Australia’s rabbit plague traced back to Winchelsea
AAP
DNA analysis of wild rabbits has traced back to a site near Winchelsea that was responsible for the plague that now exists in Australia. Scientists used genetics and historical records to reveal how the species pulled off one of the most infamous biological invasions of all time.
At least 90 subsequent importations would be made, but none of these populations became invasive before 1859. Within the next 50 years, rabbits would spread to all corners of the country at a rate of 100km per year, the fastest colonisation rate for an introduced mammal ever recorded. Historians assumed the rabbit plague began at the Barwon Park estate of Thomas Austin, near Winchelsea. Within three years of importing wild rabbits from his family’s land in Somerset in the UK, Austin rabbits had multiplied to thousands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the ‘grey blanket’, as it was described, had well and truly spread to all corners of the country. More than 150 years have passed since Austin introduced those wild rabbits. Now findings published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) rectify this version of events with genetic data and show invasive rabbits descended from Austin’s imports to wreak havoc across theThecontinent.study, led by the University of Cambridge and CIBIO Institute in Portugal, with collaborators from UNSW Sydney, answers longstanding questions over how rabbits executed a hostile takeover of Australia’s landscape.

“Environmental change may have made Australia vulnerable to invasion, but it was the genetic makeup of a small batch of wild rabbits that ignited one of the most iconic biological invasions of all time,” lead author Dr Joel Alves, a researcher at the University of Oxford and CIBIO Institute, said.

By Cassandra Morgan, AAP Viva Energy has been slapped with a $110,000 fine after two of its workers were exposed to potentially deadly acid. The workers were exposed in separate incidents in 2017. The first happened in November, when a worker wearing a helmet, goggles, and gloves came up against a cloud of acid vapour and the company failed to notify WorkSafe. In December, a second leak left a worker hospitalised for acid exposure, with their symptoms including a prolonged sore throat and skin sensitivity. They were also wearing a helmet, goggles, and gloves.
The Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College (MFG) student and Leopold resident was inspired to write the book by her younger cousin, who she says is still “crazy about noodles”.“It’sbeen really good, I’ve always loved writing and drawing but I never thought I’d be a published author,” Bianca said.

By Oliver Caffrey, AAP Minor premiers Geelong have been rewarded for an outstanding AFL season by having five players named in the All-Australian team. The premiership favourites make up almost a quarter of the 22, with star forward Tom Hawkins on Wednesday night unveiled as captain of the AFL’s team of the year for the first time. It is the evergreen goal-kicker’s fifth All-Australian selection, while breakout Geelong teammate Tyson Stengle was named beside Hawkins in a forward pocket. Stengle has been a revelation in his first year at Geelong, playing all 22 games and kicking 46 goals to top up a lethal forward line with Hawkins and fellow star Jeremy Cameron. After gaining two All-Australian selections at GWS in 2013 and 2019, Cameron was picked at centre-half-forward in his second season withReigningGeelong.premiers Melbourne weren’t far behind, with Max Gawn being named All-Australian for a sixth time, and fifth year in a Stevenrow. May was picked at full-back for the second-straight year, while fellow Demons stars Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca also earned selection.
“It’s just wonderful to see so many members of the Geelong business community being represented here tonight,” he said.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce (GCC) held its latest After 5 event last week to showcase some of the finalists of the 2022 Geelong Business Excellence Awards (GBEA). In conjunction with GBEA major sponsor, LBW Business + Wealth Advisors, the GCC hosted representatives from businesses all across Geelong at catering specialist Truffleduck’s Fyansford venue to hear from GBEA finalists. The awards were created to provide a platform to recognise excellence but also provide businesses with constructive feedback from its experienced judges. GCC chief executive officer Ben Flynn held a Q&A session with some of the finalists, who he praised along with all those in attendance in his address to the crowd.
“After the trials and tribulations of the last few years it’s been remarkable to see so many Geelong businesses focus on growth and supporting their employees.”

