By Marcus Uhe Volunteers at the Devon Meadows Fire Brigade are reluctant to hang pictures in their Finsbury Road Fire Station due to the presence of asbes tos in the wall. It makes conducting maintenance and running repairs more difficult than it should be, due to the complications posed to health and safety. The station, built by members in 1946, is two separate structures merged into one. The rear of the station, which houses the brigade’s vehicles, was once the Narre Warren Fire Sta tion, but was given to Devon Meadows some 40 years ago. With no off-street parking available on Finsbury Road, the 32 volunteers are forced to share two parking spaces at the front of the building and four at the rear, but may be re quired to move their cars if there’s difficulty getting the vehicles out in an emergency situ ation.Their hose rack is forced into a narrow alley at the side of the building bordering the fence and can takes weeks to properly dry a hose, due to the lack of sunlight it attracts. And like most suburbs in the ever-expanding South East of Melbourne, land is at a pre mium. The station borders the Devon Mead ows Scout Hall and Glover Recreation Reserve, meaning there’s little room for an upgrade or expansion at the current site. This means that volunteers are forced to change into their breathing apparatus and protective equipment next to the fire truck while it’s running in a small enclosed space and risk inhaling fumes from the truck as the engine starts, with the clock ticking in an emergency situation to get out the door as quickly as Despitepossible.numerous applications to the CFA for funding over the years, the brigade feel they have been left behind, having been rejected on the basis that there is a lack of money and land available.
New emergency service stations in the region, such as the SES Unit coming to Cranbourne, or fire and police stations coming to Clyde, all had land acquired in the last 18 months.Nathan Thorp, Captain of the Devon Meadows Fire Brigade, is wondering when they’ll be next.“We are definitely forgotten about,” Mr Thorp“Thesaid.SES Unit coming to Cranbourne is going to be a huge help for the community and it’s going to take a lot of stress off of NarreWarren (SES Unit). Having that is going to be fantastic but it is a bit of a kick in the guts in a way. “It’s funny how they have land and they have the money to do it and it’s like, how come we don’t?What went wrong under CFA, or how come we can’t do what they’re doing? “Unfortunately with the amount of money we do need, there is no grant out there for us to actually go out there and build something. “We need room to grow with the community in order to keep protecting it.”
Station
Previous Captain Andrew Swain led the brigade for 15 years before handing the reigns to MrOfThorp.particular grievance to both the previous and current captain is the creation of a fiveyear plan documented in 2010 that prioritised Devon Meadows CFA, but nothing came to fruition.MrSwain accused authorities of playing politics when it came to funding distributions. “It’s a big pond and we’re a little fish,” he said.

Nine councils have called for more state and federal funding to tackle climate change in the South East. In its 2022 policy platform, the South East Councils Climate Change Alliance has called for $70 million funding of regional projects such as a $20 million network of electric vehicle charging stations.
Chair of administrators Noelene Duff PSM said the council would use the survey results to identify the feeling of the community with regards to their services and programs.
“Action on climate change is front of mind for residents living in the SECCCA region; the community is asking us to take action locally as well as nationally but we can’t do this alone” SECCCA chair and Bass Coast Shire mayor Michael Whelan said at the policy launch on 24 August.

Top areas of concern in Casey and Cardinia include bushfires, drought, extreme temperatures and loss of biodiversity and habitat.InGreater Dandenong, the top concerns were the need for more trees in public spaces and streets, reduced waste to landfill and for the council to use renewable energy.
Casey cops low ranking
“Local government is best-placed to help our communities address climate change, while building resilience and preparing for future impacts,“ Cr Whelan said.
It is also advocating for “greener, cooler, more liveable cities” and more net-zerocarbonSECCCA’sbuildings.members are councils of Greater Dandenong, Casey, Cardinia Shire, Kingston, Frankston, Mornington Peninsula Shire, Bass Coast Shire, Bayside and Port Phillip. Each council has declared a climate emergency, and set targets to reduce their corporateAccordingcarbon-emissions.toSECCCA,community surveys in the South East have shown overwhelming support for climate action.
The City of Greater Dandenong launched an Urban Forest Strategy with a goal to increase tree canopy coverage in the municipality by six per cent by 2028. The council said 73 per cent of land in Greater Dandenong is privately owned with low canopy cover, which combined with a disadvantaged population and high temperatures, leads to suburbs within the municipality being classified as ‘highly vulnerable’ to urban heat and climate change impacts.
Casey has been without councillors since February 2020 after the State Government passed legislation to sack the entire sitting council, following allegations of corruption linked to property developer John Woodman. The next election will be held in October 2024.Inpositive news for the council, their cus tomer service, waste management and sealed local roads scores were all higher than the state average, while their overall direction tied.Their customer service score was the high est rating they received.

