“Whilst you shouldn’t be rewarded for being a law abiding and hardworking citizen, it’s not easy for people with a history of drug use and criminal offending to change their lives in the way that you have.” Cashen was sentenced to a three-year CCO, including 350 hours of unpaid work as well as drug and mental health treatment and a roadtrauma awareness program.

“No matter what role I have been offered in the cast or the friendships I have made, the most enjoyable part of the VSSS every year is feeling the adrenaline of being on that stage in front of thousands of people and being able to put a smile on each of their faces,” she said.

A year before the crash, he’d pleaded guilty to reckless conduct endangering serious injury, while trying to evade a police pursuit. He’d also been to court five times for further offending since the crash, including three jail terms in 2018 and 2019. Cashen had also previously breached two community corrections orders and a drug treatment order. Judge Ellis however noted Cashen’s “marked” improvement since being last released from jail. By Marcus Uhe Residents are appalled at the presentation of Casey’s community spaces. Casey was plagued by issues of long grass in their parks and recreation reserves following storms in late 2021, compounded by staffing and equipment issues with their contractor.

The council has ranked substantially lower than the state average - 59 compared to 71 - for the appearance of public areas in the annual Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey, in results publicised by the shire on Wednesday 17 August. More than 5000 customer requests for storm and tree-related assistance were lodged between October and December 2021, and in an update provided on Tuesday 12 April, the council said there was more than 1600 out standing requests from jobs received between October 2021 and January 2022. Other areas in which Casey was ranked below the state average were value for money, overall performance, community decisions, lobbying, and consultation and engagement.

Designs finalised for new train station

The State Government is one step closer to removing level crossings along the Pakenham Line, with final designs released for Webb Street and a brand-new Narre Warren Station. The 875m elevated rail bridge will remove the level crossing and increase safety, ease congestion and allow more trains – changing the way people move around in the southeast for years to come, the government said. Around 13,200 vehicles use the Webb Street level crossing each day, with the boom gates down for up to 40 minutes during the morning peak when up to 25 trains pass through. With the Metro Tunnel opening in 2025 meaning more trains, more often, the boom gates would be down for significant periods throughout the day if not removed, the gov ernment said. Since 2012, there have been at least 19 near misses recorded at the level crossing. Community feedback has helped shape the project, which will deliver better accessibility and facilities for the new Narre Warren Station and forecourt, the government said.

Designs for the new Narre Warren Station have been announced.

A set of revelations claim secret surveys were conducted in Narre Warren and Ballarat dur ing the 2020 lockdown to gauge the public’s sentiments regarding restrictions. According to The Australian, the Victorian Government reportedly held focus groups and surveyed locals in late September 2020 when they were deciding whether to lift Covid re strictions following the state’s second wave of the virus. The groups were reportedly asked about their views on several lockdown measures, including gathering rules, a ban on visitors to homes, the 5km movement radius, and 8pm curfew, said news.com.au.

The north-facing electronic sign was to feature 30-second static advertisements without animation or moving images. It would be displayed to 30,000 southbound vehicles a day, including cars merging from the Princes Highway on-ramp about 150 metres from the sign. The office for the Head of Transport Victoria (HTV) objected to the plan due to “particular concentration” being required at the merge, Mr Sibonis noted.

“By their nature, and to be effective, advertising signs are intended to attract attention.“Itwill be clearly visible to drivers in both the through-lane on the freeway and to those seeking to merge. “A distraction should not be introduced here. To do so, in my opinion, would be to create a safety hazard.”

One question asked those surveyed their “initial reaction/top of mind discussion following recent announcements”, news.com.au reported.Itisbelieved that, in addition to expert health advice, the surveys may have guided the government on which restrictions to ease once Covid cases lessened. The Premier’s Office was contacted for comment.

Shared pedestrian and cycle paths will connect the station to Narre Warren village, and a signalised pedestrian crossing will be installed on Webb Street to create better connections in theTransportarea. Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the Pakenham line would be levelcrossing free by 2025.

Upgrades include elevated platforms with access via lifts and stairs, seating and improved lighting, and a secure Parkiteer bicycle cage, bicycle hoops and landscaping.

