cancelled after nine years and Julie has since been working with other family day care not for profits. Now Julie is with Foundations Family Day Care which operates acrossVictoria and soon into South Australia. Ms Parker said joining Foundations has given her the opportunity to improve and grow.“When you’ve been doing a job for such a long time, you can get a bit set in your ways… and I do feel that I’ve taken a giant leap forward again with Foundations as far as giving you that that passion to keep learning more about the children and about the Early Childhood,” Ms Parker said.
Eildon MP Cindy McLeish visited recently to pass on some hand-knitted winter jump ers from generous donator Helen from Deer Park, and said Ms Develyn and the volunteers work hard and do a wonderful job in providing a safe, welcoming environment and retreat for mothers and children in need.

By Callum Ludwig Benwerren in Yarra Junction has been provid ing time out from stress and challenges for women and children for over 44 years. A lovely old guest house with an open log fire on two acres of land hidden away in Yarra Junction, Benwerren hopes to provide respect, restoration and hope for those in need. CEO Dawn Develyn said there are all sorts of reasons people might need a break. “It was started by my parents, who were very aware that women needed time out, and it means they can get good food, warmth, comfort and a listening ear,” she said. “That break might be enough to help or they might need further help, and we can re fer them to other organisations or groups who might be able to meet their needs.” Benwerren was formed by the story of Ms Develyn’s mother Olive, who had just given birth to her second child when doctors diag nosed her father with cancer. Her husband was travelling a distance for work return ing on weekends to work on the farm. As she struggled with her own health issues and fam ily challenges, Olive’s compassion prompted her to think about how other women feel and foundBenwerrenBenwerren.ishopeful for funding to support the acquisition of a new children’s and family worker and Ms Develyn said this is more important after Covid unsettled chil dren’s education.

“The knowledge of family day care is very low - when people think childcare they think of centres. They don’t know that we’re under the same act and regulations and we can also get childcare subsidy for them,” Ms Hewitson said.“We get all the benefits of long day care… but we get so much more because we are family day Anyonecare”interested in looking for a family day care or to become an educator, can get in touch with Kathi Hewitson on 0421 599 416 or visit the website for more information https://www.ffdc.com.au/
“As is the case with many not-for-profit organisations, a donation, or extra pair of hands to help out goes a long way. More can always be done,” she said. “I took great pride recently in delivering two big bags full of beautiful hand-knitted children’s jumpers, vests and beanies that had been donated to my office. The team at Benwerren were delighted to be the recipient and have started distributing them to those staying at Benwerren when I visited.”
Family day cares operate out of the educator’s home and revolves around direct care over small groups of children. Ms Hewitson said the philosophies for the business are respecting nature, being out in the community, diversity, equity and inclusion.“Small groups means the children have the attention of an individual educator, as well as that they can be in care from six weeks right through to 13. So they’ve got continuity of care the whole time,” Ms Hewitson said.

Riveting sci-fi action flick
StarringPrey Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers and Michelle Thrush Rated MA15+ 4.5/5 The fifth film in the Predator franchise, Prey joins The Northman as another outstanding historical action film. In 1719, Naru (Amber Midthunder), a Comanche Native American woman, must battle a deadly alien hunter. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (whose first feature film was the excellent 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey is a thrilling character-driven actionMidthunderfilm. is captivating as Naru, conveying a fierce resolve and agile physicality. A ritual to prove herself as a hunter forms the film’s framing device, and the plot establishes Naru’s bravery and cleverness but also her inexperience and the well-meaning disapproval of her tribe. These factors give Naru further impetus to grow as a character beyond the immediate threat of the Predator. The Predator itself is a fearsome figure with several cool weapons and abilities, and a handful of scenes in the first act show it studying Earth’s predators by bloodily working up the food chain. The action sequences are brutal and well-composed, with the highlight being a grisly skirmish in a burned forest. Prey has fun moments of callback to earlier Predator films without going overboard. The film has been praised for its Indigenous American cast and historical accuracy, and is notably the first Hollywood film with a full Comanche dub. Prey features very well-developed relationships between Naru and her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) and mother Aruka (Michelle Thrush), but the rest of the tribesmen are not well-defined. The plot has several well-seeded details, including medicinal flowers and Naru’s bowstring, but an important moment in the otherwise enthralling climax feels quite contrived.Despite some rough edges in the plot, Prey is a riveting historical sci-fi action film with a phenomenal heroine and lead performance, and is streaming exclusively on Disney Plus. - Seth Lukas Hynes