According to Ms Langmaid, environmental and geographical factors make residents in the South East particularly at-risk to climate change problems.
“It was pleasing to again see our Customer Service score increase by three index points, bringing it close to pre-pandemic levels,” Ms Duff“Wesaid.are committed to building and im proving all areas of council’s services and we will use the community feedback provided in this survey to review our services and consid er where improvements can be made.”
Residents are appalled at the presentation of Casey’s community spaces. Casey was plagued by issues of long grass in their parks and recreation reserves following storms in late 2021, compounded by staffing and equipment issues with their contractor.
“Getting these things right in our communities will help both State and Federal government to achieve their emissions targets much sooner – which is what everyone is seeking.”CrWhelan said climate change was leading to rising infrastructure costs due to disasters, rising insurance premiums and rising energy bills due to higher temperatures.
“We’re not investigating the impacts, but what the community know about the links of climate change and human health,” Ms Lang maid“Wesaid.know people have food insecurity problems or housing needs and climate change may not be on their list of primary con cerns but we want to know how we can help a vulnerable community adapt and be more resilient.“This project, with the data we’ll receive from survey and the focus groups, will help identify what the community know and don’t know about health impacts of climate change and what they value. Understanding what they value is “We’rekey.hoping to create a communications toolkit for local government areas and stake holders to produce evidence-informed com munications around climate change.”

Through the South East Councils Climate Change Awareness, the City of Casey is working with other local government areas in the region to understand the impacts of climate change and how to best prepare for them, such as a rainfall decrease, fire risks and rising temperatures.“TheLGAs we work a lot with in the climate change and health space, there’s a lot of momentum happening in this space in health promotions and community wellbeing areas,” Ms Langmaid said. “Climate change is becoming more prevalent in priority focus of these teams and climate change health impacts are embedded into council health wellbeing plans. “There’s a lot to do always but I do feel positive about a lot’s that being done.” To participate in the survey, head to enliven.org.au/climatehealthsurveyOnlinefocusgroupsonthesame topic will also be run in October 2022. The council has ranked substantially lower than the state average - 59 compared to 71 - for the appearance of public areas in the annual Local Government Community Satisfaction Survey, in results publicised by the shire on Wednesday 17 August. More than 5000 customer requests for storm and tree-related assistance were lodged between October and December 2021, and in an update provided on Tuesday 12 April, the council said there was more than 1600 out standing requests from jobs received between October 2021 and January 2022. Other areas in which Casey was ranked be low the state average were value for money, overall performance, community decisions, lobbying, and consultation and engagement.

The work was done as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project and $1 billion up grade and duplication of the Cranbourne line. In total, it is expected to slash 175,000 truck trips on the Monash Freeway and suburban roads each year, and to cut freight transport costs by up to 10 per cent.

An 865-metre spur-line railway track has been completed in the South East, as part of the Port Rail Shuttle Network (PRSN). The $28 million track via the Cranbourne line will link a massive intermodal freight ter minal in Bayliss Road, Dandenong South to the Port of Melbourne.
“That’s why we’re investing in projects like the Port Rail Shuttle Network – to enable pro ducers and operators to transport their prod uct quicker and cheaper to port and to market, as well as create jobs and take more trucks off our local Dandenongroads.”MP Gabrielle Williams said the project was “critical for the South East econo my” as well as commuters, business produc tivity and job creation. She said it would take “thousands of trucks off the Monash and other key arterial and suburbanTheroads.”$150million freight terminal will be built and operated by Salta Properties later thisSaltayear.will build two 650-metre rail tracks to connect the spur line to its 500,000-square metre terminal and warehousing area. The fully-automated terminal will be capable of handling 560,000 containers annually. Salta founding director Sam Tarascio has pushed the vision for 18 years as an answer to road freight and congestion. He recently said it would be a “major godsend” for a precinct filling with importers, exporters and major distribution centres such as Amazon, Bunnings and Woolworths. As part of the PRSN, other freight hubs in Altona and Somerton will also connect to a new rail terminal at Port of Melbourne. By 2050, the Port Rail Shuttle Network is predicted to move 30 per cent of Melbourne containers by rail to terminals in Dandenong South, Altona and Somerton. The Federal Government invested $18.3 million and the Victorian Government $9.7 million in the spur line project.