The new station design highlights the history of the area and features a wave-shaped exterior surrounding the central staircases, while new bus bays on Webb Street will be longer and wider to ensure traffic isn’t blocked.

aPromotion‘hazard’

A proposed major electronic advertising sign near merge lanes on the South Gippsland Freeway in Hallam has been refused as an “unacceptable safety hazard”.Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal senior member Bill Sibonis on 29 July rejected plans for two 42-square metre signs on a pole in a V formation facing north and south-bound traffic.

“We’re getting rid of this dangerous and congested level crossing at Webb Street and we’ll delivering a state-of-the-art, modern station for the entire community to enjoy for years to come,” she said.

Surveys guided decisions on restrictions

The proposal had been appealed to VCAT after being initially refused by City of Casey.

Revelations published by The Australian claim the Andrews Government conducted surveys with communities to help determine the fate of Covid restrictions in 2020. 253700

The HTV submitted “this is not the time to be distracted by an abrupt change in luminance that can occur when an electronic major promotion sign replaces one advertisement with another”.“Evena momentary distraction could cause a driver to miss a critical observation in such circumstances.”

“There’s a lot to do always but I do feel positive about a lot’s that being done.”

By Marcus Uhe Health-promoting charity Enliven is partnering with Victoria University to conduct a Climate and Health Survey with a specific focus on Melbourne’s South East. The survey seeks to understand the range of knowledge in the Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia communities about the links between climate change and human health, and in contrast, which groups have the most limited knowledge, and what are the barriers to those residents taking action. Responses well help local organisations plan and better respond to the health impacts of climate change.

SECCCA is also seeking a net-zero emissions target by 2040, and a 67 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 to curtail global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“Local government is best-placed to help our communities address climate change, while building resilience and preparing for future impacts,“ Cr Whelan said.

Last week, Caldermeade and Lang Lang experienced flooding which saw the closure of the South Gippsland Highway, while suburbs in the north of Cardinia including Gembrook and Emerald battled persistent storm damage last year as wild weather saw trees fall and houses damaged on multiple occasions. The City of Greater Dandenong launched an Urban Forest Strategy with a goal to increase tree canopy coverage in the municipality by six per cent by 2028.

The council said 73 per cent of land in Greater Dandenong is privately owned with low canopy cover, which combined with a disadvantaged population and high temperatures, leads to suburbs within the municipality being classified as ‘highly vulnerable’ to urban heat and climate change impacts.

“Climate change is becoming more prevalent in priority focus of these teams and climate change health impacts are embedded into council health wellbeing plans.

Through the South East Councils Climate Change Awareness, the City of Casey is working with other local government areas in the region to understand the impacts of climate change and how to best prepare for them, such as a rainfall decrease, fire risks and rising

Understanding what they value is key. “We’re hoping to create a communications toolkit for local government areas and stakeholders to produce evidence-informed communications around climate change.”

Climate knowledge survey with a focus on South East

“Action on climate change is front of mind for residents living in the SECCCA region; the community is asking us to take action locally as well as nationally but we can’t do this alone” SECCCA chair and Bass Coast Shire mayor Michael Whelan said at the policy launch on 24 August.“Our priorities are aimed at supporting low carbon (electric vehicle) and active transport, creating greener, cooler and more liveable cities and helping our communities adapt to climate change.

In its 2022 policy platform, the South East Councils Climate Change Alliance has called for $70 million funding of regional projects such as a $20 million network of electric vehi cle charging stations. The alliance also calls for $20 million toward ‘active transport’ such as walking and cy cling, $20 million for a gas-transition fund and $10 million to support climate-change adap tion projects in the South East. Top areas of concern in Casey and Cardinia include bushfires, drought, extreme tempera tures and loss of biodiversity and habitat. Planetary Health Project Officer at Enliven, Georgia Langmaid said they are hoping to bring climate and human health to the forefront of health promotions.

According to Ms Langmaid, environmental and geographical factors make residents in the South East particularly at-risk to climate change problems.

Maas speaks out on landfill

After remaining tight-lipped on the situation for several weeks, Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas has taken to Facebook with his first statement regarding the Draft Hampton Park Hill Development Plan. In a Facebook post on 18 August, Mr Maas announced he had met with Environment minister Lily D’Ambrosio to discuss the environmental concerns of the community.