The Portarlington to Docklands ferry service has been guaranteed by the state government for at least another year. Launched in May 2017 at its pre-Covid peak in 2019 the trial service attracted almost 110,000 users, with a peak of more than 15,000 passengers in January. Although most popular throughout the summer, the service still attracts thousands of passengers during the colder months. The extension of the trial ensures the weekday services to Melbourne will continue.

Portarlington to Docklands Ferry was funded as part of the last state Budget. The 12-month extension to the trial through to June 30, 2023 will enable a better assessment of longer-term options. Works have recently been completed at Portarlington Harbour. Improvements included an all-weather access from the foreshore to the ferry service, a strengthened pier head to enable vehicle access for the aquaculture industry and emergency response, and a new more accessible low landing for improved water access.

By Matt Hewson Australian musical theatre star and cabaret chanteuse Queenie van de Zandt brings her award-winning show BLUE:TheSongsofJoni Mitchellto Geelong Arts Centre next weekend. The show, which van de Zandt describes as “a love letter from one melancholy, artistic mother to another”, delves into Mitchell’s often turbulent life to take the audience on a journey to uncover the deeper meanings of the songwriter’s lyrics and music.
A ‘love letter’ to Joni Mitchell
A huge part of the inspiration for the show was van de Zandt’s experience as a mother and being aware of Mitchell’s own story as a mother.“Joni was forced to give up her daughter when she was three months old, and she said that created a life-long melancholy that never left her and made its way into every single song she created,” van de Zandt said. “I didn’t get pregnant for many years, until I was 47, and I really thought it was something I was going to miss out on. To see that, to feel the impact of that love, and thinking about having to give that up, it’s heartbreaking.
“It’s definitely not a tribute show; Joni’s such an extraordinary artist and I wanted the show itself to emulate her incredible artistry,” van de Zandt said. “I tell stories of her life and it gives the audience a different experience because they end up really understanding the lyrics. The songs become so much more, hearing them that way.”
I think that’s kind of what melds our stories together.”Vande Zandt believes that the rawness of both Joni’s story and her own allows audiences to tap into their own experiences of loss and memory.“Oneof the gift’s Joni’s given to the world is to allow people to feel seen in their own pain,” she said. “One of the things I wanted to do with this show was take people and allow them to have that hour of melancholy, which is different from sadness, it’s almost nice. It’s like remembering an old love, it’s tinged with pain and sadness but it’s also lovely to have. “So I say to people at the beginning, I’m popping you all in a little boat of melancholy for the next hour, and we stay in that space. And it has to be intimate, and I allow myself to be very vulnerable with the audience, which then allows them to experience that within themselves.”

We are working with Barwon Coast and are trialling different dog controls on Ocean Grove Main Beach until the end of 2022. We are seeking your feedback on Year Two of the trial, which has created a section of the Main Beach that is dog-free all year. The dog free area is between 13W Hodgson St beach access stairs and the 15W beach access stairs at the western end of the promenade in front of the Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club. This accounts for approximately 805 metres of beach. Phill said though he always strived to do better, Netherlands had provided a fitting end for his World Championship career. “You always think, what more could I have done, I should have done this or that, but really, I did what I did,” he said. “It’s just been an absolute privilege to represent Australia all those times and carry the flag into the ring, and to have this last together as father and son participating as competitors.”

Father and son part of bronze win
“We had no domestic tournaments for more than two years, even into the lead up,” he said. “Due to restrictions, financial hardship and travel reluctance, the team was a hell of a lot smaller than past Aussie teams, and one of the least experienced; five of the seven participants were attending their first ITF World Championships, Josh and I excluded.”

incorporated into the design,” he said.
“Armstrong Creek is expected to reach a population of between 55,000 and 65,000 and the library will be a really important learning and cultural hub for the community.”
Matt Hewson
Phill Zdybel is proud to have shared his last taekwondo World Championship podium appearance with his son, Josh. The Australian men’s power team collected bronze at the ITF Taekwondo World Championships 2021, held in Netherlands in July 2022 thanks to COVID-19, with both Phill and Josh on the team. Phill, 57, has competed at five World Championships since 2004 and won numerous medals in those years, but the magnitude of this latest achievement only hit home as he sat in Singapore between flights as the team travelled back to Australia.