South Gippsland Freeway promo a ‘safety hazard’
A proposed major electronic advertising sign near merge lanes on South Gippsland Freeway in Hallam has been refused as an “unacceptable safety hazard”. Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal senior member Bill Sibonis on 29 July rejected plans for two 42-square metre signs on a pole in a V formation facing north and southboundThetraffic.north-facing electronic sign was to feature 30 second static advertisements, without animation or moving images. It would be displayed to 30,000 southbound vehicles a day, including cars merging from the Princes Highway on-ramp about 150 metres from the sign.
The Head, Transport Victoria objected to the plan due to “particular concentration” be ing required at the merge, Mr Sibonis noted.
The applicant High Street Media Group submitted an assessment that the sign’s design “will not dazzle or distract drivers”, nor would it affect drivers’ ability to concentrate at theMrmerge.Sibonis said the merge lane would not end until past the sign’s location.
“You can continue with the path … or you can return to the lifestyle you were livingchaotic, erratic and beholden to whatever drugs you were taking.” Judge Ellis said ordinarily Cashen would have been jailed, but it was in the community’s interest to have him rehabilitated.
“Whilst you shouldn’t be rewarded for being a law abiding and hardworking citizen, it’s not easy for people with a history of drug use and criminal offending to change their lives in the way that you have.” Cashen was sentenced to a three-year CCO, including 350 hours of unpaid work as well as drug and mental health treatment and a roadtrauma awareness program.

Sentencing judge Angela Ellis said the father of two had been speeding at an estimated 100km/h on the wrong side of the road while passing a traffic island and another car about 6.40am on 18 June 2018. Cashen steered back onto the correct side of the road, hitting the victim who was thrown up to 25 metres into roadside bushes. He works with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre as a community organiser and teaches photojournalism at the RMIT University in Melbourne.
“It’s about giving them hope, letting them know they’re not alone, and knowing that, while going through adversity isn’t fun, if they have strategies to implement to help them out, they can get through it,” Mr Heppell said. He said kids often struggle to seek help when they’re going through tough times, often for fear of judgement.
Awful Augusts for Hazara communities

The Resilience Project routinely attends schools to educate kids on dealing with mental health.
By Barat Ali Batoor I don’t normally believe any month or day is any worse than the other, but for some reason August has an awful place in the history of the Hazara people in Afghanistan. When the Taliban took control of the northern border town of Mazar e Sharif on 8 August, 1998, the mass killings that followed claimed the lives of between 2000 and 5000, according to theWashington Post. Local residents believe more than 15,000 Hazaras were massacred. In August 2013, I embarked on my journey to asylum in Australia after I received death threats over my photo essay published in the Washington Post. I travelled with people smugglers through Pakistan and Southeast Asia. When I was locked up in a safe house in Malaysia, I heard the news the first group of people seeking asylum had been sent for offshore processing. The news dropped on me and 19 other Hazara asylum-seekers like a bomb. It was a difficult decision to make but we were all on the same page. We could not go back to Afghanistan because of the threats the Hazaras were facing in general and individuals in particular.Wedecided to keep going in the hope that we would at least be safe on one of the offshore islands. Ten years later, I realise how lucky I was that I did not end up in Papua New Guinea or Nauru where I would have suffered under Australia’s harsh immigration policies. Last year, on the day Kabul fell to the returning Taliban, the then president shambolically escaped and surrendered the country to the terrorist Accordinggroup.toUnited Nations reports, some 3.4 million people from Afghanistan were displaced by the conflict and nearly 20 million people - almost half the population - are now facing acute hunger. The Hazaras have once again become the victims of Taliban and ISIS atrocities. Thousands were evicted from their ancestral lands in Daikundi, Uruzgan, Helmand and Balkh in the early months of the Taliban occupation. The community has been attacked in schools, mosques, on public transport and more recently in religious processions and gatherings to the west of Kabul when they were commemorating the death of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad. Taliban attacked their only Hazara commander last month in Balkhab district in northern Sar-e-pol province after he parted his ways from them. As a result many civilians were killed and thousands of Hazaras took shelter in the mountains. More than 5000 refugees from Afghanistan are currently on temporary visas in Australia and some remain in detention centres. Most of them are Hazaras. The diaspora community called on the previous Scott Morrison Government to grant them permanent protection, but one year after the fall of Kabul they are still living in uncertainty. The Labor government promised in their election campaign that they would abolish the TPV/SHEV and provide permanent resettlement pathways for all refugees. They also promised that they would expedite family reunion visas and clear the way for citizenship. That will give them the opportunity to reunite with their families, many of whom are still living in Afghanistan under fear of persecution. They hope the Albanese government will fulfil their election promise soon as possible and end this uncertainty.