The graduation event was also attended by South Eastern Metropolitan MP Lee Tarlamis.

Sergeant Paul Holtzinger from the Dandenong High Risk Driving Unit said there were more appropriate and safer ways to announce the sex of a child. “If you’re celebrating an impending birth and want to reveal the gender of your child, pop a balloon or cut a cake,” Sgt Holtzinger said.“Don’t tear up our roads and recklessly put your family and friends in danger of serious injury or death.

“At community meeting with Casey Residents who have real concerns about Hampton Park Landfill. There are hundreds from the community, and ZERO from @VictorianLabor to answer concerns. Maybe they can’t stand the smell from the tip so failed to turn up,“ one of the tweets read. Despite his absence from the meeting, Mr Maas assisted community members in requesting Casey Council extend the deadline for submissions into the draft development plan, residents say. City of Casey subsequently extended the submission period for an additional two weeks, giving residents a total of six weeks to voice their concerns. Last week City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff revealed the council had received more than 1000 submissions. Council officers will now review the submissions and decide whether to make changes to the draft development plan.

Mr Maas acknowledged the draft plan was “top of mind for many locals”. “The Minister has written formally to council to ask them to take the time to ensure every interested member of the community has an opportunity to give their feedback on this plan, and to ensure any decision is made after giving full consideration to those views and concerns,” he said. Mr Maas was previously criticised by Berwick Liberal candidate and current Gembrook MP Brad Battin for his absence at the Lynbrook Residents Association’s public meeting, in which stakeholders including 120 residents, City of Casey representatives and Narre Warren South Liberal candidate Annette Samuel attended to discuss concerns over the plan. Mr Battin took to twitter criticising the lack of Labor presence at the meeting and questioning certain clauses of the submission plan.

Unlike the performance in 2019, females will be involved this year, with eight of the ten from Hallam being females. “It is very empowering as well for our young female students to be involved in that. “A lot of them saw the Haka two years ago that our boys did and wanted to be involved in it the following year and some are very angry now that the girls can do it because they missedAlongsideout!” the Haka performers, the event will feature a performance by the Pasefika Choir, a group made up of 40 Pacific Islander students from schools including Cranbourne West Secondary College, Narre Warren South P-12 College, Monterey Secondary College, Lyndhurst Secondary College and Hampton Park Secondary College. Head of instrumental music at Cranbourne West Secondary College, Shane Chidgey said the Pasefika Choir had been great for students and school staff.

Spectacular students take part in annual perfomance

“It’s been great because the students really take ownership over it. We just facilitate it but the kids steer the direction,” he said. “It’s great to give them the opportunity to even just being able to wear cultural dress, they just love it and take that pride in being able to demonstrate that.”

For Ashley, who is in her final year at Narre Warren South P-12 College, the spectacular is familiar“Everyterritory.yearhas offered me something really special. My first year was amazing because I was only 8 years old and in the VSSS Choir,” Ashley recalled. “When I was offered a principal role for the first time, I was so proud of myself, but being a principal vocalist and principal dancer in the one show is just amazing. “I love the professionalism of the show and being able to bring both my genres to the show is an honour.”

“I’d heard about [the event] before and I’d seen people from my old school participate, but I didn’t know it was something anyone could participate in,” he said. “It’s been a really fun experience and we’ve received a lot of one-on-one practice from the trombone tutor so I’ve been able to develop my abilities as well as general skills and playing in a large 80-piece orchestra,” he said.“It’s also good to have a break from schoolwork and have a chance to enrich other other areas of life. “I’ve seen a lot of the performers researching and it’s just amazing to see so many wide ranging skills being utilised from puppeteering to acrobatics. I’m sure it will elevate the final performances to amazing levels.”

The Narre Warren South teen is one of 3000 students from 200 Victorian schools participating in the event, which is back live for the first time in three years. It will be performed to an audience of thousands at John Cain Arena on Saturday 10 September, and later watched by thousands more when it is broadcasted on television. Featuring daredevil skaters, skipping teams, acrobats, hip-hop dancers, giant puppetry, and circus acts, talented vocalists and musicians will perform songs from artists such asThe Beatles, Dua Lipa, StanWalker and Kate Bush in this year’s event with the celebratory theme, ‘Time to Shine’.