I recently read of a couple walking along a beach while on vacation and the husband no ticed a large square patch of sand blocked off by a makeshift fence and a young man stand ing Whennearby.they enquired of him as to what it was, he explained that he worked around the clock with a team of volunteers, committed to guarding the eggs in each sea turtle’s nest. He said that once the hatchlings emerged from the nest, they were vulnerable to all kinds of predators, decreasing their chance of sur vival. He said scientists estimate that only one in every five thousand hatchlings reach adult hood. Those damning statistics hadn’t discouraged the young man – in fact his passion for serving the hatchlings increased. This is a similar to a story that I often told in the counselling room when clients were strug gling against life’s odds and feeling quite help less, or to encourage depressed clients to reframe their story, from watching their ‘navels’, to raising their eyes to notice someone else go ing through tough times who might need help.
In fact a mate of mine leads a team around Lakes Entrance even today. When my grand-daughter who lives in Canada and was only eight and in primary school, she developed a passion for the endangered Beluga whale and the Snow leopard. Then she started a club for raising money for saving both of those creatures from extinction. Her method was to sign members into the club for a fee, and in exchange they received a numbered certificate. ‘Chaiya’, I discovered, when she was born, that her name in Hebrew meant, ‘Life giver’, or ‘Mother of all life’, and is another variant to the name, ‘Eve’, the first mother. Speaking of Eve the original, and Adam who were commissioned to care for the animal kingdom and the herbal environment; we find that they failed in that task as we are doing today. They failed to work with the creator in the harmonic balance of our planet. A psalmist in ancient times wrote in amazement of the creator of that balance.
Do you know that Melbourne is a City of Literature, and the second city in the world to join the UNESCO City of Literature program as part of the wider Creative Cities Network? Currently there are 42 Cities of Literature across 28 countries in six continents. Melbourne joined the program in 2008, after Edinburgh (2004) and slightly before Iowa City (also 2008). According to Melbourne City of Literature Office website, all of the world’s Cities of Literature are committed to “the pursuit of excellence at a local level, as well as working together to create lasting global partnerships and cross-cultural initiatives, on top of developing local, national and international literary links.” This is done by sharing experiences, knowledge and best practices, and through professional and artistic exchange programs andIndeed, networks.since 2014, Melbourne has worked with other Cities of Literature as well as local, regional and national literary organisations to launch a dazzling range of strategic initiatives, partnership programs and international exchanges. For example, in 2018 Heidelberg and Fabriano initiated a project called the World Poetry Book. Melbourne-based Emily Zoey Baker and Chris Wallace-Crabbe were among 51 poets from 28 cities around the world to contribute to a special anthology titled ‘Poetic Encounters’. The book was made of handcrafted, foliosized paper from Fabriano (a City of Crafts and Folk Art), which was sent via Heidelberg to all Cities of Literature worldwide. After being filled with poems, written by hand in these poets’ original languages, the paper was sent back to Fabriano where the anthology was bound. The World Poetry Book was presented at the UNESCO Creative Cities Network meeting in Krakow and Katowice in June 2018. It was dedicated to all people worldwide valuing the power and richness of literature and advocating freedom of thought and speech. Another example of the Melbourne City of Literature Office’s good work is the Virtual Writers in Residence program.

How many books have you read this year and how many more are on your list to complete by the end of 2022? I don’t know the exact count but it would be about 10 so far, plus a few audio books. There’s always a book I want to read but there is definitely three (The Nowhere Child, Wuthering Heights, Speaking in Tongues) I want to finish before the year’s end and any others are just a bonus. What are you currently reading? Still Life by Sarah Winman. It’s been an interesting read so far, nothing like I expected when I picked it up in the book shop and read the blurb. I have no idea how it will end but I’m enjoying the journey - especially because its transported me to the beautiful Florence. Do you agree that you should never judge a book by its cover? I definitely agree. There is so much more to a book than just its cover, although, I am quite partial to a well designed, pretty cover, they always seem to grab my attention. Where do you like to read the most? I mostly read in bed as a way to calm my mind before sleep, although whenever the suns out on weekends I like to find a cosy corner and read until my heart’s content.
Author reveals best read
1. What are you currently reading? This Devastating Fever by Sophie Cunningham – it’s brilliant.

I will read anything Harlan Coben writes! Before that was The Wrong Woman by the wonderful J.P. Pomare. Which book have you read the most number of times and why? I usually re-read The Beach by Alex Garland everyIt’ssummer.anear-perfect novel written in the 90s, with relatable characters and an amazing setting. When I read it as a teen, I felt as though it was written for me. What book or series do you hope will be turned into a movie or tv show one day? City on Fire by Don Winslow. This is one of my favourite books in recent memory and is just asking for an adaptation! Who’s your all-time favourite book character? Pennywise the dancing clown, from Stephen King’s It. To this day, I can’t walk past an open drain without a shiver creeping up my spine. Author Christian White shares some of his favourite novels for book week. Picture: ON FILE

2. What book had the biggest impact on your life and why? I feel like my entire life has been swayed by books! Most recently, reading The Outrun by Amy Liptrot sent me to Orkney, which then shaped the last four years of my life as I worked on a PhD and novel inspired by the islands.

6. Who’s your all-time favourite book character? Oh gosh - this is tough! Right now, I adore Henry Montague from The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, which is a rollicking adventure set in the 18 th century. He’s ridiculously flawed, but somehow still utterly lovable.

By Callum Ludwig Many kids dream of owning and riding their own horse, but the reality is that it’s usually an expensive sport and out of reach for many families. However, the Upper Yarra Pony Club’s recent adoption of a Riders Without Horses (RWH) membership aims to open up the pastime to many more young riders.

“We’ve had heaps of interest from all over the place, it actually quite surprised me,” she said.“I’m sure it could lead on further if kids stick with it and are really committed to it, es pecially if we can train them to a standard that they can get sponsorship.I think especially the younger kids, such as the 12 to 14-yearold girls range, who have done it pretty tough through lockdown, probably more so than other age groups could really enjoy it.”
Upper Yarra Wildlife Rescue Network volunteers performing a wallaby rescue at Healesville Sanctuary in October 2021.
The session will be run at a local venue, close to the Warburton area. Ms Kimberley said participants will learn how to keep themselves and others safe and minimise harm to an animal. “They will also learn about the smaller animals that they can easily deal with, the ones we all start with when we’re doing rescue training and transport of animals. It’s the birds, pos sums, lizards, that are easier to contain and get to help,” she said. “They’ll also be learning about how to do pouch checks of kangaroos, possums and oth er marsupials.”Therearea number of considerations to make when rescuing an animal. If the animal is small, place it in a pillow case or on a towel in a well-ventilated box and cover securely, placed in a warm dark and quietKeeparea.handling and disturbance to the animal to a minimum to reduce stress, with do mestic animals and children well away and do not feed or force the animal to drink. Take the animal to a vet or licensed wildlife carer as soon as possible. Ms Kimberley said she thinks we have an obligation to help animals in trouble where possible.“Personally, I value our wildlife and I value all animals and I think our obligation is increased because we have destroyed a lot of habitats. We also run over them on the road or unintentionally poison them,” she said. “We have so much that we need to make up for in terms of what we’ve done to our native animals, so I just feel that we all need to take some responsibility. Often people just need to know that they can do it, and have the confidence to do it.”
“If they want to become volunteers, that is great but they might decide they don’t have time to and that’s fine as well. But if they come across a sick, injured or orphaned animal, they need to know what to do and just a little bit of knowledge or reassurance might mean they are able to.”