“After two years of really tough lockdowns, social isolation and navigating the challenges of online learning, it’s no wonder we are seeing such confronting statistics about our children’s mental health,” he said. A thrilling combination
Hili’s choreography was both reminiscent of the original production and fresh with new ideas suited for the talents of each performer. While the show is an ensemble based-musical with no standout stars (the whole cast showed different strengths throughout and will only continue to grow in confidence as the season continues), Michael Zinner (Mike) and Lukas Masterson (Greg) gave a masterclass in dance for the audience, showing off their impressive technique from previous professional experience. Both set the bar high in the opening number I Hope I Get It, with a fabulous follow up from Zinner in I Can Do That. It would have been a treat to have heard the cast in taps for the tap number, however staging constraints makes it hard for the dancers to change shoes. By now it’s well established that with Hili’s name on the bill, the costume design is going to be top notch. Most of the character’s primary outfits were heavily inspired by the original Broadway production, including Diane’s marone and green long sleeve top with sneakers and Cassie’s red leotard and ballet skirt. The anticipation for the finale sequence exceeded expectations with a landscape of glitz and sparkle and great choreography again by Hili.A Chorus Line is running at Cranbourne Community Theatre until Saturday 3 September. By Shelby Brooks Broadway’s singular sensation A Chorus Line has opened at Cranbourne Community The atre as part of CPAC Musical Theatre’s 20th an niversary year. The musical was created from interviews with real Broadway dancers and was a hit when it first debuted in 1975. A recent survey conducted by the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB), indicated that consumers place an exceptionally high level of confidence in their registered tax practitioner. The results showed 89% of consumers have trust in the tax practitioner and 66% of consumers rate the experience they receive from their tax practitioner as excellent. While this is great news for both the tax profession and taxpayers, the TPB is warning the public to be extra vigilant of scams aiming to lure unsuspecting honest consumers into using the tax services of unregistered preparers. Unregistered preparers operate outside of the law, often making money by skimming a portion of their clients’ refunds and charging
NEWS
TPB Chair, Ian Klug AM, warned, “Since the clear majority of tax practitioners act in the best interests of their clients and earn their trust, unregistered preparers can take advantage of uninformed consumers. We’ve put together a list of tips for taxpayers to follow this tax time to make sure they don’t become victims of bad advice. If you see a tax practitioner making unexpected promises or an unregistered preparer offering tax services, it pays to be alert and a bitInsceptical“.arecent case investigated by the TPB an unregistered preparer, was banned by the Federal Court from charging clients a fee or receiving a reward to lodge their income tax returns. During the 2020-21 tax season, the unregistered preparer illegally prepared thousands of tax returns leaving her clients exposed to penalties and unpaid taxes which they would be liable to repay.
So here’s a question you hear from time to time: “Are good leaders born or made?” What do you think? Are there people that are a natural fit for a leadership position or is this something that anyone can take on, given sufficient drive and interest? Before we explore this a bit further, let’s look at what leadership is. You can find many definitions for this: · “Organising a group of people to achieve a common goal.” - Wikipedia. · “Bringing out the best in others and yourself.” - Liberty Leadership Training · “Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.” - John C Maxwell. But the one I like best is the one I recently learnt while watching a Jim Collins webcast: · “The art of getting people to want to do what must be done.” - Jim Collins. There are some very subtle but important aspects to this definition, in particular, noting it is an art and not a science. This implies leadership cannot be affected by simply adhering to a set of rules but instead includes within it an inherent element of creativity. The other key element is it is not about ordering people to do things but true leadership is about influence so that people ‘want to do what must be done’. Great leaders bring people with them through vision and engaging the hearts and minds of those that decide to follow. Think about the great leaders you know – it is through their words and actions, not their directives, that they inspire action in others.
Examples include Martin Luther King who had a dream, John F Kennedy who created the vision of landing a man on the moon when the US was trailing Russia in the exploration of space back in 1961 and Winston Churchill who inspired an entire nation to rally when it looked like Great Britain would be defeated in World War II. In business, there is a neat distinction between management and leadership that I would like to share:“Management is about doing things right while leadership is about doing the right things.” This simply explains why some managers don’t make great leaders and also why some leaders aren’t necessarily good at doing things right. So back to the initial question: ‘Are good leaders born or made?’
Think about the great leaders you know – it is through their words and actions, not their directives, that they inspire action in others.