He said the Pasefika Choir has also assisted in student engagement at the schools. “Some of the kids might disengage in an academic sense, but having an opportunity to celebrate their culture and collaborate that culture into a school environment - they start to shine,” Shane said. “It also allows teachers to view them in a different light and not only allow students to celebrate culture but it educate staff about the culture of these students.”

The show, which has been a tradition in government schools since its inception in 1995, is not short of South East talent, either. Performers of all ages and abilities will grace the stage, with schools such as Hampton Park Secondary College, Cranbourne West Secondary College, Lyndhurst Secondary College, Nossal High School, Berwick Lodge primary school, Kambrya College, NarreWarren South P-12 College and Hallam Secondary College.

· “Organising a group of people to achieve a common goal.” - Wikipedia. · “Bringing out the best in others and yourself.” - Liberty Leadership Training · “Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.” - John C Maxwell. But the one I like best is the one I recently learnt while watching a Jim Collins webcast: · “The art of getting people to want to do what must be done.” - Jim Collins. There are some very subtle but important aspects to this definition, in particular, noting it is an art and not a science. This implies leadership cannot be affected by simply adhering to a set of rules but instead includes within it an inherent element of creativity. The other key element is it is not about ordering people to do things but true leadership is about influence so that people ‘want to do what must be done’. Great leaders bring people with them through vision and engaging the hearts and minds of those that decide to follow.

So here’s a question you hear from time to time: “Are good leaders born or made?” What do you think? Are there people that are a natural fit for a leadership position or is this something that anyone can take on, given sufficient drive and interest? Before we explore this a bit further, let’s look at what leadership is. You can find many definitions for this:

Think about the great leaders you know – it is through their words and actions, not their directives, that they inspire action in others.

Red Cross friends show off their attire for a cause

TAKING CARE IAN ASH OF BUSINESS ‘Do what must be done’: Leadership is about influence

Think about the great leaders you know – it is through their words and actions, not their directives, that they inspire action in others. Examples include Martin Luther King who had a dream, John F Kennedy who created the vision of landing a man on the moon when the US was trailing Russia in the exploration of space back in 1961 and Winston Churchill who inspired an entire nation to rally when it looked like Great Britain would be defeated in World War II. In business, there is a neat distinction between management and leadership that I would like to share:“Management is about doing things right while leadership is about doing the right things.” This simply explains why some managers don’t make great leaders and also why some leaders aren’t necessarily good at doing things right. So back to the initial question: ‘Are good leaders born or made?’ In working with business leaders, we some times use personality profiling to enable a better understanding of their own natural be havioural preferences, i.e. the things they do naturally well and the sort of things they might struggle with. This approach typically associ ates a person with a profile type that has certain discernible characteristics such as introvert vs extrovert or being well organised and detailoriented as opposed to being a big picture, cre ative person who thinks outside the square. Depending upon the nature of the leadership role, the specific characteristics that a person naturally possesses may make them more, or less, naturally suited to that role. However, once leaders are aware of their natural behavioural preferences, it is quite possible to work on those that are hindering the desired leadership characteristics and so, to some extent, good leadership can be said to be Frommade.a personal perspective, many years ago when I first became a manager, I remember being terrified of public speaking. It was far from natural for me, but I knew I had to learn this skill if I was going to be effective in my role. Many years of practice has helped me overcome this fear and whilst not an expert in this space, it demonstrates that it is possible to learn to overcome such limitations.

“It is a sad reality that at any time of day, first-year P-platers are significantly more likely to be involved in a fatal or serious injury crash than fully licensed drivers, and research shows that risk increases at night,” Minister for Roads and Road safety Ben Carroll“Experiencesaid. and maturity are crucial when it comes to the safety of young drivers – this campaign urges parents, guardians and supervisors to educate learners around the risks and ensure they get at least 20 hours of practice at night.”