“It’s an eye opener for people on what it would be like to have their own horse who have never experienced it, we’ve got kids that have ridden before but can’t afford their own horses to those who are completely new.”
By Callum Ludwig The Upper Yarra Wildlife Rescue Network (UY WRN) is hosting a free training session to help Upper Yarra residents understand the do’s and dont’s of animal rescue. On Saturday 3 September from 10am to 4pm, an experienced trainer will introduce residents to and develop their skills in assess ing, rescuing, and transporting a range of na tive wildlife species.
District commissioner Anita Prowse said the decision to implement came as the current financial climate for people isn’t great. “Given what has happened over the last couple of years and is still happening in a lot of places, I think that kids that don’t have the opportunity to have their own horses, whether it be financial or family situations or simply aren’t allowed to, it certainly doesn’t mean that they’re not going to be talented or as keen as ones that have,” she said. “It’s an opportunity for everybody to have a go and there’s the social aspect of being away from their normal school friends and expanding their social circles a little bit with other kids that enjoy the same things.”
The signup, introductions and set-up for RWH members is at 9.30am at Wesburn Park Pony Club rooms on Sunday 4 September. All enquiries can go to Anita Prowse at 0409 953 345 or email anita.horses@gmail.com.

Embracing the quietness
A special exhibit at Yering Station has brought together works from bothYarraValley artist Da vid Miller and his late father’s Charles Miller. David said it’s the first time Charles’ sculptures have been in an exhibit since he died in 1981 and a first for the pair to also be on dis play“It’stogether.abitof a thrill actually to do that. I’d like to think he thought it was good,” David said. Curator Ewan Jarvis often contrasts paint ings with sculpture in the Cellar Door space and has done so for ‘Against the Current of Time’. “Ewan rang me up and said I’ve found a sculptor; I think it’s your father from the work that I saw in your garden, so I said that’s a wonderfulDavid’sidea.”featured works are oil on canvas landscapes, and said he’s trying to paint ‘quietness’.“I like the idea of finding a detail of the landscape that tells the viewer about all of the landscape.”
The works have mostly been completed during the pandemic – showing a reflection of when the time was quiet and calm, with some landscapes undisturbed. The pieces are from travels both close and a far.Mr Miller said his father’s work has been an influence and Charles’ pieces in the show were something he and his brother were part of.“He built things out of clay, so that sculpture there would have been a big column of clay and we would’ve been just been sitting there, sticking bits of clay on and adjusting it. “He made it but we would all be have been involved in it..... so he has to be an influence.” David said he’s passionate about people learning more about art in the Yarra Valley and showing in a cellar door opens up to another audience.“They’ve come here to taste wine; they haven’t come here to look at art…but I like that my work is being seen by people who maybe don’t go to art galleries.”
By Renee Wood
“The characters in it are drawn together because they want to save a lot of the Aboriginal heritage in the area, but it is really the story of the many relationships around those topics and how they approach it,” she said.
Lake of Scars follows Aboriginal and nonAboriginal people working against the clock to preserve and promote what they can of Lake Boort and its surrounds amidst the backdrop of treaty talks and the fight for water rights.
“One of them is a much older white farmer and the other one is a young guy, they want exactly the same things but are coming from completely different places together to do it, which is what you want to see happening to a greater extent within Australian culture.”

“The film shows that it’s not as easy as just wanting to make it happen because the two main people in the film both want the same thing, they’re striving towards the same thing, they’ve got the same goals and aims but they are coming from two very different places,” she said.
Ms Blackmore, who is a specialist documentary and current affairs editor based in Emerald, said the film adds to the conversation around recollection and the current push for an Indigenous Voice in parliament.
“It’s a really amazing chance to see a film that’s been doing festivals all over Australia, but you can see it for free and Healesville.” Directed by Bill Code and with the story told by Uncle Jack Charles, it follows Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people working against the clock to preserve and promote what they can of Lake Boort and its surrounds amidst the backdrop of treaty talks and the fight for water rights. The documentary, which runs for one hour and 34 minutes and was first released earlier in 2022, is a call to action for those who care about the values of Australia’s untold history, how cultures interconnect and building a blueprint for reconciliation on a local level.

Jim and Diana were married in 1962. Pictures: SUPPLIED Jim and Diana Viggers are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
By Renee Wood It’s not very often a couple reaches their 60th wedding anniversary, but when the milestone arrives it sure proves time for a wonderful cel ebration of love, family and community. That’s just the case with happy couple Jim and Diana Viggers from Yarra Glen who’re marking their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday 25 August. Many community members would have come to know Jim and Diana since they moved to the Yarra Valley in 1985. Jim was the last Healesville Shire president, serving 1993 and 1994 before the amal gamation and both have always been actively involved in local community groups and volunteering positions. Including Diana vol unteering at the Healesville Living and Learn ing Centre and at the former Yarra Valley Tour ism Information Centre. They have always believed in supporting one another through everything and always taking an interest in what one another does is important.“We’vedone everything together and supported each other. I think that’s the most im portant thing,” Diana said. “Life goes very quickly, so you make the most of every day and appreciate every day and enjoy every day.” They met at an Oakleigh Bowling Club dance and were married in 1962, raising three children, Karen, Paul and Fiona.
“We are blessed that we’ve got each other and that we live in such a beautiful area – yes we’re very blessed. We love each other and support each other because we’ve grown together really,” Dianna said.