“There were stages through the middle of the year where we went through a bad patch, and Jack was playing in Tassie or elsewhere at the same time we were, and I found my self questioning whether I was doing the right thing as a Dad.

“He’s probably one of the best blokes I’ve met through footy - a fun guy, he takes his footy seriously, but he makes it enjoyable for everyone and he put in hours of work that people don’t see,“ McGowan said.

“Before this year, I’d never missed a game of Jack’s footy,” Wilson said. “I’d always been at his junior games at Narre South or been assistant coach.
“And missing Sienna on a Thursday night at Jells Park in her rep side because I’m at footy training, I question whether I am letting her down, so it started to get to me.”
Nathan got to coach Jack in eight games across the two seasons and names a five-point away win against Keysborough in round one last year as being among his coaching high lights.“Jack kicked the winning goal in that game and it was his first senior game, and the footy club started (the season) a little bit slowly so it was a desperate game,” he said. With an eight and four record in 2021 before the season was closed down due to the pan demic, Hampton Park looked set to play finals, but this year the club recharged with youth to set itself for sustained success - a decision led by Wilson.Hampton Park won four of its final five games of the home and away season this year, looking likely to sneak into finals, before East Brighton upset Chelsea in the last round to sneak into fifth position. Their sixth placed finish in 2022 means ‘Nanga’ ends his time with 15 wins, 12 losses and a draw from his two seasons in charge.
“What will really irk me looking back is not getting the opportunity to play finals because I definitely think the footy club is good enough to play division two finals so that is a bit disappointing,” Wilson said. “But I think I have left the club in a much stronger place than when I started at the start of last year so I’m proud of that.”

Aston Rupee, trained by Glenn Rounds at Devon Meadows and raced by successful South Australian breeder Ray Borda, was also named Sprinter of the Year. In winning 14 of his 26 starts during the 2021/22 racing year, Aston Rupee did it all, earning the tag of the world’s fastest greyhound with an array of spectacular performances.
Nathan’s son, Jack, is in the Dandenong Stingrays squad, and daughter, Sienna, plays representative netball, with Nathan wanting to make sure he is available for them both.
Wife, Melinda, is also involved with the club, a key figure on the netball side. Wilson thanked the committee and wider club for its support of him as a first-time coach.