The Transport Accident Commission has launched a campaign warning of the dangers of night-time driving. The campaign urges parents, guardians and supervisors to educate learner drivers about the hazards that come with driving at night.Learner drivers are required to complete at least 20 hours of supervised night time driving, with research showing P-platers are about seven times more likely to be killed or injured while driving at night compared to fully licensed drivers. On average, around 31 first-year P-platers are killed or seriously injured while driving at night in Victoria each year, with approximately 50,000 new drivers hitting the roadSoannually.farthisyear, young drivers aged between 18 and 25 have made up around 20 per cent of all driver fatalities, despite this age group only accounting for about 10 per cent of all licence holders. If you don’t live with your dad, your options may seem limited. However, getting creative can provide a different kind of enjoyment for your dad this Father’s Day. Arrange to have a gift hamper of his favourite goodies sent to him from a local small business to put a smile on his face and also support his Makecommunity.sureyougive him a call, or for those technologically-inclined dads, a video chat. It’s likely that he’ll be thrilled just to hear your voice over the phone, and even more so to see your smiling face through a screen.Ifyou live with your dad, the things you can do to make your dad’s day special are almost limitless. Put together a handmade menu of breakfast items and present it to him on Sunday morning, taking careful note of his order. This custom breakfast-inbed service will start his day off in the best way possible! Another idea is to put together a picnic basket of goodies for lunch and have a picnic in your backyard, weather permitting.Ifyou’ve struggled with gifting this Father’s Day, a homemade coupon book is a surefire success. You don’t have to visit the shops or spend much money on this, and the effort that you put in is sure to make your dad smile. Cut some strips of coloured paper and staple them into a small booklet, similar to that of raffle tickets. You can then write redeemable activities on each page, and when dad deems it appropriate, he can cash them in. Things like taking the bins out, breakfast in bed, helping to do the dishes, a movie night or cooking dinner will make your dad feel special and give him even more to look forward to.

And as he is in a race with time to improve his ranking, the teenager has to remain race fit for longer than most. “Para triathlon start lists are only announced four weeks before a race, so I only found out about the Spain race a couple of weeks before leaving Australia,” he explained. “I found out I was selected for Montreal after the France race… I had to re-book all of my flights home and change lots of bookings. “I trained as if I was going to go to Spain and Montreal, because if I didn’t make those races I could always take a break, but if I was selected, I was going to be ready.”

Evans wasn’t short of praise for the multiple premiership-winning defender. “He’s been a superstar,” he said of Heddles.“He’s been so unheralded as a back; I think he played on Charlie Haley in his first game (against Balwyn) last year and I think he kept him to one goal, maybe none. “One on one he just never gets beaten; he is probably one of the most respected guys at the footy club, that’s why we made it a massive thing for him to get the job done.”

Mav Taylor booted seven of Rowville’s eight goals in the Hawks 16th win of the home and away season.

“It’s going to be whether they’re overawed being a young side, but in saying that they’ve beaten everyone around them haven’t they. “It’s a flip of a coin, I honestly think Rowville, but it wouldn’t surprise me if South Croydon jump in there as well.”

“Yeah massive I think, we sort of spoke about it before the game,” he revealed. “We didn’t want to just go into the last game going through the motions and be only two points in front of North Ringwood. “We wanted to make a statement to be that two and a half games clear of them, to say ’you know what’ we really do belong in this“Rileydivision.Heddles retired as well, we wanted to make sure he went out with a bang and the boys were terrific.”

Howell is now building towards the World Championships in Abu Dhabi at the end of November.

“I really enjoyed the scenery of France and Spain, but my favourite country would have to be Spain… the easy-going lifestyle in Girona and Banyoles, the deep blue waters of Banyoles lake and riding the Pyrenees Mountains are my favourite memories.”

Howell proceeded to collect bronze in Spain, finishing on the podium in his World Triathlon Para Cup debut and beating the then world number two – in his category – Ronan Cordeiro from Brazil. In Montreal, Howell debuted in the World Triathlon Para Series and defeated Cordeiro again to place fourth. “Beating Ronan Cordeiro twice – the world ranked number two in the PST5 category – was an awesome feeling,” he revealed.

“I have been waiting for two years to race internationally, due to Covid, so this was my chance to show the world what I’ve got,” he said.“I was focused on chasing down every competitor in front of me, especially in the run.