“I think it’s because of this camaraderie support and help each other... anyone needs help we support and it’s just terrific. Got to know each other,” Diana said. Diamonds are precious, valuable and form after years of pressure, which is a testament to the happy couple who’ve reached the milestone.Jim said the secret to having a long and happy marriage is patience with a small laugh.
“We were in everything... even though we had our individual activities, we support each other. You can’t do anything on your own,” Jim said. The pair are very grateful to have reached their 60th Anniversary and to celebrate it in the place they love, the Yarra Valley.
Jim and Diana have had many highlights during their marriage, while standing together through life’s ups and downs and following where life lead them. For Jim this meant a lot of places, as he worked in senior roles with Melbourne Water, including as Water Supply Head Works and Distribution Manager, which meant the family relocated to towns across Melbourne and Vic toria, including Warburton. As they moved, Diana’s career in education was always in demand as local schools were in need of a new teacher. This includes teaching at the Badger Creek Primary School after moving to the region, before working as the music teacher at the formerly named Croydon West School.In1985, the family settled in theYarraValley in Tarrawarra on Old Healesville Road, somewhere many locals may have fond memories of after they opened a vineyard and cellar door called the Yarra Track in the 1990s. The pair supported local tourism and launched the pivotal Yarra Valley Small Wineries Group and began The Shortest Lunch, and both still remain today.
The 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires sadly swept through their property, as they lost everything but their home. The cattle yards and vineyard took the biggest hit, losing all of their stock and acres of vines to the ferocious blaze. After this, Diana was active in instigating a ‘Bushfire Guard’ and Women’s and Mixed gatherings groups to support one another after the Thisdevastation.issomething the pair continue to drive today, as everyone comes together in times of need and as a community.

Performer and ECOSS member Woody Clark said all the performers were local. “They’ll each be doing a little half hour set, finishing with Jayda and I’m also hoping to do a soul circle, where the four of them are onstage with guitars and do a cover song which speaks to them,” he said.

If the past two years hadn’t been so difficult and life changing then we might be able to more easily sit and have a laugh about some of the strange changes and new ways we operate in our new Covid impacted world. Bruce Argyle recently competed in the Area Toastmaster Speech Competition, winning with his speech entitled ‘Competing with Covid’. Bruce gave the zoom audience many reasons to smile and laugh during his 7 minute speech as he proposed the establishment of the Covid Olympics.This“pun-ishing” presentation started with the ‘germ of an idea’ that proved particularly contagious, going totally viral on Facebook and jabber! Covid competition events ranged from the optional ‘shot’ put, through to 5k radius circle event to no touch rugby and the masked covid marathon (long covid).Itculminated in the invitation to enter local and regional competitions hosted by the IOCC (sic. International Oversight of Covid Committee) through their local IGA (‘Infectious Germs Administration’) which would see competitors having to empty the aisle of toilet paper upon utterance of the word ‘lockdown’.Bruce’s speech formed part of the Humorous Speech Pathway, one of the many options available to members of Toastmasters and was not the first time he had put his toe in the water, having joined with other members of Healesville Toastmasters to host a Melbourne International Comedy Festival event at Memo Hall in successive years. The content for these shows was taken from a series of ‘A Strange Business’ programs featured on Yarra Valley FM 99.1 over the past couple of years. Twenty of these ‘pun-filled’ scripts are combined in a publication available in the next 3 months. In a John Clarke and Richard Dawes dialogue style, these programs are centred around the strangest of occupations and filled with puns and clever word usage. Perhaps it is time for all of us to take life a little less seriously, laugh at ourselves and our circumstances much more and to put a smile on the faces of those we interact with on a daily basis. Your local toastmasters club can be a great starting point if you would like to develop your confidence in speaking, grow your word knowledge and your leadership skills. Why not adopt a new pathway that ensures you will be having some fun, as well as learning some skills at the same time.
From 4pm to 5pm, Francesca Ronalds gave an Italian cooking demonstration during the market, while Chris Morants gives a roaming children’s performance, free of charge. From 5pm, a youth music showcase featuring Jayda Jean Music, Gaia Music, Miri Hope and Follow the Robin Music with digital art projection by Jagielski Designs was performed.
By Callum Ludwig Yarra Valley ECOSS is getting busy heading out of winter and into springtime, starting with an exciting edition of their Festive Market held lastOnweek.Friday 19 August, the sixth ECOSS Festive Market brought together an exciting fourpronged female youth artist showcase and an exploration of Italian Culture. Executive Officer Chelsea McNab said they’ve gathered some amazing young talents from the Yarra Valley. “We were really lucky to get some funding both from Creative Victoria and VicHealth so every third Friday of the month during the market, we’re going to offer a different multi cultural food tasting alongside a performance of that culture, with this Friday being Italian,” she“It’ssaid.about engaging kids in healthy eating and exploring multiculturalism and giving people, mainly kids, an experience of different cultures.”

Mr Clark is the father of Jayda Jean, and they recently held a successful crowdfunding campaign to support the release of Jayda’s debut EP. They have raised $4770 to date, and Jayda will be previewing some of her new music at the showcase.