Aston Rupee’s other two feature race victories came in events made to order – the foursprinter G3 Sandown Shootout (515m) and G3 Speed Star match race series (525m) at The Meadows. However, it was Aston Rupee’s recordbreaking performance at Sandown on September 9 that stands as his legacy, and perhaps will do for many years to come. Aston Rupee stopped the clock at an almost incomprehensible 28.79sec, smashing the previous 515m benchmark of 28.90sec, established by Hard Style Rico in the 2020 Melbourne Cup final by almost two lengths. Incredibly, Aston Rupee went on to break the 29-second mark at Sandown in a further three race appearances, running 28.89sec, 28.94sec and 28.95sec. While he had an obvious affinity with Sandown, Aston Rupee came within .01sec of adding The Meadows 525m record to his resume, when winning the Australian Cup Consolation in 29.38sec, at what would be his second last start before being retired to stud. The Victorian Sprinter of the Year recognises performances over distances less than 570 metres, with Ferdinand Boy, Koblenz, Lala Kiwi and Wow She’s Fast all acknowledged by the Greyhound of the Year Panel as having exceptional seasons.
Hampton Park coach Nathan Wilson has in formed the club he will not continue next year as he steps back from the role for family rea sons.He informed the club of his decision last week and leaves on good terms, saying he will remain involved either in a less official capac ity or as a supporter going forward. When the club begun to plan for 2023 in early July,Wilson informed footy manager Paul McGowan of his family dilemma, giving his blessing for the club to pursue other options.

Nathan Wilson is keen to remain involved with the Hampton Park footy club despite stepping back from the coaching role.
Aston Rupee created history by winning both the Topgun and Temlee, becoming the first sprinter to complete The Meadows’ invitational double. He started favourite in his two other Group 1 appearances, in the Melbourne and Adelaide Cups, finishing fourth on both occasions.

The result means Dingley jump St Kilda City to fourth position on the ladder at the end of the home and away season, perhaps giving the Dingoes the mental edge going into the elimination final – but the Saints won their most recent encounter. The Saints’ loss this week was to table-topping Cheltenham by 17 points but they took it up to the Rosellas, with former AFL players Aaron Edwards, Brendan Fevola and Dane Swan combining for nine of their side’s 12 goals. In other results: St Pauls McKinnon defeated Mordialloc by 66 points; and Port Melbourne defeated Springvale Districts by four points.

The last time Cranbourne met this week’s qualifying final opponent, St Pauls McKinnon, the Eagles came out on top by two points.
By Jonty Ralphsmith Cranbourne and Dingley both recorded straightforward wins to close out the home and away season. The Eagles defeated Bentleigh by 82 points, extending their lead at every break. Ryan Jones kicked five goals, and Marc Holt finished with three for the second consecutive week.“We’ve continued to build over the last month and we’re starting to get some things right,” Cranbourne coach Steve O’Brien said. “We’ve gotten our ball movement going the way we wanted it to again, and that took a bit of time, and we’ve had some injuries so getting the side settled has been the key.” “One of the challenges was just getting the job done on Saturday and not looking too far ahead because it is always easy to do that with finals around the corner. “So it was all about not playing safe and playing the game right out which we did – so it wasGlenngood.”Osborne and Bailey Buntine were named the best players, O’Brien pleased with their resistance in the back half. “They defend really well which we rate highly – they nullified their opponents but also gave us important drive,” O’Brien said.

They were exposed for the first and only time this season in the first 40 minutes against the Doggies, but somehow found a way to claw their way back into the contest. That mid second-quarter fightback – when all looked lost – was super impressive to wit ness close up! Phillip Island is a brave warrior – a su perb and respected football club – but it’s the Seagulls to invade their territory – and win the first ticket to the big dance - with a fighting four-point victory. It will propel the Gulls to their first grand final since 1999 and give them the chance to break a 25-year drought that extends all the way back to 1997. But the bigger battle…as Alexander, Geng his, Julius andWilliam will tell you…is certain ly not done with yet!