Now as the Wickers season is officially over, it’s over to the remaining two of the three local rivals to compete for the ultimate prize. One of Rowville or Noble Park will play in the Eastern Football League (EFL) Premier Division grand final. By securing the top two finish, the winner of the major semi-final – between the Hawks and Bulls – will propel into the big dance. The Hawks cemented their position inside the top two a fortnight ago, the minor pre miership a week ago and on Saturday, Row ville claimed bragging rights over potential finals opponent Balwyn, 8.14 (62) to 4.14 (38).

As the chaotic travel slows down – for now –Howell is extremely grateful for his adventures over the last couple of months at such a young age.“It’s been a whirlwind of different countries in such a short time, I wasn’t expecting to have so many race starts this early,” he said.

“I changed my wheel quickly and got back in the race, only to get another flat tyre at the top of the hill… I was out of the race.

“I have a lot of respect for Ronan as a competitor, he is strong and consistent, so to be beating him this early in my international racing showed me that I have the potential to be a competitive athlete on the world stage in the nearWhilefuture.”keeping race fit without knowing whether he will be racing requires an extensive mental and physical training load, Howell isn’t short of finding motivation.

“Just more continuity, that’s the biggest thing for us, instead of playing 48, only playing 30 or 35 and every week we’re getting better.“I think next year it’s two that get relegated, so you know, you take North Ringwood out of it and we’re on the bottom, we’ve got a bit of improving to do.”

The Hawks and the Bulls will enjoy the week off, before facing off at Bayswater Oval for a place in the grand final. Having played each of the competing sides twice, Evans – albeit reluctantly – gave an early tip of which sides he feels will have an impact over the next four weeks. “On the record… oh great,” he joked. “Gee it’s hard… I think Noble Park have probably got a little bit more in the midfield, but in saying that Rowville, if they can get there, Bayswater is a fairly big ground, I can see them exploiting a lot of teams.

“Hopefully we can recruit okay and it looks like we’re keeping most of the list, which is really good.

It’s been a whirlwind of a month for Berwick Para triathlete Jack Howell. While racing in the first of many World Triathlon Para races in Europe, Howell was travel ling strongly, moving into the bike leg in fourth position before disaster hit. But instead of sulking at what could have been, Howell found solace in supporting oth ers.“I was having a great race in Besancon, France, I was in fourth position coming out of the swim and starting to gain on third position at the start of the bike leg,” Howell recalled. “Then my rear tyre blew, it went with a bang and debeaded with force... my heart sank, but I rode the bike to the wheel station which wasn’t too far up the hill.

Cooper MacDonald, Kane Young, Anthony Brolic, Tyler Edwards and Lachlan Stapleton were also named among the Hawks’ best. Noble Park, meanwhile, only needed to collect the four points over Doncaster to register as the second seed, but did so in imperiousThefashion.Bulls put through 27 goals as they thumped Doncaster to the tune of 132 points.

In other matches across Eastern Division: South Croydon surged into third position on the ladder, with a 10.10 (70) to 6.11 (47) win over Norwood; Doncaster East will enter finals series with three successive defeats, after going down 8.13 (61) to 10.16 (76) at the hands of Park Orchards and Blackburn secured victory over Vermont 12.10 (82) to 10.8 (68).

“I knew I was a faster runner than many of the other athletes and the run was where I gave it everything, leaving nothing in the tank.”

In a season where Berwick played nearly 50 senior players, Evans summarised the season as a successful launching pad for seasons to come, while simultaneously warning his group that it won’t get any easier. “I think it was 47 or 48, we just gave the kids opportunity,” he said. “So for the footy club moving forward, it’s great to give them exposure, they now know what it’s about and what they have to do to be better for next year.

“I was frustrated and disappointed, but as I sat on the side of the road waiting for the assist vehicle I started thinking about the next race in Spain, what an awesome experience it was to be in France representing my country, and how flat tyres are the one thing out of my con trol.“I reset and decided to make the most of it and cheer on my competitors as they finished theAfterrace.”recording a DNF in Besancon, Howell then endured the nervous wait to see if he was asked to compete in a following race in Mon treal as his then rank was just outside the num ber of competitors invited.