THE LIVING ROOM 10, Friday, 7.30pm It was only a matter of time before the savvy crew on TheLivingRoom turned their focus to the ubiquitous work-from-home space. If yours is an unattractive, cluttered afterthought, Barry Du Bois and Amanda Keller’s revamp of a young couple’s small space will inspire with its sparkle and functionality. On the other side of the ditch, Miguel Maestre and Dr Chris Brown (both pictured) have a nature-filled, tummy rumbling segment in the stunning Hawke’s Bay mountains of New Zealand’s North Island.

MY KITCHEN RULES Seven, Sunday, 7pm It’s funny how tastes can change. A little more than two years ago, this show disappeared after a lacklustre season that failed to whet viewers’ appetites. Now, with a new set of guests including Brit cooking queen Nigella Lawson, former MasterChefstar Matt Preston (pictured, right, with judge Manu Feildel) and the charismatic Curtis Stone, this season is turning out to be people’s cup of tea. Tonight, the first last-chance challenge has four teams cooking a main and dessert to score a spot in the semi-final.

‘‘ It’s about uplifting the smallest person in the space; I want to find them and make them feel like the biggest person in the room ’’ - Art Simone Art Simone is conquering the world, but Geelong holds a special place in her heart. (Supplied)
Art began performing at the original Piano Bar seven years ago, holding drag night once a month, and she said Geelong has played a huge part in her career. “Geelong’s been so important because it’s taught me how to connect with an audience,” she“Onsaid.a whim we started doing shows monthly on a Sunday night, and almost instantly it blew up, people loved it. Then it was fortnightly, then weekly, then we were doing events two or three nights a week.
A rt Simone has won titles, featured in her own series ‘Highway to Heel!’ and finished runner-up in 2021’s ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under’, all the while looking fabulous.Butthe Geelong-based drag performer is only just getting started. “People sometimes think I’m an overnight sensation, that I just got lucky like a lot of celebrities do, especially reality TV celebrities,” she said. “But I’ve been slogging it hard for the last 12-plus years. I’m very grateful of where I am, but to say, ‘oh, I never thought I’d get here’ would be not applauding myself for all that hard work.
“That’saveryvalidthingforperformers, but I soon realised the joy for me was connecting with others and using the medium of drag to break down boundaries. “Instead of making me feel like the most important person in the room, it’s about uplifting the smallest person in the space; I want to find them and make them feel like the biggest person in the room. “I’ve done a lot of my work here in Geelong, and when we first started we’d have people from all walks of life come see a drag show. They’d discover new things about themselves and it would help them have conversations with other people in their life. Drag is a very special medium.”