Brent Macaffer and Adam Oxley bring proven AFL quality to the list, while Piva Wright and Blake Grewar are elite performers at this level of the game. Stewie Scanlon, Brad Butler, Brady Egan and Jimmy Trezise have brought skill and fire-power to the front half, while Stevie Robb, Liam Adams, Dylan Paarlberg and Cooper Shipp have added elements missing from sea sons gone by. The bottom six at the Gulls is a lot more powerful than three years ago! The Gulls put that extended fire-power and consistency to good use when they first con fronted the Bulldogs in round nine this year. A 74-point flogging broke the Bulldogs eight-game winning streak…and caught ev eryone a little off guard. “It was clearly one of the better perfor mances that I’ve been involved with in my time at the club…it was great,” said Tooradin coach Lachie Gillespie at the time. “And it’s such a great win because of the quality of the opposition…they’re a quality football team and have been for many years.
By David Nagel History is littered with brave warriors that refuse to surrender their territory without a fight…and reigning-champion Phillip Island will need to stave off the biggest uprising in West Gippsland football when the Bulldogs collide head-on with Tooradin-Dalmore on Saturday.Thetwo teams lock horns in the second semi-final at Inverloch – with a grand final place up for grabs – with the back-to-back premiers of 2018/19 taking on the minor pre mier of this year. And with all due respect to Cora Lynn - who lost to the Bulldogs by four points in the 2019 grand final - this appears to be the biggest threat yet to the Bulldogs recent reign of su premacy.BeauVernon and his team will need to channel the traits of some of the great war riors in history to make it three premierships on the Alexandertrot. the Great, Genghis Khan, Ju lius Caesar and William Wallace (and David Noble) all fought the bravest of battles…Are the Doggies up for the ultimate challenge this year? These two met at the same stage in 2019 –in the Seagulls inaugural year in the WGFNC – with the Bulldogs prevailing by 24 points in a huge first-step towards two flags on the trot. The Seagulls would bow out at the pre liminary final stage…being trounced by Cora Lynn by 50 points. Then of course we missed the last two years - with Covid giving us all a good smack around the ears. It’s fair to say the Gulls look a completely different unit to the 2019 model. The Goon’s pressure was extraordinary, causing the Magpies to cough up the ball time and time again. Dale and Bec Cox (WD) were terrific, but it was the creative genius and quick thinking of Meaghan Winter (WA) that really stood out from the pack.
Recent narrow losses to Tooradin-Dalmore (45-47) and Inverloch-Kongwak (36-38) made it well known that the Goon girls were playing good netball, but defeating a top-four team had been something that had eluded them since round one. But at a picturesque Garfield Recreation Reserve…with no more second chances…it all clicked for the navy blue and whites! Nar Nar Goon was magnificent, riding ferocious pressure right across the court to a 41-32 victory over the now-eliminated Magpies.
The first quarter was tense and tight, with Magpie Grace McRae (C) having a great duel with Chantelle Dale through the midcourt, while both defences were absolutely focussed on giving nothing away. Only a goal separated the teams at quarter time, with the Goon kicking out to a four-goal lead – half way through the contest.
The Goon stepped it up in the third, and the Magpies had no answers.
For Juddy, it’s Clarke-worklike
By Tyler Lewis Juddy doesn’t miss! Berwick Football Club and Dandenong Stingrays product Judson Clarke showed nerves of steel in the dying stages of Richmond’s VFL encounter with Frankston on Saturday. TheTigers trailed by three points with 29 and a half minutes gone in the final term and needed a moment of brilliance to keep their season alive. The ball spilled out to Clarke – who had already kicked two – on the wrong side for a left footer, gifting the teenager a chance to seal the game. He gathered, steadied, and flushed the left-foot check side at full tilt – guiding theTigers to the front and the live top eight.Clarke’s third goal of the afternoon sent the Swinburne Centre into a frenzy, as he steered the Tigers home to a 9.18 (72) to 10.9 (69) triumph. His three goals were accompanied by 19 disposals, while Beaconsfield product Jake Aarts – who was involved in the handball chain that ended with Clarke –had 35 possessions. The kick from Clarke placed the Tigers inside the live top eight, but with Carlton defeating Collingwood on Sunday; Richmond’s position inside the eight was short lived. Casey, meanwhile, tasted defeat for the first time in 2022. The formerly 17-0 Demons were outclassed by a slick Brisbane outfit, 10.11 (71) to 8.9 (57). Mitch Robinson was a stone in the Demons shoe, collecting 42 disposals, while Deven Robertson stuffed the stat sheet with 30 touches and three goals. Local product Mitch Cox had 18 disposals and 1.1. The win for Brisbane (second) was incredibly important, as it saved the Lions from losing a home final to Southport (third).Casey will now host Sydney to kick off its finals campaign. Juddy doesn’t need much space to ice the game.