By Tyler Lewis Narre Warren will go into its qualifying final in a week’s time with the most intriguing of foun dations.Since suffering its one and only defeat of the season in round 15, the Magpies won the following three games by 162 points, 121 points and 167 points. The three game stretch over Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma and Officer has grossed a score line that reads: 84.42 (547) to 13.19 (97). Saturday’s 27.15 (177) to 1.4 (10) win over Officer was the Pies’ smallest score in three weeks. After a 450-point demolition over 12 quarters since tasting defeat at the hands of Woori Yallock, Narre Warren will now have the week off before facing one of the Tigers or Wandin for a spot in the grand final.

The Pies will play the winner ofWandin and Woori Yallock this week and despite losing to the Tigers earlier in the season, Dwyer has no preference in who he would like to see in the first playingNarresay“Youfinal.playwhoyouendupplaying,Iwouldn’tthereisapreference,”headmitted.ThegamewasoriginallysettobeplayedatWarren,butwiththeWandinreservesatEmerald,theleaguehasshiftedthe match to keep the crowds at one venue. “He deserves it, he works his backside off week in, week out, he practices his goal kicking before and after training every week.

“It’s not ideal, but if you look at the other sides, they had pretty easy wins on the week end as well,” he said. “We will train pretty hard on Saturday morning and be pretty competitive, it’s never ideal, but if you have a few niggles here or there, you will look for that week off to give a few guys a rest. “We’re well aware that we’ve had a few easy results and the first final is going to be a lot harder than what we have been experiencing, but there’s not a great deal we can do about it. “We just have to train hard like we have done all year; we’ve been doing a bit of an extra running session for the last five weeks just to keep us on top of the ground, so we will prob ably continue that this week and back off to be ready to go.”

The Pies have cantered to pole position on the Outer East Premier Division ladder as an outcome of 15 wins and a scintillating percent age of And315.39.while many expected Dwyer’s men to be in this position, he was sure to praise them post game, before briefly informing them that it’s back to square one next week.

“I don’t think we have had anyone kick that many goals for a fair while, probably since (Kerem) Baskaya in 2014 or 15-ish, I was rapt for him to get that reward for effort.”

At Woori Yallock, Mount Evelyn overcame the home side by four goals. Up by six goals at three-quarter-time, the visitors were able to maintain the ascendancy in the final quarter. Kaila Swindell, Gabby Bingley and Steph Crilly were all named in the best for Mount Evelyn. With finals not on the cards for Pakenham, it had a disappointing close to the home and away season, going down to fourth-placed Monbulk by 15 goals. Pakenham was never seriously able to challenge Monbulk after trailing by five goals at quarter time. Eliza Molino was named best player and sharpshooter Rose Laidlaw again contributed, scoring 24 goals. With a 6-12 win-loss record this season, Pakenham complete the season in seventh position.Inthe other premier division match, Beaconsfield defeated Upwey Tecoma by three goals.

DIVISION ONE It was second v third on the division one ladder, but the gulf between the two sides suggested a far greater ladder gap when Seville defeated Emerald by 29 goals. That match closes out a disappointing season for Berwick Springs which managed just two wins from 17 games, finishing on the bottom of the table.

Although Maggies coach Shane Dwyer is aware of the final month ahead of his group’s finals campaign, he isn’t dwelling on things be yond his control.

“Then we will prepare for whoever we have to play next week… they’re well aware that the serious stuff starts now, we don’t have to push it that hard.” Of the 84 goals Narre Warren has kicked in the last three outings, Jake Richardson fired off 22 of them, ultimately securing the league goal-kicking award with 71 majors. Fittingly, he will step up to the plate an even four decades after his father Stephen led the then ROC Football Club to its maiden openage“Ipremiership.havefondmemories from back then and telling dad I was going to go for the job… he got a bit excited, because he really enjoyed his time at ROC,” Charles revealed of his link to theCharlesclub. famously steered Doveton from a season without celebration in 2018 to the ulti mate glory in 2019. And with Officer falling from the top flight as a result of just two wins this season, Charles is confident it won’t take much for him to turn this group around.