Kangaroo hops up to her heart check
Kangaroo Island Kangaroo Merle heart check with Healesville Sanctuary vet Megan Curnick. Picture: ZOOS VICTORIA
Bruce Argyle recently competed in the Area Toastmaster SpeechPicture:Competition.SUPPLIED Staying calm is the key to undergoing an accu rate heart check, which is particularly impor tant for one of Healesville Sanctuary’s resident Kangaroos.Eight-year-old Merle has a heart murmur that requires regular monitoring. Usually this would involve an anaesthetic, however her keepers and vet team have spent months working with Merle so that she now hops up to them and calmly allows a stethoscope to be placed on her chest. Merle is offered peanut butter as a reward when she approaches her keeper and vet. Sanctuary Veterinarian Meg Curnick said it is important that Merle has complete choice and control over monitoring her health. “She can choose not to come over, or to move away,” Dr Curnick said.“This means that she is calm and comfortable with the proce dure at all stages, which is particularly impor tant when evaluating the heart. “Merle’s heart murmur is very minor and doesn’t seem to be causing any clinical prob lems. However, these things can worsen over time, so monthly checks allow us to hear if the murmur is becoming louder, thereby letting us know when it is time for further treatment.”
Mr Clark said he was really excited to see them“I’veplay.been looking at their showreels and their music and they are really talented, I want everyone to hear them and see what they can put together for this concert,” he said. “They’ve been starved of opportunity the last couple of years, so to have a local opportunity to perform in front of an appreciative audience feels really meaningful.”
Follow The Robin (aka Stephanie) weaves stories, poetry and metaphorical images into her folk-style-influenced songs while Gaia draws on the genres of pop, rock, indie and folk and adores storytelling.
Heart murmurs occur when the flow of blood through the heart is unusually turbu lent. There can be several causes, but the most likely is a valve in the heart is not closing prop erly. While this healthcare training may look easy, it has been refined over many months, and requires great two-way communication throughout the entire process. Keepers watch closely to ensure the Kangaroo has a comfort able body position that avoids leaning, only then does the examination begin. Training experts at Healesville Sanctuary are continually exploring voluntary health check possibilities across a variety of species.

Zoos Victoria and Healesville Sanctuary visitors are reminded that all tickets must be pre-booked online at zoo.org.au. ZoosVictoria Members no longer need to book but are required to scan their Membership card at entry.

Wandin intimidated Olinda-Ferny Creek at home in their comfortable win. Picture: ON FILE
The final game of the 2022 home and away season saw a red-hot Wandin side hosting Olinda in the hostile environment of their Clegg Rd home. Although the result would have no influence on ladder position for the finals, the Bloods and the Dogs had planned for an intense contest against a fellow finals contender on a compact ground. Wandin’s midfielders jumped out of the gates early, quickly exposing some lacklustre defensive effort and accountability from their Olinda opposition who could not get their hands on the footy. Defenders, under immediate pressure, were caught out on multiple occasions as Wandin notched early goals and established a commanding lead. With their forwards forced to help high up the ground, Olinda was unable to create any contests inside 50. Any forward entries simply ended up in open space and were quickly rebounded by Bulldog defenders. Tom Millwood was able to dribble through a late major for Olinda, but Wandin had a commanding 7-goal lead entering the first break. “The 7-goal first term set the game up for Wandin, and other than a 15 minute burst in the second quarter, they were never really challenged,” said Wandin Senior Coach Nick Adam.Needing to respond, the Bloods lifted their intensity for the second quarter. The defensive midfield effort improved, halting Wandin’s clearance dominance. The Olinda forwards were able to get their hands on the ball in more damaging positions. Although Olinda was playing with more intent, the Dogs responded with their own gameplay, matching the territory battle through sheer will at the contest. Despite being tasked with a more accountable role, former Collingwood Magpie Matt Scharenberg was still finding ways to intercept and launch Olinda’s attacks. Pete Lucas toiled hard in the heat of battle. With majors to Jonty Scott, Josh Wallis and Lachy Taylor, Olinda was able to bring the margin back to 37 points at halftime. Olinda displayed some intermittent attack on the footy in the third quarter but Wandin continued to dominate with skill and ruthless intent all around the ground. Making the most of limited opportunities, the Bloods were able to capitalise on three forward entries with goals to tall forwards: Taylor, Wallis and Seymour. But Wandin showed no sign of releasing the pressure and had extended their lead to an 8-goal margin at the finalThebreak.three-quarter time emphasis for Olinda was honesty and pride. Down back, Dale Rohrmann was handling his matchup under intense pressure while Dan Toma was accountable. Percy Hyett was typically competitive in his forward 50 attack. Seymour and Scott managed to finish off some positive passages of play, adding two goals to the score line. But all in all, it was a disappointing day for Olinda which couldn’t match Wandin’s hardness, skill and intent. Going down 122-65 in the final round, there’s plenty to ponder going into the finals. Patty Bruzzese, Chayce Black, Daniel Hirst, Todd Garner, Thomas Leech-Hines and Matthew Cerquarelli were the best for the Dogs in the win. Goalkickers were Clinton Johnson with 3, Black, Cerquarelli, Garner, Hirst and Patrick Hodgett with2 and Bruzzese, Tom Merlino and Harrison Van Duuren with one each.
“An even spread of goalkickers would’ve been pleasing but some inaccurate goalkicking meant that Wandin never really put the game completely away,” said Mr Adam. The Dogs face local rivals Woori Yallock next weekend in a qualifying final clash.