It’s very funny.” The future of drag is bright; more and more, mainstream audiences are lapping up the colourful, extravagant experience that is drag performance.“Dragisall over the world now, and it’s so wonderful to see it so celebrated,” Art said. “And now it’s more readily-known that drag’s not just for a gay man to dress up as a woman; anyone can do drag. It’s very powerful.“Andto take it back to regional crowds, I remember walking down the street to gigs and getting stuff yelled out to me from cars. But it’s really changed. “Now people will wind down their window and shout out, ‘Are you from Piano Bar? Can’t wait to see your show there!’”
Art Simone: Queen of the world
“I think if I went back in time and met myself and said, ‘by the way Daye, you’re actually going to be almost famous’, I think instead of being surprised I’d be more like ‘good onya girl, good onya!’” When 16-year-old Jack Daye prepared to go on for his very first drag performance at a Minus18 event in 2009 it was the chance to transform himself – and fear – that was foremost in his mind.
“Like a lot of queer kids, I was trying to find myself and I didn’t really like the skin that I was in,” Art said. “I got into the world of drag through my love of makeup. Using makeup and drag as a form of escapism during high school was really special for me. “Going into that first gig, I was so frightened, so scared, because although when you’re doing drag you’ve got a lot of armour on, you’re also very vulnerable.
Geelong-based drag performer Art Simone has built a career on being fabulously outrageous as she explains to Matt Hewson.
“Not only that, I was wearing my sister’s deb dress that I’d pinched for the show, so not only was I afraid of not being good enough, I was also afraid of damaging her dress and my mum finding out.” But Jack, it turns out, was good enough; the crowd adored the show. And the story of Art Simone began. “As soon as I got on stage the crowd was so wonderful and supportive,” Art said. “It was really motivating. It was almost like I was addicted from that point onward. I thought, oh my goodness, this is where I’m meant to be, I have to do more of this.” Art went on to win her first drag competition in Melbourne a couple of years later, and things “just snowballed”. “I was performing everywhere and I got to do lots of exciting things,” she said. “But it all just started from a love of makeup.” As Art performed more and more to bigger and bigger audiences, drag began to take on a different“Whenmeaning.Ifirst started I was very … self-centred in my performance; it was all about me and what I was feeling,” she said.

Bernie BalliangBourke, Appeal for help I am extremely concerned about the ongoing humanitarian crisis facing more than 40 Australian children and their mothers struggling to survive in tents in the deserts of Syria. Many of the children are stunted, weak and underweight from poor nutrition. Some have serious injuries that require immediate treatment, such as removing shrapnel, surgery that camp medical facilities are ill-equipped to carry out. The humane response needed by our federal government is to bring these suffering children home and not let them die. Their mothers have agreed to be put under strict control orders if allowed to return to Australia, so they pose no threat to our nation’s security. I appeal to the federal government to act with mercy and compassion and provide citizens.immediatesupporttoeachoftheseAustralian

Geelong’s Wathaurong Aboriginal Cooperative will receive $1.6 million in state government funding. The funding will help develop a Healing Spirit Youth Hub, creating a fit-for-purpose, culturally safe space for children and young people to access clinical and therapeutic, social and emotional wellbeing services and supports. The announcement comes as the state government is ensuring Aboriginal organisations have the facilities they need to support their communities and deliver the best services to First People’s Victorians.