“We’re rapt to get Charlesy,” he said. “He comes to us with a great deal of experience across a number of clubs, but he also understands what it takes to play in this league and the division we’re preparing to move into next“Heyear.ultimately understands how to win a flag in this comp, which for us is very exciting.

“For me as a coach, my number one asset is that I care, I actually care about the people that I coach, it’s not all about what they can do for you on field, but how they’re going off it as well.

A barnstorming 10-goal third quarter set up victory for Doveton in its Southern Division Two qualifying final against Keysborough.Leadingby seven points at the main break, after just three goals were kicked in the first half, the Doves got the game on their terms in the third quarter, coming out with intent and capitalising on theMichaelscoreboard.Cardamone’s men kicked all but four of their goals in that quarter on their way a 14.13.97 to 5.8.38 triumph.

“We definitely played in a way I think we can do week in, week out, so it was pleasing and hopefully that gives us the belief against the best side in the comp in Chelsea.”Keysborough was kept to just five goals for the entire contest as its leading goalkicker, Tom Shaw, was held goalless while Matt Carnelley finished with just one.Cardamone, who kicked two of his side’s goals, praised his team’s defensive effort.“Jake (Inglasio), spent time on Tom, who worked up and down the ground well and Harley Burmeister was given a shutdown role as well,” he said.

“I suppose it will help, knowing I have been in a similar situation before,” he said of his re build“It’sexperience.justabout getting the right people at the club and helping to develop the young kids.“Having people that are willing to learn to play with their teammates and become really good teammates.

“So I think if we can get the right people around them, the bounce back will be fairly quick.”While he expects the bounce back to be swift, Charles isn’t making any promises on an identical Doveton-like transformation. However, he is making one promise… his Roos will be entertaining to watch! “As far as game style goes, I want the team to play a brand that people actually enjoy watching and people enjoy playing,” he said.

The BDTA had two winning teams in the AJL with the Under-12 Boys and Under-14 Girls playing some wonderful team tennis. Here are this week’s results from the BDTA and AJL over the weekend:

Just three goals were kicked in the first half, which Cardamone described as anTherearm-wrestle.wasasense Doveton was on top in general play at Ben Kavanagh Reserve, kicking with the wind in the first quarter, but it was unable to convert its five shots, so went in with a three-point deficit.

“It showed how I know we can play our footy and I suppose it has just taken 18 rounds and two quarters to click.

“History is always a factor when looking at big decisions, but certainly in the case of Charlesy, he got the gig purely and squarely because he was the right man for the job at this particular moment.

Officer Football Club president Nick McLennan was stoked to have Charles put pen to paper and further revealed how he believes the dark times at the Roos will be short lived.

“Matthew Jameson played on Carnelley as well, which was fantastic, and Jake’s run as well went a long way to helping win the game.”

“I have always been one that likes to develop and help people improve.”

Two goals late in the first half meant the Doves went into halftime with a seven-point lead and they clicked into gear afterJosiahthat. Kyle was electric, named in the best with ruckman Dylan Chapman, who connected well with midfielders Jake Basa and Harley Primrose throughout the contest. The 59-point margin will give Doveton momentum ahead of a clash with top-placed Chelsea Heights in the second semi-final next Saturday, with the winner to go straight through to the grand final.

“I think that was the main thing that turned Doveton around; you had people that were willing to learn and improve, whether they were 32 years old, or 16 years old, they did what was best for the team. “I think Officer is in a similar situation, coming off a tough year this year, but they’ve got some really good kids and hopefully we can get some good senior heads around them.”

Charles spent 2022 coaching an underage Indigenous Victorian basketball side, and while he admits the structure of basketball won’t be comparable to footy, he is looking forward to translating those learnings into a club that’s bursting at the seems with junior participation.“Ireallymissed it this year, I love coaching, I had the year off coaching football this year, but I managed to get a gig coaching the under-14 Indigenous Victorian basketball team, so that kept me busy for the early part of the year,” he said.“I learned the way different people learn and how to find structures for other people. “It’s very exciting, the juniors, it’s one of the things that attracted me to the club, knowing it’ll be nice to coach at a job that actually has an influx of kids coming through each year.

Daniel Charles knows what it takes to win premierships.