SPORT Pursuit to finals victory
Fast-firing Wandin set up strong win in last home game
By Alex Woods
For the first time since 2006, the whole club has been in finals. Saturday was a proud day for the Warburton-Millgrove Football Netball Club, couldn’t be more excited. There were 6 games, 4 at Healesville and 2 at Woori Yallock. 3 Milestones this weekend, Courtney Irwin and Brooke de Pedro both played their 150th game and Kirralee Luiyf plays her 50th game. Highs and lows this weekend but unfortunate ly sport can be cruel at times, but everyone will recover and work hard for the next.
D Grade had the week off and play for the Grand Final spot next weekend. Under 17’s netball kicked off the morning at Healesville taking on Powelltown. Powelltown finished 1 spot above them on the ladder. The teams had met 5 times throughout the year with 3 wins to Powelltown and 2 to WarburtonMillgrove. It was set to be a tough match. The game started Powelltown’s way with a score of 6-3 at the quarter-time break. A few minor er rors, finals time nerves and replacement of fresh legs, the team managed to keep Powell town to shoot 1 goal in the second quarter and 9 goals for themselves, giving a halftime score of 7-12. The team found their momentum and put together their fitness, attacking skills and defensive effort to have an 8-goal lead heading into the last term. No backing off now, elimina tion finals are scary, and anything can change. But, the team didn’t lose confidence, kept their calm and managed to secure a win from one of the best team effort games to date. The final score was 16-22 and the 17’s will take on Broad ford in the preliminary final next Sunday. Awe some efforts from Lucas Rush, Hannah Darwall and Tayah Humphrey, with Tayah putting up 15 goals and Tahlia Thornton with 7. C Grade was next to play for a spot in the Grand Finals. Also taking on Powelltown, C Grade finished the season undefeated but the pedal doesn’t come off now. They started off strong with a 16-1 lead at the first break. The momentum was good, the ball was flowing nicely and the goals were sinking in. The half time score was 27-7, still half to go but the girls didn’t look like slowing down. The final score was 53-21 and they had earned a place into the Grand Final! A week off to work hard and the big game will occur in 2 weeks’ time. Congratulations all! Top performers were Courtney Irwin for her 150th game, Melanie Hancock and Bianca Fraser. Mel Hancock had a ripper putting up 27 goals, Emily Hay with 20 and Brooke de Pedro for her 150th also secured 6 goals to the team Reserveswin.were the first football match for the day and had a tough match-up against Kinglake for a Grand Final spot. Taking on Kinglake just the week before, they managed to secure their undefeated 2022 run with a win by just 18 points. The game started well, Healesville is a bigger ground than normal, but the team managed to get a 2.3-15 to 0.1-1 lead by the first break. The flow kept going nice into the second quarter and only let Kinglake kick 1 goal for themselves in the first half. The Reserves were 7.11-53 to Kinglake 2.2-14 at threequarter time but needed to push through right to the final siren to secure that Grand Final spot. The Reserves kept Kinglake scoreless in the last quarter of footy and secured another goal for themselves. The final score was 7.18-60 to Kinglake 2.2-14.With sharing goal-kicking efforts, Damien Egan, Noah Erickson, Brayden Ferguson, Scott Muir, Josh Read, Ash Taylor and Lee Weir all secured 1 goal each for the team’s win. The best players were Marcel Kocher, Matthew Godenzi, Tyson Henry, Josh Sharp and Brayden Ferguson. So far, 2 grand final spots secured and 1 prelim, the day was going well. A Grade was up next with a tough match against Powelltown. The girls knew it was going to be a physical battle throughout, but were determined to get the Grand Final spot. The girls came out strong with a 14-8 lead at the first break. The intensity was strong and they managed a 26-15 lead by halftime. The Burras finished off strong securing a Grand Final spot with a final score of 43-26, Shae Gee put up 30 goals out of Gabrielle Woods, Morgan Wyatt and Shae Gee. Now it was over to Woori Yallock as B Grade and Seniors play their Elimination finals. B Grade took the court against Alexandra. B Grade has won all times they have met, the first time by 2 goals, then by 7 the second meeting, and by 8 goals last time they met. Good start by the girls in the first quarter with a score of 18-7 by the first break. They managed to hold on and kept their team effort throughout securing a prelim spot next weekend with a 54-31 end result. Chelsea Barnard, Alexandra Woods and Sally McIntosh were awarded best on for this match with Alexandra Woods shooting 24 goals, Jordana Butcher with 23 goals and Ella Meerkotter with 7. Next week the girls take on Broadford for a spot in the Grand Final. The Senior boys finished off the first round of finals by taking onYarra Junction in an Elimination. This was going to be a hard match. 2 wins toYarra Junction and 1 win toWarburtonMillgrove, it could go anyone’s way. The boys started strong kicking 3.5 toYarra Junction’s 2.4 but the first break. Unfortunately, they managed to kick 5 goals in the second quarter to our 2, which gave them a lead of 12 at the half time break. The boys had a tough job in the second half, it was important to not let the nerves get the better of them having not played finals for a few years. They got back into the game and secured 4 goals to Yarra Junction’s 2 in the 3rd quarter, only being 1 point down at the last break. The last quarter had to be physical and implement all the skills and tactics they had obtained throughout the season. Unfortunately, Yarra Junction secured 5 goals in the last quarter to WarburtonMillgrove’s 1.3 giving them a confident lead. The Burras were able to apply defensive pressure and use their attacking skills but weren’t able to convert it and reward themselves for the efforts. The game resulted in 14.10-94 to 10.10-70 Yarra Junctions way, progressing them on in the finals, meaning the season has ended for the Burra boys. The progression the senior boys, as well as the whole club, have made over the last couple of years is amazing, and the whole club couldn’t be more proud. Upsetting and devastating they were not able to get the reward for the hard work they put in, the boys should hold their heads up high for the attitudes, and efforts they show throughout. The future of our club is very bright with the numbers being produced and the kids coming through the ranks. Hard work into next year to be even better. Well done everyone. As a result of yesterday’s finals, WarburtonMillgrove have secured 3 grand finals spots and 3 preliminary spots. The next 2 weeks are looking exciting for the club. Go Burras!