Some would say, not before time, Jeep has brought back an extra row of seats to its Grand Cherokee large sports utility vehicle range, turning it into a full seven-seat SUV. While at it, the maker has boosted its iconic off-roader with more technology.
Summary The Grand Cherokee L Summit is sold by Jeep on the pretext of its size and advanced technology. If that floats your boat and you have a lazy $100 grand-plus lying around, this could be the SUV for you.
The flagship Summit Reserve (on test) included Palermo quilted leather, 21-inch wheels, a McIntosh premium sound system, front-seat ventilation and massaging, four-zone climate control and air suspension, while a $5500 Advanced Technology Group, with head-up display, wireless phone charging, night vision camera and front interactive passenger display, was added, taking the price to more than $120 grand, before on-road costs.
A new-generation five-seat model - with the same technology and styling as the seven-seat L - will follow to Australia later this year, with the option of 4xe plug-in hybrid power.
All models are powered by the tried-and-tested 3.6 litre Pentastar naturally aspirated V6 engine, delivering 210 kW of peak power and 344 Nm of maximum torque to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The flagship Summit adds a more advanced four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case. Safety Top-shelf safety features take the Grand Cherokee L Summit to new heights. These include adaptive cruise control with stop/go, full speed collision warning with autonomous braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection. Then there’s blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert and, last but not least, active laneAllmanagement.theseusea selection of loud warning beeps at times hard to pinpoint the source of the potential trouble, while driving assistance, such as active lane management, can be over-intrusive.
The replacement for the big five-seater, the long wheelbase L comes in three versions, beginning with the Grand Cherokee L Night Eagle, selling for $82,250, plus on-roads, then the mid-range L Limited ($87,950) and the L Summit Reserve ($115,450).
Infotainment
Styling For a vehicle so big, at more than five metres long, the Grand Cherokee L Summit is well proportioned – width more than two metres, yet height well under two metres – gives the SUV a bold yet sleek aerodynamic coupe character.Oneonlooker compared the test car looks to a Range Rover, which in this case, was a bit of a stretch, literally. Indeed, at more than 5.2 metres long, the ‘L’ is easy to find in a crowded car park, as it inevitably sticks out from the standard car space. The front consists of an upper metallic grille with Jeep’s trademark seven slots flanked by LED headlamps. Below is a full grille-width air vent incorporating LED daytime running lights. From the rear, the SUV belies its bulk with simple horizontal lines incorporating wraparound tail lights and twin alloy tipped supportalloyexhaustpipes.Sideon,21-inchpolishedpaintedwheels,astandardfitmentonSummit,asportystreetpresence.
board, all through the Uconnect system. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster looks after sat nav, along with mechanical features such as tyre pressure monitoring and driving aids. There’s a roof-mounted rear facing ‘kid cam’ camera that will police questionable behaviour in the back two rows. It even has a zoom mode. Engines / transmissions
The Grand Cherokee has become grander, with increased dimensions, seven seats and boosted technology. (Supplied)
Interior The increase in the horizontal exterior allows for a boost to the wheelbase and cabin space in general, something not lost on occupants aboard the test vehicle. In a first for Jeep, the Grand Cherokee L boasts Uberesque seating for a driver and six passengers in space and comfort. All three rows are easily accessed, even the power-operated third row, with the second row tumbling well out of the way, leaving the back to weigh in with adult leg room. Carry-on bits and pieces find a home in a range of storage spaces, including a deep box in the centre console and bottle holders in the centre and doors all round. Rear passengers have the advantage of retractable blinds, just in time for summer heatwave predictions. Luggage is not left behind in the storage stakes, with 487 litres available with all three rows in use, leading up to a cavernous 2395 litres with the two sets of rear seatbacks folded flat. There’s a cabin-wide cubby under the floor where the jack is stored.

It was semi-final week for Tennis Geelong Junior Saturday competition for the majority of sections, and almost half of the first-semi results were tied on sets and decided on games. It was a similar situation at Moolap, where the home teams Mick Kotwic battled it out with Hamlyn Park’s Jeffrey Mann, with Kotwic helping his team to the win taking two of the three sets 7-6, 7-6, 5-7. Kyle Beattie chipped in winning his three sets for the day, putting Moolap straight into the Section 3 Men’s grand final. Section 4 Men were in their last round for the year, and while first and second were settled, the battle for third and fourth were up for grabs. In the end, Highton Blue and Leopold closed the gap on Highton Gold, but Gold remained ahead on percentage to their stablemates and a point ahead of Leopold. Waurn Ponds took it to minor premiers Grovedale in Section 1 Mixed, with nothing separating the teams after the first two mixed, and only one game after the doubles, with Mikaela Mullen winning both of her sets for the Ponds. Grovedale rallied in the final two mixed however, with Marci Sanderson and Dave Meehan getting up 6-2, and Belinda Lee and Jason Schoenmaekers denying Mikaela her third set taking it 6-3, earning them the

Nicole Wright and Darryl Mohr sealed the win for Blue in the fifth set, leaving White to face Grovedale next week. Waurn Ponds are hitting their straps at the right time, pushing themselves into second last week, and taking a good win on Saturday over minor premiers Grovedale. The match was even two sets all after the doubles, but the Ponds saved the best to last taking both reverse mixed, to put them straight into the Section 3 Mixed grand final. Section 4 and 5 Mixed played their final home and away matches this week, and with all matches in Section 4 level on sets, and the ladder leaders in Section 5 having good wins, the only change to finals positions was Section 5’s Wandana Heights winning a home final by half a point to Ocean Grove.