Netball In A grade netball, Yarra Glen faced a spirited Berwick Springs in windy conditions and had to battle for a 4-goal lead at quarter time. As they settled into the contest, the girls extended their lead in each quarter to run out clear winners, 45 to 30. The win guarantees A grade a finals berth with 2 games to play. Best forYarra Glen were KatelynVanderkolk, Lara Wandin Collins and Kayla Collins.
Berwick Springs and Gembrook-Cockatoo before a bye in the final round to close out the 2022 season. Mr Erickson said even though they may not have won as many games as they would’ve liked, it’s still been a pretty successful “It’syear.given us a bit of a learning curve of what moving up a division is about and what you need. I think that’s been really good for us to get that under our belt and not finish on the bottom of the ladder or get relegated straight back down because that helps nobody,” he said. “We have huge injury issues this year, particularly with probably our top 10 players and our captain out for eight or nine weeks at the start of the season which is a huge loss. Probably only twice this year we’ve had our best list out on the park.”
Yarra Glen open up search for new 2023 football coach
By Callum Ludwig
“To try to get kids back to the club is always top of our list, the players who came back to us this year played a lot of senior games, which is great,” he said. “Having those players around, it’s more personal for them playing for their home club, they’re passionate about it, want to see the club succeed and take a lot of ownership of it.”Remuneration for the Senior coach will depend on previous experience and qualifications.Allapplications can be sent to yarraglenfnc@gmail.com or call PresidentVinny Erickson at 0431 680 990 or Footy Manager Richard Gurney at 0431 326 715. By David Ball Football Yarra Glen travelled to a windswept Mick Mo reland Reserve to take on third-placed Ber wick Springs. Kicking with the aid of a strong wind the Titans were able to launch long into their forward line from a dominant half-back line. Yarra Glen’s defenders and midfield were heaping plenty of pressure on Berwick Springs, forcing a number of rushed behinds and er rant kicks at goal. The Titans also missed a few gettable set shots and ended up a wasteful 3.10 at quarter time to Yarra Glen’s 1.1. The second quarter saw the River Pigs increase their intensity and dominated general play, adding 3.1 to Berwick Springs 2 points to reduce the margin to just 4 points at halftime. Callum Morison was marking strongly across half forward and only some desperate defend ing from the Titans kept Yarra Glen from con verting more of their opportunities. Yarra Glen was all over Berwick Springs in the third quarter. They controlled play, win ning the contested ball and spreading to set up many forward moves. Despite having the wind advantage, the Titans could only add 1 goal whilst Yarra Glen missed some set shot oppor tunities to add 3 points. Only 8 points down at the last break, the scene was set for a major up set.As the wind died Berwick Springs were able to convert up forward to add 3 goals in a short burst, Matt Collett marking strongly contribut ing 2 of those.WhilstYarra Glen kept attacking, kicking another 2 goals, Berwick Springs lifted their intensity and ended up 14-point winners.
Close game for River Pigs
Final score Yarra Glen 6.8 v Berwick Springs 7.16Best for Yarra Glen were Sam Wood (1 goal) Sam Horsley, Callum Morison, (3 goals) Blake Binion, Jarrod Hull and Richard Wyles. Jayden Schille was the other goalkicker with 2. The Yarra Glen reserves were once again short on manpower compounded by last-min ute replacements needed for the seniors. Fac ing the top side they struggled from the start. Despite kicking with the wind in the first quar ter they were outscored to be 23 points down at quarter time. The River Pigs fought hard early in the second but were run over late in the quarter as the Titans banged in quick goals to be 61 points up at halftime.Withinjuries and a depleted bench things only got worse and despite their best efforts they were soundly beaten by a very strong and even opposition. Final scores,Yarra Glen 2.3 to Berwick Springs 22.18.
In B Grade Yarra Glen got off to a fast start, leading 19 to 6 at quarter time. In the second Berwick Springs lifted and matched it with Yarra Glen in a goal for goal battle. In the second half, the Yarra girls got back to playing their best netball and ran out easy winners, 50 to 24.Best for Yarra Glen were Kim Williams, Meaghan Carter and Ellen Brown. C Grade was looking for back-to-back victories but met some stiff opposition as Berwick Springs kept within 4 goals at the first break. The Yarra girls improved their ball control as they became accustomed to the windy conditions. They outscored their opponents in each of the remaining quarters to run out 12 goals up at the end, winning 44 to 32. Best forYarra Glen were Ashley Shanks, Alex Bray and Kali Fraser. In D grade Berwick Springs started strongly, taking a 5-goal lead over Yarra Glen by quarter time. By halftime, Yarra Glen was 10 goals down, with the taller Berwick Springs Goal Attack proving to be a handful for the undersized Yarra Glen defenders. Some changes at halftime helped Yarra Glen to balance up the contest, but Berwick Springs were too good in the end, with final scores Yarra Glen 21 to Berwick Springs 36. Best for Yarra Glen were Chantelle Farley, Ellie Symes and Kim Christian. Next week Yarra Glen plays Gembrook at home and then travels to Berwick the following week for the last game before finals.

A Seniors coach is not the only position available, with availabilities for the Reserves, Under 19s and Under 17s positions too as the club decides to reset and rejuvenate ahead of the 2023 season. Best for Yarra Glen were great efforts from Alec Peterson, Brendan Davis, Dayne Downward, Brendan Davis, LukeVanderstadt, Heath Chamberlain and Patty Tucker. Next week the footballers take on Gembrook at home in their last game for the season.
President Vinny Erickson said it was time to put a line through the sand and make a fresh“Westart.left the decision up to Wayne as to when he left, as he was committed to staying out the season. Then we had the win against Belgrave and he said ‘Vinny, this is it’ and I said, ‘Well, it’s perfect timing to go out with the win.’,” he said. “He’s been really good to the club and taught the boys a lot, his commitment to the club was second to none. Any coach who took up a job at a club after Covid had a pretty tough gig.”

“Our club rooms were redeveloped fairly early on in the council’s redevelopment program. There’s a lot of clubs out there that don’t have those facilities and it would be better to haveMonbulksome.”
“It’s been resolved slowly over time, but a lot of clubs don’t have specific changing facilities for girls and women’s sport,” he said.
The State Basketball Centre opened in 2012 and cost $27 million to build. It is located at the Knox Regional Sports Park, 291 George Street Wantirna South.
The State Government’s Fair Access Policy Roadmap was developed to create a state-wide foundation to improve access and use of com munity sports facilities for women and girls.
Knox Mayor Susan Laukens said the project was the council’s biggest ever investment in sporting facilities.

Mr Varmalis said Yarra Ranges Council looks forward to working with the state government to continue this important work. “Yarra Ranges Council has also partnered with Knox and Maroondah Councils, along with local health providers Inspiro and Each, to launch Our Codes, Our Clubs: Equality is the game, a resource to help clubs provide gender equitable environments,” Mr Varmelis said.

Saturday 20 August, PAR: With all the field hitting off at 9.30am for a Shot gun start, there were bound to be some really healthy scores discussed in the Clubrooms af terwards, even with the continued heavy con ditions and inclement weather. The golfer get ting the most pats on his back was none other than Clint Toohey, a regular winner, but one who ‘hasn’t greeted the judge’ for a while now! But, his healthy +3 was enough to grab the main prize. Good work, Clint! Craig Staggard had to settlefortherunner-upvoucherbutwouldhave still been pleased with his +2. Balls extended to -1. NTPs were won by Clint Toohey (3rd), Peter Fox (5th), Steuart Hawke (9th), Junior Kempton (12th) and Tim Blanche (15th).
The centre is home to the Knox Raiders, who compete in the NBL1 South. The stadium also houses the offices of Basketball Australia, Basketball Victoria, the Melbourne Boomers WNBL team, South East Melbourne Phoenix NBL team and Knox Basketball Incorporated. It currently seats 3,200 people on the show court and has six other courts that can also host netball games. The upgrade is being jointly funded through $27 million from Knox City Council and $105 million from the state government.

Wednesday 17 August, Stableford: Ok, we’re back, ( from up north!) And, the course is still quite heavy, making good scoring difficult! One who did score well on this day was Ross Ferguson, amassing a creditable total of 36 points. This score was enough to edge out Neil Leckenby, who had to be content with the runner-up voucher. But Neil’s 35 points was a positive indication of his form for the upcom ing Master’s Pennant season, a solid boost for the mighty Warbie Gold squad! Balls crept all the way down to 31. The 4 NTP winners on the day were as follows Ray “Happy” Gilmore (3rd), Ron Wilson (5th), Darryl Ward (9th) and Steuart Hawke (15th). Steuart is another mem ber of the Warbie Gold squad, so the season is looking very bright indeed!
By Parker McKenzie Yarra Ranges Council has welcomed the Victo rian State Government’s new Fair Access Policy Roadmap, which will require local councils to ensure equitable access to sporting facilities for people of all genders to continue receiving infrastructure funding from July 2024. Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence announced the three-phase initiative along side representatives from state sporting organ isations and local government and Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins. “The Fair Access Policy Roadmap will deliver greater health outcomes for all Victorians, a stronger community sport and recreation sec tor, and fairer use of public sporting assets.” Ms Spence said.

“Basketball is huge in Victoria, and we’re investing so more people can enjoy taking part in the sport they love, our top teams can train and be their best, and local sports have top-class facilities.” He said. The steel skeleton being installed was made using steel manufactured in Victo ria, with 90 per cent of the project being made with local materials and 10 per cent of the total estimated work hours being delivered by apprentices, trainees and ca dets according to the state government.
Minister for Industry Support and Recovery Ben Carroll said they are putting local jobs first throughout the upgrade.
“This landmark policy will ensure all Victorian women can fully participate in and enjoy the benefits of community sport, with fair op portunity and access to their local facilities.” Ms Hutchins said.
“Knox Basketball has nearly 1000 teams competing every week and is one of the largest basketball associations in Australia,” she said. “Knox Gymnastics often has waiting lists for young people and their families. This new home will be purpose-built for them and will allow more local children and adults to take part in gymnastics.”
The first phase of the initiative will see the Office for Women in Sport and Recreation provide training, education and support to local councils, sporting bodies and facilities to implement the roadmap. Office for Women in Sport and Recreation Director Sarah Styles said the landmark policy will ensure community sporting environments are welcoming, accessible and inclusive for everyone.“We’re looking forward to working with all stakeholders, wherever they are on their journey,” she said. The second phase will require local councils to develop equitable access and use policy and action plans, with stage three seeing local councils lose access to infrastructure funding if they don’t guarantee equitable access.
Yarra Ranges Council Environment and Infrastructure Director Mark Varmalis said the council is committed to improving opportunities for gender-diverse participation in sport and recreation across the LGA. “Over the past few years, council has invested significantly in new sporting infrastructure to support the growth of participation of women and girls,” he said. “This has included seven new pavilions, nine temporary change facilities and lighting upgrades to 12 ovals. This has resulted in a 68 per cent increase in female football participation, with over 1300 female players now regularly using these facilities.”
Soccer Club SeniorWomen’s team coach Aaron Jones said the club has excellent facilities for women, but not everyone in the community knows they can access them.

By Parker McKenzie Installation of a 1250-tonne structural steel “skeleton” at the Knox State Basketball Centre has begun, a milestone in the $132 million upgrade to the facility. Bayswater MP Jackson Taylor said he was proud to see the home of basketball being built in Knox.
“Basketball is huge in Victoria, and we’re investing so more people can enjoy taking part in the sport they love, our top teams can train and be their best, and local sports have top-class facilities.”
“Not just in this area but inVictoria, I would say there are some limitations in terms of facilities,” he said. “There is access for the general community to use as well. We’ve got to try and use facilities like these, have it open to the public so that more people are aware that they’re there.”
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos said the government is supporting “the next generation of sporting champions and the communities behind them, ensure Victorian have access to first-class sporting facilities across the state.”
“We know how important it is to supportVictorian businesses to win work on the major projects we are delivering for communities across Victoria,” he said.
“The amazing facilities will support thousands of locals to dream big and get involved and the state-of-the-art centre will welcome nearly two million visitors annually, who’ll also be able to enjoy a new town square space,” he said.
Olinda-Ferny Creek Football Netball Club President Simon Gilson, who also coaches the women’s football team, said while he isn’t across the changes yet he believes on principle it will be good for women’s sport.
